There's a deep irony in Berserk being so admired by people who really really hate what Berserk is about on an emotional level, but especially when writers want to take influence from it. Because Berserk is very strong thematically, and someone who can't acknowledge subtext is going to whiff on emulating anything good.

#And by that I mean that like many of its influences and descendants the plot is fundamentally driven by toxic gay shit lol #Listen there's just no beating around the bush here: you either understand this type of story is super emotional #That the softness and hope and love for humanity is vital connective tissue between the edgy violent dark setting #And that at its core the queerness is *central*#Or you will just end up creating something toothless and cynical with tokenizing bullshit at best #You cannot make that lightning strike twice if you're too scared to even write that shit as ACTUALLY core to the plot #You don’t have to make your shit gay to be good you just have to understand if your major influence was gay and why #So that you respect subtext and thematic writing and emotional resonance in writing in general #And maybe understand that if you also want credit for pushing the envelope you get where the real standard is #This is one of those things I see in equal measure in dudebro homophobes and supposedly progressive queers #No that wasn't “bait/delusion” it was barely subtext and if you go into writing with that attitude you're going to write shallow shit lol #I genuinely believe when people lament about reading comprehension they're actually talking about willful ignorance #Because willfull ignorance *does* cause a need to deny reality to a point where it warps your ability to understand information #Having difficulty comprehending text from a learning disability or improper teaching #Has fucking nothing on someone whose deliberately trained themselves to rationalize away anything uncomfortable #Tag rant over but this shit really is a plague and you can see it so starkly when it comes to Berserk #An undeniably respectable work from a place many envious little goblins that covet it do not actually respect

this sounds so lame, but it's honestly like. actually upsetting to me that the absolutely INSANE bg3 retcon version of sarevok is the only version of the character 99% of people will ever be aware of. they took what was easily one of the most interesting, complex characters in the history of gaming and did this randomass retcon that completely character assassinated him, rewrote his entire background (and large chunks of the original bg series??), and retconned him into a comically evil, one dimensional, painfully boring cartoon villain for literally NO REASON?????

i know people comparing literally everything to atla is annoying, but genuinely the closest comparison i can think to try to convey how insane this decision was is like. imagine if legend of korra brought zuko back but only for like a 2 minute cameo where they did nothing but make it canon that he went insane immediately after the events of the original series, turned out to be a p/dophile who abused his own daughter, and started working to put his abusive father back on the throne. and then they immediately killed him off and just NEVER brought him or any of that up ever again ??????

been playing bits and pieces of horizon forbidden west! game's pretty as hell

#horizon forbidden west #photo mode #my edits #yannow. it got me thinking too. the npc fidelity in this game is off the fucking shits. never seen anything like it #even secondary dialogues are leaving all the competition in the dust. it's an insane level of work #major burnout red flags for sure. but also maybe talking about engines as specialized tools instead of ubiquitous ones isn;t so bad?#i mean there's definitely trends. ramming down RPGs down frostbite's throat has never worked well #while decima is tearing up the open worlds and tech fidelity quotas like nbd even on prev gen #is it really about implementation at this point #maybe some engines just. work best for certain types of hard goals. and choosing that right is what matters #i pkayed this after ragnarok and that game looks embarassing next to hfw. and I'm not even saying it flippantly. I stand by what i've said #shorter games less scope lower fidelity etc. for healthier dev teams. but this can be a scalability tell tale? maybe using something #like decima can mean an easier time for a standard EA dev cycle *without* hitting these insane fidelity goals. just thinking out loud #cause forever salty about frostbite. probably wrong but hey! I desperately wish to make a rewrite of togainu no chi- one where all routes happen simultaneously, where everyone gets their ending, where characters dont make weird choices just because they're in a bl and we Have to have a sex scene here.... what if Nano raping Akira had more meaning? What if Akira asked him at the end, when he had the whole spiel about choosing your own fate, "why did you rape me? Was That predetermined? You couldve just not done it."

Learning about the experiments through more gradual, impactful ways than a lore dump at gunpoint. Motomi could be the one to make Akira remember things. Giving Akira more painful memories, more reason to be afraid of his blood, more reason to feel affected by what happened- he's stuck fixing other people's traumas throughout the game and we don't get to learn enough about him. And he s weirdly well adjusted and opinionated for the character thats meant to be apathetic and cold...

Rin getting more screentime. Shiki being more than a one note villain. Giving Akira more agency instead of him just running around and stumbling upon the next plot point. Keisuke not just fucking instantly dying after surviving rein, giving Him more agency...

I don't know how i'd end the story. I d probably be biased, for example i d never have akira be with shiki at the end, but i d want to pick the one thats the most satisfying narrative-wise, and that feels like it'd be nano or keisuke.

Idk i just. Nitrochi give me the rights to togainu no chi im gonna make this so good just pls respond to my emails-
