General Fest guidelines

Fest participants and enthusiasts are welcome to join us on Discord here.

Due to the nature of the theme and for the mods’ sanity, this fest will be 18+ only.

Prompting guidelines

Submit your prompts via the Google form [link to be added]. You may submit up to 10 prompts. 

You can submit prompts without intending to participate in the fest afterwards. 

MCD must not feature among the DNW/squicks. This goes against the spirit of the fest.

As this is a HP fest, all prompts should be for this fandom. 

All eras, all characters are welcome. 

Claiming guidelines

Claiming will be done via Google form [link to be added]. 

You can view the available prompts here [link to be added]. Please give 24-48 hours for an email confirmation.

You may only claim one prompt at a time. If you submit your work before the deadline, you may claim a second prompt. 

If you do not plan to complete your claim, please contact the fest mods so we can free your prompt for someone else. 

This is an anonymous fest, please do not share your claim with others.

Submission guidelines

Submit your work in the AO3 collection

No minimum word count. Drabbles, short fics, multi-chapter fics — all are welcome. 

All works must be complete upon submission. 

You must add the fest mod account so we can change the publishing date when your work is revealed. No other changes will be brought to your work, but if significant tags are missing, the fest mods will contact you to double-check. 

You may gift your work to the prompter, but as a courtesy if you intend to do so you will need to respect their DNW/squicks.   

The death must be permanent (so not like a Voldemort-death from 1981).  

All works must select the Major Character Death archive warning. 

Betas are encouraged but not mandatory. If you are not having your work beta-read, please be sure to do a spelling, punctuation, and grammar check before submitting. If you are having your work beta-read, please credit your beta in the author notes.

What is Major Character Death (MCD)? 

This tag is used as content warning on AO3. It implies the death of an important character in your story.

For the purpose of this fest, we are looking for fanworks that involve the death of a major character in your story. It doesn’t have to be canon! 

There are no other restrictions on the content of the submitted fanworks. Dead Dove, dark, and grey themes are welcome. Please tag accordingly.

What is a major character?

A major character is a character that is central to your fanwork. They do not need to be a main character from the source material. Typically, major characters are those closest to the main character, or the main character themself. A character that does not appear or is not mentioned at all, for example, does not count as a major character.

We continue Remadora Fest with a fic that will make your heart ache; MCD (major character death) ahead!

Fifty-five

Summary: The approaching moon always brought illness and pain, weakness and exhaustion. But today’s ache felt more cumulative than before. The chill in his bones was sharper, like the pain of sweets on a sore tooth. The weariness felt deeper, as though the exhaustion itself was tired of existing for so long in its host.

Remus and Tonks survived the Battle of Hogwarts and have spent many happy years raising their son. But the pain and trauma of transformations has continued to plague Remus, and he fears his time is coming to an end.

“Tonks,” he interrupts gently, squeezing her arm with the slight energy he has remaining in his worn and weary body. “I’m 55 years old."

“Exactly!” she exclaims. “Hardly on your deathbed now are you? You know what this is, a mid-life crisis that’s what. Well that’s all it is, you’re going to be fine." 

“You know that it's different for me. You know that my life expectancy is going to be substantially shorter than yours. Werewolves rarely reach the age of 45, I’ve already far exceeded that. My body…” he pauses, needing to find the words and catch his breath. He continues even more softly, “my body just wasn’t made to endure this kind of abuse for so long."

It's time for tragedy for Fleur Delacour day! This one features major character death, so get your tissues ready. Snippet and link below!

Fleur had rushed over. Upon seeing the blood, dread had filled her. There was a dying house-elf and a body. It was so disfigured and broken, with blood spilling out onto the sand, dying it a deep dark crimson. She would have thought them unrecognisable if it weren’t for the girls’ busy brunette hair and being carried by her friends. Fleur rushed her inside, laying her down on her bed, and began stripping her to access the wounds. Slashes and bites blemished her skin alongside the scars of seemingly endless cruciatus curses. They were all raised, red, and angry.

She hadn’t even touched on the childishly scripted slur gruesomely gouged into the girl’s forearm yet.

It had taken all of her strength to not collapse under the weight of the damage dealt to the girl. Fleur dripped of sweat as she bandaged sections, cleaned wounds, and sutured others. The girl's eyes would flicker as she relived the nightmare, the shit show, that had unfolded. 

All Fleur could do then was continue her work to heal.

Summary:

Gathering potions ingredients in the Forest, trainee Professor Draco Malfoy stumbles across the Resurrection stone. Whilst examining it, he unwittingly Summons the shade of his former lover. Engulfed by grief, he begs Harry for a way for them to be together again. It will take ancient elemental water magic to achieve that which he craves so desperately. But can Draco conquer his lifelong fear of the Black Lake and all that lies within her to do what needs to be done?

Story Prompt: Rise Dark Gods AU w/ a side of TMNT mega-crossover

Summary:

Participants, the Bale welcomes you. Only one can reign supreme in the Battle Nexus. Will it be you?

In a world where everyone is either immortal or a god, life and death means very little. Nobody's had a good grasp of the sacrality of life in at least five millenia.

To a society that cannot die, certain death is fascinating. It is why Lady Octavia's Battle Nexus is so widely celebrated; her team does a phenomenal job of creating the illusion of certain death. Yet an illusion can only sate their obsession for so long. The surge of offerings at Leo's temples is a sign that people have gotten bored.

Perhaps it is time for the Battle Nexus to go multi-dimensional. Surely, the people will enjoy seeing alternate versions of their princes battle to true death.

⚠️TW: suidical undertones, blood, gore, graphic depictions of violence, MCD (but kudos to you if you somehow manage to get around it)

Themes:

Reckless endangerment in the first degree - Beings of power blatantly disregarding the preciousness of life, either because they do not care or do not understand it. Either way, life is meaningless to someone who can live forever.

Hints of classism - Beings of power using the lower class for their own entertainment. The Battle Nexus exemplifies this in its mirroring of the gladiator fights of Ancient Rome. The noble and powerful (gods, immortals, yokai) place bets and spectate the event from comfortable seats high above whilst the gladiators (mortals, in the case), typically slaves or of a lesser background, battle to the death for a prize/the title of champion.

The idea is that several TMNT iterations of your choosing are summoned to play a twisted, deadly version of the Lair Games in this Dark Rise AU's Battle Nexus. Their opponents are both each other and this AU's Rise boys, who control the arena and created the games being played. There are six rounds: one round against a space made by each brother, a fight amongst the players, and a final battle with the four gods in the flesh.

The space created by each brother reflects the domain they govern. Raph's round, for example, might involve facing childhood fears because he is the Patron of Childhood. Similarly, Leo being the Patron of Games and manipulative bastard that he is, would have his round be 4D chess, with him (White) as the opponent and the players (Black) as living pieces. Like the chess game from Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone except they actually die.

@hp-mcd-fest has ended, and I still haven't recovered from all the amazing fics! There were so many (SO MANY) good ones. MCD has always been hit or miss for me, but boy did these fics hit!! And hit reallll good. Here are 7 of my favorite stories from the fest!

💀 Five Graves by Chelonie [Triwizard Contestants, M, 3.7k] 💀 This fic tore my heart out and then pummeled it into the ground. And I would 1000% read it again. What if the Triwizard Tournament went wrong?

"The Departments of International Magical Co-operation and Magical Games and Sports have worked hard to ensure that during this revival of the Triwizard Tournament, no Champion will find himself or herself in mortal danger."

💀 I'll take a quiet life by @deliciousblizzardshark [Harry/Severus, E, 5.0k] 💀 A mourning Harry who is so desperate he brings Snape back from the dead. Absolutely delicious angst.

Severus is dead but Harry, who has just come to understand what they mean to each other, is master of death.

💀 Snake Eyes by @diana-skye [Myrtle/Tom, M, 1.3k] 💀 I ADORE Myrtle fics! She's just a girl, really, an insecure teenager looking for acceptance. The Tom in this is ruthless and amazingly characterized.

There’s a single moment, between yellow eyes and nothingness, where she remembers. [Or - What if Myrtle wasn't a random victim of Tom Riddle? What if he was someone she knew, even someone she loved?]

💀 Breakfast, interrupted by Hrair [Lucius/Narcissa, Hermione/Draco, T, 5.2k] 💀 This fic is so funny. I was laughing the whole time. Who knew MCD could be so enjoyable?

All Lucius Malfoy wants is to have a proper, pureblood heir and to eat his breakfast in peace. Is that really too much to ask?

💀 a long way back to the light by @swoontodeath [Colin/Harry, M, 3.8k] 💀 LOVED this fic. Just the right amount of creepy and also a dash of mystery. Colin is such an underused character imho.

Colin Creevey should have died seven years, three months, and four days ago. Actually, Colin Creevey did die seven years, three months, and four days ago. It just didn’t stick.

💀 Nine Hundred and Twelve by @cannibalschism [George Weasley, T, 5.1k] 💀 TIME TRAVEL, ANGST, WONDERFUL METAPHORS. This story has it all. I love the description of time travel in this fic—as unnatural, unknown. George is so desperate to get Fred back that he forces his way through the unyielding layers of time.

After long nights, impossible exams, and years of studying, my application to join the honourable ranks of those Wixen known only as Unspeakables has been accepted. Dad could not be more proud. Mum bleeding cried at the ceremony. My siblings congratulated me for finally doing something other than grieving Fred. They all said this would be good for me, that this would be a fresh start. They don’t know I did it all for you. All for you, Fred.

💀 Sartre Versus the Stoics by JK_Terfling_Can_Suck_My_Silicone_Dick [Draco/Harry, M, 19.5k] 💀 If you want to have a good cry, I HIGHLY recommend this fic. It deals with grief in such a wonderful, very real way. It definitely has the same vibes as Stop All the Clocks, another heart-wrenching Drarry fic.

After Harry Potter kills himself without warning, his friends and family are left to pick up the pieces on their own

Upon spotting the second chandelier dazzling and glistening near the first really confirmed how fucking fancy this particular room in Malfoy Manor was. Hermione knew that drawing-rooms were nice but had never been in one like this before, though thinking about it truly, Hermione hadn’t ever even been in a Manor before today. Hermione supposed that there was always a first for everything. Even if she was about to die today. Hermione Granger was his favourite crime and yet, Draco Malfoy would never be enough. Chapters: 1/1 -- Prompt: 4 - What if the chandelier in The Drawing Room never dropped and Bellatrix was able to follow through with her plans of torture…

Title: the curious case of theodore nottCharacters/pairing: Theodore Nott Rating: G Word count/length: NA Warnings: Murder-Suicide Summary: an enchanted portrait that grows old… until when? Chapters: NA -- Prompt: 48 - Portrait of Dorian Gray style-story. This could work really well as art. A has an enchanted portrait that grows old and foul. They stay young and beautiful forever, until one day, when the portrait is destroyed. The enchantment is broken.

Title: wrapped up in youCharacters/pairing: Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley Rating: T Word count/length: 6084 Warnings: Grief, illness Summary: At 32, Hermione is dying of a terminal illness. Ron nurses her, comforts her, and cares for the kids while he tries to grapple with the immensity of his grief. Chapters: 1 -- Prompt: Self-Prompt - Told in small notes from Ron’s pov, this fic centres on Ron’s grief as Hermione deals with the last stages of her terminal illness. His worries about their children. His attempts to make life more pleasant and comfortable for her. His reminiscing about their past. The core idea is death with dignity, hermione has a death plan that she selected herself and Ron is helping her act it out. About 2/3 through the fic Hermione dies and Ron has to say his goodbyes and cope with the aftermath with the help of his extensive support system.

Title: I’ll take a quiet lifeCharacters/pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape Rating: E Word count/length: 5007 Warnings: Dubious consent, pseudo-incest, anal sex, major character death Summary: Severus dies but Harry, who has just come to understand what they mean to each other, is master of death. Chapters: 1 -- Prompt: Self-Prompt - Inspired by Wandavision, Snape dies as canon, in the Shrieking shack, just as Harry discovers he loves him. Post-battle, he uses his master of death powers to bring Severus back and to imagine a perfect life for him, only cracks keep appearing until he finally comes to terms with having to let him go.

Little do they know it comes with a price. When Harry steps through the doors to Draco Malfoy’s shop Magical Mends they don’t know that both their lives will change forever. Despite the history between them they manage to find something within each other and they start building a life together. Just as their life settles down, Harry starts to show symptoms that turn out to be more than just stress and a diagnosis reveals that there is something wrong with his magic. Chapters: 7/7 -- Prompt: 85 - People are always awed by how powerful Harry Potter is. Little do they know it comes with a price. Harry slowly starts to show symptoms. A diagnosis reveals that he has too much power, his magic is slowly eating him up from the inside. Progressing faster and faster as time goes on. He and his spouse try to find a cure.

She understood what was happening, what was going to happen, much quicker than James had. She realised before he had even opened the door that something was very, very wrong. She held Harry a little bit tighter, gently kissing his head, whispering apologies and prayers into his baby soft hair. He smelt of softness, and baby and love and Lily inhaled it, knowing they weren't going to make it out of this.

She felt the rage burning inside her. How dare they? How dare HE? He was their family and he had betrayed them all.

All this came to her quickly, barely more than moments from the first knock, it took James longer to catch up to the reality of the situation they were in. Him having never once suspected anyone would betray him in his own home.
