For a show that's progressive, one-of-a-kind, ground-breaking for its time, and relies on "Show, don't Tell" a lot throughout the series, it bugs me how ATLA (or, more specifically, Bryke) preferred to tell the audience that Aang is a master airbender without showing us why. I mean, Toph, Zuko, Azula, and Katara are all shown practicing and improving their mastery in bending (although Katara has become rather overpowered), so why can't Aang have the same treatment?
Yes, Aang may be a child prodigy, and he did get airbending tattoos from inventing the air scooter, but I personally think that inventing an airbending technique (which demonstrates impressive ability and skill) is a way to gain the arrows prematurely, but isn't a requirement. Nothing in the show ever suggests just how far he's mastered his native element, let alone the other three. In the beginning of Sozin's Comet, Part 1: The Phoenix King (3:18), Aang says he thinks he still needs to practice his firebending more (which in hindsight makes sense, as he's just started relearning it from the dragons five episodes ago), and Toph notes that his earthbending could use more work too. Right off the bat, Aang is two elements away from complete mastery of all four, but later on he's seen practicing waterbending with Katara, implying he hasn't mastered it either.
We don't even see Aang practicing his airbending by himself post-iceberg, preferring to show off to random girls (like in Kyoshi Island). He just learns the elements, but doesn't really learn the philosophies behind each element. In this regard, he makes Kuruk and Roku look venerated in contrast. (To be fair to Aang, he had a specific deadline to master the four elements before Sozin's Comet that no other Avatar besides Wan had to deal with, but couldn't he try to make an effort to learn from the other nations?) Additionally, compared to Tenzin and Zaheer, Aang doesn't stand a chance against either of them (even though Tenzin is his son, but since Tenzin wasn't the Avatar, he could focus on upholding the Air Nomad culture and legacy). Even Jinora could go toe-to-toe with him at similar ages. He isn't really that impressive in any of the elements, to be honest; we've seen what a master of any specific element can do in both ATLA and LOK, as well as in the novels.
The main thing people often get wrong is that mastery isn't a final goal; it's a specific mindset. As in Pai Sho, what separates true masters from everyone else is that true masters always look for improvement in their strategy or skills. That's why Aang isn't a real master of the four elements: He always takes the easy way out, never trying to better himself or improve what he can already do.
I think this quote from Zaheer perfectly sums up what I've been saying: When you base your expectations on what you see, you blind yourself to the possibilities of a new reality. Even though it stems from his anarchist beliefs, it is genuinely one of the more insightful pieces of wisdom in the franchise because it promotes progress, a constant theme in life. Toph was able to invent metalbending because she wanted to "see" a reality where she could be recognized for her own talent in spite of her blindness; Zuko could learn firebending from the dragons because he could see a reality where he would regain his honor and fight alongside the Avatar, and so on. By contrast, Aang only takes things from surface-level, not putting any effort into understanding the true meaning of being the Avatar.
Speaking of Pai Sho, guess which Avatar constantly improved his/her abilities? Kuruk. Unlike Aang, Kuruk readily asked his companions, Jianzhu, Hei-Ran, and Kelsang, to continue teaching him, ever after he mastered the four elements that he was required to do, saying they would all benefit from the experience (the "true master" quote I mentioned above was actually said by him). Not only that, it was even inverted; sometimes they taught Kuruk, other times he taught them (which technically makes him the first known Avatar to teach bending to others). He was right, as during their lifetimes, they were the most powerful benders of their respective elements in the world!
Kuruk also had an intuitive connection to each of the four bending philosophies, which to this day remains unrivaled by any other Avatar, and was also one of the first people to suggest the idea that the four elements are connected (homeboy's literally a younger Water Tribe Avatar version of proto-Iroh, I'm honestly not going to be surprised if Iroh actually learned his belief from Kuruk during the former's visits to the Spirit World over tea and Pai Sho matches). If you ask me, Mone, learning the cultures and philosophies of the four nations is way more important than mastering the four elements, because the Avatar isn't just the bridge between the four nations; he/she is also the symbol of a unified world, and the franchise is saying that only one Avatar even bothered to do that? In my opinion, if we go by this rule, that easily cements Kuruk as the greatest Avatar in history!
Aang, on the other hand, never does this. Instead, he puts the Air Nomads on a high pedestal (which in turn causes him to place Katara on a high pedestal), and doesn't respect or learn from other nations' philosophies. He openly disrespects SWT culture and actively makes sure Tenzin doesn't have any exposure to the culture that Tenzin still belongs too, and worse, he pushes his own culture on other people's throats (remember the time he forced a homeless couple to "give up on hope because it's a big waste of time"? Or the time he forced Katara to not murder Yon Rha?) and values his own nation and values above the rest of the world (like the time he refused to kill Firelord Ozai because "all life is sacred", even though he has actually killed before, but if he doesn't kill Ozai, the latter's going to burn the entire Earth Kingdom to the ground!). That doesn't sound like something the Avatar is allowed to do, but Aang gets away with it anyway because ... hero?
There's actually another Avatar who focused on his/her own nation above the rest of the world. Avatar Szeto, Yangchen's predecessor, became a government official in his homeland, the Fire Nation. Under his tenure, the Fire Nation transformed from a fragmented, disaster-stricken state to the centralized, technologically-advanced nation we know of today. Unfortunately, this led him to neglect the other nations and, shortly after his death, the four nations were caught in a political event known as the Platinum Affair, which Yangchen had to deal with, eventually kick-starting the cycle of the current Avatar fixing their past lives' mistakes, while leaving problems for their future selves to fix. This problem might have even led to the growing ambition of Firelords Zoryu and Sozin as dictators, with the latter starting the Hundred Years War.
Aang not only valued his own nation's values above the others, he also forced said values on his non-Air Nomad companions; signed anti-miscegenation laws and tried to forcefully deport Fire Nationals from the colonies to return the land to the Earth Kingdom, even though they had already blended in with Earth Kingdom citizens, didn't wan to be separated from their families, and Zuko perceived the citizens of mixed heritage as his own subjects; refused to let his family practice SWT culture, even though his children could benefit from being members of both cultures, not just one or the other, and set an example for mixed-race families around the world; refused to teach Kya and Bumi Air Nomad culture because he thought they weren't airbenders and therefore "not real Air Nomads", even though they were just as Air Nomad as Tenzin was, if not more; and forced Tenzin to uphold the legacy of an entire nation on his shoulders. The fact that this was all written by complete accident is the cherry on top, representing just how badly Bryke screwed up.
... On a completely unrelated note, The Other Side of Paradise by Glass Animals (which is also one of my favorite songs) is definitely a Kuruk song. The last third of the song in particular sums up his tragic journey as the Avatar so well, and I always think of him while listening to it.

But she is…soft and shy.
It was one of those nights when everyone gathered around a campfire. It was like our monthly family gathering.
In a moment of silence, Suki stared at Katara for a while. When Katara returned her gaze, Suki spoke.
"I have to ask," I knew from the tone alone that the question would be about Azula.
They always did. Katara didn't know if it was concern or morbid curiosity. She preferred to think it was the former. For her own sanity.
"About what?" Just because she knows doesn't mean she'll answer quickly. Pride, mostly.
"Azula." Hoping her surprised face was believab - "And you already knew that" Well, she had to try.
So she sighs and goes for it. “Sure” She has learned not to fight it.
"I can't imagine her showing any affection to anyone".
That's not a question. But as she was curious as to what Suki was getting at, she let it go.
"Why?"
Questions about Azula usually consisted of "Are you sure she doesn't treat you badly" or "If she's blackmailing you, blink twice". This one was unexpected.
Seeing Katara's confused face, Suki elaborated further on her question.
"It's just that she has this whole femme fatale aura about her. So I can't imagine her cuddling or saying I love you".
"Wait, that means if you've imagined it-" before Sokka could finish the sentence Suki covered his mouth with her hand. Considering Suki's strength, Katara thought it was a miracle that her brother still had all his teeth.
Seeing how Suki's question wasn't born out of hate, but out of pure curiosity. Katara decided to be honest.
"Although it may seem otherwise, Azula is quite shy when it comes to relationships. Everyone looked on, puzzled and confused.
Zuko was the first to speak. “Moving on from the images that Suki does in her brain about my sister. Azula shy? Is she teaching you to lie?”
“What? No! Well she has offered to ‘It’s a great skill Katara’ “said Katara, badly imitating Azula's voice. "But no, although she's more confident now which is...amazing."
While Katara was lost in thought, the rest of the group looked on in surprise.
Suki reached over and clicked her fingers in front of her face, snapping her out of her trance. "I think I speak for all of us, we need more details or context."
"NO MORE DETAILS OF WHAT SHE WAS THINKING," Sokka and Zuko said at the same time.
Suki shook her head as if to say 'well', Aang agreed and Toph said 'I wouldn't mind'.
At that moment, Katara became serious, looking at her friends one by one, and said, "What I am about to say is not going to leave here, and if Azula finds out, she will have my approval in the methods of revenge she wishes to use against you.”
They all nodded in agreement.
"I need a verbal response".
And then they all chanted in unison, "Yes, Master Katara, we promise".
After her friends' affirmation, Katara made herself comfortable in her seat and began to speak.
"At the beginning I also thought Azula would be all 'I know what I'm doing and I'm in charge' but at the very moment of our first kiss she asked me three times if she could kiss me and she stayed static until I was the one who did it".
"That's actually quite sweet," Suki said before Katara could continue.
"After that, she kept asking me if she could kiss me an average of 2 or 3 times at a time."
Before continuing Katara looked at Sokka and Zuko. "Cover your ears and hum a song loudly."
They did, but just to be sure, Katara said, "No, Suki, you can't take your clothes off right now," and when she saw that Sokka didn't react, and Zuko even less, she continued.
"Our first time was more Azula asking me if I was doing it right or if I really wanted to do it than actually doing anything. It was a fantastic experience, but also a bit peculiar.”
"I don't know why you didn't tell me to cover my ears too," Aang said, blushing.
"You are more mature emotionally and you are not a brother to either of us."
“Still”
With that said Katara gestured to Zuko and Sokka that they could hear again. The two of them were not curious to know what they had missed.
"I think what struck me most about all of this is that it took Azula months to hug me without me asking her to, even though she clearly wanted to."
Katara looked up at the night sky which was full of stars as a soft smile came over her face.
“But now she does. When we are alone she is like this big koala. It’s amazing how fierce and prideful is most of the time and how she changes when she’s comfortable.”
“So yeah, she’s soft and shy but I really love that side of her. As much as I love her femme fatale aura.”
Sokka and Aang were crying. Suki was surprised, not to see these two cry - which they usually do quite a lot- but to have discovered this side of Azula.
“So the sex is mind-blowing now?” ask Toph not reading the room.
“WE DON'T WANT TO KNOW THAT” Zuko replied without giving Katara time to respond.
"Don't worry, the change in the beating of the sugar queen's heart answered for her".
"Oh Agni" Zuko complained.
"I don't know if this makes me see her in a different way, or if I still don't believe you, but thank you for sharing" Even if Suki is the most sceptical person about her relationship with Azula, she has always been a great support to Katara.
"Ok now I think we can talk about how Suki thinks of Azula being a femme fatale?" said Toph with a big grin on her face.
"NO!" shouted the two brothers of the southern water tribe and the Fire Lord.
Tumblr media
“Can I give you a hug?” asked Katara to Azula who was sitting next to her.
"Since when do you ask for it?" said Azula turning to look at her with a raised eyebrow.
“I want to be the soft and shy one sometimes”
“What are you implying? I am not like that”
"Sure, sure," Katara said as she wrapped her arms around her. "Hug first and then we'll argue about your self-denial."
And instead of arguing Azula settled into Katara's arms, grabbing her around the waist and buried her face on Katara's neck.
“I am not soft and shy”
So Katara kissed her temple and said "Sure".

PUT YOUR AUDIO ON and wait for the elements symbols to end for the animatic to start
So, i put all my mind into the meaning of every line of this song.
Can i tell you my fav ones?? You can't answer so i will.
-every night has its day, so magical- for Zuko: the simbology of the dark and the light, the evil and the good.
- And if there's love in this life, there's no obstacle- for Mai: it's reference to that: "you miscalculated: i love Zuko more than i fear you". I love Maiko.
-For every tyrant a tear for the vurnerable- for Katara. You know, that " I will never, ever turn my back on people who need me!"
-in every lost soul the bones for a miracle- for Suki. This is the hardest to explain. Have you read "Suki Alone"? i would take that "lost" not as figurative. She lost her hope, but then the miracle: Sokka and Zuko arrived!
-"How did I get so blind and so cynical?- for Azula: at the beggining i wanted to give this to Toph, but then i thought that was more Azula's.
And i know, Ty Lee is between everyone at the end: i just wanted her to be there:)
If u want to see in on yt, i appreciate it!
This song is Waiting for love by Avicii sped up version

Similarities of Zuko and Apollo:
• (Kind of) Sixteen year-olds who started off as bad/troubled people who redeem themselves and become better people in the end of their respective stories
• Connected to the sun - Zuko is a firebender and Apollo is the literal god of the sun
• Both's aliases begin with the letter L (Li for Zuko and Lester for Apollo)
• Both have shitty abusive dads that are/were monarchs and shot lightning at them at some point
• Have pseudo-little sisters related to the colour green (Zuko and Toph's relationship is a sibling one and you can't tell me otherwise and Meg and Apollo are obvious)
• Both of their stories end with them gaining high positions of power - Zuko as Firelord and Apollo as a god.
• Both of them have biological full sisters who could easily beat them in a fight and had some kind of girl group - Azula with her powerful firebending and squad of Mai and Ty Lee and Artemis, who we all know would beat Apollo, and her Hunters
I have no idea why I'm posting this but it just seemed fun to post. Anyway the main differences between them is Apollo is horribly pathetic whilst Zuko actually gets shit done(he is very dedicated to his cause). Also they look entirely different, have different names, Apollo is also related to lots of artsy stuff while Zuko is only related to theatre in terms of artsy stuff. Also Apollo is a literal god while Zukos human but that's not really important.

Meanwhile, at the Avatar Studios cafeteria:
Sokka: First, they told me to not hog the smarts of the group. Then they tell me I'm not funny. Stupid micromanaging...
Toph: You and me both...
(Pan to a table with Zuko and Mai talking with Gene Yang)
Zuko: What kind of writing was that?! You wrote me like I was an egotistical manchild! And you wrote Mai-
Mai: I'll handle this...you wrote me like a sociopathic spoiled brat!
Gene: I'm sorry you feel that way. I was just trying to use my experiences to develop your characters.
Zuko: I find out that you're ghostwriting for the new movies, I'm coming after you!
Mai: Yeah, and I'll show you what it's like to be on the wrong side of my knife.
(Stabs a dagger into the table, scaring both Gene and Zuko)
(Pan over to another table with Mike, Bryan, and Azula who is munching on some mochi and has a fruit drink. She has her boots on the table cause at this point, she couldn't give a fuck)
Mike: The movie's dull. It feels like we're going through the motions and nobody is learning-
Azula: I learned not to pull another Smoke and Weed. Especially after my one-shot. But I'm not on the writing team, so what the hell do I know?
Bryan: Okay, look. We're gonna repair your image. And the way we're going to do that...is with a new scheme we cooked up!
Azula: Well for starters, I cook up the schemes. Second, we've been over this. 180s in my character doesn't work.
Mike: Well we can't exactly let you beat the heroes and upset the status quo. Nor can we just let you become a hero. You have a reputation to uphold!
Azula: Buddy, if you can't see the potential in a child soldier healing in what's supposed to be your "Golden Age", we have nothing to say to each other.

Every time Katara Comforts Sokka
"The Spirit World":
Katara: Sokka! [She runs to him and embraces him, while other villagers embrace their loved ones.] Sokka: What happened? Katara: You were trapped in the Spirit World for 24 hours! How are you feeling?
"The Storm":
Katara: [Pressing a wet rag onto Sokka's forehead.] This should bring your fever down. Sokka: You know what I love about Appa the most? His sense of humor. Katara: That's nice. I'll tell him.
"Avatar Day":
Sokka: [Sadly.] I feel like I've lost part of my identity. [He jumps up and moves Aang's hat slightly so that he can point at Aang's arrow.] Imagine if you lost your arrow, or Katara lost her … [Makes a hair loopies gesture with a somewhat bored look.] hair loopies. He slowly saunters over to the stall, where Katara gives him a loving hug in order to comfort him before she holding her hands in front of herself while smiling lovely at Sokka.
"The Earth King":
Sokka: Someone has to stay here with the Earth King and help him plan for the invasion. [Stands up.] I guess that's me. Katara: No, Sokka. I know how badly you wanna help Dad. You go to Chameleon Bay. I'll stay here with the king.
[This last one is a little dubious as "comforting," although obviously Katara is being very nice.
"Sokka's Master":
Sokka: It's just, all you guys can do this awesome bending stuff like putting out forest fires, and flying around and [Side-view of Toph, Aang and Katara.] making other stuff fly around. I can't fly around, okay? [View of Sokka from behind.] I can't do anything. Side-view of the group. Katara: That's not true. No one can read a map like you.
"DoBS Part 1":
Hakoda: Ah, a little, better. I need, to get back to the troops. [Attempts to stand but is too weak to.] Ahh! Katara: You're hurt, badly. You can't fight anymore. Hakoda: Everyone's counting on me to lead this mission Katara, I won't let them down. [Attempts to stand again but can't.] Ahh! Sokka: Can't you heal him any faster? Katara: I'm doing everything I can. Sokka: [Looks around before looking confidant.] I'll do it. Katara: No offense Sokka, but you're not exactly Mr. Healing Hands. Sokka: No. [Stands confidently.] I'll lead the invasion force. Katara: Don't be crazy Sokka. Sokka: Maybe I am a little crazy, but the eclipse is about to start and we need to be up that volcano by the time it does. Hakoda: You can do this. [Cuts to a close-up of him.] I'm proud of you son. Katara: I still think you're crazy, but I'm proud of you too.
Katara and Sokka were very close as siblings, and Katara was parentifed to the point that Sokka saw here as his "replacement mother." Despite that, we only see Katara comfort Sokka 6 times in the entire series, despite them appearing together in significant roles in nearly every episode in the series.
By contrast, "evil, heartless" Mai comforts Zuko 5 times, despite barely appearing on screen with him. "Evil, heartless, terrible sister" Azula tries to comfort Zuko 6 times, despite only being on a semi-decent terms with him for a sixth of the series.

Takes on ATLA characters on a roller coaster? Recently, I had the rare opportunity to gather a large group of friends and go to an amusment park when this idea popped up in my head.
Im specifically wondering what type of person they are when on rides.
Examples:
- Scared Shitless
- Screems before the ride actually picks up to scare the others
- Chill / Deadpan Expression
- Trying to act chill but is actually terrified
- Trying to act chill but can't hold back their laughter seeing how everyone is reacting.
Stuff like this.
Hello, anon!! Thanks for the ask!!
Ohhhhh. I really like this!
Aang - Laughing his head off. He'd be the one who's just having the time of his life and wants to go on every roller coaster in the park.
Katara - She'd be scared at first but once she rode one or two, she'd get the hang of it. I do think she'd a fan of the smaller rides but if Aang really wants to go on a roller coaster she'll go with him.
Sokka - He's definitely someone who acts chill but is actually terrified. He keeps saying facts about how often roller coasters break down, saying it's a very small percentage, and the group knows that's just him trying to calm himself down.
Toph - Scares Sokka to death. She can't see so I don't think she'd be that afraid. Plus, she trusts that the Gaang won't put her on a death trap. So, since she can't see all around her, she decides to make a game of scaring Sokka. She's someone who could bring a screw onto the ride just to pass it to Sokka and say "I think this fell off."
(Everyone else is below)
Zuko - Similar to Katara, I think he'd need to ride once or twice but once he gets used to it he likes them. Unlike Katara, he grows to love them and will constantly want to ride one whenever they go to a park. The only time he's not a big fan of them is when they're in the dark. He has to be able to see what's coming.
Suki - Loves every second of it. She's the one who drags Sokka with her all the time and will calm him down when they get on. Be it a giant roller coaster with loops or a small one with one fall, she loves them all.
Azula - I think she's more of a fan of games that she can do herself. Like those little dart games or water shooter games where she's able to play against people and win something, so when Zuko or Ty Lee drag her to a roller coaster she's mostly just annoyed. She does laugh a bit when a twist comes and Zuko wasn't expecting it (blind in one eye) even if it does get her a little hit from Ty Lee.
Ty Lee - Loves them but also hates them. It's weird. She'll be jumping up and down in line then get on and once the ride gets going instantly latch onto Azula for dear life. Azula keeps telling her that they don't have to go on the roller coasters if she doesn't want to but then Ty Lee pulls her sad eyes and five minutes later they're in line again.
Mai - Deadpan expression. Even for roller coasters that take your picture, Mai has no expression. There could be a sudden 50 foot drop and Mai doesn't look scared or happy or anything. The group comes to find out later that Mai is someone who watches videos of the rides before going on them so she knows what to expect.

I can't remember if I posted about it already, or if I just can't find it (because searching for something on here is impossible), but I'm thinking about my Avatar story idea from when I was a teenager (literally right after the original series ended, and way before we had Korra or the comics as a continuation), so here it is again-
-Zuko realizes his dad will never tell him where Ursa is, and just keeps using it as a bargaining chip, so decides to ignore Ozai and focus on helping put the Earth Kingdom/Water Tribes back together, and get the Fire Nation out of "war-mode"
-He also tries to figure out how to help his sister; Azula isn't being violent now that she's fully accepted defeat, but she is SUPREMELY depressed (and seems to expect him to "execute" her, which he very much has no interest in doing). Iroh and some others from the White Lotus find a group of Healers, some Waterbenders, who also understand emotional/mental pain, who agree to help her (she does improve eventually, but it is painful for her to even go home to the Fire Nation... finally realizing how badly her father messed her up was a big deal). Eventually, Ty Lee and Mai visit her, sort of trying to have a "new" friendship
-A couple years go by. Things have mostly settled down, but every once in a while there is a problem (a group in the Fire Nation who think Zuko shouldn't be Fire Lord call themselves "Azula's Army". they aren't very powerful, but are definitely annoying, and sow discontent with other people). After an adventure helping a young Fire Sage who is training, Aang and Zuko find some old scrolls about strange "distant islands"
-Sokka recognizes some of the scrolls are from Wan Shi Tong's library (stolen however long ago). The satchel they were in belonged to Zhao; these were other things he found when looking into information about the Moon and Ocean Spirits. One scroll with a map has the island closest to the Fire Nation circled, with notes in the corner about this being a "Secret the Fire Lords keep". Zuko researches a little more, and finally has the answer...
-This island was where a once "disgraced" Fire Lord was sent, and since then, other Fire Lords have used it as a place for banishment. While it is more common to just banish people from the Fire Nation itself, when a Fire Lord wants to entirely erase somebody without actually "killing" them, they are sent to that island. More secrets imply that a few soldiers who were part of Sozin's army secretly saved infants from the Air Temples during attacks. They weren't strong enough to outright oppose the Fire Lord, and there wasn't enough of them to fight the other soldiers, but they wanted to at least save the children. The babies were smuggled away to the island. This is also where Ozai sent Ursa
-The group decides to make a big trip to the island; after all, they have the possibility of not only finding Zuko's mother, but Aang might NOT be the last Airbender! Aang, Zuko, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Mai, Ty Lee, Suki, and Hakoda are all going out on a ship with a few crew members (it would be too far for Appa to fly over the sea, but he and Momo are still along for the ride). Zuko is leaving behind Iroh as temporary Fire Lord, and Suki asked some of her Kyoshi Warriors to help
-At one point as they travel, they find a small, much newer island, formed by a volcano that has started to grow plant life. They all stay for the night to camp and gather some fresh fruit/do some fishing. Katara has figured out a way to "pull apart" salt water so it can be drinkable. Toph just REALLY needs a good dose of LAND before sailing again. In a small tide pool, Zuko teaches Toph how to swim (suddenly remembering how his older cousin Lu Ten taught him way back on Ember Island, before Azula was even born. she finally gets her own Zuka field-trip!)
-They finally arrive at the island; there are a LOT of people here. Some who's ancestors were banished by a Fire Lord generations ago, some who were sailors that got stranded out here after bad storms. A few people who had been Fire Nation soldiers back then decided to stay, not wanting to be part of the war anymore. They all have their own communities... and so many of them are Airbenders! Aang is very excited, and shows off some of his own abilities. The people are amazed, especially because they have never been taught any actual "techniques". Their history and heritage has been lost to them. As everybody walks around, Zuko eagerly looks for a familiar face... when he hears somebody suddenly call his name. He and his mother finally meet again, crying and embracing each other (she sees his scar, and when she touches it and sees his eyes glance down sadly, she knows Ozai did it)
-Lots of catching up, both happy and sad. Some of the people banished here were Waterbenders that had been captured by the Fire Army, in the attempt to have them control whirlpools/tidal waves (searching for some long-lost treasure). The Waterbenders would pretend to be swept away, and escape, eventually finding this island. Now that the restrictions that "banished" them are gone, everybody on the island is welcome to return to the outside world. The ship isn't big enough for everybody, but Ursa and several of the Airbenders make the return trip (more boats will be sent later, both so people on the island can see the other Nations, and so the island can be visited; they won't be alone out here anymore)
-Ursa and Hakoda talk a lot together while sailing back (wishing they could have protected their children better), and Aang shares stories of the Air Nomads with the Airbenders, also teaching some of them how to make an Air Scooter. When they arrive, Iroh is happy to see Ursa again. Zuko takes her to go visit Azula, who at first doesn't believe her mother could return, or EVER love her... but Ursa reassures her daughter; she is real, and so is her love
-Zuko makes one final visit to Ozai; his father has gotten a little "impatient", expecting that Zuko wouldn't be able to resist coming back to ask about his mother for so long... Iroh also walks in, and Ozai tries to mock his brother. Azula walks in as well, finally confronting her father. This throws him, because she looks different (short hair, no make-up), and also because she doesn't care about his approval anymore. He tries to bargain with her, but she refuses his offers. Then, Ursa walks in. Her son and his friends found her, WITHOUT him. Now, she is back with both of her children. Ozai is struck silent. Finally, Aang walks in, telling Ozai that his ancestor failed, the other Airbenders were NOT wiped-out. They will all walk out of here, and have happy lives. He will stay. Nobody wants anything from him anymore. Too late, after they leave, Ozai starts shouting, trying to beg or threaten, but nobody listens (nobody cares)
-In the years that follow, the other islands are eventually located and explored, with more people found there (new people who are Fire/Water/Earth/Air Benders, but with different cultures than the Four Nations. Sokka is sort of the official diplomat for making new friends, and eventually, all the new places are able to travel and communicate with each other). Hakoda and Ursa grow closer, but take a while to act on any romantic feelings (they're worried their children might find it awkward, and Hakoda especially didn't want Katara and Sokka to think he doesn't care about their mother's memory... but the kids are all very happy about it! this makes them all family). Aang helps the Airbenders who want to move back to the Air Temples adjust and recover. People from other nations who have made homes near the Temples are welcome to stay as well, and also help repair the buildings. Hakoda and Ursa live part of the year on Ember Island, and part in the Southern Water Tribe village that was his home (which has also been rebuilt). Azula eventually feels content enough to move on, and she lives on Kyoshi Island with Ty Lee (Azula avoids bending, finally realizing she has PTSD, but she can still help train people with hand-to-hand fighting techniques). Toph makes a home for herself outside of the swamp, where she also begins teaching Metalbending (haha, yes, ironic~). Now that Zuko is very at home being Fire Lord, Iroh stays in Ba Sing Se full time for his tea shop, but returns for special occasions (like when Zuka and Mai get married). Katara surprises Aang with a gift one day; a necklace~

Gaang headcanons + Ozai's Angles
Aang: He/him, straight ally. If you tell him (as a girl) "I like girls" He'll say "Oh, me too!" Or if you tell him you wanna change your name, or have different pronouns, he will automatically respect it. Because the monks always said "Love has no boundaries, love who you want."
Katara: She/her, straight ally. She really doesn't care who you like (not in a bad way) because her brother is bi, and she wants everyone to be happy and comfortable with who they are. She will respect pronouns and chosen names. (She will accidentally mess up the first few times and get really mad at herself)
Sokka: He/him, bisexual. He can't explain why he likes girls and guys. He just does. He will occasionally slip at preferred pronouns, he will mentally curse himself out. He doesn't get very happy with himself.
Toph: She/her, polysexual or pansexual. She cares for personally (duh). She tries to respect others, but yeah, she's sassy and kinda mean. If you tell her something like preferred name, pronouns or sexuality, she'll respond with, "Okay." And go on with her life.
Zuko: He/him, omnisexual. You think being on a ship with only men would make him come out as still straight? No. He didn't like any of the men, but it brought out some questions for himself. Of course one of the first things he did as Fire Lord was make same sex marriage. He wants everyone to be happy. Tell him your preferred name, pronouns and your sexuality, he'll respect it. He's nice like that. Yeah, he'll slip a few times, but he has a bit of a crappy memory sometimes.
Suki: She/her (trans fem), bisexual. She loves and respects everyone's pronouns, chosen names and sexuality's. She wants people to be happy and accepted like how she was. She knew she was a girl from a young age (so did her village) and they all accepted her, especially the Kyoshi warriors.
Azula: She/her, lesbian. Has internal homophobia from being raised by Ozai. If you tell her your preferred name, pronouns and your sexuality, she won't care. In secret she'll call you by that, but around Ozai and other officials, she won't. Always liked girls, but never had anyone to talk to about it.
Ty Lee: She/her, bisexual. Her bi awakening was Azula. She really liked Azula but it slowly became fear. Tell her your preferred name, pronouns and your sexuality, she will be very happy you told her, and she'll hug you. She likes it when people are honest with her.
Mai: She/her, bisexual, demiromantic. Tell her your stuff (I'm sorry, I'm done typing all that) she won't care. She'll just act like she always knew and say something like "Yeah, I was waiting for you to tell me." Or "Took you long enough." Her bi awakening was Ty Lee.

my thoughts on Netflix's ATLA live action
Tumblr media
As an adult who watched this show growing up and was there for the countdown to the comet (iykyk!!) I have thoughts!
Best: Zuko. angsty, teenage boy depression, father issues, determined to a self-destructive degree. The actor is great at capturing all these facets of Zuko's conflicting, complex character. Really great with the choreography/martial arts too. Its not easy to pull off Zuko's mostly shaven but with a ponytail haircut, but this actor manages it. And yes, the opening scene with him seeing the beam of light from the iceberg and saying, "Finally." did give me some chills. Honestly the actor just captures Zuko really well. Great casting.
Worst: Katara. has the personality of an elegant yet unassuming well watered house plant. Its more because of the writing than the actress… she's doing her best with this depressing egg whites version of Katara she's had thrusted upon her. It's not going to be convincing when Toph comes along next season and calls her sugar queen.
Aang: never has any fun. spends every episode staring into the distance being sorrowful and melancholic. *teardrop rolls down cheek* he is a depressed 40 year old in the body of a 12 year old. He has no fun side to him anymore- an important side for a 12 year old kid to have! Also spends the entirety of season one (you know, titled "water"!) and doesn't learn a lick of waterbending, not even from Katara, who spends a lot of it learning from the waterbending scroll!! Why??? However the actor is doing a great job and I think he captures Aang's essence really well. He is young and I think next season he will improve a lot.
Sokka: I almost forgot to write thoughts down for him, which I think says more than anything else. He's essentially been boiled down to the same old overprotective big brother, but now he comes complete with daddy issues. It's a little hilarious that Katara's worst memory is watching her mom get burned alive by a firebender soldier while Sokka's is hearing his dad say he's disappointed with him. Kind of ruins the moment tbh. They really took all the fun aspects of the main Gaang and dulled them down completely, its sad. At least he's cute though- and imo, the chemistry with Suki's actress was there.
The previous avatars: every single one meets Aang just to berate & yell at him and tell him he shouldn't have friends and where has he been for the past 100 years without giving him a second to speak. What?? Sadly it seems any dignity, grace, or wisdom the previous avatars had in the original, has been completely wiped out in this live action. Also, this idea of them telling Aang about things that are going to happen makes no sense. Did no previous avatar tell Roku his friend was going to betray him, let him die on the island, and start a 100 year long war? Also the idea of Aang being able to communicate ONLY if he's in one of their temples is stupid. What is the point of the avatar state, then? Will Roku be able to teach him anything at all?
Princess Yue: yes I wrote an entire paragraph about her lol. She is one of my favorite minor characters. I think they wanted her to look so accurate to her original counterpart that she just looks too much like a cosplayer, with such a stiff and lifeless looking wig. This is the one and only time I will concede I prefer M. Night's version of Yue as far as costuming goes, though both funnily enough forget her eyebrows shouldn't be dark. The actress was fine. But this version of Yue is quite a different person from og Yue, I can't really compare. Plus, it feels like we see her for a good 10 minutes before she dies for the moon spirit. I couldn't buy into her and Sokka having feelings for each other because it felt like they knew each other for a good 2 hours at most. Ideally, I think these two versions kind of fused together would be perfect.
Tumblr media
Azula/Mai/Ty Lee: Grouping them together because. Azula is the most unconvincing out of the characters for me. I don't buy that this girl is supposed to be the princess Azula for a second. I'm neither intrigued nor intimidated, and that's pretty bad as Azula was one of my top favorite characters from the original. The costume is fine, the wig feels cheap, her dialogue is horrendous, the actress can't convince me. Azula isn't smart or cunning, sharp, or collected, and her "working with Zhao" just made her look dumb when the entire plan flopped. She is a whiny, petulant little girl stamping her feet in every other scene. It's not for me. Also, the way her relationship with Ozai is depicted here makes Ozai look like a loser, too. It's like they want us to not be afraid of either of them.
As for Mai and Ty Lee. Ty Lee is fine. She looks okay, the actress is fine for how little we see her. On Mai, the wig is just so bad I don't get what happened. It's like they're struggling on the line of being realistic with the styling, or leaning completely in cartoon-character-came-to-life. I don't think the actress for Mai here was a good choice.
Dialogue: the worst part of this show. When they're not completely quoting word for word from the original, it's.. just bad. Everything is always exposition and thats not good. The few moments that aren't are just... idk.
CGI: not bad. I was expecting worse. Fire, earth, and air all look great. Water feels a little slow, mostly when its just water and not ice but that can be improved I assume. Koh was pretty cool, as was Wan Shi Tong.
Settings: Beautiful!! Omashu looked great. South and North water tribes looked great. Ozai's throne room looked incredible and I was annoyed every time we see it, he is just standing around and not sitting on his throne. It just reminded me how amazing the buildup to Ozai and Azula's reveals were in og season 1.
Costume: Its either a hit or a miss. There's strangley not much in between. Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, Iroh, June, Ozai, Jet, Suki, the Kyoshi warriors, all look pretty great. Then you have characters like Azula, Mai, or Yue, who just look like half decent cosplayers. It kind of takes you out of the moment when it looks like the person is a cartoon character, rather than just a normal person. For example, compare how Katara looks compared to Azula.
Music: of course it was fantastic. A lot of it (I think most) was from the original show, which has one of the greatest soundtracks an animated show has ever had imo.
Final thoughts: Ultimately, it was kind of what I was expecting. You can't condense 20+ episodes worth of development into 8 and expect it all to flow perfectly. However, there are also a lot of changes that really don't make sense to me. I am very curious to know how on earth they will do seasons 2 and 3, as season 1 is the slowest in pace compared to the next two seasons. The original's finale was split into four episodes! Unless they add more episodes for next season, it's going to be a big jumbled mess of lore being shoved into our faces. I am also concerned about Toph. The Gaang so far has been stripped of their fun/unique personality traits. Is Toph going to be the same?

Hi,
Hope you are doing well. Thank you for the response on my question regarding Azula.
I had a query. In the season 3 episode where Sokka and Toph have a conversation regarding Katara's mothering nature, after Sokka says that when he thinks of his mother's face, Katara's face is the one he remembers. I remember Katara's expression as sad. Is this because she realizes that Sokka seems to have moved on from their mother's death or he has compartmentalized it so well, whereas she still has that grief and is unable to get the required closure. I am asking because this conversation might have made her even more sad than earlier regarding her mother.
I would like your thoughts regarding this.
I think we're meant to interpret her sad expression as her feeling guilty about her antagonism towards Toph, and, in extension, Sokka and Aang, for the ways they take her as the "mother" of the group for granted, given that in the next scene it motivates her to apologize to Toph.
I don't necessarily disagree with the message, which is supposed to be that it's okay for Katara to be motherly and that their reliance on her is something they value about her and see as a strength, but the problem is that Katara is the only one who has to learn a lesson about it and Katara is the one who is forced to feel bad for trying to hold on to her lost childhood, and that chafes especially considering how that circles back around in The Southern Raiders. Katara's own feelings, and the fact that she is justified in feeling frustrated that the others don't see her as the child she is, that she never got to be, gets lost because she has to take up that mother role yet again.
It would be one thing if Sokka had told Katara himself about how much he relies on her, but he didn't, and he and Toph agree never to tell her. Of course, this last bit is framed as a joke, but the effect is still that Katara's perspective takes second fiddle, that Katara has to learn to accommodate others and feel guilty for the rare times she gets to be selfish, and she's supposed to understand how much the others rely on her without expecting any thanks from them unless she overhears it accidentally.
All of that %100 feeds into Katara's feelings in TSR, especially how she reacts to Sokka. I think she very well might subconsciously feel resentment at Sokka replacing their mother's face with hers in his mind, especially since, again, this is a secret that she's supposed to understand but never be told, a strength she's supposed to have but never get thanks for or complain about. Katara probably can't ever forget her mother's face, especially on that day, and may even wish she could. I think that's also subtly shown in her emphasis on making Yon Rha remember, something that Zuko also emphasizes because he picks up on it. Katara needs people to remember because she needs to remember, and Sokka needs to forget, to not think about it. Katara wants to talk about it whereas Sokka doesn't. And the fact that this is something Sokka has never shared with her except in an overheard conversation definitely leads to that resentment. What Katara says in TSR to Sokka is harsh, but I think Katara, while coming from a place of pain herself, can be forgiven for concluding that Sokka must not care as much when Sokka actively avoids talking about it with her except to scold her for feeling the way she does about it, and that goes back to those feelings of guilt she carries too, because she cares so much for others and because it's so hard for her to give herself permission to feel selfish, until she just can't hold those feelings back anymore.

‘The Southern Raiders’
I think in a way Azula's mental deterioration is already clearly showing in this episode. Her attack on the air temple is an indication that she's not herself. She's employing aggressive strategy trying to overwhelm the opposition with brute force, and Azula is normally far too subtle for that. Her demeanor has changed as well. Zuko's betrayal and Ozai's displeasure have been magnified by Ty Lee and Mai's betrayal, and Azula knows that Ozai will be angry at her for the Boiling Rock as well. There's a touch of desperation in Azula's tactics here.
I think the fight between Azula and Zuko is much closer not just because of Zuko's magical dragon power-up, but I think Azula is fighting quite wild and uncontrolled here.
Zuko's comments as Azula falls are a bit odd, because he sounds worried when it looks like she's going to fall to her death, but he then sounds bitter when she survives. Toxic siblings, what can you do.
In the Boiling Rock episode I remarked that Katara was a little kinder when teasing Zuko, and also Zuko helped to bring back Hakoda, so... surely Katara should have warmed up more towards Zuko? So what happened here? My explanation is that seeing everyone else cheering at Zuko and celebrating him as a hero, made Katara just feel very irritated - but maybe also a little bit with herself - that she just can't get over this very personal betrayal even if Zuko by now has proven himself. Her words to Zuko - 'I was the first who trusted you' and 'you betrayed me' show how personally she is taking this.
I think @juniperhillpatient did an amazing job dissecting the conversation between Sokka, Zuko, Katara and Aang, and I literally have nothing to add there. I do strongly object to Aang throwing Jet's name around like a pejorative, like I'm sorry, but are we just going to ignore that Jet was making an earnest effort to change his life and make amends when he got KILLED? 30 Jerk Points to Aang. Also, Aang acting all upset and outraged about Katara trying to take Appa anyway... cry some more kid, it's not like everyone else isn't taking Appa whenever they feel like. Sokka was about to take Appa to the Boiling Rock. 30 more Jerk Points to Aang. Also, I feel like nothing about that scene earned Sokka's comment about how wise Aang was being.
Katara is a scary force of nature during this mission. Her entire aesthetic during this stealth mission is putting weird AU Assassin Katara ideas in my mind. She is just frighteningly driven. I think the dark circles under her eyes as she tells Zuko not to worry about her was a great touch. Like or don't like Zutara romantically, Zuko and Katara make for a terrifying team. (of course, I will say Azula and Katara make for an even better one)
Zuko's face when Katara used bloodbending on the Southern Raider commander... it's the look of a man who realizes that he has been is far greater mortar peril than he ever realized. :)
In a way, leaving Yon Rha to his miserable existence is, I think, a fitting enough punishment. It's almost remarkable the Yon Rha didn't croak from fear when facing Katara. Still, even if I'm happy Katara doesn't have Yon Rha's blood on her hands, it's not going to stop me from slapping Yon Rha with a crazy amount of Jerk Points. 400 seems appropriate.
I do love the ending. Aang failed to understand Katara earlier, and he failed to understand her here that not killing Yon Rha didn't mean that Katara forgave him, and... why would she. Anyway, perhaps my favorite Katara episode and one of the best episodes of the entire show.
Lastly, here are the updated Jerk Point standings for Book 3, and I'll see you soon for 'Ember Island Sex Offenders'!
Zuko - 700 Yon Rha - 400 Aang – 340  Ozai - 250 Sokka - 110 Roku - 100 Hide - 80 King Kuei - 60 Toph - 50 Haru - 30

So yeah Nickelodeon finally has access to the original TMNT cartoon. Not sure what the Gaang's taste for pizza would be, but do you imagine any of them, especially Sokka going for the more unusual recipes? Definitely have had and enjoyed Marshmallow and Pepperoni. I'd even be glad to ry hot fudge on Pepperoni.😁
I must admit that the idea of a sweet topping on a pizza scares me. It might be good, but I think I might actually try anchovies before something like marshmallow or chocolate. XD As far as the gAang's favorite toppings go...
Aang: Naturally, he likes vegetarian toppings, but he is willing to try dessert toppings on pizza and some of the tales he tells of Air Nomad pizzas make them sound more like cakes.
Katara: She's not a fan of cheese, but she likes tomato pie and is open to various toppings on that.
Sokka: He always wants a Meat Lovers. If he can't get that, he'll take whatever mix of pepperoni, sausage, ham, meatballs, beef, and bacon he can get. He also enjoys Italian or cheesesteak calzones.
Toph: She's all in on Hawaiian. She does like the taste, but mostly because it's a great way to start fights.
Suki: Her favorites all involves some weird kind of seafood, as is common on Kyoshi Island, but she also likes a nice pesto pizza.
Zuko: He has never had a good pizza in his life, and so he's open to all kinds of crazy toppings to cover the taste of all the bad cheese and tomato sauce he thinks is standard. The weirdest he's ever had is stuffed pretzel-crust pizza with shrimp and soy-sauce-soaked seaweed.
Mai: She eats her pizza with a knife and fork. That's weirder than any topping I could come up with.
Ty Lee: Pizza sits too heavily on her stomach, but she might have a couple of Totinos pizza rolls if everyone is sharing.
Azula: Like Zuko, she's never had a good pizza. Unlike Zuko, she is not seeking to change this, and in fact enjoys telling people that if they had any good taste they'd eat Greek pizza or not at all.
Iroh: Even he'll admit that the herbal tea pizza he tried to make was not a successful experiment.

yeah fuck it, ATLA characters ranked from most to least polyamorous:
Suki. are you going to tell me she and the Kyoshi Warriors don't have the messiest dating history of all time
Sokka. he can't go anywhere without getting hit on. he and Suki have a beautiful bisexual open relationship
Aang. the monks didn't believe in monogamy and neither does he. He doesn't see how "being in love with Katara" negates "flirting with random girls while traveling"
Katara. she reads one feminist text about the institution of marriage being antiquated and she starts flooding wedding venues
Ty Lee. it's hard to tell she's polyamorous because she doesn't try to flirt with you at a continental breakfast buffet but like, unsuccessfully flirt with you, her hand trying and failing to get in her pocket like a Romanian woman seeking sanctuary in an 18th-century French church. but yes she's perfectly capable of dating two women at once or whatever
Toph. technically Toph is too busy with important shit to have much time for romance, but she guesses that "yeah technically I think marriage is stupid or monogamy is stupid idk"
Mai. She doesn't care if Ty Lee sees other people, but she really doesn't feel like putting up with a person in her house who isn't Ty Lee
Zuko. unfortunately Zuko has seen too many sappy romance plays and has the idea of "one true love" baked in his head Rebecca Bunch style. he does learn from Sokka how to date casually but decides it's not really for him and I'm convinced he ends up with a giant nerd and they retire to a house somewhere and read books and pet cats and bake souffles or whatever and his husband makes him very happy
Iroh. I love Iroh but he has some dumbass attachments to tradition and mild-to-moderate sexism and would probably think marriage is the right way of things, which is why he was thrilled when Zuko got married (after Zuko gently explained to him what gay people are) and in his heart he probably judges Sokka and Suki a little bit for their open relationship. we can't all be perfect
Azula. Azula can't even have one functioning relationship do you really think she would have multiple
sorry for not ranking Appa and Momo, I don't know where I would put them. also sorry for making this post at all. as I've mentioned, AtLA has been my latest coping mechanism for depression
