in pt one kakashi tells sasuke not to go seeking revenge on his brother. sasuke goes "wtf do you know" and also offers to kill everyone kakashi cares about so kakashi can understand what he's going through. kakashi goes "well sure but everyone i care about died already", which even then we knew wasn't true bc of gai and the dogs and also he seems to get alone with asuma and kurenai ok, but shippuden made it worse by introducing yamato, who has a deep personal tie to kakashi and calls him senpai

then in shippuden shikamaru threatens to desert if tsunade doesn't let him go avenge asuma (which in hindsight is pointless bc none of the three of them separate or together are capable of taking on tsunade anyway so she could've just. let them desert and then arrested them herself. she was literally right there) and tsunade says "i'm not sending three chuunin to take on two of the biggest threats to the village right now when all we really know about them is that they apparently can't die", at which point kakashi pops up completely unprompted and goes "ok what if i babysit tho" and tsunade i guess decides she'd rather be getting drunk than dealing with this so she allows it

meanwhile once sasuke learns where he should actually be aiming his vengeful wrath, kakashi basically goes "ok clearly this means i should kill you"

to sum up:

asuma - died in battle, asked shikamaru to keep an eye on his gf and unborn child (chouji and ino were there also), was buried and mourned as a hero of the village. shikamaru ultimate blasts hidan's body to pieces and leaves him to wait until his sacrifice-powered immortality runs out and he dies of starvation. this is possibly the most unpleasant death in the series and definitely the most drawn-out. we actually never learn how long this will take, so he might still be stuck in that hole waiting to die

the entire uchiha clan - slaughtered in middle of the night (probably closer to evening tbh) by the guy who was supposed to be their next leader, their deaths were used to torture the only person spared multiple times for the explicit purpose of egging him on to vengeance to fulfill their murderer's suicide-by-baby-bro wish, were effectively completely forgotten by anyone aside from said survivor to the point where his own teammates didn't know anything about the slaughter, and also btw it was ordered by the village higher-ups bc the clan was sick of being discriminated against in the village they helped found and were going to do a coup about it. sasuke eventually discovers this after fighting his brother until he literally dies (btw he was sick and overexerted himself on purpose to give sasuke the. cathartic release of thinking he'd murdered his own brother), at which point he swaps tracks, hunts down the mastermind, and asks to know if what he was told was true. he gets a "wow i can't believe your brother told you that. what a traitor" and decides he's fine with killing this guy, which is not helped when the guy reveals that he's stolen eleven magic eyeballs from sasuke's murdered clan, at least one of which belonged to someone sasuke knew personally. sasuke has a mental breakdown bc he's going through a lot right now and says fuck this stupid baka village, and kakashi who has also just found out about the whole state-sponsored genocide thing decides to try and kill him (this is after sakura also tried to kill him - unclear if sasuke was aware of that at any point but like i said he was having a really bad day - but she did it bc no one bothered to tell her the truth so as far as she knows sasuke is just crazy now. kakashi brilliantly then sends her away from the fight so she can continue not knowing what's happening even though her not knowing what's happening just nearly got her chidori'd in the back. but g-d forbid women be involved in the story they're main characters of ig)

so yeah sasuke's a bit miffed

Something is missing. Wait that's a ring?

"What were you thinking? No wait, you probably weren't thinking at all." Jazz hissed as she tied a bandage around Dan's arm who grumbled and looked out the side. They were currently the only ones in the hidden room of Sam's Mansion. "What were you even doing? You still haven't explained anything. Not where you went, nor what you did."

Dan only grumbled again, head still turned away. But from the corner of his eyes, he was watching Jazz. Though he refused to give an answer. His encounter with Talia of all people wasn't something he was going to tell her about. Nor that he overestimated himself. Well, he still thought he could take her and that that woman probably used some dirty tricks when he fought her.

He watched Jazz warp the obviously non-lethal cuts on his human body. They weren't lethal. Talia didn't aim to kill once when he tried to get answers out of him. Yet she was able to keep up with him, his ghost form specifically. Even knew how to counter him.

Dan knew this now and he was not going to get Jazz or any of the others involved with her. Danny wouldn't want that either. Though Dan was not doing that for Danny, at least that's what he told himself. Because Talia was dangerous.

He doesn't know how but she had Fenton technology and that damned taser Vlad created that could suppress ghost powers for some time and force Danny, Ellie and him into human form. Though Dan was aware that Vlad had locked all his inventions away, even destroyed some of them under the watchful eyes of him and Danny before, part of that man's redemption apparently, he also knew that this was the League of Assassins. He wasn't delusional, and it was likely since Talia knew about his existence she likely also already had procured any inventions that could counter ghost powers.

Which didn't lessen his suspicion of that woman at all. No, it made her even more suspicious in his mind. She must have something to do with Danny's disappearances. Especially when she said something about Danyal being where he belongs. Considering the bits and pieces he still remembered from his shared memory with Danny could mean anything.

"Dan! Dan! You aren't listening aren't you?!" Jazz groaned and Dan realized he had zoned out while he had been thinking. "URG! You and Danny are so alike!"

A dark chuckle escaped Dan but at the look, Jazz gave him, he bit back his snarky comment. Though a moment later it wouldn't have mattered anyway a portal opened right before them startling Jazz and causing him to course.

Though neither expected Wolf to be the one to step out of it. The wolf ghost looked around until his eyes fell on Dan and the ghost started to spew out sentences in quick succession that didn't make sense to either. Dan blinked before he finally elbowed Jazz. It sounded like something happened in the Ghost Zone. Something that wasn't good and for a split second Dan hoped that Fright Knight would be fine stopping anyone going through the gate at Vald's. "Call Tucker."

Meanwhile in a penthouse in Gotham…

"Was that supposed to happen?" Tim wondered out loud, questioning once more how he had let Steph talk him into this. Seriously, how? The two were currently staring at a chalk circle drawn on the floor of his bird nest. Stephanie right next to him. The book on ghosts open in her lap on the specific page of how to summon a ghost or more accurately, the ghost king.

Tim hadn't expected anything from this really. Like nothing at all, while he knew about magic, ghosts and all the other supernatural stuff. He did not expect this to work at all. He was still trying to learn how to decipher something akin to ghost language, that apparently Jason can read. Which he was still not over yet, he still planned on pestering the other for more answers. There had to be some better explanation of 'i just can, maybe because i died?' Because if that had been the case then he was pretty sure 90% of their family should have been able to read the damned green note.

Well in the middle of these struggles and logical conclusions Tim was trying to make Steph had gotten her hands on his book and… well she got invested too. Just not like him, in a different way. Like her usual, slightly chaotic way. Which resulted in trying to summon a ghost.

"We did everything right, right?" She muttered, flipping through the pages of the book. "Maybe I should have bought the duck candles after all instead of normal ones…"

Tim shook his head hearing that. "Steph, no." A sigh left his lips before his eyes focused back on the object that now lay in the drawn chalk circle. He was contemplating what to do. Maybe even call Greta until he noticed Steph reaching for it and slapped her hand away from it. "Steph, no."

He gave her a stern look as he repeated himself. His eyes went back a moment later to the toxic green ring with a red eyed skull symbol on it. It reminded him slightly of a lantern ring, just more deadly and likely dangerous. Considering they apparently had summoned it from what was described as the Infinite Realms, in the book.

The blond next to him gave him a pout before getting up and going to Tim's kitchen, coming back with grill tongs and picking the ring up with them before he could stop her again. "What should we do with this?"

The black haired teen sighted getting out one of his special evidence collection bag and opening it for Steph to drop the ring into it. Making sure neither of them would ever touch whatever they had just summoned directly. "I don't know yet. But I think I will make a call to Greta. Probably should have done so earlier. Also I will see if there is a way to analyse… this ring."

Steph hummed, her earlier excitement of doing a ghost summon gone. "That's… kind of boring." Tim could only shrug as an answer, again he hadn't expected anything at all from this. Steph had been the one to hype this summon thing up, expecting to actually summon something from the so called Infinite Realms.

"I want to try again later! Maybe tomorrow You know when everyone is out on patrols! Oh maybe we should try it on the highest building of iGotham, at Fullmoon! Like some real ritual thing!" Steph continued on her enthusiasm returning, Tim shook his head, thought he didn't disagree. A part of him was after all curious and maybe he could get some tips from Greta first before they tried again. The ring, as intriguing as its design was, was kind of disappointing as a summon result.

Another sigh left Tim's lips as they moved to clean up. He did not notice how a green post-it note appeared in the evidence bag by the ring with writing he would not be able to decipher.

The Batter headcanons!!!

I'm dumping EVERYTHING I got on y'alls foreheads so get ready

General:

Batter isn't familiar with being vulnerable, so his first time ever crying infront of someone would probably depend on how heavy his emotions are, & how much he trusts the person (so he'll either let it all out or be hesitant)

His smile tends to look stiff & forced, almost creepy

which brings me to my next: uncanny teeth!! I love the idea that his teeth are unusually straight & a little longer than natural (also stronger) because it'd only make sense considering he eats raw meat! Also it makes a genuine smile look stiff anyways

He likes to hum to himself & I also like the concept that he can beatbox (yes I stole this from the old soft breeze comment section)

probably wouldn't be the best pet owner (Mortis said so himself) & doesn't have much fatherly instincts

this man cannot STAND to see his add-ons hurting or dead - even though he knows he can revive them, he's aware they can feel pain & doesn't want them to be hurting

Romance <3

considering he's probably never told anyone “I love you” before, he'd be one to say it as often as he remembers to & wants to hear it from you as well

in terms of affection, he's shy about asking for kisses & sometimes hugs from behind (that way you can't see how awkward he feels or if he's blushing). He also may like to keep a hand on you when sleeping

his kisses tend to be quick & tight (especially pecks on the cheek)

tentative hand-holding!! he only holds ur hand in large crowds or if he's at risk of losing you, otherwise he links your pinkies or interlaces your fingers together

he doesn’t act that much different when in love, but he does try to smile & laugh more for you (along with affection & all that)

I don't know if he'd have one specific love language, but I think acts of service would be a more common form for him. Think about it - he's a man of little words, so WOA is already knocked out. He's not very touchy despite trying for the sake of romance in general, so no PT. Quality time & receiving gifts just don't stand out too much for me to consider extremely consistent, but they're still there. You've been with him through his mission so it's obvious he likes you by his side, & as for gifts.. he'd greatly appreciate something he didn’t have to fork over credits for.

in terms of dates, he'd either prefer a dinner/cozy night in at home, or going somewhere quiet (night on the beach, a lonely lake)

his ‘type’ isn't very specific, but I'd say either someone whose personality has a big energy (my only ‘comparison’ is Zacharie lmao) or someone just as shy & awkward as he is in this relationship so he doesn’t feel so alone

Okay, gonna throw my two cents in, since we're talking about Deltarune theories and stuff

I don't think Asgore or Carol have anything to do with the knight/any knowledge of what's really in the bunker. I do think they're working together though

It's possible (maybe even probable) Asgore saw/was involved with whatever incident happened that caused Dess to go missing, and was subsequently fired for that. Now, he's trying to make amends by finding Dess, and proving he isn't terrible (hoping that it'd reunite his family in the process)

Carol is going along with him because she Desperately wants to find Dess, and believes Asgore telling her that something is off about the bunker (she's probably known something was wrong for a while, but not exactly what, considering Alphys days the bunker was never really used) It also ties into why she's so controlling of Noelle, and fond of Kris. She already lost one child, and doesn't want to lose her second, and Kris is both Asgore's child (and the Dreemurr's and Holiday's are already known to be friends) plus, Carol may feel terrible, considering the fact that Kris was probably also there when Dess vanished

Whoever Kris is talking with on the phone while they're in the kitchen says that Kris cannot do something in the dark world without their soul. Considering Kris was also talking to Carol on the phone later in Dess's room (since she comes over immediately after learning about Susie with the guitar) I will say almost 100% yes, at the VERY least, Carol is aware of the dark worlds, the Knight, and Kris's soul being a special case. Considering Asgore's got a black shard, I'd say he also knows a lot more about what's going on, even if it's perhaps not to the full extent that Carol and Kris do.

I do think that they're involved in what they're doing in order to try and find/rescue/revive/save Dess, but in this situation I think they're definitely aware of the shelter and the Knight.

Been following your teen parents/pregnant Dami au and the Kryptonian biology from @now-listen-here and I've been thinking it'd be fun if we mashed them together

Like, Jon hearing the baby's heartbeat and smelling the hormone change in Damian and immediately switching into nesting mode

He just picks Damian up and carries him into their team's hc so he can take care of him better. He's modified the room to be as soft and cozy and comfy for Damian as possible.

He devotes all of his time to Damian. He's got service bots doing the chores and he just does whatever Damian wants (usually to be held, occasionally run an insane errand like getting him a treat from another planet. Jon doesn't even bat an eye)

The Kents would rather not this be the case, but they also recognize that there's no curbing his instincts. Forcing him to go to school or on missions would probably end with a fight at best and, at worse, with someone getting a finger bit off.

The Batfam are going CRAZY. They want the baby of the family with them and try to get him back, but it just ends badly for them cause, again, going against an instinct-driven Kryptonian, especially one as temperamental and territorial as Jon is NOT going to end well

The only people who are allowed free access to Damian are Steph, Talia and Lois, because they are helpful. The others need to check first.

Also, I really liked the ask where Damian chose Jon to have a baby with, so I like to think that this is exactly what he planned: he asked Jon because he was his safe space and favorite person in the world (and he's been dreaming of a sweet domestic existence with him for years now), but also because he was well aware he'd be VERY well taken care of. He loves the attention and, while he loves his family, they would just be unnecessary stress

And yes of course Damian loves the attention! And along with his emotional ups and down because of hormones Jon is there by his side the minute he hears even a little sniffle, and if Damian was already clingy enough his 100x more clingy now. Everytime Jon has to leave for something Damian is either pouting or clinging onto the back of Jon's shirt like a child would there mother and how can Jon say no? He says his not going to be doing any hero work for the time being so don't even ask him there are plenty of other supers to ask. Most of the time though Damian really just wants to be held, he has his own worries and anxiety about the whole pregnancy so when his anxiety spikes Jon is there to just hold him and Damian's trying to nuzzles himself as close to Jon as possible.

Talia is more than okay, more than delighted to know that her one and only child, along with her son to be grandchild are protected by one of the strongest beings out there.

And I love the thought that both their families assume that the whole thing was an accident when in reality it's just Damian confessing "It wasn't an accident I wanted this. Though it is happening a lot earlier than we expected"

thinking about the scene in highground where Jake tells Spider to turn himself in and getting angry again.

I find it crazy that Jake, who was seemingly so concerned with getting slowed down[?] by Spider, who was honestly keeping up, and was pretty fairly out of breath cause he can be seen:

A. breaking himself through Hellsgate, getting to his siblings, and breaking the seal of an sealed/airlocked door to free his siblings with essentially his bare hands

B. trecking through the forest, which at one point includes making sure Kiri keeps up, to the point of likely physically up and forward

C. more running and climbing up a massive cliff face, and picking up massive boulders up over his head and throwing them, and kicking others down the cliff side, to hit at The Hellhounds to protect Kiri and Tuk

D. continued running even after that

like yes, he's he was exhausted after that, and fell behind slightly. but he wasn't asking anyone to slow down, he wasn't asking anyone to help him like he had helped Kiri or to be carried like Tuk was (both of these things are fair. but again. perspective). he was exhausted and panting but still running, a bit behind the group, but he was keeping up.

and Jake stops the entire group to get down on his knees in front of this kid and tell him to stay behind. actively putting them in more harms way then Spider lagging behind them ever was.

cause mind you, this is all happening because he was trying to send Spider to the RDA with his foster parents in the first place (which is a whole can of worms of awful. taking that kid from the only home he ever knew. the language, lifestyle, culture, religion, and way of being he's ever known and adapted to as his own. and forcing him to become the very thing he was hated for his entire life; one of Them. he would have had to be an RDA citizen, a well behaved one at that. which means he would probably be punished still his spirit broke or it killed him). his kids went to go rescue their brother and were then captured by his foster father, Nash McCosker. Spider saved them from being sold off to Ardmore, and whatever on Eywa's green earth she planned to do with them, likely to subdue Jake.

but at this point he is asking a 15 year old to do 3 things: stay in the forest by himself where they are shooting at everything that moves, where there could be another potential wave of ground forces or hellhounds or just more heavy fire, until morning. turn himself in, more then likely no longer under the terms of amnesty, so he would have ended up a prisoner. and to do so willingly.

he wasted his time, his family's time, precious time to evade the RDA, to do that. he wasted his time to tell a child "oh sorry, you should just stay here". to ask him to walk to a prison sentence, even if he ever left that forest alive.

I cannot justify that by any means of the care Jake cloaks those words in. especially with his earlier explosion at Spider when he begs to be allowed to stay. to go to High Camp. this independent kid who would have likely needed next to no supervision. who would have demanded no love or attention from him. just he chance to stay and not be forced to be a cog in the RDA machine. he asked to stay and Jake exploded on him. sure, call it stress, but that's unfair. followed by this?

it feels like Jake wants to get rid of this innocent kid by any means possible, with 0 care for not just his quality of life. but his life in general. he did not care if Spider made it out of that forest alive. even if he doesn't conciously realize. Jake is a man who keeps himself and his mind very internal and compartmentalized. so while I don't think he was aware or even actively wish it, but part of him rathered Spider dead then part of his life. (I think this is because Spider is where he has displaced his own self-hatred for his past and humanity, hence the odd and inconsistent relationship he has with him)

and then, because Spider is a literal saint, he does, of course, keep running, and keeps up, and helps protect his siblings. when they get to the airship, he literally pulls Kiri up, almost by himself, before Lo'ak and Neteyam help him, before the family can even realize how far behind she's fallen and catch her in his place.

when the airship hard lands on the water and flood, he stops Kiri from drowning, once again, bodying her weight himself, and then helps patch up their pilot.

all after Jake tried so hard to get rid of him twice in one day. he ends up saving his daughter at least 4 times, not to mention how he saved the life of Lo'ak and Tuk at least once, and helped keep the whole group of them safe while waiting for backup. and he doesn't get so much as a thank you. it makes me angry.

Okay, so I totally see your point in elaborating on the sexism comment. I genuinely am not sure if it was your post I saw initially but this discussion is fascinating so I'm here for it anyway. I also definitely take your point about Jack doing the bare minimum. I think that's what he's been doing his entire life, and yes, that's probably why his parents are disappointed in him. (Carter's battle to become a doctor definitely ironically contributed to his desirability as an heir, and I think I mentioned that in my initial post) It is still an enormous slight against him that his parents (specifically his mother) bypassed him entirely in the inheritance. It's also interesting in that it demonstrates that basically all the Carter family money is in one enormous pile somewhere. I know that there are tax benefits to that, because as I understand it, if it's in a trust the money doesn't actually belong to any one person and therefore the family doesn't have to pay inheritance taxes when it passes from person to person because technically it isn't - all that's changing hands is *control* of the money. (not a tax expert, that's just my understanding of how that works) It does raise the question of what the rest of the family does after Carter pours all the money into the Carter Center. I think there is some mention of individual trust funds, maybe, at some point, but still, Jack was not the only one living off the family money.

I definitely agree that the Carters are somewhat modeled after the Kennedys! I mean, their sons are even named Robert and John, and both Truman and Carter are the names of presidents, even if Jimmy Carter was pretty darn recent at the time of the show and wouldn't have the same historical impact. And by that standard, they definitely wouldn't have made Barbara or any of the other girls the heir, which is why I kind of glossed over her initially (see: Rosemary Kennedy, who also has some bearing on the way they treat Chase, putting him in a very expensive home and then basically ignoring his existence). I didn't consider John's name in the light of the mother's family naming tradition, which I was somewhat aware of, but that at least makes sense!

Of course, John's level of presence has an impact on his involvement in all the decision making and such, but it still raises so many questions about how the Carter family interacts with each other. Like, according to the family tree you provided, Carter has a blood uncle! What's his deal? Why is he completely absent also? There's so much boiling under the surface and I desperately want to know about all of it.

Gamma and Eleanor's relationship is also fascinating to me, because I think that's actually where the sexism of expectations shines the brightest in some ways. Like, yes, they clearly despise each other and I think some of that is because Gamma loves John so much. She clearly knows that Eleanor has hurt John and she's mad about it. But also, it can't be primarily Jack's fault. Eleanor must be the one to blame for the situation. And part of that is that Jack is her son, so even if she's disappointed in him she wants to believe the best of him. But I think there's also this internalized deal where Gamma is thinking that *she* would never have been as weak as Eleanor has been, and that is a failing as both a woman and a mother. I think that's how Gamma would characterize it, anyway. Also Eleanor coming back to the house after Jack left her (and yes, him trying to put all the blame for the divorce on John while phrasing it like he's giving him the *credit* is a deeply weird and uncomfortable interaction) feels like her trying to stake a claim. Like, I'm still in this family, this is still my family house, you can't make me leave, even if I hate every second of being here. But then she does leave anyway, because that's what she's best at.

I have diverged a lot from the point, but I also spend so much time thinking about the Carter family dynamics and pretending I know how rich people work.

Okay, everyone, I went down the The Pitt to ER pipeline rabbit hole and I Need to talk about the Carter Family Dynamics and specifically the elements raised by Chase Carter. I'm gonna be calling Carter John even though it's weird because everyone in this post is a Carter, haha.

Firstly, the situation with Carter's parents is a lot. His mom's multi-episode arc clearly shows that she basically got trapped in the moment that Bobby died, and she seems to resent the fact that John didn't get stuck there too. "You were exactly where you've been my entire life - you were somewhere else" is brutal but apparently factually accurate if his parents couldn't be bothered to come see him for three weeks after he was literally almost murdered by a patient. Like, my parents have way fewer resources to work with and they would be there in absolute minimum amount of travel time were something like that to happen to me. I did see some comment the other day about it being sexist that John is more willing to forgive his dad's screwups than his mom's but, friends, "she was disappointed in you as a father and as a man" is a hell of a thing to say to your father about his recently deceased mother, if you have forgiven that man for his absentee parenting. I think the continued contact with his dad was more a feature of his father making a decision to at least try to change and continuing to show up, while his mother continued to do what she (they) had always done before, which is hiding from the feelings.

But. That thing John says to his dad comes after his grandmother skips right over his dad - and any other relatives who might have a claim - and leaves the entirety of the Carter family fortune (and the ancestral home) in John's control. Which brings me to my main point, which is - the Carter Family Dynamics are real weird, and nothing makes that clearer than the introduction of Chase Carter.

So. The Carter Family is super rich and they have a lot of built-in expectations with that, as rich people often do. For this reason, John has received a great deal of disapproval for his pursuit of a career in medicine, which is bizarre from the perspective of us normal people, for whom a doctor in the family would be something to be proud of. He gets cut off from the family money for a while because he wants to continue to pursue it without them holding anything over his head. His grandmother repeatedly tries to talk him out of it. Chase says he's pretty much the only family member with a career outside of the family holdings, and as such, he's something of the black sheep of the family - or is he?

When Chase shows up, he makes it very clear that John is the Anointed One. He's the one that John Carter Sr. has always wanted to take over when the time comes. And apparently, this is still the case despite his medicine based rebellion. And that's weird for a number of reasons.

Firstly, let's talk about the rest of the Carter family. As previously mentioned, John's dad is very much alive. Logically, he would be the first choice to take over, you'd think. But beyond that, John had an older brother. He has at least one cousin (Douglas) that we know for absolutely certain is older than him, and personally, I interpreted Chase as being older as well, though not by much. He also, maybe, has an older sister who we never met and who may or may not exist. (As far as I can remember from my binge watch, the only mention of her is when he tells Benton that his parents are visiting her for Thanksgiving, prior to Benton inviting him to his family dinner. My personal headcanon is that she doesn't actually exist and he was just covering the fact that his parents couldn't be bothered to be around for the holidays.) In a family dynasty like this, the older boys would seem like the prime candidates, and yet.

Also, this is a good time to talk about how these older boys make John's name kind of weird. Even if you ignore Chase and Douglas as not being in the Main Line, Bobby still exists! Why is the second born son the one that got The Third-ed? I saw something in a fic speculating that the choice was an attempt to curry favor by John's parents, which would make some sense, but also implies the presence of significant dysfunction in the family even before John was born, let alone before Bobby died. I have questions!

SO. It is strange that John would be the Chosen Grandson, purely from a dynastic standpoint. Now, on the other hand, I love John Truman Carter III with my whole heart, and he demonstrates throughout the show that he is a) very smart b) very capable of setting a difficult goal and following through on it even the face of opposition (ironic that this trait that makes him a desirable heir is Also the reason that they're frustrated with him) and c) able to turn on the social graces and charm the general public in the specific way that the family wants. I can see how they would focus on him based on personality but there is still his dad! Who even the younger generation (as spoken through Chase) is ignoring as a stepping stone at best and a non-candidate at worst for inheriting Head of the Family status.

And that's not even getting into the way John seems to have simply supplanted his father in his grandparents' affections. John has a room in the house and feels comfortable adding a home gym without discussing it with his grandmother. John is the one who has a giant portrait of him hanging in the foyer (yes I know from a Doylesian perspective this is for the giggles of Anna and Carol stumbling across it, but like, that painting is canonically there). John's parents stay in a hotel rather than at the house when they're in town for Senior's funeral. John is the one who handles Gamma's home care after her accident, and the one who goes for a drive with her after Senior's funeral, and the one she leaves all the money to. He's the one being recruited to hand out checks at benefits even though he still hasn't given up his day job. There's a lot going on!

Anyway, clearly I have a lot of feelings about this, TLDR: Carter family dynamics are seriously whack.

Wrote over 1,600 words while recovering from a procedure yesterday, somehow. This is the most I have ever written in Faded Daisy in one day ever.

I don't know how much of what I wrote yesterday I will have to change though. I'm feeling iffy about some of it. (The fact that Tievis is trans has finally been confirmed in Faded Daisy, and I'm afraid I didn't do it tastefully enough. But I think I did it as tastefully as possible considering the circumstances. But maybe I should change the circumstances. The fact I have a trans villain already means I have to be very careful in how I write him to avoid upsetting people, and it's very easy to accidentally slip into potential transphobia.)

“what? no?”

at the moment, you’re both at a frat party you didn’t know the other would be at. if you knew sukuna would be here you still would have gone but, judging by the look of complete and utter irritation on his face, he probably wouldn’t say the same. actually, it was pretty funny to walk into the party, make eye contact with him and watch that ‘you’ve got to be fucking with me’ look manifest in his body language. 

what isn’t as funny is the weird guy in your lecture who can’t take a hint and keeps touching you. he’s here now and the shudders running up and down your body tells you very clearly he’s aware of your presence and has plans to do something about it. 

“sukuna, please. i’ll owe you one.”

sitting on a packed sofa, legs spread, he scowls up at you, piercings glinting with the movement. “i don’t need you to owe me one.”

“sukuna, come on. you’re a scary motherfucker, just be touchy with me for a second and intimidate him.”

he takes a swig of his beer. “put your big girl panties on and tell him to fuck off.”

okay, so clearly he’s not going to change his mind anytime soon. groaning, you stomp away from him and to your friends. you walk over to the kitchen, intent to enjoy this party to the fullest. shots go down in flashes, music blares and deafen, you sway and grind and laugh. nothing will take away this burst of youth where recklessness meets lack of conceivable consequences. 

that’s what you think, anyway, until sweaty hands start rubbing your shoulders. you stiffen. 

“aw, you didn’t need to wear something so slutty for me. you’ve already got my attention.”

you can’t see your friends anymore – there are too many people, too tightly packed together, the lights are too dim and the music too loud to do something about the body pressed up behind you. hairs on your arm standing on end, you fight the disgust recoiling deep in your bones and firmly say, “i’m sorry, i’m really not interested. please leave me alone.”

“don’t be like that, baby. i see the way you look at me.” gripping your hips, he tugs you hard back into him when you try to shuffle away. his clutch is punishing and his nails dig into your skin. you hiss. “let’s go back to my place and i’ll show you a good time.”

pulling you away with him, your friends disappear in the crowd. you’re powerless against his strength. he’s too eager, too clumsy, too drunk to even have any semblance of sense. guys like him are dangerous. guys like him get what they want. guys like him don’t stop at ‘no.’ “let me go! let me fucking go!”

“don’t be a bitc–”

“you hard of hearing or something?” sukuna yanks the guys away by his collar, snatching him up like a puppy. “get the fuck outta here before i beat your ass.”

the guy scoffs, forcing a bravado on. "who the h-hell are you? this is none of your business; she's my girl."

sukuna takes a step forward. a cruel sneer twists his face into something dark, something sinister, practically malevolent. "yeah? explain to me how she finds her way into my bed then."

people are whispering; they've noticed the scene playing out. some are already getting their phones out to record, hoping for a fight. others are taking a step back. they whisper your roommate's name like it's a curse. it reaches your creepy classmate even through his drunken stupor. 

"s-shit." he raises his hands in surrender. "listen man, i didn't know she's with you. i swear. i'll go, alright? just forget about it."

personally unsure why he switched up so quickly when he was doing a fine enough job pretending sukuna's height itself wasn't pissy pants-inducing, you don't dare say a word that might bring his attention back to you. instead, you huddle a little closer to your roommate, who doesn't shake you off when you pinch his shirt for comfort. just like that, the guy that's been bothering you for weeks fades in the background, never to be seen again. hopefully. 

you sigh. “thanks, sukuna.”

he grunts. he’s about to leave, to go back to minding his own business and pretending he doesn’t know you, but then, as if he can’t really help it and he hates himself for it, he eyes you up and down. in that moment, whatever he sees, whatever assessment he makes of your appearance, contrasted with the scene you two find yourself in, urges him to say something that almost sounds painful, so unnatural, so alien to him it brings a shit-eating grin to your face. 

“i’m bored with this place. let’s go…” he winces, rolling his shoulder back. “let’s go home.”

||. WELL , Link sure does have retrograde amnesia. . . . I'm not kidding about that diagnosis , and he definitely should go to therapy,but to actually answer the question : Link ...exists on a perpetual on a scale, and it always depends on "what time period of Link are you asking about", because the answer will change depending on what he does and doesn't remember.

Link before the Calamity (specifically: before the sword) would have been relatively stable. Outside of being a teenage boy with an extreme sense of duty and pressure to perform, he wouldn't have to contend with much. Healthy home, healthy mindsets, healthy life. It's when he pulled the sword and began to shut his emotions down to be a "reliable hero" that some problems would have begun to manifest. In my headcanon : dissociative episodes (+dissociative amneisa &. subsequent fugue) run congruently with his rising stress levels , and are a related but separate issue to his originally-self-imposed selective mutism.

Link is a slow emotional processor. He thinks through his emotions and takes time to sort them out. (Mostly because he really doesn't get bothered by a whole lot.) But when he's "on duty" or otherwise needed... he doesn't feel himself allowed to take the time to sort it out. Not during, and often not afterwards until well later, either. And then only when he's on his own. In Link's world, it's act first, think (and feel) later. ESPECIALLY when all eyes are on him.

At some point in his development into "Knight Link" (which imo was cemented well before he was actually appointed as Zelda's personal knight), Link's solution to a wealth of emotion without any time to process it all was to focus solely on the physical task at hand, whatever that may be. It ... doesn't shut down the emotion spurring the stress... but he can act. He can do something to stave it all off or fix it while it's happening. Face it head on, and quickly. Unfortunately ... even this isn't always possible in his profession. And this mind vs. heart endeavor is a taxing one. As such, if Link is unable to tackle the issue and fix it, he will rapidly begin to deteriorate into a dissociative episode. Specifically dealing with depersonalization. If the stress continues, Link has a tendency to completely emotionally/mentally black out during these periods. (aka: dissociative amnesia). He'll either seem to be completely spacing out, or completely zeroed in on a task from the outside looking in. (It's caused problems and some serious one-sided arguments with his mother before.)

In some conjunction with this, canonically, Link has been known to voice his inner thoughts and feelings less and less over time. By the time he was appointed to Zelda, it's noted that he barely spoke at all. While he is entirely capable of speech, when he undergoes high stress levels, it can become difficult for him to find the words to voice himself freely. (Now, it is worth nothing that Link is naturally a pretty quiet individual (imo even his voice is on the naturally softer side anyways). Link not talking does not automatically mean he's stressed out. But sometimes there is an inherent inability to speak even if he wanted to.)

All of this is true of Amnesia/Post!Calamity Link, although the triggers are different. Post!Calamity Link struggles a lot more often with depersonalization, derealization and dissociative amnesia + fugue, especially the more he comes to remember his/Hyrule's past. Part of that is due to stress, part of is trauma, and part of it is from just barely cheating death/the reincarnation cycle through the Shrine of Resurrection.

Street kid Luo Binghe makes the mistake of letting some weirdo get a hold of him and finds himself locked up in a windowless room somewhere.

The only bright spot in this shit situation is that there's another boy in there with him. Shen Yuan is clearly in considerably worse shape than Luo Binghe and he says he's been here for a very long time. But he's so kind to Binghe and deliberately draws their captor's attention to himself (and away from Binghe) whenever he can.

He also, after Binghe's been there about a month, steals their captor's keys, unlocks the restraints they're both in, and then shoves Binghe out the boarded up window he's been prying open when he had time.

Shen Yuan is too big to fit through the window, he says. They both know that's not true but they can also both hear that their captor is coming-he must have noticed the keys were missing- and Shen Yuan intends to stall him while Binghe gets away.

Binghe promises to come back with help and SY just smiles and nods and shoos him away.

He runs as fast as he can, and once he's far enough away from the house he escaped from he starts asking for help- but no one is listening to him. And he knows if he goes to the local guard he'll probably be handed back over as a runaway slave... And then he sees two men who both seen almost to shine in the dirty city streets... they must be cultivators, they must. If anyone can help him now it will be them. So Luo Binghe throws himself at the taller of the two men and starts begging for help.

Shen Qingqiu is absolutely positive this kid is trying to lure them into an ambush, but Yue Qingyuan- who invited himself along on SQQ's mission without asking him- doesn't think so.

YQY goes with LBH, and SQQ follows, complaining that this is a trick the whole way- up until they discover that yes actually the local nobleman does have a secret room he's been imprisoning children in and there is indeed an almost beaten to death SY in there.

YQY sends SQQ off with SY- gotta get that kid medical attention ASAP- while he and LBH stay behind to Politely Ask Some Questions.

When YQY and LBH arrive back at the sect SY is still in the medical ward but isn't dying and is even awake! LBH is relieved and refuses to leave him again.

YQY fills SQQ in that not only were both boys not slaves, SY was actually the son of the nobleman's first wife she had as the result of an affair. He disappeared from the household around the time the first wife died and all the servants assumed their Lord had sold the boy or killed him outright.

But now that the nobleman has died a sudden and painful and extremely mysterious death it looks like SY has inherited the estate. YQY will have someone from An Ding go sort out the details since SY can't.

SQQ watches YQY smile at the little urchins they've rescued and talk in a way that obviously means he intends them to stay and says, internally 'Fuck no Qi-ge you don't get to replace me with a Shen you actually did manage to save. Absolutely not!'

Out loud the conversation goes:

SQQ: I want the older boy.

YQY: What?

SQQ: You intend for them to stay right? I want the older boy for Qing Jing Peak, you can keep the little one if you want.

YQY, pleased and assuming SQQ and SY must have bonded while he and LBH were away: Of course.

SQQ and SY have not bonded, and once they get back to QJ Peak things are tense. SQQ is low-key kinda jealous of SY and also reminded much too much of himself by the boy. Except he was never as naive and stupid as this kid is! Why is he so nice? How?? And the little shit isn't even afraid of him!

SY, deeply sarcastic: Oh nooo. I'm going to be beaten? Such a thing has never happened to me before! *Coughs because his throat is permanently messed up from being nearly strangled to death*

SQQ, aware that if he hits the kid now he loses: You're not allowed in the library for a week.

SY: What!

SQQ: The next words out of your mouth better be "yes Shizun, sorry Shizun" or it'll be two weeks.

SY: ...yes Shizun, sorry Shizun.

Meanwhile LBH and YQY are having a magical adventure in becoming a found family and are bonding over their obsessions with their respective Shens. They absolutely come visit QJ Peak at least twice a week much to SQQ's displeasure and SY's delight.

This one goes out to all the bitches who love some good Safehouse Era Horror. It's me, I'm bitches. I want Jon and Martin to be fucked up and eldritch but I want them to be fucked up and eldritch and loved

(Notes under the cut because I can't help myself. Heads up, I do go into some detail of how Jon gets injured so I can explain my thought process for how I designed his scars. All canon-typical and fairly clinical in tone.)

Here's how I picture Safehouse Jon!

He doesn't need glasses anymore by this point, so he should just be wearing empty frames, but I drew this before I settled on my glasses headcanons. This drawing looks better with the reflection anyways.

He hasn't gotten a haircut since before his promotion to Head Archivist. He doesn't love the weight of it on his neck, but he also uses it to fidget, and he really doesn't want to go through the whole process of cutting it. He's disliked haircuts since he was a kid (People: Bad. Small talk: Bad. Touching: Bad. Loud sounds: Bad. People talking all at once: Bad) and since his time with the Circus he's only grown more reluctant to go and get it done.

At this length his hair is naturally pretty curly but he is. Not taking care of it. I actually put a lot of effort into trying to make it look brittle and tangled (I have a lot of experience lol, my hair is quite thick and I've always hated taking care of it. Yes I am also projecting my feelings about going to a hairdressers onto him why do you ask.)

The various scars were a bit of a strange task, but anyone who has seen my takes on The Bad Kids knows I'm not averse to selective realism in my fiction. Easiest one was the neck, I always pictured Daisy making a vertical cut based on "through the voice box". The larynx is longer than it is wide, so I think Daisy would go for the method that dealt damage across the largest total surface area. Yes I am aware that I'm speaking the same way Martin does when he explains his corkscrew.

The worm scars were easy because I barely drew any. There are a few marks on his cheek, but they're just surface bites. I picture most of his encounter with Prentiss showing on his legs, particularly on the right side, with enough damage there that he starts using a cane after the incident to keep weight off his right leg. More research to be done on this particular detail.

Finally the burn on his hand from Jude. This was the weirdest one to figure out just because of the nature of the injury. How do you quantify the damage done to an epidermis by a living manifestation of sometimes-boiling wax that can heat and cool at will? I settled on it being a second-degree burn that healed supernaturally fast, containing the damage to the space Jude had direct contact with. He'd probably have some mobility issues there as well. I know there are ways to help with mobility and pain after a severe burn, but I don't know how much of it Jon would actually. Do. Like I said, definitely further research to be done on these last two.

Hey so I'm gonna ask you to stop and consider the horror of the watcher. The helplessness. The guilt. The inherent terror of being a spectator, a participant by proximity but not by action. The horror of not being able to look away, of being a bystander. Jon forgets to blink sometimes. But wouldn't it be so much worse if there were no eyelids at all? That's how I interpret the description of The Archivist being "All Eyes" :D

I love a good Many-Eyed Jon, so I whipped up my own interpretation here. I think the more he Becomes the more he starts to resemble the thing from the dreams. He has a lot more control of it in S5, but it still creeps up on him and he has to consciously go back to a human shape.
