one 100 word email written with ai costs roughly one bottle of water to produce. the discussion of whether or not using ai for work is lazy becomes a non issue when you understand there is no ethical way to use it regardless of your intentions or your personal capabilities for the task at hand
with all due respect, this isnt true. *training* generative ai takes a ton of power, but actually using it takes about as much energy as a google search (with image generation being slightly more expensive). we can talk about resource costs when averaged over the amount of work that any model does, but its unhelpful to put a smokescreen over that fact. when you approach it like an issue of scale (i.e. "training ai is bad for the environment, we should think better about where we deploy it/boycott it/otherwise organize abt this) it has power as a movement. but otherwise it becomes a personal choice, moralizing "you personally are harming the environment by using chatgpt" which is not really effective messaging. and that in turn drives the sort of "you are stupid/evil for using ai" rhetoric that i hate. my point is not whether or not using ai is immoral (i mean, i dont think it is, but beyond that). its that the most common arguments against it from ostensible progressives end up just being reactionary
Tumblr media
i like this quote a little more- its perfectly fine to have reservations about the current state of gen ai, but its not just going to go away.

FUCK GENERATIVE AI
Full article here
It's disgusting that we see more and more companies using AI to avoid paying creatives just to fill their own pockets. What hurts the most are companies like Wacom and Michaels and others, that are all about uplifting artists and creativity, using obvious AI.
Then you have these fake ass ppl using these generative AI programs calling themselves "artists" and scamming people. If anyone is on artist TikTok you might have come across a vid of a writer who commissioned an "artist" to illustrate a book cover. Poor woman found out the illustration was in fact AI after being urged by the comments to request the files and even the scammer themselves said they used AI. Something the scammer didn't disclose in their description. The writer spent over $1000 for this cover thinking she was commissioning a genuine artists.
The good thing is that artists are fighting back (and winning) and AI isn't copyrightable or protected.

I don’t have a posted DNI for a few reasons but in this case I’ll be crystal clear:
I do not want people who use AI in their whump writing (generating scenarios, generating story text, etc.) to follow me or interact with my posts. I also do not consent to any of my writing, posts, or reblogs being used as inputs or data for AI.

Giant hug for everyone who has been onto the game's Steam discussion board and replied with classy snark to people grumbling on there.
I'm reluctant to do that as a developer but when I see you guys doing it, just know that I'm cheering for you.

"the reason adrien is just instantly good at everything he tries is because he is programmed to be that way as a senti" aside from the fact that i don't think that's how it works (and also while he was decent at everything he tried with marinette he wasn't instantly good at all of them, and what marinette actually said to him was that he could improve in anything with practice but it was a great first attempt) did we all collectively forget about how adrien actually canonically isn't the best singer?
Tumblr media
#adrien agreste#miraculous#miraculous ladybug#ml s6 spoilers#ml season 6#ml climatiqueen#miraculous spoilers#ml spoilers#actually never saw that episode in french so maybe the french voice actor did a better job idk but given that adrien doesn't#usually sing for kitty section or ever the way i saw it was he used his poetry writing skills to write a song#and as a songwriter he was probably great but being a good lyricist doesn't make you a great singer obviously#so to me that's what his deal is#i actually like that throughout this show adrien has some things he picks up easily and some things he has to work on and might never do as#well as people with more experience#i also think as a kids show the lesson they want to put out is anyone can improve with effort and attempt#like he fumbled that science lab experiment but enjoys particle physics#languages tend to come easily to him precisely because it's been something he was forced to do since he was young#a lot of polygots especially if they start young develop skills and see linguistic patterns and iirc he already knew some#japanese from anime and his familiarity with mandarin should help#but i love that he took it further and took on morse code like the cute nerd he is#and now he's studying ancient greek for fun??? what a cute#marinette says his macarons tasted fine but we saw him struggle with the creme#what i mean to say is#he has discipline (basically second nature now) and dedication so he can do well but it DOES require effort#and i think it dismisses how much adrien TRIES or the fact that a lot of skills he was taught to have since a young age aid him#and i just don't think all sentis are “perfect” in an AI robotic way (even if that's how their parents wished they were)#it also just lessens his humanity and iirc the writers have stated multiple times that they are still human#(we can discuss how inconsistent ml is about sentis in general but eh idc for that conversation tbh agdhsjsjks)#anyway adrien will forever be#my nerdy son i love him so much

I know you're on paternity leave so feel free to ignore this if you don't want to think about it, but has there been any progress on open-sourcing Tumblr's front-end? Inquiring minds would like to know
i hadn’t seen any progress on it before i left. there’s a strong willingness to do it, it’s just a big task to get it open-source-able in a sustainable way. a lot of our CI/CD processes rely on stuff that would need to be rebuilt from scratch, i think. totally doable, just not a priority.
but maybe there’s been progress since i left, i dunno! 🤞

AI-Generated Unique Character Flaws
Here are Twenty AI-generated unique Character Flaws that can be used to create well-rounded, relatable characters with room for growth and development throughout your story. These flaws can add depth and realism to any fictional character.
Chronic Overthinker: Constantly second-guessing themselves and unable to make decisions without extensive analysis, leading to missed opportunities and frustration.
Pathological Altruism: So eager to help others that they neglect their own needs, often making situations worse because they can't say no.
Memory Obsession: Fixated on a past event, they often bring it up in unrelated contexts, making it difficult for them to move on or form new relationships.
Superstitious Behavior: Their reliance on superstitions dictates their actions, causing them to make irrational decisions that can lead to conflict or failure.
Emotional Mask: Always puts on a happy face regardless of their true feelings, leading to bottled-up emotions and eventual breakdowns or misunderstandings.
Compulsive Truth-Teller: Unable to tell white lies, they often hurt others' feelings or create awkward situations by always telling the unvarnished truth.
Phobia-Induced Limitation: A severe, irrational fear (e.g., of water, heights, or open spaces) that restricts their activities and interactions, creating obstacles in their personal and professional life.
Indecisive Perfectionist: Obsessed with making everything perfect, they struggle to complete tasks or make choices, often leading to missed deadlines and opportunities.
Self-Sabotaging: Subconsciously undermines their own efforts due to a deep-seated belief that they don't deserve success or happiness.
Attention-Seeker: Desperate for validation and attention, they often engage in risky or inappropriate behaviors to be noticed, leading to strained relationships and trouble.
Unyielding Stubbornness: Refuses to adapt or consider other viewpoints, leading to conflicts and missed opportunities for growth or collaboration.
Social Chameleon: Changes their personality to fit in with different groups, leading to an identity crisis and shallow relationships because they are never truly themselves.
Eternal Optimist: So optimistic that they fail to see or prepare for potential problems, leading to repeated failures and disappointments.
Compulsive Hoarder: Unable to let go of possessions, their living space becomes cluttered and unmanageable, affecting their quality of life and relationships.
Hyper-Critical: Overly critical of themselves and others, leading to strained relationships and a constant feeling of dissatisfaction.
Isolationist: Prefers solitude to the extent that they avoid meaningful relationships and miss out on social opportunities, leading to loneliness and social awkwardness.
Impulsive Generosity: Gives away money or possessions recklessly, often leaving themselves in financial difficulty and unable to sustain their own needs.
Nostalgia Dependent: Lives in the past, constantly reminiscing and comparing current situations unfavorably to their memories, hindering their ability to enjoy the present.
Reluctant Leader: Possesses leadership qualities but is afraid of taking charge, leading to frustration from peers who see their potential but also their refusal to step up.
Conflict Avoider: Goes to great lengths to avoid conflict, often at their own expense, leading to unresolved issues and a lack of assertiveness.

Clarification: Generative AI does not equal all AI
💭 "Artificial Intelligence"
AI is machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and more that I'm not smart enough to know. It can be extremely useful in many different fields and technologies. One of my information & emergency management courses described the usage of AI as being a "human centaur". Part human part machine; meaning AI can assist in all the things we already do and supplement our work by doing what we can't.
💭 Examples of AI Benefits
AI can help advance things in all sorts of fields, here are some examples:
Emergency Healthcare & Disaster Risk X
Disaster Response X
Crisis Resilience Management X
Medical Imaging Technology X
Commercial Flying X
Air Traffic Control X
Railroad Transportation X
Ship Transportation X
Geology X
Water Conservation X
Can AI technology be used maliciously? Yeh. Thats a matter of developing ethics and working to teach people how to see red flags just like people see red flags in already existing technology.
AI isn't evil. Its not the insane sentient shit that wants to kill us in movies. And it is not synonymous with generative AI.
💭 Generative AI
Generative AI does use these technologies, but it uses them unethically. Its scraps data from all art, all writing, all videos, all games, all audio anything it's developers give it access to WITHOUT PERMISSION, which is basically free reign over the internet. Sometimes with certain restrictions, often generative AI engineers—who CAN choose to exclude things—may exclude extremist sites or explicit materials usually using black lists.
AI can create images of real individuals without permission, including revenge porn. Create music using someones voice without their permission and then sell that music. It can spread disinformation faster than it can be fact checked, and create false evidence that our court systems are not ready to handle.
AI bros eat it up without question: "it makes art more accessible" , "it'll make entertainment production cheaper" , "its the future, evolve!!!"
💭 AI is not similar to human thinking
When faced with the argument "a human didn't make it" the come back is "AI learns based on already existing information, which is exactly what humans do when producing art! We ALSO learn from others and see thousands of other artworks"
Lets make something clear: generative AI isn't making anything original. It is true that human beings process all the information we come across. We observe that information, learn from it, process it then ADD our own understanding of the world, our unique lived experiences. Through that information collection, understanding, and our own personalities we then create new original things.
💭 Generative AI doesn't create things: it mimics things
Take an analogy:
Consider an infant unable to talk but old enough to engage with their caregivers, some point in between 6-8 months old.
Mom: a bird flaps its wings to fly!!! *makes a flapping motion with arm and hands*
Infant: *giggles and makes a flapping motion with arms and hands*
The infant does not understand what a bird is, what wings are, or the concept of flight. But she still fully mimicked the flapping of the hands and arms because her mother did it first to show her. She doesn't cognitively understand what on earth any of it means, but she was still able to do it.
In the same way, generative AI is the infant that copies what humans have done— mimicry. Without understanding anything about the works it has stolen.
Its not original, it doesn't have a world view, it doesn't understand emotions that go into the different work it is stealing, it's creations have no meaning, it doesn't have any motivation to create things it only does so because it was told to.
Why read a book someone isn't even bothered to write?

You know what’s many times worse than generative AI existing? Accusing real scientists and artists’ work of being AI generated.
If I find out my work is being fed into a generative AI training set, I squirm and resolve to fight the government.
If I get accused of my work being AI generated, I literally stop doing art or research for a week because well I guess I don’t exist for a reason if what I thought was good is basically on the level of AI now. Just replace me already.
FUCK OFF! Don’t publicly call out any specific person or work (yes even if it’s a repost) unless you have proof. It is not worth ruining a scientist or artist’s career.
