Gen, no romance

Synopsis: Leo goes swimming and "something" follows him back home in return. Kind-of mind-control/possession ensues and mostly not fun.

Sickfic except the "sick" is kinda like the whole "parasite from the water" psychological horror situation, except that parasite is also maybe um magic. Like. H2O: Just Add Water except significantly more stressful.

Please note the psychological horror aspect and the additional tags

The fluff is good when it's there, but so is the angst🤙🤙

I always found it odd in Fast Forward how the turtles never were phased by being able to go out in public, and then realising that no, climbing up the sides of the buildings and jumping across cars is not social etiquette. So I wrote this.

The fic is a lot more angsty, actually. It’s called What Was Left Behind, and it’s about Mikey realising that he is struggling to fit into the future world he’s always dreamed of despite usually loving change.

I wanted to explore what it would be like for someone who usually is very optimistic to begin to fall, and Mikey became my emotional punching bag again, poor dude. I know Raph got some focus in the series, so it may have made more sense to write this about him, but I dunno, the concept I was trying to go for seemed to fit Mikey more for me.

But yeah, 6 pages of angst. Check it out if you want, otherwise it’s chill.

New York City had been quiet for a total of ten minutes. Ten minutes since the portal had closed. Ten minutes since Hamato Leonardo had…since he had….

The technodrome had exploded, leaving behind a ringing in his ears and a pinkish-blue sky that Donnie might have normally thought of as beautiful. Now he could only stare in horror as the clouds dissipated.

Something in him hoped Leo had survived. That their comms would crackle to life and he'd be safe on the other side of the city somewhere. He'd probably tell some sort of stupid joke about how they were all stuck on Staten Island while he was living it up in Manhattan.

But that didn't happen.

He doesn’t remember screaming for help, a sound ripped right out of him, woven from pure agony as he’d felt Mikey grow heavier against him, not even a flicker of rolling eyeballs beneath his shut lids.

He does remember, however, Splinter emerging from the dojo, ears flat against his head as he’d suddenly just appeared in front of Leo, like magic.

He remembers Donnie blinking away the sleep behind his eyes, quickly replaced with dark shades of fear, the green spilling from his skin, leaving him a ghostly white as he’d grazed his eyes over Mikey’s frame still limp in Leo’s hold. He remembers Raph’s voice buckling with hurt as he’d asked him, “what the hell happened, Leo?”

Combatant – Users provide their mystic arts through physical combats, most users are known martial artist

Healer – Provides healing and medical spells and incantations, some say that there are immortals lives among them

Illusionist – Casting fake scenarios or deceiving images in front of your eyes, users or not you can never tell

Traversal – The users have the ability to travel or transport an object, another person, or themselves to any location with ease

Union – Consider as the prodigy exclusive, since most users able to master even the most complex mystic arts, tends to be appointed as Archmages

Guardian – Armed with basic raw strength and incredible durability, the user provides mystic arts as durable as a walking fortress

Alchemist – Converting materials and resources into elixirs and potions, users are able to turn any liquid into many uses and possibilities

Artificer – Known as the craftsman or researcher for all types of mystical objects, weapons, or artifacts, and learn how to use them

Beast Tamer – Taming all creatures big and small, dangerous to harmless, connected to nature and living things

Each class’s weakness or cons:

Combatant – Have trouble performing non-combative spells and incantations, recommended to take other classes as coverage.

Healer – Have trouble with self-defense, recommended taking Guardian or Combatant class.

Illusionist – Often relies upon illusions, this class often falls for its own tricks, must be supervised by Spellbreakers

Traversal – Mostly known to perform dangerous stunts, class practice must be supervised.

Union – Heavily supervised for many reasons, one of them due to the number of spells being mastered, the users tend to over-exhaust themselves.

Guardian – Massive defense, but rather low on other stats, recommended to take other classes as coverage.

Alchemist – High supervision, especially by superiors, most liquids can be dangerous.

Artificer – Maintain under the law of the government, this class tends to create or use illegal artifacts.

Beast Tamer – Not prone to be a powerful spell-caster, recommended to take other classes as coverage.

For further information consider the message above, we do not by whatsoever means to discourage all the participants. We all just want to ensure that the well-being of all participants is being considered very seriously for the sake of our academy and Hidden City’s name.

Be in mind, teachers are also participants in this academy. Therefore, the rules and regulations as well as safety also affect teachers. We’ll do our best to keep things nice and balanced.

Class sorting system

All participants must reveal their class through the sorting pillars. If the mystic bar was over 50% then participants must take the top class. Below 50% takes the breakthrough class. And below 10% are not qualified and must take another sorting pillar class. On some rare occasion, the bar on the pillar can fill up and fully glows, indicating that the person is the true born for that class and will earn a gift from the oracles depending on each class. True born are instantly selected to the top class. If the bar fills up but not glowing, doesn’t indicate that the person is a true born.

What’s a breakthrough class?

Breakthrough class is a class specified for each class to help those who need to reach above 50. In each semester, the participants must take the sorting pillar test once again. Those who had a breakthrough and went above 50 will be transported to the top class immediately. For those who haven’t, remain in the breakthrough class, and the process repeats.

Once again, we do not by whatsoever means to discourage all participants who are selected for this class. We’re making sure that all participants can develop their skills safely and within range of legality to reach the top class.

What’s so good about the Top Tier Class?

The top class provides more learning materials and experience. A more complex and higher value study. More challenging spells and studies can only be done by skilled mysticians. This class provides more facilities, fields, and more chances to learn from experts. All things considered, the top-class participants can furthermore exceed their limitations within their studies.

Some days would feel like drowning. The emotions, the stress, it all would wrap around him. It would take a hold of him and pull him deep under, and there would be nothing that he could do. His mind would spiral, and he would feel like he was drowning. It would get hard to breathe, hard to do anything. Sometimes he’d notice, and sometimes he’d get so lost in his mind that it is an ocean filled with way too many islands that were named thoughts, worries, fears… that he’d miss the pressure around him.

There were times when he’d have his family by his side. They’d comfort him, help him, sing him songs, or talk about tales that would distract him. They’d help. They’d pull him out of the freezing waters. Out of the hold of metallic claws. Out of the future that will never happen. Out of the fear of seeing his family in danger again, all because of him.

And yet, Leo sometimes would seek loneliness. He’d seek the chance to fight his thoughts, his fears alone. On such days he would feel surrounded by water, but not drowning, so he would want to simply disappear. To be forgotten and left alone for some time. To let everything inside him out, on his own. To drown his thoughts, instead of himself drowning in them.

During these days, water would be the answer.

He'd leave a note that he'd be out for a walk, just to not worry anyone during his absence. He’d hold his katanas tightly, and make a portal. He’d think of the lakes, of the calm waters, of safety. He’d step in, and find himself in the embrace of a silent world. A world made of a lake that reflected every single star in the sky, shining brilliantly. A world that greeted him with butterflies flying around, small and fragile, beautiful creatures. He’d look at the scenery and relax. Take a deep breath, get into the water.

Bless his slider turtle genes, staying underwater wasn’t a problem for him. He could hold his breath longer than a human. Which was what let him drift into the lake’s calming waters. He’d let himself be surrounded by the underwater world, his eyes shut. Swimming always would calm him. Something about it felt natural, he’d drift in the water. His mind would drift too. The blue feelings would fall out of him in the form of tears whenever he swam back to the surface. Then he’d let himself sink. He’d get it all out, let the water carry his muffled wails then.

After all, he wanted no one to know about this, about his tears and how the pain came back to hurt him. How even after the comforts of his loved ones, he’d still find himself back in the void of darkness. He knew it wouldn’t go away any time soon. He guessed everyone was aware of that. But he still didn’t want to share it, not every single time he felt the fears grip him tight. Not every time he overthought about the future, and how much of it they saved. How much of it they changed. The unknown haunted him, so he would let the waters take his fears and thoughts away.

Leo would think of the songs his family would sing. As the ones April would whisper to, Donnie would hum, Mikey would make up, and the songs and lullabies Splinter and Raph would sing. Leo knew all of them from the heart. They sounded to him like waves hugging him. Like he was swimming, swimming, swimming... Safe, comforting.

Sometimes he'd feel like he was sinking, forgetting the songs when he'd be too deep in his thoughts. But in the calm waters, he'd remember them again. He'd find comfort. He'd think of the songs of his family. He’d think of their words, hugs, and smiles. He’d think how together they got through so much. How they’ll keep going through everything.

Then he’d finally feel fully relaxed. He’d be left with nothing but tired eyes. He’d feel lighter, calmer. His thoughts would stop troubling him, they’d disappear for a while. And Leo would swim back to the surface and not sink back again. He’d let the moonlight reflect on his face, and his eyes would meet with the faint golden glow. He’d watch the butterflies that never left this place fly around him. He’d let them land on his hand, greet them as if they were old friends. And then, he’d take a deep breath, and let himself feel alright. It would be okay.

Nothing hunted him down anymore, and they had kept the key safe. They were growing in many ways, Leo would think. They were becoming stronger, wiser. And Leo would find comfort in the words his family once said to him one more time:

“We’ll get through anything, as long as we are together.”

He knew they would be ready against whatever came towards them. Leo no longer would let his family down, he’d get better at everything. He knew he could, with his family by his side… even if they would be far away, he knew they'd be with him. As long as he let them help, as long as he listened to them, it would end up okay. It was hard, but he could do it. He had to do it. That would be what he’d do. For his family, so they’d be fine. And everything would be alright.

And a stray tear would fall. The last one, and its reason would be relief instead of pain.

He’d look at the sky again.

A small smile would appear on his face. He’d already miss home.

He’d get out of the water, and return the same way he came. A bright blue light led him to the cozy sewers, to the subway cars they called home for the past several months. It wouldn't matter if it was past midnight or almost dawn– he didn’t know. What he would care about would be seeing his family. So he’d walk around the lair. He’d check on his brothers. See how Donnie once again fell asleep in his lab and would drag him to the bed in his lab; see how Raph would be snoring while holding tightly his plushies and Leo would smile widely; see how Mikey dropped his blanket on the floor like he always did and lay it back over his brother. And then, he'd check his father.

And he'd meet with a surprise, to not see his father in his room, but instead find him in the living room. He'd see him going through albums, photographs of the past in his hands. Leo would be quiet, and yet, Splinter would notice. He'd ask why he was awake. Leo would shrug it off, as he would do every time he’d get caught awake past midnight.

But Splinter would understand.

He wouldn't ask questions, he would say something about it being late. Maybe scold him, without being serious at all. And yet, he'd look at him knowingly. He'd understand.

And Leo would be grateful.

Splinter would smile, he'd call him by his side, ask him if he'd like to join him, be his company. Leo would smile back, walk and sit on the couch's arm. They'd look at photos together. Laugh and joke, remember the old days, and listen to Splinter tell the same stories from his Lou Jitsu days or their childhood. It would go on for hours, till sleepiness would show itself, and Leo would remember the warmth and comforting feeling of resting. Next to Splinter, whose arm would hug his son, he'd let himself drift to sleep as his father would sing quietly an old, familiar, song.

And then, everything would be alright.

Oh boy this is...quite an ask. Especially bc fanfic recs are so personal? What I think is a good fic will be vastly different from other people. I have a really high angst tolerance, so please double check tags with these. Also keep in mind that I mainly read donnie-centric fics.

Author has done research and any inaccuracies have gone over this EMT’s head. Donnie and Leo get kidnapped and are forced to fight in the battle nexus. This is my pick for the most well written fanfic and most in canon characterization with ALL the characters. You will HEAR the characters not just through the dialogue but also through the writing itself. As the reader, you will be beaten down and have your heart crushed mercilessly which makes the pay off the most rewarding, satisfying experience that I've personally ever felt with a fanfic. This fic lives in my head rent free and I think about it at least once a day. It is my all time favorite rise fic and I highly recommend it.
