Week 5 | Mercs & Murder Husbands

Here’s the outline of the event for those interested. TLDR, This event celebrates relationship tags that have less than 30 works on ao3, both platonic and romantic. The rarest of rarepairs!

Inspired by Harley harassing interacting with Marc and Damian in chapter 20 of in labyrinths of reflections by @blackkatmagic, specifically these lines:

“Fuck the hell off,” he growls, and gets a hand on her face as she tries to kiss his mask. She’s wearing a lot of lipstick, and he'd rather not run around the rest of the night with a black lip-print on his face. 

and

Harley blinks at him, big eyes and blond pigtails and smeared makeup that makes her look like a raccoon with a hangover, and then laughs. 

Ho-ly-shit, I cannot begin to express how happy I am with this piece! Initially I was having a hard time with MK’s suit, to the point that I was contemplating just dropping the whole project. (I hate drawing superhero suits, why do I keep on doing this to myself) Like always, all it came down to was retaking my ref and utilizing that handy-dandy line of action, and I finished it pretty easily after that.

Damian was a last minute add-on, and I wanted to draw him on Marc’s right side and a head taller (kids are bigger than you think!) but I ran out of room on the page. I ran into the same problem with Harley’s mallet; I wanted it to be bigger, but with the angle it had to sit at to rest against her thigh, I kept it on the smaller side. 

This piece has made it very clear how limiting my sketchbooks’ size is. For example, I have an idea for another week in this event, but it literally wouldn't fit in this sketchbook so I’m not going to make it. Digital art 1: traditional, 0.

I tried out a new lining style as well, and I’m never going back. Before, I was making every line the same width, but it’s SO much more impactful with alternating line thickness! I attached the lined final sketch below. Do you see how much of a difference it makes?? (Written early May, so I've been using this style since.)

Details:

I think it’s silly that Harley’s boots are covered in blood, but not her actual weapon lol

Harley is as tall as she is because she’s standing on her toes in platform boots

The tattoo on Harley’s midsection is of ivy leaves (though, it’s not poison ivy) as a sort of homage to Ivy. Not that she’s dead or anything. They’re just. Lovers. So, tattoo.

I got to put NO WORK into shading the black parts of MK’s suit, and that was FABULOUS

I wanted to give her colored shoe laces, because I love small details like that. I would love to give characters any color of laces, but some of them seem to have negative meanings, especially on Doc Martens, so I went the safe route and gave her purple laces, which represents gay pride. Yes, I know she’s bisexual, but I felt like I didn’t have many options.

ANOTHER DPxDC idea (as if I write prompts for anything else lol ✍(◔◡◔)

And once again, I think I might have a hyperfixation rn, another deaged Dani (Ellie) and Dan (Dante)! and Dad!Danny.

And you know what, lets make it another DannyxConner idea.

Danny is on a field trip with his class (NOT in Gotham though, LOVE Gotham but lets go with a different city) in like Central City or Metropolis (If Metropolis, Danny is SUPER excited to see the space sections they have at the museum they no doubt have, because well SUPERMAN is an alien and based in their city. If in Central City Conner is visiting Bart.)

During the trip he bumps into Conner and the two just hit it off. Conner enjoys listening to Danny rant about space and the stars and finds watching Danny's eyes light up in joy kinda cute. And if he got his new hero name Supernova from listening to Danny's rants about the stars well... no one needs to know how he got it.

Danny likes how chill Conner is and how the guy stood against Dash and the other jocks when Dash decided he wanted to mess with Danny during the trip, a rare thing nowadays but sometimes Dash does try, and how he respects/likes Danny's friends.

He didn't even say anything negative or hurtful when he found out Danny has two kids back home.

In the end the two exchange numbers, flirt hard, and maybe set up a date in the future. And then more dates. Becoming boyfriends. AND meeting the family. Conner is smitten with just out of toddlerhood Ellie and toddler Dante and adores them. And he loves how the Fentons just love him the moment he stepped into their house and was introduced as Danny's boyfriend, he made sure to bring over a pie Ma should him how to make.

Things get a bit complicated when Conner, Supernova, is at a reunion of YJ members and his phone lights up with a text message from Danny.

He's smiling with a goofy/soft look when he opens the text and see's its a picture of Danny holding a pouting toddler Dante and Ellie on his lap smiling with a notable gap in her teeth at the camera. The message he got was 'Ellie wanted you to know she finally lost her first baby tooth. Dan's been grumpier, I think he misses you.'

He is pulled out of his happy thoughts and musings when he hears Bart gasp hard and drop a bowl of snacks onto the floor. Conner turns to from the future Speedster and see's him about to have a panic attack.

Bart, Impulse, is having a freak out after catching a glimpse of the text picture Conner had gotten and being nosy wanted to know what got his friend to smile so smitten. He knew of Conner's current boyfriend and the kids Conner adores but haven't had time to be introduced to them or even see a pic.

He wasn't expecting to see the very MONSTER of his NIGHTMARES that basically destroyed the world in the FUTURE as a toddler pouting at a camera and surrounded by two smiling identical looking people either. People he never saw in the future or with HIM AND-

Oh.... OH!

Was that why he turned evil? Did something happen to his family?

very touchy with each other. you might even say. ccclingy. its to be expected, they're two halves of a whole after all and all they've got of each other. worryingly co-dependent. do not separate. ever.

Danny was really weak and sick after the initial separation, and was for a while after. Jamie knew internally that if Danny died, he'd take the whole world with it. He was the one sole caretaker for him while he got better -- not for lack of trying on Vlad's part, but without his ghost powers he was nothing more than a feeble (albeit handsomely rich) man, and James looked ready to bite his head off if he got within ten feet of either of them.

Vlad is intimately aware that James (or Danny, if he tried) could snap his spine in half like a twig, and is uncomfortably aware of his own lack of ghost half now. It makes him feel self-conscious and exposed, so he never fully returns back to "cocky and self-assured billionaire Vlad Masters". Making deals with other brands feels a lot harder now that he can no longer possess them anymore.

Speaking of, he very quickly has to come up with a cover story as to why there's now a James Daniel Fenton to the public, when no records whatsoever of him existing existed prior. Lots of forging false government documents on his end. James and Danny do not help because it's his fault this happened in the first place.

(Regardless of whether or not Danny actually willingly chose to rip out his ghost half/humanity in canon is true, or if that was Vlad Masters speaking out of his ass, a large part of the blame still falls on Masters.)

(As his primary caretaker and guardian, it's his responsibility to ensure the health and safety of his charge, and since Danny was in clear emotional duress at the time, it can be argued that he was not in the mental state to make such a decision. And, allegedly, couldn't do it on his own which is why he asked Vlad for help.)

I chose "James" as Dan's name since it's a popular fanon middle name for Danny, and since he's half of Danny, it felt like it just made sense lol. Also because of the ensuing comedy of the two of them introducing themselves as "James Daniel Fenton" and "Daniel James Fenton". It's got the same energy as "danny with a y" and "danny with an i" and it's the exact kind of name bullshit you expect parents to give their twins.

I don't have their exact personalities down, but something I am actively writing into this au's bible is that I think Danny should be the quiet and (ig technically) meaner one. There's a lot to go into about interpretations for ghosts, halfas, and the incident itself, but TL:DW; Danny is technically soulless, or at the very least missing half of his soul (altho Jamie is too just in a different direction).

Pair that with the trauma of losing his family in front of him + having his ghost half ripped out + all the trauma he would've sustained as a hero, and he's not doing too hot mentally! i think if the twins met good timeline!Danny, Danny would've mistaken Danny for Dan and Jamie for the original half.

He comes off to others as pretty apathetic and indifferent to a borderline terrifyingly calm degree. He doesn't go out of his way to insult people, but he also doesn't care enough to consider the other party's feelings so he doesn't filter himself, which makes him come off as rude. The only times he looks truly comfortable is when he's near Jamie or talking to him.

His standoffish, ice prince demeanor makes Jamie look like a saint in comparison. When really he's not all that much better? He's more outwardly emotional than Danny, whether that be positive or negative, but at the end of the day he doesn't trust or care about anyone else any more than Danny does, and he's got a bit of a sadistic streak. Danny reigns him in when he starts becoming too destructive.

(Which I think makes sense. Danny asked Vlad to rip out his ghost half specifically so he could stop feeling his human emotions. Dan, despite his monotone voice, does exhibit emotions. He's smug when he asks Valerie if he likes his ghostly wail, sardonic when he reunites with Sam and Tucker, annoyed, shocked at Danny's ghostly wail, etc. He enjoys wreaking destruction and chaos.)

(If Danny had survived his encounter with Dan and if Vlad was successful, then I imagine he'd be rather apathetic to his other half as a whole. That'd be interesting.)

Overall though they're both hurt, bitter, and distrustful of the world around them, with abandonment issues a mile wide. They can get better and they can heal, but it takes time and patience and proper support.

On the DPxDC side of things, they do genuinely hold some kind of respect or regard for Bruce. They also don't become vigilantes for a while. Neither of them are jumping at the bit to enter heroism again, not when it was heroism that killed their family in the first place.

In fact when they find out Bruce = Batman they think he's foolish for it. They think its a fool's errand, and they've been so spurned by their time as Phantom that for a few weeks, Jamie even refused to call Bruce anything but Sisyphus. Danny called him Tantalus, and the two of them had a faux-argument about which one was more accurate.

Bruce does, though, worm his way into both of their hearts, and that's like, the main reason they become vigilantes to join him. So that they could keep him safe and not because of any desire to return to the heroic life. Relearning to care and finding satisfaction in helping others was an unintentional side effect.

Essentially:

I have a very specific au in my head that I'll probably never write but it's a sports au where Tim and Anita do fencing (epee and saber, respectively), Cissie obviously does archery and Kon, Cassie, Greta and Bart do swimming, but specifically Kon swims butterfly and medley (focusing on the 200m butterfly and 400m medley), Cassie swims backstroke (50 and 100m), Greta swims breaststroke (100m and 200m) and Bart swims freestyle (50m, 100m and 200m, but focusing on the 50m), only because I think they would like to do a 4x100 mixed medley relay together.

@fantasyinvader I was looking at the "Claude gives the Alliance like a hot potato to Dimitri to fig off to Almyra" convo, and he says this :

I'm leaving Fódlan. There are things I have to do. Dreams I need to see to fruition. That's why I became the Alliance leader to begin with, actually. But it left me no time for what I was really after. You'd better not take on too many responsibilities yourselves, or else you'll end up in the same boat. And remember...both the living and the dead cling to us without any regard for our own lives. It's up to us to break free of that weight and follow the path that we believe in.

Apparently, becoming the Alliance Leader burdened him too much to work on his "let's make people accept each other" ? Like, it left him no time to work on his goals??? When, as the Alliance Leader, he could have influenced the people of Leicester to, uh, not be so biaised against Almyrans (if only Almyrans accept to not invade for funsies, but that's something Claude will never tackle on, on-screen at least).

And the "living" who cling to him are a weight?

A burden??

Sure AM is all about living for yourself and making your own choices - but this game is also allergic to duty and responsabilities : is Claude basically saying having to look after the living people of Leicester is a weight or a burden that prevents him from achieving his goals?

Especially when this convo happens after Dimitri's return to Firdhiad, aka, him answering the hopes and wishes of his people as the King?

Sure the setting is not as heated as, say, Roland and Serenor from TS fighting over inheritence and Serenor accidently calling "ruling Glenbrook and being a King to its people" a "burden", but damn if Dimitri's reaction is, uhh...

Yeah.

Subdued is an understatment.

Bar the plot making as much sense as Thales not nuking Gronder Field when the mock Eagle and Lion mock battle happens to get rid of Rhea and the remaining Nabateans, Claude gives the Alliance away - after its lords agreed to be part of the Kingdom - because being the Leader of the Alliance prevented from reaching his goals.

Yeah, in a way, that's a good thing, because I suppose no one would like to be ruled over by a leader like that, who calls "responsability and duty to his people" burdens that prevent him from reaching his goals.

But more importantly,

What kind of insight does this convo bring to his S support with Billy?

All those weak people who have nothing to cling to but their goddess... They'll rely on you just like they used to rely on Rhea. You'll be a leader all who are struggling to survive in war-torn lands can look up to.

If the living clinging up to him - or relying on him - prevent him, or anyone else, from achieving their dreams, that what is basically saying to Billy?

Is he saying Billy should bear that burden - people relying on them - even if it means they won't be able to achieve their dream, while he'd be free to do so?

I must return to my homeland. As for ruling this new, unified land... Well, I'll leave that to you.

Is it up to Billy to mop up Fodlan while Claude can still return home nilly-willy, claim his Almyran crown and work on his dream? Like, Billy takes care of the people and supports them, while Claude "works on his dream" or whatever this means?

I was joking earlier about this, but taking into consideration what this Claude believes, aka people relying on him is a burden/a weight preventing him from reaching his dream, his Nopes convo with Dimitri makes a frightening amount of sense :

That's right. Think about it. Who steals your freedom and gives you an endless list of duties and obligations simply because you have a Crest?

Bar the Rhea BaD/crust BaD hate boner, being a ruler means having your freedom stolen and instead receive an "endless list of duties and obligations".

That's basically what Claude is complaining about in FE16 as the one who had to lead the Alliance, so him complaining about the same thing in Nopes makes a frightening amount of sense!

Ultimately, I know we can't compare Fodlan's writing to FE10's excellent part 2, but we're very far from Elincia going from this

“…Why does this happen?! My people fight, brother against brother… And no matter what I do, I can’t stop it! I’m a miserable failure. I just want to crawl into a cave somewhere. How can anyone believe in me now?” “I never asked for any of this… I never wanted to be queen!”

To this :

“I will not. It is my indecision that has allowed the rebellion to come this far. As the one responsible for protecting this country… I refuse to run from this problem any longer.” “Thank you, everyone. I am indeed the queen of Crimea, and a queen does not hide. Our enemies are fellow citizens of Crimea. But we can no longer sit idle as they destroy the harmony of our nation.” “You’re wrong. Strength without compassion does not a ruler make. Protecting people is what it means to protect the country. You care nothing for the people, so you are unfit to become king. You cloak your desire to rule with pretty speeches, but it is petty avarice nonetheless!”

Credit where it's due, F-Claude at least tries to keep Leicester people out of harm's way, but the way he words it to Dimitri, bar his nebulous "IdEaLs", Claude, in this convo, cares nothing for the people of the Alliance. They're just a weight preventing him from achieving his dream.

And this is a character IS wants to push as a Lord, similar to what Marth, FE5!Leif, Ephraim or Chrom are, when his mindset is completely opposed to them.

Granted, given how he is a Supreme Leader expy, and how IS force feeds her as a "Lord", that's not surprising but damn.

This is my last piece for this years event, and I am SO beyond happy with it! Particularly the coloring on DPs and RHs suits.

Red Hood: “I did not. Believe it or don’t, but New York has job opportunities.”

The base concept of the party we are attempting to build: It is a time of famine. Our main focus is on a pride of bastards. The king of the pride, an unscrupulous "businessman", primarily concerned with his own benefit with no regard for those in the territory he rules, and the lionesses who enforce his will. Regardless of motive, every character here will be working under the same primary motive: power for the pride, resources for the in-group, influence for their king. The precise means through which this is done and setting in which this is accomplished is very malleable, and we will be Fucking Around a lot. Does not matter what species because modifying what species characters are in most TTRPGs is a matter of just reskinning it.

The general aesthetic of what we have to work with: Very chaotic blend of pirate-y apparel (scimitars and eyepatches and ships and et cetera) and what we can best describe as "post-apocalyptic chic". We have no intent of actually including a lot of oceanic themes but the Miscellaneous Piratical Aesthetic Wear is easily appropriatable for our general aesthetic core. We are operating off of "only things that can be obtained in the month of January" for the petsite whose one-cub-a-day mechanism we are using to generate characters so this will be somewhat scattered.

Our selections are based on What We Have Already On Hand mostly from charity bundles, and pre-existing knowledge of modifying TTRPGs for fun. This is, functionally, a glorified creative writing prompt type of thing.
