It was late, and you were lying in bed, mindlessly scrolling through your phone, trying to tire yourself enough to fall asleep. Ever since you’d been furloughed, this routine had become a familiar escape—a way to fill the silence that echoed through your empty apartment. Living alone had always been a comfort to you, but recently, the isolation had taken on an unsettling edge.

As you flicked through your phone’s gallery, your thumb paused over a photo that didn’t belong there. It was a picture of you, but not just any picture—it was a photo of you sleeping.

Your heart skipped a beat as you stared at it. There you were, lying in the same bed, under the same blankets, with your hair falling across your pillow just as it was now. The dim lighting in the photo perfectly matched the soft glow of your bedside lamp, which was still on.

But you had no memory of taking this picture. And why would you? You were clearly fast asleep in it.

A chill ran down your spine as you tried to rationalize it. Could it have been a prank? Maybe someone had used your phone without you knowing. But no, that didn’t make sense—you hadn’t had anyone over in weeks, not since the furlough began. You’d been isolating, keeping to yourself.

You tapped the photo to check its details. The timestamp showed it had been taken just after midnight, about half an hour ago. But you had been asleep then, exhausted from another monotonous day.

Your thoughts raced as the reality set in. Someone—or something—had taken this photo while you were asleep, and you had no idea they were even there. They had been in your room, standing right beside your bed.

Suddenly, your phone vibrated with a new notification. The sound made you jump, your pulse hammering in your ears. With trembling hands, you opened it, dreading what you might find.

It was another picture, this time of your back. The angle suggested it was taken from just outside your bedroom door, just a few seconds ago…

A single line of text emerged, accompanied by a heinous sound of ragged breathing on your neck: "Don't turn around..."
