Hello lovely! Can I request Marlene McKinnon with b1+11 please? 🫶🫶
of course you can<33 my fav girl marls
Prompt: B1. "I require at least a thousand kisses to make up for it" & B.11 "Come back to bed"
Words: 1.5k
Warnings/tags: fem!reader, not proofread, idiots in love, established relationship, morning kisses, cuddles, quidditch player!marlene, loving jokes at james' expense, background marylily, very background prongsfoot, implied gryffindor!reader (you share a dorm)
While there were no limits to what you loved about Marlene, on cold winter nights spent in an ancient castle with terrible isolation, her running hot as a furnace ranked high on any potential list.
It had been months since you decided to push your beds together in the dorm and spell the gap between the mattresses away, and you had yet to stop commending yourselves for the idea. Practically every night before you went to sleep, Marlene would mumble about "what a bright witch must have thought of this", and you never knew whether she was referring to you in a flirty way or herself in a self-congratulatory way, seeing as you thought of it together. You usually didn't call her out on it though, too busy grinning so hard your gums hurt.
You were also too busy having Mary fling pillows in your direction as she begged you to "stop being so lovey-dovey". With quiet whispers, you and Marlene would giggle about how her tune would likely change whenever she finally confesses her feelings to Lily and could follow in your footsteps.
In the meantime, you had a large bed, warm blankets that the four of you dyed cute patterns into at the start of term – the traditional way without magic, just like Lily taught you – and a beautiful soft girl in your arms. It was the perfect haven; a motivating start to the day and a reprieve from the weathers at night.
That is, until Marlene tries to get up at 6 AM to attend quidditch practice.
Again, on the list of what you love about your girlfriend, her commitment and loyalty were high on the list, the two qualities that truly drove her in her sports achievements. She was a pleasure to watch on the field in more ways than one, and you were there to cheer her on for every single match, painting both your and her cheeks in vibrant red and gold.
However, when you were swept up in a heavenly cocoon of plush fabric and delicate skin, the smell that was so distinctly Marlene swirling in your nose and your mind, the mere suggestion that it should be broken even before the break of dawn felt like a death sentence.
You let her know as much.
"Marls, please," you whined, not caring that your voice was hoarse with sleep and your eyes weren't even open. You had just barely registered the kisses peppered to your hairline that already carried an air of goodbye and Marlene beginning to move.
“I’ll be back before you know it,” she whispered against your skin before kissing it and removing her hands from around your waist.
You scurried after her and doubled down your own grip on her with surprising strength for someone not yet truly awake. "Marlene, baby, don't go." You weren’t entirely aware of what you were saying, just that you were begging and that you honestly stood by it – this was no time to leave.
You must be slurring your words because she began to giggle and her hand on the back of your neck came forward to brush over your cheeks and even squeeze them a little. "'M sorry my love, duty calls. You just sleep on, princess."
Another kiss to your hairline. You clung onto her harder and made a noise of distinctive disagreement.
One thing you had come to learn about Marlene over the years is that if she had not been sorted into Gryffindor, she would have been placed straight in Slytherin. Because this cunning sly witch made a sympathetic cooing sound, gathered you back up in her arms, and began rocking you ever so slightly back and forth. Only half your brain was awake – if that – to begin with, and within seconds your entire world was just your nose against Marlene's neck, her lips along your cheek and ear and the faint sound of her humming a Scottish lullaby.
You were swallowed by the abyss while wrapped up in love, and you would have stayed in the pit of its stomach had it not been for the gust of icy wind that brushed your face, some unknown time later.
With a low groan you opened your eyes into mere slits, trying to focus your gaze on the small commotion before you. There you were met with the sheepish smile of your lovely and traitorous girlfriend as she had just stood up from the bed and begun to pull on her red wool socks.
"Marlene. That was mean." You grumbled, but even so, you pulled the blankets closer around you as you shimmied clumsily to her side of the bed.
Immediately upon the reunion, Marlene's surprisingly warm hand went to caress your cheek where you looked up at her, scrutinising. "Sorry lovely, I wanted you to sleep." She pouted at you to make your frown wash away into a smile. "I have to get to quidditch practice with James in 30."
"I know you do." With a match against Slytherin coming up, James had the team practicing once or twice per day, at what you had promptly labelled ungodly hours. "But right now you have a cuddling appointment with me. Come back to bed."
You took advantage of her hand on your cheek to reach up towards her upper arm and shoulders and try to jostle her down towards you. Marlene chuckled quietly, trying to be careful not to wake your other two friends who were decidedly not known for being bright and cheery in the morning, and sat down beside you on the bed yieldingly.
You were ambushed by her peppering kisses across your face, each one its own silent silly apology. When she brushed her lips towards your own, you gave in for a few seconds before turning your head away.
"I haven't brushed my teeth yet," you mumbled begrudgingly.
She quickly stilled your head’s movement with her hand and pulled it back towards hers, chasing after your lips. "Don't care, c'mere."
The kiss was the kind of domestic one that made you want to giggle uncontrollably despite knowing that you really shouldn't – though, if you did, Marlene would have joined you in a heartbeat. Marlene’s lips had the most beautifully prominent cupid’s bow you had seen, and you could feel the press of it against your own upper lip, could feel her smile and her love and her wish to stay with you.
You latched onto the last one.
“Just a little bit,” you mumbled against her lips as you snuck your hands up under her Heart sleep shirt to spread across her toned back and encourage her to lay down on top of you. “Five minutes, just five minutes.”
There was not an ounce of embarrassment in you for how much you wanted her with you, and there was not an ounce of judgment in her. A wolfish, pleased grin spread across her face as she relented and snuck under the blankets to lay comfortably on top of you, slotted between your legs with your chests pressed together. “Just five minutes, you say?” She spoke in between quick kisses, defined eyebrows raised at you teasingly.
“Mmm, maybe ten.” You didn’t bother hiding your smile, instead hooking your pinkies behind her ears to pull her face back up towards yours.
Marlene laughed into your mouth at a dangerous volume – thankfully you didn’t mind swallowing it with a kiss. You’re welcome Lily and Mary.
When you came apart, Marlene leaned her forehead against yours and heaved a theatrically overdone sigh, looking up at you through her lashes. “Whatever my girl wants, huh?”
Without giving you a chance to reply, she hooked an arm around your neck and one around your lower back before flinging herself sideways to flop back down on the bed, bringing you with her in her arms. It was a practised manoeuvre, one that landed you with your face in the crook of her neck and side pressed against her warm body, one that never failed to bring butterflies to your stomach.
You stared up at her as if she hung the moon, knowing full well that she was the sun.
The love must have been evident on your face because hers melted into a soft puddle before bringing your chin up with a finger beneath it to kiss you sweetly. “I love getting my way with you,” you teased, causing Marlene to snort.
“Yeah, I know you do,” she said dreamily. “But if you make me late to quidditch practice, I require at least a thousand kisses to make up for it.”
“Just for you, or does James need some as well?”
Marlene made a sound that effectively communicated gross that’s like my brother as she smacked your arm lightly, but you just laughed, holding her closer to you and kneading the flesh of her back contently. “You should enlist Sirius to give James his own thousand-fold kisses.”
“I reckon that will be easy enough,” you whispered, still laughing as you kissed along her cheek and jaw. “You drive a hard bargain, but I accept your conditions, McKinnon.”
Marlene shook her head and looked down at you with a gaze that was nothing short of lovesick. “What have I gotten myself into?”

Like The Movies
Sirius Black x Bookworm!Reader

——————— ⋆☆ ˚⟡˖ ࣪ ———————
Summary: You meet a mysterious man in a bookshop who falls for your sunshine personality…
Warnings: Nothing serious (pun intended), grumpy x sunshine dynamic, Marlene once again being the best wingman (it’s a tradition atp), reader is referred to as a girl with she/her pronouns, reader is oblivious to Sirius’ flirting.
Word count: 0.7K
Masterlist
A/N: I couldn’t get this meet cute idea out of my head so I had to write it! Basically all fluff and no plot, Sirius just thinks you’re adorable <3
——————— ⋆☆ ˚⟡˖ ࣪ ———————
Ding!
The bell above the bookshop’s door rang in an echoing call as you stepped inside, a giddy smile spread across your face. You had finally finished your summer reading list, with a chilled breeze marking the end of your book-buying ban.
Preparing to hibernate in your cosy bedroom with a stack of classics, you skipped your way through the aisles to the counter of the store’s joint cafe.
Ordering a hot drink to keep off the chill of the midday breeze, you flashed a grateful grin at the blonde behind the counter as you rounded the aisles, making a beeline for the classic fiction.
You stumbled through the maze of novels, making mental notes of each book you had already read. You found yourself passing three aisles before you discovered a title you didn’t recognise.
Lifting the book to flick through the pages, your gaze intuitively lifted at the presence of someone further down the aisle.
That’s when you saw him.
A dark stroke of hair dropped down his shoulders, collecting in sweet spirals at his chest. His bright eyes held a dark splash of mischief in their depths as he towered over the shelves. His gaze was focused on the book in his hand, eyes flicking over the blurb on the back cover.
Peering over with curiosity, your eyes lit up at the title on the front as he flipped the book in his hands. “That’s my favourite! I’ve read it six times,” you blurted at the mystery man.
His gaze flicked to yours in an instant, a flash of surprise gracing his features before he relaxed into a soft smirk at the sight of you. “Would you recommend it, Dove?” He spoke with a lighthearted and teasing tone as he leisurely stepped closer to your ecstatic self.
“Absolutely! It’s a masterpiece, the author is so talented! You should totally read it,” you rambled, not catching the amusement mixed with adoration in the stranger’s eyes as he watched you.
His head tilted to the side like a curious puppy, listening intently as you gushed over the plot, the characters, the handsome romantic lead, and the optimistic heroine.
He slyly reached for a second copy of the same book on the shelf as you spoke, tucking it under the one already settled in his grasp. You were in your own world at this point, and the man couldn’t help but fluster at your adorable excitement over words on a page. What is this girl doing to me? he mentally asked himself.
She’s got me wrapped around her finger and she doesn’t even know it.
He was beginning to grow soft.
——————— ⋆☆ ˚⟡˖ ࣪ ———————
You eventually remembered to introduce yourself after a series of rambled facts about the book tumbled out of your mouth. The stranger found you to be the most endearing creature he’d ever met.
“I’m-“
“Sirius? Y’Iced latte’s ready!” He hurried over to the blonde behind the counter who finished his sentence, flashing you an apologetic smile over his shoulder with a slight blush to his cheeks.
Marlene’s gaze fell on the books held tightly in his hands with an arched eyebrow. “Sirius Black, reading a book? My, I thought I’d never see the day!” He laughed while motioning for her to keep her voice down, leaning in closer while you browsed.
“It seems I’ve taken a liking to the little bookworm over there, wriggled her way right into my heart,” he motioned towards you with a smirk as Marlene spots you curiously reading the blurbs of various classics. “Said this was her favourite,” he held up the books in his hands with an uncharacteristically bashful smile, brushing the gesture off nonchalantly. “Didn’t have the heart to tell her I was buying it for Moony’s birthday.”
Marlene rolled her eyes, passing him his drink along with a napkin and a pen. “You’re hopeless, Black, really,” she whispered, turning around to pick up another order.
His eyes lit up at the sight of the pen, “You really do know me well, Marls! And to think I only keep you around for the coffee,” he quipped, though his tone held no bite. He scribbled on the napkin before Marlene passed your drink into his grasp, sending her a final look of gratitude before turning back to you.
“Here you go, love. Now, what was that sequel about again? What happens next?” You glanced up as he handed you your drink with a sweet grin, oblivious to the napkin sitting on top with a phone number scrawled across it, waiting to be discovered as you launched into an explanation with a giggle.
“Wait- no! I can’t tell you, spoilers!”

Training for the Ballet Potter?🩰
summary: James Potter x Reader, James takes a ballet class and crushes on the teacher (you)
cw: sexist remarks? it is kind of just gender stereotypes of ballet I guess, i didn't proof read this so just pretend it's good for me
word count: 2.6K

James thought that he might actually quit. This was ridiculous in every sense of the word. It was humiliating and a cruel punishment for sure.
His quidditch coach had the brilliant idea of signing the whole team up for ballet classes. Ballet, as in, turns and tiptoes and tights. This was emasculating to him, so beneath his training and dedication to the sport he should be practicing.
His coach announced the classes on the last day of spring training. He stated that they were to attend every class until their season starts, no exceptions. He went on and on about how it would benefit the team to become more agile and graceful. But James didn’t understand the logic at all, he needed to be quick, strong, sturdy. Not exactly what ballerinas are known for.
His coach emphasized the fact that these lessons were mandatory by stating that those who fail to attend would be cut from the team. He was not joking. A few of his teammates tried to protest, but his coach made the ultimatum. He said that if they wanted to be professionals and play on this prestigious team, they would learn grace and elegance in their training.
James loved and valued his position on the team, so he wasn't so fast to say no to these lessons. He was also trying to become captain of the team this year, and pretending to be excited and grateful for these lessons seemed like a way to earn him some brownie points.
So he pretended to the best of his abilities, he got the team together to encourage or change their attitudes, saying that it would be a great experience for the summer and that it was only three months of these lessons. Well, two lessons every week for three months, but that still wasn’t too bad.
When the coach overheard some of the team still complaining about ballet, he made them run and condition until half of them were throwing up. He was not here to play about these lessons.
“Got your leotard?” Sirius teased James from the couch. He had his head resting in Remus’s lap.
James had lived with his two best friends since the end of school and he couldn’t be happier. Well, he could do with a little less of the making out and the groping he would catch every now and then, but he couldn’t blame them both, they were happy and in love. He just… didn’t need to see it all the time. And now, he didn’t need to be teased to add insult to injury.
“No.” James replied, rolling his eyes. He grabbed his red workout bag with his team’s logo from the opposite couch that his friends were sitting on and slung it over his shoulder.
“I think it’ll be good for you, Prongs,” Remus chimed in, “You could learn a thing or two about grace.”
James again rolled his eyes. He wasn’t in the mood, he was sore from yesterday’s practice, and was now about to prance around like an idiot for an hour.
“I just need to get through this,” James said. “I want to look good when my coach is choosing captains this season.”
“Anything for that position, eh, Prongsie?” Sirius chuckled from Remus’s lap. “Look on the bright side though, you’ll be surrounded by fit girls in tight clothes and tiny skirts.”
Remus smacked the top of his head for the comment, earning an ‘ouch’ and small apology. Remus rolled his eyes this time, annoyed by his lover’s crude statement.
James supposed that there was that to look forward to, he would never say it out loud like Sirius, but he was… intrigued by the idea. His male teammates were all put into the Monday/Wednesday classes with a strict teacher apparently. He was selected for the Tuesday/Thursday classes, which he found out were much smaller and taught by a new, younger teacher. A few of his teammates made sure to let him know how lucky he in fact was, the Monday/Wednesday teacher sounded like a hard-ass and a mean old witch.
Another bright side of the classes was that he would be with Marlene, one of his best friends on the team. If he had to endure this torture, he was glad to do it with her at least. It was actually Marlene who was picking him up so they could go to the lesson together. She should be here in about… now.
James bid farewell to his friends and raced out the door before any of the last minute teasing could make it to his ears, and rushed out to where Marlene was waiting in her car for him.
“Hey,” he greeted her, sliding into the passenger seat of her car which felt much too tiny for him to squeeze into.
“Ready for the ballet Potter?” she giggled, wiggling her brows as she put the car in drive. James found it quite humorous, the two of them, going to their first ballet lesson. The two of them who look like they should keep far away from anything to do with ballet. James, who was a 6’1 burly man with all the elegance of a rhino and knocked into possibly every piece of furniture he owned on a daily basis, and Marlene, with chipped black nails and a self-cut mullet who looks like she would eat the posh little ballerinas for lunch.
Sooner than he would have liked, they reached the dance studio. Marlene parked and they both just sat there for a moment breathing in deep. He turned to her and saw the look that he himself was wearing. One of regret and annoyance.
“Come on Marls, it's an hour and then we’re done.’’ James reminded her.
She groaned but opened her door and slipped out.
They both made their way to the door of the building. He opened it and allowed Marlene to walk through first, pretending that it was just a courteous, gentlemanly thing to do, but in all reality, he was just holding onto any time he could have left not doing ballet.
He stepped into the building and into a crowded area with chairs and fake plants, a waiting room for the parents coming to pick up their little ballerinas from lessons. The waiting room was littered with moms scrolling on their phones and looking at their watches. Great.
James and Marlene had to wait for the teacher to come get them and escort them into the correct studio. Marlene plopped herself in a chair and motioned for James to do the same, but he just stood and lingered around the area.
James heard a door open and the chatter and giggles of many children. He heard many “Thank you miss Y/N”s and “Bye miss Y/N”s followed by a flood of little girls all dressed in colorful leotards and skirts filling the waiting room. The children all ran up to their respective mothers and told them about their lesson and how nice their new teacher was and that they all got stickers and how fun everything was. Some of the little girls eyed James and Marlene up and down, Marlene just stared back until the girls got scared and ran over to their adult.
As soon as the chaos broke into the little waiting room, it left. The last little girl put on her pink sparkly light up shoes and bounded out the door with her parent. This reassured everything that James had already felt; that this was useless, meant for little girls. Definitely not quidditch players, definitely not James.
He heard the door open again and turned to see a small woman, about his age, walk out with a clipboard. Her hair was pulled up into a bun. She was clad in a pink leotard and matching pink skirt, light pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. She was pretty, not in a typical perfect ballerina way, but in an entirely different way. James was definitely not expecting someone like her to be in a studio like this, let alone to be teaching.
Her eyes snapped up from what she was reading on her clipboard and instantly lit up.
“Oh hello!” she squeaked. “Are you two here for the 4:00 class?”
“Uh, yeah.” James replied.
“Perfect! You’re right on time. I’m Y/N, by the way, I’ll be your instructor. You can follow me right in here to studio B.” she said, motioning them to follow her down the hall to the studio. Marlene stood and the both followed. “And here we are,” She said, turning on the light switch, allowing for a better view of the studio.
It was a very small room with light hardwood floors, mirrors lining the back wall. There were mats stacked up in the corner and two parallel bars mounted on the two walls without mirrors.
“You two can go ahead and set your stuff on the wall with the mirrors and then we can get started with stretching.” she announced chipper.
“Aren’t we going to wait for the rest of the class to show up?” Marlene asked from beside James.
“Oh no, you two are the whole class.” She smiled. “You can think of it more like a private lesson, more one on one.”
Private ballet lessons… Sirius was going to have a field day. He looked over at Marlene who just shrugged and made her way to the mirror wall to set her stuff down. James followed.
“It’s just us?” James whisper yelled to Marlene, trying not to let the instructor hear.
“Is that a problem?” Marlene asked back. “She’s hot.”
James just huffed and pulled off his jacket, tossing it in his bag.
“Look Potter, think of it this way,” She tried to reason with him, “Now there’s less people to look like an idiot in front of. All of the embarrassing moves will stay just between us three.” She smiled and James nodded his head, feeling like maybe it was a blessing to be in such a small class. “But… I can’t promise I won't make fun of you or use it against you.” She joked.
“Alright, are you both ready?” Y/N asked sweetly. They both nodded and made their way to the center of the room where she was waiting for them. “Alright first things first, welcome to ballet! My name is Y/N, you don't have to call me Miss or anything like the little ones do, just Y/N is fine” She said, her eyes glowing.
Marlene was right, she was hot. But James wouldn’t be that forward about it, she was incredibly beautiful. If James could do with a touch of grace, she was bathed in it, dripping in it. She radiated confidence and elegance. James didn’t know what to do with his hands all of a sudden.
“I understand that your coach has signed you both up?” She asked. Marlene nodded in confirmation. “Ok, that is perfectly fine, we teach a lot of different athletes here at this studio. But in all honesty, I am a bit new to all of this,” She blushed, looking to the floor, “I mostly work with beginner classes and children so, bear with me.”
She looked back at them and smiled. “Now, usually we require ballet shoes, but I won't require them for you two, socks or barefoot will be just fine.” she explained. “It is also better if you could wear things that are a little bit tighter. You don’t have to wear leos, but I need to be able to see the lines of your bodies better, so leggings, shorts, tank tops, those are all great!”
She was so cheery. Not only was she elegant and grateful, but kind and bubbly. James felt this warmth within the pit of his stomach now.
“Lastly, I want you two to have fun. I know that this is very different for you but, I promise I will make it as fun and educational for you so that you benefit the most that you can from this experience.” She finished, eyes sparking again.
“Alright with all that being said, let’s start our warm up!” she said.
Y/N led them through a series of stretches, most just like the ones they did at quidditch practice, others that were uncomfortable and pulled on his tight muscles. She assured them that with time, those stretches would get easier.
After, she led them to the bars mounted on one of the walls. She taught them the different positions of ballet; first, second, third, etc.. She taught them plies and releve, coupe and passe, and other French words he didn’t understand and would need to be repeated to him most likely all summer.
“Good Marlene.” James heard Y/N critique from where she was situated behind him. For all the gripe that she gave, Marlene was actually pretty decent at all this.
All of a sudden James felt hands on his abdomen and back, straightening his back into the correct posture. He was startled but continued on.
“There you go,” Y/N chuckled. “And..” she began but cut herself off by setting her hands atop his broad shoulders, pushing down on them. “You gotta relax, your shoulders are too tense. We don’t want them up by our ears,” She said, demonstrating to him by pulling her own shoulders up. “We want an elongated line from our neck and down our spine.” She explained, relaxing her shoulders and looking perfect.
Next Y/N ran them through some basic turns and steps and they practiced by repeating them across the floor. James couldn’t believe this but, he was actually getting a pretty good workout. He was using muscles he didn’t even know he had, and he knew that if he dared mention that he was sore from ballet in front of Remus and Sirius, they would never let him live it down.
Time actually flew, and class was over before he knew.
“Great job today.” She said to them both, smiling as James caught her eye.
“I heard you give out stickers.” Marlene mentioned, mischief laced in her voice, making Y/N giggle. James loved the sound, decided that he wanted to do anything, everything in his power to hear that again. Hear it forever if he can.
She walked over to where her clipboard lay on the other side of the room, picked it up, then returned to where James and Marlene were now packing up. She peeled off a smiley face that said ‘awesome’ and placed it on Marlene’s shirt. Marlene smiled and started out the door.
Y/N peeled another off, a star that said ‘you did great’ and placed it on James’s shirt. She pressed it into the fabric, making sure it stuck. James felt the warmth of her fingers radiate through his shirt and into his skin.
He smiled at her and made his way after Marlene. He turned back to say “See you Thursday!”
She smiled back, waving goodbye to him and repeating that she would see them on Thursday.
Exiting the studio and climbing back into Marlene’s car, James couldn’t get rid of the goofy smile that etched itself into his face. Marlene looked at him and shook her head. “Don’t make it too obvious, Twinkletoes.” She mocked him with a new and reactive nickname.
“What are you talking about?” James asked, pulling his seatbelt on.
“Your little crush.” Marlene said plainly.
James wasn't going to deny it, so what if he had a little crush on the cute ballet teacher? She was gorgeous and so warm. He liked to see the passion in her eyes when she was explaining ballet to them.
He couldn’t believe it and he would probably never say it out loud but he was excited for his ballet lesson on Thursday.

She was standing with Lily and Marlene in an empty corridor between classes, chatting about anything and everything when the conversation turned on her.
Marlene grinned as she suddenly poked her friend in the side, a light jab. “Have you told Remus how you feel about him yet?” She asked with an all too knowing tone.
Her eyes widen, glancing around in alarm to make sure no one overheard. Once she was sure that she was fine, she turned back to the blonde and spoke in a hushed tone. “You know I can’t do that!”
The other two girls shared a look with one another at her response, grins wide on their faces. Lily put a hand on her arm, a reassuring gesture. “I think you should.”
Marlene added on right after. “It’s been months since you first started talking about him. At this rate you’ll never be able to tell him.”
As alarmed as ever, she responded. “I’m two years younger than him. Two!”
The girls laughed at their friend’s minor outburst, Lily speaking up again shortly after. “That doesn’t matter. Two years is not that big of a difference.”
Marlene nodded in agreement. “We’ve seen the way his eyes linger on you when you’re not looking.”
“That is…” She shook her head quickly, waving off the girls dramatically. “Not true.”
Lily and Marlene shared another look with one another, not buying their friend’s denial. Lily raised her eyebrows as she spoke. “It is. You don’t notice him watching you, but I do.”
Marlene couldn’t help but to chime in once again. “Even the other Marauders have begun to notice. He’s always more attentive around you.”
She pressed her lips together. “I don’t want to hear anything about my… possible feelings until…” She turned to Lily, “you finally give into James.” She then turned to Marlene, “and until you grow the tits to kiss Dorcas.”
Both girls turned red at her words, not daring to glance at one another. This time, it was Marlene who spoke up first. “Low blow..”
After a moment, Lily shook her head before adding on. “You’re only doing this to change the subject!”
She smiled. “All is fair in this game.”
Lily shook her head, a bit of an annoyed expression on her face. She knew her friend had changed the subject to get out of discussing her feelings for a certain boy. “Ugh, you can only deflect for so long.”
Over the course of the next few days, she had avoided Remus with all of her might, Lily and Marlene’s words repeating in her head like a loop.
She tried and almost succeeded in convincing herself it was better to keep quiet. To believe that two years was some huge age gap that she couldn’t allow. But that all came crumbling when Remus managed to corner her.
It seemed like no matter where she went, Remus would always find her within the castle.
He had noticed her attempts to avoid him. It made him frown. Not only because he felt hurt that she seemed to be trying to evade him, but also because he missed her company. So, he finally had enough and searched high and low until he found her within the library.
She was sitting hunched over studying when he finally found her. He stood in the aisle behind her, silently taking in the sight of her. He hadn’t realized how much he missed her until this moment. He watched her for a minute longer before finally stepping closer, speaking up to catch her attention. “Hey, can we talk?”
She jumped slightly in her seat, not expecting to be disturbed. She glanced up at him, silently telling herself that it wasn’t him. But when her eyes fell upon his face, she took a deep breath. All she could do was nod.
A small, amused smile tugged at his lips as she jumped in surprise, her reaction making his heart skip a beat. The look on her face was one of worry and it made his heart clench. He took a seat next to her, angling his body to face her.
“Why have you been avoiding me?” He immediately questioned, getting straight the point. He figured there was no reason to beat around the bush.
Her lips turned to a frown. “I haven’t been avoiding you.” She denied quickly.
He raised an eyebrow, unconvinced by her denial. “You have. Every time I try to talk to you, you disappear.” He spoke as he leaned back into his chair a bit, studying her face for some sort of clue.
He continued to watch her, his gaze lingering on her face. He took in every feature of hers, each freckle, every curve of her mouth, her eyes and the way they looked anywhere but him. He found himself unable to look away as he spoke again, his voice low and a hint of something was hidden within his tone. “I didn’t realize I made you so uncomfortable.”
“You don’t make me uncomfortable.” She sat up quickly, his statement catching her off guard as she turned her body to face him.
His eyes widened a bit at her sudden reaction. Her words surprised him and he felt a small rush of relief. That was good, right? But he couldn’t just let it go at that. “Then, why are you avoiding me?” He questioned, his tone more gentle.
She let out a small sigh in defeat. She knew she couldn’t avoid this, or him, any longer. “It’s just something Lily and Marlene said. It kind of… kept me in my own head these past few days.”
He found himself intrigued. He knew that the girls were always up to something. He leaned in closer to her, putting an arm on the back of her chair. “What did they say?” He asked quietly.
“What a gossip you are, but I’m afraid I can’t tell you. Girl code.”
He couldn’t help but chuckle, giving a small roll of his eyes at her mention of girl code. He leaned in further, his hand on the back of her chair slowly moving to play with the ends of her hair that fell over it. “I’m sure you can break the rules this once, couldn’t you?” He tried to push, a small smile on his face.
“Nope.” She shook her head slightly. “You don’t break girl code. Ever.”
Another small chuckle escaped him, her words only making him more curious as to what the girls were discussing. He found himself enjoying the conversation between them. It was the most they had talked in days and he realized he missed being able to spend any time with her. He continued, his fingers still playing with the end of her hair absentmindedly. “C’mon, give me a clue at least.”
“It was silly. Just assumptions.” She waved it off. “Not a big deal.”
He could tell that whatever it was, it wasn’t something she considered small. He took her chin between his fingers, gently tilting her head up so she was facing him, getting a better look at her features up close. “If it’s not a big deal, then tell me. I can keep a secret, you know that.” He spoke, his tone bordering onto on the more flirty side as he leaned in a bit closer.
Her breath hitched in her throat and she wanted to cast a curse on herself for the way that her cheeks heated up under his hold.
He was secretly enjoying the way that she became flustered with only a second of his touch. She looked adorable, her cheeks tinged and her breath hitching ever so slightly. It only tempted him even further.
His hand that rested under her chin moved to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear, before slowly trailing down to trace the pad of his fingers against her jawline in silence.
He hummed softly as his fingers continued their motion, slowly sliding down to the side of her neck closest to him, enjoying the soft skin beneath his rough fingers. He continued to study her face as he did so, watching as the red crept further across her face. After a moment, he spoke up, his voice low with a hint of teasing beneath the surface. “You’re blushing.”
“Hardly.” Her voice came out as a stupid stutter.
He couldn’t help the grin that spread across his face, continuing his motions with his fingers, moving down to the exposed skin of her collarbone as he watched her. “I think your face says otherwise.” He spoke lowly, his voice holding a bit of humor.
“Lily says that you watch me.” She blurted out, as if just staring into his brown eyes made her spill the smallest secrets. “Marlene thinks that you like me.”
His eyebrows raised slightly as her words blurted out. He hadn’t expected her to mention such a thing and it made him pause, freezing his movements. Her words caught him by surprise, and for a moment he struggled on finding a way to respond. His heart pounded as he finally found the words, nerves creeping into his system. “And what do you think..?”
“I don’t know…” She answered truthfully.
He gave a small nod, not taking his eyes off of her face. There was a beat of silence between them, her words echoing in his head, but it only lasted for so long.
“I think your friends might be right.”
She hated the way the butterflies started to swarm in her stomach, leaving a weird sensation to her body. She sucked her bottom lip in between her teeth, nibbling on it slightly, nervously.
His gaze flickered down to her lips, watching their movements causing his own body to feel strangely warm. He felt a great mixture of emotions, none on which he wanted to name just yet. His fingers slowly ran back towards her chin, using his thumb to gently bring her bottom lip out from her teeth. “Don’t bite your lip like that.” His voice came out lower than before.
Her brows furrowed together, the smallest hint of confusion on her features.
“If you bite your lip like that, all I wanna do is bite it myself..” He explained without being asked, his voice only becoming deeper as many emotions swirled in his very blood.
Her lips parted slightly with a small gasp, and she could’ve sworn her stomach did a back flip. “Then do it…”
He found his breath hitching in his throat. He wasn’t expecting her to say such a thing, but he found himself enjoying it. “You have no idea how badly I want to do just that.” His heart raced in his chest, his heart full of nervousness and excitement. He moved his fingers, caressing her cheek softly.
He leaned in slightly closer, their faces now only inches apart. They could feel each other’s breaths. “If I do, I might not want to stop there..”
She gulped, staring deeply into his eyes for a moment. And then a small nod came from her, silently telling him that she wanted the same thing as he did.
He took the slowest deep breath as she nodded, out of relief and to even calm himself. Without wasting anymore time, he brought his lips to hers. The sensation of the kiss felt like a fire running through his body, making his heart pick up pace. His mind was spinning, all rational thoughts leaving as he found himself getting lost in the taste of her.
They were both completely lost in the feel of one another, their lips moving together in a perfect rhythm. His free hand wondered her waist, wanting to get closer, wanting to feel more of her. But the moment was cut off by a quiet hiss only a few feet away, causing them to suddenly remember where they were… the library.
They quickly broke apart to find Madam Pince standing a few feet away, glaring at them in disapproval and annoyance. Her face was stern, her voice hard as she spoke. “There will be no such behaviors in the library.” She hissed, placing her hands on her hips in irritation.
If it was possible, her face heated up more, but this time in horror at being caught in such an act, an out of character act of her own.
A quiet sigh left his lips, but still found himself suppressing a smirk as he noticed the girl’s reaction. She was a deeper shade of red, and he knew she was mortified. He tried his best to not let his laughter show. “Sorry, we’ll be leaving..”
Madam Pince huffed, clearly not pleased with the pair. "Out quickly. The library isn't a place for snogging."
He just nodded, grabbing the girl’s hand and pulling her out of the library with him quickly. Once they exited, he couldn’t keep the laughter quiet, letting a few chuckles escape into the almost empty corridor.

Silver Necklace.
pairing; Regulus Black x Potter!Reader
summary; after being paired with regulus black in potions class, you manage to slowly become friends. he steals your heart and it’s only a matter of time till he breaks it.
warnings; overall just angst, bits of fluff, mentions of sex (just asking about it, no smut), making out, enemies to lovers-esque
notes; fem!reader, mean-ish(??) regulus at start, no use of y/n, kinda long fic so not proof read, ps. i know sirius is 1959 but it works out better if he’s 1960 so don’t come at me, also, i read atyd for this .. (so this is kinda influenced by that)
Every passing day, you swore your heart ached more and more. Every glance you cast over to him in the halls, passing by as if strangers when not even a couple months ago you had been laughing and confiding in each other like idiots.
He had become so lifeless in such a short amount of time. You felt as if your grasp on your once joyful life had slipped through your fingers like coarse grains of sand.
Sooner than later, you had found yourself conflicted. Battling between wanting him by your side but having your beliefs clash. Then it was revealed and all was lost. You just wish you had the strength to go on as if he didn’t exist, like you used to.
It had all started during your fifth year at Hogwarts. You normally kept to yourself, only really talking to your friends and of course the boys: James, Sirius, Remus and Peter. In all honesty, you forgot Regulus existed most of the time.
That was till you two were paired for a potions class. He was very intelligent, you must admit. But also quite snarky.
“You will each be assigned a partner and then I would like you to work together to brew a specific potion,” your Potions Master, Professor Slughorn babbled on. “You will be given a maximum time period of three weeks to complete the potion then will be graded on it.”
You sort of tuned out after that. The professor kept talking, listing out names and assigning the pairs a specific potion. Your head snapped back in his direction when he called out your name. “And . . . Regulus Black.” Your eyes met his stoic grey ones. Merlin, he looked so similar to Sirius yet so unique, you thought, holding the same dark hair and high placed cheekbones. You must admit he was very good looking.
“You all will be making a Polyjuice Potion, which you can find in page 57 of your books. The lacewing flies, I have already stewed for each of you to save time. I advise you also check your potions some evenings to make sure they’re going well. ” Walking over to a table as Regulus Black followed, you pulled out your potion making book. The boy beside you watched as you flicked through the pages, looking for the Polyjuice potion, still not uttering a word to you.
Finally, you found it. “Aha!” You mumbled as the corners of your lips quirked up slightly. After sitting in silence, you had decided to spark up conversation.
“Here’s the ingredients list. Could you get the cauldron ready while I gather the other ingredients?” Your eyes once again looked up to meet his as he muttered out a gravelly response and did as you asked.
After twenty minutes, the bell had rung commencing the end of class. You turned to Regulus to say something to him but he had already left. With a sigh, you gathered your things and headed to your next class.
You were now sitting with Lily in the Great Hall, waiting on your brother and his friends. “I’m stuck paired with Sirius’ brother for Potions. He’s barely said a word to me at all, don’t you think that’s a bit strange?” You asked the red-haired girl, while casting a gaze over the Slytherin Table. Lily had replied but her words went through your ears as you studied the black and green robes. Your eyes flickered over to Regulus Black. He sat chatting to Evan Rosier.
“There they are,” a familiar voice came, before the person owning it plunked down beside you, wrapping an arm around your shoulder. “Hi Sirius,” you gave him a tight-lipped smile. James sat across from him, beside Lily, and Remus had took a spot on the opposite side of you. “Hi Moony,” you had said when the brown haired boy ruffed your hair. “Hello to them but not to your own brother,” James frowned. You rolled your eyes playfully, “Hi James.”
The group made small talk and you (once again) tuned out. You sort of had a habit of that. Glancing around the Great Hall, your eye connected once again to your potions partner. Surprisingly, his were already set in your direction, glaring at the back of James’ head, then across to his brother. Then the grey-toned orbs clicked with your own. Hurriedly looking away, your cheeks burned at being caught staring at him. Weird, he was already watching us, you had thought. Shrugging off your thoughts, you decided to just forget about that embarrassing moment.
Trudging through the halls to potions class, you had arrived with a few minutes till class started. It was when you were gathering your things again and setting it down to the table that Regulus Black stepped over and took a place beside you. You were reminded of catching him watching your group yesterday, but quickly dismissed it.
“Hi,” you said while gathering the Polyjuice ingredients, not bothering to lift your head up to the boy. You glanced up to him with furrowed brows when you were met with no reply. He gazed down at you with a condescending look on his grey, dark eyes. “Right . . well, we should start. There’s 4 parts; we should have this done by the last class till it’s due.”
Regulus stood in front of the cauldron and you held the book in the crevice of your elbow. “It says here: Add 3 measures of fluxweed.” Grabbing the container of fluxweed, he added what was needed into the cauldron. “I don’t need you to read me out everything, I am not illiterate,” the Black brother grumbled, laced with an irritated tone. His voice was smooth and pronounced and you would’ve wished for him to speak a little more, had his words not been so unkind. It reminded you heavily of his elder brother’s; aristocratic and noble.
With a scoff, you threw the book down onto the table to the right of the boy. “Well, what do you suppose I do if you’re going to make the potion?” Regulus ignored you, not having a response to your question.
“Move.” You pushed Regulus out of the way of the cauldron, following the next step in the guide. “What do you think you’re doing?” His brows were angled down and his colourless eyes narrowed into a glare. “Well, if you won’t let me help, I’m not going to let you brew the whole thing. Who says you wont fuck it up?” “I would mess it up? God, you Potters are so obnoxious,” he spat.
“Mister Black, Miss Potter. Do we have a problem?” Slughorn asked the two of you. “No, Professor,” Regulus answered as quick as it was asked. He had reciprocated your actions, shoving you out of the way and taking control of the potion again. He grabbed your wrist in a tight, iron grip that it was almost sore. “Shut up, and do not cause another scene.” He glowered at you before finally letting go of your wrist. There was a red ring in the tracing of where he grasped your arm so roughly. You wouldn’t be surprised if it bruised.
The Marauders and you had sat in the Gryffindor common room along with one of your dorm mates, Marlene McKinnon. “Merlin, Sirius. Your brother is the biggest git I’ve ever met.” Sirius, who sat on the ground beside the fireplace, gave you a puzzled look. “Why? What’s he done?” You had explained the situation that had occurred during potions. Sirius had only replied with an ‘oh’. You rolled your eyes at the dry response but had left it at that.
Marlene spoke up from beside you on the couch. “Did you lot hear, Lucius Malfoy’s planning on joining the Death Eaters?” Her soft voice echoed through the empty common room. “He’s hardly actually going to join,” James spoke up, doubt written all over his face, “He barely left school. Only a couple years ago.”
“He was a Slytherin, them lot are the type. Horrid,” Marlene spoke again. The Death Eaters were starting to gain more members but you hadn’t thought people you knew would start joining.
Rising from your seat on the couch had caught Marlene’s attention. “Where are you going?” The bright blonde questioned you. “Just goin’ to check on Slughorn’s assignment. You want me to check yours? James, I’m borrowing the invisibility cloak.” You didn’t bother waiting for an answer before taking it.
“Yes, please. Thanks mate.” She flashed you a beaming smile and you exited your house’s common room.
It was late now and you were unsure if it was even a good idea leaving the common room at this time. The prefects were probably done their patrol by now, leaving just you and creepy old Filch wandering the halls alone. It was fine though, he wouldn’t be able to see you with the cloak on.
“Lumos,” you whispered, holding your wand out as the cloak draped over your lower arm. The tip of your vine wood wand came alight in a blue-white colour, brightening the hall for you to be able to roam freely with vision.
It wasn’t long till you navigated your way to the Potions class, carefully pushing the door ajar so that it wouldn’t let out it’s usual croaks. Upon stepping inside, your—well, James’ actually—invisibility cloak was thrown off and ditched onto the cold tiles of Slughorn’s classroom.
Stepping further into the classroom, majority of the room was dark, aside from a corner where your cauldron happened to be. An illuminating light, that appeared to be the Lumos charm, lit the crevice of the room. A dark figure stood with it’s back to you. Would it be too late to slip back on the cloak and run back to your dorm?
The answer to that was already decided when the figure spoke as it turned to your direction, “Who’s there?” It appeared to be the younger Black brother. When your eyes had met, his face quickly turned to a scowl.
“Oh, just you, Potter.” His voice seemed to be laced with venom when he had spat your surname. “What are you doing here?” You asked, cautiously stepping up to the cauldron and the angsty boy. Peering into the cauldron, your potion seemed to be doing fine. “What does it look like? Someone has to check on it, seeing as you don’t.” Regulus’ tone was harsh. You scratched the back of your head and walked over to another cauldron; Marlene and her partner’s. The boy just watched you as you checked if hers was going well.
“Sorry, I just forgot. You were the one who was so sure that you didn’t need my help anyway.” He just ignored your comment. “Listen, you can check on it on Thursday and I’ll check on it Saturday. We’ll keep watching it every two nights, taking turns. Alright with you?” He pondered for a minute over your decision before agreeing to it. “Alright.”
You walked into the great hall, venturing over to the Gryffindor table and taking a seat between Peter and James. “Morning,” you greeted, it being followed with repetition. “Big quidditch game this Friday; first of the season. You all coming to watch?” James asked to the group. “Obviously, when have I missed one,” you grinned up to him. You took pride in showing up to support him for his matches. He is your big brother, of course. “Who’re you playing?” Sirius questioned. “Ravenclaw,” James replied with a smirk.
“Pity, Sirius, that you got kicked off the team. You were probably the best beater we had, alongside Marlene,” you recalled. “I know, but I deserved it.,” Sirius groaned. A remorseful grin was evident on his face, recollecting the memory. “Of course, you deserved it after what you tried to do to Sev.” Lily had an angry frown on her face.
“Don’t know why you even hang out with that freak anyway,” Remus taunted. James joined the conversation again, “He’s pure evil.”
As Lily argued with the elder boys to defend her best friends name, you could feel eyes burning into the back of your head. You sat facing the Hufflepuff table, so the Ravenclaw and Slytherin tables were behind you. Glancing over your shoulder, you were encased in an uncomfortable sense of eye contact with Regulus Black himself. His eyes widened a little from their previous narrowed glare when yours connected but he glanced away just after.
The day had gone quickly. It was already noon, meaning it was time for Potions, seeing as it was a Wednesday. Marlene and you had headed together to class, arriving and taking your places at your own designated cauldrons. The black haired boy was already there.
“Have you started the next step?” You had asked, standing beside him and opening the textbook onto the right page again. “No, I need you to crush two lacewing flies.”
And, that’s how the rest of your potion classes with Regulus Black went. Just loitering alongside him and aimlessly following any instructions he would give you in silence. To your content, he hadn’t said anything patronising to you. But he hadn’t said anything to you, conversation wise either. That was, till the one today. You had been measuring out the bicorn horn, getting ready to crush it to a powder, when Regulus spoke up. “I’ve noticed how well Sirius and your little gang get along.”
You raised your head to look up at him with a ‘hm?’. “I’ve never saw him smile or laugh as much as he does with your lot in my entire life,” he continued. “Well, he is best friends with James,” you had piped up, slightly bemused on why he was bringing this up. He had refused to look at you, instead staring down into the brewing and bubbling potion. “Ah yes, I forgot about my replacement.” If you didn’t know any better, you would’ve thought he had a tinge of jealousy or resentment in his voice. Why would he be jealous?
“I wouldn’t call him a replacement. Sirius thinks highly of you, even if he doesn’t show it,” you had attempted to reassure him. This resulted in an irked scoff and finally, his eyes had met yours for the first time this whole class. “Thinks highly of me? That’s a proper joke. He doesn’t give a toss about me, seeing as he attempts to abandon me with our overbearing parents each Christmas and Summer. I’m sure he’s told you all about our loving mother.” His voice was edged with so much sarcasm and bitterness you could drown in it. His last words held a sardonic tone and made you feel tense. You didn’t know what to say, so you decided on not uttering a word.
It had been 2 days since your last conversation with Regulus Black. Luckily, it had been a Thursday, so you didn’t have to be in his grudgeful presence till Monday which was the last day anyway for this stupid project.
Once again, you had stolen James’ cloak, heading out after hours when all the prefects had already done their checks. It was your turn to watch over your potion. When Slughorn said that the students should look over their potions in the evenings, he probably didn’t intend to do it this late, but it was more fun like this. A twinge of excitement erupted in your chest thinking about it. You were nearly finished after weeks of begrudgingly stirring, chopping up and grinding ingredients and following orders.
Stepping soundlessly into the room, you crept over to the cauldron belonging to you and Regulus. You stirred the sludgy mixture with a tinge of disrelish, nearly gagging from how repulsive it was. You were unaware of the presence who joined you in the room mere minutes after; inching towards you, feet not making a squeak against the shadowy tiles.
After concluding that your assignment was going fine, you had turned to head back to the Gryffindor dorms. Your heart jumped and you let out a quiet, shocked gasp. A man stood behind you. Upon seeing his face, your shoulders relaxed and eyebrows twisted into a frown—although, not genuinely cross. The corners of his lips pricked up into a grin (which looked like he was attempting to conceal) before falling back to their normal, neutral position.
“Merlin, Black. Nearly gave me a heart attack there,” you lightly scolded. “Why’re you here? It’s my day to check.” He walked past you over to the cauldron, arms brushing and you felt a light rush of breeze. He was now standing to your right and you turned to face him once again as he spoke, “Couldn’t sleep. I decided to check on the potion, there isn’t much else to do in this bloody castle.”
You had replied with a mere ‘oh’. He gazed into the potion for a minute, then his eyes met yours. Embarrassingly, you scrambled to pick up your wand, then walked over to the door to grab the cloak that lay sprawled out on the floor.
“Are you in a rush?” His looming voice echoed through the room. You hesitated before replying, “No.” His next words had sprung some surprise in you, but you tried to not show it on your features; instead, aiming for a calm expression. “Would you like to go for a walk?”
After reluctantly contemplating the scenarios in your head of what he was trying to get at with this—possibly trying to attack you in a more secretive place, no one would catch him. No, that’s silly. If he wanted to attack you he would’ve already done it. Plus, he isn’t pure evil like ‘Snivellus’ Snape; and he would have no reason to ambush you—you agreed: “Alright.” His expression seemed to slightly change to a aplomb manner.
Following Regulus and sauntering through the halls together, some minutes in pure silence, some in light chatter, you both had managed to end up in the Hogwarts Astronomy Tower. The previously harsh wind settled to a leisurely breeze. Regulus had mimicked your actions, leaning against the metal railings of the tower. The whole atmosphere held a sort of serenity you felt that you’ve never experienced before; you were friends with the Marauders, of course, and nothing was ever tranquil with them boys.
Your gaze had flickered over to the boy beside you. His long, black hair was moving delicately in the zephyr. It reminded you of gentle waves moving through the ocean, but you then realised that was a silly comparison. You never really took your time to observe Regulus Black. His face was strongly chiselled—almost as if he was carved by that muggle, Michelangelo—elegant looking, really. He looked similar to Sirius, just younger and with his own distinctive characteristics.
Looking away as to not get caught staring like before, you realised you were both basking in silence for a few minutes. That was until you looked back to him and noticed Regulus’ dubious conscience to break it. Finally, he spoke. “I’m—Sorry for freaking out in potions the last day,” he blurted out in a weak whisper. “Wha-” I replied, confused for a second before speaking again—as so he didn’t feel sheepish. “. . It’s fine.”
‘Serenity.’ You could almost laugh if you were alone right now. How ironic, the thought of the once calm atmosphere being shrivelled up and thrown out like paper, replaced with this unbearably silent tension. “Sirius meant the world to me, growing up. He was like a hero, in my eyes,” Regulus’ voice was more clear now, and he let out an airy laugh in spite of himself. “Merlin, I don’t know why I’m telling you this, you don’t even want to—”
“No. It’s alright.” Your voice was firm, encouraging him to continue; and so he did. “I-We—We did everything. Now, he does it all with James. Wont even spare me a glance in the halls, during breakfast.” His voice trailed off and he went silent again.
His eyes haven’t met yours in a while and you were guessing they might’ve been glossy, and he’d have been embarrassed if they were. “Regulus. Your brother, Sirius. He loves you, so much more than you’d think. He just . . doesn’t express it well. He doesn’t know how to. It’s spiteful. He just feels different from you; always going on about how you’re the golden child and he’s the black sheep.” Black sheep of the Blacks. Ironic, yet again.
You both savoured the silence for a few minutes, settling on cherishing the midnight sky and how the starts shimmered like glitter. Regulus decided to change the topic, “Did you know, my family are all named after astrology, stars, constellations and all? Most, anyway; my ancestors must’ve been interested in sabaism.”
His appealing voice caught my attention and I turned to glance at him. “Really? Is Regulus one?” He adorned a small smile now. It was refreshing after being caught for days in his usual tempers. “Yes. My father’s called Orion. That’s a constellation. Sirius, the dog star. Orion’s dog.”
You listened attentively as he rambled on. “My cousin, Bellatrix, named after a star. Andromeda’s a constellation. I can go on further but we’d be here all night.” His silvery eyes shone in the night sky—it was majestic—and met yours, accompanied with a glowing smile on his sharp traits. You just returned the smile.
“You know, you’re quite alright, Potter.” This took you by surprise. Regulus Black (sort of) complimenting you? You’d have never thought the day would come. With a light laugh and smug but suppressed grin, you replied: “Thanks. You’re not so bad yourself, Black.” This persuaded a chuckle to slip past his pink lips. It was a deep, short laugh.
Letting a few more minutes pass up in the astronomy tower, you both had now agreed to head back to your common rooms. Now walking down the halls with the tips of your wands lighting the way, you had been making small talk with the boy.
How unexpected this whole situation was. If you had told yourself a week ago that you’d be wandering the halls past midnight with Regulus Arcturus Black, you would’ve been in disbelief.
James’ invisibility cloak was draped casually around your shoulders. The pale moonlight shone through the windows of the castle, painting streaks across Regulus and your faces’ each time passing one.
“You know,” you paused for a minute before continuing. “You’re welcome to stay with my family and I over Christmas.” You noticed the conflicted look on his face upon hearing your words, but nevertheless, kept talking. “I’m sure my parents won’t mind. James has Remus over each year, and Sirius when he can. You’d be able to spend more time with your brother.”
He let out a mockingly amused snigger. “I think my parents would go mental if they found out both their heirs have gone rebel.” You let out a small giggle with this but then your lips settled to a gentle, closed smile. Regulus seemed to mirror your actions and you had settled into a comfortable silence again.
Till, of course, that was broken once again. But this time, not by you nor Regulus. “Who’s there?” A gruff voice echoed behind you both from past the corner of the long corridor. Shit! You had completely forgotten about Filch. Giving Regulus a panicked look—to which he shot straight back—you quickly whispered: “Nox,” and extinguished the light from your wand. Regulus had done the same so now you were both lost in the dark halls of Hogwarts, only having the blue-toned moonlight as a source to see as it glimmered off your silver bracelet.
Unexpectedly, the cloak was stripped from your shoulders, leaving a slightly cold breeze in its place. “What are you—” You whisper-screamed to Regulus but you were interrupted when his dainty fingers wrapped around your face, his palm covering your mouth.
He gave you a stern look, as if to say, ‘just shut up and trust me,’ and so you did. He threw the cloak across the two of you, backing you up against the wall (nearly knocking a painting down in the process).
Under the cloak, it was darker than before and quite stuffy. You had never shared the cloak with someone else like the Marauders did, so you weren’t used to this. Your hands reached up and removed the hand splayed across your lips. Your position was also uncomfortable, being pressed up against the wall with Regulus towering over you. It seemed like all your senses were heightened.
One arm was just above your head, holding himself up and he brought the other in between you both to hold up his wand. “Lumos,” he said in a sotto voice. The light was dimmer than usual but lit up between both your faces.
Footsteps approached. Filch was drawing nearer and nearer. Your eyes connected to his and in this lighting, you had realised how small the proximity between you really was, causing a small pink to tint your cheeks. It seems as he noticed too, as the sharp corners of his cheekbones were softened by a dull rouge.
It was as if you were inspecting him under a microscope. All his features were so close to your reach; all displayed right in front of your eyes. Eyes. His had a thin lining of artic blue around his pupils which you only discovered by being this close to him. They stared right back at you and you felt the blush crawl all through the back of your neck and hung high on your cheeks. “What are you gawping at?” His tone was soft yet also appeared harsh. Guess he’s still the same Regulus. “Sorry.”
Merlin, time drove so slowly when you were waiting for it to go. You felt hot and self-conscious under Regulus’ gaze, but attempted to shrug it off. I’m sure he’s just as embarrassed of this situation as you felt. Thinking back to what you said earlier, elegant was an understatement; this boy was angelic.
After what felt like forever, Filch finally came creeping down the corridor. Your body made sure you were aware of your heightened rubatosis as Filch drew closer. Regulus and you had waited with baited breath as he passed. Your eyes followed Filch from behind Regulus but it seems his never left you. Luckily, he didn’t suspect nor notice you two at all—well, how could he when you were both under the invisibility cloak.
Once he had turned the corner, both of you had collectively let out a sigh (one you didn’t even know you were holding in). Regulus had waited a small bit longer—probably just incase Filch comes back—and then stepped away from you. The invisibility cloak fell to your feet, and you hesitantly disconnected the eye contact to pick it up. You were sure your cheeks were still rosy as you could feel the heat still burning from them.
The rest of the journey back was glazed over with a tense, suffocating silence. You didn’t know what to say after that and you doubt Regulus did either. Eventually, you had reached the changing staircases. “Goodnight,” you bid him goodbye as you treaded up the stairs to Gryffindor’s common room.
Turning your back away from him and following up the staircase, you had heard a small ‘goodnight’ come from Regulus. That night you had went to bed with ruddy cheeks and a buzzing in your stomach.
It was the day that your potion assignment was due and frankly, you were quite nervous about it. You had desperately hoped you’d get a good grade, seeing as you really had tried with this project, and the amount of time spent on it.
Marlene walked alongside you out of Transfiguration. “Godric, Professor McGonagall really has it out for me,” she complained, her brows furrowed and whiny. “What makes you think that?” Your blonde friend had nearly answered before you even questioned her, “She always gets cross when something goes wrong for me, but she just loves bloody Dirk Cresswell. Never gives out to him,” she sneered. You both made your way to the Potions classroom. “Think it’s because I’m half-blood.”
You let out a defeated sigh, “Marlene, you do realise Professor McGonagall is half-blood too . .” Her annoyed expression fell and Marlene just replied with an ‘oh’.
Slughorn was now going through the room, grading each potion. You heard a couple ‘acceptable’s, two ‘exceeds expectations,’ one ‘outstanding’ and even three ‘poor’s. Once your potion was graded, you were dismissed from the class.
You waited anxiously with Regulus standing beside you. Neither of you had said anything yet; you were far too nervous to, and still a little embarrassed from the other night. You would’ve hated to have spent 3 weeks on this just for it to turn out to be shit.
At long last, Professor Slughorn stood infront of you both, peering into the small cauldron. “Outstanding, Miss Potter and Mister Black. Well done, you’re both dismissed.”
Your lips twisted into a proud grin, but you puffed out a small flow of air, trying to keep the grin in that just grew wider. Following Slughorn’s orders, you had rushed out of the classroom and headed a little down the halls from the class.
“Wait, Potter,” you heard in that oh-so-familiar voice. Turning around, you faced Regulus Black with a wide smirk. “Yes, Black?” He swiftly caught up to you, towering over in front of you again. “I just wanted to say, good job. Wouldn’t mind working with you again, as partners.” He let a smug grin adorn his lips. “Thanks. That wouldn’t be too bad, I suppose.” You flashed him a pearly-white smile, before turning back and continuing to walk down the halls.
It had been a few weeks since you were graded in potions and much to your content, Regulus Black and you had grown closer. You would even dare call yourself friends with the boy. Your brother was a little skeptical about the friendship—as well as Sirius, and the other two Marauders too—but you assured them it was fine.
Speaking of Sirius, his birthday had passed and Lily, James, Remus, Peter and you had arranged a little ‘Sweet-Sixteen’ birthday for him. It was a fun little get together, only consisting of a few friends.
The cool breeze flowed gently through your hair. “You know, I don’t really see why you’re friends with all them horrid boys. Like seriously, Barty Crouch, Evan Rosier, even Snape. Cop on, Black.” You both sat on the course ground of the Astronomy Tower. He let out a breathy laugh, “You think I’m friends with Snape? Not even people in my house like Snape. His only friends are Mulciber and Lily Evans.”
He continued to talk, defending his friends, “and, who do you suppose I be friends with? Xenophilius Lovegood? He’s an odd one.” You let out a strong laugh, tossing your head back before looking to Regulus. Regulus smiled back at you as you laughed. “Poor guy, he’s quite nice actually,” you backed up the Ravenclaw boy.
“Yes! Come on, James!” You screamed, throwing your arms up in celebration as your older brother threw the quaffle into a hoop, marking his third goal for Gryffindor. You didn’t mind all the judging looks you earned.
Gryffindor was currently in the lead against Slytherin thanks to James. The commentators voice boomed through the air as each player whizzed past, doing their part for the team.
“And another ten points for Gryffindor!” The crowed around you roared, cheering proudly for their team. “If we keep this up,” Lily said, “we’ll be in the final in no time.” You just nodded to her, eyes still following the quaffle being passed around.
Twenty minutes passed, Slytherin had scored two goals and Gryffindor, one. “What’s that?” The commentator asked rhetorically, “Regulus Black, Slytherin’s seeker has just secured their win, catching the Golden Snitch!” Once again, the Gryffindor crowd went wild, everyone being shocked seeing as how well we had this in our grasp.
Although you were from Gryffindor, you were still just as happy for Regulus being able to win the match. You would’ve even cheered for him—like you do when he’s not playing your team—but you probably would’ve gotten disowned from your own house.
‘James isn’t going to be happy with this,’ you thought. You made your way down and back to the castle, waiting for James and the rest of the boys in the Gryffindor common room.
After waiting for fifteen minutes, they all trudged in, tired and grumpy. You walked over to your brother. “Well done, James! You played so well, tough luck though,” you smiled to him, hoping he wasn’t in too much of a mood. “Thanks,” he ruffled your hair with his sweaty palm, grumbling the reply. “Merlin, you’re so sweaty. Get off me!” You playfully shoved him away, earning a grin from him.
You headed out from the common room and made your way through the halls. Eventually, you reached the Slytherin common room. Leaning against the wall beside the door, you were waiting for someone to head in or come out so you could ask for Regulus.
It took a couple minutes before you spotted Evan Rosier coming your way. “Rosier! Perfect,” you exclaimed as he walked up to the door. “What are you doing here?” His voice was cold but it didn’t seem intentional, instead genuinely asking why. “Would you do me a favor and get Regulus, please?”
He waited for a minute and contemplated his options. “He’s probably fairly busy with his win. But if I do?” You rolled your eyes. Merlin, are all Slytherins so greedy? “Really?” You puffed out a sigh, “I’ll . . do your Ancient Runes homework.” “Deal,” he replied with a grin, “Thanks Potter.”
The blonde headed into the common room and later returned with the dark headed boy a couple minutes after. Regulus wandered out past the door and you stepped up to greet him, Rosier heading back into the room.
“Reg!” You smiled to him, gaining one back. “Well done. I can’t believe you managed that, we were going so well.” You folded your arms across your chest and stood in front of him. “What can I say? Being a great seeker just runs in my blood.” That bit was quite true; his cousin, Narcissa Black was Slytherin’s best seeker, your generation would say so anyway.
“Oh, shut up, you snob,” you giggled. He just held a content smile on his face. “Also . . I have a proposal,” you started. His eyebrow quirked up suspiciously at this, “I’m not sure I should be scared or not.” You flashed a beaming smile again. “No, no. It’s not anything bad,” you reassured him.
He listened contently as your proposed your idea, “I was wondering . . if you’d be able to convince your parents to let you stay at Hogwarts during Christmas break? We could hang out more and you wouldn’t have to put up with them. ” You bit your lip anxiously as you waited to hear what he had to say. His expression didn’t reveal his reactions at all. It was nerve wracking.
He scratched the back of his head, furrowing his brows a little with an unsure smile, “Uh, I’m not sure if they’d let me.” Your face must’ve fell because his eyes widened a little and he quickly spoke again. “Not that I don’t want to—of course. I’ll still ask,” he smiled at you, trying to reassure you he wanted to stay too. “I’ll tell them there’s going to be extra quidditch practices and I need to stay.”
You smiled at him gratefully. “Thanks, Reg. You don’t have to if you don’t want to, you know.”“No, I do,” he quickly shot back. “No promises though.” You just chuckled, “Alright.”
And so, you spent Christmas break at Hogwarts with Regulus Black, instead of returning home with James, Remus and Sirius.
This was your first time spending Christmas at Hogwarts; there was barely anyone there. You noticed how empty the halls were compared to normal. It was nice though, calming.
The dull winter light shone through the windows of your dorm. It was extremely quiet. You didn’t think you’d miss how loud the girls would be in the mornings till you woke up alone in your dorm room.
It wasn’t long till you were dressed in your own clothes, happy that you had an occasion for not wearing your robes, and ready to head to the Great Halls. Upon arriving, you had realised that you were one of three students in Gryffindor who stayed at Hogwarts (or atleast, was awake and getting breakfast at the Hall).
You sat down at your house table and placed a slice of toast on your plate. The bench creaked as someone sat beside you. Looking up while taking a bite from your toast, you smiled, seeing Regulus sit beside you. “Morning, Reg.”
He greeted you back, grabbing some food for himself and placing it onto his plate. “This is the Gryffindor table. If one of your Slytherins saw you here, they’d never let this go,” you teased. He just shoved you playfully before stuffing a slice of toast in his mouth. “Not very prim and proper for a Black.” You let out a small giggle as he gave you a sidelong glance.
After making light chat to your Slytherin friend, it was a couple hours later now and you had been granted permission to head to Hogsmeade.
The ground was littered with light snow and it looked like a pristine, white blanket from a bird’s eye view. Your arms were wrapped around Regulus’ waist and your head lay gently on his back shoulder, peering down at the ground as you giggled and marvelled at everything. Regulus wasn’t talking much but, neither were you, instead being too busy gazing at the forests and rivers down below.
You landed down just a few metres away from Hogsmeade, Regulus letting you off the broomstick first before getting off himself. “That was fun,” you smiled. You weren’t used to riding your broomstick much, seeing as you don’t play quidditch so you didn’t have much use of it. “Yeah.”
The snow was crunchy under your boots as you both strolled into the High Street of Hogsmeade. “I need to get some things,” you told the boy, “I’ll catch you later. I’ll meet you at the Three Broomsticks.” He just nodded, carrying his broom by his side. “Alright. Half an hour sound good?”
Regulus went on his way as you trotted down to Honeydukes. You weren’t sure what to get everyone as gifts so you decided upon this. You already bought James a new quidditch set as the one at home was all battered and bruised up. You had bought Sirius some new cologne he had been talking about—that you assumed he only wanted because Remus had complimented it a while back—and you had got Remus a few books about magical creatures. Peter would like a box of chocolate frogs from Honeydukes, seeing as they were his favourite.
You had also got things for Lily, Marlene and the other girls. But you just couldn’t decide what to get Regulus. You decided to leave it and that you’d figure something out.
Honeydukes was a cosy little shop located in the centre of Hogsmeade. You entered the shop, alerting the shopkeeper with a small ring from the bell. Rows and rows of sweets were piled up all the way to the ceiling on teal-turquoise shelves. This really was a sweet tooth’s heaven.
“Ah, Miss Potter, how can I assist you?” The shopkeeper greeted. “Hello!” You sent him a charming smile, “Could I get a box of chocolate frogs, please.” The shopkeeper was lovely, helping you and even wrapping it up for you in a delicate, silver wrapping paper. You thanked him on your way out.
Now, time to find Regulus something. You wandered through Hogsmeade till you approached a shop supplied with quidditch items. Peering through the window, the newly released, Nimbus 1009 laying gleaming in its spot. A new broom, of course! You knew that being a Black meant he could probably afford as many of these as he’d like, but it’s the thought that counts.
It had now been half an hour since you last saw Regulus and you sat alone at a wooden table by the fireplace, sipping away at your butterbeer. A small bell jingled as people entered and your head raised, waiting for Regulus to come. You’d already bought a butterbeer for him, and it sat longingly across from you on the table.
Once again, the bell had rung. In entered your friend, taking a seat across from you. “Finally,” you huffed, “took you long enough. We said half an hour.” He rolled his eyes and grinned, taking a swing from the drink in front of him. A small cream moustache lay across the top of his lips till he licked them, then spoke, “Oh shush. I’m only five minutes past, thanks for this.” He gestured to the butterbeer, drinking some more.
After finishing your beverages, you and Regulus had headed back to Hogwarts. Regulus had flown you both back on his broomstick once again and you were back in no time; flying was much quicker than taking the path over to Hogwarts.
You woke up, rubbing your eyes and yawning—still slightly tired. Then you shot up from your bed. It’s Christmas! You hurriedly ran to get changed and rushed down to the great hall.
Regulus was already seated at the Slytherin table. Once he spotted you, a friendly smile broke out alone his features. You were quick to fire one back, darting over to where he sat. You plunked down across from the boy.
“Merry Christmas, Reg!” You cheered, feeling giggly and excited. “Happy Christmas,” he smirked back. He looked far more posh today than normal. His jet-black hair was swept back with more gel and he held a more presentable, Black family look today—if that makes sense.
You both shared light conversation over breakfast, agreeing to share presents tonight at the astronomy tower. You both had received letters and gifts from family, opening them together at the dining table. The whole day was spent with Regulus, but you didn’t mind, you enjoyed his company. ‘It’s so strange how I once thought he was an absolute prick—not even too long ago as well,’ you thought to yourself.
It was now half-past eight and Regulus was waiting for you on the astronomy tower, leaning on the rails holding a small box in his hands. You reached the top of the tower, finding Regulus standing which his back to you.
You walked up to him, the broom clasped behind your back—trying to conceal it, but that’s a bit hard seeing as it’s a whole broomstick. “Reguluss,” you purred, catching the attention of the boy. He turned around with a grin and you could say you were equally as excited as him. He also held something behind his back with one hand, not letting you see it.
“Open yours first,” you smiled, handing over the present to him. It was quite obvious what you got him. You weren’t the best gift wrapper. “I wonder what it is,” he sardonically chuckled, unwrapping it and seeing that it was the newly released broom.
His eyes met yours and his smile stretched up to the bottom of his cheeks. “Thank you, shit, I didn’t expect this one. This is brand new, Merlin’s beard, not even my parents would buy me something like this.” You smiled at him and he placed the broom to the ground before scurrying forwards, coming towards you.
You weren’t sure what he was doing till his arms wrapped around your waist and he spun you around. You gripped his shoulders, looking into his eyes. “Regulus! Put me down,” you giggled loudly.
After spinning you lightly, he placed you down, keeping one hand still on your waist—which made your cheeks heat up, but it wasn’t noticeable in the dim lighting—but bringing the other between you. On his palm, a small, forest green box. “For you, m’lady.” He held a small grin on his face, and you just let out an airy laugh at him. “Thank you, good sir,” you replied, picking up the box.
Unwrapping the thin golden ribbon around it, inside the box revealed a silver necklace, a charm on it that read your name. “Regulus . .” you marvelled at it, taking it out from the box. “It’s gorgeous.”
He smiled gently at you, taking it from your grasp and walking around you. You eyed him as he passed, feeling his presence right behind you. “Can you move your hair?” He asked, and you pulled it together and held it to the side as he wrapped the necklace around your neck with delicate hands.
“Thank you,” you murmured, a faint blush on your cheeks upon feeling his hand brush the rear of your neck. The stroke of his fingers sent goosebumps tingling down your spine. A strange eruption of tickles could be felt in your stomach, like butterflies.
He stood behind you for a moment before you turned around to face him, showing the necklace sitting high upon your collarbones. Your cheeks were still pink, you knew as you could feel the slight burn of them.
The distance between you both was thin, you could faintly feel his breaths. His icey, storm grey eyes peered down at you, flickering along the plains of your face. You felt small under his brooding stare.
He looked like he was conflicted, eyes switching from your eyes to down your face. You matched his actions unconsciously.
Before you knew it, Regulus leaned in, closing the gap between the both of you. Subconsciously, you closed your eyes and mirrored his actions. You felt his lips graze yours lightly, not fully touching. Oh, them lips. How soft and plump they felt.
And then, he pressed them against yours. It felt magical (which is ironic, considering you were living in the Wizarding World). Your lips moved in sync. Regulus’ other hand moved to hold the opposite side of your waist, pulling you a little closer to him.
Your hands flew up to place themselves on top of his chest. After a few more kisses, you pushed away, gasping for air but trying not to show it. “Reg—” You started but was quickly cut off by him. “Don’t say anything. I’m sorry,” your eyebrows furrowed at the boy but he wasn’t looking, instead looking down at his shoes.
“I shouldn’t done that.” One hand was brought up to his mouth and he slid his fingers across his lips, wiping them off. “Wha—What?” You asked. “No, it’s alright,” you assured him. “I . . . I liked it.” Your fingers fidgeted behind your back and as soon as his stormy eyes, whipped up to meet yours, you sent him a small, closed smile.
It was only now that you had finally realised how you felt about the boy. The way your heart fluttered every time he smiled at you. The delicious ache in your chest you got every time you laughed with him or he laughed because of you. You’d fallen for Regulus Black—and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
The proximity between you two had decreased as you stepped closer to him, wrapping your arms around his shoulders, fingers settling to play with the baby hairs at the nape of his neck. You placed a gentle kiss on his lips once again; then one on each side of the corner of his lips. They twisted into a grin. But not a mischievous one, this time, an endearing one that made your stomach flutter.
Everything going on at this moment made your stomach flutter. “Would you . . . want to be my girlfriend?” Hesitation was evident in his voice. You could almost giggle at how cute you thought he was when he was shy. “Of course, Regulus.” You both shared a smile and the corner of his eyes crinkled.
This time, you leaned forward, initiating the kiss. Your mouths slotted together and his hands slid further across your waist till you were completely in his arms. It was obvious, feeling him grin against you with your lips pressed together and next thing you knew, you were being spun around, causing you to erupt into a fit of giggles.
It was now coming towards the end of June. Christmas break was now long past and you and Regulus had been going out for almost six months. You didn’t bother keeping it a secret, and Regulus’ pals didn’t mind so much—only considering you were pure-blooded. Not keeping it hidden doesn’t mean you went prancing around letting everyone know. Also, it doesn’t mean you wanted Sirius to find out on his own . .
You were sitting in the Gryffindor common room one night. The girls had already gone off to bed but you decided to stay up a little bit longer with your brother and his friends.
Of course, Peter had already gone to bed as well as Remus leaving shortly after. They were so preoccupied with their exams and having good sleep for them. But, they were doing their O.W.L.s, so you understand why they were so stressed and pressured to do well. Sirius never bothered with exams, so he didn’t mind staying up. Naturally, he dragged James along with him to stay in the common room.
You lay, sprawled across the couch, legs sitting on top of Sirius’ and James stood by the fireplace. You were getting tired. Your eyelids struggling to keep themselves open in the cosy heat the fire provided.
That was till Sirius blurted out: “Are you shagging my brother?” As if it meant nothing. James’ head whipped over to look at Sirius as fast as yours did. Eyes blown wide and mouth gone dry all of a sudden, you stumbled over a response. “I—What.” Your cheeks were scarlet red and burning with embarrassment.
“You heard what I said,” Sirius shrugged nonchalantly. “Sirius! No, I’m not.” James hadn’t said a word, still staring at Sirius with a gaping expression. “Are you snogging Regulus?” He continued to pry with these personal questions.
You moved your legs off him, sitting up on the sofa and wrapping your arms around your knees, burying your head into your the crevice between them both. “Uhm . . . yeah,” you managed to squeak out.
Unfortunately, Sirius didn’t quite catch that, asking you to repeat yourself. “Yeah. Merlin’s beard, I was gonna tell you.” You ran your hands down your face with a discontent huff. “I’m not mad.” Sirius let out an amused laugh.
You peaked one eye past two fingers, looking at the dark haired boy. He held an entertained grin. Lowering your hands, you looked over to James who happened to have the exact same smirk plastered on his face. “Can’t believe you’ve snogged someone before our Moony,” James sniggered. “Oh, shut it.” Even though there was a slight harsh tone to your words, you sent the two boys a smirk.
“How fascinating!” You beamed at your boyfriend, lying on a slightly-damp, patch of grass as he flew not too high above you, using the broom you had gotten him. “Your birthday also happens to be our 6 month anniversary. That’s half a year!” It was two days before Regulus’ birthday.
He replied with a small chuckle. “Pity, I wont be able to see you for either,” you frowned slightly. Regulus returned to the ground, taking a seat beside you and relaxing back. “I know,” said Regulus, “but there’s nothing we can do.” You sighed, “Yeah, I guess so.”
Regulus’ birthday arrived. You hid a small, navy blue box under your bed so the other girls wouldn’t pry and nosy about. Finally, you were able to give him his present which excited you, hoping he’d like it as much as you anticipated.
And now it was time. You both decided to meet at your usual spot, the Astronomy Tower. You arrived first, waiting not too long for Regulus to show. You scurried over to him, meeting in the middle.
“Happy birthday, Reg!” You greeted him (for the tenth time today). You smiled brightly, the outer area of your eyes crinkling gently. “Thank you, doll.” The nickname made your stomach flutter delectably.
The box in your hands was brought out in front of you for him to see. He smiled to you, taking it from your hands and placing a tender kiss to your lips. “What’s this?” He asked, in which you replied: “Open it.”
He carefully took apart the bow you had done in it, lifting the lid off the box. Inside, a jar of green, shimmery powder was placed. Regulus reached his pale hands into the box, plucking the jar from it. “Floo powder,” grinned Regulus. You weren’t sure what to make of his reaction.
“It’s so—so you can see me during summer. And get away from your family, and do what you want with it, of course.” You stumbled over your words nervously and the black-haired boy placed a peck on your temple. “I know,” he said languidly, “thanks, sweets.” Another pet name he used frequently.
His dainty fingers lifted your chin up, pulling you into him and smirking against your lips. He kissed you gently, backed off after one kiss, then leaned in again, trying to get as close to you as possible. His arms wrapped around your waist, yours pulling at his hair gingerly.
You were both practically devouring each other, not even bothering to separate for air. You accidentally tugged hard, eliciting a guttural groan from Regulus. “‘m sorry,” you mumbled, lips still grazing his. He pushed further into your face, connecting them once again.
Finally, he pulled away again. Your noses were still abrading against each other and lips softly touching as well. “I have something for you,” he whispered against your mouth, breath coming out in small puffs.
You pulled away fully now, holding onto his shoulders. He brought out his wand with one hand, muttering an ‘accio’ but you didn’t hear what he was summoning.
A petite bouquet of blood red roses and pristine white baby breath came to his clutch and he handed them over to you. “It’s . . ehm, red because your Gryffindor, and the leaves—I guess, are green. Like Slytherin.” He chuckled nervously, hand immediately going to scratch the rear of his head once you took the flowers from his grip.
Before smiling at him, you took a whiff of the flowers. They smelled gorgeous and light. “Thank you, Reg.” You leaned onto your tippy toes and gave him a peck on each cheek, then a prolonged kiss to his lips.
Summer days drifted away with the wind. It had already been two weeks into your holidays. Regulus has visited you once so far, you both going on a walk through a muggle park. He sends letters regularly. They always came sealed with a family crest stamp, and written in elegant handwriting with obsidian-coloured ink.
You wrote back as well, sealing the end of each letter with a lipstick mark (partly because you wanted to be romantic, partly because you thought it looked nice). He promised to visit you soon, and soon would be today.
The both of you were now in your bedroom. Regulus was laying down on your bed, and you were atop of him. Your mouths fit like jigsaws and your tongues danced gracefully. Silent moans slipped from each others lips every once in a while. It was bliss, you thought. His hands were placed on your waist, sliding up and down it gently, causing your shirt to ride up slightly in unison.
Three booming knocks came to your door and you heard James scream your name from outside the oak wood. Your eyes shot open and you scrambled off your boyfriend. “Shit.” An alarmed expression lay on his sharp features and you wish you had time to laugh at him. He hurried over to your wardrobe, trying to shove himself into the cramped space. You stifled a giggle at him and shut the door for him.
“What?” You rolled your eyes at James standing at your door, giving him a harsh glare. “Where. Is. My. Invisibility. Cloak?” He interrogated—or more so, demanded. You pushed your palm to greet your forehead, sighing heavily. With an irritated tone, you replied, “I don’t know, James. You used it last, idiot.”
He groaned, storming back over to your door. “Fine. But if you use it without asking, I—you’ll pay,” grumbled James. “You only use it to sneak out to go drinking every once in a while. Don’t blame me again, or I might just snitch on you,” you sneered. James just sent you a look, slamming the door on the way out.
“Merlin, what a cunt.” Your mood was instantly switched when you looked over to the wardrobe. “Regulus, you can come out.” Muffled words were coming from the wardrobe and you burst out laughing upon realising he was trapped in. You let him out, of course, but only after a couple laughs.
That was the peak. After that event, all went down hill. A week following Regulus’ visit, Sirius had burst into your home, looking wrecked and in disarray. He explained to James that he ran away from home. They were pressuring him to follow a path he didn’t want to walk along. Your family (including yourself aswell,) welcomed him in with open arms.
Regulus’ letters slowed and they held a sort of edge to them that you couldn’t explain. He also hadn’t used the floo powder you gifted him to visit you. You speculated his parents might’ve found it and confiscated it, but there was no evidence for that.
But when you returned to school for your sixth year, nothing felt the same. And nothing would feel the same again. The war had caused a split between people. Most older Slytherins had joined the Dark Lord, bearing a mark on their arm to show their loyalties.
The first time you saw Regulus was at King’s Cross. You boarded the train with your brother, Remus, Sirius and Peter. Watching all the new first years bid farewell to their parents, your eyes scanned across the crowds of people.
Eventually, they landed on Regulus and the Blacks walking over to the train. He bared a stoic look with his parents. His face looking paler and sharper than ever. They didn’t say much to each other upon his departure.
Once you arrived at Hogwarts, you were too busy unpacking and greeting the girls to find Regulus yet. It wasn’t long till you were able to, sharing potions class again this year. The time whizzed by, and now you stood outside the classroom, waiting for your boyfriend to exit as well.
You noticed him walk out the doors. He immediately tensed when he noticed you standing there. “Regulus.” You tried to send him a comforting smile, but it was so hard these days with everything going on around you. “Hello, doll.” The name still made your chest squeeze and brought a push of confidence in you.
You were shocked to find out how cold he seemed this year. You hadn’t expected the drastic change in his behaviour, even towards you. But you attempted to ignore it, and the slight pit you felt in your stomach upon noticing it.
Over the months, your relationship with Regulus morphed into . . . a routine. Something that consisted of arguing, making up, then saying goodbye to each other without any other conversation. Your chats weren’t filled with laughter and smiles like they used to, instead replaced with this. He did seem to be trying to return to the old Regulus you had known, just struggling.
Your last straw was one unfortunate, February night. “I’m so sick of this! Regulus. Look at me!” You were screaming out at him on top of the Astronomy Tower, your usual hangout spot.
His grey eyes met yours, furrowed angrily and slightly glazed over. Rivers of tears were already running from yours and the skin around them was red and puffed up. “You’ve changed. And I want to help you, but you’re not letting me.” The distance between you both was slim.
You rubbed your eyes, your mind attempting to tear your hands off to prevent making them even more red and sore. At your disbelief, he took a step forward, wrapping his arms around your waist. Your arms crept around his shoulders, head buried in the crook of his neck and soaking his shirt with tears. This felt faintly familiar.
“I’m sorry, doll,” he whispered in your ear. Not moving from that position, you both stood their, relishing in each other’s presence. Aside from every other argument that happened this year, this one felt different. You felt like he might actually be coming back to you. “I love you, Regulus. But I need you to return to me,” you sniffled through weak sobs. “I love you too.”
In that moment, you felt happy. This was your Regulus. The one you had grown so fond over.
But happiness can only last for so long, right?
He pushed you back slightly, looking into your eyes. Under the dim moonlight, two small remnants of streams from his tears lay down his cheeks. His hand clutched your cheek, rubbing a soft circle with his thumb. “I—I have something to show you.”
All of a sudden, guilt and shame took over his features. He pulled his arm away from your face, using it to uncover his sleeve on the opposite arm. His skin. His pale, soft, smooth, oh lovely skin, was flawed and a Dark Mark was engraved in it. A skull and a snake in black markings.
A choked out sob forced itself from the depths of your throat. A pit formed in your stomach and you shoved him back, away from you. “I—” He started, but you shouted over him. “Don’t. No. I will . . I will not stand to be with a Death Eater.”
He called your name, pleading. The only colour on his face was the burning red of his puffy eyes. “Please . . I didn’t—”
“I’m sorry Regulus.” You were sobbing now, trying to control your shuddering words. “I won’t do it. I never thought you had it in you.” Your words were laced with venom. Each one you spat felt as if you dug a knife further into the pit in your stomach. “Please! You don’t understand,” he strained. “I ha—”
“We’re done.” He didn’t say anything else. Instead, he just stared into your eyes longingly.
That was a month ago. Now, your entire relationship with Regulus, the walls he held up that you took time breaking down, were now rebuilt and more durable than ever. Whenever you saw him in potions class, or in the halls, or even during meals, most time he’d be staring at you with guilt-filled eyes.
You felt aches each time you noticed his glances, but not the aches you used to love; this time they were sore, painful, heart-aches. But you tried to push through them.
Of course, you still loved him. It was hard trying not to. But you managed to slowly distance yourself from your feelings and continue the mundane routine of being a Hogwarts student.
Your brother, Sirius, Remus, and surprisingly, even Peter had all felt the change in your attitude. Not only had Regulus turned into a hollow shell of himself, but your split had also morphed you into a duller, less joyful version of yourself. It wasn’t shocking, that that would happen. Regulus was everything to you. He was what made you enjoy your classes so much, enjoy going doing to Hogsmeade, enjoy sneaking out past curfew. Now all them memories were just . . memories. Memories that you needed to forget.
Eventually, you had managed to overcome this downfall in your life. Stepping over it and being able to return to your old self. Not constantly thinking of the boy. Happy, old you, who hadn’t a notion Regulus even existed; only knowing him as ‘Sirius’ cold, younger brother.’ But oh, how much your heart used to ache everytime Sirius entered the common room with a playful grin on his face. He reminded you so much of when Regulus used to smile at you with twinkling eyes.
The wind was chilled, blowing softly through strands of your hair. You were sitting by the edge of the astronomy tower, leaning on the rail that stood strong in front of you. The floor you sat on was frozen cold under your fingertips.
Often times, you came up here and just sat on the ledge of the rails. You liked to watch the stars when you couldn’t sleep. It calmed you, seeing as there was a war going on around you, as well as just calming any anxieties you had.
To your luck, each time you came up here, you never stumbled across a certain boy you were wanting to avoid. Speaking of . . Regulus, you had noticed he tended to disappear recently. The Slytherins were always acting mysterious, going off places, missing classes. You had a suspicion on what they were doing but, you can’t just accuse people of that.
You sighed, it was getting late and you were already too deep into your thoughts. You really should be focusing more of your time on studying for the end-of-year exams, not wasting it up here, drowning in your thoughts.
Rising from your spot, your hands were gritty from sitting on the stone. You wiped them off on your clothes before turning around and walking over to the stairs. At the top of the stairs stood a figure. Regulus stood two steps ahead of you.
His eyes were red and he made no attempt to hide it. It was silent for a moment. He then broke the silence by calling out your name. “Regulus,” you replied, voice cracking slightly. Fuck. You really did think you were over him, but now here he was in front of you again and you were already about to keel and cry.
“What do you want?” Your voice was harsh, full of bite. It was a pitiful attempt to push back your tears and replace them with anger. But you weren’t crying yet; you were merely teary-eyed.
“I’m so sorry, my love. I know you don’t want to talk to me, and I only did what you wanted. But we must now.” Your eyebrows furrowed in both confusion and resentment towards the boy. ‘What is he talking about?’ You thought. You stayed silent, letting him continue, to which he took the hint. “I—I needed to see you one last time.” One last time? He was starting to worry you. Your expression turned from one of bitterness to one full of anxiety. “Reg, what are you talking about?” Your voice was strained.
He stepped towards you, taking your shoulders between both hands. Instead of being warm and comforting like you last remembered, they were now as cold as tiles. “You need to listen to me,” you nodded your head as he spoke, “I’ve defected the Dark Lord.”
“What?” You felt as if you were out of breath, panting as he towered over you. “I never wanted to join them. My parents, they pressured me into doing it—becoming a Death Eater. That’s why Sirius ran. That’s why he ran. But I’m not strong, like him. I couldn’t abandon them, so I joined. But it’s gone too far. He’s attacking hundreds of families. It’s not right.” His eyes were gloomy and seemed a darker, thundery grey in this lighting. “Regulus-”
He cut you off, “No. No, just listen. The Order would never trust me, so I’ve found a way to help. They wont know but I have to do something.” This time, you cut him off, holding onto his forearms, “I don’t—what are you saying, Regulus.” Merlin, the tears were flowing down your face already.
He sighed sorrowfully. “I’m leaving tomorrow. Voldemort—he,” he looked away from you. “Look, I found out about a scheme he has. I intend to end it. Attempting this will cost me my life, doll. I’m so sorry, for everything I’ve done. I just need to have you one last time.”
You looked deep into his eyes, his into yours. Long floods of tears streamed from your eyes but you didn’t do anything to stop them now. Regulus leaned in and kissed you. You let him, kissing back equally as harsh.
He pulled away, tears falling from his gorgeous grey eyes. “I love you, I always have and I always will.” “I love you too,” you weakly replied. Your foreheads connected, noses touching and lips curling into each other. You kissed him once again. Passionate and desirable; as if you would never see him again, but that seemed to be the truth.
That night when Regulus left, you fell to your knees, creating small cuts in your smooth skin, breaking blood. It was the last time you saw Regulus black.
After that treacherous night, Regulus went missing from school. Whispers around school started. People spreading around that he was ‘murdered by Voldemort’ or ‘killed by one of the Death Eaters for cowardly betraying them’. You constantly had searched for them stormy blue-grey eyes in the corridors, looking desperately for them on the Slytherin table, laughing with Evan Rosier, but to no avail. He was gone—presumed dead, the Order had said—and the pit in your stomach since that night remained as you packed your belongings, ready to return home for summer break. Fiddling with the last thing you had to remember him by, the dainty silver necklace he gave you on the day you two got together.

The last memory of a Flower
Whumptober 2023
Day 3 : “Like crying out in an empty room, with no one except the moon” | Journal | Solitary Confinement
Warning : Mentionned Character Death
Paring : Marlene McKinnon x female reader
Words : 1380+

“Harry, I found something!”
Hermione's voice calls the two boys to order. They abandon their exploration to come take a look at Hermione's find.
“What is this? A diary?” Ron asks, looking at the object.
It is in fact a small diary bound in brown leather. The cover is damaged and the pages are yellowed and curled, as if it had been lying in water for a long time.
Hermione dusts off the cover to read the name engraved on the leather.
“Y/N L/N’s diary.”
Harry frowns, sure he's heard the name before. Then as if enlightened, he grabs the photo frame from the shelf. The image comes to life, revealing a happy group of friends, albeit a little chaotic.
Harry points at a smiling young woman. Her head buried in the neck of a blonde teenager who holds her by the shoulders. They hug each other under the teasing gaze of Sirius Black.
“It’s her, right?”
Hermione leans over to read the names written under the photo: James Potter, Lily Evans, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettegrew, Dorcas Meadows, Mary McDonald, Y/N L/N and Marlene McKinon.
The writing on the frame indicates that the photo was taken during their sixth year. By elimination: the red-haired girl is Lily; the brunette with curly hair is Mary; and the dark-skinned one is Dorcas. Harry remembers Sirius briefly introducing them to him in an Order of the Phoenix photo during his fifth year.
“And the blonde girl is Marlene McKinon,” Harry concluded out loud.
Hermione smiles as the two teenagers laugh harder in the animated photo. “They seemed close...”
None of them are unaware that in this photo only two people survived.
Hermione turns the object in her hands uncomfortably. “Are you sure you want to read it...? This is the diary of one of the former members of the Order of the Phoenix. I don't think she has much to hide.”
Harry is about to point out that the diary was in Sirius's things, when Ron calls out to them.
“I found something else.”
He shows them a small wooden box, stored in the same drawer as the newspaper. He gently lifts the lid to reveal its contents: cut-out newspaper articles. Harry leans down to grab one.
Dorcas Meadows, murdered!
December 1981
It doesn't take more than a glance to realize that all of the articles recount the deaths of members of the Order of the Phoenix. A sad memorial to those who fought against Voldemort in the first war.
Below is the article discussing the death of Marlene McKinon. Murdered by Death Eaters with her entire family during July 1981.
The atmosphere is heavy but no one says a word to break it. Instead, Ron grabs another item. This one bears the name of the owner of the diary. He pushes the paper to the center of the table and everyone leans forward to read better.
The auror Y/N L/N, missing!
August 1981, a month after the disappearance of her close friend: Marlene McKinon. The young auror, just around twenty years old, set out on a quest for revenge. Witnesses claim to have seen her for the last time near Malfoy Manor at dawn on August 3. Patrols were launched but no trace of the young woman. It seems that the last heiress of the L/N’s is gone for good.
“August 1981…” Harry thinks out loud. “Hermione, when was the last page of the diary?”
The teenager grabs the notebook and opens it delicately. She turns the yellowed pages, taking care not to linger on the writings. Arriving at the last page, a hiccup of astonishment catches in her throat.
“Hermione?” Ron asks in a worried tone.
“August 4, 1981… The last page was written one day after her disappearance!”
All scruples gone, Harry and Ron in turn look at the diary to try to decipher the writing. There may not be any interesting information to be gleaned from this diary, but curiosity pricks them like a goad.
The writing is shaky. The black ink has smeared in certain places on the page. Lighter stains on the paper indicate the presence of tears, dried over time. The two pages are not completely filled out. The second is only a quarter of the way written. As if hypnotized, everyone begins reading.
August 4, 1981 (Malfoy Manor)
This is the last page of this diary that I will fill out. I wish I could have finished the next 100, but fate has not been kind to me.
If anyone ever reads this one day, allow me to introduce myself:
My name is Y/N, but Marlene calls me “Flower” because I remind her of the beauty of spring (according to her). I'm 23 years old, I have a group of friends and a diploma in my pocket. But in a few hours, that won't matter anymore.
They killed Marlene. Those damn Death Eaters took her away from me. My best friend, my confidante, the woman of my life. They took her from me last month.
And I've been in terrible pain ever since.
No matter how I turn the problem around, there is no future for me. Marlene was my horizon; a shoulder I could cry on; a marvel that I never stopped admiring; the person who introduced me to what “falling in love” meant.
We promised to stay together no matter what. After the war, we decided that we would fight so that people like us could get married. Then we would have a family together.
She wanted at least two children so that they would never be bored. If possible a girl and a boy. She had grown up with big brothers, she wanted our children to have the same life.
So I drew them. The day I learned she had died, I picked up a pencil and started drawing.
I drew her, the way I imagined her in ten years. I drew myself the same way. Then I painted a portrait of our children. I redrew them a good twenty times so that they corresponded to the image I had of them in my dreams.
When I was finished, I allowed myself to cry. I cried for a whole night. I cried for all the times I forbade myself.
And in the morning I had made my decision.
They say that to cast an unforgivable curse you have to want it from the bottom of your heart. And I wanted it in every cell of my body.
I have killed dozens of Death Eaters and not once have I felt regret.
There may have been teenagers in the group; Some who had only followed the crowd. But I didn't care anymore. I was returning the violence of the emotions that I had suffered the previous month.
I'm not proud of it but I'm not sorry either.
I wanted them to suffer like I suffered. I wished them death. I walked over their corpses. I didn't like it but I was too angry to realize it.
I continued until one of them stopped me. They locked me here, in the basement of the Malfoy Manor. I've been alone for an hour. Everyone who comes down here never sees the light of day again. I write by the light of the Moon. Tomorrow it will be my turn.
Narcissa promised to give this diary to Sirius. She gave me the pen with which I write. I think she feels sorry for me.
But I don't feel sorry for myself.
I regret nothing.
I did it for Marlene. I did it for what they took from me. I did it so that they would know the pain of losing a loved one in turn.
I haven't succeeded in overthrowing this stupid cult, but I have no doubt that someone will eventually.
So that one day my soul can rest in peace.
You who read this diary, I hope that this whole period is ancient history. Thank you for giving me your precious time.
Let me not let you forget me:
My name is Y/N L/N. I am 23 years old. I'm going to die tomorrow. But I don't regret it for a second.
To my dear wife; to the souls snatched by Death Eaters; to my friends ; to you dear reader. Signed: Flower.

Pour a little salt. ~ S.B.
Author’s Note: This was just something I wrote because I had a bad day and needed to have something good to come out of it, which I think this is??? Been years since I’ve shared my writing so this may be terrible, sorry. ☹️ It’s also kind of incomplete. Perhaps a series if people respond well? Anyway, happy reading!
TW: Some self-deprecating thoughts and dialogue, Ravenclaw ‘reader’, no use of Y/N, brief mentioning of Wormtail and Snape.
Don’t look in the mirror. Don’t look in the mirror. Don’t look in the mirror. It was the current mantra that was ceaselessly repeating in my head and coincidentally, the only thing keeping myself from tumbling over the ledge into the abyss below. For now. I haven’t the foggiest idea how I got here or how I came to be like this, but it seemed like there was nothing that was going to change anytime soon. Might as well learn to deal. Right?
I inhale deeply through my nose and slowly blink a couple of times, allowing the surrounding world to come back into focus, a welcome distraction perhaps. Same deep blue drapes and bedding, clothes strewn about, spare bits of parchment and quills littered on bedside tables and even on the floor, Pandora’s crystal collection placed sporadically - even though she will say it’s intentional - on every windowsill and lately, popping up in our socks. It was what I was used to seeing day in and day out, never changing, making a mockery of me as if I didn’t already know. Tiresome. Frustrating. Pointless. Could not have chosen three better words in my humble opinion. A sigh soon escapes and I shake my head vigorously in an attempt to get back on track. So much for a distraction, eh?
With a quick, and stupid, look back over my shoulder, I catch a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror and I struggle not to react, only managing to take in the ghastly bags under my eyes and the monstrosity, that some might call hair, piled on top of my head. Why did you do that? Nothing good ever comes of it. You never learn. I flinch, reeling back a bit before swallowing the lump that had formed in my throat. One would think I would be used to the commentary that just so happened to swirl through my mind as if it owned the place, but no - I’d never be that lucky.
~
I somehow managed to make it to almost all of my lessons that day without incident. Until Potions. The positive affirmations I had given myself to recite quietly clearly weren’t enough since it only took one single moment to unravel everything completely and send me into a deep spiral. Not that I was doing all that great to begin with, mind you, but I liked to think I had a pretty decent handle on things.
I was in my 6th year at Hogwarts and somehow ended up in Advanced Placement Potions with Slughorn at the end of the day, how thrilling, and let’s just say that nothing was going my way. We were working on Scintillation Solution and apart from putting incorrect amounts in, I was also hellishly allergic to the powdered unicorn horn and of course this particular potion used quite a bit of it. Unavoidable contact at best. Nevertheless, I grit my teeth and got to work, hoping that I would have something that would at least get a passing mark. Oh how wrong I was.
The space next to mine was taken up by none other than Snivellus Severus Snape, one of the most gifted in Potions, and from the moment Slughorn began, I could sense the animosity radiating off of him. Was it directed at me? No… It was for James Potter, who had arrived before anyone else to take up Severus’ usual spot next to Lily Evans, a self-satisfying smirk set upon his face. Which means I got the shit end of the stick. Wonderful.
I keep my eyes averted and focused dutifully on my Scintillation Solution, not paying the greasy git a single lick of attention, until my wand slips from my fingers and in a desperate attempt to catch it before it makes its new home in my smoking cauldron, I end up flinging powdered unicorn horn… Everywhere. I begin to cough, rough and grating, as the particles sneak their way into my sinuses, coating my skin and robes, the table; yeah, I wasn’t kidding when I said it was everywhere. And to make matters worse, like the allergic reaction I was having wasn’t enough, I even managed to get some on, you guessed it, Snape. The world must really hate me.
“Are you that incompetent that you can’t even hold onto your wand without making a proper mess? And you’re supposed to be a Ravenclaw,” Snape sneered with a distasteful curl of his upper lip. “You should be resorted back into Hufflepuff for how daft you are. And to think, I could’ve been sitting next to Lily.”
Now, in hindsight, he could’ve said a lot worse. Truly. I just couldn’t stomach it. Not after how I was this morning, head in a tizzy, not knowing which way was up, down, or sideways. It hit a little differently and I felt the familiar prickling sensation behind my eyes. Don’t cry. Don’t cry. Don’t cry. I bite down on the fleshy inside of my cheek and clench my hands into fists, already feeling my body begin to shake and drop in temperature. I felt cold. Detached. I needed to get the every loving fuck out of here.
“Oh! My dear! Are you alright?” Slughorn. I swallow thickly and keep the tears at bay with all of my might before glancing up at the greying Professor with a tight smile, “Splendid. Although, I wouldn’t mind a trip to the Hospital Wing if that’s alright, Professor.”
“Of course, of course! I will excuse you for the rest of the lesson and come see me after Madam Pomfrey tends to you, I will allow you to redo your Scintillation Solution at a later date.”
I flash another tight smile in thanks as I shove my wand into my robes, grab my bag, and hightail it out of there. I catch the concerned looks from Lily and Sirius on the way, but with a slight shake of my head, I dismiss them both, classroom door slamming shut behind me.
~
“Madam Pomfrey fixed you right up! You look right as rain now!”
“Thanks Pete.” I squeeze his shoulder and offer my usual tight smile, not wanting to offend the poor guy when he meant well enough. “I feel much better as well.” Liar.
James tore his eyes away from the petite redhead in the corner that was currently talking with Marlene McKinnon to spare a glance my way, a small frown taking root on his lips, “Are you sure? Snivellus looked pretty pissed and I can’t help but feel responsible. I mean, I did take the only seat he sits in.”
I roll my eyes and wave him off, not wanting his sympathy nor his guilt. A witch could only bear so much after all. “Don’t let it tie your wand in a knot. I’m rubbish at Potions, so something would’ve happened regardless of who was sitting there.”
The curly haired Marauder opened his mouth to speak again before Remus cuts in, “You aren’t rubbish at Potions. I’ve seen your marks and believe me, there are worse.” Always the gentleman.
“Yeah! Can’t be worse than Wormtail. He didn’t even make it into Advanced Placement Potions, the tosser.” Sirius.
“HEY!”
A chuckle passes through my lips and I flick my line of vision upwards only to be met with storm clouds, seeming to swirl around as they observe silently. I momentarily lose my breath and cough into a fist, looking away but not before catching the knowing glint flash within the grey.
~
Ah, Friday. Last day of lessons and I happened to have bribed Remus with copious amounts of chocolate that I would buy at Honeydukes next Hogsmeade trip for his in-depth notes for Ancient Runes. Seriously, always a gentleman. Despite the bribe, oops.
It was cool outside, wind crisp and causing the fallen leaves from The Whomping Willow to rustle around, the spidery branches whipping around in irritation, and my skin grew cold as a result. I guess the cream colored jumper I chose to wear wasn’t doing a very good job at keeping me warm. Pity. I rub my hands together as I walk along the winding path that led down to Care of Magical Creatures, thankful that I seemed to be the only student bonkers enough to be wandering about with the wind being the way it was. I wasn’t much of a people person and the thought of having to actually hold a conversation of merit made my skin crawl. I shudder with a shake of my head and kick a couple of stones on the path, watching as they skitter off into the grass, thoroughly enjoying my own form of entertainment.
CRACK!
CRACK!
CRAAAAACK!
“Oh for the love of MERLIN!”
Sirius? What the hell was he doing out here? And where the hell was he at? My brow furrows as I follow the source of the noise and Sirius’ voice, coming to the edge of The Forbidden Forest. Of course the arse would go in there. I mean, why wouldn’t he? I should know better by now at this point really.
I step past the tree line with a squint of my eyes, even when there was still light in the sky it was darker than ever within, and call out, “Sirius?”
Nothing.
“Sirius, is that you?!”
Nothing.
“SIRIUS!”
“OOF!”
I land on the ground. Hard. Rocks and fallen branches dig into my back as I groan, beginning to wiggle around wildly to get out from under the crushing weight on top of me. My ribs were digging into my lungs and I wheeze, pushing my hands against a solid chest and beginning to shove. “Get off of me!”
“Sorry darling. I didn’t see you there.”
I huff, “Clearly.”
There’s a flash of white and a reverberating chuckle before the weight is lifted, Sirius Black now plopped beside my still flat form, casually sitting cross-legged like he hadn’t just knocked the damn wind out of me seconds before. I sit up and brush off my arms before zeroing in on the sharp Aristocratic features of the eldest Black brother. “What the devil are you doing out here in The Forbidden Forest? Full moon isn’t until next week so spare me the pathetic story of ‘preparing things for Moony’, please.”
Sirius simply stares; eyes twinkling with amusement they looked like molten silver today and the infamous signature smirk playing at his lips, “And to think I was under the impression that everyone bought that story time and time again. Guess I was wrong on that one, eh?”
“Obviously.”
“Okay Severus.”
“What did you just say?”
He holds up his hands then, slender fingers adorned with rings that matched his eyes and the knuckle tattoos that he and James thought were an ingenious idea one night after a bottle of Firewhiskey. “Nothing darling. Nothing.” Our eyes meet once more and I feel a warmth spread from the top of my head and down the length of my spine, goosebumps pebbling up as I shiver. The fuck was that? “Right. Are you going to answer my question or sit and stare some more?”
“I think I could stand to sit and stare for just a bit longer.”
If there were ever an Order of Merlin for the biggest eye roll one singular person could perform, I would’ve won. “Fine, be an arse. I’m leaving.” And with that, I stand and brush some more leaves off, stalking back towards the tree line and the awaiting path that led back up to school.
“Oi! Wait a minute! Let me walk you back!”
I ignore him and keep making a beeline up the path, Hogwarts being my destination and I needed to get there. Quickly. All I wanted was to get back to my dorm so I could get warm. I swear it had gotten ten degrees colder since being in and leaving the forest. I was shivering like mad now and I didn’t see it letting up until I got inside.
“Hey! WAIT!”
I don’t know why I stopped, but I did and with an exasperated sigh escaping my throat, “Bloody hell, Sirius! What do you want?! I’m freezing my tits off and I want to get inside!” I whirl around and cross my arms over my chest, hands buried into my armpits to starve off the chill, and fire in my eyes. I truly loved all of The Marauders, but I was at my wits end with this particular member of the group and he was about to see my wrath if he didn’t tread lightly.
Sirius stopped a few feet in front with raised eyebrows, that same bit of amusement still present, “No need to bite my head off. I told you I would walk you back and I intend to do so. Even if you are particularly cranky today and have been for the last few days might I add.”
“Cranky? I’m not cranky. I already told you that I’m freezing and want to get inside. Not my fault you can’t take a hint.” I bite back, taking a step further back as Sirius mimics by taking a step closer. The man was infuriating, I tell you.
The taller male looks even more amused, probably just to spite me, and takes another step closer, “I’m actually very good at taking hints, so with that point being made, allow me to elaborate further just to show you how right I am…” His tongue flicks out to lick his lips just as he takes another step, but this time I have the mind to step back again. “Why do you keep moving away when you clearly don’t want to?”
My breath catches in my throat and I freeze, eyes widening a fraction before I force a look of indifference, “What are you on about, Sirius?”
“I think you perfectly well know.”
“I don’t.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive.”
“Hm.”
That one little syllable grated on my nerves more than a full blown soliloquy would’ve and I clench my jaw, turning on my heel and practically sprinting up the rest of the pathway until a hand wraps around the upper part of my arm, putting all movement to a halt.
Bloody HELL.
“Wha-?!”
“I said I was walking you back, so no snarky comebacks. Just walk.”
Well, alright then.

wc: 2k
For a few hours there, you were ready to write this down as the worst day of your life.
Sharing a flat with your best friend was beyond a dream, and most days Mary was the most wonderful roommate you could ask for. She is one of the best cooks you know and she happily trades you cleaning up the common areas for making you dinner most nights. Her girlfriend, Lily, is a wonderful presence in the flat and the three of you have already established a tradition of wine night every Sunday. It was great.
There was mostly one problem – landlords in London were not known for being reasonable, and for the first while of living here, you were only given one set of keys. He had insisted that because "you girls are such close friends" you could get around with only one.
You knew he was just too lazy to have a copy made, but you weren't legally allowed to get it copied yourself without his permission. Thus far, it had been an endless back and forth over mail, and until you resolved it with him, you, Mary and occasionally Lily had to get by with this one key.
Which worked well until this wonderful Thursday afternoon where Mary walked downstairs to open the main entrance door for you because she had the keys – and promptly forgot the keys inside.
While in the middle of cooking dinner.
First floor flat with the window cracked open, just too high for you to climb into, and the keys locked inside with the dinner on the stove.
In other words, you were fucked.
“I've never had to call the fire department before.” Your voice was strained with anxiety as you walked back and forth before your front door, biting your nail beds until they bled.
Mary sat on the pavement with her head in her hands. She was more embarrassed than she would like to admit – more so about her ADHD making her forgetful than about the fact that she sat in her "I HEART MILFS" pyjama t-shirt in public. The first part you thought was no problem, but the second one was making you a little red faced as people walked by.
“Believe it or not, neither have I,” Mary replied defeatedly. “Can't be that bad, can it? Oi, stop that.”
She had noticed your biting. You merely switched hands before continuing. “What even is the protocol? What do you say, what–”
Your potential tirade was cut off by the sound of sirens. Your shoulders hiked up like you were preparing to be sent into the fire yourself, ready to face off against this 40-something-year-old man with a gruff personality you imagined stepping off the truck.
Around the corner came the large fire truck, and already opening the passenger door and hanging half-out was – the most beautiful girl you had seen.
Suddenly you understood why people fancy uniforms. She was of average height and around your age. Her blonde hair was all messed up in a way most hairdressers could only dream of achieving purposefully, with baby pink streaks near the bottom around her shoulders. You could see her white top and suspenders through her zipped down uniform jacket. A huge grin warmed her face as she set her eyes on you, jumping down from the truck while it was still slowing down and smoothly striding up to you.
You became acutely aware that you almost had your thumb in your mouth and promptly dropped it, staring at her.
“Evening, ma’am. You called?” The firefighter asked as she came up to you, teeth showing as she smiled.
It took you a minute to register that you were the ma’am in question. “Yes! I did- uh, we did.” You stumbled over your words, pointing over at Mary who was getting up from the curb with an entertained expression.
The goddess herself lifted an eyebrow as she looked at you, crossing her arms over her chest. You couldn’t see much through the uniform, but you could see from the way she carried it and herself that she was strong.
“And?” She asked, words coated with a small laugh.
You could kick yourself.
“Sorry, sorry,” you laughed nervously, looking past your firefighter to where her colleagues were clambering out of the truck – four are too many to send for this, right? “Sorry, I’m just a bit stressed. Uh, my name is Y/N, over there is my roommate Mary. We live in flat 101 up there and unfortunately managed to get locked out while cooking dinner. Could we use your ladder to climb up through the opened window or something? We don’t want to be a bother.”
Her gaze never left you, a certain mirth dancing in her striking blue eyes. “Right, lovely to meet you, darling. Name’s Marlene, over there we have my crew James, Sirius and Remus. We’ll get this right sorted for you, you're no bother.”
She turned ever so slightly to wave and shout something to the boys by the truck as they started stretching out the ladder to reach the window. Meanwhile you looked at Mary with an expression you hoped read “HELP”. The absolute menace of a girl that she was had the audacity to laugh at you, pulling her phone up to type furiously, presumably updating Lily on the situation.
You were startled out of feeling sorry for yourself as Marlene came back up to you. “What is it you’re cooking up there?”
You turned to Mary, glad to be able to defer the question as your face became increasingly warmer beneath her gaze.
“I was just starting on some biryani,” she supplied, a bit abashed herself.
“Good taste.” Marlene grinned between you. “Biryani’s a bit tough to burn, so we’ve probably not got an emergency on our hands. Either way, I’ll be quick.”
To your half-delight half-horror, Marlene zipped her uniform jacket the rest of the way down and began taking it off. You made a guffawing sound that caught her attention and made her look up at you through her lashes as she shimmied out of it. “Everything alright, princess?”
"I– you really don't have to climb up, Marlene, we can do it. It's our mess." You hoped she saw past your flustering to see your genuine concern.
Marlene just laughed heartily. "It's my job to climb up and down that ladder, I think it's fine. Can't risk injuring a pretty girl like you."
Before you could respond, one of her colleagues whose names you had already forgotten, came up beside her and slapped a hand on her shoulder. “Marls, don’t kill the poor girl before we get her back in her flat.” He flashed you an equally dashing smile. “I’m James. Just say the word if you need protection from this one.” He jutted his thumb in Marlene’s direction, and she promptly hung her uniform jacket on it.
You're not sure what emboldened you, but past all your blushed stuttering you managed to say, "Thanks James, but I don't think I want protection on that front."
Marlene’s smile turned genuine as she turned back to you and started walking backwards to the ladder that the others had now positioned just below your window. “Good to know.” She winked at you before starting her ascent on the ladder.
“Where’s your kitchen, darling?” Marlene called while halfway up. Her biceps were flexing beneath her tight white top, on full display while her uniform trousers hung low on her hips. You had to shake your head to not be distracted.
“Just to the right when you go through the window,” you called back. You swore you heard a mumbled “thanks princess”.
You did hear some snickering behind you and turned over your shoulder to see Mary whispering with the tallest of the firefighters, one with tawny hair and some mean scars across his nose. They were looking at you and covering their mouths slightly, entertainment written all over their features.
“Making friends, Mary?” you asked, raising an accusatory brow.
“Just following in your footsteps, princess,” she replied, earning a laugh from the other firefighter before he schooled his face beneath your gaze.
You swear you could have kicked Mary if it wasn’t for these literal officers around you.
“I’m in!” Marlene called out jovially as she climbed in through your window and disappeared out of sight. Your attention was immediately drawn to her again.
“Would you mind going up to your flat door, sweetheart?” James asked as he began pulling the ladder down with the last firefighter's help, the one with dark long curls. “For when Marls opens it?”
Upon the request, your legs moved on their own accord up your one flight of stairs, seemingly drawn to where Marlene was. When you made it to your flat door, your first moment alone, you held your face in your hands and schooled your breathing. Too many things to be embarrassed over happened back to back and you were about to be put through even more.
Before you were quite able to gather yourself, your front door opened with a flourish. With one hand still on the handle and the other dangling your keys, Marlene stood before you, grinning. “Fancy meeting you here, princess.”
“Thank you,” you breathed out, beyond relieved to finally see the inside of your flat. You took the keys she held out to you. "Really Marlene, thank you so much, you're an actual lifesaver."
Her expression softened slightly, lips falling into a more genuine smile, though her air of bravado remained. You were beginning to wonder if that was just how Marlene was.
“Does this happen to you girls often?” She asked with a raised brow, crossing her arms over her chest as she leaned on your doorframe. You tried and failed not to look at the flex of her muscles.
“No, this was a first for us both. Long day, apparently.” You scratched the back of your neck, trying to laugh it off. Marlene’s eyes followed the movement.
“Don’t be embarrassed, darling, it can happen to the best of us,” she said then, reassuring hand reaching out to squeeze your shoulder. “If it ever is to happen again, call us up on 999 like you did today, yeah?” Then, she took a step closer and handed you one of your own post-it-notes with an unfamiliar handwriting across it. “But if you ever want a more personalised course in fire safety, then this number is much more effective.”
You took the note from her with trembling fingers and when you looked up at her, you couldn’t help the wide smile that took over your face. Her energy was contagious.
“I sure will.” Your voice was barely a whisper, slightly in awe.
"Great way to start my night then," she said with a wink before swinging past you with an elegance no one should be able to possess in those clunky trousers. "See you around, princess."
As Marlene disappeared from sight and you heard the loud friendly laughter downstairs from her and her friends, you entered your flat. She had turned off the stove and put the pan aside, nothing burned past the point of saving.
With a sigh, you dropped down on your kitchen table, glancing out through the still-opened window. There, Marlene was already looking up at you while hanging out of the firetruck, much like she had been earlier. She waved wildly at you, blowing you a kiss.
You though then that maybe, just maybe, this didn't wind up being the worst day of your life after all.
Though you would be getting endless shit for it from Mary and Lily for the foreseeable future.

Why Couldn't It Be Us

James Potter x Lestrange!Reader
AN: This is a sneak peak but you can read this alone, without having to read the full fic.
Summary: James grappled with the reality of loosing the love of his life.
WC:3.4k
CW: So much yearning and spiralling. So much angst no comfort what so ever, Marilily, drunk!James, one night stands, drunken hook ups, reader is married
The pub smelled of stale beer, wood polish, and the faint tang of smoke from the fireplace in the corner. The walls were covered with faded photographs, posters for live music, and layers of peeling paint that hinted at decades of stories. It wasn’t the kind of place where magical folk usually gathered, but Sirius insisted it had character.
James took a long pull from his pint, leaning back against the booth, his glasses slightly fogged from the warmth of the room. Remus sat across from him, nursing a whiskey, while Peter sipped a cloudy gin and tonic. Marlene and Dorcas were at the bar ordering another round, and Sirius was at the jukebox, shuffling through the selection with the same intensity he’d use for a chess match.
Lily slid into the seat beside James, her cheeks flushed from the cold outside. “I don’t know why I let Sirius drag us here,” She huffed, pulling her scarf off and stuffing it into her bag.
“You’re here because you’d follow me anywhere, Evans,” Sirius called without looking up, a smirk tugging at his lips.
Lily rolled her eyes, but her fondness was obvious. “He’s insufferable.”
“Absolutely,” Remus nodded, chuckling when Sirius threw a random crumpled up paper at his head.
Dorcas and Marlene returned with drinks in hand, sliding them onto the table. Dorcas clapped James on the shoulder as she sat. “How’s our Golden Boy, then? Had a good day bringing shame to daddy’s potion business?”
James chuckled. “Pops’ got nothing for me anymore. I’m a free man now- no professors, no detentions, no overtime, just… endless possibilities.”
“And endless parties,” Sirius added, finally joining them with a triumphant look. “Found Bowie. You’re welcome.”
The opening chords of Suffragette City began to hum through the bar, and Sirius raised his glass. “To living dangerously and looking damn good while doing it.”
“To the Order,” Lily said suddenly, raising her drink. Her voice was steady, but there was a weight behind it.
A ripple of silence passed over the group. The Order of the Phoenix wasn’t a light topic, but it was always lurking at the edge of their conversations these days. The war was brewing- closer and darker every day- and none of them were naïve enough to think they could avoid it forever.
“To the Order,” James echoed, his voice quieter.
They clinked glasses, the sound almost lost under the music and the hum of conversation around them.
“You reckon we’re ready for it?” Peter asked after a moment, his voice uncertain- but his eyes held a determined fury that was a tad bit over shadowed by his flushed chubby cheeks.
“No one’s ready for war,” Remus said. “Not really. But what’s the alternative? We let You-Know-Who run the world while we sit back and do nothing?”
“He’s got a point,” Dorcas said, her dark eyes flashing. “We can’t just… hide. If there’s a fight, we’ve got to be in it.”
“I don’t want to hide,” Marlene said, staring into her glass. “I’m not afraid of them.”
“We should be afraid,” Lily said softly. “But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight.”
James reached over and took her hand, squeezing it gently. “We’ll fight. And we’ll win. That’s what we do.”
“And if we don’t?” Peter asked, his voice small.
Sirius leaned forward, his grin sharp and defiant. “We will. Because we have to. And because they don’t know what’s coming for them.”
For a moment, no one spoke. The weight of their shared resolve hung heavy in the air. Then Marlene broke the tension with a wicked grin.
“Enough of this gloom,” she said, standing and dragging Dorcas with her. “Someone say something worthwhile before I lose it.”
“Worthwhile, huh?” a familiar voice teased, light and playful, cutting through the hum of music and conversation.
James turned to see Mary Macdonald leaning against the booth, a crooked grin on her face and her eyes sparkling with warmth. She was bundled in a long coat, her gloves tucked into one pocket, and her hair slightly damp from the winter drizzle outside.
“Speak of the devil,” Marlene said, smirking as she dropped back into her seat. “And she shall appear.”
Mary raised an eyebrow, tilting her head. “Was I summoned for something specific, or are you all just this predictable?”
“Predictable? Us?” Sirius scoffed, his grin widening as he stood and slid out of the booth to make room for her. “Mary, darling, you wound me. I’m nothing if not a mystery wrapped in leather and charm.”
“And bad decisions,” Remus muttered into his glass, earning a bark of laughter from Marlene.
Mary ignored Sirius’s antics and slid into the booth beside Lily, who shifted to make space. Her smile softened as she leaned closer to Lily, her hand brushing against hers. “Sorry I’m late.”
“Worth the wait,” Lily replied softly, her cheeks flushing.
James felt his stomach drop.
Mary cleared her throat, sitting up straight. “Actually, I had a reason for being late.”
Lily’s hand slipped into hers, and James immediately felt the shift in the air. The kind of shift that made your heart pound, even when you didn’t know why.
“We have news,” Lily began, her voice steady but her green eyes bright with emotion. She glanced at Mary, a shy smile tugging at her lips.
Mary took over, her grin widening. “We’re getting married.”
There was a stunned silence, like the universe had paused just long enough for everyone to process her words.
Then the booth erupted in cheers.
Dorcas was the first to leap up, nearly knocking over her drink as she threw her arms around both women. Marlene was right behind her, practically pulling them into a group hug as Sirius whooped loudly.
“Bloody brilliant!” Sirius crowed, his grin wide and uncontainable. “Knew it’d happen eventually. You two are disgustingly perfect.”
“Disgusting,” Remus agreed with a smirk, though his tone was warm as he raised his glass. “To Mary and Lily. Congratulations.”
Peter echoed the toast, his round face flushed with excitement.
James raised his glass too, plastering a wide grin on his face as the others cheered. He even managed to laugh when Sirius made some terrible joke about Lily finally having a chance to wear something “outrageously frilly.”
But inside, he was breaking.
That should be us.
The thought was sharp and unrelenting, carving through the noise and the laughter like a knife. He was happy for her- of course, he was. Lily deserved the kind of love that lit her up from the inside, and Mary was dynamite. He could see it in the way they looked at eachother, in the way their cheeks dimpled when she smiled.
But it didn’t stop the ache in his chest, the hollow feeling that spread with every laugh and every toast.
The music shifted, Bowie giving way to something heavier and rockin’. Marlene grabbed his hand, pulling him to his feet with a grin. “C’mon, Potter. Let’s see if you can actually dance.”
James let himself be dragged to the tiny dance floor, forcing a laugh as Marlene twirled him dramatically. She was a whirlwind of energy, and her jokes kept him smiling, but his heart wasn’t in it.
After a few songs, he excused himself, weaving through the crowd back to the bar.
The bartender was wiping down glasses, and James slid onto a stool, ordering another pint. He stared at the wood grain of the counter, letting the noise of the pub wash over him.
His drink arrived, and he took a long sip, trying to push down the emotions threatening to rise.
It wasn’t about him, he reminded himself.
But as he sat there, the laughter and celebration echoing behind him, he couldn’t help but wish- for just a moment- that things had been different. That he’d been enough. That he had more proof of your love, then just an apology and that last kiss.
James stared into the amber liquid in his glass, his fingers tightening around the cool surface. The sound of laughter and clinking glasses from his friends felt muted now, like he was watching the scene through a fogged-up window. He drained his pint in one long sip, setting it down with a dull thunk. The bartender raised an eyebrow at him, but James waved him off.
He was fine. He was always fine.
“Hey, you alright?”
The voice startled him, low and lilting, cutting through his thoughts like a blade. James turned to find a girl standing a few feet away. She was magnetic. Her hair shimmered under the dim lights, falling in waves she tucked behind her ear, and her eyes- curious and smoldering- seemed to pierce right through him. Something about her tugged at his chest, an ache that felt too familiar.
She looked a hell of a lot like you.
James blinked, trying to shove the thought aside, but it dug its claws into his mind, stubborn and unyielding. It was in the way she held herself, confident and just a little aloof, her smile teasing at the corners like she already knew him. Like you used to look at him when you thought no one else was watching.
“Fine,” he said finally, his voice rougher than he intended. He cleared his throat and gave her a half-hearted smirk. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
The girl tilted her head, unconvinced. “I don’t know. You look like you’re carrying the weight of the world or something.”
“Don’t we all?” He quipped, raising his empty glass.
She chuckled, low and warm, sliding onto the stool beside him. “I suppose we do. But most people don’t drink alone at a table full of friends. What’s your excuse?”
James glanced over at his group. They were still laughing, huddled together like they didn’t have a care in the world. Lily was leaning into Mary, her hand resting casually on her knee.
The sight made his stomach twist. He looked back at the girl, her expectant eyes waiting for him to answer.
“Celebrating,” He lied. “Big day. Lots to toast to.”
Her smile widened, and she raised her glass. “Well, cheers to that.”
They talked, or rather, she talked, and he pretended to listen. He was too busy trying not to notice the curve of her lips or the way her laughter rang like a bell. Too busy trying not to let his mind wander to you and the way you used to laugh at his jokes, even the bad ones. Too busy pretending he didn’t feel like he was about to shatter into a thousand pieces.
She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “You want to get out of here?”
James hesitated for a fraction of a second. Then he thought about Lily and Mary’s announcement. He thought about your last words to him, the ones he’d tried so hard to forget. He thought about the weight in his chest that wouldn’t let him breathe.
And he said yes.
She smirked and gestured to the door. He stood up. He was a gentleman, grabbing her coat and helping her slide it on. He chuckled at a playful remark she made- he flipped off Sirius as he wolf whistled after them.
He felt normal.
Her flat was small but cozy, filled with mismatched furniture and the faint scent of vanilla. James barely noticed any of it. His focus was on her hands, the way they tugged at his jacket, the way her lips felt against his, the way her laughter sounded when she stumbled backward into her bed.
He didn’t think about how her hair fanned out on the pillow like yours used to fan against the forest floor. He didn’t think about how her voice softened when she whispered his name. He didn’t think about the way she pulled him close, or how his heart twisted in his chest when he kissed her.
He didn’t think about you.
It wasn’t until later, when the room was quiet and she was asleep beside him, that the weight in his chest returned. James stared at the ceiling, the darkness pressing down on him. The ache in his chest was unbearable now, raw and consuming.
He slipped out of bed, pulling on his jeans and shirt in the dim light. The girl stirred, mumbling something he couldn’t make out, but she didn’t wake. James grabbed his jacket and left without a word, the cold air outside biting at his skin as he stepped into the night.
He didn’t remember the walk home, just the way his hands shook as he let himself into his flat.
James stumbled into his flat, the door slamming behind him as he shrugged off his jacket and tossed it onto the floor. The room was spinning, the edges of his vision blurred from too many drinks and too many emotions he couldn’t name. His chest ached, hollow and heavy all at once, and his head buzzed with the echoes of your voice, the ghost of your touch.
He dropped onto the couch, his trembling fingers fumbling for the phone. It took him a moment to find it, buried under a stack of unopened letters and old newspapers. His mind raced as he flipped through the yellowing pages, the parchment glowing faintly under the dim light of his wand. He didn’t know what he was looking for until he found it.
Lestrange Manor.
His heart thundered in his chest as he punched in the number, the dial tone buzzing loudly in his ear. He didn’t think about what he would say or why he was calling. He just needed to hear your voice, to know you were still out there. Still you.
The phone rang once. Twice. Three times.
“It's late.” The voice boomed in the distance before he heard a sigh against the receiver. “Lestrange Manor,” Your father’s voice.
James froze, the words caught in his throat. His hand shook as he gripped the receiver, his knuckles turning white. For a moment, he thought about speaking, about demanding to know where you were, about apologizing for everything, about-
He slammed the phone down, his breath hitching in his chest. The silence that followed was deafening, the weight of his mistake settling heavily on his shoulders. He raked a hand through his hair, his heart pounding as he stared at the phone.
Then, slowly, he turned the pages again.
Avery Manor.
The name stared back at him, mocking him, taunting him with the reality he’d tried so hard to ignore. You weren’t just gone. You were married.
He dialed the number before he could think better of it, his hands trembling as he pressed the receiver to his ear. His chest tightened with every ring, the seconds dragging on like hours. He didn’t know what he would say. He didn’t know if he could even form words.
And then, it answered.
“Hello?” Your voice was soft, curious, and achingly familiar. It hit him like a punch to the gut, stealing the breath from his lungs. He squeezed his eyes shut, his hand gripping the phone so tightly it hurt.
“Hello?” You repeated, a note of concern creeping into your tone. “Is someone there?”
James opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. His throat was dry, his heart hammering in his chest. He wanted to say your name, to tell you it was him, to tell you he was sorry, to tell you- everything.
But he couldn’t.
“...James?”
His breath caught at the sound of his name on your lips. The way you said it, so soft and familiar, like you knew it was him without even knowing. It broke something in him, something he didn’t know could still break.
"Hi." It was all James could manage. The word came out shaky, barely more than a whisper, and he winced as the silence on the other end stretched, thick and heavy.
Then, he heard you take a small breath. That sound- soft, familiar- tore through him, a sharp ache in his chest. He closed his eyes, the ghost of your touch burning on his skin, memories flooding back with every beat of his heart.
That breath. He missed it. He missed the way you breathed against his ear, the quiet exhale that came when his lips brushed your neck. He missed the way you'd laugh and scold him, pushing at his chest, pretending to be annoyed. "James, stop it," you'd say, your voice sharp but your eyes warm. "You’re going to leave a mark."
And then, you'd let him do it again.
“James,” your voice came again, quiet, tentative. His name on your lips felt like a lifeline, like it always had, but this time it hurt. This time it reminded him of everything he’d lost.
“I…” His throat felt tight, the words caught somewhere between his heart and his lips.
“I didn’t know… Avery had a landline,” James said, his voice cracking slightly as he tried to sound casual, but the slur in his words betrayed him. He cursed himself inwardly, gripping the phone harder as if the pressure could steady him. He just needed anything- anything to keep you on the line, to hear your voice for a little longer.
There was a pause on your end, long enough to make his stomach twist. He could imagine you standing there, your lips parted in surprise, your brow furrowed as you processed his words. Then came your voice, soft but laced with confusion.
“James, are you- are you drunk?”
The concern in your tone made his heart ache, but it also made him feel exposed. Vulnerable. He swallowed hard, forcing himself to laugh, though it sounded hollow even to his own ears. “What gave me away? The fact that I’m calling you at- what time is it?”
You sighed, and he could picture the way you’d pinch the bridge of your nose, your lips pressing together as you tried to decide whether to scold him or let it go. “James, what are you doing?”
The question hit harder than it should have. What was he doing? Calling you in the middle of the night, knowing full well it was a mistake? Torturing himself with the sound of your voice, knowing it would only make the ache worse?
“I just…” He paused, running a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling in the mess of it. “I just wanted to hear your voice.”
James swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he spoke, “I miss you.” The words tumbled out, raw and unfiltered, as though they’d been clawing their way up his throat all night. “I miss you so much it feels like I can’t breathe without you.”
“James,” you whispered, your voice strained. It was the way you used to say his name when you were trying to reason with him, to pull him back from whatever reckless path he was on. But now, it sounded different- sharper, more distant, like you were trying to remind yourself of the boundaries you’d set.
“I-” James started, his words slurring together, “I wish it was me. That it was me next to you right now, not him. It should’ve been me, yeah? It was always supposed to be me…”
You didn’t answer immediately, and the silence was unbearable. He could hear faint noises in the background- a creak, a soft rustling- and then, Avery’s voice, distant but clear, calling your name.
James’s heart seized in his chest. “No- don’t go. Please.” His voice broke, desperation dripping from every word. “Just- stay on the line. Don’t hang up, don’t leave me. Please.”
“James,” you said again, but this time it was different. Your voice was firmer, tinged with something he couldn’t quite place- regret, maybe, or guilt. “You shouldn’t have called.”
“Wait!” James shouted, gripping the phone tighter as though he could hold you there. “Don’t- just, please. Don’t hang up. Please, I-”
“James!” a sharp voice cut through his spiral, and he turned to see Sirius standing in the doorway of the flat’s tiny kitchen. He was barefoot, wearing only a pair of boxers and a shirt that was unmistakably Remus’s, the sleeves too long for his arms. His dark hair was messy, and his brows were drawn together in concern.
Behind him, Remus appeared, his face etched with worry as he rubbed a hand over his tired eyes. “What the hell is going on?” He asked, his tone softer than Sirius’s but no less serious.
James didn’t answer. His eyes darted between his friends and the phone in his hand, his grip tightening as though it were the only thing tethering him to reality. He barely registered the sound of your voice on the other end, hurried and quiet, before it cut out completely.
You’d hung up.

You’re a werewolf, aren’t you?

_______________________________________________________________
After being friends with Remus Lupin, you had wondered for months where he disappeared to every so often. You never noticed it in your first, second or third year, but as time passed, you started becoming more and more intrigued. When he would disappear, his friend group would also mysteriously go missing as well, playing it off the next day as they were busy revising when you knew for a fact that they never revised.
You began keeping track of his behaviour around the time he would disappear. You were sat in the library with Marlene Mckinnon revising for Astronomy. “Mary?” You popped your head up from the book you were reading. “Do you know where Remus goes every month?”
“Moony?” She replied, she had two piles of books, one for books she had read and the other was books she had to read. Closing her book and dropping it onto the small pile on her left, “I haven’t a clue, but he seems to disappear on full moons? Could be a coincidence.”
“Really?” You furrowed your brows, flipping the page and scanned the page with your eyes. “Well, I wanna find out where he goes!”
“Don’t go digging in business that isn’t yours honey.” She used that nickname often, you liked it. She was like your mum, but younger and less stress inducing.
“I need to know, it’s like…I’ve been friends with him for six years and he’s been disappearing every month for those years?” you started, bashing your pencil on your forehead “And it’s been years, I might just ask him.”
“Good idea.” She replied before picking up another book, ‘Moon Magic - The complete guide to harnessing the mystical energy of the Moon’
“Can i have that?” You asked pointing at the boom i. her hand, “Please?”
“C’mon!! I just got that one out!!” she whined. You outstretched your hand asking for it, reluctantly she handed it over.
“I swear i just need it for like…two days and you can have it back i promise!!!” You swore to her, “Thank you so much Mary!!”
“Any time Honey.” she said as you quickly shoved everything into your leather satchel and walked out of the library, making a break for the Gryffindor. common room.
You walked through the common room door, letting it shut softly behind you. You found a plush chair and sat down, dropping your bag and opening ‘Moon Magic’ your eyes scanned the page, reading the words silently in your head.
‘As the Moon orbits the Earth, the portion of illuminated Moon that we see changes – giving rise to the phases of the Moon. A full Moon occurs when the Moon appears as a complete circle in the sky. We see it as a full orb because the whole of the side of the Moon facing the Earth is lit up by the Sun's rays. The Moon produces no visible light of its own, so we can only see the parts of the Moon that are lit up by other objects. The Moon takes about one month to orbit Earth but thirty days to change from New Moon to New Moon.’
You learned about the moon cycle, you didn’t really pay attention to when Remus disappeared but now, you were more curious than ever. You recognised
“Hey Lily…” You said quietly, she was sat behind you, you spun on your chair and started facing her.
“What’s up Y/N?” She replied. You had no idea how to ask the question without sounding suspicious. So you asked about James…”Where does James go when he just like…disappears?”
“Apparently He goes to study with Remus, Peter and Sirius,” She responded, “Why?”
“Oh I just wanted to study with them!” you lied, it wasn’t a bad lie, you did like revising with them. “When do they normally go?”
“Well…They’re going in two days! You could just go with them then?” She said, smiling at you.
“Yeah! Thank you!!” You turned back around and kept working.

2 Days until the full moon…
“See!! I told you she’d show up!” James hollered from the table, pointing at you. “C’mon sit with us L/N!”
You sat down next to Peter, grabbing a sandwich. “Hey Peter, How’re you finding Care of Magical Creatures?”
“It’s going really good!” He replied, for the rest of lunch, you sat talking to the Marauders, laughing, crying, hollering. You looked at Remus for the first time properly. He had been looking the opposite direction the entire time so when he looked at you, you noticed a cut on his cheek.
“Remus!! What happened?! Are you okay?” You said, concerned.
“I’m fine Y/N, it was just an accident, I got scratched in Defense against the Dark arts a few days ago.” Remus replied, leaning on his palm, wincing physically slightly.
“Have you been to Madam Pomfrey? That looks really deep!!” You replied standing up. “You need to go see her!”
“No it’s okay! I’ve already been to her, I promise it’s okay! I was just waiting until it started to scab over so I could take the bandage off, I swear it’s okay!!”
“Alright…Well, I’m gonna go, I need to do something,” You stood up and hurried off, to your common room.

1 Day until the full moon…
“Mary!” You whisper shouted to Marlene sitting two feet away from you, she was looking through her telescope admiring the stars every so often she would look back at her text book and jot down notes about the stars onto the margins. You were sat with your telescope, half paying attention. You’d been waiting all day to see Marlene to tell her, the only lesson you have with Marlene is Astronomy so you had to wait a while.
“What?” she whispered back.
“I think I’ve figured where Remus and the other guys go!” You whispered, you looked away from your telescope. You shuffled close to her ear and began speaking.
“I think Remus is a werewolf,” you started, Marlene looked towards you, with this ‘are you being serious?’ look on her face
“Don’t be ridiculous! Why do you think that?” she asked
“Well…Remus and the rest of his friends disappear the same day every month, which is tomorrow, and then obviously they come back. Remus is obviously covered in scars, I mean he’s hot and the scars look really good however, last time he disappeared which was last month he came back with a cut on his cheek, he said it was an accident but it looked really bad!!” you continued talking, her mouth was agape, struggling for words. “Oh and one time, I was studying in the common room, and Mcgonagall came in with this goblet and discreetly handed it to Remus, I don’t think anyone else saw it but I did. I think it was Wolfsbane but I honestly have no idea!”
“Well…Even if he is a werewolf, why should it matter? You should support him no matter if he’s a six eyed alien monster,” she smiled at you, “Oh and I didn’t ignore your comment of finding him hot,” she smirked at you in the dark.
“Hey!! Don’t tell anyone okay?” You asked, “And of course I’m going to support him!!”
“Talk to him after the full moon okay? Don’t stress him out before hand!”

Time: 8:36
Location: Gryffindor Common Room
Night of the full moon…
You had been waiting all day for night time, by the time the clock showed 8 pm, you were ready to sit for hours and hours waiting for the guys to come back. You stood on the steps to the girls dormitory adorning your plain sheep’s wool pajama pants, the Gryffindor Quidditch team hoodie and a pair of fluffy socks. Your blanket draped over your shoulders as you quietly observing the four boys as they left through the portrait hole. After about a minute, just in case they came back, you walked slowly down the cold stone steps, and got comfortable on the settee in front of the fire. The red embers flickered and fluttered as the flames started to relight themselves.
For what felt like years but in reality was only about 5 you sat in front of the fire. Curled under your blanket, working on your Astronomy project which you had named ‘Constellation Cards and How the stars can change your life’ for the most of the time.
By the time the Marauders had returned you were asleep on the couch, blanket half covering you, your papers were scattered across the floor and your quill was falling out of your hand. The Gryffindor portrait opened quietly, James and Sirius were carrying Remus by the shoulders, he was grading his feet on the ground, too weak to lift himself properly so his friends were supporting his fragile frame. Peter was opening and closing the door silently. The four boys were exhausted, they were all basically shuffling to the stairs when Peter whispered, “What’s she doing here?” He pointed to your sleeping figure, they boys were walking towards the stairs when they turned around and saw you, lying peacefully.
“She’s normally up late, I heard she has insomnia,” James said quietly.
“Who is it?” Remus murmured, he couldn’t lift his head for long enough for his eyes to focus in the dimly lit common room.
“It’s Y/N,” Sirius whispered, lifting up Remus’s head long enough for him to see you.
“…She was probably up late studying again, that girl doesn’t know what’s good for her,” he replied softly, “She’s getting full marks in most of her classes, she’s really smart and really amazing, and…” Remus was breathing heavily, shattered.
“Hey Moony, just relax okay?” Peter said, “She really is amazing though.”
“I think I love her,” Remus said quietly.
“That’s nice mate…You should got for her.” James whispered. “You need to get some rest…That gash on your shoulder is really bad, I’ll help you treat it tomorrow yeah?”
“…Yeah”

Presumption - (marauders fic)
summary: before the war, you and your friends all wrote letters for one another in case you wouldn't be lucky enough to make it out alive. But will any of you be actually able to get through the pain of grief and lost to face with the last words of people you grew up with?
⤷ marauders x f!reader
warnings: includes swearing (harsh language), mention of death
word count : 669 words
A/N : some of the characters that have died in an original version, survived in this one + english is not my first language so i apologize for my mistakes <3
——————————— ◦°•♛•°◦ ——————————
Gathered around in the living room of Potter residence, their eyes filled to the brim with helplessness, not even daring to look anywhere else, but at the the messily folded papers scattered in front of them.
Seventy two wroten letters, eight per person. Eight for James, eight for Sirius, eight for Remus, eight for Lilly, eight for Marlene, eight for Mary, eight for Dorcas, eight for y/n.
And eight for man, who's orbs have been the only one to focus on anything but the pile, as his guts sinked more and more with every single muffled sob or silent cry from his so called friends.
Peter Pettigrew.
He knew what he was doing when he broke the unspoken rule of honor, he knew what he was doing when black outlines foully rested on his forearm, and he knew what he was doing when he helded up that bloody wand.
Yet he couldn't help it but feel sick with himself, disgusted, loathful when they get to he point of seperaiting the ones they will have to read.
With shaky hands, Lily handed out the letters to their owners, leaving on the floor exacly eight letters. All of them came from the same quill, written in the same font, by the same hand.
"We should open them" hoarse, berely hearable voice broke the silence among teens. Peter didn't have to take his gaze of the ground, to know they all looked his way.
Marlene hummed as a sign of agrement, few of them like Mary or Dorcas slightly noded their heads, but only one acted as if Peter's words didn't reach him.
He couldn't move, not even a bit.
Not wanting it to be the last goodbye, not like this. This wasn't the time.
He couldn't unfocused his eyes from her handwriting, the one he used to make fun of. To Remus from y/n. He felt as if she was whispering it right to his ear. He felt like everyone was.
"Remus?" well maybe they actualy were. "You're not gonna open yours?"
He didn't even bother looking at Dorcas as she said it, just shake his head no, trying to bring himself back to hearing her voice just this one time.
"We promised we would.. you promised you would" sirius's sentensce echoed through the room as he hosted himself up and shoved the paper into werewolf's chest. "So stop whining and take it 'couse you are NOT the only one who lost her"
Saying through clenched teeth with spit gathering behind them making it almost come off as an insult.
But Remus still didn't bugde, even when his friends hand is pushing on his heart. He got lost in his thoughts, too lost to bother.
Why is Sirius so obtrusive? Why won't he let him just griev in his own way? If he doesn't want to read it who cares, they can read theirs he's not stopping them from doing so.
"If i don't want to read it i won't-" pushing sirius's hand away, Remus stand up to be with him on face-to-face level "-Y/n would understand"
"Y/N'S NOT HERE" "AND WHO'S FAULT IS THAT?!"
Quick exchange of screams, was followed by the silence as two men seemed to burn eachothers souls with only use of stare. No one dared to say a word.
Not Sirius, not Remus, not anyone.
Especially not Peter, who was more than petrified of this question being brought up.
But how could he not be? He could never erase the look on your face when he pointed his wand at you, letting his sleeve slightly slide down, enough to let your gaze catch dark mark.
Poor you was so happy to see him, so happy to see one of your friends alive, only to find out he wasn't your friend all along.
The fear and betrayal in your eyes when they met his was what almost made him drop the wand, yet he didn't.
He killed you and ran off, like the coward he was.
And now he had the perfect opportunity to blame it on someone else.
"Weren't you suppose to keep an eye on her Sirius?"
