🍂🍁🎃 Autumn-Themed Batfam Fic Reccs 🎃🍁🍂
Tumblr media
The season is getting a little colder and the season is turning towards winter. The nights longer and the need for hot drinks stronger. This is my favourite time of year and one that just invites curling up with some reading material. In celebration of my favourite season, I thought I'd recc my favourite autumn vibes Batfam fics.
These fics are all completed and available for free on AO3. They all lean horror (Halloween is fastly approaching! 🦇), with some of them being darker than others. I love horror so that's where I tend to stray. Hope you enjoy! Welcome to Beggars' Bones - Bridgesburn - Length: 143k - Genre: Thriller, "True" Crime, Kidnapping in a Creepy Small Town
"Welcome to Beggars' Bones" is the epitome of what I think of when I think of a perfect story for a bitter autumn night. It reads like an expertly crafted thriller and perfect for those who love a realistic horror story. The basic premise is that Dick, Jason, Tim and Damian are on a road trip when Dick's car breaks down. He sends Tim and Damian to go get help and it goes absolutely horribly from there.
Mind the tags because the story hits on real themes and is intense. It draws to mind movies like "Silence of the Lambs" and "Misery" and makes you think twice about stopping in a small town.
Vrykolakas - @chemical-processes - Length: 34k - Genre: Horror, Monsters, Having Your Son for Dinner
My first recc was horror based in reality and this recc is horror based in all the things that go bump in the night. Timothy Drake is not okay. Timothy Drake is not safe. Timothy Drake doesn't have anyone to tell this to, especially not his parents. Read this one if you love a story about a terrifying monster and are not afraid of some gore. It's a bloody good time.
To Hear, To See, To Smile - @jube514 & @salparadiselost - Length: 8.6k - Genre: Light Horror, Monster Kids, Bruce's Horrifically Fierce Adoption Instinct
Is it too pretentious to recommend my own fic? Perhaps, but I'm not known for my humility. I wrote this fic with Jube and it's perfect for the Halloween season. The loose premise is that Bruce has acquired children in the form of eldritch horrors and he is well on his way of getting one more. Although his children are all monsters, it's on the lighter side.
when doves cry - @silk-scarlet-ribbons - Length: 13k - Genre: Grief, Death, When a Memory is as Fresh and Festering as a Wound
This is one of the ones that's making it in through autumn vibes. It's about grief and ghosts that form immediately after death. It's very psychological and a deep scrape into Tim's grieving head before he even realises he's grieving. The horror in this is slow and it sets in like the decay of a human body. It's so deliciously creeping and will have you shivering even if there's no ghosts except for the one's in Tim's mind. The Little Neighbor - @oberonbronze - Length: 27k - Genre: Horror, Vampires, a Little Grave in the Dark and Mysterious Woods
This one is the newest on this list because, well, it posted as I was making this list and I stopped to swallow it all in one go. This one features one Dick trying to bond with his new little brother, Jason, by exploring the woods behind Wayne Manor. Nothing could possibly go wrong! I would encourage you to read without getting too deep in the tags, because it sets you up for maximum twists. It's a true horror feature that reminds me of Hereditary and Rosemary's Baby, so if you like something along those lines just go in blind! it's life after death (roll the credits) & when the bodies hit the floor - nashequilibrium - Length: 6k & 7k - Genre: Supernatural Horror, Siblinghood, Spooky Stories Told Around a Campfire Two for the price of one! I recommend both of these stories for those who love lighter horror more in the vein of Scooby Doo. Both of these fics feature sibling pairs - Dick & Jason in one and Steph & Damian in the other - investigating some mysterious happenings. These are both fun little romps and the dialogue is excellent.
Finally...
Not quite a recc, but I know a lot of people like to know what I've been up to, me and @spookyprime have been working on a Batman fancomic together and we are about ready to start posting it. It's a medical mystery and a horror story set in 1910s Europe. We will be posting it here: @vivisection-of-a-surgeon-comic . I've written out a more in-depth synopsis in that blog and you can give it a follow if you're curious.
So happy reading and happy halloween! I hope your nights are bitter and spooky.

New-ish post, kinda posting this on different platforms and getting a general vibe check for some ideas I have. But basically this Halloween I want to actually do something for the TTRPG and Actualplay world (oh yeah I’m into those kinds of things). I want to try and get both players, GMs, and casual viewers alike something fun to look forward to this especially spooky season. I’ll probably talk a little more when we get closer to the actual season of scare-giving but just know that if you’re interested I’m still looking for people to join in!!
As my team and I’d first debut we’re going to try and do a two to four session actual play, which will probably be released in the weeks leading up to Halloween. We’ve had a couple good friend way in on the matter of “setting” but now I come to you fine folk. Mind you this is a horror campaign/arc so if…
Tumblr media
Isn’t your thing, keep on a moving.
But without further ado here are a couple of the possible settings for our players, and myself, this coming espookee season…
1.) Somewhere off the coast of Florida, 1926 end of the first major housing boom in the state, a small island which calls back to the Spanish Empire, is Isla Boñyela, a small port made tourist location during the boom of disposable wealth in 1920s America. A small group of friends from the northeast tag along down for the perfect paradise vacation. Only to discover the island is much much older than anyone could have ever assumed. Whilst dealing with upstart gangsters, unnerving US soldiers, and the terrified locals they find something older than even undead conquistadors.
While I don’t have a working title, this is an old project in the running which I’ve had a few attempts at revamping over time. Its previous title was “perfect paradise vacation,” and runs on the Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition game. Anywho it’s a blast of fun with Caribbean lore, tone of anti-imperialism, and something dark lurking beneath the waves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2.) 1950’s America, the nonexistent state of Mid-Atlantia (DMV coded) in a small suburban neighborhood where nothing goes wrong… it’s almost “All-Hallows-Eve” and little Johnny and Susie want nothing more than to trick or treat this year with all the big kids, Dad’s finally getting the big promotion at work, and Mom just got a new waffle iron! Sure everything is neat here in America. Heck you just got new neighbors! Newlyweds in fact from somewhere big and fancy, they sure aren’t like any of us in our simple town. But… and you can’t say exactly why but things are different. Or perhaps they’re all too the same? Everyday a repeat of ever other bland day that followed you over and over and over and over… and you could swear, while no one may listen to you there’s someone out there. Stalking you from outside your own home- or- perhaps, he’s just your friendly new neighbor welcoming you… to the end.
Ahhhhhh! I’ve also been working on this one for a sec and god writing it out does excite me. This is also a Call of Cthulhu game but modified/homebrewed to have a uniquely 1950s horror feel. This is definitely one of the more unique games I’ve written and am truly interested in seeing where it goes (even if we don’t choose it). This is for those who feel like isolation, fear of the unknown, fear from within, and liminal space horror comes best into play! So whadya say neighbor?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3.) The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend, or How I Learned to Love Strahd, okay so this one is a lot less horror-y and falls much more under the comedic spooky category, just so yall know. Deep in the middle of Barovia, the ancient kingdom of Vampires, meets a council of Count Strahd von Zarovich's greatest commanders and lieutenants to hunt down Strahd's greatest enemy Rudolph van Richten and his party of heroes known as "The Grape-Smashers." Strahd's lieutenants have been gifted powers greater than any mere mortals, but are these gifts enough to stop Van Richten, or even enough to stop the personal ambitions of each other? Come find out in "How I Learned to Love Strahd."
Okay, as much as this may seem like a joke suggestion it cracks me up and I feel like it would be ill-advised of me to not at least mention it. In an era where "The Curse of Strahd," is well-overdone at this point, it's worth a take from an all evil "revenge story." Obviously this will be in Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition, which, in my opinion, is really hard to use for horror, but this is a nice go-around. Come for the evil PCs, maybe a PvP battle or two, and a game of intrigue in the shadows of Barovia! All that and a buff Van Richten.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4.) Before Annapolis was ever called such it was known as Providence, a settlement of exiled Puritans in the Province of Maryland, but these early days were no easy set-up for the far-flung protestants... in the mid 1600s the English Civil War spilled out into their holdings across the waves as brother turned on brother, clan erasing clan, and something from the shores of the Old World would arrive in the New. When around every corner could be someone you've known your whole life, what's stopping them from hunting you in the depths of winter. All matters made worse when rumors of a witch begins circulating your small home.
Think "The VVitch" (2015) meets "A Field in England" (2013) meets Atun Shei's recent film "The Sudsbury Devil" (2023). It is the unexplored wilderness of early colonial Maryland, but the hateful warmongering that slowly builds that makes the horror and tension so clear. Unsure of what system we'll be using, but maybe the new Regency Cthulhu system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5.) The Great Baltimore Fire of 1904 destroyed some 140 Acres of Baltimore proper... and in it's rubble awakened something far worse. But you and your fellow survivors are just trying to get by in the aftermath of the fire... only for something to call out, whether some strange magicks or perhaps just a sickness... but sickness doesn't even linger like this... it doesn't call to you...
Some more local history, aspiring from the actual Fire of 1904 things quickly devolve from there as rumors of a cult begin to spread along the streets of Rosland Park... a mysterious illness leaving even more dead... and the death of an eclectic professor. Definitely using the Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition for this one.

Book Blurb:
From Gillian Flynn Books, a lyrical YA horror by debut author Wen-yi Lee that’s perfect for fans of She Is a Haunting, Stephen King’s IT, and The Haunting of Hill House.
Art student Isadora Chang swore never to return to Slater. Growing up, Isa never felt at ease in the repressive former mining town, even before she realized she was bisexual—but after the deaths of two of her childhood friends, Slater went from feeling claustrophobic to suffocating. Isa took off before the town could swallow her, too, even though it meant leaving behind everything she knew, including her last surviving friend Mason.
When Isa’s abusive father kicks the bucket, she agrees to come back just long enough to collect the inheritance. But then Mason, son of the local medium, turns up at the cemetery with a revelation and a plea: their friends were murdered by a supernatural entity, and he needs Isa to help stop the evil—before it takes anyone else.
When Isa begins to hear strange songs on the wind, and eerie artwork fills her sketchbook that she can’t recall drawing, she’s forced to stop running and confront her past. Because something is waiting in the shadows of Slater’s valleys, something that feeds on the pain and heartbreak of its children. Whatever it is, it knows Isa’s back… and it won’t let her escape twice.
Review:
When a bisexual art student returns home to her small mining town she doesn't expect to find two of her three childhood friends dead and the other one is positive that she is the key to helping him find out who the supernatural entity is that murdered them. Isadora Chang left her small town of Slater and promised to never return, yet when she begins having haunting nightmares that impact her art and causes her to fail her recent show, she has to come home and redo the portfolio..... but that also means facing the friends she left behind. Isa comes home only to discover that two of her childhood friends had died and the surviving friend Mason is positive they were murdered. Mason knows theres a supernatural entity causing it and is determined to get Isa's help because she somehow has a connection to the supernatural.... but can they figure out what's wrong before it comes back for them next? This was a story about grief, healing, and friendship. It focused a lot on the complicated relationships between friends. It's a bittersweet read and I was hoping for more horror/tension in this book. It got confusing at certain parts and the actual plot line felt a bit wonky, but overall I liked the atmosphere/town vibes and kind of wish there was more explored between the dynamics of Isa and Mason. It's not a bad book and it's one I would recommend for spooky season. I also love that both the main characters were bisexual reps.

If you are still doing book recommendations, can I ask some advice on book with witches? Classic, old school witches, with pointy hats and brooms, cats, cauldrons... it's just SO the right season and weather
I have. SO MANY. Witch books. Unfortunately I don't remember specific triggers for these, so do your research as needed!
Historical or fantasy witches
The Year of the Witches by Alexis Henderson is about Immanuelle, a biracial teenager living in Bethel. Bethel is a land ruled by the laws of the Prophet in which women live in submission and devotion. Immanuelle stumbles across her dead mother's journal, which reveals secrets of curses and magic. This book is dark and often upsetting, and really wonderful.
Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett- if you're looking for old school, warty old witches with brooms and wit, the witches of Discworld are where it's at. This one I particularly like because it's about fairy tales.
The Once and Future Witches by Alix E Harrow - Possibly my favorite of the list?? A really dreamy, wonderful book about three estranged sisters who come together in magic. It's about the suffrage movement and thee importance of intersectional feminism- it doesn't shy away from the racism of the suffragettes, which I think is so important to confront. And there's a sapphic romance! It has this really cool vision of the Mother, the Maiden, and the Crone which I always have sort of had a tough time reconciling.
Romantic witches
Payback's a Witch by Lana Harper- Sapphic romance! A young woman returns to her magical small town in order to judge a competition among the powerful witch families. She intends to get revenge on her ex-boyfriend, one of the competitors, with the help of his other ex-girlfriends, also witches. She falls in love with one of these exes. I LOVED the setting of this one- if you're looking for a quirky small town with Halloween vibes, it's this one. The town is full of witches but it's also a tourist trap for Halloween-loving normals, so it's a really fun combination.
The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling - I have NOT read this one yet, it's on my list! A romance about a witch and her ex, obviously!
YA witches
Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson - Mila and her best friend Riley are amateur witches and when Riley is murdered, Mila casts a spell to bring her back to life. When doing so, she accidentally brings back two recently deceased mean girls from their high school. This one is fun, sort of wacky, and adventurous. Perfect if you want teen witch adventures.
Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu- A queer, graphic novel about a witch and a werewolf who fall in love. Super adorable! Lots of baking, small towns, and some fun monsters.
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas - Brujos! Trans boy Yadriel is trying to prove to his family that he's a true brujo and in the process accidentally summons the ghost of a very handsome and very sweet and stupid boy. Big fan of this one! Marigolds and magic everywhere.
Other??
Cackle by Rachel Harrison - Annie has recently been dumped by her boyfriend of ten years, and she gets a new job in a small town. While she's recovering her broken heart, she means Sophie. Sophie is beautiful, magnetic, and takes Annie on as sort of a mentee. But the sweet townsfolk are afraid of Sophie, and Sophie's house has spiders and violent ghosts... This was pitched to me as a Hallmark movie if instead of the broken hearted protagonist falling in love, she meets a wicked witch who teaches her to embrace her inner darkness. And that's this. This book is about embracing your power, forgoing romantic attachments, and doing some dark magic. And the power of female friendship!!! Slightly spooky moments, but I wouldn't call it horror exactly.

Review: The Dead and the Dark (Courtney Gould)
Rating: ★★★★★/5
“I am the dark created from everything. I am the memories of this place come to life - anger, grief, hate. You know these feelings well. You have felt me here your whole life. In a sense, I am Snakebite. When the Dark stopped speaking, the world was quiet. But I want to be more than a shadow. I want to help you. Will you let me?” I loved this surprisingly poignant, emotional, scary story. I knew it had everything I loved in it going in, but it hit me in unexpected ways as I blasted through. When Logan Ortiz-Woodley follows her ghost hunter dads to Snakebite, Oregon, their hometown, she expects a boring summer full of location scouting for them, and time in her boring motel room for her. However, something is up in Snakebite; teenagers are going missing, including Ashley Barton's boyfriend, Tristan. Ashley grew up in the small town - it's the one home she's ever known, whereas Logan has never felt she had one. The pair of them will turn into reluctant partners in the investigation into the disappearances, but whatever is hiding beneath the surface of Snakebite is more cunning and cruel than they know, and will not give up on its goals easily. I feel like Courtney Gould reached into my head and pulled out so many of the things that make my favourite books and smashed them all together with this book. There are spooky vibes galore with this small town and its secrets; there's excellent representation; there are layers to the mystery and the characters that are so wonderfully detailed and complex; there's one of the most authentic relationships I've read in a book in a long time, and on top of it, it's sapphic. I was living as I read this book, and I'm honestly sad it's over. The plot here is so strong for a debut novel. I didn't see things coming until I was meant to, and the reveal was satisfying and emotional. I never had that feeling of "really? That's it?" that I sometimes get with YA horror/mystery, and I was so pleased with that. But the characters are where this book truly shines the most for me. Everyone was so real-feeling. Everyone had specific motivations and histories and complexities that made them leap off the page. From Logan and Ashley to the main group of adults to Ashley's group of friends to Logan's family at the motel, everyone was so well-written, I wanted to yell. And again, the ✨vibes✨ need to be mentioned. A tiny town in the remote Oregon wilderness where strange things are happening. Wild weather events and a pervading intensity to the environment that gives everything that happens an edge that it wouldn't have otherwise. A creepy cabin on the edge of town. Mysterious footsteps on the roof that stop...just...before...the open window. There was a scene later in the book that just got me so hard. I expected to like Logan more as a character, but Ashley was the one who I ended up relating to more, who tugged at my heartstrings and made me want to give her a hug. Though of course the relationship is important, the two girls' journeys outside of that and how beautifully they move through their different griefs and traumas are just heart-wrenching and, again: so well-written. Seriously. All of it was so well-executed, I just can't. I'm broken. I want to yell about this book to everyone because I love it so much. Perfect for this budding autumn season, and anytime, really.

🍁🍂🍁🍂Alright, since its mid-September, its time for my annual spooky movie reccomedation list! I include ratings, and I can include trigger warnings for any of these films upon request as well! I'm also looking for horror movies to watch myself, so feel free to comment/ask any as well!! So, here we go, in no particular order...🍁🍂🍁🍂
Tumblr media
Fantasy/sci-fi horror:
The Thing 1982 [R]: A group of scientists find a shapeshifting alien underneath the ice in Antarctica, and they just survive as it imitates them. Trust no one. The Thing is one of my favorite movies in general. Its scary, retro, and the special effects are insane. It reminds me of classic Lovecraft, but better. Very terrifying. 10/10
Pan's Labyrinth 2006 [R]: During the Spanish Civil War, a young girl named Ofelia enters a world of twisted fantasy while above, her step-father's brutality causes trouble in the midst of a rebellion. Genuinely a beautiful movie. It's like a fairy-tale, and sometimes you forget it's a horror movie. It's simply magical, but frighteningly real. If you love classic fantasy, monsters, history, and horror, you'll love this movie. 10/10
Alien 1979 [R]: A team on a shipping vessel in soace come in contact with a parasitic alien within the clausterphobic confines of the ship. A classic, and it's still absolutely terrifying. Sharp insight on early 80's consumerism (in more than one sense), and a marvel of alien horror. Its very claustrophobic, tense, and 100% worth watching, especially if you love scifi. 10/10.
Aliens 1986 [R]: Continuing the story of Alien, space marines must investigate a distress signal from a colony, and what they find is more horrifying than they could have imagined. Full of retro action, humorous quips, scares, and plenty of bullet spray, it's a terrifying and fun watch. I enjoyed it just as much as the original, and its just awesome, while being scary at times. 10/10
Annihilation 2018 [R]: After the mysterious death of her husband, a Biologist goes into Area X to discover what horrifying cosmic entity his team found there. Not nearly as good, or accurate as the book (I CANT reccomend the Southern Reach trilogy enough), but this movie genuinely frightened me at points and the setting is simply beautiful. Its clever, creepy, and it's a strange watch. 8/10
Signs 2002 [PG-13]: After strange symbols appear in the cornfields on a family's farm, they must protect each other, and their faith, during the invasion. Love this movie, it's just spooky enough, but outside if the monsters, the people in this movie are what really matter. It's compelling, and a beautiful story. Simply excellent. Plus you'll know where the screaming guy in a closet meme comes from after seeing this one. 10/10
A Quiet Place 2018 [PG-13]: Could you survive a world where making a single sound could spell your death? Monsters decend upon the Abbot family, just as a baby is on the way. One of my favorite movies ever. Its beautiful and ABSOLUTELY horrifying. I think I forgot about eating my popcorn while watching this one. Overall, the desperate survival of the Abbots is heartwarming, but oh so stressful. If you can, PLEASE watch the sequel right after this one. 10/10
A Quiet Place 2 2021 [PG-13]: The Abbots face new challenges as they traverse a devestated landscape, and monsters wait around every dark corner for them. An EXCELLENT sequel. I caught myself actually going "NOOO AAAA" at some points, and its totally a worthy sequel to the scares in the first one. Again, great story, great characters, great cinematography, great message. 10/10.
Coraline 2009 [PG]: Coraline Jones, unhappy with moving to a new house, suddenly finds a whimsical world in a little hidden tunnel inside the house, but she learns the sinister truth behind the candy-colored world beyond the wall. Dont let the stop-motion animation confuse you; this movie is terrifying. A classic from my childhood, and its a treat to watch every Halloween. The Beldam has to be on the list of the most horrifying villains ever. 10/10
Zombies, ghosts, ghouls, and everything in between:
The Haunting 1963 [G]: Based on the novel The Haunting of Hill House, a group of people must stay in a supposedly haunted mansion. Eleanor, one of the women, suddenly believes that the house is talking directly to her. One of the many adaptations of the book, it's spooky, and it's very disturbing, while also having a nice theme. Perfect for setting the mood on a October night. 8/10
Night of The Living Dead 1990 [R]: Survivors take shelter in an abandoned farm house while the undead attack. Can they work together, or let their own prejudices get the best of them? I havent seen the original yet, but I love this movie. Very scary, and its directed by Tom Savini, so lots of good ol zombie gore. Not only that, there's a good bit of social commentary here on racism. The classic was the original zombie film. 9/10.
Dawn of The Dead 1978 [R]: As the undead rise up, survivors take to a shopping mall in order to survive. I don't know how to describe this movie's vibe. It has this weird retro 70's feel, mixed with uncanny horror. It's campy at times, but it doesn't take away the scariness. Very fun in a weird way, and its an on-the-nose satire of american consumerism. 10/10
Train To Busan 2016 [R]: While the world crumbles around them, a small group of survivors must learn to protect each other on a train headed to Busan. Seriously, please watch this one. It's completely unique to any zombie film I've seen. It's scary, but you genuinely care about the characters, and its VERY intense. Love this one. 10/10
Murder and ect:
Scream 1990 [R]: A masked serial killer stalks high school students in middle class suburbia. Its a parody of the modern horror genre, clever and scary all at once. I enjoyed it as a classic and I liked the commentary on how violence with no essence effects people, especially when glorified with horror films. Definitely not for everyone, but its good never the less. 8/10
Wait Until Dark 1967 [NR (I give it a PG-13)]: A gang of criminals looking for heroin attack the home of a blind woman, and it turns into a horrifying game of back and forth between them, until it can go on no longer. Literally one of the best thriller movies ever. Genuinely scary, and genuinely clever. This was actually the first film I saw Audrey Hepburn act in. Super tense near the end, I was biting my nails the whole time. 10/10
The Village 2004 [PG-13]: A rural community is faced with a hard decision as the monsters in the woods leave bloody warnings around their small town. I watch this one every autumn. Its atmospheric, the score is breathtaking, and its a great story. Its beautiful, gently frightening, and its overall a love story. I love this one a lot, even though I know a lot of people didnt like it. Don't go in expecting a great twist at the end, and you'll enjoy it. 10/10
Jane Eyre 2011 [PG-13]: Jane Eyre becomes the governness to an estate, and find a dark secret there. Not necessarily horror, but its gothic and absolutely beautiful. Its the perfect october movie. I love it lots. Nothing hits different than a rainy october day, a cup of chai tea, and this movie playing. 10/10
TV Series:
Stranger Things 2016- [PG-13]: After a child is taken by a supernatural force, the small town community of Hawkins must search for answers and find him before its too late, but as they search, a horrifying conspiracy comes to life before them. I adore this series. Its a love letter to the 80s. Cant reccomend it enough. 10/10
The Twilight Zone 1959-1964 [PG]: A serialized series featuring many different stories ranging from scifi to horror and everything inbetween. Its genius honestly. Each story is compelling, and thought provoking. A great Halloween watch. 10/10
The Walking Dead 2010- (seasons 1 & 2) [R]: A sheriff wakes up from a coma to find himself in a terrifying world of the undead. Its a decent series, at least in the first two seasons! Its pretty scary. Its great if you like zombie movies! 7/10
Over The Garden Wall 2014 [PG]: Two brothers find themselves lost within the world of the Unknown, a place where time is blended together and reality isn't quite right. Ok, real talk here. Its my favorite series of all time. I could go on and on and on about it. If you haven't seen it, please I beg you. Theres nothing like it. Its literally the BEST autumn show to watch. Clever, funny, lightly disturbing, deep, nostalgic...its fantastic. 11/10
So, there you have it. Huge list of horror movies I've enjoyed and actually reccomend. I have seen quite a few more than this (Halloween, Dawn of the Dead 2004, Nightmare on Elm Street, ect), but I specifically picked out the ones I love the most. Enjoy! And have a great autumn.

Hide by Kiersten White
"She doesn't know him, but she knows that when someone screams, LeGrand runs toward it. And she doesn't. What else would anyone ever need in order to weigh their worth?"
Year Read: 2022
Rating: 3/5
About: Fourteen contestants are competing for prize money in a high-stakes game of hide and seek in an abandoned amusement park. All of them desperately need it to escape troubled pasts or kickstart stagnant careers, but Mack is sure she can win. After all, hiding is the reason she's still alive and her family isn't. But as days pass inside the park and more contestants vanish without a trace, Mack and the others realize that something far more sinister is going on. They aren't playing for prize money; they're playing for their lives. Spoilers are under the cut. I received a free e-ARC through NetGalley from the publishers at Random House/Ballantine. Trigger warnings: character death (on-page, graphic), parent/child/sibling death, suicide (on-page), cults, gore, guns, severe injury, sexism, classism, homophobia, ableism, racism, slurs, grief, guilt, self-loathing.
Thoughts: The concept of this book sounded so creepy to me, but something about it fell short in the execution. I'm having a hard time pinpointing exactly what it was because, individually, there were things I liked about it. There are quite a few characters who are just there for body count (and giving two of them the same name is unnecessarily confusing in a book that already has too many characters), and most of them are varying shades of self-centered and unlikable. However, the ones we do get to know are vivid and sympathetic, with a kind of found family vibe. Mack is a somewhat dubious hero with a clear save-herself-first mentality, and I liked watching her break out of that over the course of the novel. Ava, a disabled war vet, is a badass that I'd totally want on my team, and LeGrand turns out to be surprisingly complex and with a harrowing background. A couple others stand out here and there, but the development varies a lot depending on how much (or how little) time we get to spend with them.
I think what hurt this novel the most for me was that I figured out the plot twist before they ever reached the park. Books don't usually hinge on their shock value for me, but a lot of the reveals fell flat when I could see them coming. There's a lot of spooky atmosphere in the deserted, mazelike park, which I found more effective than the actual threats. I was never very frightened by any of it, and the way characters have to be still and quiet for long chunks of time while they're hiding drags at the pace somewhat. I was more invested once they started to figure out what was going on, and it's got the usual amount of White's righteous anger in it to make things interesting. The message is a tad heavy-handed for an adult novel; I don't think readers need it spelled out quite that blatantly or often, but I get where it's coming from. It's a fun read, but not something that's likely to stick with me.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS. TURN BACK BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.
It's difficult to talk about a lot of this book without venturing into spoiler territory, so let's start with that plot twist. I can't help it, okay? I've seen a lot of Supernatural! As soon as they were describing the small town perfection, my mind jumped right to "Scarecrow." Sorry, but nothing stays that pristine without some human sacrifice going on. The actual monster leaves something to be desired in its vague descriptions, and I never got a clear picture of it in my head. The real monsters, of course, are the humans, and they make for effective villains. I very much enjoyed the slow burn of Mack and Ava's relationship as well, and I was going to be distressed if one of them died, although it was really obvious that Ava didn't. It's a rule of horror that if you didn't see it happen on page/screen, it didn't happen. It's a satisfying ending, and I'd happily read a sequel about Mack, Ava, and LeGrand taking down a cult in their spare time.

A Joey/Henry lockdown fic - AO3
Rated: T
Words: 7k ish
CW: RPF, covid, far too much pining?
_______
“I’m sorry, Joey,” Madeleine sighed again, pressing her head into the crook of Joey’s neck, her hair tickling his cheek.
It was pulled back into a messy bun, flyaway strands surrounding her face in a halo, and as the sun shone from behind her, she looked like some kind of angel. Joey wondered, not for the first time, how he’d even been so lucky to have Madeleine as a friend. She truly was a wonder, his favourite person and light of his life. Everyone should have a friend like Madeleine Hyland.
He laughed and pressed a kiss to her temple as he pulled back from her embrace. “Nah, it’s alright, Madeleine. Your parents need you, much more important than little old me.”
“Oh fuck that, you bastard, stop fishing for compliments,” she laughed, swatting him on the arm.
“Aww,” he pouted, “Oi!”
She’d hit his arm again, barely a tap but he pretended it hurt, rubbing his arm and pouting even harder at his friend.
“Come off it, Joey. You’re staying with Henry for the rest of lockdown, that’s hardly a trial,” she teased, poking him in the chest.
Ah yes.
Henry.
The bane of Joey’s existence, mostly because of the fucking ginormous crush he had on his co-star. He hadn’t known Henry had been signed on for Geralt until his audition, really he hadn’t known much at all, just that he’d be auditioning for a bard and that he should probably take his lute to the audition. A spur of the moment decision that had turned his life upside down. He’d gone from a nobody to... well, not exactly famous but people had started to recognise him, much to his despair.
And then there was Henry.
He’d been admiring Henry from a distance for a few years now, watching him in the Tudors had sort of been Joey’s bisexual awakening, and then he’d suddenly been thrust into the most bizarre experience of having to work fairly closely with the man.
Joey would never forget the feeling of Henry throwing him over his shoulder as if he wasn’t almost the same size as Henry.
Fuck, that had been hot.
And now, Joey had to cohabit with said crush for an indeterminate amount of time, preferably without making a fool of himself.
He was doomed.
Of course, he could have said no when Henry had offered his place when Joey was grumbling about being alone during lockdown after Madeleine's parents got sick, but no… Henry had stared at him with such shining hope in his eyes that Joey never stood a chance.
Joey just needed to keep reminding himself that Henry was straight. He was practically the poster boy for heteronormative; classically gorgeous, action star, gymrat, lover of sports and building fucking computers.
Okay, maybe Joey was generalising a tad, but it was a form of self-defence.
Christ, the mere thought that Henry could be interested in men… interested in him.
It was too much.
So here he was, saying goodbye to his best friend whilst waiting for his biggest crush to pick him up. Madeleine bundled into her car with the last of her bags, and Joey was left waiting on the pavement. In all honesty, he would have preferred to drive to Henry’s place himself or at least get the tube, something where he felt like he was actively doing something. The waiting was killing him, making his thoughts run out of control. Maybe he shouldn’t have packed his guitar. He could have at least been tuning it, or plucking out some meaningless melody, anything to keep his hands busy and his mind distracted.
When the black car pulled up, Joey let out a sigh of relief before realising that it was very much frying pan, fire. Luckily, before he could really start to panic, the back door opened and Joey was almost bowled off his feet by a large bundle of fur that Henry claimed was a dog and not, in fact, a bear.
“Kal!” Joey greeted warmly, burying his fingers into Kal’s neverending fur, and letting the dog lick all over his face.
“He’s missed you,” Henry called in lieu of a greeting.
He was wearing a grey henley that looked like it was two sizes too small and his dark blue jeans seemed to strain against his quads. Henry’s arms were crossed in front of his chest and he looked down at Joey with a blinding Hollywood smile that made Joey’s heart flutter. Dark curls seemed to have finally recovered from the weeks stuck under Geralt’s wig and they fell in front of his so very blue eyes.
He was bloody gorgeous, and it wasn’t fucking fair.
So Joey did the only logical thing, and started to coo at Kal instead. “I’ve missed him too,” he trilled happily into the dog’s fur, scratching Kal behind his ears. “Such a good boy! The bestest, cutest doggo.”
“He’s not the only one who’s missed you, you know,” Henry groused, although when Joey looked up, he was still smiling so Joey didn’t feel too bad for paying far more attention to Kal than the gorgeous specimen of a man that is Henry Cavill.
“Aww, you sap,” he chuckled. “Well, I still haven’t forgiven you for those cruel and terrible words you cursed me with the last time we met.”
It wasn’t the last time they’d met. They’d had a few scenes after the argument in episode six. Scheduling had meant that it wasn’t filmed entirely in order, and then there had been reshoots and post-production parties, premieres and the table reads for season two, but it was a sort of in-joke. Joey liked to tease Henry about the argument, they’d both lurked enough online to know that ‘the mountain’ was a big fucking deal to the fans of their characters.
Henry rolled his eyes and opened his arms out for a hug which Joey eagerly returned, inhaling the soft musky cologne that Henry wore and enjoying the strongs arms that wrapped around him. He loved hugs, but most of Joey’s male friends would do that god awful hug and pat thing, then pull away too soon. Henry had never been like that and it was delightful, even if it really didn’t help the not so little crush that Joey had on the man.
It was cliche but it really did feel like coming home.
Fuck.
He was utterly screwed… and not even in the fun way.
The drive to Henry’s place was quiet, Joey spent most of the time watching the streets of London roll past as they weaved through bendy roads that webbed across the city. The traffic was weirdly non-existent, a side effect of a global pandemic, and he couldn’t help but be reminded of the ghost towns from films and books.
It was truly haunting, spooky in just the right way. Horror and the Wild had very much had woodland magic vibes, but driving through the dead streets of London, Joey wondered what happened to the fae when a city sprung up near their home. Did they adapt like the wildlife did? Urban spirits that lurked in the shadows, in the alleys, behind the bins and cobbled streets at the back of theatres.
Most theatres were supposed to be haunted, Joey had always wondered just who the spirits were that glided through the aisles when the shows went dark.
Henry didn’t feel the need to fill the silence which Joey was grateful for. On set, with Jaskier on his fingertips, Joey was happy to joke about and laugh and banter, but he was nervous about the move to Henry’s and the silence gave him time to get lost in his own imagination, a reality that wasn’t quite the one they knew.
He was almost disappointed when the car pulled to a stop in front of a rather grand house. It was part of a terrace but that was unsurprising, most places in London were, but it was much nicer than the shitty little flat that Joey shared with Madeleine.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
They were poles apart. Even being friends was unrealistic. How the hell was Joey supposed to even pretend they were in the same league? It was fine. Everything was going to be fine. Joey just had to be a perfect house guest, no clumsy mistakes, no setting fire to any ovens, and no slipping in the shower and messing up his ankle.
He’d just have to spend all his time with Kal lest Henry find out just how much of a walking disaster he could be.
Henry had only offered because he was a caregiver, selfless and kind in everything he did. He would have done the same to anyone else if they’d mentioned spending lockdown alone. Joey was just the lucky one.
Or unlucky.
He hadn’t quite decided yet.
Yes, he would just have to spend his days with Kal and his guitar, stay out of Henry’s way and then everything would be fine.
Right?
___
Joey’s plan went according to plan for almost an entire week. He mostly kept to his room and occasionally the living room. Henry wanted to show Joey some films he liked and it would have been rude to say no, so Joey curled up with Kal on the floor to keep some space between them. That way he wouldn’t be tempted to snuggle up against Henry’s chest the same way he did with Madeleine, only it wouldn’t be the same because Madeleine was his best friend and Henry was… well… Henry.
It was such a mess.
And he was probably being an arse.
They’d gotten along so well on set in between takes, but now, without Jaskier there as a crutch, Joey’s anxiety was getting the better of him, and all because of a stupid crush. This would all be a lot easier if Joey were straight; no awkward crushes, no pining for a man he couldn’t have, no… whatever this was?
He could flirt and tease and banter just like he would with any of his friends because it was harmless.
If only.
No.
He had to do better. The reason Henry had invited him to stay was so neither of them would be alone, and despite all his cuddles with Kal, Joey was really starting to feel touch starved. He’d never gone so long without human touch.
The problem was that Henry was just so fucking sweet. He was so bloody understanding that it made Joey just yearn even harder. There was never any pressure to hang out, just gentle suggestions, and the most amazing home-cooked meals that Henry said could be heated up another time if Joey wasn’t hungry. The wine Henry picked out to go with the meal was heavenly, and fuck, the man could cook.
He felt like he was being seduced; wooed with the most gorgeous culinary delights that were truly to die for.
What was a poor bisexual to do?
So every evening Joey would sit across from Henry at the table, trying to joke and laugh just as they had before, but even to his own ears it felt flat. Madeleine’s voice in his head reminded him that that was probably his anxiety speaking but, of course, he ignored it. They ate their food and then Joey would either retreat to his room with his beloved guitar or Henry would suggest a film.
Until Henry decided enough was enough.
Joey was lured from his room with the sweet delicious smell of pizza, and when he came down the stairs he found Henry already on the couch, two boxes of pizza and a couple of beers already opened and ready to go.
There was no sitting on the floor, not with pizza and a Kal. Joey wouldn’t get to taste the greasy wonders of his takeaway if he sat on the floor, and the pizza box was already being guarded by Henry on the couch.
He had to break his rule.
Fuck.
“Kitchen table not good enough?” he teased with a quirk of his lips.
Henry scoffed. “Who eats pizza at the table?”
It was a fair point and sighed, resigning himself to an evening pressed up against his friend when his cuddle instincts got too much. Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad thing, maybe it would help get him out of his head and into the moment… maybe he should just let Jaskier out of the box and pretend that all was fine?
No.
He could do this. Just… be himself?
“Before I open this box, there is one very important question I have to ask,” he said far too seriously, barely able to hide a smile as he scooped the pizza box into his lap and sat down next to Henry, keeping a safe distance between them.
“There’s no pineapple.”
“Oh thank fuck for that,” Joey laughed and opened the box. It was a standard pepperoni pizza, not his go to, but it was a safe option and one that was always yummy regardless of the restaurant. “Garlic dip?” he asked with a cock of his head.
“Damn, I hoped you wouldn’t like it,” Henry grumbled and pulled a small green topped tub from inside his own box.
“You!” Joey said in mock outrage, “keeping the beloved dip from me. It’s like the mountain all over again.”
“It’s not like the mountain,” Henry grumbled. “I didn’t make the script, you can’t keep blaming me for that.”
Joey’s heart sank as he wondered if he’d taken the joke too far, but when he met Henry’s gaze he saw the man was smiling despite his grousing. “I can,” he insisted.
“Hmm,” Henry replied in his most Geralt-y voice.
And with an internal sigh of relief, everything seemed to be okay. Yes, Joey was pulling some of his energy from his beloved character, but so was Henry, and it seemed to smooth out the edges of his anxiety. The beer helped and everything seemed a lot more relaxed with the takeaway pizza and the film already starting to play on the TV.
“I’m sorry,” Henry whispered after the pizza was finished and the credits had started to roll.
Joey’s head was resting on his friend’s shoulder but he’d managed to keep himself from koala hugging… so far. The vulnerability caught his attention though, and he sat up wearily to peer at Henry.
“For what?”
“I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable by inviting you here.”
Joey wanted to swear, to stomp around the room and tear the place upside down. He’d fucked up. He knew he’d fucked up, his damn anxiety keeping him from being the person he wanted to be, the person he knew he could be if his head just shut up! He didn’t do any of that though. Instead, he slumped back down to lean against Henry and took a deep breath.
“You didn’t make me uncomfortable.”
“I didn’t?”
“No. I’m just- it’s hard for me, being somewhere new,” not a lie, not entirely the truth, “and I didn’t want to encroach on your space. This is your home, and I- umm- I didn’t want to get in the way.”
Henry laughed, running a hand through his hair, pushing the curls back off his face, and Joey was entranced for a moment, wanting to reach out and feel the soft hair between his fingers for himself. It was a miracle that he managed to keep his hands in his own lap.
“Joey, this is our home, for now at least,” Henry said with such conviction and warmth that Joey made a sort of strangled noise in the back of his throat.
“Our home?”
“We have no idea how long this nightmare is going to last. It could be months, Joey. I want you to feel like you can relax here,” Henry insisted, wrapping his arm around Joey’s shoulder and pulling him into a sideways hug.
“Right- yeah, no, I know,” Joey mumbled, trying and failing not to blush.
Now that Henry wasn’t really having to watch what he ate and stay dehydrated for dear old Geralt, he was big.
And Joey was weak.
It was like all his wet dreams were becoming a reality, one by one.
He was just monkey-braining over the fact that Henry was one big, large, strong man that wanted to take care of him. It was pathetic. Joey wasn’t exactly small himself, and he could, should the role require it, hold up pretty well in a sword fight with Henry and not look entirely ridiculous.
“And I know Kal is very cute,” Henry teased, nodding to the dog who was sprawled on the carpet in front of them, “but if you ever need a hug, he’s not your only option.”
Joey definitely didn’t squeak this time. Instead, he finally let himself snuggle up to Henry the way he’d been wanting to all evening, every evening since he’d arrived. “Like this?” he teased.
Henry chuckled, and just squeezed his arms tighter around Joey, “Exactly.”
“I’m sorry,” Joey mumbled. “I was being an arse.”
“No, it’s not your fault.”
Joey scoffed.
“I should have been clearer on day one,” Henry sighed, “although seeing as you live here now, maybe you should cook?”
Joey laughed nervously, burying his face into Henry’s jumper. “Neither of us want that,” he muttered. “Trust me.”
“I’ll help?” Henry suggested, which of course brought forth a dozen images of cooking together, dancing in the kitchen to whatever songs fell past Joey’s lips, lazy early morning kisses as they waited for the coffee.
He swallowed, blinking away the fantasies. “How about you cook, and I’ll help?”
“Lazy,” Henry said with a chuckle but just pulled Joey closer.
“Only trying to keep you safe, darling.”
Darling.
Fuck.
“I mean, Henry, sorry, slip of the tongue. I mean- fuck. I call Madeleine darling all the time?”
“Joey, it's okay,” Henry reassured him.
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
With a sigh, Joey untangled himself from Henry’s arms and gathered up the pizza boxes and empty beer cans. Booping Kal on the nose as he went past, he busied himself with clearing up. It wasn’t much and didn’t take long, so sooner than he would have liked he poked his head back around the door.
Henry was sitting on the floor, rough-housing Kal, chuckling as the dog kept licking at his face. The sight made Joey smile softly, and he almost didn’t want to leave, but he was getting tired and he really didn’t want to slip up again. He couldn’t blame every mistake on Madeleine. It wouldn’t be fair to her.
“I’m going to bed,” he mumbled, scratching the back of his hair. “See you tomorrow, Henry.”
_______
After that, things started to get easier. Joey would flop down onto the sofa next to Henry in the evenings regardless of what they were doing. Sometimes he’d lie with his head in Henry’s lap whilst they both read a book, other times he’d pluck at his guitar and laugh over stupid limericks that he could make up about his co-star. True to his word, Henry made Joey start helping with mealtimes, although he soon regretted that decision but refused to back down. The food still tasted good but the presentation was lacking. They spent an afternoon trying to bake bread together… Joey’s did not turn out so well and Henry’s attempt was thankfully less than perfect but still edible. The little flaws made Joey feel a little less inferior, and made Henry seem all the more human.
Kal still got a lot of Joey’s attention. How could he not? He was just so fluffy and adorable, plus Joey loved the little pout that Henry did whenever Kal got more hugs than he did. Joey could pretend that his friend was jealous, and that just helped him sleep a little easier at night.
Cuddling on the couch had become their usual routine, and it settled something deep inside of Joey that had been becoming restless. Mornings were spent watching Henry workout. Joey joined in occasionally but usually he would just cheer Henry on from the sidelines sipping his cup of tea. It was a sight to behold, and Joey thanked the lord that the gyms were currently closed otherwise he would never have been allowed to enjoy the view.
Henry’s arse was truly spectacular.
Despite his morning workouts, Henry had definitely gained a rather lovely layer of fat over his previously tightly toned muscles. He looked stronger. He looked cuddlier. Joey’s crush was only getting worse by the day, wanting to run his hands over the broad muscles of Henry’s back, thighs, arms… wherever he was allowed, but he just settled for the cuddling each day.
Joey tried not to think about the fat building over his own stomach and filling out his cheeks, barely noticeable unless you’d had a lifetime of his mother breathing down his neck about his weight. He was cuddlier too, that’s what he told himself whenever the familiar buzz of anxiety started to build up.
And anyway, Henry didn’t seem to mind.
Kal certainly didn’t. The beast of a dog had started to share the sofa with them in the evenings, squishing between them for maximum cuddle potential until eventually he got bored and retreated back to the floor.
It was really starting to feel like home. There were signs of Joey around the house, sheet music left on the TV cabinet, a set of spare lute strings in the kitchen, the bastard instrument tucked away in the corner of the living room until Joey could bring himself to pick it up. Two sets of keys now hung up by the front door so they could both take turns walking Kal without having to worry about getting locked out if the other was busy. A fluffy worn blanket was now strewn over the big armchair where Joey liked to sit during the day. Even the fridge now stocked Joey’s favourite rosé wine.
All in all, Joey wasn’t hating lockdown. It was frustrating but he enjoyed being inside anyway, and well, the company was pretty great.
The two of them were curled up on the sofa watching the Great British Bake Off on netflix, gin and tonics flowing a little too freely, and Joey felt like he was on top of the world. He had the best cuddler in all of England, nay, the world, a big fluffy puppy to boot and some bloody brilliant booze in hand.
The best thing was that Henry’s hoody had shifted up at some point during the evening, and Joey couldn’t take his eyes off the soft but defined muscles that were often hidden under Henry’s clothes. The dark hair that dipped beneath the exposed band of Henry’s boxers was tantalizing, and Joey longed to reach out and touch…
Only he was drunk enough that his inside thoughts had his hand moving before he could realise, landing on Henry’s stomach.
He froze and stared up at his friend with wide eyes.
“Oops,” he slurred.
“That’s my stomach,” Henry pointed out.
And still Joey didn’t remove his hand, relishing the bare skin beneath his fingertips, but he knew he needed an excuse, so he did the only logical thing and launched his attack. Henry was stronger than him, but Joey had the element of surprise as he tickled his friend, fingers dancing across the exposed skin as Henry desperately tried to shove Joey away. They were both laughing, too busy pushing and pulling at each other, that neither of them quite registered that at some point in the tussle, Joey had straddled Henry’s waist in an attempt to keep him pinned down.
Until suddenly their lips were barely a breath apart.
Oh.
“Hi,” Joey mumbled, smiling coyly down at Henry, the longer strands of his fringe falling into his eyes.
“Hi.”
It wouldn’t take much to lean down and kiss him, maybe Henry would even reach up first. There was no denying the sudden pull between them, and god, Joey wanted it. He’d wanted it for so long now.
So close.
The warmth of Henry’s breath brushing against his lips.
Eyes closed.
Hearts racing.
A soft whisper of a moan.
And then a bark rang out in the room, startling Joey and shattering the moment. He cursed as he fell to the floor, the world spinning from the gin and giddy burst of adrenaline. Kal jumped up into Henry’s lap, barking and whining excitedly at his owner, checking that he was okay following Joey’s tyrannical tickle attack.
Joey felt like an ice bucket had been dumped over his head, feeling far too sober, far too fast.
He’d almost kissed Henry.
He’d almost kissed Henry.
Fuck!
“Right,” he slurred as he pushed his hands back through his hair- too long, needed a haircut. “Bedtime, sleep. Yup.”
“Joey?”
“See you in the morning?” he mumbled, although glancing at the clock, he wondered if that was a little optimistic. “Tomorrow,” he amended.
“Tomorrow,” Henry agreed, looking a little disappointed.
Joey refused to think about it. He wouldn’t start to hope. It would hurt too much if this all went wrong.
______
They didn’t talk about it.
Or rather, Joey, didn’t talk about it.
Henry tried to bring it up the next morning but Joey just laughed it off before his heart could get torn to pieces. He didn’t need confirmation that his crush was a no go. He already knew, but he really didn’t need to hear the words. Not to mention his hangover was an utter bitch and all he wanted to do was crawl back into bed and feel sorry for himself, which is exactly what he did.
After a few days, or was it weeks, months, years? Time seemed to stop existing, all Joey knew was his clothes seemed to be tighter than before and he was in desperate need of a haircut, but after a lockdown-eque period of time, all was forgotten. They fell back into their usual routine, and Joey’s crush continued to simmer just below the surface, unnoticed by Henry.
He’d started to facetime Madeleine most evenings just before bed now that the novelty of living with a bloody filmstar had worn off. He missed her terribly and she seemed to be going crazy at her parent’s house. There was a twinge of guilt stabbing in his chest when he realised he’d all but forgotten about her the first few weeks of lockdown, but it was nice to catch up with her again.
Henry was brilliant, but he was no Madeleine Hyland. He wasn’t Joey’s best friend.
And sometimes Joey just needed to vent about Henry’s stranger habits. Like seriously, why wass there that weird sponsored water just stationed around the house? And what was with the weirdly staged selfies on instagram. It made Joey feel a whole lot better about his own lack of media presence. He’d rather be a mystery online than this boomer energy than Henry had going on.
Venting to Madeleine helped too, he got less frustrated about the shit hole that was life during a pandemic. A little less angry, a little less depressed, and a little less pathetic with his pining over Henry, although Madeleine would probably disagree.
She was probably right.
The sudden cold turn in the weather hadn’t helped. It wasn’t too bad but Joey had mostly brought summer clothes with him because he honestly hadn’t thought he’d be staying more than a couple of weeks. Thankfully he’d thrown in a couple of onesies for comfort reasons so he spent most his days dressed like a tiger and hoping that Henry would find it endearing. The best part was his onesies were a bit looser and fit him more comfortably than his normal clothes. A lockdown diet was brilliant, but not exactly what he’d had in mind when he’d gone shopping all those years ago.
What he hadn’t expected, was for Henry to rock up to dinner wearing the stupid bunny onesie that Joey had left in his room.
“There,” Henry greeted him with a broad smile, “Now we match.”
It wasn’t fair. Joey wanted to kiss him so badly. The white onesie was a little short on Henry, pulling up just above his ankles, and it still managed to stretch at his shoulders, but it was so fucking adorable and Joey could pin point the exact moment his crush tumbled over the edge into love.
It was the crinkles at the corner of Henry’s eyes as he smiled, the slight tilt of his head, the sparkle in his ocean blue eyes.
Except they weren’t just blue. No, there were specks of golden brown in one eye, that were just captivating. Joey felt like he could so easily get lost in Henry. Every time he looked at the man he found something new and exciting.
“Darling, you look adorable!” he cooed, before he could get too distracted by the fluttering of his own heart. “Very cuddly.”
Henry chuckled and opened his arms wide, allowing Joey to barrel into them. “That was the idea.”
“So, what’s for dinner?” he asked, hoping that Henry would have forgotten that-
“It’s your turn to cook.”
“Bugger,” Joey whined. “Cheesy pasta?”
“You made that last time,” Henry teased.
“I’m very good at carbonara!” Joey countered.
“Melted cheese on pasta isn’t carbonara.”
Joey scoffed. “Eh, close enough.”
“Fine, make your cheesy pasta.”
“Carbonara,” Joey said with a wink. “I’ll add bacon this time.”
The pasta was overcooked and the bacon was a little chewy, but it was dinner, and afterwards Henry made them both extravagant hot chocolates made from actual chocolate rather than powder shit that Joey used. It was covered in whipped cream and marshmallows and had a healthy amount of Baileys to top it off. They curled up on their usual spot on the sofa, buried under blankets and held the warm mugs close to their chests.
If it had been snowing, then Joey would have thought he’d walked into a Christmas film, all it needed was a fireplace and some fairy lights. It was cosy and warm, and a little bit romantic, or it would be if Henry was interested in men and Joey was his type.
No, he couldn’t think like that.
They were friends, good friends, good friends that liked to cuddle and almost kiss if the dog hadn’t interrupted.
It was fine.
Everything was fine.
He took a long gulp of his hot chocolate to stave off his anxiety, not noticing when his nose dived straight into the whipped cream until he looked up to find Henry staring at him with a fond expression. Warmth flooded through Joey’s chest as he returned the smile, feeling high on love and sugar.
“Hi,” he breathed, sounding as love sick as he felt.
Henry’s smile brightened, filling the whole room with light and Joey could have sworn he could hear the swell of violins in the soundtrack of his life.
“Hi,” Henry replied easily as if he hadn’t stolen Joey’s breath, heart and soul. “You- umm, cream, here!”
Henry tapped his own nose.
“Oh cock!” Joey hurried to wipe his nose, almost spilling his hot chocolate in the process, “Fuck! Bugger, shit balls!”
Henry, the bastard, just laughed, his arms reaching out to steady the mug and stop Joey from falling to the ground. “I think you made it worse.”
Joey snorted “I got that, yup, thanks.”
This time he could feel the sticky sweet cream clinging to his cheek, the subtle taste of vanilla on his lips. He pouted up at Henry, gazing through his eyelashes in a way that he hoped could be played off as friendly, but also maybe a little bit seductive. His tongue flicked out to lick his lips and he barely resisted the urge to wink.
Maybe there had been more Bailey’s in his drink than he realised.
Instead, he just wiped his face and snuggled back up to Henry, pulling the blanket up to his chin. They settled on watching Always Sunny, so Joey didn’t really have to concentrate. He let the tension drain from his body as he listened to the familiar TV show and then closed his eyes. Warm, happy and wrapped up in the arms of the man he loved-
Joey fell asleep.
He didn’t notice the way Henry was staring down at him as if he hung the fucking moon and stars, or the inner turmoil his friend was plague with as Henry resisted leaning down to kiss Joey in his sleep.
No, Joey was blissfully ignorant, sleeping better than he had in weeks.
________
The rest of lockdown went by in a blur. Their routine started to seem normal and any doubts Joey had about spending so much time with Henry faded away. They bantered easily like they had on set, laughing and giggling over whatever stupid thing one of them had said. Henry would spend hours playing his video games whilst Joey zoomed Madeleine to work on their new album together. When the regulations relaxed they started to walk Kal together, enjoying the quiet summer days and fresh air. The cuddling never really stopped, and some mornings Joey would wake up still curled up against Henry’s chest, their limbs tangled from the night before.
Those were Joey’s favourite mornings. He’d be stiff all day from sleeping on the couch but he could pretend, for just a few moments, that things were more than they were.
The pining never went away but it was truly the sweetest torture that he’d ever had to endure. The domestic bliss being barely a step away from everything he craved.
And when the time came for Joey to return to his flat with Madeleine, he felt like shit. He didn’t want to go. He wanted to stay in the strange fantasy world he had with Henry, eating too much food and drinking too much wine, cuddling and watching crappy Netflix shows.
Which was why he was sat, staring at a messy pile of clothes on his bed, clothes he’d not worn in weeks. Over the chair were his onesies and a collection of jumpers and hoodies that he’d stolen from Henry over the last few months and weeks. Kal stared up at him from the floor, tail thumping against the carpet.
Joey sighed and ran his hand through his hair, trying desperately to ignore the ache in his chest that was growing more painful with everything second that passed. “I don’t know, Kal. I should be happy about going home.”
Kal didn’t respond, his tail still wagging away just like it always did whenever Joey paid attention to him.
“I miss Madeleine, of course I do, but living with Henry has been great. And you, I love you, big fluffy puppy!” He cooed with a big smile as Kal barked happily and jumped up onto the bed. Joey laughed as he tried to keep his face away from the attack, wrapping his arms around Kal’s neck and pressing his nose into the fur.
“If I tell him how I feel that’s just going to make season two really really awkward, but I just feel like I’m missing a chance, you know?”
If Kal knew, he either didn’t care or just enjoyed watching Joey suffer. There was no reply and Kal just rested his head in Joey’s lap.
“Yeah, right,” he muttered, still running his fingers through Kal’s fur. “You’re no use.”
Kal snorted at that and Joey rolled his eyes.
“But I love you anyway, yes I do!”
“Ready to go?” Henry asked from the door.
“Shit!” Joey yelped. “How long have you been standing there?!”
Henry chuckled, striding into the room and perching on the bed opposite Joey. He reached out to scratch Kal on the head with a dazzling smile. Joey felt his cheeks warm up and he buried his face in Kal’s fur to hide the blush. So many months and he still couldn’t stop his heart from racing whenever Henry smiled. He was pathetic.
And he was running out of time.
He knew it was a bad idea, even entertaining the thought of dating a co-star, but he’d regret it if he didn’t give it a shot. I mean he could always blame the mixed signals if it went wrong. They’d nearly kissed twice and Joey didn’t even cuddle Madeleine as much as he’d cuddled Henry. They were probably the only people that were less touch-starved during the lockdown than before.
So Joey was going to tell him.
Just three words.
He could do that.
Fuck!
He couldn’t do that.
“Joey?” Henry said, reaching out to squeeze Joey’s shoulder.
Joey blinked. Had Henry been talking to him? He’d asked a question so that would make sense. God, his anxiety had gone through the roof, it was like that first day all over again.
“Need to pack,” he mumbled, gesturing at his clothes.
Henry let out a long and heavy sigh, sounding just as thrilled about the idea as Joey did. “I suppose you do, yeah. When is Madeleine due over?”
Joey hummed, glancing at his watch. “Ten minutes ago. Lockdown traffic must be a thing of the past.”
“Pity.”
“Yeah.”
“Yeah,” Henry sighed.
Neither of them moved, both staring glumly at Kal who was happily nestled between them. It was strange but Joey had almost begun to think of Kal as his, theirs. Their home, their life, their dog. He would miss Kal very much.
He would miss Henry even more.
“Do you have a start date yet?” Joey asked, the restrictions were lifting and there were talks about getting back to work again, but it was all up in the air.
Henry shook his head. “Should be getting a call from my agent some time this week. I need to make sure my other projects can work around the schedule.”
Joey smirked, “Or my dear witcher will have a new face next time we meet,” he teased.
Henry scoffed. “Not a chance, you’re stuck with me, bard.”
“You still owe me an apology,” Joey shot back, not quite realising how close they’d gotten during their mock argument.
He swallowed and licked his lips, one hand reaching up to scratch the stubble on his cheek. His face was burning right up to the tips of his ears, his heart thumping in his chest. There was a spark of electricity crackling between them, the scent of coffee lingering on Henry’s breath.
“I’ll make it up to you,” Henry promised, voice hoarse and low, making heat spread through Joey’s body and the world around them seemed to disappear.
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” Henry breathed, the words shaky.
Joey longed to reach out and brush his fingertips along the strong line of Henry’s jaw, to feel the scratch of stubble beneath his skin. He longed to tangle his hands in the dark mess of curls, to see if they were really as soft as they looked. It felt as if there was a magnetic force pulling them closer, a string tying their souls together, binding them as one. Joey couldn’t ignore even if he wanted to, and he was over that. He couldn’t live inside his head any longer, not when there was a chance.
Hope.
Deadly, poisoning his very soul, until he could think of nothing except Henry’s lips on his, hands roaming bodies, pulling at hair, unable to resist the promised pleasures of sin. Tongues tangling. Hearts singing. One breath shared between two. Heat. Lust. Love.
Just Henry.
His love.
Joey closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against Henry’s, their lips barely ghosting over each other, you really couldn’t call it a kiss; not yet. One more breath, a millimetre to close the gap.
A horn honked from outside and they pulled apart before they could cross the bridge, past the point of no return.
Joey let out a slightly manic laugh and ran his hands through his hair, whilst Henry went back to stroking Kal as he cleared his throat.
“Bollocks, I still haven’t packed.”
“I’ll invite Madeleine in for some tea,” Henry chuckled, stretching as he stood up.
Kal barked happily and jumped down, wagging his tail as he sniffed at Henry’s socks.
And Joey was left alone once more.
“Fuck!” he groaned, covering his face as he flopped back onto his pillows.
By the time he finished packing, Madeleine and Henry were laughing away in the kitchen like old friends.
Like Joey and Henry had so many times.
He wasn’t special. Henry was just that guy.
Hope.
Dangerous and lethal, stabbing into the heart and tearing the soul apart.
“Ready,” Joey mumbled, holding up his suitcase and guitar. “Might take a couple of trips, I have another bag upstairs and the damn lute.”
“Not sure I ever heard you play the lute?” Henry teased.
“Yeah well,” Joey grumbled and turned away from the kitchen before he could start crying.
He really really didn’t want to cry in front of Henry. What was a little heartbreak between friends? At least he could channel that into Jaskier whenever they finally got back onto set. God, he was a fucking mess.
“I’ll help you,” Henry volunteered because of course he would. He probably just wanted Joey gone sooner.
The poor bloke probably couldn’t wait to have his own space back without Joey’s inedible attempts at cooking, non-stop music and chatter, lazy slobbish evenings in front of the TV.
He wasn’t going to cry.
He wasn’t.
Fuck!
Joey sniffed and stumbled out the door, his hands gripping his suitcase so tight he thought he might break the handle. Back home with Madeleine, to his life, and his bed, and nights spent drinking too much wine and lurking on social media.
He’d just about managed to throw his suitcase into the boot when he heard a loud bark behind him, followed by Henry grunting. Joey was almost knocked off his feet as Kal bundled into him, circling around as he jumped up, winding the lead around Joey’s body and pulling a poor Henry with him.
Not that Joey was particularly complaining about having Henry pressed up against him, but did it have to be when he was crying?
Henry cursed, struggling to keep hold of the lead. Their faces were close and they had to wrap their arms around each other to keep steady. Joey laughed through his tears, reminded of a similar moment from one of his favourite Disney films.
Only Kal was a lot bigger than a Dalmatian.
“I don’t think he wants you to leave?” Henry said, smiling sheepishly.
Joey smiled back despite his broken heart. “Doesn’t look like it.”
“I- I don’t want you to leave either,” Henry whispered so quietly that Joey wasn’t sure whether he’d heard it at all. “I- umm, I like having you here… with me.”
“Oh,” Joey replied stupidly.
“Fuck, I- Joey… Can- can I kiss you?”
The world turned upside down. Joey's heart stopped and everything started to spin. He tried to process the words but nothing seemed to make sense. There was no fucking way that Henry had said that, that he wanted to- wanted to…
Fuck!
“Oh,” he repeated, blinking at Henry as he licked his lips. “I mean. Fuck. No, I mean… Christ. Yes. Please. Yes.”
Henry chuckled and cupped his cheek, pressing their lips together in the most tender of kisses, taking Joey’s breath away right there on the pavement. Joey just giggled when they parted and then swooped back in for another kiss, and another-
And he never wanted to stop.
He didn’t need to breathe, he just needed this; Henry’s lips on his.
Henry had other ideas though, pulling away with a blinding smile.
“Stay with me?”
Joey nodded and threw his arms around Henry’s neck. “God, yes.”
And then they kissed some more. They had months of lockdown to catch up on, after all.

Hey I trust your judgement/taste in podcasts, so could i bother you for some podcast recs?
Oh my goodness I feel so honored to be asked for podcast recs this is so sweet!
Secondly however, I am a little bit of a fraud at the moment I have not been listening to a bunch of new or even old ones, but I will give a list of my personal favorites. I think I’m gonna try to refrain from bigger name ones, just cause those are pretty well known around tumblr but there are so many I love so it’ll be fun to choose.
Let me know if you listen to any of them and if you liked them!
1. Midst- this one is AMAZING. the story is about three intertwining people’s lives in a fantastical western/space setting on a planet in the middle of a vast galactic empire. the story is so creative and wild but the soundscaping and the way the three narrator’s voices intertwine is so good, absolutely recommend. i don’t want to talk to much about the plot because its a little convoluted but i will list some things you will find in season one (light monsters, shadow demons, a man with an upside down mouth, a poisoned glove, an adorable 11 year old artist, an old western cabaret, evil rocks, space bureaucracy and MORE)
2. The White Vault- deliciously scary and creepy. This is a horror podcast that works around the conceit of forgotten things left at the cold ends of the earth. each season is a found footage (audio?) compilation of what different exploratory teams left behind and the mystery that unfolds is so scary and haunting. this one is fun because the teams are international and not only are the actors actually from the countries their characters are from, their language is woven into the narrative in ways that you don’t usually see in media
3. Unwell- another spooky creepy one about a mysterious town in southern ohio where nothing is as it seems. the story follows lilly (a bi racial lesbian woman) as she moves back to her estranged mother’s boarding house to take care of her as she recovers from a broken foot. she starts exploring more and realizing that this town is hiding a lot of secrets, some normal (they have a celery soda festival every year) and others...not so much. this one is lovely because it blends real life, real world problems with the supernatural and its very refreshing and new. the first season is based in summer but the second one takes place in autumn so its the perfect time to listen!
4. Brimstone Valley Mall- do you yearn for the long lost year of 1999? Do you think tripp pants are the height of fashion? are you goth? if so this podcast is for you. in Brimstone Valley Mall in the south central pennsylvania region four demons are searching for their lost friend and band leader because without him, they can’t play at the Y2K apocalypse party being thrown in hell and Satan will be EXTREMELY disappointed. this one is so incredibly funny and irreverent and very high energy, just a fun one to listen to. i will say it is pretty raunchy so if you’re not into that it might not be for you.
5. Midnight Radio- Short and bittersweet, this ten episode radio drama follows the perspective of Sybil McIntyre a radio show host in the town of Dawn Arbor in the 50′s as she unravels the mystery of some letters that keep showing up from a longtime listener. This one is another perfect one for fall as Sybil’s poetic love of her town comes out as she describes the apple festival, the leaves falling, and childhood adventures. This one is a bit sad, as it explores loss, love and moving on, but sometimes you just need that catharsis. And remember, all ghost stories are love stories.
6. Death by Dying- Oh to be a small town, obituary writer in Crestfall Idaho, investigating deaths and writing about them in his passionate, eccentric way. The humor in this show is top notch, I’d equate it to a Lemony Snicket kind of vibe and the side characters are snarky and fun. This show also deals with the topics of grief and moving on and how death is something different to all of us. (Also the Angel of Death is Wife Material). This show is short (only 5 eps), but there should be more coming out sometime!
7. Vega: A Scif Fi Adventure Podcast: This one is fun. I would equate it actually, to Midst which I mentioned earlier, as its told from an omniscient narrator perspective who has a great sense of humor. Vega is basically a secret agent in a futuristic city (the culture she’s a part of greatly african based) and she’s the greatest at her job. She’s smart, strong, confident, suave, loves her family and doesn’t play by the rules of the stuffy council, until something goes wrong. There have only been a couple episodes released so far but they have started coming out again so the full season should be released soon!
This got really, really long so I will just list a couple more before I go
Kalila Stormfire’s Economical Magic Services - a young witch tries to make it on her own in a city, but a mysterious saboteur is making it harder and harder
Harlem Queen- a fiction podcast but about a real person, a numbers queen who lived in Harlem and was one of the most powerful women in 1920′s New York
Stellar Firma- Space Shenanigans!! Improv comedy at its spaciest
Inn Between - your classic DND podcast but with a twist. Instead of all the battles, its all the things that happen after at a little inn called The goblin’s head
The Hotel- a horror podcast about hotel that eats you and the creepy staff that work there
the six disappearances of ella mccray- Ella disappears and her six friends and family members are trying to find her, if the strange changes that are happening to them don’t get them first
Phew! I hope you enjoy some of these or at least try some out! Good luck and thanks again for asking!

September 1: 3x06 Spectre of the Gun
Okay so, it might be a little early to declare myself a S3 apologist, since there are still a lot of eps I’ve never seen, but I feel like I’m pretty close..
This ep was so good!! Honestly I think it’s one of my faves. And perfect to usher in Spooky Season.
Honestly, this show really is my happy place. Just all the characters together on the bridge, on some kinda adventure, looking at weird space buoys and investigating stuff.
Again, this buoy looks like a Windows 98 screensaver.
Kirk keeps referring to Spock as “Science Officer.” Is he mad at him? Full of some particularly intense longing that requires him to put extra distance between them?
Excuse me, you address US as aliens? YOU’RE the aliens.
Hmmm, so it seems they’re not friendly.
It’s addressing them in different languages!!! I love it. Love the reminder that Uhura’s first language is not English, also.
“True telepaths are dangerous.” As opposed to fake telepaths like Vulcans lol?
The Melkotians withdrew immediately. They invented space travel, they saw space, and they said “not for us” and they turned around and left. McCoy would like them; they’d have a lot to gripe about together.
The welcome mat is NOT out.
“Unlike Mr. Scott’s transporter, this unit is not functioning.”
It legit looked like Spock put his hand on Kirk’s back there. Like he clearly raises it, but not far enough to be seen above Kirk, so like.. what was the point? Where did it go?
LEE CRONIN--oh no, flashbacks lol.
“We come in peace”--immediately pulls out gun.
I should have watched this when writing my Western fic.
Just bits and pieces of a Western town... and a completely red sky...
The guns are “crude but dangerous.” If only Sulu were here; he’d love this.
An announcement with a specific time and place on it--that’s a very precise detail to just pull from their minds. Must have come from Kirk’s, that nerd. Maybe Spock. But probably Kirk.
“Because my ancestors pioneered the American frontier.” I mean did they really get to the frontier? Or just... the Midwest?
Maybe it’s actually because he’s a cowboy at heart?
Aliens using his own ancestral sins as the pattern for his own death for breaking their law IS a great (possibly partially unintended) idea. Oh also, if they think that Kirk and co. are here to ‘tame’ or colonize them, then the Western setting makes even more sense--you’re no different from your ancestors, you came somewhere new and brought lawlessness and violence and death, but not this time!
Can you believe Kirk knows all of these details about the OK Corral? NERD.
Spock is so proud of himself for knowing the phrase “had it out.” Look, I used slang correctly!
These are some creative aliens.
“We know death is real here.” Or is it? They’re literally telepaths guys.
Hmmm, this building doesn’t need a roof I think. - The aliens probably
Can’t believe Scotty thinks his usual is his actual usual lol. You’re going to drink bourbon and like it!
Kirk and Spock look so good together.
They’re obviously Chekov’s disapproving parents.
“The day is still young, Ensign.” I don’t remember the exact context of this but Spock is SO judgmental.
What is Kirk doing? This guy is a hallucination; he won’t be convinced by touching some cloth. There’s nothing to convince! He’s only a Concept.
“Have you seen clothes like this?” / “Yes.” / “Where?” / “On the Claytons!” Comedy gold.
Kirk really thinks he can charm his way out of anything. Hmmm, maybe if I just talk nicely to the Earps, they won’t kill us.
“In small amounts, it [bourbon] was considered medicinal.” Lol.
Scotty is becoming a bourbon guy!
“Mr. Chekov is inVOLVed” lol. Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
“A lot of people and things have tried to kill me.” No need to brag.
THAT’S how you make a city limits sign. Put a dead animal skull on top. I live quite close to a city limits sign and I think it could use a cow skull.
Western Cossacks!!
Poisonous snakes and cactus plants. That really distills the Aesthetic down to its core.
This is a good Kirk episode. He’s really being a good Captain: coming up with different ideas, being creative, pushing his crew to brainstorm.
Bones and his tranqs again.
Bones meets his old nemesis: Old Timey Medicine.
Why was Doc Holiday just...chilling in his own dentist chair? (My mom suggested: power nap. Let’s go with that. Power nap + ability for optimally dramatic entrance.)
Also I can’t believe McCoy just goes into this guy’s practice and starts helping himself to all the serious drugs.
Chekov definitely isn’t the marrying kind.
RIP Chekov.
Bones does not sound very sympathetic here. Jim, get over it, he just died, whatever.
And then two seconds later he turns around and tells Spock he’s not sad enough! You can’t win.
“We all knew the risk when we joined the service.”
“My feelings are not a subject for discussion.” !!!!!!! This line!!
“You worked closely with him.” Yes! Chekov is his protege!
“Bones, Scotty, stop bullying Spock.” <-- not an actual quote but it might as well be.
If this were AOS, Spock would already be choking Bones out.
Whoops, no one told Chekov he wasn’t supposed to die!
“Let’s organize! Let’s form an anti-Earp union!”
“I can’t kill them!” he says in a mad rage.
I mean, it is important, though. That’s not what he does.
Kirk is /disgusted/ by lawlessness and frontier justice. What a Rebel TM.
I feel like Bones was waiting for the gotcha moment when Spock compliments him. “Saying nice things about me? That’s not how this relationship works!”
“Nothing can go wrong.” / “Up to now, everything has gone wrong.” He has a point.
That pause before Spock admitted it hasn’t been tested lol--they don’t want to admit it.
“[The bourbon’s] for the pain.” / “But this is painless.” / “You should have told me that before.” The unexpected comedy stylings of Scotty and Spock.
It doesn’t work--guess Spock’s got to take back that compliment now.
“Captain, you don’t understand--they’ve been telepaths the whole time which we already knew!”
“We’re not going to move from the spot.” * is immediately in a different spot * Well I mean at least he’s trying. He’s doing his best!
Love the OK Corral sign also. Weirdly creepy. With its accompanying horse.
Spock doesn’t have any hips for the holster to rest on.
“What did Chekov die of?” / “A piece of lead in his body.” That would do it.
If the tranquilizer should have been effective, does that mean Scotty is actually passed out right now?
Honestly, this is all so spooky. TRUE Western Horror Ghost Vibes.
Also very trippy. If you don’t believe it... it’s not real... some kinda weird chicken and the egg argument regarding our belief in the truth of physical laws idk but it sounds good. Spock brings it home.
Even with the wind whipping around him, Kirk is SO in love. His absolutely adoring expression... So soft...
“Very well, Sir, I’ll meld with you again. Not that I particularly want to. It will be a sacrifice. But I’ll manage. Even though you’re such a dynamic individual haha ha I’m fine I’m cool.”
I feel like Scotty is NOT into the mind meld. He looks terrified. Maybe he should have saved the bourbon for this occasion.
I know the mind meld is supposed to be a replacement for on screen hypnotism...but is this not hypnotism? Like even more than past uses? In this case, Spock is leaving them with suggestions that he wants to continue AFTER the meld, as opposed to, like, efficiently sharing information or giving immediate suggestions. And the scenes themselves are very creepy and...hypnotic.
Kirk’s patented move: WHOLE BODY ATTACK.
Well, we wrapped that up right quick.
Did they... never actually leave the bridge? Or even navigate past the buoy? This actually brings up a lot of questions as to when the aliens started the hallucinations, what their bodies looked like to the rest of the crew, and how they woke up--since there’s obviously been a bit of a time skip, as Bones is already examining Chekov.
Lol at Chekov, saved by horniness. “Nothing but the girl was real to him.”
“A vast alliance of fellow creatures who all believe in the same thing...”
Kirk’s vision of the utopian future is so powerful, he’s effectively gotten the welcome mat put back out.
A personal question? Kirk is intrigued.
Ah, but it’s just another excuse for Spock to be a hypocrite--how did humans survive? How did VULCANS survive? And for the show to remind us of its utopian vision of the future... we will move past violence, we will prove ourselves attractive to and worth of new alien friends.
Then McCoy walks out so Kirk and Spock can have their Moment. He undoubtedly knows what’s up.
So this ep was shown one day before the anniversary of the shootout at the OK Corral AND on Halloween week. It is very much a spooky season episode. So surreal and strange. Ghostly.
I know using sets rather than on location shoots, and not even building whole sets, was a budgetary issue but tbqh I think it worked in the ep’s favor. It added to the alien feeling of it and was an accidentally creative way of showing that these images were pulled from Kirk’s mind.
This felt like a very Classic S1-ish ep to me. I think it’s because Kirk was foregrounded as the Captain/hero and we get to see not just his intelligence and creativity and leadership but also his compassion and his moral core. He IS the values of the series, personified, and that was clear here.
But we also got to see lots of him and Spock, casually working as a pair, and the use of the rest of the landing party crew was very deft also. I loved that there was time to mock Chekov’s horniness, to talk about Spock and Chekov’s professional relationship, to joke around with Scotty, to show more of the Spock and Bones dynamic.
Again, great sci fi concept. I think this would have been another possible inspo for my Pirate AU if I’d seen it in time (although I think I picked a good mission-concept ultimately). I’m fascinated by the Melkotians: who are they? What do they really look like? Do they communicate any other way but telepathically? Are they corporeal? What is their planet like? And most importantly, what experience lead them to be so isolationist? They specifically refer to the aliens as “disease” coming into their home. And it’s when Kirk shows himself to be fundamentally nonviolent even in the face of his own death, they let the Enterprise through.
Basically, I always enjoy hints of alien societies that bring up more questions for me than answers. I love speculating about it.
The next two eps I’ve seen and remember well and I know they’re classics. I’m really looking forward to them!

Sunday Audio Drama Recs!
Tumblr media
Happy Sunday from Team Vanishing Act! Here are four more shows we love that we think you will love too!
1) Death By Dying: This show is an all time Hall of Fame favorite round these parts (these parts being our hearts? I guess, idk, lost the trail of that metaphor). Death By Dying is about the Obituary Writer in a small town, and every episode is centered around an obituary he is writing (or will write by the end of the episode). There is literally nothing we don’t love about this show, from it’s dark, wry tone to its hilarious worldbuilding to its genuine creepiness to its ability to turn on a dime from silly to genuinely melancholic and deeply touching. There are so many memorable characters (the Button-Eyed Raven, the Slapper, Pastor Jeff) and bits (the apricot battle in the town market, OW’s immaculate fashion sense, Gert, the line “he wasn’t the talk of the town, but he was the talker of the town”) Over the course of the five main-plot episodes it goes on a truly, insanely well-crafted journey with one of those tone shifts in the last act that feels at once like a huge twist but also inevitable and right. It reminds me so much of Over the Garden Wall in its final episode and I mean that in the best way possible--spooky and dark but also oddly comforting, existentially sad but also life affirming and hopeful. This show means a lot to us here and we hope you’ll give it a shot. Find them @deathbydyingpod
2) Windfall: Alright it’s acton-adventure time, y’all! This show has it all: a full, sweeping instrumental score; a sprawling large-cast fantasy/sci-fi action adventure vibe; reluctant, flawed, morally grey heroes; saying “fuck capitalism”; intricate, lived-in worldbuilding; some of the best voice talent out there; etc etc etc. The show takes place in the nation of Windfall--ever since a castle appeared in the sky, the city has been built upward towards it rather than out, and in a sort of vertical Snowpiercer move, the wealthy live further up, with the poorer classes down below. Our protagonists are a series of “grounders” who get tangled up with the business going on upstairs when one of their own is recruited into the military police (the Wolfpac), creating ripples among our cast that force them to decide where they stand. It’s a grand adventure in every sense told incredibly well--the writing on this show is some of the best you’ll find out there in audio drama and it’s executed in a fantastically immersive way that I hope will sweep you away like it did to me. (Not on tumblr, but find them on twitter here.)
3) Palimpsest: Gothic, atmospheric, psychological anthology fiction fans, this one is 100% gonna be for you. The first season of Palimpsest tells the story of Anneliese, who records an audio diary as she moves into a new house after a breakup, still dealing with the death of her sister--the story is very much a slow burn tale of Anneliese being haunted by the memories of the house, but also bringing her own haunting to the house. Horror stories like this need to be threaded so carefully--they have to keep that slow simmer at just the right level to feel like it could bubble over at any moment, and they have to know when to let it loose. Palimpsest knows what its doing, and rest assured you’re in good hands--trust these fantastic creators. As mentioned, its an anthology series, with a different setting and protagonist each season (season two is set in the 19th century, season three during the Blitz in London), with a common thread connecting them all, so choose what appeals to you! (Not on tumblr but find them on Twitter here.)
4) The Magnus Archives: I almost definitely don’t need to sell this here, it’s fantastic and has deserved love and acclaim--but we do love it and want to shout out what we love about it! We started listening around Halloween of last year and shot through two seasons in a very short period of time. If you want that perfect marriage of horror anthology and overarching slow build narrative, this is really the perfect example. The first season eases you in to the general concept with one-off stories of various people’s experiences with the supernatural entities, which they report to The Magnus Institute--these reports are read aloud by the Archivist, who we get to know personally as time goes on and he becomes less and less skeptical and more and more entangled with said supernatural entities. You, the listener, start to slowly hear commonalities, you hear names come up that you’ve heard before and recognize similar experiences from subject to subject, and the show trusts you to piece these together yourself early on, to be an active part of the narrative alongside Jon. It makes it feel like such an interactive, immersive, addictive experience, and you want to keep listening because you don’t want to lose track of the threads you’re connecting. Even when you don’t know the characters who work for the Archives that well yet, the stories are genuinely scary (the cave diving episode in particular is true Nightmare Fuel and an excellent stand-alone horror story), and when you do get to know them, it’s even scarier because you care about them getting caught up in this terrifying world where there are no rules of fairness and true evil runs free. (Also there’s a whole meta-narrative about how it feels to be a millennial stuck in a job you hate that actively seems to be set out to kill you in horrible ways and it. is. RELATABLE.) (Don’t think they’re on tumblr, but find them on Twitter here.)
If you love these shows, please consider leaving them a review on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser so they can get the word out to more potential listeners!
Previous recommendation posts: one, two, three, four, five, six.

Julie’s incredibly aesthetic incredibly autumny list of movies that she maybe recommends:
Alright! Hi there!
My name is Julie, and I really love fall. I love hot tea, warm blankets, candles, ghost stories, fog and I really, really love rain. I never get tired of any of the aspects of fall, but I think the easiest way to really soak up the atmosphere (aside from amazing books, which I don’t really have the time for), is movies! Here, “autumny” movies.
Tumblr media
But that’s a really vague term, and I think many people have a very individual idea of what a fall movie is, that don’t really line up with mine. So the most obvious thing seems to me, to make one myself.
Tumblr media
I’m guessing one, maybe two or three people will see this, and I count myself as one of them. The others (hej Sif og Malin!!) might not even get to read this, but if they do, I hope they like it. I hope you like it, Malin and Sif! Also, I love you! And miss you!
Right. I’ve seen a lot of examples of the “list of movies to watch in the fall/autumn”, and they’re all fine and great, but I guess I’ve never been completely satisfied with them, as I mentioned.
Tumblr media
So after like 10 minutes of research, I’ve made up my own list, of movies I thought seemed interesting or just plain cozy and nice. I admit, they aren’t ranked, sorry, and I haven’t watched all of them, so a good deal of these will really just be mentioned because of optimism. Also, I don’t think there’s a lot of scary ones, so don't worry.
Tumblr media
And I promise I will mention if they’re very spooky. I’ll put a warning like: “Warning! Spooky!”, at the top or something. That should do it.
Lets get started! :-)
1. Practical Magic
Tumblr media
This first one I actually saw some years ago, with my mom, when I was much younger. I liked it, but I have a feeling I will like it even more, if I watch it today. A really classic halloween, witchy movie, that was surprisingly touching in the family aspect!
Tumblr media
Official synopsis:
Two witch sisters, raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town, face closed-minded prejudice and a curse which threatens to prevent them ever finding lasting love.
//Not very spooky, as I remember it. But good! Lovely witchy aesthetics!
2. Silence of the Lamps
Tumblr media
Ugh, I love this movie! That might be a not so good thing to say, it’s really twisted. But I like how creepy it always is, no matter how much i watch it, and how the twists and turns never fail to be interesting, even though I know the plot by heart now. I love Clarisse, I love the foggy, grim nature of the movie, and I don’t really love Hannibal, he’s creepy, but you can’t deny that Anthony Hopkins really carry this movie! Perfect serial killer acting. If that’s a thing.
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
A young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.
//VERY spooky! Or just plain scary. Sif - do not watch!! Many people are killed in many, gross ways.
3. Witch
Tumblr media
Haven’t seen this one! I really want to, and have since it came out, but there haven’t really been any (legal) places to see it. I love the tension that was present even in the trailer, and the whole aspect of an oppressed young girl evolving and breaking free in the scariest way possible is really interesting. Not all horror movies are my thing, but I really hope this one will be! And I love everything about witches, so.
Tumblr media
Official synopsis:
A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic, and possession.
//Warning! Just from the trailer, I can conclude that this one is very scary.
4. Julie and Julia
Tumblr media
This one I haven’t actually seen either! I think I’ve spotted among my mom’s dvds, but nope, haven’t seen it. I don’t really know a lot about Julia Child either, but it seems like a super-heartwarming film, so I hurried to include it!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
Julia Child's story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with blogger Julie Powell's 2002 challenge to cook all the recipes in Child's first book.
//This one seems safe.
5. The Addams Family (Both of them are good!)
Tumblr media
This one, the “first” one, I saw last year. It’s actually a remake of an older movie, which is apparently based on an even older comic -who knew? And there’s a second one, following this one, I might add later. But tt was so good! Gah! I loved it, and I’m definitely rewatching this year. Wow the whole vibe of this family is fantastic, and I wish more families in movies were as dedicated to an aesthetic as the Addams! Watch it! It’s so nice!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
Con artists plan to fleece an eccentric family using an accomplice who claims to be their long-lost uncle.
//I know it seems scary, but trust me, it’s fine! It’s really more funny than spooky. You’ll enjoy it, trust me!
6. Hocus Pocus
Tumblr media
Alright, never seen this one! But when I joined tumblr, the americans were always bringing this one up, and it’s always included in those lists I was talking about earlier, and again, witches, so a no-brainer for me, to include on this list. Man I can’t wait to see it, I hope I’ll like it.
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.
//I have no idea what the spooky-level is in this, but it doesn’t seem that bad.
7. Halloween (the original)
Tumblr media
I have wanted to see this in FOREVER! It’s such a classic, and a really iconic, classic, older horror movie. I don’t actually know why I haven’t seen it yet, it might only be because there was no place to watch it, the last time I checked. I hope it has changed, I really want to see it. It has all the classic tropes, and a scary serial killer, it really is a peak-halloween movie. Spot-on name, huh!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.
//Might be a bit too scary for some.
8. The Princess Bride
Tumblr media
This is so good!! All the characters are straight of a fairy tale (literally), but they’re neither flat or boring. And the love story! Ah! I loooove it! I really enjoyed it last year, when I watched it, so I understand why it’s become such a classic. And there’s so many iconic lines in this movie. The whole mood of it is such good, and the plot isn’t the craziest thing, so watch it to relax!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
While home sick in bed, a young boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.
//Not scary, fret not!
9. The Craft
Tumblr media
Have never seen or heard about this movie, until the morning, when I compiled this list. I kind of want to though, now that I’m promised 90′s teenage witches. Hell yeah! The more witches the merrier!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
A newcomer to a Catholic prep high school falls in with a trio of outcast teenage girls who practice witchcraft, and they all soon conjure up various spells and curses against those who anger them.
//No idea how spooky. Might be a little scary.
10. Sleepy Hollow (the one with Johnny Depp)
Tumblr media
The legend of the Headless Horseman is famous, so that one I know. But this movie, which is based on that story, I haven’t seen. I can guess, though, the vibe from it’s original source material, and Johnny Depp and the male lead, and that makes me want to watch it! Also, how can you not, when you see all that fog?? So spooky and mysterious! I love fog!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of three people, with the culprit being the legendary apparition, The Headless Horseman.
//Might be, like, ghost story-spooky. Or Tim Burton-spooky. Either of those. Hm. I don’t think it’s that bad?
11. Scream
Tumblr media
I LOVE SCREAM. SUCH AN ICONIC HORROR MOVIE. THANK YOU FOR USING ALL THOSE CLASSIC TROPES!! I love everything about this movie, and I might actually put it on when I’m done with this post, and watch it with a cup of tea and some popcorn if I can find some. The characters are delightfully flat and simple, what you see is what you get, and that actually makes this movie even better! It really feels like you’re watching THE halloween movie, it’s delightfully creepy and spooky, and I love it all. So. Much. Also - the lovely 90′s aesthetic is very much present in this one!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.
//Spooky! If serial killers are not you thing, don’t watch it. Not that it’s my thing either, but, uh, if watching characters be chased and killed off by a masked individual really freaks you out, stay clear of this one :-)
12. Dark Shadows
Tumblr media
Love this movie. Watched it in the cinema, have it on DVD, have watched it numerous times since, and I always enjoy it. Another Depp-movie, and he really pulls it off in this one, as a creepy but also weirdly funny vampire, who has lost his one true love, and wakes up in the 70′s (i think), to help his relatives, now living in his ancestral home, with getting back on their feet. A lot of wild stuff happens in this movie, and I adore it.
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
An imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection.
//Actually not that spooky! It’s not that bad, I think. Some places are a little scary, but there’s enough of humor present, that it should be fine!
13. Eve’s Bayou
Tumblr media
I had never heard of this movie until this morning! But wow! It looks so dramatic and promising, doesn’t it? We will just have to see, I guess!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
What did little Eve see--and how will it haunt her? Husband, father and womanizer Louis Batiste is the head of an affluent family, but it's the women who rule this gothic world of secrets, lies and mystic forces.
//I have no idea. Really. I hope it’s a little bit spooky!
14. Clue
Tumblr media
I have just played the game, sorry. And I enjoyed that, so I hope I will enjoy this too! No, I know I will, I love these stories, with really defined characters, like when someone is named “the soldier”, or “the socialite”. I’m sold, when stories like that are introduced to me. I really want to watch this movie! Also - young Tim Curry! Cool!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
Six guests are anonymously invited to a strange mansion for dinner, but after their host is killed, they must cooperate with the staff to identify the murderer as the bodies pile up.
//Nah. You’re good, with this one. Don’t worry.
15. Every Agatha Christie Movie
Tumblr media
Yeah, sorry I want to watch every single film adaptation of her stories, and love them dearly. None of them can be bad, to me. But the only one I have watched, is the “Murder of the Orient Express”, and if I have to describe how much i love this one, this list will go on for much too long. I just really love this movie. I love the characters, I love the scenography, I love the choreography, just - Everything! It’s so pretty, and you will NEVER figure out the ending! I didn’t, at least. Watch it! It’s so good!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
When a murder occurs on the train on which he's travelling, celebrated detective Hercule Poirot is recruited to solve the case.
//Don’t worry about spookyness - there’s none! But watch it!
16. Twilight
Tumblr media
Perfect Autumn vibes! There is darkness, fog, rain, coldness, weird pale vampires, a nice love story - and most of it is out in a forest! Amazing! This whole movie seems to consist of only blue and green tones, in varying degrees of darkness, and I always sit with the feeling, that i can almost smell the rain and damp earth in these scenes. Great movie! Even greater use of atmosphere!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
Bella Swan moves to Forks and encounters Edward Cullen, a gorgeous boy with a secret.
//Not spooky!
17. Knives Out
Tumblr media
Saw this in the cinema with my brother! I really love the main characters, and the plot is great too - I couldn't figure it out at all! I think it is a very creative, “new! approach to a murder mystery, and I applaud! Very autumny, very great sweaters from the female lead! Actually most of them have nice clothes, for this crisp, cold mystery movie!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
A detective investigates the death of a patriarch of an eccentric, combative family.
//Not very spooky! Don’t worry!
18. 10 Things I Hate About You
Tumblr media
I watched this when i was like, 12, and definitely didn’t appreciate it. I think it based on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”. It’s one the best Rom-Coms I’ve ever seen! The dialogue is funny, the acting is fine, and the love stories are very cute! Also, I just adore Kate, like, in general! She’s so sour and surly! Watch this one, when you want to unwind and relax! Maybe with your friends. Or alone, that’s cool too!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
A pretty, popular teenager can't go out on a date until her ill-tempered older sister does.
//Not spooky, lol.
19. Mona Lisa Smile
Tumblr media
I haven’t seen this one, except for the very last few minutes, on evening when my mom and I was zapping channels. So I have very little, very confusing knowledge of this movie, based on an ending, with no context. But my friend told me about it once, and wow, it sounds heartwarming! And Julia Roberts is pretty great, normally!
Tumblr media
Official Synopsis:
A free-thinking art professor teaches conservative 1950s Wellesley girls to question their traditional social roles.
//Not spooky!
Tumblr media
Well then! That was all the movies I had the time to compile this morning! I might add more, I’m sure there’s a few classics, I have forgotten!
I hope you have a great fall, with many chances to be with your family and friends, and experience all the amazing things this read, yellow, brown and orange season has to offer! Have a great day - and thank you for reading!
Tumblr media
- Julie :-)

Spookiest Middle-Grade Books For Halloween
There’s something very special about books that set you up for a cosy ride and then take a dark turn. I find that most middle-grade horror and supernatural books do this and the clever offsetting of places that should be so familiar -schools, family homes and small suburban towns- can be so unsettling. Whether it’s encounters with spirits, investigating grisly mysteries or fighting monsters, spooky middle-grade books are the ideal whimsical companion to a night in front of the fire. Enjoy my selection! -Love, Alex x
1. Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Tumblr media
When Coraline moves into a new house with her parents, it’s not long before she discovers a door to a world that perfectly mirrors the one she came from, only things look ever so slightly... different. This incredibly creepy macabre and wonderfully written story is an October staple for me and its the perfect introduction to dark fantasy for children. The film is one of my favourites of all time, so be sure to watch that after you’ve read it!
2. The House With A Clock In Its Walls by John Bellairs
Tumblr media
When orphan Lewis goes to stay with his uncle Jonathan, he has no idea that he’s about to discover that both Jonathan and his neighbour Mrs Zimmermann are magic wielders. Through a string of unfortunate experiments, Lewis ends up unleashing the angry spirit of the evil previous owner of the house who is hell-bent on destroying the human race. This whimsical book was published in the 1970s but it still holds up as strong, dark, magical tomfoolery with a just-scary-enough Gothic vibe, which is perfect for young spooksters.
3. City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab
Tumblr media
Cassidy’s parents have a ghosthunting TV show but it’s Cass who can really see ghosts, including her best friend Jacob who happens to be one. When her parents’ TV show takes them to the haunted streets of Edinburgh, Cass comes face to face with a less than pleasant mission and a deadly threat. Coated in a mist that dawdles on every page, Schwab’s middle-grade novel is a fantastic ghost adventure story, full of darkness and friendship.
4. Small Spaces by Katherine Arden
Tumblr media
When the bus breaks down on the way back from a school trip to an old farm, the driver warns the kids that they’d better run. Only Ollie and two of her friends heed his warning and enter the dark woods, flanked by scarecrows...  It has a wonderfully disturbing, folksy, rural vibe and Arden is a master at conjuring an ominous unseen presence. If you weren’t afraid of scarecrows before reading this book, you will be after!
5. The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste
Tumblr media
Fearless Corinne finds herself following a suspected jumbie into the forest and the next day, she spots a strange woman in town. When this strange woman begins to get close to her father, Corinne learns an ancient magic to try to stop the jumbies from taking over the island. Drawing on Haitian folklore, this is a wonderfully unique tale of threat and magic that thoroughly transports its readers.
6. Crater Lake by Jennifer Killick
Tumblr media
When a Year Six class turn up to a deserted Crater Lake activity camp, the extra-terrestrial horrors are only just about to begin and no one is getting any sleep. There is a lot of humour in this book, which juxtaposes the bizarre, horrific events that are happening and it makes for the perfect light-hearted, sci-fi horror story. Indulge in a quick fix of alien madness alongside a fantastic band of characters.
7. The Hungry Ghost by H. S. Norup
Tumblr media
When Danish-born Freja arrives in Singapore to spend the summer with her father and stepmother, she is just in time for The Hungry Ghost festival, the time of year where spirits can roam amongst the living. Suddenly, she is seeing and spending time with a mysterious ghost girl who seems to have a connection to her family. Set against a stunning backdrop, this is a beautiful new novel, full of mythology and Asian culture as well as a compelling story and fantastic characterisations.
8. The Creakers by Tom Fletcher
Tumblr media
When Lucy wakes up one morning and all of the adults in her town have vanished, she’s a little confused to say the least. All the kids are causing chaos but Lucy just wants to find out what really happened. The Creakers have other ideas though... Full of imagination and intrigue, this is a mystery novel like no other. The Creakers serve just the right amount of creep to unsettle you and it’s dotted with smile-inducing moments. It’s the ideal Halloween read for the younger end of middle-graders.
9. The Haunting of Aveline Jones by Phil Hickes
Tumblr media
When ghost story lover Aveline spends some time at her aunt’s house in a small coastal town, she uncovers the key to a long-buried mystery. A tale of friendship, tragedy and spook ensues. Hickes is great at developing a brooding, unfeeling atmosphere and this haunts every page of his book. I did cry at several parts  because it is such a beautiful, chilling read. Wrap up warm for this one!
10. The Ghost of Gosswater by Lucy Strange
Tumblr media
When Lady Agatha is thrown out of her family home, she has to make a new life for herself in a small cottage while dealing with the fact that a stranger may be her real father. But a ghost girl is haunting the local lake and she could hold the answers as to who Agatha really is. Set in 1899, this Gothic ghost story is thoroughly compelling, incredibly eerie and expertly written in an almost poetic fashion. A fantastic reading choice for a Halloween night!

Top 10 Netflix TV Shows to Binge during Quarantine & Chill
To help out my fellow friends in lockdown and so you don’t have to put up the standard Instagram story asking, I’ll be doing a quick countdown of my top 10 tv shows available on Netflix that will hopefully help you all pass this monotonous time.
This goes without saying but I’m going to say it anyways: all opinions are my own and as admittedly these are all very popular shows please feel free to shoot me suggestions to broaden my own horizons!
I’m going to try and create some semblance of order and countdown from 10! So, without further ado…
10. American Horror Story
Tumblr media
Okays, so maybe not one if you scare easily although it’s definitely verging more towards the creepy and uncomfortable side than horror. The good thing about this show is if you don’t like the plot, not to worry because the next season is a completely different ball game with a new story, new characters and probably even a different time period, making the show more of an anthology than a series. A nice little link is the use of the same actors each season and if you look closely, you’ll see the Easter eggs and links between!
It remains popular amongst it’s fanbase and although the initial hype that made me jump on the bandwagon in 2011 has eventually died down it’s still one to check out, if at least just for the first three seasons, if you want something a little strange and peculiar.
https://www.netflix.com/title/70210884?s=i&trkid=13747225
9. Gilmore Girls
Tumblr media
Set in the little dreamy American town of Stars Hollow with fast-talking sarcastic humour and a coffee-loving mother and daughter bond at the centre. This is one for those of us who appreciate many a cultural reference and enjoys many a love triangle. An easy watch with truly engaging characters you’ll be sad when this show comes to an end… but not to worry they do one more season, A Year in the Life, to wrap everything up with a bow.
Perfect for an easy watch about college, boys, and most complicated of all… family!
https://www.netflix.com/title/70155618?s=i&trkid=13747225
8. Prison Break
Tumblr media
A true classic! You’d be hard pressed to find someone that doesn’t consider this show one of the greats. It’s the one your mum’s boyfriend will continue to talk about and recommend time and time again, right? Just me? Well I finally gave in and was caught into the binge that is Wentworth Miller.
We see him play Michael Scofield, a structural engineer who gets himself purposefully incarcerated in order to save his innocent brother Lincoln from death row, with a classic prison escape. If nothing else this show has you on the edge of your seat for the first season and impressed at the continual twists and turns the character relations and plot takes. This is a show you want to see before it is eventually spoiled for you…
https://www.netflix.com/title/70140425?s=i&trkid=13747225
7. You
Tumblr media
Although by show of hands Joe Goldberg is decidedly just Dan Humphreys on steroids, I can’t deny that each Boxing Day that the new season was released it was binged in one day. See Joe fall in love and do anything to keep it. Character driven; monologue driven. Binging this show may have you questioning who’s side you’re on once you’re rooting for the murderer and it’ll make you gasp out loud while doing it.
Just don’t get too attached to any of the characters…
https://www.netflix.com/title/80211991?s=i&trkid=13747225
6. Stranger Things
Tumblr media
With an entrancing 80s vibe aesthetic we centre around the small town of Hawkins and a group of best friends during the disappearance of their friend Will and the appearance of a young mute girl with a shaved head and some peculiar abilities. As the story unravels, we’re brought into the world of the supernatural and government conspiracies based loosely on some very real and very spooky Soviet Union experiments. You may also be thinking ‘hey, these kids look familiar’ and that’s right they’re in every other show with a similar 80s theme (see: IT and I Am Not Okay With This). Oh, and Winona Ryder.
I can see this show climbing the list when I finally get round to watching that last season…
https://www.netflix.com/title/80057281?s=i&trkid=13747225
5. Peaky Blinders
Tumblr media
I’m just going to say it, it’s cool. What gang movie or show isn’t? We see the Shelby family conduct some dodgy business in 1919 Birmingham as part of the gang, the Peaky Blinders (based however loosely on the real Peaky Blinders street gang in Birmingham). Perfect for fans of DiCaprio’s Gangs of New York. Run ins with the law, underhand criminal happenings in the back room of a bar, gang wars. Have I said enough? Cillian Murphy in a suit perhaps?
The only thing that stops this show being further up the list is despite the overall plot being capturing, each individual episode runs slightly slow, although that won’t affect the awe-feeling at the end of each one.
If nothing else you’ll really get off on the fun of saying ‘By order, of the Peaky focking Blinders!’ again and again until you drive even yourself crazy.
https://www.netflix.com/title/80002479?s=i&trkid=13747225
4. Suits
Tumblr media
This one nearly made me change my whole career path and choose law for a degree.
With this show you’ve really got to binge to keep up with the legal jargon but it’s oh so worth it. Mike Ross, an extremely smart college dropout is questionably hired by Harvey Specter, high flying lawyer for a prestigious New York law firm, all while hiding Mike’s secret. And wearing lots and lots of very nice suits.
You’ll be surprised how fast you get sucked into the daily going-on of the law office. Plus, you get to see Meghan Markle (fun fact: who’s real name is Rachel!) pre-royalty vibes. Sleek, sexy, sophisticated, sharp-dialogue and by episode three you’ll be singing the Greenback Boogie and buying your own ‘You Just Got Litt Up!’ mug by the end of the week.
https://www.netflix.com/title/70195800?s=i&trkid=13747225
3. Atypical
Tumblr media
A truly honest coming of age story as Sam Gardner, a teenager on the autism spectrum, attempts to navigate high school, family, friends, love and… penguins? This is one where you’ll just have to trust me and watch to understand.
https://www.netflix.com/title/80117540?s=i&trkid=13747225
2. The Vampire Diaries
Tumblr media
Now we’re getting down to the nitty gritty. Okays, yes, if you’re a regular binger then chances are you’ve already saw this show. This show has been on my favourites list since the day it aired in 2008. The first adaptation ever (it’s the English student in me, sorry) that was better than the book and with 171 episodes it’s the ultimate binge.
Vampires (not the sparkly kind), witches, werewolves and love triangles all clash in the small town of Mystic Falls. Granted it sounds like a chick-flick, but I know just as many boy friends as girls that have got sucked (ha, get it?) into this rollercoaster. This is my number one recommendation to anyone who asks for a new show and I’ll say now what I always say: give this show a go and once you get over the cheesiness of the angsty story-telling from the beginning of Season One, then it’ll be worth every moment.
https://www.netflix.com/title/70143860?s=i&trkid=13747225
1. Friends
Tumblr media
Oh… my… god!
The one where it’s controversial.
You probably love it, hate it or if you’re a culchie then you’re most likely discovering it for the first time (which still baffles me). If you didn’t grow up with this show on E4 nine times a day before Comedy Central stole it then I do feel sorry for you. A truly iconic show and if you truly believe that loving it is not a personality trait then I beg to differ.
Six friends learn about life, family, careers and relationships in New York city.
With 10 seasons it’s the ultimate binge and will always place my number one!
https://www.netflix.com/title/70153404?s=i&trkid=13747225
Netflix Honourable mentions:
Money Heist (Season 1 and maybe season 2, we didn’t really need more after that)
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Because obviously: nine nine!)
South Park (yeah I know, I was against this show for years but recently just caved and #noregrats)
Lucifer (sexy devil, need I say more?)
Rick and Morty (which was originally on the list but got bumped because I’m just watching the same episodes again and again until they’ve lost all meaning now)
I hope this has helped a few people out and cut down the endless hours of scrolling before just watching something you’ve saw time and time again!
Well that’s all folks! Stay safe and happy binging! ✌🏼

Hunterville
There is a residence around here that nobody goes around because a single person is living there; his name is Bruce Parrish. We the townspeople of Hunterville encourage you not to go around the Dead Forest. The reason is that everything is dead, the animals, the soil, the trees, even the sky is dark all the time.
I, Fitz Hester, am a traveler and I stopped at a town called Hunterville. It looks like a normal small town except for one person who was walking in broad sunlight when I arrived at midday. I ask for his name and where I could get a bite to eat at, but when I talked to him, he had a surprised look on his face. I was so confused I asked again. He said, "You are not from here, Are you."
"No sir, I'm a traveler and was just stopped here because I was tired and hungry." When I said that, I noticed that there was a weird vibe around him. If I had to describe it, imagine being in an old forsaken house hearing spooky noises like footsteps, and creaking pipes. After a weird creepy moment standing there looking at each other for seconds. I finally spoke up, "Hello, my name is Fitz, and sir, what would be your nice sir?" It took him a few moments to respond. "Oh sorry, I zoned out there, I'm Bruce, nice to meet you." Well after that he informed me where a good place to eat and I could rest. We also had a meal together. We became friends, at least I thought, but what was mysterious was when we part ways. I stood there thinking this is not that bad of town except for the fact that I only have seen four people in this town. While I was thinking about that I was also watching Bruce walking down the street. An unusual fog came out. Then the fog slowly leaving, I notice that Bruce was not walking down the street that had no allies. He was simply gone.
The next day, I went to eat breakfast and then explored until I founded a forest that is dead. It has the creepiest thing I ever have seen. I have seen many creepy places but this is creepy than the fact there were only four people in this town. Then I notice a sign. So I walk over to it; it read "DO NOT ENTER THE DEAD FOREST." I wanted to go in but when I was about to go investigate the Dead Forest Bruce walked up to me and said: "They're so harsh about this land it's a shame."
"Shiitake you scared me."
"Sorry, I thought you heard calling your name, sorry."
"I'm fine, I was just not expecting for anyone to be around here."
"Oh well, this is my land, and my house is right there." That house was terrifying; it sent a chill down my back. Imagine a castle but in the dark with crows flying around. it has entirely black, you see the color black right now imagine it 10x times darker. I was about to ask him why everything around here having this creepy effort to it, but he spoke before me and said "On a certain day it, not this creepy but it is a lovely place to think about life tho because of its quiet, lonely after my family dead. It's only me who lives here with my cats and two servants. The only reason they are here because they need the money. Otherwise, they would have left a long ago."
"Why was there nobody around when we meet."
"You will see in the future, but right now it's like you want to explore my land. Am I wrong?"
"No, you are right."
Well, we went, and explore the land. It was dark, and um how would you explain it... Let's go with you know those moments when a horror movie killer is about to strike, and you know it's going to happen, well it's like that feeling, knowing you did something wrong but still went with it. We walked all over the land till we got to Bruce's house. It was HUGE!! It looked as tall as a castle and as long as a football stadium. I thought.
"Holy Mother Russia, this is a big house for three people and some cats." We walked to the front door. It was as tall as a small house, Bruce opened it as though it was paper. I tried closing it and I didn't even budge. I meet the two servants. Their names are Jema and Emma, they seem nice and polite. Bruce showed me around, it took five hours to show me around the house. I was amazed at how clean it was for the size of it. Well by the time got done with the tour. It was time for dinner. We went to the dining room and the food was ready to eat. We eat with the servants and it was a quiet and peaceful dinner. When we all got done eating and we started to head our own way. I about to leaving and heading to my room at the inn. But Bruce stop me and said. "Stay here for the night instead of walking all the way back to the inn."
"Sorry, but I got to leave. So I won't be here much longer. I'm leaving in the morning to go home to see my family. It has been three years since I even talk to them. So I'm dropping in and surprise them. Sorry, but I can't stay here tonight." I walked all the back to the inn think the way he offered me to stay there with a very, how would you put it, I guess it would be like a serial killer talking to his prey. I try to put it out of my mind, but I did not put it out of my mind until three days later.
About a month later, I was bout to start another travel trip. I decided to stop by Hunterville again to check it out. It was the same as the last time I was here, nobody was out and about like last time. I went to the inn and to get room to stay again caused been driving all day. I did not get a room because no one was answering. So, I went to the diner where I saw Bruce eating. I went to sit with him and then he disappeared in front of me. If you ever have a person disappear in front of you. YOU WILL NEVER FORGET IT. I thought about it while eating. So, I went to Bruce's house after I was, done eating. The house was still terrifying, I knock on the door, nobody was answering. So, I checked if it was unlocked, by all luck it was unlocked. So I tried as much as I could and I opened the door. I went in and the house smelled horrible. I would describe it as a smell of a dead body that, been decomposing, but I still explore it. I finally come to the last door on the first floor. I open it and I found Bruce. I said "Hey." Got no response so I started walking to him. The room started to spinning and I fell on the floor and I rolled onto my back I saw Bruce, Jema, and Emma standing over saying something that I could not really catch, but I'm guessing, "We finally got him. What do you want us to do with him, boss?" In the deepest voice, I ever heard in my life Bruce said, "*I want him as a puppet. Lock him in the freezer, for now, I got a new puppet I want to play with first."* And then I blacked out. I wake up later, stripped down to a table. I started to panic, and Bruce said, in the same voice,
"Finally awake I see. Good, I thought Jema may have killed you."
" Why are you doing this Bruce."
"Because I like to make puppets but the normal puppet was getting old so I started experimenting with people and found they are perfect puppet material.*"
"Was you going to do it when I was first here?"
"Yes, but you said you were visiting family and I said no but then you come back and you will never leave again." And then I blackout. I wake up from been a puppet long enough to write this and he is about to be back. So if you ever see a town called Hunterville.
NEVER COME TO HUNTERVILLE.
Bye,
Fitz Hester

13 Cool Airbnbs To Rent For Halloween Themed Photoshoots
We are now more than a week into October and the Halloween season is upon us. Instead of breaking and entering into an abandoned house, sleep without fear of a masked killer. Here are some airbnbs devoted to the history and creepy allure of antiquity: your ideal haunted house.
1. Asian Room in the Cemetary Schoolhouse  (Hudson, NY, USA)
This “schoolhouse” is a collection of airbnbs in one massive house. Grabbed from its description, the house is a four-room schoolhouse. Also built in 1900 near one of America’s most historic cemeteries: The Cedar Park cemetery. As pictured, this view gives total Pet Semetary vibes.
In the bedroom, an authentic Chinese opium bed commands the space. In the description, this Airbnb calls itself a “3-D” history lesson. Back in its prime, the “Hudson River School painters, inventors,, and titans of industry favored the space. It is also noted this space was once a high attraction for curious travelers and artists.
2. The Manor Master Chamber (Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA)
Pictured: Scorch
According to its description, one family passed down this house for several generations. This dungeon-styled home is something out of a medieval Tudor home. Built in 1883, amenities include: a big fireplace, picnic area, and a photogenic, friendly Doberman named Scorch.
The interior of the house is less imposing than the exterior. The inside is adorned with cozy antiques, lively plants, and warm colors. The host also encourages murder mystery parties and photo shoots. Visit this preserved, welcoming dungeon perfect for your haunted, snug backdrop.
3. 18th Century Cottage (Savannah, Georgia, USA)
This space is an official designated historical district within a small urban woodland. Adorned with antiques and oddities, its vintage carpets and basketwork maintain its authentic period presentation. Established in 1799 and surrounded by forest, it also includes a Smart TV to marathon those classic horror films. Amongst them, try watching The Conspirator (2010) dir. Robert Redford, and see your surroundings unfold into a haunted, historical filmscape.
4. Chateau Pitau: Castle with a Ghost  (Vidnoye, Moskovskaya oblast, Russia)
Six miles from Moscow, Russia, this haunted castle is available for rent. A remote forest surrounds this castle and leads to a path to the lake in the back. Amenities include two pools, a wooden sauna, and a casual ghost in the castle. This ghost, according to the host, only “appears weekly at midnight,” so watch out for that. Even with flowers and butterflies, the imposing architecture makes it very suitable for an eerie backdrop.
An expansive, open-air space, this castle has eight beds, three bathrooms, and strange decorations sprinkled throughout the property. Judging by the reviews, it doesn’t seem the ghost is very threatening.
5. Captain Grant’s 1754 Historical House (Preston, Connecticut USA)
If you’re looking for a house devoted to history, this historical house is next. This house is different from your average colonial home. Located in countryside Connecticut, forest and field surround the house by five acres. Most of the furniture and antiques dates back to the early 1800’s which is around when they built the house. It’s also registered under the National Registry of Historic Places. Caretakers and hosts devote a lot of effort in making this experience as authentic as possible. The history embedded only adds to its spooky, charming allure.
Wake up in the morning in a haunting, historic home to an aromic breakfast and amenities to further enjoy your stay. These antiques are very photogenic and the art adds to its antiquity.
6. Five Finger Lighthouse (Petersburg, Alaska, USA)
Come to stay at the first lighthouse built in Alaska!  Not located in Maine like the upcoming Robert Pattison film Lighthouse, shoot your October pics on this quaint island. Perfect for its already isolated setting, this Lighthouse is open to those searching for an entire island to themselves. According to the house’s description, the working lighthouse sits on the scenic Frederic Sound. There’s even a forest on the island home to many different animals, even serving views of humpback whales, perfect for some Ring vibes.
7. Sabine Sunset Lakehouse (Many, Louisana, USA)
Instructed by the house host, you need to follow a long dirt road into four acres of forest to access this rural getaway. What sounds like the start of any forest-situated horror film, this house is completely remote from civilization. With its antique furniture style and outdated wallpaper, this lakehouse is something out of Friday the 13th or Amityville Horror.
This house also has no WiFi or cable and has lots of animals strolling around outside. With a lake as a backyard, it serves as a great vintage background for a rustic 80’s horror shoot.
8. Historic Holiday Home with Pool (Tresana, Tuscany, Italy)
A 200-foot walk up to this giant holiday home, spend a week in a house Shining style. With old photographs and divine images adorning the walls, you’ll be sure every frame will fall down by midnight.
Alone in the middle of Tuscany with approximately four other people makes a great setting for a horror marathon. Try on some on-theme SFX makeup and hide between the brick-stone crevices hidden throughout the land. The house has an amazing view of the mountains as well as acres of forest surrounding the area. The next city is more than two hours away which means at least three ghosts live in one of the seven bedrooms and it’s going to be yours. At this point, an exorcism could happen here
9. Amityville Village Spacious Victorian Home (Amityville, NY, USA)
Looking through all these airbnbs, it’d be a shame to not include a house near the actual Amityville house.
In Jaws, the book, the beach where the great white attacks is right along the coastline of Amity. Amityville, New York seems like one big New England suburban horror set. Styled like an old Victorian home, this house gives your typical cozy American dream house a twist of terror
(Why is that window frame glowing?
10. Cottage at Penns Creek (Spring Mills, Pennsylvania, USA)
This house looks like a dream except it reminded me immediately of the house the scientist lives in The Human Centipede. Situated dead center amongst six acres of land, this house is a far way from town and borders a national forest. Even the name alone, Cottage in the Woods makes me think immediately of Cabin in the Woods. With this lush, forested campground, it would serve for perfect campfire pictures amongst pitch black darkness and strange, welcoming sounds coming from the woods.
11. Stafford Retreat Home (Elk Creek, Virginia, USA)
After watching Creep 2 a couple months ago, its hard not to see any mountain cabin/getaway as just a regular house. With its 70’s wood appeal, this house can go from homey to killer lumberjack in seconds. Even its opening picture above is something seen out of the title card of a nature horror thriller. Surrounded by 75 acres of land and lake, it’d be a perfect venue for 70’s themed horror celebration.
12. Historic Home with Royal Connection (Caernarfon, Wales, United Kingdom)
This house looks more like an orphanage than a Welsh stone mansion. With a huge stone cross embedded right above the entrance, it could even be a church rather than just another house in the British Isles. Its description notes that one of Britain’s most distinguished soldiers lived in this house during the 19th century, elevating it to royalty status. When the fog rolls in during autumn, this place seems like Night of the Living Dead will happen right outside its doorstep.
13. Remote Mountain Cabin in the Woods (Galax, Virginia, USA)
The interior of this house is uncannily similar to the interior of the house from Evil Dead and Cabin in the Woods (even in the name of the listing!). A faraway, rustic getaway, this logged cabin is something of a dream for antique and vintage horror lovers. With photogenic collectibles and interiors, this house serves as the ultimate fall photo session.
The utter seclusion in the middle of the forest, this cabin provides a great backdrop for some creepy photo shoots—especially during nighttime Autumn.
