Double Trouble Sexual Orientation Headcanons

I don’t know what inspired me to make this post, I just wanted to share my thoughts and the general vibes of various sexuality headcanons about our favorite enby lizard. Keep in mind, these are just my opinions, and they’re not backed up by evidence. This is all in good fun.

Under a cut because this might get long

Yes, I know that Jacob Tobia referred to them as gay in a tweet, and the SPOP Wiki lists them as Achillean based on this, but I’d argue this doesn’t technically count as canon, since it was never established in the show itself (the only possible mention being them calling Sea Hawk “Hot Stuff”), so I think people’s headcanons and non-achillean ships are perfectly valid. That said, I’m not against the idea of them being gay, and I can definitely see it.

Gay/Achillean: This definitely holds up. DT is a theatre kid, after all, and we all know theatre kids are gay (joking). They have big twink energy, and of course, the classic “That’s your cue, Hot Stuff.” Some of my favorite DT ships are with men (Bow, Wrong Hordak, Peekablue, and Sea Hawk). However, I still think they have good chemistry with Catra, and I personally like the headcanon that they had a crush on her and may have felt bitter at being second-best to Adora, thus fueling a bit of the meaner parts of their betrayal. I still imagine them with a preference for men, but I don’t think women are out of the running.

Lesbian/Sapphic: This one’s a lot less common. I’ve actually only seen one person headcanon this, though there may be a few more. They don’t quite give me lesbian vibes, but they do seem to have chemistry with Catra, and I like several ships involving DT with a woman (such as Catra, Adora, and Scorpia).

Bi/Pan/Omni/Poly: This is my personal headcanon and has been ever since I got to know the character. They just seem like the kind of person who has lots of affection to go around (whether this is romantic or sexual is up to you). I lean more towards bi or omni for them because, as I said, I feel like they have a preference for men, but I feel like they get crushes on women, too. Though, let’s be real, it’s more likely for people to crush on DT than the other way around. They KNOW they’re the hottest bitch on Etheria!

Aspec/Arospec: Another one of my personal favorites. Yes, I’m biased, since I’m ace, but COME ON, it’d be such a glorious defiance of expectations and stereotypes, and DT would live for the chaos they’d cause by oozing sexual energy and not being interested in doing a thing about it. They’d be this untouchable, irresistible them fatale and OWN IT. But I feel like they’d also be fun as an aroace because of their ability to read people. They’ve got it down to a science, and logically analyzing romance/sexual attraction in an attempt to understand it is SUCH an aroace mood. They also seem like the type who just wouldn’t be interested in dating, and as I said, it’d be great if this gorgeous, smooth-talking, flirtatious lizard in a skin-tight outfit wasn’t interested in sex. What a power move! Of course, you could also see them as ace and alloromantic, gray ace, demi, allosexual aro, etc. I like the idea of aroace DT as much as ace DT who DOES date. As for their intimate life, maybe they do, maybe they don’t, maybe they do and just don’t care much about it one way or the other, maybe they do only under specific circumstances—there’s a whole variety of ways an aspec and/or arospec DT can be written, and I think it’s one of the most interesting interpretations of this character!

Polyamorous: I mean. Obviously. DT is so easy to ship, so you might as well make them date everyone XD. But seriously, I love this headcanon and think it fits them very well, and it’s one that I include in daydreams and the few fanfic things I’ve written.

sexuality headcanon: i think toriel is ace! and sapphic for sure. not sure whether she's bi or gay but she likes women for sure. and seam... hmmmmm. i'm not sure about them. arospec maybe? i think they just. like who they like and don't put a label on it

otp: for undertale toriel i'm quite partial to goatbun. that's a REALLY cute rarepair. for deltarune toriel i've become increasingly fond of quoriel lately- milf4milf couples my beloveds💙 as for seam i dunno if i have one. i don't really ship them with anyone. an annoyances to lovers arc with them and swatch might be funny

notp: i am so glad asgore and toriel are never getting back together. partially because i think she's too good for him (in both universes), partially because i adore the way the uglier parts of them are contrasted and emphasized by the other. i like their relationship the way it is- broken. for seam again i don't think i have one. i'm neutral on seavil... i saw toriel/seam tossed around once or twice and i don't like that one just cause it's my belief that seam was toriel's old stuffie but that's just me

brotp: toriel and sans of course! i also like her little friendship with alphys in deltarune. she's always rooting for her💙and jevil and seam bring out such fascinating parts of the other. they're the red and black jokers!! i love it

first hc i can think of: well there's the headcanon that seam was toriel's old stuffed animal from when she was a kid that i mentioned earlier! i love that hc so much it's unbelievable. toriel rediscovering her inner child and relearning the magic she once knew by going on an adventure with her old stuffed cat💙💙💙💙💙

favorite line: god. "and my view of this world has grown darker, yet darker" always makes me go insane for obvious reasons. also "you wouldn't want to be caught out after dark"... what do they know. WHAT DO THEY KNOW. toriel-wise... i don't know if i have one! i have a feeling that she's gonna have a few lines in chapter 3 that are gonna make me ugly cry though

one way i relate to them: i don't think i really relate to either of them? they're both much older than me, for one thing. i'm not really in a position to relate to them. i still love them though :]

god’s being super helpful and helping them avoid ‘temptation’ it's the ultimate catholic aroace girl experience (been there haha)

I also hc Camila as aspec, the scene when she says "how hot" Todd is just serves me to reassure the fact that nuns aren't blind haha, they can experience attraction (independently of gender, see my other hcs) but at the end they've taken the decision of remain celibate -or not- and that comes from their personal values/principles, regardless of attraction of any kind. * I think Camila doesn't overthink in terms of attraction because it isn't something that common for her, therefore not "that hard" for her to ignore it.

Mother Superion is one of those characters I don't feel we have enough info in order to hc her orientation, and I don't feel comfortable doing so when that happens. Honestly I see her as straight haha, one of the clearest examples of women who actually experience attraction but their love, faith, and desire for service were stronger. That happens and it's ok. Same case with Yasmine.

I'm more inclined by aroace Jillian (she never mentions romance or sexual attraction in any way), but I can see why some hc her as sapphic. In KTY's words "whatever goats your boat :D"

I'm not entirely sure if I'll hc Ava as acespec or arospec. She actually seems -to me- like that one character of the complete opposite of the spectrum haha, either pan or bi.

*the conversation of attraction and religious women its is actually something I find deeply interesting. Having grown in a religious environment (read: being close with nuns haha) I can assure you that there's as much variety of orientations as in any other community. More than once a nun had told me that "they can find someone attractive, they just don't act about it ;)". Many had relationships before joining the church, one thing doesn't change the other.

I think that the idea that, historically, many many nuns have been queer (mostly sapphic and aspec) comes from the fact that from a very long time, religious life was the only "acceptable" role a woman couldn't take that didn't require her to marry a man. It was also a way to guarantee themselves certain grade of freedom and education, but that's a conversation for another time because this has already gotten too long and I'm digressing from your original question.

actually let me elaborate (albeit not eloquently i’m a bit out of it atm and kind of in a rambly mood) bc i think this is interesting okay so. i’m just going to focus on me and one other alter for a sec. so i am an arospec ace lesbian as we all are pretty familiar with, i’m also genderfluid so i feel gender envy towards men sometimes. i think men are incredibly beautiful but not necessarily attractive; sapphic, yeah, you get it. 

now klavier is a genderqueer man who experiences attraction in a distinctly queer way as well. he has a heavier preference towards men but has been interested and with women in the past and really anyone under the sun he is down for he just is generally more attracted to masculine people. he’s alloromantic and allosexual from my understanding.

what happens here is that me and klavier in a lot of ways are the closest bonded alters, not in that we are the actual closest (klavier and dahlia have a much tighter relationship especially because i front so often it’s hard for me to form relationships unless we’re co con right) but what me and klavier share is memories. klavier holds my relationship memories and i hold klavier’s relationship memories. so in other words klavier holds memories from me a nonbinary person when i was dating another nonbinary person, and i hold memories from klavier who was with another man. it’s worth saying i don’t really FULLY hold the memories from klavier’s situation but i do feel a lot of it and it’s like, as someone with low empathy me and klavier have pretty high empathy as a bond. these situations pretty much run parallel for us

this complicates my own life though because on one hand. i am not interested in men. however i happen to have the experience, albeit in a weird second hand yet first person kind of way, of being IN a relationship with a man as a genderqueer man. i also feel klavier’s presence strongly in day to day life.

so it’s not really that i’m attracted to men, but that i can feel a part of me is seeking a love alike to a nonbinary guy being with another guy. and that part is klavier but we are very close to one another. does that make sense? i think similarly though not as strongly klavier probably feels at times like he is a lesbian even though he is not.

so yeah. sexuality and systemhood is... confusing.

And honestly I’m a little eh if you just have the aro flag!! Add the alloaro one! The aroace one! Aroflux! It’s simple backgrounds come on! It literally takes a minute. Google. Not to mention! It could light up an arospecs day.

I learned so much from this community, about how confusing finding a definition of what romantic love is when you’re aro, about being disgusted by romance or finding it cute if it’s not with you and another person, even helping me realize my crushes were squishes! And just, I’m, so honored to be included in the aro community. I’m so happy we exist.

How can someone be AroAce and (Orientation)

There could be mutiple reasons!

1. They could be arospec and/or acespec and choose to use aro/ace as umbrella terms. 

2. They may have a hard time distinguishing their feelings for someone because they’re neurodivergent. 

3. They might still experience a different form of attraction; Alterous, queerplatonic, aesthetic, etc. 

4. They can be aroace and still have a preference! They might still desire a romantic/sexual/etc relationship and have a preference for who they’d want to be in a relationship with. 

Can I identify as aroace and (orientation)/is it a real thing?

Yep! You’re still valid and your orientation is still real if you identify as aroace as well as another orientation. You’re allowed to identify as aroace and another orientation. 

Are you inclusive of people who are genderfluid/nonbinary/etc?

Yes! We’re inclusive of anyone who identifies as lgbtq+ and anyone that identifies as ace, aro, and/or wlw in some way, even if you’re nonbinary or genderfluid.

I’m confused about my sexual/romantic orientation. What should I do?

Well first, there’s nothing wrong with questioning your orientation! You can take as long as you need to figure it out. You could try out different labels until you find one that feels right, or find one that you feel fits you best. It’s okay if it takes you a while to figure everything out. 

What does sapphic/wlw mean?

Sapphic and wlw are both terms to describe women loving women. You can identify as sapphic even if you’re bi, pan, etc. 

Is it okay for me to just refer to myself as (orientation) in some cases, instead of using every label?

Of course! If it’s easier for you to do that, or it’s something you’re more comfortable with, then go for it. Do whatever feels right to you. 

All of my friends are in relationships, and I feel out of place/feel like we’re growing apart. I’m the only one thats aro/ace/aroace. Is there anything I can do?

-Communication is important! Try reaching out to them and telling them how you feel. You might still grow apart, but it’s worth it either way to commnicate how you’re feeling. Perhaps you can come up with a solution that benefits everyone. If not, at least you can say you tried. 

-Being aroace shouldn’t mean you have to lose your friends to relationships, but sometimes you tend to learn who your real friends are. If your friends aren’t willing to listen to your concerns, then perhaps they’re not the right friends for you.

Is it okay to ask questions/ask for advice?

hey so I fully get when a lesbian says she (or he or they or ze or xim or whatever pronoun, but for the purposes of this post I'll be using she) doesn't like it when women use the term bi lesbian. like, I understand that. a homosexual biromantic (homobi) isn't a lesbian, a bisexual homoromantic (bihomo) isn't a lesbian, that makes sense to me. I'm not trying to step on that. even if a homobi or bihomo decided to only have sex with or date other women, it doesn't determine her orientation. asexuals can fuck their partners for their partners' pleasure if not their own but they're still asexual. I'm not sure about aromantics- I doubt it's possible for an aromantic to be in a romantic relationship for their partner's benefit because romance is a two way street [when speaking in terms of monogamous dual-partner relationships obvs]. I'm not an aromantic so I don't know, but even if there was a way for it to happen, and the aro's part in the relationship was more performative, they'd still be aro because their attraction was unchanged. if you are at all attracted to men in any way [besides comphet obvs], even if you choose not to interact with them romantically or sexually, you are still not a lesbian. I'm sure that all rational people can agree to these things.

so by these rules, it would logically follow that the definition of a lesbian is specifically and only a homosexual homoromantic. I mean we just established that that the rules are that lesbians experience attraction to other women and don't experience attraction to men. case closed, right?

ok but wait what about aromantic homosexuals and asexual homoromantics? uh oh.

are ace lesbians a thing? are aro lesbians? I mean, yes, rhetorical question, I've seen both en masse. but I don't see an outcry against those definitions since they clearly don't follow the established rules behind a lesbian identity. maybe it exists and I just haven't seen it. it doesn't matter. the point is, that if bi lesbians are not a thing- which they aren't- it should also stand to reason that ace/aro lesbians are also not a thing. but whatever, it's not a huge deal, terms like sapphic and gynephilic and wlw still exist. I mean, lesbians are lesbians because they love and wanna fuck girls, not because they DONT wanna date or fuck boys. a lack of attraction to specific genders is a lackluster and incredibly reductive thing to identify as (thus the trend of gold star lesbians is dumb & bad and doesn't take into account comphet) UNLESS it's a lack of attraction to ANY such as in the case of ace and aro.

so yeah, women who are homoromantic or homosexual aren't automatically lesbians if they're not both. bi lesbian is an oxymoron, and both bihomo and homobi. case closed, right?

I'm only applying basic logic here. transitive property. if a+b=c then b+a=c, if c-b=a then c-a=b, etc.

a lesbian who experiences attraction towards nonbinary people is not actually a lesbian. they would be bi in that instance. I don't experience romantic attraction towards men, but I do to women and nonbinary people, therefore I am biromantic [arospec as well but if I boil it down to the basics i'm biro]. I do experience sexual attraction towards all genders so functionally I'm pansexual but identify as bisexual because, well, mostly because of the colors and puns. regardless, despite my total lack of romantic attraction towards men, I am not a bisexual homoromantic, or "bi lesbian", because of my romantic attraction towards nonbinary people. the same goes in reverse as well. many self identified lesbians still will date and fuck dfab nonbinary people despite the total oxymoron. you're not a lesbian you're bi. that's how words work. it's not policing identity, just linguistics.

ok well if they count and attraction is based on attraction to women regardless of one's own gender... the only thing ensuring that there are no male lesbians (besides lesbians who use he/him) pronouns is the fact that straight men are not queer whereas nonbinary people are queer (since nonbinary people are trans and that's the T in LGBT which is synonymous with the queer community, 12 year old discourse idiots shut the fuck up) and lesbianism is intrinsically queer. also shut up terfs, trans women are not me and trans men are not women. I'll remove your spleens if you say one word. anyway NB lesbians are valid.

although if NB lesbians are valid, and nonbinary people who date women are still lesbians, and if the women who date them are still lesbians, then lesbian DOESNT just mean homosexual homoromantic, and aro/ace lesbians are still valid, and lesbians can be on a split attraction model which can include more than one gender in either their romantic or sexual orientation, so bi lesbians can theoretically technically still be a thing, so this whole fucking discourse is so goddamn stupid and pointless, and everyone needs to shut the fuck up forever about it. like holy shit there better be some legitimate logic justifying this discourse's existence because I'm done.

“How can you be aro ace and gay?” 

If you are asking this you are likely failing to realize that both aro and ace aren’t black and white terms. They allow for demi and grey areas. You’ll also note that neither aro or ace denote gender. In some cases, people will want to use the label “gay aro ace” in order to convey more meaning. Always use the labels someone provides you, because if you willfully drop one it’s erasure. If you add more then what’s given, you are labeling someone else.

Here are some real life examples:  I'm pan aroace, and basically, I am aro-spec, so because I'm on the spectrum, I self identify as aro, even tho technically I am not Fully Aromantic, (such as, grey/pan-romantic). That's just me personally, others identify differently. - anon

I'm aroace and most of the attraction I feel is aesthetic + sensual. Others might feel alterous attraction, etc, OR they might be demi/grayromantic and/or demi/gray asexual & shorten it to just "aroace" for simplicity. There are lots of ways ppl can be aroace and still label themselves as something else -monaters

I identify as a sapphic grey-aro ace, and the way it works is pretty simple. I don't experience sexual attraction, so I am ace. I very rarely experience romantic attraction, so I am grey-aro. When I experience romantic attraction it is towards women, so I am sapphic. In the end, I fall in all three spectrums, and I love all of my identities equally. Without any one of them my identity would be incomplete, and I love that I finally found the terms to describe my attraction -anon

i identify as aroace and gay. how you can be aroace and gay? well simply by not assuming everyone who uses these labels fits in the boxes you made up in your mind. i use labels that i feel comfortable with and that help me understand who i am. i still struggle. and i often don’t feel valid as either of these three identities, but that aside.

in a way, i see how it’s difficult to be those of these two identities (aroace / gay) and then in another way i just feel like they go perfectly together. i’m trans as well, you know. so the first time i actually admitted to myself something related to me being trans was a thought like, i wish i could be a gay man. in some ways, i have profoundly changed since that, as it was 4 years. but in other ways i still feel like that. later, years later i found out about being asexual and sexual attraction and how that is really not something i have ever experienced or could imagine. and then i started to identify as aromantic, because even the possibility of romance in my life gives me so much anxiety i can’t deal with it. and what i experience is platonic attraction because that is what i call it. period. i’ve had squishes in my life, intense ones. my gender is also fluid, and i feel like when i’m more masculine aligned i tend to me attracted to masculine aligned people as well, just as with other alignments. but also being attracted to a masculine-aligned person makes me feel more masculine. and just ultimately, i’ve only ever been notably attracted to masculine aligned people while i also deem an important part of my gender to be male. right now my platonic attraction is killing me so i asked myself, what reason is there that i should not be allowed to call myself gay? and i couldn’t think of any - just--elope i identify as aro ace and queer. in the past i've identified as aroace & bi/pan, but queer fits me better. but basically, i'm in the arospec & acespec. i feel sexual attraction, but vary rarely. when i do feel it though, the gender of the person doesn't really matter? i mean, i'm agender, more specifically apogender, so gender isn't a thing i understand. i've been attracted to ppl of many genders tho, so queer is good for me, and queer aroace is even better.  - anon

I'm aroace and bi! I'm grey-ace and my romantic attraction is hard to define, but it falls on the aro spectrum. I use aroace because 1. It's simpler, and 2. I've found that when I use grey-ace or aro spec, people tend to respect my boundaries less. It's as though they think that because I'm not "100% aroace" they have a chance or they might be the exception, when 9/10 times I'm still not interested (even if I have some kind of attraction to them). I use the labels gay, aro, and ace. The reason for this is that I do not feel romantic nor sexual attraction to any extent. However, I have a desire to be in a qpr with a person of my same gender. Very rarely, I mean VERY rarely, do I experience sensual or aesthetic attractions towards the opposite/different gender. That is just my experience, therefore I feel that gay aro-ace fits me wonderfully. I might use just gay, aro ace, or ace depending on the situation -anon
