Hey! So I've unintentionally been doing a social experiment and I might as well share my brief findings. Well, finding.
You know how historical women (like pre-1960s) always had updos of some sort and it would be a very intimate thing to show someone your hair down? Well, I kinda replicated that feeling.
My hair is far from being long enough to create all those braided updos, but I do own a claw clip. Yep, exactly one. There isn't a day I don't wear it.
I never really liked wearing my hair down, even when it was longer and I was younger, because it would get caught on everything, get greasy and damaged faster. So, I've been wearing it up since my early teens. However, back then I only did high, mid and low ponies, maybe a bun sometimes. Or a half up half down.
Around two years ago or so I always wore my hair down because it was so short that I couldn't put it even in a low pony. I was very irritated with my hair at the time, to say the least.
While for the past year I've been wearing it up in a claw clip bun, mostly because hair is so important to me, that I don't want to share it with everyone, if that makes sense.
And so, whenever people see my hair down on the odd occasion, they are so surprised. It's so cute, funny and entertaining. You'd think people don't really notice these miniscule changes and boundaries, or at least I thought that, but they do. They really do. Those who care, anyway. Which is wholesome.
Not saying always wearing your hair up is for everyone, 'cause it isn't, but that's the beauty of preferences, is it not?

So I'm working on the Livia nodus hairstyle, because I find it delightfully ridiculous, but also achievable with my hair. There are a few variations on the theme, but it's always bun in the back, silly bump in the front, some kind of curl or twist on the sides, and a braid or section of hair running down the center/part:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there are slso some portraits that aren't Livia that also have similar styles.
I did it again last weekend, for the first time with a rat under the poof, and I'm mostly happy with how it turned out. These photos are after being outside at the event all day so it's a bit frazzled...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did cheat a bit and use a modern hair tie to secure the twisted sides into a ponytail in the back because my hair is just too slick to hold onto both halves halves and stitch securely without being able to see it, but the braid is sewn down my part and the bun is sewn in place.
The front section I just style fully wet and use a bunch of hair oil to keep in place.

Super petty, but I dislike how often female characters in asoiaf have loose hair
Like come one, where are the intricate braids, fancy hats, and veils!

So there's a growing movement of European-heritage people trying to move to more natural hair-care with less frequent washing, hair oiling, protective styling (which is VERY DIFFERENT than the kind of protective styling you would want for type 4 hair), etc. A word of advice:
If you are doing truly protective styling, you will notice a LOT more hairfall when you wash your hair. This is normal. This is okay. Your hair is not falling out at an increased rate; it's that hair lost throughout the day is getting caught in the style and is not able to properly fall until you wash or thoroughly brush your hair. You will notice over time less random hair in your living space, but we tend to notice presence of stuff faster than absence.

Following on from the simple modesty of the 1300s, female hair in the 1400s became a lot more elaborate thanks to the addition of hair pieces, ribbon and other decorations. Braided styles evolved into very detailed and decorative concoctions. Styles also became more flowy and romantic, often with curls framing the face. CC links under the cut.

Don’t feel stupid for asking! Drawing is hard no matter what you’re drawing, so don’t be afraid to ask for help^^ But honestly even I feel like the best of my hijabis look a little egg-like, and that’s okay!

harlem pin-up locs ♥️
here’s a 1920s-inspired pin-up dreadlock twist hairstyle that is a modern take on the finger wave hairdo. finger waves have been a staple in the black community for decades as it was very popular during the 1920s, 1930s, 1990s, and even now as we enter the 2020s. this hairstyle was largely inspired by these two pictures here and here so huge credit to the hairstylist aggie_hair on ig for making this beautiful innovation! my hair is named after the new york neighborhood of harlem and specifically the harlem renaissance. if you don’t know, the harlem renaissance or the “new negro movement” was a vibrant african american cultural movement that happened during the 1920s and 1930s. similar movements also happened in other cities throughout the american north due to the occurrence of the great migration where thousands of african americans moved up north to escape violent racial discrimination and persecution enforced by the racist jim crow laws in the deep south (although life in the north wasn’t that much better). i would love to say more as this is one of my favorite historical periods to research/learn about like ever but, i highly encourage y’all to do your own research on it (especially if you’re nonblack and/or not familiar with african american history) and learn about the several artists, thinkers, and innovators of that time period! tysm for reading and again tysm to my lovely testers! <333

Gytha Hair Set
Here's a Medieval-inspired set of hairs with an updo, half-updo and braid. Proper Medieval hairstyles usually involved veils or head coverings so these actually lean more towards Renaissance styles (which is another set I'm working on!) but they fit the whole Medieval Fantasy category perfectly.
There are 4 styles of net with 9 swatches and white or black pearls. V1 (with and without pearls) which is pictured in the preview and V2 (with and without pearls) which is less busy. I'll put a preview for those below.
V1 with the pearls is a higher polycount than I'd have preferred at just over 4,000 but that was the lowest I could go while still maintaining it's quality. Combined with the hair's though the total is still under 10k which is my unofficial limit so most computers ought to be able to handle it well enough.
TOU: Feel free to recolour or edit to your hearts content, just don’t make people pay for it. (full tou here)
