I loveeeee the piastri family too could you write Nicole picking up Oscar + reader from the airport in aussie 😢 just super fluffy and sweet
very short but sweet blurb <33 thank u for requesting i hope you like it
Tumblr media
you’re practically dragging your feet towards the exit of the airport, exhaust a feeling you have long since accepted in your body. the flight from london to melbourne is long, and although you’ve taken it numerous times at this point, it still manages to to thoroughly exhaust you. the fact that it’s the middle of the night doesn’t help either, and you’re pretty sure that if it wasn’t for oscar buying you snacks and carrying half your luggage, you would have given in to the exhaust a long time ago.
but oscar is there. he’s right beside you as you track through the melbourne airport at 3am. it’s your home country. the place you both coincidentally grew up—it’s weird, because you met after you had both moved to london, and finding out he was a fellow aussie was like finding out your love was destined to be.
nicole is picking you up, you’d arranged that ahead of time so you didn’t have to worry about transportation on top of everything else. you had thought that it would be a good idea, but as you spot her—and to your surprise, hattie as well— you realise that it’s more than a good idea. it’s the best idea you’ve had in a very long time.
you want to drop all your things and sprint towards them in a movie worthy reunion, but you stop yourself just in time. prettying should be oscar who greeted them first—they’re his family after all—so you purposely slow down your pace, giving oscar a little head start towards his mother and sister.
nicole smiles as she reaches out for her son, hugging him tightly for a moment before quickly moving on to you. she holds you tightly as well, rubbing your back in a motherly way that softens your entire body. it isn’t til oscar starts complaining that she missed you more than him that she steps back—but not without flicking his ear while teasingly glaring at her oldest child.
hattie greets you next, and she doesn’t even try to hide the fact that she’s there to see you and not your boyfriend. she springs on you, enveloping you in a hug that almost makes you topple over, and you hug her right back with the same intensity.
oscar smiles at you when you break free of the hug, and he smiles even brighter when his sister reaches down to take one of your bags so you have a free arm to interlock with hers.
and when his younger sister starts pulling you along towards the car, oscar’s smile is almost breaking his face.
it’s good to be home.

Some people have been saying this, but I don't think it's been said enough and I'm just going to add my voice to the mix.
Nimona's nomination is being framed as an example of "Look at what Disney missed out on!" and I get it. It's a nice, tasty schadenfreude situation and we all like to see The Mouse get taken down a peg.
But I think we need to be very clear; Disney did not miss out on anything because they were never going to take that sort of risk.
Disney was never going to release anything close to the Nimona we got. It would have been sanded down until anything obviously queer or controversial was as faint and unnoticeable as possible by the casual viewer. And then they would still be too scared of any potential backlash. So they would have given the film a limited release at theatres, with no advertising, or social media or support.
Like what happened with Strange World.
You remember Strange World, right?
No?
That's because no one does.
And I believe that was deliberate, because that way Disney can go "Weeellll... obviously we would LOVEto take more risks and have more inclusive stories but that's clearly not what the public wants!"
Look at the original concepts for Wish. The evil royal couple? The peter-panesque star boy that would have made the gen zers go feral the same way millenials went feral for Jack Frost? These could have been the best things about the movie, and even they were scrapped, and replaced with something more homogenised. And those ideas are nowhere near the level of the concepts and discussions Nimona brought to the table.
Disney can barely have explicit gay people. Nimona has a gay south Asian man in a relationship with an east Asian man. As a protagonist! But more than that, you think Disney could ever come up with a relationship as complicated and difficult as Boldheart and Goldenloin's? They would never have the guts to show one love interest cutting off the other's arm in a straight relationship. Let alone a gay one! And then for them to be on opposite sides of the conflict, shifting between feelings of betrayal, and questioning each other motives? That's some adult dark shit for a kids film.
Asha as a character was forced into the quirky girl role that Disney has already flogged to death with Anna and Rapunzel. You ever think they would allow a Disney princess to be as dark and violent and nuanced as Nimona? You ever picture the titial character of a Disney film AS the third act conflict, rampaging through a city in a self destructive rage? Nimona is anti authoritarian, vengeful, bloodthirsty, a pretty explicit trans allegory, and even, by the climax, openly suicidal. You KNOW that terrified Disney.
I had a thing about the Director here too but I was shocked by how long that got so I'll have to save her for a different post.
My point is the things that make Nimona art, that make Nimona a great story, that make the film important and Oscar worthy, are all things that Disney has become too chicken shit to produce. If Disney had released a film called Nimona it wouldn't have been Nimona. I fully believe that if the film hadn't had been 90% finished it wouldn't have been shelved. It would have been lobotomised and vivisected. Everything special and vital about the movie and its message would have been removed, and no one would have known what could have been. Once again we would have gotten scraps and been thankful for them.
It makes me think about films like Wish (and others we don't know the name of, and never will) and think of what they could have been if studio's like Disney were braver and let their artists make art, instead of content.
tl;dr Disney didn't miss out on Nimona because they are incapable of making Nimona. If they had produced it the real Nimona wouldn't exist. We didn't miss out on Nimona. And that's purely by luck.

A Rosegarden by Any Other Name Would Smell As Sweet
AKA Reasons Why Rosegarden is Canon #015: Ruby and Oscar's Multiple Shared Allusions to Other Fairytale Love Stories
Typical disclaimer that while all characters within the RWBY narrative have a main allusion, they often have secondary allusions that apply to the roles they fill in relation to other characters stories. Like how Yang is Goldilocks on her own, but becomes the Beauty to Blake's Beast when paired together.
The first, most notable example for Rosegarden is, of course, The Little Prince (expanded upon here). Oscar's primary allusion is of a boy who grows up on a planet "scarcely bigger than himself, who was in need of a friend", and one of his most influential relationships is that to a rose with whom he loves. They spend much of the story separated from one another, while the prince wanders lost in a desert, pining for a way to reunite with her back home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Important to note this isn't the only time Ruby has been a Rose for another fairytale. She also slots in as the Rose Red to Weiss' Snow White, she acts as the successor to her mom as The Last Rose of Summer, and she also stands in as the Enchanted Rose to Bumbleby's Beauty and the Beast given how it's a "true loves kiss will break the spell before the last petal falls" situation... and BB kisses two episodes before Ruby Rose "dies".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second notable allusion for Rosegarden is the Warrior in the Woods (expanded upon further here), a canon RWBY fable from The Fairytales of Remnant. The very first story within the book is about a village boy who becomes a huntsman after being inspired by a huntress he meets in the woods. A huntress, I might add he fell in love with the moment he saw her silver eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something to note about both of these examples, is that they are each stories with a focus on caring for someone else in unique ways. With The Little Prince, the Rose is vain and has many demands and asks the prince to tend to her; while in WitW, the warrior works tirelessly without thanks to protect a village. When the boy meets her, he starts looking after her for a change because he figures that's the least he can do to repay her. Both of these tie in well to RG's dynamic of Ruby carrying such heavy responsibilities alone, with Oscar making a conscious and active effort to help her shoulder those burdens.
The third, more subtle allusion, is their respective ties to The Wonderful Land of Oz. Oscar's first confirmed allusion before the Little Prince reveal was originally to Princess Ozma/Tip, the heir to the Kingdom of Oz given his proximity to Ozpin as the man behind the curtain, as well as to fit a "genderbend" character within the framework of team JNPR.
How does Ruby tie into this one? Well, we have to work backwards a bit. Ozpin's initial four lieutenants were all linked to the original cast of Oz:
Qrow as The Scarecrow without a mind (travels around as a crow and is regularly inebriated)
Ironwood as the Tin Man without a heart (his multiple cyborg prosthetics and character development in Atlas)
Lionhart as The Cowardly Lion (his fear overtakes him and pushes him to join forces with Salem to save his own skin)
Theodore as Dorothy Gale (donning ruby gauntlets instead of the traditional red slippers)
But RWBY is a story about legacies and breaking cycles. With the new generation of huntresses in Oz's inner circle, they replace those who came before them.
Blake takes Lionheart's place (cat faunus that ran out of cowardice, only to become brave and return to the fight)
Weiss as the Tin Man (aka Ice Queen, who's heart melted as she became kinder and grew more attached to those around her)
Yang the Scarecrow (no longer blindly following orders, but making an active effort to question the words and intentions of those around her)
Ruby as Dorothy (her little dog Zwei and the red - or silver, depending on movie or book adaptation - slippers that lead them all on their journey)
Why bring up Oscar as Princess Ozma and Ruby as Dorothy? Well, according to the original books and not the movie, "Dorothy and Ozma are each other's closest relationship" as illustrated here:
Tumblr media
Very good friends. Just gals being pals. Sharing the responsibilities of leadership with one another. Smooching in the palace gardens. Dorothy as the only one who's allowed in Princess Ozma's rooms without an invitation. #BFFS4EVA
These are all the canon ones that are easy enough to parse, but there are some similarities to others famous stories that can be found with a bit of squinting that I will also share just for fun.
The first is how Ruby's experience in the Tea Party acts as a near perfect display of Romeo and Juliet's ending. For those unfamiliar with - or who have forgotten - the bard's infamous tragedy, it is a story about two star-crossed lovers very much doomed by the narrative. It ends with Juliet faking her death without telling Romeo. So when her prince charming comes across what he believes to be her corpse, he drinks a vial of poison and kills himself out of grief. When Juliet wakes and sees he has left her, she takes his dagger and stabs herself so they might be together.
In the tea party, Ruby fills the shoes of Romeo and Oscar of dear Juliet. Oscar is "killed" by Ruby's blade, but it is an illusion. He's not real. Like Juliet, he's not really dead. However, the vision is still enough to push Ruby into drink a vial of poison (the tea that takes her to the tree), giving up in the face of her grief, just as Romeo does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if we need any more evidence for this one, can't hurt to bring up the infamous quote of Juliet wherein she likens her love to an oh-so-familiar flower:
What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet;
A line that Juliet says to proclaim that if her Romeo weren't a Montague, then she would still love him regardless, but through which implies that it would be easier for them to be together if he were not himself. And within V9, Ruby's cited motivation to go to the tree is because she doesn't want to be herself any longer.
And last, but certainly not least, is how a lot of ships within RWBY seem to have fairly direct parallels to the myth of Eros and Psyche. It is a classical tale about the trials of love, putting the protagonists under multiple tests of loyalty and attachment before letting the two lovers unite at the end. Both love stories within Beauty and the Beast and Snow White and Rose Red pull inspiration from the myth, and we see it in CRWBY's approach to writing romances throughout the show thus far.
Blake and Yang being separated, breaking and rebuilding trust, before coming together in V9; Ren and Nora going through trials and conflict, currently apart now so they might discover who they are on their own before re-uniting with one another again; and Rosegarden having constant reunions, separations, and trials with strong focuses on their attachment to each other. Another common archetype they use from Eros and Psyche is that of the "Animal as Bridegroom", wherein at least one of the partners undergoing a transformation that is often monstrous in nature.
Bumbleby is self explanatory
WhiteKnight has the issue of Jaune being lost to time and becoming an Old Man, who's curse is reversed by magic. It alludes to his role as the Prince within Snow White and Rose Red who was initially turned into a bear via a curse
Rosegarden, has this instance for both characters. Oscar as an Ozcarnation (becoming something he doesn't want via a curse they are trying to break before time runs out) and Ruby's future fate should she be captured by Salem (being turned into a Grimm by the wicked witch - or eaten by the wolf - like her mother before her).
All of these line up with the myth's structure as well as Monty's foundational philosophy on love stories that we see in his quote from many years ago:
Tumblr media
A lot of these all have really tragic endings so uh. Good thing RWBY likes to subvert the stories it's telling, right? They're going to get a happy ending, right CRWBY???? 😰

In an attempt to exorcise these thoughts from my brain (this movie has taken up residence in my soul), here is an incomplete list of the things I notice and love in Red White and Royal Blue.
1. Henry staring in utter disbelief at the frosting-covered whiskey tumbler Alex plops distractedly into his hand whilst pawing ineffectually at the mess all over Henry's shoulder. Comedy gold.
2. Nora pretending she doesn't know either of them and hiding her face as they scuffle in front the cake.
3. How Alex has Henry literally in his pocket while talking turkey.
4. During Henry's "what does it mean" crisis talk over The Kiss, the entire scene is dressed in bi flag colours. Nora is in pink, Alex in blue, with a purple poster in the background.
5. The soft "whoa" of the white house staffer, who walks into Nora's office just in time to hear her ask Alex: "How many guys have you been with?" She hesitates, stunned, and then looks as if she'd like the ground to open up and swallow her now, thank you very much.
6. His Royal Hardness making flustered small talk with the UK Prime Minister and the US President, while the FSOTUS goes in for a cheeky squeeze. You ridiculous, giddy, fools.
7. Ellen's exasperated "my son thinks he's a fucking comedian" look in reply to Alex's "The night is young, Ma" and his shit eating grin, before diplomatically, and very sensibly, removing the British PM from the vicinity of these two horny idiots.
8. Alex's warm and teasing delivery of "Are they known for their homosexual tendencies?" after Henry says he's "as gay as a maypole." Boy is smitten.
9. When Henry invites Alex to the charity polo match, his initial awkward nerves transition to fond derision when Alex's tells him, crestfallen, that he doesn't know how to play polo. Bless.
10. Henry on a horse. Very much in agreement with Alex on this one.
11. The interleaved editing of the polo match and tack room shenanigans. It reminds me strongly of the interlaced 'what if' scene in Steven Sodenburg's Out of Sight, which is executed at a far slower pace but delivers that same feel of two people being inexorably drawn to each other, almost as if events are fated to happen.
12. The lighting in the Paris cafe scene. God damn those are two beautiful men.
13. Henry's gleefuly bashful admission of innuendo in the Paris cafe. He's just given Alex his full Royal name, but its Henry Fox that's in control here and he's revelling in bringing every moment of his inner fantasies to life.
14. The heartbreaking disconnect between their two perspectives in the Paris walk scene.
That's some bullshit
It's my life
Doesn't mean you have to accept it
Alex has spent his life pushing defiantly against societal expectations. Henry has spent his life weighed down by them, isolated in a way that Alex only barely grasps.
15. I wish, with all my heart, that the fairytale political landscape of this movie was real.
16. The entirety of the morning after scene in the hotel room during the DNC is perfection and Zahra is the MVP. Matthew Lopez said he had no idea he was going to get that mini panic attack from Sarah Shahi and kudos to Sarah for that perfomance. Inspired.
17. How quickly and assertively Alex say "No" to Zarah's "would it make any difference if I told you not to see him again?"
18. The way Zarah says "Everytime I see you, it takes another year off my life." This phrase plays on loop in my brain during shitty work meetings.
19. The coming out scene with Alex and his Mom. A joyous balm for those of us who never got to experience that with our own parents.
20. Forehead touches. Ugh.
21. My brother in Christ, sharpen your knives Oscar, what did that pepper do to deserve that?
22. The catatonic state of sadness that Henry exists in after swimming away from Alex. My heart hurts.
23. The pride flags in the crowd outside Buckingham Palace. Again, can we all have this universe, pretty please?
24. The way Henry takes Alex's hand with such ease in public after the election win. If only Paris Henry could see you now.
[Exorcism sequel here]

Belfast: not your average working-class drama
So, yes: as promised, I watched Belfast last night, until the wee hours of the next morning. And I have to immediately add I do not feel the need for a re-watch. As usually, I shall not insist more than necessary on the storyline and focus instead on the raw impressions I am taking home with me.
It was a strange experience, given all the huffing and puffing and hype and backstage context, inevitably involving C. And I defy any OL fan to watch and process it otherwise: the circus was what it was, at its time, Vanity Fair major PR blunder included. Whether you are a hardcore Balfe Nation stan or a shipper, that bias is there, looming over your screen as you try and get into the magic of it. An ambitious and, at least for me, unfulfilled goal.
The storyline is personal, in a cinematic niche that screams for political statements, peppered with psychological heaviness and guerilla brutality. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw spoke in his chronicle about an 'euphoric eulogy' (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/oct/12/belfast-review-kenneth-branagh-jamie-dornan-judi-dench), where the NYT's Jeannette Catsoulis saw ' grit and glamour stroll hand-in-hand' (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/11/movies/belfast-review.html), with a marked, delighted nod to C's performance as Ma. So yes, we inevitably deal with 'rose-tinted glasses' and 'softened edges', in this nostalgic, elegantly shot coming of age plot. The aesthetic is there, with a black& white sleek filming choice that makes everything so dense at times, you simply have to hit pause and let it sink in. It is, I suspect, Branagh's nod to Truffaut and his Antoine Doinel five movie cycle, starting with Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows, but this is an inept translation of an idiom that means 'to break havoc'), another coming-of-age working class story set in Paris during the Fifties and also shot in black and white. A clever choice that allows the audience to focus on the dialogues, without any other distraction. And ultimately, a statement that also heavily drags you by your coat's button: "hey, there, I am an independent, intellectual movie featuring beautiful people amid hardship: wanna be friends?"
Being totally impervious to the Fifty Shades of Grey charm allowed me to focus on C's performance and I have to immediately say I found it elegant, clever and endearing. And also immediately add that I still have no clue about how the hell she managed to drag all her Claire Fraser mannerisms, all the way from Inverness to Belfast and 1743 to 1969 (another important year for OL, as we all know, and that coincidence made me grin). I loved (loved-loved-loved) the broken plates' scene, but in all fairness, was it that different from the moment she slaps Laoghaire in Castle Leoch's kitchen? But I truly resonated with the tiny moments when we see her really struggling to make sense out of the Inland Revenue string of letters and find a solution to a very clear family conundrum, with the result that we all know, I suppose, by now. So yes, Mrs. Balfe: portraying strong, honest, salt of the Earth women absolutely suits you and I'd love to see more of it in the future, if only perhaps with a different, more realistic angle.
So the real question I bet you're all waiting for me to answer is this: was it an Oscar-worthy performance? Sadly, my answer is no (no matter how deep I would like it to be otherwise - and I swear I did and I do). And it's #silly and very unfair to her, I know, since it has to deal, in my humble opinion with the script's own limitations and the complete failure to find a balance between the child's gaze and the mother's presence. As the script and storyline go, Belfast is Jude Hill's movie and it is to him I would have given the Oscar. Not Judi Dench, whom I love dearly and whose voice is the most beautiful, rich, intelligent movie voice ever to have graced this Earth. She didn't need just another trinket of Hollywood affection for what is a correct, but over all forgettable performance, unlike Ciaran Hinds'. Who was simply extraordinary and that's all I can say: I am in love, and when I fall in love, I shut up - not babble on blogs.
Would I recommend it? I don't know. I mean, it's Branagh, and to be honest, I don't hold the man in great esteem. I think his reputation as the neo-Laurence Olivier is way OTT and I am also deeply amused by his pretense to be an intellectual luminary among the glitterati, when he obviously is not. But, as always, this is just me and my very clear-cut opinions. You don't have to follow them or even believe me and as always, it's just better to go see for yourself. With this caveat: don't expect too much out of it and you should probably be fine and satisfied.
I sure was very pleased to watch this nugget, my favorite scene in all the movie, to be honest. It's got perfect sarcasm and all the poetry one can find looking at Cartier-Bresson's delicate photographs of schoolchildren waiting for the lesson to end and life to truly start anew:

okay I’m so curious about the short fic you posted yesterday
can I ask how in this universe nina dies? And does eddie too?
(it’s mask of anubis on main btw)
ooh fun questions!! i was hoping someone would ask cuz i couldn't figure out how to work it in. also i added way too much info that you didnt ask for so now it's under the cut :D
first of all, this au is a much darker take on how i think nina's life "actually" played out – I think she'll always have random spirits coming up to her etc, but in this au, it's pretty constant and can get very dangerous very quickly. on the flip side, she sees a lot more fame for her "irl" work than she does "in canon" (see below).
somewhat ironically (given how guarded nina becomes from the constant barrage of gods forcing her to do things), she makes her living off of writing movies about her experiences. i think she does this in canon too, but here she really throws herself into it, almost like a form of therapy since there isn't really any professional she can process things with, you know? she eats, sleeps, breathes her craft – whenever she has downtime, she's writing, editing, networking to get her words out there. she's so fast and so talented with it that she graduates university in three years with honors, by which time the chosen one (season 1) has already been picked up by a major company and has started filming; she wins her first oscar two years later, and the next two each year after that.
(actually, all four scripts got picked up at the same time, which is why the turnaround was so quick – but they didn't announce the sequels until after the oscars because at that point she was a relatively unknown person)
(also i know this isn't how these things work irl but just work with me here. maybe she called in a favor from a random god and had things sped along idk)
anyway, the point im trying to make is that she spends her whole life balancing what she wants to do (her work) with what she has to do (paragon shit) and has a weird sense of self-worth as a result (she knows she's good at what she does, but wants to hide it from the world at the same time (out of fear). she hates that she needs others to keep her safe and refuses to believe they're doing it out of kindness, even though she also knows that they genuinely love her. it's weird) (also she and fabian make up sometime during their uni years so all is good there)
anyway, they (amber + KT) set up a rota of all ex-sibuna members (+ willow as she learns about it pretty quickly post-grad) to spend time in the states for a couple months out of the year each. this essentially made sure there was always 1 other person on the mission with her and 2 people nearby who knew where they were going, should things go wrong and they need rescuing or something. but for small/random tasks, nina would just do those alone.
her last mission (that fabian alludes to) had taken months to complete: three formerly-benign ghosts had been "turned" by a magician up in canada, released from the underworld, and, driven mad by the magic (and confusion of being back in the real world), had started a series of freak thunderstorms across the american midwest. together with jerome, she had to figure out how they got released, stop the magician, construct the device necessary to trap the spirits and send them back, and use said device to stop the storms. the effort had completely exhausted her (so much so that she – making headlines – decided to take a step back on touchstone production, instead of hanging out on set like she did for the other three)
(that's why tor is the way it is. with her dropping off of the face of the earth, someone decided – while she couldn't argue against it – to absolutely slash the budget, which lead to a mess of a story (screenplay is the only oscar it wins)
nina's death (as alluded to in the article) really seemed out-of-the-blue. basically, she was on a mission – alone – that suddenly and very unexpectedly turned dangerous. but when she was found (by KT and amber together) it looked like she just collapsed at home – there was no indication of any foul play or anything, really, of how she died.
also alluded to in the article, but a lot (but not all) of KT's "investigative journaling" was her covering up the consequences of nina's missions with theories that would make sense to the general public. nina's last request of her was to halt any investigation into her death prematurely as she knew things would unravel pretty quickly otherwise
joy's role in nina's life was mainly to book her for enough public-facing events/etc so that people wouldn't question where she was when she "disappeared" for a month or two, as well as act as her social media manager/"source close to her" to tabloids during extended absences so people continue to think she's okay. this was especially important given nina's monumental rise to fame (and as a screenplay writer, at that! usually it's the actors/directors who get most of it!) and her relatively young age, which meant she got herself a fandom very quickly…and we all know what the rumor-spreading capabilities of stan twitter are like. there were quite a few times nina came back from a mission to find several "new" pics on her instagram or that shes going viral for something she doesn't "remember" saying lskdjf
amber's role was to media-train the hell out of nina so she never gives any indication that a) there's an element of truth in her work; b) she lives a double life; and c) weird things keep happening in the cities she happens to frequent (eg random buildings falling, artifacts disappearing, etc). we all know this girl can't lie to save her life…amber is nothing but a miracle-worker in that regard lol
as for eddie – his death is basically the reason things are so awful, now. he actually dies at the end of tor, and not only does osiris himself blame nina for it (using "logic" that can rival senkhara's in s2), but it also leaves nina terrified since she no longer has a protector – something all the other gods/spirits quickly take advantage of (threats/blackmail/etc) for the first few years, by which time word of her willingness to do anything spreads and she can't get rid of the constant requests. it doesn't help that his death also proved to them that nina (like her counterpart) can, and will, sacrifice herself to save the world, if it came down to it, making her the perfect pawn in a lot of schemes.

how long does it take for lando and y&n to become oscar/lando/y/n ?? i feel like maybe y/n starts to feel a little guilty when she wants oscar to beg her to stay not lance, and when she wants to just cuddle and watch a movie with him, not even necessarily fuck and she like cries to lando abt it and lando is like “i love him too princess don’t feel bad” and they maybe approach osc about becoming a more permanent part of their relationship? or not but this is just my interpretation of their relationship feel free to ignore !! p.s love this au so much thank you 🙏
no bc . her crying to lando ab it 😭 i will never ignore anything ab this au
lando notices her mood shifting a little each time she’s coming back from oscar’s. it’s barely noticeable at first, but then halfway through the season she’s crawling into his arms with tears in her eyes. he wants to kill oscar until she tells him how she feels about his teammate, that she feels bad for wanting more when she knows she’s already getting so much more than she should ask for, that every time lance is bribing her with gifts and promises of early morning love making, she’s wishing oscar would just once fight for her to stay in his arms. he relaxes hearing all of it, that out of all the drivers begging her to spend the night, oscar’s the only one let’s say respectful enough to not try and break the rules of the agreement. even alex gets his makeshift dates with her over room service in lando’s hotel room. but oscar never pushes for more, only takes what he’s given. she wants him to push for more, she tells lando through hiccups. lando gets it completely, tells her how when oscar retreats into his shell after a night of fun and dips out of the room without even saying anything, it makes his heart ache. max has always slept over. charles cooks for them, played her piano once when there was one handy. carlos serenades her while he washes her hair. and oscar leaves.
oscar doesn’t know it hurts them as much as it hurts him, but he has to leave because having them as much as he already does makes his heart ache. if he let himself have anymore he’d be into deep and it would only hurt more when they eventually tire of their game and kick him out. he doesn’t find out until lando comes to him after she’s cried herself to sleep after he left their room once again. lando slips out of her arms and goes down the hall to his teammates room. oscar’s convinced he did something wrong when he sees the pained look on lando’s face, but then he’s just asking him to come back to their room and though it feels foreign, it doesn’t feel like anything is wrong. when lando returns with oscar, she’s sitting up in the bed, clearly not sleeping deeply like he thought when he slipped out and oscar’s shaken by the sight of her tear streaked cheeks. he doesn’t know what he’s apologizing for as he lets lando lead him back into bed, but he apologizes anyways as he wraps her in his arms. she curls into him and her tears threaten to spill again as she whimpers, “please stop leaving, i-i can’t stand it when you leave.” his heart stutters in his chest and he looks to lando who’s crawling onto the bed and wrapping his arms around her too, and his teammate just nods in silent agreement, too overwhelmed and tired to try figuring out what any of it meant.
oscar wouldn’t want to talk about it, to make it real, because as soon as they’re something, it means he has something to lose. but he forces himself to open up about his fear of losing them and when he finds out they feel exactly the same way, he isn’t so scared bc it’s very clear none of them are satisfied with just fooling around, and none of them want to lose each other. she turns the almost sad, anxiety inducing conversation on it’s head when she craws into oscar’s lap and asks him to be her boyfriend and even though no one else knows(yet), and even though he knows other drivers will still be fucking her (for now, if his possessive side has anything to say about it), he’s not just another driver anymore.

the american actress pt 2 | pt 1 ☆ shuri x fem!reader
after seeing how stressed you’ve been and how it’s impacting your relationship with the princess, shuri holds herself to a promise she had made early on in your relationship.
warnings : this is like full on smut so expect strap ons, kissing, and overall mentions of sex lol
word count : 3k+
note : i got some requests to do part two of the american actress so here it is ! i wrote this all in one setting and i’m not the best at writing smut but i hope it’s a good enough predecessor. i set it up for there to be a potential part 3 so we will see what happens !! ^_−☆
Tumblr media
it had been almost a whole year after attending the gala held in wakanda. in those many months so much of your life had changed. shuri and you had been essentially “courting” as her country would call it, considering she is royalty. the press found out shortly after, and then the whole world knew. you two quickly became perhaps an even bigger power couple than tony stark and pepper.
however, some people did not approve of the relationship you had with shuri. these people ranged from those in wakandan tribes to silly twitter stans that had a lot to say online. you had heard your fair share of remarks from both sides of the coin, however shuri was always there to comfort you about it.
“they are just jealous, my love.” she would whisper to you as she held you in her arms. she loves when you curl into her lap and just let her hold you. it is when she feels most at home no matter where she was. you had become her home and she had quickly become yours.
you worried so often about getting wakanda to fully approve of your relationship with her. mainly it was just trying to convince the council to love you, but the nation’s thoughts mattered as well. after all, you’d be considered a princess of the nation after marriage. it was far too soon to think of marriage, but due to you dating the princess of the richest place in the world it was a thought you often kept in mind.
if dealing with the worlds approval of your relationship wasn’t enough, you had also gotten booked for a major motion picture movie deal. it was centered around your character in a dystopian world she is aiming to destroy from the inside out. it was really just another action movie, which you didn’t enjoy because you had just started exploring other genres. however, what pushed you towards the deal was the talk of an oscar. they were just rumors, but apparently you could have a great shot at winning one with this movie. it’s an absolute dream of yours to win one. it’s better if it happens sooner than later. after all, if you did end up marrying shuri one day would you be forced to quit acting? you didn’t enjoy thinking about giving up your career, but you were sure that shuri is worth it. you wanted to discuss the topic with her sometimes, but something about it would make you too scared to bring it up. it was early into the relationship still and you didn’t want to overwhelm her or scare her away.
little did you know, she could tell you had done much overthinking over the last couple months. you two had been apart for a while due to your filming in another country. she drowned herself in lab work to distract from thinking about you. before you left she had given you your very own kimoyo beads so that calling could be better and faster no matter where you were. however, you barely used them. she would attempt to reach you through them but you were always too busy or tired. when you did answer she could hear how tired and stressed you sounded. she felt awful keeping you on the phone in that state, so the calls were never long. shuri, instead of becoming frustrated with the situation of the relationship, began working on a way to help you destress if your schedule allowed it. she had remembered mentioning this to you before, but surely you didn’t remember the sleazy comment.
your movie was being put on pause for a few weeks due to your costar spraining their ankle from a silly stunt. you had told them countless times to just have the stunt double do it, but they were too headstrong. despite feeling awful about the whole situation, you were glad to be spending some time recuperating and seeing shuri again. your girlfriend had been excited to know she was going to be able to see you within a few hours. you had been confused by this news, as you assumed you’d probably fly back to your apartment in nyc for a few days and then go see her. however, she had apparently heard of the accident on set and how it was delaying the progress for a few weeks. she gave very clear instructions over the phone:
wear the outfit that was coincidentally placed on your bed in the hotel you were staying in.
grab an overnight bag, that really needed to be made for many nights.
head to the limo that’s waiting downstairs for you.
you followed her instructions with no pushback despite wanting your beauty sleep before seeing her, you too had been excited to see her. you felt like you had been neglecting her lately which hurt your heart. she insisted she understood the situation and that she may have moments of her own like this someday in your relationship. it didn’t make you feel much better to hear those things though.
the box on the bed contained a sheer black lingerie dress made of only the finest materials. a matching black set of lace lingerie was underneath it which only made you snicker. of course she picked out something so scandalous as this. you hid the sexy attire underneath a large hoodie and shorts as you made your way to the limo.
the limo of course drove you to a location where a jet was waiting. a member of the dora milaje greeted you as you approached the jet by saying, “hello, princess.” a wink following after.
it caught you by surprise to hear yourself be called that. some of the people in wakanda would do it whenever they saw you due the fact you and shuri were dating. when you told shuri of this she only laughed and said, “they are only messing with you.” you would scrunch your nose in response to her teasing.
you made your way onto the jet and the woman warrior followed after you. it took off with ease and you allowed your eyes to shut for the remainder of the time. the distance would be traveled fast, but any bit of sleep you could gain was definitely worth it.
Tumblr media
“y/n, we have arrived in wakanda.”
the voice of the woman makes you suddenly open your eyes as if you were on full alert. she gives you a soft smile before helping you stand from the comfy seat you were sitting on.
“thank you.” you say to her, in which she nods.
one nice thing about wakanda is that you never need to worry about taking your bag to your room. the people around you were always ready to take your bag for you and place it in shuri’s room or elsewhere so that you could easily go and see her right away. that's exactly what they had done with your overnight bag you brought. the only thing you had to do was find the princess, which you were informed was in her room waiting for your arrival.
two members of the dora milaje accompanied you through the beautiful halls towards shuris room. you never quite got over just how beautiful wakanda was despite your many visits. every time you came, shuri would show you something new about the nation or the palace. you loved the little moments when she would make fun of the architecture or say how she could make something better or more advanced with her tech. she never fully exited out of her mad scientist role, even while with you.
the dora milaje stopped in front of the ever so familiar door. you smiled at them before pressing the doors open. you didn’t bother knocking on your lover’s door considering you were told she had been expecting you.
when you entered the doors shut behind you. your eyes wandered around the room to see scattered flowers among white sheets and open windows displaying the beautiful stars and city of wakanda. you thought everything was so beautiful and well set up. it warmed your heart to see how much effort she had put into all of this for you. you felt like you should’ve been doing this for her though, seeing as though you feel as if you had neglected her. however, shuri had often liked spoiling you, so you let her.
you noticed that the only thing missing from the room was shuri. you wondered where she could’ve possibly been until a voice answered your thought for you.
“hello ms. y/n. shuri will be joining you shortly.”
it had been griot, an ai that took you months to stop being scared of it whenever he randomly spoke. you see, shuri liked taking you in very public spaces. you had a fear of being caught. and somehow every time you were allowing her to be handsy in those situations, griot would speak out of nowhere and scare you half to death.
“hello griot, i appreciate the heads up.”
“my pleasure.”
you took off the hoodie and shorts, leaving yourself only in the lingerie she had given to you. you assumed it would be a nice little present for her considering she had put all this together. when you sat yourself onto the bed wearing the exposing lace, your eyes landed on something.
it had looked like a camera in front of the bed, but not directly in front. it hadn’t looked like a normal camera either, more like a high tech one. you assumed shuri had designed it. it had her qualities written all over it.
“do you like? it’s my own personal design.”
her voice tears your eyes away from the device and onto her. she entered through her side bedroom door wearing just a tank top and sweats. her hair had been freshly faded, leaving her perfect pile of curls resting atop her head. you felt far more exposed than her, but the tank top made you throb the same way the lingerie made her throb. she found out from one of the first times you got intimate with her that tank tops were a thing you loved seeing her in.
“you look good.” you say to her after watching her move around to the device.
“and you look even better.”
“hmm…” you groan as you let yourself fall back completely onto the bed, “i don’t feel better.”
she chuckles, “don’t worry, i’ll make you feel better.”
you can’t help but blush at her words and the deep tone she uses. your body even tingles a little. you didn’t realize how badly you missed her kissing and touching you until she was standing right in front of you. you just wished she would stop messing around with that stupid piece of tech.
“won’t you just come here already? i’ve missed you.”
“be patient. i’m attempting to set up this camera.”
oh, so it is a camera.
“oh?” you couldn’t help but vocalize your thoughts.
“ah there we go.” she said as you hear a little beep coming from the device. her footsteps can be heard making their way towards you.
“come here.” she says before picking you up and setting you down in her lap. you wrap your legs around her torso and blush. it always made you flustered whenever she’d show off how strong she truly was.
her dark brown eyes stared into your own. the contact from her fingertips on your skin was driving you crazy, but you tried not to show it too much.
“you know how i said i wanted to make a movie with you?” she asked, causing your eyes to widen. of course you know how she said that. it was one of the very first things she said to you. you had assumed she was only joking though, as it never actually happened.
“you’re going to record us?” you asked so innocently that it made her chuckle.
“should i have made it more obvious? i want to keep a video of this for when i miss you. your filming makes it so hard for me to fuck you. so now when you go back, i can just watch this and feel content for the time being.”
those words flowed so easily off of her tongue that it had caught you by surprise. she was incredibly nonchalant about this whole thing which made you think she had been planning this for a while. you were not camera shy in the slightest, but you had never exactly recorded yourself in any position like this before. not that you were opposed, just a little timid.
“just say action then.” you say to her, a smile spreading across your face.
“action.” she replies in a challenging tone.
soon your lips were colliding into hers. her fingers dug into your brown skin and you couldn’t help but exhale due to how good it felt. she had never handled you like this before. shuri was being gentle yet also harsh at the same time. you could tell how much she missed you by how hard she held onto you and how gentle she kissed you. you only hoped that your kisses and hands reaching out for her face relayed the same message.
kissing was enough for shuri until it wasn’t. she eagerly began tugging at the straps on the sheer cloth you wore on top of your lingerie. her mouth went to her favorite spot, your neck. after that first night she craved sucking on your soft spots and kissing in other spots until they were purple. she enjoyed the sounds you were making as her lips touched your skin.
your fingers gripped her hair as she sucked so eagerly on your neck. the vanilla and coconut smell radiating off of her was so pleasant and mouthwatering. she smelled so perfect even with smells as simple as those.
your hips had begun grinding into her, searching for some sort of release. you hadn’t even noticed you were doing the action until she stopped kissing on your neck. the thing about shuri is that she never full stops unless she intends on torturing you. she always eases out of things. she swears its because she never wants the moment to end. you swear it's because she just loves to leave you wanting more by easing off little by little. sometimes it’s more torture than fully stopping it. so before stopping her kisses, she eased off by peppering them.
“you are so eager tonight. i did not know you missed me this much.” she said while slowly taking you out of the lingerie you had taken so long to put on. you didn’t have it in you to detest her taking it all off of you. not that you would’ve detested anyway, but maybe been a tease just a little while longer.
“i missed you more than words can describe, shuri.” you breathe out as she begins palming your now exposed breasts. this pleasure usually wasn’t enough to overwhelm you but you felt so sensitive. had you two not been in the early stages of sex then you probably would’ve just asked to cuddle as you perhaps wept. although both things have you being vulnerable, the sex just seemed so much better. this was because she wouldn’t know exactly what you had been so stressed over.
“i’m sure i missed you even more, my love. i day dreamt of touching you like this again.” she begins to kiss your chest, “i grew so bored and lonely without you here. we haven’t been together for very long in the grand scheme of things but i am sure i love you.” her kisses begin traveling lower. “i am sure i love you more than anything and it makes me sad to see you so stressed and tired.”
you loved when shuri talked to you like this. she made you feel like the only person in the world, and she has been since you first met. this was not the first time she told you she loved you. in fact she had told you many times before this. the first time being out of nowhere in her lab. she had said it so casually.
“i think i love you.”
“you think?” you had asked.
“hm... no, i definitely know i love you.”
you couldn’t stop smiling for a week straight after that interaction. it was so simple but it was the perfect way for her to say she loves you. you didn’t want all that extravagant stuff, after all she was most extravagant for you on dates and intimate nights already. it felt so much more genuine that it came out of nowhere.
“shuri please…” you moaned out after she had been kissing on your now erect nipple. her lips plopped off of it and she looked back up to you with puppy dog eyes. you could feel yourself melting.
“please what?”
“please… please just make love to me. i want you so bad.”
you didn’t have to tell her twice. this was all about making you feel better and more relaxed. she was willing to do anything for you under any circumstance. while you were worrying about what would happen if you two were to get married, she worried that you wouldn’t want to marry her at all. shuri didn’t know how she would bear it if she lost you. it would be especially worse considering she would be forced to see your face everywhere on social media and posters for your movies.
“of course my darling.”
she flipped you over onto your back with ease. it wasn’t too harsh though, as she was scared she may hurt you. you laid there on the bed feeling yourself up to release some tension as she walked to the side of the bed.
“come here.” she commanded, causing you to turn your body to be positioned in front of her. you’re assuming this was the position she wanted you in as she climbed onto the bed. it would look the best on video. her getting a clear shot of how she stroked you so elegantly with the strap on she had been hiding underneath her sweatpants. it didn’t hit you until now why it was so nice to grind against her.
she lifted your legs up and got the perfect view of just how perfect and vulnerable you truly were. your entrance was begging for her to make her way in but she couldn't grant it that pleasure yet. shuri wanted to look at you a little while longer. she wanted to take in how beautiful you looked in your purest form. she admired your stretch marks and the way your stomach formed a crease or two while having your legs bent back. if she had the chance to, she would keep you constantly by her side forever, just so she could look at you for hours. she admired your birthmark and your little moles that adorned the most private places on your skin. she loved how your skin sparkled in the night stars due to the cocoa butter lotion you religiously lathered yourself in.
you were like a forbidden fruit that she craved more of with each passing day. she was sure you were created by bast herself despite you not being of wakandan origin. that didn’t matter to shuri though. she was sure bast put you here just so that she could know what true love and adoration felt like. even while you were going through a little rocky situation with your relationship, her feelings never faltered. you were both sure you could get through anything and that moments like these were to help with that.
she slowly pushed herself into you which caused you to moan. they were slow and steady strokes. shuri did not want to overload you with anything too fast. she wanted to show you with every movement how lucky she was to have you and love on you.
“faster... just a little bit faster, please.” you managed to get out between your soft moaning. of course shuri obliged and began thrusting faster while digging her fingernails deep into your thighs.
the extra pinch from her fingernails was beginning to push you over the edge. she cooed to you calling you her beautiful angel or sweet girl as you whimpered and cried out for her to go faster or slower. at one point you had switched positions into one where you were in her lap being pushed up and down her strap. you didn’t need to be guided for long though as you began making your own movements as she continued grabbing onto your hips. your head was nestled deep within her neck as you struggled to keep your breathing evened.
then finally her stroked began getting deeper and deeper. this was what really sent you over the edge. she was hitting every thrust like she was following the beat of a song. you could feel yourself be lifted up from her lap a little every time she did it. something about this intimate act could not compared to the others you two have shared. you asked her to make love to you and thats exactly what she was doing. before you two had just been fucking, simply having sex. this was so much more emotional and powerful and truly you felt like it couldn’t get any better than this.
“i’m c-coming!” you managed to get out of your lips as shuri thrusted faster and faster. your moaning and breathing became utterly uncontrollable as you let yourself melt in her touch. she could feel herself coming up on her release too from the strap’s material rubbing against her and your beautiful moans. at some point you forgot the camera was even rolling, too in tune with every thrust and grunt shuri had been making as she did it.
you soon came undone beneath her with a final moan and gasp for air. you kept your head nestled in her neck as your back arched and she continued to thrust, although slowing down. she had finished shortly after you with her slower strokes. those had always finished her off like clockwork which you found amusing. however, you much too tired to even giggle at the action. you could still feel the strap inside of you as you remained in her lap.
“my love, i have to get this out of you.” she whispered to you.
“must you? It feels so nice. i could fall asleep just like this.” you whispered back, your voice laced with exhaustion.
she laughed, “i’m sure you could, considering you already are. however, i can not have the ladies come in and see us like this. it would be improper of me.”
you sighed, “i suppose so.”
she helped you get off by slowly taking it out of you and setting you on the side of the bed that you always slept on. you could hear her shuffling around in the background as your eyes refused to stay open. her bed had been so soft and was covered in only the finest sheets made of satin and most likely vibranium.
“here.” she whispered out to you. suddenly you felt a warm towel wiping the inside of your legs and flower. you always loved that she took care of you after. shuri placed a kiss on your forehead before saying, “i love you y/n. rest well for me.”
she didn’t have to tell you twice. as soon as the covers were pulled over you the warmth flowed through your body and put you right to sleep. shuri climbed into bed shortly after you going to sleep, placing another kiss on your forehead before falling into a slumber of her own.

So is Yang just not allowed to have a life ?
Tumblr media
🐝
I don't know about all of you but lately ever since the end of volume 9 all I've been seeing is people talk about how young is a bad sister but I think people fail to realize that Yang has given up basically her whole childhood ,teenage ,and early adult years cuz she's around 19 through 21 now I believe and she's looked after Ruby
And I see people like to use examples about how when they got to beacon how young wanted to Branch out and maybe be on a team that wasn't with Ruby ,yang has the right to Branch out she's her own person she doesn't have to be attached to the hip at Ruby and yes I know there are a large amount of moments we've seen Ruby display
Tumblr media
depression and sadness that no one else besides a few people have noticed like Maria and Oscar maybe even penny but it's not Yang's job to fully look after Ruby 24/7 Ruby is not her child
🟢
Yang gave up almost all of her life up till now watching over Ruby when her dad even though he was there physically mentally he was not there and he had started school teaching her mom (summer rose )who was raising both Yang and Ruby was gone
Tumblr media
And from what it seems Ruby hasn't had any other female figures in her life she's run attached to outside of Yang besides maybe Maria I could guess since she was teaching her how to use her silver eyes Yang has always been in Ruby's life she hasn't really had a chance to live her own life I think people are forgetting that and people are upset saying Yang is so focused on Blake and dating Blake and
Tumblr media
thinking about it we don't know if yangs ever really dated before she is a very flirtatious character but have we ever seen her date has she ever dated anyone before I believe one of the writers even said that it was Yang was so worried about her feelings for Blake because she wasn't sure about her
Tumblr media
sexuality at the time because she hadn't got the chance to explore it and if you think about it when would she have time taking care of Ruby all the years and going to school herself trying to get into combat school and then into beacon and then everything happened with them getting on a team and even though Yang did want to Branch out I think she was happy to be on a team with her sister so that way she could look out for her since she was so young and the only time Yang has been
Tumblr media
really apart from Ruby was after the fall of beacon and after the fall of beacon all of the girls on the team went their separate ways whether they wanted to or not so they could grow more individually which was good for them you ain't got to be on her own for once and with her dad actually being there as a parent for her for once actually
🟠
helped her grow mentally and physically past the loss of her arms her school that had become a second home to her and Blake who at the time I don't think she fully knew she had developed feelings for and her sister and a person who was becoming her best friend weiss
Tumblr media
Yang isn't even my favorite character and I'm sitting here upset for her because all I see is people say that Yang is a bad sister ,I'm sure Yang has noticed that times that Ruby has been upset we even saw Yang try to reach out to
🟣
Ruby several times in volume 9 but she always got cut off by something happening and if it wasn't for that Yang would have probably reached out to Ruby sooner yes Yang and Blake had their big moment in volume 9 that everybody including the fans have
🟠
been waiting for for years especially after being heavily hinted at and volume 7 after everything Blake and yang it went through in the prior volume and volume six they deserve to have a moment of happiness and just relax and even though everything is going crazy around them Yang
🟡
deserves to have a moment where she can go this is going to be a part of my life and I want this to be a part of my future young is thinking about her future which is the opposite of Ruby who as we could see from Rqby volumes 7 - 9 and even in the Rwby crossover movie even if it isn't Canon
Tumblr media
Ruby isn't really thinking about her future she just wants to defeat Salem and that's it I don't know what she thinks her future will be like after that Ruby is still depressed sad and broken just because she came back from ascending in the ever after doesn't mean she's completely fixed she still needs to find a purpose for herself that's what happens to the afterens who lived in the ever after even when
🔵
they come back they have to come back with a new purpose Ruby came back feeling that she was enough but she still confused about her life it's not Yang's job to help her figure that out Ruby is her own person like how Ruby has told Oscar and
🟢
Penny they're their own people she is her own person and she's going to figure her life out Yang doesn't have to babysit her why do people think that Yang is an awful sister when Yang has done nothing but love Ruby more than anybody probably even their own father and keep saying she's a bad sister hell yangs are better sister than most sisters I've seen even winter and weiss
🟣
It wasn't till volume eight that they both finally reconnected with their family but Yang has always been here for Ruby even though Yang is in a relationship and has finally gotten her feelings out maybe now that Yang has gotten her feelings out
🔵
she can help Ruby maybe discover her feelings for herself and other people more cuz Ruby is always seems like she's been alone and confused about her feelings Yang can help her with that but it doesn't have to consume her life 24/7
😐
I swear they only reason people are complaining about Yang now along with other things I've seen people doing lately is that we haven't had content and people are bored and they're just looking for anything to nitpick and complain about

Disney's Wish: A Simple Meal Well Made.
As somebody who enjoys all sorts of animation that hits that sweet spot for me, I agree with the general consensus of fellow cartoon fans that animation is NOT just for kids nor should it only enjoyable to kids.
I also agree that while some are made with kids in mind, that doesn't mean that they are bereft of thought put into them. Avatar might be overdone as the go-to example but that it is does speak to its quality and all those it had inspired.
Even so, even wacky comedies like Billy & Mandy have a lot of thought put into them in terms of what the creators think will bust a gut. They don't just settle for wacky comedies because it's what the kids want but more what they wanna show. Even if some are strongarmed into being more comical, most will at least roll up their sleeves and have bit of fun.
However, I feel like this need to highlight animation's appeal across generations can often have a lot of fans put pressure on certain projects from certain studios of significant recognition. That is to say, there's little room to be just "mid" as the kids call it.
Like... we all know the Oscars are bull, right? Like many even admit as much. However, this dismissal of animation each year gets to use largely because there are those who by their hype. We feel our medium has a lot to prove so each movie has to be go big or go home.
Especially after big name companies put out projects that go GIANT between Spider-Verse and The Last Wish.
Of course, as it pertains to Wish, many would consider Disney not going big was unbefitting of their centenary film. I'm not here to advocate for expecting less or that one can't feel more meat could've been added to what they feel is a bit bare bones. I mean, 100 years of movie making is nothing to sneeze at.
But baring that and all else I've discussed above, it can be REALLY easy to fall into the pit trap of seeing Wish far less for what it is and a lot more for what it isn't.
For me?
I found the pacing fairly brisk from start to finish with the songs rarely ever feeling like non sequiturs. Rarely did any moment truly drag out with or was there just because of marketing or comic relief.
I love how we had less of a mystery around King Magnifico being a very selfish behind the scene from Act 1 and only getting worse when he perceives a threat to his power. It very much reads like a fantastical take on Walt Disney's rise in power and shadiness behind the charming facade.
While the heroine was archetypical, I found Asha's story and her friends getting swept up in facing the king more true to life than you think. Especially when viewed through the lens of being analogous to Disney:
King Magnifico as this benevolent ruler who harbors many wishes he promised he might grant. Many of which either come down to how they may not serve him or even threaten him like Saba's. That is, anything new or off-beat that could undermine what he's accomplished or feels entitled to.
Asha being this castle worker who tries to get the position of working with the big man himself and does... only to learn his shady side. Much like how Disney fans find any position in the company to not be the dream job they thought it'd be before learning how deep the rabbit hole goes.
Asha finds another source of magic that grants wishes and unintentionally threatens Magnifico. Given the indie animation boom, it's hard to not see this as creators taking IPs into their own hands without the backing of big megacorps.
Magnifico delves into dark magic that depreive him more and more of whatever scruples he had left in order to quash this rebellion. I think we've seen too many examples of bigger companies trying to outdo the little guys via unethical means of increasing production for money.
The King utilizes the wishes to get more power. Gee, where have I heard the creation of others being stolen/locked away for personal greed? Know anything, Davey-boy?
Asha rounds up her friend to expose the truth. Many of them organize a way to stop this injustice while the King buy out one of their own to try and undermine them. Hmmmm. Anybody hear of any strikes that went on recently?
The climax involves the king's people collectively embracing their inner stars to stand up to the tyrant he's become. Again, strikes?
Hell, I can't help but feel like the Easter Eggs were as lowkey as they could if only so these elements could be highlighted. Surprising considering how nostalgia baiting has been en vogue lately.
But that's a grand chunk of my disorganized thoughts on a movie that I feel many will get worked up now but look back on with a touch more of appreciation. It's hardly the best movie ever and maybe a "Go Giant" ambitious film would have been a crowd pleaser.
But the movie is what it is. And I like it for what it is.

My Favorite New-To-Me Movies of 2023
Women Talking
This movie won the Oscar of Best Adapted Screenplay and deservedly so...it's scenes are so tightly written and delivered so beautifully by the incredible cast of actresses, that it held my attention for the entire runtime. Every performance was fantastic, and I wish at least one of them had received recognition from the Academy...personally my vote would have been for Claire Foy, but any one of them could have walked away with a nomination.
Tumblr media
Pearl
This was such an interesting horror flick...the saturated color palette, the extreme bursts of violence and of course, the magnificent performance by Mia Goth. She was absolutely fascinating to watch...the character of Pearl is so desperate to leave her home and to become a star that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
Tumblr media
They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
While I consider this to be one of the best movies I've seen this year...it's not necessarily one I'd ever want to watch again. At least not in the near future...because this movie is bleak. During the Great Depression, a group of people sign up for a dance marathon with the hope of winning the prize money. All the characters are so compelling and interesting to watch. Absolutely recommend watching it, especially for Jane Fonda's outstanding performance...but you might finish the movie a bit depressed.
Tumblr media
Deathtrap
Man, this movie is fun. It's the kind of movie that I can't say too much about, because the plot is so full of twists...but the basic idea is: A famous playwright, coming off a string of flops, learns that his former student has written a surefire hit play, and he conspires to murder his student and take the play as his own. And you have Christopher Reeve wearing some fantastic sweaters.
Tumblr media
Sweet Smell of Success
This movie is so good, I don't even know where to start. The performances, the writing, the cinematography...it's such a perfect example of a noir film (especially one that doesn't focus on a murder or a detective). I wasn't sure what to expect when I started, but from the moment I pressed play, I was completely engrossed.
Tumblr media
The Last of Sheila
I really caught up on my murder mysteries this year...and The Last of Sheila is a really great one. Another movie that I can't say too much about because of it's twisty plot...but I will say you can definitely see how it influenced Rian Johnson for his Knives Out films. Also, this was co-written by Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim!
Tumblr media
Catch-22
I blind bought this one after Alan Arkin's death...I had never seen it, but thought it seemed like a fun enough film to take the gamble on. And boy, was I right! While I can see why some critics didn't love it back then, this movie is so wonderfully bonkers, I can't help but love it! The witty dialogue, clever shot composition and excellent performances by a massive cast make this movie a real treat!
Tumblr media
Home Before Dark
This was a very random find for me...I actually just came across it on TV when it was starting and decided to stick with it (just like the olden days, get off my lawn). And while the movie itself isn't perfect, I was completely drawn in by Jean Simmons' performance. Her character has just returned home from a stay at an asylum, and while she tries to reacclimate to life at home, we start to see her lose it again...but we aren't sure if she is actually being pushed towards that breakdown intentionally. It has a few shades of the movie Gaslight, for sure.
Tumblr media
The Collector
This may have been my favorite new-to-me movie of the year! It is such an intense and uncomfortable film, with amazing performances by the two lead actors and an ending that I did not see coming. Given the story and the setting, I could almost see this easily being turned into a stage play...I'd love to see a theater try and capture the claustrophobic feeling you get when Miranda is trapped in that cellar.
Tumblr media
A few honorable mentions are: All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), The Thin Man, Sound of Metal, Persona and Somewhere in Time (this one mostly for the melodrama, lol)
Here's to more movies in 2024!

When at the Oscars After Party
harry styles x fem!reader
Trope: love at first sight
Warnings: uhhh none I think
Tumblr media
You were twelve years old when your best friend, Josie, told you she would take you with her when she became rich and famous.
"I'm gonna have a huge mansion and a Mercedes Benz, and you can come with me to Hollywood or New York and we'll live together and travel the world. You won't have to work either, and you can come hang out with me on movie sets and it will be so fun," she rambled off. The two of you had sprawled out on your trampoline after some intense tumbling.
"Okay yes on the car and the mansion and everything but the me not working. I still wanna curate museums. That's like the perfect job," you responded, staring up at the sky.
"Fine, you can work with art and stuff, and I'll be a movie star," she agreed.
"Can I be your date to the Oscars?" You asked, hoping to secure the spot ahead of time.
"Only if Zac Efron isn't up for it," she shrugged.
16 years later and Zac Efron was not up for it.
So, now you were at some high end bar or something, mingling with an insane amount of wealthy people. One of the night's winners' costars offered to get everyone's tabs for the night, so you'd strode right to the bar while Josie chatted up Chris Evans in the corner.
"Could I get a martini, please? Three olives," You asked, dropping your forearms on the bar and putting your weight on it, rather than your heels.
For college, you and Josie had run off to Los Angeles with your savings and the assurance that you would both eventually be successful enough to pay off your debts. During your junior year, you'd scored an internship at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and worked hard enough to score a job with them after graduation.
Josie went for audition after audition, scraping by in school but scoring smaller roles and appearances in movies before getting the job of a lifetime in a Marvel movie sophomore year.
After almost ten years in LA, you were offered a position at the Met in New York, coincidentally at the same time Josie decided she was 'over LA' and 'NYC would suit her'.
The money from your new job was great, you were very hardworking and very lucky. Maybe you didn't come close to Josie's wealth, but you did more than well enough for yourself. Enough to buy your own expensive shoes, even if you were wearing a dress from the rack of free clothing Josie was given but doesn't plan on wearing. No shame in it, someone's gotta wear 'em, right?
The bartender returns a minute or two later with your drink. You gave him a grateful nod before plucking the toothpick from the glass and sliding an olive off with your teeth, careful not to ruin your lipstick.
Sipping from the glass slowly, you started running your eyes over the crowd. You and Josie had arrived only fifteen minutes ago and there was an entire half of the room to get through still. The bar was in the shape of a circle, planted in the center of the floor. There were dark wooded booths with red velvet cushioning lining the walls, and an area in the back with upper level seating. Apparently there was even a hierarchy for the societal elite.
Your eyes danced over the faces in the room. Andrew Garfield was talking animatedly with Oscar Isaac, Ariana Debose and Daveed Diggs were telling some story to Lin Manuel Miranda in a booth across the room. As you looked around at everyone else, you could feel someone looking at me. you slowly glanced around at the other people surrounding the bar top, searching for the culprit.
Across the bar and three people to the left you spotted him. Sunned skin, soft brown hair, and green eyes that were planted right on you. When he realized you'd caught him staring, he didn't relent. He just gave you a small smile.
You stupidly closed your eyes for just a split second, to figure out if you were dreaming. You had been attending these events for years and you were rarely noticed by anyone other than Josie's coworkers and friends. When you opened them again, he hadn't looked away. Your eyes ran over his Gucci adorned shoulders and back up to his eyes. Your stomach whirled and you felt a wave of comfort and contentment wash over you. You could feel the heat rushing to your cheeks and ears.
You flashed a timid smile back at Harry. You watched him grab his glass of tequila and step back from the bar. Then, a flashy gold cocktail dress glinted in the corner of your eyes and you turned around to see Josie's dark skin glowing brilliantly in her dress.
"What was that?" She immediately asked, eyes wide.
"I honestly have no idea," you knocked back the rest of your martini and bit off another olive.
"You look like you're in love!" she laughed, earrings swinging as she twisted excitedly.
"Do I?" You stood straighter, heat rushing to your cheeks again.
"Holy shit. I know he's hot but god you look like you're actually swooning right now," Josie's eyebrows were raised to heaven and she looked at you in gleeful awe.
"I swooned for sure. Like I don't think I'll ever be the same. I would follow him anywhere," you spoke in complete seriousness. Josie said nothing else, just shook her head with a grin. "What?"
"Nothing," she stated.
"Something. What? Do I look stupid? Am I insane? Is there something on my face?" You rattled off questions.
"He's coming this way," she said smugly. Your heart jumped in pure panic.
"No he's not. Why the look? What was the look?" You refused to turn around to confirm her statement about Harry approaching.
"No he's definitely coming over here. The look was because you just fell in love after ten seconds of dreamy gazes between the two of you," Josie said with a smile.
"He can't come over here. There's no way, what do I even say?" You asked her, hanging on to her wrist as she backed away. You grimaced once she was out of your reach.
Play it cool.
Play it cool.
Play it cool.
Okay.
You twisted back around to your original 'leisurely leaning on the bar for maximum shoe relief' pose. For three seconds you could feel the left side of your arm tingle as he got closer, like your body new he was near. At the fourth second, the tingle exploded and shot to your chest, flipping your heart around.
"Hi," you heard his voice. Your peripheral vision was taken over by him as he leaned forward onto the bar beside you.
"Hi," you repeated, finally turning to look at him.
"I'm Harry," he said, his eyes dancing between yours.
"I know, I mean Y/n, I'm Y/n," you failed a little at playing it cool.
"It's nice to meet you," he said, smiling as he reached his hand out. You rose from the bar, straightening your self out as he followed suit.
"It's nice to meet you too," you stuck your own hand out this time, watching as he shook it gently.
"I like the feathers," he lifted his other hand to run over one of the feathery pieces on the front of your dress.
"Thanks," you breathed out. He paused for a moment, like he wasn't sure if he should say what's on his mind.
"Will you run away if I tell you that I feel like I already know you?" He brazenly asked.
"Funnily enough, I feel the same way," you said, not oblivious to the fact that his fingers were still holding on to your own. His lips quirked before he spoke again.
"Do you believe in love at first sight, Y/n?" He questioned. His eyes hadn't left yours, and if it weren't for the sight of Zendaya just like twenty feet ahead, you would've forgotten anyone else was there at all.
"I do now," you nodded, meaning it.

My Movie Review: "A Quiet Place: Day One" 🤫
**Caution...May Contain Some Spoilers**
Tumblr media
Hey everyone! I'm back with another movie review! 😁
Soo.... I had the chance to catch "A Quiet Place: Day One" in theaters this weekend, and here are my thoughts! First of all, this is one summer blockbuster that I was definitely looking forward to on my list! My friends and I had all seen Parts 1 and 2, so we were definitely excited to see how it all began. 😊
PROS
First of all, can I just say?? I LOVE Lupita Nyong'o. 😊 Anytime I see her onscreen, I'm reminded of just how great of an actress she is! She always shines bright in every role she's given, and she's extremely believable. You could literally feel her fear, shock, terror, and sadness throughout this film! This woman definitely earned her Oscar win years ago (just sorry that it was for that slave movie 😒), and I'm always excited to see what new projects she does next.
Djimon Hounsou is another one.... Anytime he's in a movie, I KNOW his acting is not going to disappoint lol. 😅 It was cool finally getting to see both Lupita and Djimon in a film together. It's just such a shame that they shared such little screen time together. 🥴
The acting was great in this. Everyone did a great job and pulled their own weight.
The music was beautiful in this film. I listen to musical scores in films (I'm a geek, I know lol 😜) and it was very moving.
I loved the chemistry between Lupita's character and Joseph Quinn's character. I had never seen any of his films before (at least, I don't think so? 🤔), so it was nice seeing him onscreen and witnessing his interactions with Lupita. Their chemistry wasn't even anything romantic or sexual onscreen, but they had really great platonic chemistry together! 😊
CONS
I must say.... I think I was expecting this film to be a little more scary than it actually was lol? 😅 I was bracing myself to be pretty scared like I was for the first two films, but all in all, the film wasn't really all that scary?? There were some great jump scares throughout, but nothing that really had me getting creeped out, or reaching for my friend's sleeve lol. 😅
This movie was actually a lot sadder than I thought it would be? Idk if that was a pro or a con lol, but I guess I was expecting it to be more action, but in reality, it was quite slow-moving....and sad. The end especially was kind of sad. 😢 Don't get me wrong, it was a very beautifully-shot film, and it really was touching, but a film that you're thinking is mainly going to be about aliens invading turns out to be more about grief, death, and moving on from the past. 😢
I was definitely entertained with this film, but I feel like I didn't really learn much about the aliens? I thought in this film (since it's a prequel) we were going to learn a little more about WHY they invaded, what they were after, and maybe a little more backstory? I guess my assumption was all wrong lol. 😅
OVERALL
Overall, this is a fun movie if you just want to go out and have some fun with your friends. Although I didn't find it all that "scary" (and I'm usually a scaredy cat lol 😅), there are quite a few jump scares and "gotcha!" moments in the film to keep you thrilled and entertained. I would say that this film was more suspenseful than it was "scary". The film was really enjoyable though! That's all I ask from a movie honestly lol.
I wish I had been warned that this film was more sad than it was scary lol. It was beautifully shot, and the way it handles death, grief, and the loss of a loved one is great. Lupita, Joseph, and Djimon all do some superb acting in this one, so if you're a fan of either of them, then by all means, go check this one out! 😁 Lupita especially is so good of an actress. I love the fact that she ventures out of the usual norm and isn't afraid to do horror films, thriller films, suspense films, etc....all genres that historically, black women have usually been missing in. So, I like that she takes risks and isn't afraid to do those types of films, even though she's already an Oscar Winner. 😁
This film waws NOT directed by Jon Krasinski, and I think I could tell lol. I know he was busy filming something else, so he couldn't direct this one (which is fine). I kind of think that the small-town aspect made the other two films way more scary than the NYC setting. I know it makes sense since the city is way louder than the country lol, but you know what I mean lol....
OVERALL SCORE: 7.5/10

What did you think about Challengers? Because i’m having a very unpopular opinion… i didn’t like Zendaya’s acting. I thought it was so forced. I just think she couldn’t deliver the nuance of Tashi as a character and her scenes were so flat… I could see a different actress playing the role but Zendaya really didn’t do much with it. Her delivery was very monotonous and as i said, she didn’t give her the dimensions I feel were needed to understand her as a character. And Zendaya had just one facial expression for Tashi the entire movie too and that threw me off and completely disappointed me too because she had the material to do more and just didn’t.
The real stand out of the movie was Josh O’Connor that was irreconcilable with that role and managed to give Patrick some depth with very easy and smart tone changes and he ate every scene he was in (and dare I say, he was holding Zendaya’s performance together). Faist did well with what he was given and I think this will open a lot of doors for him in the film world.
But for this to be Zendaya’s big “lead role” it felt incredible empty as a performance. And I feel so many reviewers were so afraid to critize her lack of versatility in that performance or afraid to say her co-stars had a better performance and overall chemistry together because she has a massive social media support. But… it is the truth and if there’s anyone in there that will get an Oscar nomination for that will be O’Connor.
(But I don’t think the movie will get any acting nominations except for some technical/script categories).
I finally saw (and am now obsessed with) Challengers so responding after long while lol. Honestly, I loved it. My favorite movie of the year so far (followed by Dune 2 and I Saw the TV Glow). I agree Josh O’Conner was excellent and devious and sexy and just… a scene-stealer. I think that each of their performances worked for the characters as written? I think Tashi is supposed to be more cold and calculating but she’s also funny and biting and sexy, I can definitely totally understand why you feel this way though. I personally think all their personalities and portrayals work. Mike Faist is definitely the most submissive of all three from the get-go, while the other two and are more combative and go after what they want. The interplay between them all and their personalities and going after each other (in every sense of the word) makes the film. So I don’t necessarily fully agree (at least on this watch) but I do totally see where you’re coming from. I honestly often get a coldness from at least characters in Luca’s movies (like everyone except Timmy and his dad in CMBYN, everyone except the young bf and maybe the lesbian daughter in I Am Love) so I was worried this would be the same but this felt really lively and much sexier than most of his movies to me. So I feel like it’s more character than Zendaya and I really liked her here but yeah.
Also since we’re on the topic anyway, here’s a letterboxd review I WISH I could’ve written:

Everything everywhere all at once winning best picture and all the other awards makes me very emotional. From a representational standpoint yes. But I guess also from a filmmaker standpoint.
(I KNOW THIS IS LONG BUT IF YOU COULD READ THIS, THAT WOULD MEAN THE WORLD)
I’ve been making films for 10 or so years and for many years never saw much outward success. I would put my all into a project, down to hand making the sets, costumes, editing it myself (etc), but when I would submit to festivals for kid filmmakers, I would be left heartbroken sitting in the theater knowing that my film wasn’t good enough. That is had been too weird, not shot on a good enough quality camera, and that it simply wasn’t the “type of film” that could win awards.
Then enter this film. It marched to the beat of its own drum, it told a story that was authentic and sincere, it told a story about a Chinese immigrant and her family (A STORY WHICH RARELY GETS TOLD TO A MASS AUDIENCE IN MAINSTREAM HOLLYWOOD), it told a story about a queer woman struggling with family issues and depression and suicide, it gave no fucks, it gave them all. It was goofy. It was chaotic. It was heart wrenching. It was everything.
I’m a filmmaker, but I’m also sometimes a cynic. At times I am worried about the future of creative fields I hope to enter given AI threatening real artists, the increasing difficulty to break into Hollywood with no connections, and of course a litany of reboots, sequels, and franchises (not to say that this is bad, but there’s a tiny part of me that fears that this is all it will end up being. At least in terms of studio funding). I worry that while I may make films now, there may not be a place for me one day.
Seeing this film changed that. EEAAO was so boldly itself that it relit my creative spark to make work that would do the same.
And of course the awards.
If you had told me a couple years ago that a film about rocks and hotdog fingers would win best picture, I would have been confused then probably laughed. Even as the award season beast was beginning to awaken from it’s year long slumber, I remained skeptical that this film would get awards, much less hundreds of them. Yet it destroyed the competition and with every win and every speech, my heart got a bit more full and damn it, I believed that maybe there was a chance this film could take the title.
Last Sunday, I wasn’t able to watch the oscars. I had just gotten over being sick and needed the sleep. The next morning I woke up and by some stroke of fate the people on the radio were talking about the Oscars, I held my breath, and I heard it. Best Picture Winner Everything Everywhere All At Once. I later watched the acceptance speeches that day and wept. This meant the world to me now but also to the me years ago who sat in those theaters with a broken heart thinking that their movies weren't good enough.
Now of course you can still be a cynic (or a realist who knows?) and assume that this changes nothing. No needle was moved. And next year the films getting awarded and produced with tons of eyes on them will be the next Green Book or whatever. But if this movie’s taught me anything, its that feeling optimism is ok.
And yeah given all it's wins, people are probably now gonna rag about it and say it's overrated. They can have their opinions, but I don't care. Like what you want to like, life's too short.
I’m gonna keep on making movies, the kind of movies I want to make not what I try to make to win awards or impress other people. I’m gonna try to be a kinder person. I’m going try to keep on telling stories of queer people, of found families, of hope, of comedy, and of whatever else I can think of. I’m gonna hope that people continue to create just as they always do and that this time they get the attention, platform, and opportunities that they deserve instead of it going to those who don’t.
Thank you Michelle Yeoh. Thank you Stephanie Hsu. Thank you Ke Huy Quan. Thank you Jamie Lee Curtis. Thank you James Hong. Thank you Paul Rogers. Thank you Jonathan Wang. Thank You Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Thank You Everything Everywhere All At Once.
You changed my life and countless others. Thank you thank you thank you.
