Writing Notes: Prints & Patterns
Tumblr media
Popular Prints and Patterns. Adding a bold pattern or print into your look is the easiest way to show that you've put real thought into your outfit. A pattern is any repeated design, whereas a print is a design that has been printed onto fabric, rather than woven or embroidered. The words are often used interchangeably to talk about any non-solid-color clothing. Some of the most popular patterns and prints include:
Gingham is a fabric made from dyed cotton yarn woven into a checkered pattern, usually white and one other color.
Stripes come in all different styles, from pinstripes (very narrow vertical stripes that often appear on dark-colored suits) to the classic French marinière T-shirt with its distinctive blue and white horizontal stripes.
Animal prints mimic the stripes, spots, and scales of wild animals. Snake, zebra, and leopard prints make a bold statement, but there are ways to incorporate them subtly.
Plaid, also known as tartan, is a woven fabric traditionally made from wool that is now a common pattern for flannel shirts. Multicolor plaid features repeating vertical and horizontal stripes of varying thicknesses.
Floral patterns feature flowers of all kinds. Floral prints can be tiny (aka ditsy) or large and detailed. They can be multicolor or monochrome. They are fun patterns to work with since they offer so much variety.
Polka-dots are a pattern of repeating circles of the same size. They can be big or small; smaller dots tend to look more neutral, while larger dots make more of a statement.
Geometric prints feature shapes such as triangles, squares, and trapezoids. They can be intricate and repetitive, or more abstract. Houndstooth is an example of a repeating geometric pattern in two colors.
Paisley is a Persian pattern featuring a teardrop design with a curved point. The interior of the teardrop often contains intricate geometric or floral-inspired designs. You’re likely to find paisleys printed on silk items like ties and scarves.
Herringbone is a fabric (usually twill) featuring a V-shape weave with a repeating pattern that has the appearance of a fish skeleton.
How to Wear Prints & Patterns
Learning how to incorporate just one pattern at a time will give you a great foundation for mixing patterns later on.
Wear a pattern under something more neutral. The easiest way to incorporate a print into your current wardrobe is to find a print that you can put under something—for example, a printed shirt underneath a suit or blazer. The jacket will cover most of the print, revealing just a hint of it. If you’re feeling bold, you can remove the jacket to show off the print.
Start with a subtle piece of clothing. If a patterned shirt or dress feels like too much, start with socks, a handbag, or a scarf. Patterned accessories can add a point of interest to your look without feeling over the top.
Trust yourself. Prints are personal: Just because you love a print doesn't mean everyone else is going love it, and that’s okay. Most neutrals are universally appealing. That's not the case with prints. So don't be disheartened if not everyone loves your print, and wear what makes you feel good.
Tips for Mixing Prints & Patterns
Conventional wisdom says you can't mix patterns, and yet some of the most stylish dressers mix patterns regularly. Mixing patterns is a way to show confidence and add an element of fun to your look. Here’s how to mix prints and patterns successfully.
Get to know your foundation prints. Start with classic, simple prints: stripes, polka-dots, and florals. Then, layer on a bolder print. For example, try a classic striped T-shirt with a more exciting geometric pattern layered on top. The lines in both patterns will compliment each other, and the simple stripe will act as a neutral.
Embrace the power clash. You don't always have to match patterns. Mixing bold patterns like leopard print and plaid may seem like a fashion faux pas, but there’s a lot of power in selecting two prints that don’t share any commonalities. Anchor the look with a neutral item, like a black blazer or denim jacket.
Choose patterns of different sizes. One of the simplest ways to mix patterns is to layer patterns with two different scales. Pairing a small-scale print with a large-scale pattern allows the smaller scale to work as a neutral. In this way, a skirt with a tiny floral print can work with a large-format plaid flannel for a grunge look.
Use color. When working with mixed prints, pay close attention to colors. Bold patterns in neutral colors, like black and white, can offset wildly different patterns in a more vibrant color scheme. One strategy is to mix a monochrome pattern, like a red-and-white polka-dot, with a multicolor pattern that features the color from the monochrome, like a red floral print.

and here's some fun we had experimenting with herringbone twill using recycled sari silk as the weft, and stripes in the warp

and here's the only pics we have of a log cabin weave scarf we were really proud of (yes, our selvages were always terrible)
alas we don't have any other pics of stuff that we wove, which is very frustrating - there was in particular a tapestry that we wove on a floor loom during a week of being taught, ah well

Hey so I know this isn’t the most original idea but could you do a mutual pining Legolas x reader where reader braids his hair without knowing the significance?
For some reason I haven’t been able to find any of em recently but it is my absolute favourite thing to read 😔😔
Softest Touch ~ Legolas x Reader
A/N: that's also my favorite prompt ngl :) Anything that has to do with brading makes my heart melt haha. Btw thank you so so much for requesting <33 I appreciate it a lot :) I really hope you like the story!!
⇢ ˗ˏˋ Warnings: fluff ࿐ྂ ⇢ ˗ˏˋ Words: 933 ࿐ྂ ⇢ ˗ˏˋ Request: Yes (thank you <33) ࿐ྂ ⇢ ˗ˏˋ Meleth Nin ~ My Love ࿐ྂ
Summary: After looking at the etheral elven prince, you have the urge to weave your fingers through his silken hair, leading to more than just simple hair braiding.
Tumblr media
Sitting on a log in front of the fire, you thank Sam for the soup he just handed you. Taking a spoon full of one of the rare warm dinners you get on your journey, you look at all of the other companions gathered around. Boromir playing around with Pippin and Merry while Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas sat on the log opposite of yours. Your eyes stop at the elven prince for a little too long, fascinated by his beauty. The light of the fire giving him a golden glow making him look even further ethereal than he already was. You noticed your growing fondness for Legolas weren’t just friendly feelings towards a companion as he once helped you out with your aim. Since then, it became almost a routine. After dinner, the both of you always decided to go a little further away from the company to practice your aim with the arrows (that you also carve together) and sometimes share a few stories of your past.
Finishing up your soup, you decide to join the other three on the log for a quick chat. Legolas notices you first and gives you a soft smile, before scooting over to make some room for you. Sitting down beside him you notice your close proximity and feel the familiar warmth spread to your cheeks. Looking at his side profile you see his beautiful white hair, which almost seems to glow due to the light source in front of you. The way his hair falls over his back makes it look like the softest of silk and you wish to run your fingers through it. “Legolas, I have been wondering if I could maybe braid your hair?” Gimli spits out his soup while Aragorn lets out a cough. Confused at their reaction about your request you look at them bewildered. Legolas cheeks were dusted in a soft pink as he clears his throat. “That sounds lovely.” Gimli abruptly stands up and staggers away, followed by Aragorn, who politely excuses himself.
Grinning at him, you stand up from your seat at the log and take your place behind him. Weaving your hands once through his hair you realize how soft it really is. You open the braid by his ear carefully, not to hurt him before deciding on a small herringbone braid. Parting his hair into two sections, you softly start to intertwine the strands together, sometimes accidentally brushing your fingers against his pointy ear. At the soft touch he accidentally lets out a gasp. “Are you alright?” You ask him, worried that you might have hurt him. “Yes, don’t worry.” Finishing up the braid, you move back in front of him and take a look at his face. A smile graces his lips before he thanks you.
The days have passed and you notice that Gimli, as well as Aragorn, seem to have started to call you ‘Your Highness’ as well as ‘Your Majesty’. You didn’t think much about it, until one night, during your watch. You looked up at the moon, while being perched onto one of the logs in front of the fire that has been put out since a few hours. The sound of footsteps nearing you made you look up at the source. “The moon is beautiful, isn’t it?” Legolas says, before taking a seat beside you. Smiling at him you nod softly. Looking at his side profile, you notice the braid you had done a few days ago, still in tact and untouched. “Do you want me to rebraid your hair for you?” He hums softly at your question, signalling you to redo it once more. Opening the braid, you start weaving through the strands again. “I have a question I would like to ask you.” You mutter from beside him, completely focusing on his hair. “Do you know why Gimli and Aragorn suddenly call me by royal endearments?”
The elven prince chuckles softly before turning towards you after the braid is finished. “Well let me braid your hair and I can explain their behaviour.” Turning around you let Legolas comb his fingers through your hair, before he decides to start braiding on a small section. “You know, in my culture braiding is a very important and intimate gesture.” He starts, making you blush at his words. “Normally we only braid or let our hair be braided by someone we would like to court.” You gasp softly at the realization that dawns upon you. “I- I’m sorry I didn’t know.” You rasp out, turning around after Legolas is done with his braid. “Does that mean you don’t wish to court me?” He asks, tilting his head slightly. A bright blush creeps up your cheeks before you shake your head. “No I- I mean yes I do.” You look down at your hands, beginning to play with your fingers.
“I do have feelings for you Legolas. If I would have known that braiding indicates my feelings, I would have just done a better job at braiding your hair.” His laugh makes you look up at him, before he puts his hand on your cheek. “You now have enough chances to braid my hair Meleth Nin.” His thumb softly brushes against your cheek before he leans in. Meeting him halfway, your lips brush against each other in a soft kiss. Wrapping your hands around his neck you lean even closer towards him. The warmth of his body encasing you, making you feel like this is just a dream. Breaking apart you both smile softly at each other, basking in the moonlight above.

just took my lil baby herringbone scarf off the loom, its a little guy just like 7x25ish inches. Hanging to dry after wet finishing rn, i think next i want to make some little bags/pouches as a sort of proof of concept, i think it would be nice to make some cotton totes for people as gifts. Just want to kind of mess around with epi and beat strength and gauge how long it will take to weave before i warp up a proper one.

Had the desire to weave since the rug shop Saturday so I pulled out my little jury-rigged loom again
Grocery box, dowel rods, and knockoff swift darning loom. Warp is candle wick thread and weft is cotton scraps from Amana Weaving Mill
I tend to be a glutton for tedious and difficult, so I've sampled plain, basket weave, twill, diamond twill, herringbone twill, and more diamond twill
Tumblr media
Flipped the loom around so I didn't strain my back and neck leaning forward
Tumblr media
Only took me 2.5 hours to do the last section but OMG DIAMOND TWILL! On MY tiny loom!

Accustomed To You (Revali x Reader)
Based on this idea by @dorayakimanjiro where Revali uses the string of his Great Eagle bow to make you an engagement ring. Thanks for such a delightful and beautiful idea!  Reader is gender neutral. ☺ The customs of the Rito were unorthodox in some ways due to their flighted anatomy and avian instincts - and in some ways they were shared amongst other every race present in Hyrule. Love, and being in love, was no strange concept to Revali. Though most were sure the too proud Rito would ever find companionship that suited his tastes, you proved them all wrong. In your eyes was a kindness he’d never experienced from anyone, a depth of selflessness and joy that was infectious. It made him soft - the unbreakable Revali becoming pliant from your genteel gestures and willing companionship. Even surprising him when you took up his bow on your own accord to nail a Bokoblin that had intended to get the jump on him (a mistake on his part, as he was so peacefully distracted by your humming while you both were enjoying the spring breeze).  It was then that Revali knew he could not simply see you as just a friend or a traveling partner. No, you’d earned his respect entirely - and even moreso, his heart.  So here he was, engaging in a tradition that all peoples of Hyrule were familiar with: intention of courtship. It took him a few weeks to be able to whittle the circular thing to the size of your ring finger. It was made from the finest wood Rito Village had to offer - where he would carve the tiniest intricate holes and patterns that represented him. He polished and shined it to the point of gleaming in the light of the sun; it was almost perfect. Almost.  With careful precision, Revali unfurled the string of his Great Eagle bow - worn with heroic use - a string you’d more times than you could count; a string that that was basically an extension of himself and all that encompassed. He threaded the bow string through the small holes of your ring, weaving it through in a herringbone pattern until it was complete and knotted at the end. A proud feat for the Rito, whose labor could be classified as nothing less than eternal devotion. Each moment spent sculpting, polishing, and weaving until it was the perfect piece was spent with you at the forefront of his mind. Your laughter, your warmth, your love...all things Revali decided long ago he wanted at his side for eternity. His tailfeathers chuffed at the brilliance of your ring.  Now it was perfect.  --- “Revali, it’s marvelous!” you say with a waver in your voice, your bright eyes brimming with tears as you scanned the woven ring. His chuckle was light, “I made it...for you.”  In his feathered fingers he took your hand, slipping the ring onto your finger. His voice softened, emerald hues holding your gaze with all the love he could muster, “For as long as I’ve known you, you have always felt familiar to me...One day I realized, being with you feels like the sun on my wings when I fly,” he looks down at your hand, heart full at how right it feels to see his ring on your finger, “And just like that warmth, I will always cherish you. Marry me, chickadee...” His nickname for you. A passing tease from many many months ago now turned an affectionate endearment, nurtured by the love you two both shared. Without thought, you threw your arms around him, joyful tears falling freely now. Your heart threatened to spill over from how overfilled with adoration it was. A quick pullback from his returned embrace allowed you connect your eyes once more,  “Yes! Oh Revali, I would love nothing more!” and your pressed a loving kiss to his beak. He held you closer now, his tailfeathers puffing up from happiness.  Eternity with you made his skies feel so much warmer.

Jumping around from step to step on the Laios cosplay, today I put some time into his gambeson! A gambeson is a padded doublet that goes underneath armor and protects the wearer, or can serve as light protection on its own.
Laios wears this gambeson in some manga panels (I don't actually know the context, I'm functionally anime-only) and it appears to be the same length as his chainmail shirt, so I'm going to make it to go under his mail. The most intriguing part from a costuming perspective is that diagonal texture!
Tumblr media
There are a couple of ways I can achieve this. The easiest would be to use something like a herringbone twill, that has a diagonal-looking weave in the fabric when it's cut on the straight grain. But that won't read well from a small distance; it'll look solid-colored once you're a few feet away.
Which brings me to poking at my fabric stash, where I've kept a big ol piece of cotton corduroy. Corduroy has a distinct texture that reads very well at a distance, and this one in particular has some variegated stripes that help that texture stand out even more. Rather than make a simple-shaped garment out of straight-cut fabric, I'm going to get biased.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I divided up my simple shapes into panels and cut each panel on the bias, planning them carefully so that the final garment is symmetrical. When it's assembled, it should have that striking texture variation!
Tumblr media
The next step will be to cut out an interlining layer on the straight grain, and fuse each of these biased pieces to that piece, which will hopefully give me the right drape. Rather than add more lining on top of that, I'll make a bias tape from some darker corduroy and use that to finish the hems.
