Marauders/Emeralds Era Characterisation/Builds/Backgrounds in my fics

-I’ve seen a few newbies looking for head-canons to try out in their fics. Feel free to use any of these.

-there is some variation, of course, plus some of my fics are set at the younger Hogwarts ages, but usually in this order from tallest to shortest as adults:

Remus Lupin (6’ 1”-6’4”) - typically an inch or two taller than James, but rarely quite tall. Lanky, long-limbed with curly dirty blond/light brown hair. Sometimes, he’s stronger than he looks, other times he’s a wet noodle. Disabled (usually physically, but sometimes with Tourette’s or Epilepsy). Introvert. Classic literature/fantasy novel buff. Neutral Good. Welsh. Bisexual with a preference for men. Smokes occasionally, prefers weed.

James Potter (around 6’) - athletic with strong upper body, solid but rarely super muscular. Wears glasses, intelligent, and has ADHD. Chaotic Good. Messy curls. Wide open music taste, but always Queen and a sucker for a ballad. Deep voice. Extrovert. Deeply romantic. Usually Desi via Euphemia, but love the Latinx James hc. Bisexual>Pansexual (used interchangeably for James). Non-smoker.

Barty Crouch Jr. (around 6’) - athletic, but slim. This man has no arse. Stronger than he looks. British, but love the hc that he’s Italian. Burnt out gifted kid, occasionally tech savvy. Heavy-metal and emo fan. Usually has ODD. Extrovert. Chaotic Evil. Omnisexual or Bi with a preference for mascs. Often with tattoos and/or piercings. Heavy smoker.

Dorcas Meadowes (5’9-5’11) - athletic, or slender with some curves. Black, British, and the most intelligent of the group. Long braids. Ambivert. Love her characterisation as a good Slytherin. True Neutral. Listens to R&B, but secretly loves pop music, mostly sapphic artists. Occasionally has Depression. Neither butch or femme exclusive, bit of both. Bisexual or Lesbian. Non-smoker.

Evan Rosier (5’9”-5’10”) - painfully average floppy-haired blond white boy with a tan. Neutral Evil. Solid build. Grunge music fan. Piercings rather than tattoos. French or British. Ambivert. Demisexual. Prefers edibles or shrooms to smoking.

Regulus Black (5’7”-5’10”) - usually a hair taller than Sirius, but he was shorter by a bit once or twice. Chin-length wavy hair. French. Writer (poetry) and/or musical prodigy. Introvert. Slim to average build. Lawful Evil. Anxiety, OCD, and/or Autistic. Classical music or jazz, nothing with lyrics. I have written him as intersex (or trans in a few WIPs), but usually a gay cis man. Non-smoker, mostly. Social drinker, but overestimates his tolerance.

Sirius Black (5’8”-5’10”) - most attractive amongst the guys. Usually slim, but strong and flexible. Highly intelligent, but easily bored and uninterested in academics. Artistic (painter) and/or musical (percussion instruments). Rock/grunge junkie. Shoulder-length hair and tattooed. Chaotic Good/Chaotic Neutral. Sometimes ADD, often emotionally stunted with abandonment issues. Heavy drinker, occasional smoker.

Mary McDonald (5’8”-5’10”) - depends on the fic, but always in heels so she seems taller. Curvy queen. Occasional short skirt to break Dorcas’s brain.

Peter Pettigrew (5’5”-5’7”) - stocky/plus-size, straight blond hair. British. Logical and strategic, but struggles with abstract concepts. Chess player, comic book collector, video game/movie buff, and weed fiend, but non-smoker. People-pleaser and supportive of his friends, but ambivalent around strangers. Ambivert. Asexual, unlabeled, Questioning.

Pandora Lovegood (5’-5’3”) - always petite and slim. Long blonde hair, usually loose or in elaborate half-updos (like Phoebe Buffet in Friends). Hippie vibes and high-femme. Usually Autistic. Ambivert -depends on who she’s with. French. Animal lover, compassionate, high-strung, a gossip but rarely maliciously, collects crystals. Pansexual. Non-smoker, but open to experimentation. Rarely drinks.

hiiii spenny tell me about this intersex reg fic!!!!

This one is actually my *least* fleshed out, but it stems from the fact that I straight up haven't come across one.

It is estimated that 1.7% of the population is intersex- which is 1-2 in 100 people, and so not uncommon at all. Yet, most people don't know what this means, what it looks like, and how it changes absolutely nothing about a person yet, in some instances, could make them feel like a commodity.

I wanted to see more representation, so I will be including intersex characters as part of my diversity plan for my fics.

The idea I had outlined for this particular fic started as me wanting a bartylus sex worker AU, and spiralled from there. Intersex!Regulus is a sex worker with previous sexual trauma. He entered the industry and was used because of his sex, before taking back his power and establishing his own business. His being intersex was not something that his viewers (main platform OF) could actually tell he was/he continues his work and doesn't make it known to his subscribers.

Enter James Potter, a cis porn star (friend of Remus Lupin, also intersex), who Barty suggests Reg does a collab with.

The fic explores their relationships, being a boss ass bitch with a self made empire, accepting themselves and coming out, being an advocate and using your voice for good etc. Its all very wholesome and lovely in my head.

I like the idea that Remus and Regulus had always gotten along. They just understood each other. They vibed. They were chill, and Remus was the only Marauder who was normal about Jegulus.

Then the Prank rolls around and suddenly there are no 'Marauders' anymore. James pulls a dumb bitch move and, in the most out of character thing he's ever done, chooses Sirius. Oh sure, he's LIVID with Sirius, but he chooses Padfoot anyways.

Peter, despite being a simp for James, sides with Remus, because he sides with the person who can protect him, and he was introduced to the Marauders by Remus beating the everloving shit out of a bully who was picking on Peter and he is now slightly scared of the werewolf.

So Remus and Peter are alone, and even the TEACHERS are beginning to feud over the whole situation. Minnie and Pomfrey love Remus like their own child, and Sprout is 110% willing to join that group, even though she has no idea what's going on, and don't even get me started on Newt Scamander (CoMC Teacher at the time)

Around this time, the Slytherin group was starting to get tired of Snape being an asshole and an idiot, so he kinda got booted, because god knows Reggie knows Remus is a werewolf and he does NOT tolerate people trying out out his friends, be that saying that Lucius is gay as the sky is blue (It's pretty obvious but still) or saying that Barty is intersex, he won't put up with it.

Keep in mind, at this time, Remus is absolutely DROWNING in guilt and self loathing. Like, for Peter, every day is a 24 hour attempt to talk him down from the roof.

So instead of siding with Snape, Regulus replaces him with Remus. At first, everyone is kinda iffy on this, the Marauders don't exactly get along with them, but they kinda grow to 'tolerate' it. (Read: They like it and they love him)

Like, all these pureblooded reluctant Death Eaters, and a gay werewolf. It makes no sense, but it happened. Flash forwards to the beginning of year seven, Euphemia Potter takes James and Sirius to Platform 9 3/4. Remus hasn't spoken to either of them for months, to the point where they were slightly concerned.

Sirius feels bad, James feels bad, Remus wants to not exist anymore in a violent way, and Peter just wants everyone to get along. Euphemia is confused as to why Remus is just towering over against a wall instead of coming to say hi to the other Marauders, weren't they super close? Of course, she has no idea what happened, because James won't tell her The Secret.

Effie: Why is Remus standing alone?

James: It's a long story.

Effie: You and Sirius should go say hello, at least!

James: I don't wish to die today, mum.

Effie: He's your friend, and he clearly needs to talk to someone. Go check on him.

James: Mum, I promise, he does not want us to talk to him.

Effie: Then I will. *Walks away*

So Effie talks to Remus and gets more of the story. Not all, but more. She now understands the basic plot. Sirius fucked up bad, Snape also fucked up bad, James made a bad choice but it isn't his fault, Snape and Remus got hurt. Badly.

And it is at this point, when Sirius and James (Who now is targeting Lucius because Snape has blackmail) are both looking at Remus, that Regulus appears. He arrives alone, as per usual, and the first thing he does is rush over to Remus. Sirius goes completely slackjawed and has the goddamn audacity to be offended that Remus moved on so fast, despite the fact that he did not and is actually barely coping enough to talk or even just eat on a semi-regular basis.

Quickly, Remus and Regulus are joined by Barty Crouch Jr., Evan Rosier and Lucius.

And the only thing Sirius and James hear over the chaos of the station as the group passes them is "So Lucy..." Trailing off as they walk away. And Remus said it. Remus is close enough to these people to call Lucius 'I hate everyone and everything other than my hair' Malfoy by Lucy.

I don't know, I just like the idea of the Slytherins adopting Remus after The Prank.

He realises he only likes he/him some of the time and realises he prefer they/he.

Very good at gardening, so when he gets to Norway, he starts a fruit and vege garden, gets some chickens, and a goat. He becomes very self sufficient.

Stops using magic because it gives him flashbacks.

Extreme depresso espresso. Part of the reason he ran off was to focus on himself after years of worrying about if Voldy Moldy was going to k!ll them.

He was shocked at the new Draco, but came to accept that he changed.

And that he was taller than them.

Draco only wants a select few knowing where he lives, and only some can know what country he is even in.

Harry takes Draco to go see his mother.

The first thing Narcissa does is check Draco for any injuries.

Narcissa is the best mum™️ to Draco, especially after they come out.

She listens to him get excited about his garden and animals.

A few months later, she visits him, only to be chased by the chickens who he named after the hogwarts founders and Minerva McGonagall.

Harry realises he loves Draco after Draco invites him in for tea.

Harry makes the first move, asking them to show him around the nearby muggle town, where Draco already has some new friends.

Dont enter Draco's house unless you want to find them being romantic.

Harry helps them get over the ED.

Ron has a very bad grudge against Draco, even after they apologized. Hermione us open minded, as she had gotten to know Narcissa and realised just what Draco had been through. Molly was more like Hermione, and forgave him.

After 2-3 years, Harry and Draco get married.

A year after, they decide they want a baby.

Draco is intersex, so he can carry a baby.

They have twins. A daughter and a son. They name the daughter Rosalie Lily Narcissa Potter, and the boy Ruben James Lucius Potter.

Let’s Do MATH

This is actually about writing. It is specifically about writing diversed characters and even more narrowly, by creating it by changing a canon character to have whatever trait.

The majority of canon is an unfortunate ensemble of neurotypical, straight, cis, white Christian males. I probably messed up the adjective order there, but you get the point. Very bland Wonder Bread there.

Fanfiction has a tendency (and pretty much since its conception) to change aspects of canon for whatever reason suits the author’s fancy at that moment. Fic writers literally exist because they looked at canon and went “hm. I have a few notes.”

What if these same sex characters got together? What if X character was female? What if Y character actually dealt with their canon trauma/issue?

Like a cat stalking a mouse, fic writers have been edging towards adding towards adding more diversity to the diversity they add to these Wonder Bread fandoms.

What if X character isn’t gay but is bi/pan/ace? What if the character was only assigned male at birth? What if the character was assigned female and appears male in canon because they’re trans? What if they’re intersex?

What if the character deals with canon trauma/issue the same way that RL people with it would? They’re in therapy and may take meds.

What if X character was Jewish? Muslim? Pagan? Atheist?

What if X character was deaf/HoH or blind? What if they were mute or autistic? What if they had arthritis or needed a wheelchair?

None of these tweaks to canon are seen as inherently inferior, even if there are already a canon character who might have that particular diversity trait. Or at least I haven’t seen anyone complaining about fic writers doing so, unless the writer made something that is outright bad representation or a prejudiced trope. And then, they’re calling out the bad/harmful rep and not the change from canon.

It’s acknowledged that changing a character in such a way adds diversity.

You start with 10 WASP characters, take away 2, and add 2 diversed characters, you’re gonna be left with 8 WASPs and 2 diversed. If you were starting with 10 WASPs and 4 diversed, when you take away 2 WASPs and add that to the diversed group, you will get a higher number of diversed characters just the same as you would when starting with 0.

That’s how math works.

Clint Barton isn’t less deaf because Echo exists.

James Rhodes isn’t less Black because Sam Wilson is as well.

Ana Jarvis doesn’t spontaneously become fertile just because Natasha Romanoff isn’t.

Spock isn’t less Jewish if James Kirk is.

John Rainbird isn’t less Native if Charlie is, too.

And the Patil twins aren’t less Desi if Harry Potter is.

Neither is Dean Thomas and Angelina Johnson less Black if Hermione Granger is.

It is not taking away diversity to change a character’s traits like this. When an author adds diversity to the characters they want to write, they aren’t taking away anything from the characters they don’t but who has the diversity in canon. Those characters still exist, elsewhere in canon if not in a particular fic, and they aren’t less what they were just because they’re not in a particular fic.

That’s not how math works.

I know it’s a big joke that writers can’t do math, but it’s time to lay this argument to rest. It’s not a debatable point because there’s nothing to debate. There is nothing inherently wrong with racebending a character just like there hasn’t been anything inherently wrong with any other kind added diversity.

It all started off with a party in the Shrieking Shack, six kids lost in the Forbidden Forest, and copious amounts of alcohol in everyone’s systems. It ended with a kid on deaths doorstep in the Slytherin boys bathroom. No one really knows what happened that night, just that someone had done something horrible enough to make someone attempt suicide. But then rumours spiralled out of control and soon Scorpius Malfoy was known as the mutant kid that had been jinxed a few times and wanted attention. People assumed he was expelled, it was easier that way. Kept Hogwarts out of the papers. But Albus Potter had seen what condition the kid was in, this was no accident, and no cry for attention.

Luckily, this story has a happy ending. A happy ending that begins in the Grim Sanitarium.

Instead of calling us Snape apologists, why don’t we start calling y’all Marauder apologists?

After all, you seem to be apologizing for James and Sirius’s shitty behavior. However, we aren’t apologizing for Severus’s shitty behavior. Unlike the Marauder apologists, we embrace Sev’s darkness. We explore it and debate about it. All you Marauder apologists do is make fluffy headcanons about James being the most progressive dude on the planet and Remus and Sirius being super gay when the former was probably straight (though I don’t mind a Remus who’s bi). Now, not to say I’m hating on y’all (some of your headcanons aren’t too bad) but I’m just saying: Aren’t you guys apologizing for your faves? You don’t see us erasing Sev’s bad behavior, but we see y’all erasing James and Sirius’s bad behavior all the time.
