OC Kiss Week Prompt 7: Sloppy
Content warning for alcohol, suggestive themes, mention of animal death, and mention of sex. The final one! This one is from my new story idea with Irina, Briar, and Vortex! Here’s the post for that story! Tagging: @ratracechronicler, @maple-writes, @pen-of-roses, and @drabbleitout!
I kept my ears up as I sipped my drink, glancing down at Briar. She was sitting patiently at my stool, wagging her tail and looking up expectantly at me. I smiled and shook my head before I gave her one of my fries. She was an android version of my dog who had died too young, but she was almost exactly like her and still loved her fries.
There was a little bit of a commotion at the entrance to the bar, and I glanced back and laughed when I saw Vortex walk in. He was an android who was tracking me, sent by the company I had bought Briar from. That company decided for some stupid ass reason that Briar needed to be taken back, and I refused, so they sent Vortex after me. But he had found loopholes so that he didn’t take Briar.
There were people chatting him up aggressively. They knew he was an android by the glow of his eyes, and people were so interested in fucking androids. It was kind of ridiculous how much some people fixated on it.
He focused on the others, and his ears pinned back, and I nodded and stood up, downing the rest of my drink. I walked over to him and took his hand, smiling at the crowd around him. Briar was right next to me, growling a little to get people to back off.
I smiled sweetly at the crowd. “Thanks for the hospitality, guys, but this one’s mine. I paid for him specifically.” I put a hand on his shoulder, and I could feel his eyes drilling into me. “If you’ll excuse us.”
I gently led him away from the crowd and to the dance floor. Briar sat on the edge, watching carefully, and I kept an eye on her. She’d let me know if someone was trying to take her, but still. I couldn’t stand her getting taken.
I went to place his hands properly for the dance, but he had already done so. I blinked, but I didn’t comment, just started on the dance. He looked down at me, still frowning, but his ears weren’t so flattened. “Thank you,” he whispered. And he was good at the dance, not needing any instruction. When had he learned to dance? “But that was sloppy. You could have slipped away while I was distracted. If you keep letting me find you, I will have more trouble finding loopholes in my orders.”
I just grinned at him. “Did I ever say I was a professional hider? I don’t know how to do that. And I’ve gotta eat, right? Anyway, I don’t think I could hide from an android who can basically supernaturally track someone.”
He stared at me, ears perking forward. “It’s not supernatural. I just can observe my surroundings much better than humans can. And I have a good loophole for this time, but please be more careful. They’ll be asking me about why it’s taking so long soon enough. I might not be your tracker much longer.”
“The worst news.” I glanced over at Briar, and I was just reminded of what today was. “I just needed a drink today. Sorry for being obvious.” I pulled back as the song ended, and walked back over to the bar, petting Briar on the way. I ordered another drink and chugged it as Vortex followed me.
He brushed his hand against my shoulder, and I could feel him still watching me. “Rina…”
Wait, what? I turned to him with a frown. “You…you gave me a nickname?”
There was the barest hint of a smile on his lips. “What, you didn’t think I knew what a nickname was? I named myself Vortex, you know.”
I blinked. “I…I didn’t. Why did you choose that name?”
He shrugged. “Honestly, I thought it was an interesting phenomenon, and I liked how it sounded.”
I laughed and nudged him. That was amazing! He named himself even while being told over and over that he was less than a human and didn’t deserve a name. “And you say you’re not a person.”
He blinked. “I’m not.”
I snorted and ordered another drink. The room was starting to spin, but I didn’t want to think about what happened today two years ago. Briar whined and nudged my hand, and I petted her. At least I still had her. “You make decisions and think for yourself and have emotions. You’re a person to me.”
He didn’t say anything, just looked away as I got my drink and took a long drink. “What were you going to say before?”
His voice was quiet when he spoke. “Just that I’m worried about you. You shouldn’t be drinking so much when the company wants your android dog.”
I snorted and drank the rest of my drink. That would be enough to make everything feel a lot nicer and to help me forget what happened. Briar dying in my arms after I paid to make sure that her memories and personality would live on. She had only been alive for five years, and I couldn’t stand watching her slowly suffer and then die, leaving me alone. She had been, and still was, all I had left. Shit. I was supposed to not be thinking about this.
“If I didn’t, I would be completely immobilized today. I don’t think that’s any better.”
He watched me for a little bit, frowning slightly. “Please go wherever you’re staying after this.”
“Haven’t gotten a place yet.” I was slurring my words, but at least I wasn’t thinking about that anymore. Everything seemed a lot nicer, and, damnit, Vortex was looking gorgeous right now.
He stared at me for a bit. “You went to a bar, expecting to get drunk, before you even got a place to stay?” He closed his eyes as I fumbled for his hand.
“Hey, hey. It’s okay. I’ll be fine.” I grinned. “You could keep me warm.”
He opened his eyes again, and I stared at them. His eyes were bright and blue and gorgeous. “No, I can’t.” He sounded very firm, and very much like a spoilsport. “But I will get you a place to stay. Can you walk?”
I stood up triumphantly, just to sway and fall back onto the barstool. Vortex shook his head and scooped me up so he was carrying me bridal style. I snickered at the thought but then looked around and found Briar. He grabbed my bag, whistled for her, and she followed us, wagging her tail.
I played with his suit jacket, unbuttoning part of it and pushing down the shoulder, laughing. He didn’t look at me, just held me steadily. He brought me to a hotel and got a room. The receptionist gave him a pitying look and gave him the key, and he brought me up there. He set me down on the bed and set my bag next to it. He took my shoes off and got the bed ready. He even helped me get tucked into the bed. Briar jumped up on the bed and curled up close to me.
Vortex tried to walk away, but I grabbed his hand and snickered again. “Please stay. I won’t go to sleep unless you cuddle.”
He looked back at me with wide eyes, and he shook his head. “No, Rina. Not in the state you’re in, and I’m not inclined to want to do that anyway. I can stay and guard, but I won’t lie down with you.”
“Awwwwww.” I whined and wiggled a little, but then a blip of a thought pushed through, and I got serious for a second. “Please don’t leave me. You’re the only person I can call a friend,” I mumbled.
He closed his eyes and walked closer. He leaned down and kissed my forehead, and I stared at him as he pulled back. He nodded. “I won’t leave. It might be smarter to just stay with you and keep you and Briar safe anyway. But we can discuss that tomorrow. Please sleep.”
I just nodded, not able to speak as he walked over to the other bed and sat down, staring at the door. Briar grumbled a little and moved even closer to me, and I moved around to get more comfortable. It didn’t take long for me to fall asleep, and I felt the safest I had ever.
