another thing i constantly expect to be more helpful than at this point i have reason to believe it will ever be is telling kids to think about quarters when they multiply by 25. again to me this is a very intuitive leap and if you ask most kids older than like first grade (and even some first graders who've done a money unit) how much is like 7 quarters they can tell you. but they simply will not connect that to 7 x 25. they just won't.

I feel so validated by the way Phil multiplies.
Getting the first 18+18=36, then thinking 36x2 which also means 36+36 and if we break it down into easier numbers to add, so we do 36+30=66. Finally is to add the last 6 by counting with fingers= 72
THAT IS EXACTLY HOW I DO MATH, I was doing the same operation in my head with Phil. I love him for that, It makes me feel less stupid.

𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐍𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐄, 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐂 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄: Born of the purest intent during her youth, Sayuri utilized her talents as a former shikomi into her current initiate technique. From the depths of Shinjuku where a young girl was introduced to the first taste of freedom, she honed the ability off the bright neon lights && bustling nightlife.  A homage to what she believed was hers alone, no one else's, Plastic Love is to be shared. Through her knowledge of how cursed energy flows, Sayuri vocalizes it begins within the gut flowing like water into the extremities, by doing so, it amplifies her output of cursed energy by 5 percent for a duration of ten minutes. When maximed at 15 minutes, the output will increase by ten, in rare && extreme cases, 15 percent with a drawback of shorting her endurance && stamina. When another sorcerer harmonizes their cursed energy with hers, they too will be granted the ability to tap into her proficiency && knowledge, amplifying their own abilities. For the few that can understand, calculate, while methodically timing the space in between - Black Flash will occur. The more Sayuri dances, the more of an output she is able to produce, what makes this an act of admiration for those who surround her? Plastic Love takes on the couples preferred dancing style, tailoring itself to personality alone. Sadly, by the start of the Perfect Preparation Arc Sayuri would discard Plastic Love as those she surrounded herself with are no more.

I’m giving this a dishonorable mention because even though it did an okay job of capturing the meaning of this individual line, it ignores the importance of Oda’s choice in words for the rest of the chapter.
The original line used the word “normal” instead of “mathematical.” There’s really no need to change it, since you could easily replace the words without having to alter anything else. By changing the words they cut out something important about Zoro’s character as a whole and in this scene in particular.
Zoro is a very rational and logical character, to a degree that sometimes it works against him. But on the flip side his logic isn’t bound by common sense. If anything, his logic aims to circumvent common sense and “normal” ways of thinking. It’s a subtle distinction which is why I’m getting salty about it. One Piece characters have a lot of depth and removing that subtlety steals the opportunity for readers to see that depth and complexity.

Isaac Newton's Contributions
My favorite physicist is Isaac Newton. He asked the questions for the ages:
"If an apple falls, does the moon also fall?"
And he realized that he didn't have the mathematics to calculate a falling moon. So what did he do? He invented his own mathematics called Calculus. The theory was one of the greatest theories of all time, Newton's 'Law of Gravity'.
And so, during the 'Black Plague' of 1666, one of the greatest minds in history went from superstition and thrust[ed] us into the age of mechanics, [and] the industrial revolution. He changed world history. You can't beat that.
Einstein is way up there, so is Richard Feynman, but Isaac Newton tops them all.

You don’t have to answer, but how were you able to get extended time on your exams?
I was diagnosed with dyslexia and adhd (inattentive) when I was little, I kinda had extended time on exams since I can remember.
For collage I just had to turn in a bit of paper work to get approval for it.

Logic versus math versus syntax
8/2(3 +2)
First we factorize the parentheses
8/(6 + 10)
8/16
1/2
8/2(3+2)
First we solve the parentheses
8/2(5)
Then solve in order
4/1 x 5
20
8/2(3 +2)
First we solve the parentheses
8/2(5)
Then factorize the parentheses
8/10
4/5
8/2(3 +2)
First we solve the fraction
4(3 + 2)
Then we factorize
12 + 2
14
All these are logical ways to solve this problem. Mathematically only one is corrected. Most, if not all, the confusion can be solved by writing it in the proper fraction syntax, which doesn’t translate well into Unicode.
Clear and concise communication is key to effective problem solving. Depending on a person’s perspective they may have a different way to approach a problem. It may be wrong but it still makes sense if you can approach it from their side.

Livestream at 5pm PST/ 6pm MDT/ 8pm EST!
My partner had a successful test stream yesterday and is doing her first long stream today at 6. She'll be doing math research and taking questions if people ask. She wants to share her process as a women in STEM, mathematics specifically, working on her research. She's very cool and cute so go say hi! And if you can do so, p-lease consider donating. Money is really really tight for us right now and we could really use some of that mutual support mutual aid.

There’s some common threads I see in the anti-voting posts going around, and I feel like I need to discuss some of them. Let’s start with the biggest one:
Voting to punish evil. I see lots of variations of this. Biden is supporting Israel, therefore we can’t vote for him. Is there any viable candidate who would stop the genocide? I don’t think the anti voting crowd actually cares. They are appealing to moral feelings rather than political strategy, because strategically, you have to realize that voting is not going to change foreign policy, and that change has to be pushed by other means. It’ll probably be something in the long haul.
Democrats should run someone else. First of all, this is a shit strategy. You don’t primary your president in the second term unless your party is falling apart. This may come from people from countries where replacing the head of government is easier, but the POTUS is the de facto party head. Also, going to the lack of thought to the goal — do you know someone willing to primary Biden and able to win who would do the things you want?
Biden hasn’t done anything anyway. This is just a way to bat away pro arguments. There’s plenty of lists of progress on lots of things. Student loans, insulin price caps, regulations, anti-trust.
Putting the entire Palestinian genocide on Biden. I’m not saying there’s not culpability there, but understand that the entire US government is in support of Israel, on both sides. It was a miracle we got a handful of Senators to call for investigations. We should cut off aid, absolutely. Who’s running to do that? And keep in mind that Israel chose to engage. US officials would have liked a more limited response, not out of care for Palestinians, but because they know from experience that it will come back to bite Israel in the form of newly radicalized Hamas recruits.
Liberals just have no hope for change. This is a new one. Just some idea that people are stuck in a rut and that’s the reason the two party system exists. The two party system is a mathematical consequence of the way we vote. There is reason to hope for change. The change, though, whatever means you choose, will take decades. Keep working at it. The hope is not that this election will fundamentally change things. The hope is that many small political actions over the years will push things forward.
Funnily enough, I haven’t seen a whole lot of third party promotion, just lots of this rhetoric aiming to punish. When voting, ask yourself:
Is this problem I have with this candidate something that the other candidate would be better on?
Are there other political actions I can take that will help?
What things can change with a different President or Congress, and what needs to be pursued by other means?
Withholding your vote as a punishment isn’t really going to help. Biden doesn’t know who you are or why you are not voting for him, and there is no one with a chance of winning that will do everything you want. But you have other means. Protest, organize, donate, build up alternatives, advocate for a different system.
Vote to give yourself space and get a little bit. Do other things to keep things moving.

Ola is a Mathematics teacher and a graduate student in north Gaza. She was studying at Al-Azhar University and teaching at a school when the occupation attacked. Her home, workplace, and university were all destroyed, leaving her without a house or a way to support her family.
Following the destruction of their home by the IOF, Ola and her family were displaced to a shelter. Repeated bombing attacks have forced them to flee multiple times since then. They are currently still in north Gaza, where food and other basic necessities are extremely scarce.
The price of food in north Gaza is extremely high, and Ola and her family are starving. She is trying to raise money so that she and her family can afford food and water. They want to stay in north Gaza and hope to rebuild their lives there one day, but they are struggling to survive.
You can directly help a Gazan family survive famine and genocide by contributing to Ola’s campaign, and reposting the link (https://gofund.me/89e42c74) on your social media accounts.
Thank you
Ola is verified by @suad-ahmad

im making a post to support the fundraiser of ola @olagaza this is a verified campaign and is #205 in el-shab-hussein and nabulsi's vetted fundraiser list
ola is a graduate student and math teacher from gaza. she was studying at al-azhar university and had just started teaching mathematics at a school when the war began. she was very happy and excited to be teaching and to move into this chapter of her life, but because of the war everything has changed.
her neighborhood, home, university, and the school she taught at were all completely destroyed in the bombings. her and her family lost everything and are now displaced living in shelters with very few of the necessities people need. theyve been forcibly displaced multiple times since then due to the genocidal israeli armys constant changes to the size and location of 'safe zones,' where they often kill civilians with impunity anyways. theres very little food or clean water available and its priced far higher than most people can afford.
i dont think many of us reading this can truly understand what its like to live like this, with no food or shelter, with the threat of death and torture hanging over you at any second– but please try to put yourself in her shoes for a second. ola and i are the same age, and were both graduate students. but while my classes are going to be starting soon, her school (and all the schools in gaza) were completely destroyed or rendered inoperable. many of the students have been killed. reports say that the rubble itself will take years to clear. if i think about what my city would look like right now with the same level of devastation that exists in gaza its almost hard to comprehend because its such an insanely horrific level of destruction. why should this be acceptable or simply background noise to people just because its happening to gaza and not to a western city?
please share and donate. ola's campaign has been going slowly lately but the situation in gaza is not getting any better. do not let this die down just because this genocidal war has been going on for so long. things are getting worse and your donations are a serious lifeline to families on here. what you do actually matters, so please donate.
$31,630 raised of $50,000
