Neil Gaiman, co-author of Good Omens:
My first encounter with Terry Pratchett was The Colour of Magic, as read on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. I was a young journalist and I reached out to his publisher for an interview, and thus became the first journalist to interview Terry Pratchett, in Bertorelli's Italian restaurant, in Gower Street. (We remembered it as a Chinese Restaurant in Goodge Street, demonstrating either the fallibility of memory or our fondness for Chinese food.) We became friends.
I was lucky enough to read Terry's books as he wrote them, to become one of his beta readers, and then to collaborate with him. Terry had a brilliant eye for the places where reality and narrative tradition intersect: he had a science fiction writer's mind, let loose on a fantasy world, and he loved to explain and show how things came to be. The last time we saw each other he told me I had to read a book about feeding Nelson's navy – and I still wonder, had he lived, about the Discworld novel he would have written, about ships, and naval battles and all, and the lessons he would have taught us. Because at his best, Terry was a teacher. The kind who makes you laugh while simultaneously realising that everything you have taken for granted so far is utterly wrong. I miss him.

Okay so I love all of the cap identity reveal stories. Obviously. The anticipation of the reactions, the fact that someone they’ve known for so long, someone they’ve fought with and laughed with and cried with, is not even half their age…
But what if they NEVER found out? Cap’s identity, I mean.
I don’t mean life just continues on with Billy leading his separate lives. It’s more like(this next part is so fucking drastic lol) the league thinks cap is dead and suffer with the hole he left behind, only to somehow find out he’s alive, and to add fuel to the fire, he’s a young radio host in Fawcett.
The JL( and other heroes if you want) are fighting a being with incredibly powerful magic. I’m not good with the specifics, but it lines up with someone like Lady Blaze. The YJ team are acting as reconnaissance and backup. Everyone’s doing their part, including Cap.
But then something goes wrong. A miscalculation is all it takes for the fight to spin in the villain’s favor. Magic is a fickle thing. One wrong move, and sparks will fly with reckless abandon.
The fight is nearing an end, and it’s clear that almost all the heroes have been rendered useless. They’re either limping up to go again, or unconscious from the strain.
Everyone but Captain Marvel, that is.
To bring an end to the fight, Cap unleashes a powerful stream of magic, something no one has ever seen him pull off. It seems to zap everything out of him. The next thing you know he’s falling, his body slowly disintegrating. He makes it to the floor and smiles at the other heroes, all of whom are crying their hearts out as gold dust replaces him, for divine beings have no blood.
Billy, on the other hand, is fucking pissed. Apparently, Shazam created a failsafe in case something like this happens. He wakes up in the rock, unable to transform. His magic is still there, and with Solomon’s help he learns that his champion form will return after a couple years. For now, he needs to rest his reservoir.
Now, you’d think he would go tell the league, right?
But he’s not so little anymore, and he now knows that him being younger won’t be the only issue. Younger him was only worried about that little tidbit, but in truth, there was no guarantee they would let him stay if they knew he’d been lying so much. If he’d been able to keep his age a secret for so long, what else could he be hiding?
It’s not something he wants to do. The League, the YJ team, the Titans, they’ve all become like a family to him, despite almost all of them(barring the magic heroes) not knowing who he is. But he can’t risk being watched by parental hawks whenever he’s doing his champion work as Billy. He can’t risk them learning about his… circumstances. His crappy uncle, his annoying cousin, his(an oc I created for this post specifically but dw he’s not that important) crooked cop of a younger-older cousin. His living situation, his previous state of malnutrition, and all of his responsibilities. What a nightmare that would be, explaining all of that.
Also, he tries not to sound too cocky in his head, but he’s fairly sure at least a little less than half of the JL would kill for him. Or at least they’d beat someone to a pulp, which is still a pretty big deal.
So, he washes his hands of the JL and the sub teams and handles his champion work(bar fighting now cause his other body needs to regenerate) in his civilian form. It helps that the magic community, all sides of the spectrum, collectively decide not to tell the other heroes that their Champion is alive. They can get really annoying when it comes to their Boy Scout 🙄.
Plot, plot, plot happens. I’m thinking maybe Whiz gets an opportunity to interview JL members and they send their best reporter for the job. Or maybe something happens on the magic spectrum that brings them closer to Billy. Either way, the JL finds out Cap’s identity without Billy knowing and they are PISSED.
Billy has to deal with countless vigilantes, heroes, and teams lounging on his couch trying to goad him into revealing who he is. Either that r they follow him throughout Fawcett. Some people are angry with him, like Conner or either of the Roys. They try to make him angry. They want to see the real Cap, the real Billy(which is stupid cause of course cap isnt a fake persona but they’re too mad to realize).
Others feel betrayed, like Artemis and Wally(I refuse to acknowledge his death). Cap was a best man at the wedding and they really started to look to him as a sort of father figure. In fact, all the younger heroes love how he stood up for them and validated their feelings. To know that so much of their worries were being shouldered by someone who was years younger than them…
And the JL is worse off too. Their coworker, who they trusted and cared for, had been living alone since he was a child. Having to save for scraps until he finally got a home of his own.
The magic users are practically waiting for Billy to blow a fuse at everyone either fussing over him, attempting to make him mad, or following him whenever they felt the need. Mary’s laughing her ass off and Freddy’s smirking because now he can say “I told you so”. Shazam’s shaking his head because he told his damn protege that the champion doesn’t DO teams, but look where they are now.
Teth is honestly ecstatic. Comes to the next higher ups meeting and laughs in Billy’s face.
And Billy? Billy at least hopes he can make some money off of this: Okay but if I let you stay on my couch for the next three hours, that’s gonna cost you.
No no, I’ll let you follow me, but only if you do this one interview.
Maybe just stop trying to make me mad and just talk to me? Like I get you have issues but I already have a shit load of that so…

i was on NPR talking about Autism shit two weeks ago, and i have the book sales figures from that week and that national media appearance had.... absolutely zero relationship to sales. on the typical week these days, 1,400 to 1,500 copies of Unmasking Autism will sell. The week that I was on NPR there was a slight dip; only about 1,300 books were sold.
i have done a lot of press for my books. For Laziness Does Not Exist I did easily a 100 damn podcasts and radio shows and newspapers and excerpts in magazines. none of it corresponded to a noticeable bump in sales. the biggest "get" my publicist found for my latest book was the Glennon Doyle show, a booking she and her team celebrated and then spent months clamboring excitedly for... it, too, had no obvious relationship to sales.
Unmasking Autism became a bestseller because some other guy made a tiktok about it, and then a bunch of tiktokkers made videos about it too. all on their own. without any prodding from me, or any relationship to me. it was completely organic, passionate, and sincere, and rooted in the book's true merits and usefulness to other people, and that's why it inspired lots of sales. and continues to more than a year and a half later. all the press I did for Unmasking Autism prior to the release of that tiktok did relatively far less. NPR, Goop, the LA Times, Lit Hub, Jacobin, Huffpo, the New York Times, the Financial Times, MSNBC, Business Insider. Didn't matter. at least not much. so why do i bother?
publishers really ride your ass trying to make you give lots of interviews and show up for lots of events but it's all based on the worship of traditional media and magical thinking that it will somehow convert listeners into buyers. and that's just not how it works. the truth is 95% of books never sell more than 5,000 copies, and most people don't buy books or read them. i love reading but i dont think this is itself some terrible loss, as most books are padded-out commodities made for sale more than a work of true artistic passion or scholarly merit, and sometimes listening to a 90 minute interview with an author tells you the bulk of what you need to know.
it's freeing to know that the effort i put into getting my books out into the world have almost zero relationship to the books' success. marketing just does not work. it's a relief. unmasking autism did fabulously because it's actually both good and useful. laziness has had a long life span because it speaks to real problems in people's lives and gives them a message they are desperate to hear. but no amount of thirsty ass online shilling will make somebody realize that and it's maddening to try. you just gotta focus on doing good work, work that you enjoy making or need to make and that you feel good about, let things flop if theyre gonna flop, and keep on living your life.
which is all good news because i really do hate a lot of these fucking interviews. how can i stomach being on npr or in the atlantic or whatever these days given how complicit nearly all major media outlets are in justifying this genocide. like who fuckin cares about them, who wants their approval. who needs it. it's of no value

Another week another race and as it usually is with the European races Nattie is in attendance. She has taken to being in the garage where some family members are attending. If it's Max’s family she's in the RedBull garage, if it's one of Cecilia's she's in the Merc garage. The girl always has a merch item of the team she's in the garage for, admins of both teams have taken to fighting for her on social media calling her theirs. But if you ask Nattie what team she likes most she'd say Ferrari, all thanks to Charles. The monegasque is one of the couple's closest friends and for some reason he has such an effect on their daughter, Max has been trying for her to say RedBull for a long time but she's refusing. She's seen her parents train and drive. It's normal for her but Charles is just magical to her, as if he’s doing something completely different to them.
Anyways Cecilia had to DNF due to a mechanical failure early in the race, she had finished her media duties and was back in the garage watching the rest of the race, after she dropped into RedBull to get her daughter from Victoria, the cameras made sure to capture the moment and so with her RedBull merch on Nattie watched the rest of the race from Mercedes.
There's a moment at the end of the race where Max and another driver come in contact with each other and everyone is holding their breath as their eyes stay on the screens watching. Max’s car spins around but he doesn't hit any walls, there's a bit of damage to his front wing but he swirls the car around and continues with the race. Cecilia could only imagine what his radio was sounding like at this moment.
“Maman!” Nattie calls for her mother, she has her headphones on looking super cute, but her eyes are wide and starting to tear up.
Cecilia is alarmed, afraid that something might have happened while she was focusing on the screen.
“What is it, mon ange?” She's checking her daughter for any sign of harm.
“Daddy?” She asks, her lips trembling as she points at the screen.
“Oh baby, daddy's okay,he's fine.” Cecilia says and sees Max crossing the finish line coming P2.
“Look, he even made it to the podium.” Cecilia tries to calm her daughter but Nattie seems startled, tears start leaving her eyes. Cecilia sighs and takes her daughter in her arms. Admittedly Nattie is starting to be too large for her to keep carrying her and she's thankful for all the training she goes through because it kept her carrying her daughter comfortably. Cilia takes Nattie to her driver room and tries to calm her down but it seems like there's no stopping her. 10 minutes later when she's still crying Cecilia makes the executive decision to go ask Victoria for help. So she makes it to RedBull, she's led to Victoria by a RedBull personal, always making sure she's not walking around the garage and stealing ideas and data. Once Victoria sees her niece crying she makes her way to the blondes.
“What happened?” Victoria asks the mother.
“She’s been crying since Max took that turn.” Victoria tries to calm the girl down but to no avail, Checo's wife was walking around when she saw them struggling and tried to calm the girl but he also failed, it became a thing where everyone tried to do their own thing but Nattie wouldn't stop. Cecilia was admittedly getting frustrated.
“I don't think she'll calm down before she sees Max.” Victoria says and Cecilia couldn't help but agree. Nattie has been saying daddy over and over again.
“Is Max doing his post interview yet?” Cecilia asks one of the females standing around her, she worked for the press team for RB. When she told the driver no, Cecilia left the garage and made her way to where the post interview for the podium finishers took place.
They were about to start, Max with his super dad hearing heard the wailing of his little girl and the smile he had on his face dropped and his face snapped to where the sound was coming from. His eyes fell on a tired and frustrated looking girlfriend, and his daughter. A lot of eyes went to the female walking in, she was already showered and in her team kit since her earlier DNF. Nattie had refused to be carried now and was throwing a tantrum along with her crying. Once she sees Max though on stage she runs up to him. Max instantly gets up from his spot and scoops her up. He angles himself so no one could see her. Cecilia makes it on stage apologising for crashing the interview real quick before she walks up to Max.
“She's been crying thinking you're hurt after that little thing in the last lap, wouldn't stop.” Cecilia stressed. “I'm sorry Max.”
“It's okay, you go, I'll take care of her.” Max comforts his frustrated girlfriend and she leaves the stage but stays close by just out of sight in case she's needed.
Max sits down with Nattie in his lap. Once again he apologises for the interruption and asks Lewis who was answering a question to go on. Lewis does continue but all eyes were still on Max and the now calmer girl.
“It's okay schatje, daddy is okay.” Max whispers in her ear, his hand rubbing up and down her back in comfort. “Nothing happened to me, I'm okay.”
It takes a few moments but Nathalie calms down, but as she calmed down, her energy also calmed down and seemed to seep away from her. Her red and puffy eyes are struggling to stay open, with Max's arms rubbing her back and her comfortably sitting on hir lap she falls asleep, she doesn't wake up when Max takes the microphone to speak or when everyone laughs at her soft snores being picked up through the microphone.
Little Nathalie just wanted to make sure that her dad is okay. Cecilia felt a hand on her shoulder, when she turned she saw Lando, he saw his friend on screen after he did the media pit and felt bad for the mother, just with the little clip shown she looked tired.
”Let’s go, Max got her.” Lando said, pulling her away from the wall she was leaning on.
”But-“
”No buts come on.” It didn’t take long for Cecilia to concede and follow the brit, Lando had arm around her shoulder as they walked around, there were some fans around but they left the drivers alone, thankfully. as they’re walking they see a screen showing the interviews happening right now. “She’s so cute.”
”Yeah, but man can she cry, almost piercing my eardrum.” Cecilia complained but watched with a smile, Max was running a hand through her hair, and if you weren’t seeing him you wouldn't know that he had a sleeping girl on his lap.
“Max is such a girl’s dad.” Lando comments with a grin, Cecilia laughs but couldn’t agree more.
“And Nattie is such a daddy’s girl these days.” Cecilia says with a roll of her eyes.
”From what I’m hearing she’s a Charles girl.” Cecilia again laughs and nods with Lando. “Which I’m hurt about.”
”Get in line, she wants to be in Ferrari each week, Max almost had a heart attack when he heard her the first time.”
”Well, everyone’s a Ferrari fan.”
“I guess so.”

In one mission the justice league needed to be close-nit but widespread at the same time, and comms were compromised at the place their mission was set in. Batman had the idea to ask John Constantine about any spells that links multiple people's minds together. Everyone's gonna be okay with this cause y'know they know each and others Identities and stuff except for..
Captain Marvel. To escape the fate of telling the JL about his identity he made then believe he was an ageless God who was magic incarnate, it is believable cause it was shown that there's paintings about the suit even dating back to the stone age.
Billy who's just freaking out had to agree to it cause it would've been VERY suspicious if he didn't, but he thought as long as he stayed in the captain Marvel form everything would've been alright..
There they were. Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman, The flash, Green Lantern, Plastic man (For whatever reason), and.. Billy well in the hero form of course. Stood in a room as the chain-smoking exorcist casted some sort of magic thing that will bind their minds together. And it finally happened, they could each here eachothers own thoughts and stuff.
Plastic man: Hey? Who's voice is that??
Crap. He didn't think about the heavenly twitch cha- no, the God's voices.
Flash: ...Is there a little kid in here, what does he mean by God's?
Zeus: !!! They can hear our voices..
A series of gods jumbled into surprise and started to talk, talk ALOT filling up most of their minds.
And that started a chain reaction with the JL they all started questioning each other, Luckily no one payed attention to Captain who put on his best confused face.
Wonderwoman seemed to be in deep thought.. Why was that voice sound so familiar???
Captain, No Billy was now trying to suppress the God's thoughts, he went into a slight panic abut his identity trying not to think of himself. But you know what happens if you don't wanna think about something? You think about it.
Superman: Who's imagining a young boy right now?
Plastic man: Hm.. Isn't that the Fawcett whizz kid? With the radio show? Wait Captain do you have an interview with him later on?
Captain Marvel changing his thoughts "voice" into his hero persona's ones.
Captain: Oh.. Yeah, yeah definitely. I'm just so excited..
Green Lantern: Hey.. Didn't you appear as a guest last time? How come your appearing again?? This is unfair..
Batman: This is not the point. Captain, do you know where the 5 *He closely listened in to his thoughts* no.. 6 new voices come from? (He most definitely knows about Billy's secret identity one way or another.)
Captain Marvel: Haha no..

Q: I must ask you, Ms Harker, how did Bram Stoker’s story of Dracula get published? Is it true you and your friends were the inspiration?
[MINA LAUGHS] Oh, my dear Bram! I remember when we first met in Cruden Bay in Scotland for a trip and we got on so well. I then invited him to visit me in Whitby, which is where I moved to support Arthur’s new venture after the Carpathians. Bram was very curious about our story,  and we…well, I suppose one thing led to another, and he was anxious to tell a version of it, mostly fabricated you understand, of his very own. To incorporate it into a tale of horror he was already writing. I must admit I was sceptical at first, but the idea intrigued me. Of course, in our real-world story, there was no monstrous being known as Count Dracula, no vampires, and no magic. Just a group of unlikely individuals and a rather terrible set of circumstances. But Arthur convinced me it would aid us in establishing the Foundation, and nothing in the world meant more to us than that. So we gave Bram permission to use our likenesses, and he even studied our writings and manners to ensure he could capture us on the page. I remember discussing with Arthur if we should have changed our names, changed who we were, but the release of the story, outrageous and horrifying as some of the details were, did introduce more people to the importance of blood and blood work. We were able to find many patrons to support us due to the release of Dracula, and while it has certainly made my life much stranger than it could have been, I was never truly upset by the book's legacy. I know Abraham - Professor Van Helsing's – nieces and nephews love to see how their uncle is presented as this dramatic vampire hunter! Sometimes, I wish Bram hadn’t changed so many details, particularly the ending, but I am not myself a writer, so I had faith in his words. Given the loss of my dear husband, Jonathan, at just 24 years old, I sometimes feel that a part of him lives on, caught like a pressed flower between the pages of that book. All I know for sure is that I have faith in what Arthur, Abraham, Jack, and I have created. We are honoured to work with the public to save lives, as we have done for the last 40 years.
