I feel like similar to parents keeping baby teeth, Thragg would keep things like, first weapon you ever trained with, memorial photo of your first spar with another child that you won, your first flightsuit, a toddlers toy that was crushed on accident because you suddenly got your powers and had far too much strength than you knew what to do with. And Nolan, if he's raising you on Earth with Debbie, he's at all your school functions, whether it's dancing or sports, and if you aren't in those things, he encourages you HEAVILY (it totally isn't. Training or anything or making sure you're staying fit and active for anything in the future hahaha). He's taking photos and cheering in the crowds. He wants your art in his office. He wants to play games with you once you get your powers. He buys a case for any medals and trophies to proudly display.

Also like do you have any idea how much of an actual phenomenon it is, I've seen videos of it, where dads basically have infinitely more sympathy for their new daughters when they already have sons. I distinctly remember a video where a man was holding his second-born, his first daughter, and he was like weeping because he was feeling intense empathy for his infant daughter because she was crying and looking at him as he held her, and the wife was filming and it was captioned "he never did this with our son" and like. Daughter Reader would definitely be their spoiled little princess but you're also their spoiled little princess under very specific terms of CONTAINMENT AND SURVEILLANCE. You've got curfews, they need to know who your friends are, what families do they come from, what do their parents do. They'll treat you like a princess but they'll also socially isolate you from others and. Basically control your life. And if you ever try and pull away from Dear Old Dad, well. Viltrumites can have some pretty extreme reactions. Will Nolan have to disfigure that boy you won't stop talking to? Will Thragg have to build a pretty little cell so that his adult daughter doesn't sneak out to drink and fuck unknown men? That's up to how much of an obedient faithful daughter you want to be. uh, sure

lets start with the three book series i have had on loop (audiobooks through libby) for the last 4 years:

Temeraire. 9 books. alternate history age of sale, an homage to Aubrey Maturin (the author literally stopped posting fanfic for that series 1 year before she published the first temeraire novel). What is the alternate? Well. dragons exist. and they are people. The premise is a human naval captain finds himself captain in the air force because a dragon imprints on him. Explore how the first napoleonic war goes when dragons are involved both in battle and in politics. I love this series because it scratches a very specific itch for humans and giant monsters bonding and interacting at every level of society. A lot of real historical figures show up (napoleon...). but it never feels forced. Im so bad at selling this series. its really great.

Memoirs of Lady Trent. 5 novels. more dragons ! this time a world similar to ours, but dragons exist! however this time they are animals, not people, and the main character is a fantasy victorian jewish woman who is obsessed with studying dragons and breaks her worlds gender barriers (which are the same as victorian englands were) to achieve her goals. also there's a slow burn romance with a nerdy fantasy muslim man (think indiana jones!!!) and they go on ADVENTURES about ARCHEOLOGY AND NATURALISM (books 3 through 5. i dont want you to think i lied when this man dont show up in books 1 and 2. BUT THERE'S STILL BOTH NATURALISM AND ARCHEOLOGY ADVENTURES IN BOOKS 1 AND 2). I did not see the twist of the series coming either. wild stuff. love it. there's a epilogue 6th book where the characters spend 80% of the time translating ancient tablets and somehow this is incredibly engaging, props to the author. this is a first person POV, the author is writing it as a MEMOIR so you have to imagine this old lady writing this down in her study.

The Murderbot Diaries (5 books, 4 are novellas). Sci-fi, out in space! Mostly taking place in literally capitalist hell region of space called "the corporation rim" which is... ruled by corporations. A lab grown robocop cyborg hacks its programming to become autonomous and wants nothing more than to watch soap operas and be left alone, but of course makes friends along the way as it continues to do its job of protecting humans. the snarky humor is FANTASTIC. its also first person POV and feels like Murderbot cornered you in a seedy space bar on an asteroid and just started ranting about shit "you will not believe the fucking year ive had" and then just rants for hours. Speaking of, 4 hours is the audiobook length for each novella, short enough that you can give the series a try without worrying about length

agatha christie. i mean. the queen of murder mysteries is called that for a reason. her stories are indeed bangers

Howl's Moving Castle. its a 3 book series though the books arent super connected. really fun fantasy adventure comedies.

They fucking SLAP. some stuff is a little dated but other than that, its action packed, its so much fun. Go on an adventure where a shitty know-it-all genius criminal master mind becomes a better person and also there's fairy magic and fairy tech (which might as well be a second kind of magic). the main villain? amazing, unhinged, megalomaniac to the max. i love her. the minor villains? also amazing. i cannot overstate how great the villains are in this.

Dealing with Dragons/Enchanted Forest Chronicles. uhhhh this is my special interest. fantasy comedy adventure.

first off we got my darling claras intro

fun fact its very faint but i put a small aura of light on every instance of her face to make her reeeeally feel saintly. brings a halo everywhere she goes

couple of obvious changes because my dumbass was making thumbnail pages by hand and forgot that if the shape of the thumbnail's off it can really impact proportions of the frames. so i really had to make some artemy frames bigger and change their shapes. turned out ok tho

next we got Ascending The Evil Stairs

i wanted to make that stairwell as weird as i could. bc on my very very first playthrough, i was on call with my sister. and i went down the stairs and INSTANTLY felt claustrophobic. the blank, narrow walls..... the steep steps..... love it.

i had a lot of trouble trying to make the entrance as dramatic and cautious as possible. in the second panel particularly, i wanted to show danko's hand and artemy approaching behind him. but that felt like it was revealing too much too early, and i figured keeping artemy himself obscured and instead focusing on his little steps and motions would be a better effect

and now for the goddamned fight scene

this bitch was so hard to put together coherently.

so from the beginning, i wanted this page to be frantic. i barely even knew what i was doing in the thumbnail lmfao. but overall, i wanted the frames to just suddenly split apart. because of betrayal, sudden action, whichever you want to see it as. but i made a point to give page 18 those same misaligned frames, when artemy turns his back to daniil. when i moved to storyboard for this page, i was suddenly and violently aware of how inconsistent their positions are if i show their bodies as much as i wanted too in the beginning. they're still confusing, but by focusing on specific parts of the body that translates into the disorientation you feel from an actual fight. i hope

there were a Lot of changes to this page's dialogue. and in the end i gotta thank @indigo-constellation for knowing an unreasonable amount of latin quotes for me to choose from because God Damn It, he just wasn't speaking enough latin for me to be satisfied.

so the poses for this one are Quite Different if you look closely. this is because my ass originally wanted this conversation to happen on the floor. The whole plan was that Daniil kicks out Artemy's bad leg, but temy manages to redirect the fall so hes still in control. But i realized that i probably dont have the skills to portray that in a way that flows well enough, so i settled with punching him in the face and shoving him on the desk. Same effect really. The punch was a veeeerry late change of plans but I'm glad how it turned out.

i loooove taking care of animals. especially those who were mistreated before so i can show them how they deserve so much love.

my boyfriend and brother-in-law got a new cat, he's a baby orange cat, and he have a lot of little scratches.

i have him A LOT of cuddles, i am constantly cleaning his eyes which we believe was hurt during a fight and just gave him a bath so we could remove the dirt from the streets. and really, the difference in appearance and energy from yesterday when he arrived and today is beautiful. he's playing a lot, cuddling a lot, jumping around the house, you can really tell how happy he is... he slept in my arms and gave me a lot of kisses!!! i love him!!!

all my cats were rescued and i took care of them since they were small. aradia was so sick when i got her and now she's so healthy and so pretty!!!! and bolinha was 16 days old and so small, she had bugs (i dont know the word in english) and a big worm belly. and shes so big and happy and warm!!!! and theres artemis who is my boyfriend first cat, a black cat just like aradia, and now apolo, and i'm so happy to say that i took care of all of them.

not only that but made people around me who didn't like cats fall in love with them too. my bf was a dog person before and wasn't very found of cats, and now hes in his second kitten and love them deeply. my mother in law didn't liked cats either and now he have a cat and a dog and she send me a lot of pics of them. our convos are mostly about animals!!! idk i'm just really happy and wanted to share that

24. Returned from the dead kiss

There were few people who could claim to know the dead better than Nico. He'd spent disturbingly large portions of his life around people that should have been dead decades ago, but continued anyway, out of time and lost, around vengeful ghosts who refused to rest, around those who had passed on, around those who were unable to die and spent ages in and out of hell, and occasionally- just occasionally- those who managed to come back. He knew every flavor of life and unlife because he'd survived on it, never quite able to make himself comfortable at the warmest end of that spectrum.

He'd gotten close, once. When he had a handful of friends to rely on, each with their own ghosts, and willing to understand his own, he'd thought maybe he could manage his own place in the sun. There was Will, who'd offered a stubbornly bright connection to a home he'd never known how to claim. There was Reyna, who seemed to understand how lost and unwanted he felt, and offered a friendship without complication, and without judgement. There was his sister- not the sister he'd lost, but one he'd found, who loved him as easily as breathing. And then there was Jason, who was just... there, every single time he needed him, trying even when he had no reason to.

But Camp Half-Blood inevitably began to grate again, and despite Will's reassurances, he could only stay for so long. His position in between the camps was complicated, and often disliked, now that everyone understood it, and when Reyna started talking about joining the Hunters of Artemis, he just... couldn't go back to New Rome. Hazel had a life to figure out, now that she understood it all, and while he loved her dearly, he couldn't cling to her for everything. So there was Jason. Until, suddenly, there wasn't.

Nico was not a stranger to people he loved dying. In the past, he had fought it and gotten nowhere. But somewhere in between Piper's crying and Leo's soft, broken laughter late at night, between Reyna leaving with Artemis as his sister had so long ago, and Percy trying to reach out for the first time in ages, like all of the sudden he cared- maybe he just needed something to do.

It was Leo's fault, really. "I'll just keep moving," he'd said, with that heartbreaking, helpless kind of shrug. He'd smiled, but his eyes had been like shattered glass. "What else can you do, right? He's not coming back. I wasn't there, and that's that. And it never hurts as much when I've got a project to focus on, y'know?"

It was a hopeless endeavor. But Nico had brought one person back before, even if it wasn't the person he meant to. Who else could say that? Maybe... just maybe, he could do it again.

What Nico saw, on that journey, he'd never tell anyone. He broke his bones against the unyielding forces of the Underworld and used them like hammers and chisels, always digging deeper, always pushing further. It was no easy task to learn things about the Underworld that mortal minds had never been meant to comprehend, but it wasn't the first time he had, and so he felt like he could do it again. His father was used to him lurking around in the dark, going places no one else would have been allowed to, and his friends were equally used to him coming and going without explanation.

Hazel had her suspicions, he thought. She didn't know the Underworld as well as him, but she knew it enough to know where he'd been when he showed up on her doorstep smelling like earth, his skin pale and sallow like his skeleton was beginning to show through. He didn't tell her much, and she didn't ask much, but she was always there when he came back with something warm and spicy to chase the chill out.

If he was honest with himself, he'd been avoiding Piper since Jason died. But Leo... Something about him was easier to approach. Maybe it was because like Nico, he shouldered it on his own, and like Nico, he always seemed to exist just on the outskirts of their friendgroup, either by nature or by self-fulfilling prophecy. He understood what it was like to live without Jason, to miss him like an ache, and without meaning to, Nico had grown to find comfort in that. There was a kind of camaraderie in misery he could share with Leo that he couldn't with Hazel, where Leo would laugh at things that would surely make Hazel cry. It was easier to let Leo see the things that made him broken, because Leo didn't worry. He just understood.

He'd thought Leo didn't know. He'd never told him. Then, after one of those late nights where Nico had stumbled in with wounds he didn't know how to bandage on his own, they'd stayed up for hours while Leo baked a kind of cookie that was chocolate and spicy and burned the whole way down, because Leo always needed something to do with his hands, and somehow the burn of spice had turned into Nico's best approximation of home, grounding him when nothing else could. They'd eaten them in the quiet of the kitchen, pulling them off the pan when they were still so warm that they fell apart in Nico's fingers, gooey and melt-in-your-mouth perfect. Leo had had a furrow in his brow that Nico didn't know how to comment on, and Nico had waited it out silently, knowing that when Leo was ready to, he would speak.

In the soft light of the kitchen, at four in the morning, Leo had said, so softly that Nico almost didn't hear it, "You know I miss him too. But don't give me someone else to miss, Neeks."

It was easy to forget, sometimes, how smart Leo really was.

Nico knew the dead better than anyone. He knew the things they left behind too.

It took him one year to find Jason. The things he did in that year were things no one else would ever know, because the only person he might have told had died one year ago.

His hair had gotten so long he needed to tie it back, strands slipping from his ponytail to hang in his eyes so that he left streaks of dirt on his forehead trying to push it out again. His heart was hammering in his chest, but he was almost there. At long, long last, he was almost there.

Jason's eyes weren't as bright as they'd once been. The color had dulled, just edging on grey instead of the sky blue he remembered. There was something wrong about the way his face moved, like he couldn't quite remember what he was supposed to do with it. His teeth seemed sharper, inhuman, dangerous. Something about his body seemed more hulking, but at the same time insubstantial, like if Nico pressed his fingers into it it would dissipate.

But Jason's hands were so warm.

"Nico?" he asked, soft with wonder. There was something off about his voice, like it didn't quite register right to the ears, but it was him. The way he reached for Nico's face, his thumbs so fucking gentle as they brushed over his cheeks- the way he frowned, that adorable little furrow between his brows. "Your hair is so long."

Relief washed through Nico and ached. The sound that clawed its way from his throat was raw emotion and nothing else, half laugh, half sob. He clung to one of Jason's wrists, reaching with the other hand to touch Jason's face, to trace the curve of his brow, the scar on his lip. "You're back."

"I'm sorry I left." The corner of Jason's mouth twitched upward, sheepish and shy and warm, just the way Nico remembered it. He brushed tears from Nico's cheek, wrapping one arm around him to pull him closer.

Jason was so warm, solid and alive, and Nico couldn't help but grin through his tears, cupping the back of his head and pulling him in and down.

It was a bad kiss. They were both in desperate need of a shower, and it was hard to kiss Jason through a smile, but Jason squeezed him closer and Nico didn't even care. He kissed Jason the way he'd wanted to all year, channeling every bit of desperation and heartbreak and relief he had into it.

When he pulled back, Jason followed him, pressing their foreheads together and holding him tight, reassuring and sturdy in that way that chased out all Nico's fears every time. "You have so much to catch me up on."

Nico laughed, his hands squeezing Jason's biceps, following his arms to his shoulders, his back, his collar, taking reassurance in the fact that he was here. He was alive. He couldn't touch him enough. He couldn't kiss him enough. "I will. I promise, I will," he said, kissing the corner of Jason's mouth. "We have all the time in the world."

the moment he arrives in the town Death takes a stronger hold on it: starting with oyuns killing of isidor, the townsfolk killing women and worms, and then of course the gluttonous spree of the sand pest, inquisitor, and army (and maybe daniils own revolver).

and then the kains do something unexpected: they seem to be actually bringing simon (and nina?) back. the polyhedron, which has just been this weird geometric oddity infested with a militant gang of kids, suddenly becomes the focus (haha) of daniils ambitions. because he is absolutely at the end of his rope. understandably! surrounded by death. barely escaping being killed himself on numerous occasions. news of thanatica destroyed, his research gone. the kain thing is utterly not in line with his past ideals—but if you squint…

in all this cacophony of death, the rebirth or whatever of simon into the polyhedron is a clarion that wakes the zombie remnants of daniils ambitions again. death will be defeated: but no longer for everyone, just this one defeat, this simon.

the polyhedron has been many (mostly terrifying) things to many people, but now to daniil it is his last hope of vindication. he has been completely radicalised. no matter what, the polyhedron must stand.

the kains plans have nothing to do with daniils past ideals, but now he is caught up in them: a small snake trapped in a large spiders web. they pull the strands, and he twitches like a puppet.

there is only one thing left for daniil to do:

on day 12, daniil calls for the death of the entire town and everyone in it, so as to preserve the polyhedron.

so consumed by the polyhedral idea, he cant even see that, far from defeating death for everyone, he is instigating it. causing the last mass death now.

the ending cutscene for daniils “victory” is so bleak: the polyhedron stands,

“Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level steppes stretch far away.”

left to himself, as the powers that be explain, daniil is “always the evil guy when we're playing.”

but that doesnt have to be daniils fate, now that a Player is in the loop. daniil can defeat Death: not perhaps the inevitable death that waits for everyone. but,

but he can defeat the Death of his ideals—the Death of his soul that the kains would have. he can defeat the Death that he would otherwise inflict on the town.

he is, already—somehow, impossibly—more alive than anything else in the game, because of the Player. as teensy says: “Take you, for example-look how it all worked out! You used to be a doll and now you're alive. Perhaps the rest also work like this?”

daniil himself could never hear this. for him to get here, the Player must have been steering daniil to preserve life, to protect all the bound.

and what do the powers that be ask the Player-daniil to do?

“Heal the town, please! Just look, it's so wonderful... It's alive and it's our favourite one... We won't be able to make another one like this. If it can't be helped, then it will disappear forever. You know how much we love it?”

heal the town! dont destroy it. dont fall for the trap, the web that has been spun for you. do not choose your own ending!

and so the only way that daniil has the slightest hope of achieving his goal, of defeating death—

is by giving up on it. not being the one to decide. handing over the reins (puppet strings?) to let artemy or clara have their ending instead.

and that will maybe, probably, not be the Right ending. but at least it will not be the truly Wrong one.
