Gimolas head canon and drabbles

So I am writing short little blippy drabbles about Gimli and Legolas. I have several ideas that I'm attempting to flesh out as I read the Lord of The Rings books. I am on Return of The King now. I have finished the Hobbit, The Fellowship (more like the Fuckin-ship, am I right???), and The Two Towers in that order. I plan on reading other works too, as well as, reading the appendix of them. Dear gods there's so much 😅. May write for other ships in the fandom too. IDK yet?????

But, point is got some thoughts about these two. I think this is how they would be together when not having to put up a front for fear of judgement. There's a lot. But, tell me what y'all think?

Legolas

Legolas is a They/them. I always got nonbinary vibes from them. But, I don't think they are aware of it yet until they leave their home to discover their truest self. Yes, I think they will play with drag in varying degrees depending on their mood as well.

I think because of his upbringing in the forest, they have had to push down most of not all vulnerability. Thus, being shoved into a world outside of their father's eyes allows them to be more expressive. Hence, why they make some strange facial expressions and behave awkwardly with others. They are essentially learning to become social in ways that matter rather than continuing superficial socialization that they are accustomed to.

In private, when they think no one is looking they embrace sensitivity. Solitude in their mind is a thing of safety to at their softest. Inside they realize just how loving they are of those around them. They easily weep often in private over a variety of things. Over time they realize they are a very emotional person and a very capable warrior. Learning to balance these qualities has become an interesting struggle for them.

once allowed to be themself I imagine them to be snarky and mischievous in affectionate ways. They may even play pranks on you provided that they love you enough. The chaos is strong with them.

They do have a lot of clueless niece moments too. But, they make up for it via their sweet personality and caring energy.

Once they are married the elven way I think the crave it constantly if you know what I mean 😏. In that same vein I think they discover they are not vanilla too.

Gimli

I definitely agree he is BAMF not a clown.

He had a heart of gold and loyal golden retriever boyfriend energy. I think he would do anything to preserve the happiness of his lover and friends. This may actually cause him problems from time to time. The wrong person may take advantage of his selflessness. (Legolas I think is extremely protective of Gimli because of this.)

Because, of his upbringing I think that duty was placed very heavily on him. So, I think, he probably takes that too far. So far that he let it over take his life. Because of this, I think the journey he goes on will help him understand the purpose of why he carries out his duties. Yes I understand he has friends and family but they all I would think live a similar life of duty as well.

The fellowship, might be a little bit of a wake up call for him. Duty without happiness is quite a hollow way to live.

I also picture him to be a hopeless romantic. He's the type to cheese it up just to make his lovie happy. I think he is also the type to only refer to his lover by name if he wants to be serious. So yes, our boy Gimli gives off heavy affectionate vibes in my opinion. Despite popular beliefs that dwarves are rowdy, sweaty, and vulgar all the time; I think Gimli cleans up damn good on his own accord for his lover. He's secretly a perfect gentleman.

Fundamentally I believe that writing about the rich and varied human existence is so important, and authors who do this end up seeming prescient in ways that naive analysis often rejects.

Two examples. First; a lot of people ship Frodo/Sam or Legolas/Gimli (or more obscure gay ships like Maedhros/Fingon), and some people say stuff like “well, Tolkien was catholic, he clearly didn’t intend for these characters to be gay.” But Tolkien himself says that he doesn’t write Christian allegory, in fact he despises all allegory. What he does is write about the rich and varied human existence, and when he did so he drew on the experiences of the likely closeted gay and bisexual men he had met over his life! And he synthesized this as just a way people behave, not as ‘representation’ but reality. And we can recognize that while in the early twentieth century, the 15% of people that identify as bisexual in the current generation (gen Z) would likely have married people of the opposite gender, that doesn’t mean they didn’t have same-gender relationships that had romantic elements even if they were never consummated.

A second example; in Tamora Pierce’s the Song of the Lioness Quartet, Alanna, the main character, dresses as a boy and trains to be a knight. As she grows up, she has to re-learn to connect with her femininity in secret with the few people who know who she is (thus making her a paradoxically-apt role model for both trans men and trans women, depending on which parts of the narrative one projects oneself onto). But Alanna never feels truly comfortable as a woman, either, and constantly has to assert both her masculinity and femininity to different people once she becomes a knight and reveals the secret. Tamora Pierce has since stated that if Alanna were born in the modern day, she would likely identify as genderfluid. But these books were written in the 1980s, and while there were people in that time period who were exploring the language of nonbinary and genderfluid identities, it wasn’t really a widespread notion, and while I can’t be sure Tamora Pierce didn’t encounter that language I sort of doubt Alanna was intended from the beginning to fit that identity. Instead, Pierce wrote a character based on the people she knew in life, who perhaps uncomfortably chafed at their assigned gender, and wrote a character who really believably would be genderfluid today, despite (plausibly) not knowing what ‘genderfluid’ was!

And I think that’s beautiful. There’s not really a point to this but just to highlight a perspective in literary analysis that you can lose if you focus too much on the biographical details of the author.

hi, yes i have but it's been a while since i last talked about it! i've been meaning to write a long essay on my issues for a while but it would require actually playing the game and i don't want to do that. here's a long rant that got away from me though:

i've complained sometimes about various stereotypes or missteps in the way specific trans characters are represented, but i'd be able to ignore that if it weren't for my main issue, which is that trans characters just aren't properly woven into the world, leaving them feeling alienated in a way queer characters in previous games never were.

it's very clear that the writers haven't broken down their own perceptions of gender and the various cultures surrounding it enough to say something insightful, which is fine because most people haven't, but when people defend the game on the sole basis that its depiction of transness is revolutionary i do have to take some issue. there are books from the 60s that take a more interesting approach to deconstructing gender lol. veilguard may feel progressive in the landscape of aaa video games but i don't think that means it should pass without critique and i don't think that we should have to settle for this when it's possible to do so much better.

the easiest and most frequently discussed example of not properly incorporating transness into thedas is the use of language in the game. you've probably seen the endless arguments about whether taash calling themself nonbinary is an anachronism, and though i'm sure some of the arguments are in bad faith i think people overestimate how many people (on here specifically) are arguing from that perspective. it's been extremely frustrating to be called transphobic by cis people over this when i'm coming at it from the perspective of someone who has actually studied shit like this.

this is a problem throughout the game but it's easier to examine codex entries for this post than go through entire scenes. i've talked about hating the language in this codex entry before, but it really annoys me so let me complain about it again lol.

acknowleding that trans as a prefix means "change" is actually a good start here and if wasn't for how this codex entry continues i'd just shrug and move on, but i really hate the absolutist way it uses the very modern "affirming" and "was always" narrative and language as though it's universally agreed upon. you can argue that this is subjective and what taash was told (though which shadow dragon is talking to them like a GIC psychologist lol?), but when the entire codex entry feels like an educational pamphlet for clueless cis people it just comes across as very odd.

and then the rest of the codex entry just abandons any attempt at making the words "work" etymologically and gives extremely bare-bones descriptions of them. some of these words are younger than me, i saw them being coined on various forums and corners of the internet. is it representation if you say the word and put absolutely no effort into representing or even discussing the agender/bigender/demigender/others experience? in another post i compared this to being like if they did a lord of the rings remake and confirmed legolas as being bisexual by making him wear a bi flag pin with no extra context - of course people TODAY use that flag to signal their experience with bisexuality and there's nothing wrong with that, but to link modern language/signals with an experience that has clearly existed since before either of those things were invented comes right back around to being oddly invalidating, as though these experiences wouldn't exist without modern english speaking understanding of them.

as for the argument about whether or not it's anachronistic: i don't personally think you need to adhere to a binary of modern / historically accurate language and culture to make queerness work in a medieval-ish fantasy setting. the previous games (for all their faults) managed a pretty established status quo where they didn't aim to portray a utopia with a widespread queer culture while also not being gratuitous with their homophobia. and as much as queer x-topias can be interesting when done well, i think this is a good thing for a big budget fantasy game - unless you're EXTREMELY in the know about gender roles and queer theory etc, how can you hope to portray a queer utopia? some people write books whose sole point is to portray a world without gender roles or homophobia and they still misstep, i don't think it's the casual inclusive background thing a lot of fantasy authors believe it to be. it would have gone the same way as origins' claim that men and women are treated the same; maybe you make queer people hold hands in the street without being questioned and nobody makes negative comments about your romance option, but do you subconsciously assign gender roles to jobs? do you portray the majority of npcs adhering to western cishet gender norms? what is the ratio of monogamous f/m relationships portrayed compared to other relationships? these are all things people just straight up don't think about when designing a world and they will accidentally create a society that is welcoming of queerness in THEORY while actually replicating our own cishet patriarchal values.

i don't think veilguard is attempting to be a utopia, i don't think it's attempting to be anything but a finished game, but i see people defending it on the BASIS of it being a utopia fairly often.

taash's arc is another pretty big example of this struggle to examine gender in real life beyond the writers' experiences, namely white canadian. it's a deeply racist attempt at a multucultural narrative where one culture (which has already been demonised throughout the series, including in veilguard) is portrayed as less welcoming of queer people while the other culture, which is still a society with binary gender roles despite being a matriarchy, is portrayed as being instantly and unquestionably accepting.

there's a LOT of potential in an arc for a character like taash if they'd been written by someone with actual interest (and probably experience) writing about the queer experience of existing within two very different cultures. the qunari ARE a culture who are fairly big on binaries but they have an established acceptance of transition that would make their understanding of gender fairly fluid, meanwhile the lords of fortune seem ideal on the surface but human/(our) culture has so many hidden binaries that you don't notice in everyday life unless you're the one being alienated by them.

this could have been a chance to slightly turn the racist Othering of the qunari on its head by showing our own society from the perspective of perhaps some aqun-athlok characters taash befriends, a codex entry about an aqun-athlok character from the past that taash finds and takes inspiration from (maybe they start out aqun-athlok then reject the gender binary entirely?), or even from shathann, perhaps as a character who has explored her gender in the past or decides to explore it as a result of taash. (imagine if shathann was actually aqun-athlok herself, having adopted taash, and some of her complicated feelings about the qun involved the fact that her identity was more accepted there. just SOMETHING to balance the scales a little.)

then again, not even rivain gets to be the fully "progressive" society and taash has to go to the shadow dragons for their gender education. i think it's funny that someone seemed to be projecting an ultra-progressive modern activist group image onto the shadow dragons, i think i've said before that they remind me of all the modern au fanfiction about les amis from les mis that i used to read as a teenager, when they're supposed to be a ruthless abolitionist group. i think this choice was largely to facilitate interaction between the factions but it does feel a little odd given the other racist elements in taash's arc.

there's also the issue of the actual topic of medical transition being avoided. we have tarquin and mae, two characters who have seemingly undergone some kind of medical transition. we have top surgery scars in cc. but there's no discussion of how this transition happens - is hrt magical as krem suggests and is that the only option? is surgery affordable? do different countries and cultures have different levels of advancement in medical transition? these are things i'd want to see written about in codex entries, not lists of various identities that anyone can find by googling a list of genders.

i'm a little disquieted by the avoidance of medical transition given everything happening irl, but it's maybe the issue i understand the thought process behind the most. it feels like a very safe attempt at not veering too far into what happened with krem / the decades of weird fascination with trans bodies. my feelings on this entirely hinge on whether or not the dragon king does actually have top surgery scars lol, for my sanity i'll say he doesn't.

anyway, this all sucks because i've seen SO many fans do better for casual oc posting or fanfic. i've seen so many amazing ways trans culture and hrt and surgery could work in thedas and it's depressing that the writers couldn't even attempt to do something interesting with it. i know there was a lot of crunch that impacted the quality of the writing but i do also think some of these issues would have persisted if they'd had all the time in the world.

So I got board and discovered what the nyx virtual try on was made for

my god... I feel like Legolas is the type for makeup though. Especially for dates with Gimli.

Head canon- Legolas is definitely a they/them. And they have no problem embracing their fem side. Which I think is a wide range, from just wearing a little make up to full drag???? I think it depends on the occasion. But, no matter the situation, they own it, doesn't give a damn and will be a badass while dragging too!

a napokban visszaolvastam egy régebbi írásomat (amit to date a legjobb alkotásomnak tartok) és elgondolkodtam, hogy a főszereplőim default neme mindig férfi volt, és egy darabig baszogattam magam ezért, hogy ez is biztos a sosem múló internalizált nőgyűlölet újabb formája, de aztán rájöttem, hogy sokkal inkább azért, mert azt semlegesebbnek érzem, mint a she-t, és ezáltal közelebb magamhoz. én mindig az a gyerek/felnőtt voltam, aki sosem nem vagy kinézet alapján kapcsolódott karakterekhez, hanem belső tulajdonságok alapján (nekem pl ezért nem tűnt fel soha a gyűrűk urában hogy mennyire nincsenek nők, mert samuval azonosultam és frodóba voltam szerelmes, és se arwen se eowyn se galadriel (jó mondjuk felnőttként galadriel eléggé beütött de csakis cate blanchett!!) nem érintett meg, de ugyanannyira nem érintett meg aragorn se vagy legolas). szóval ha nagyon akarom, mondhatom hogy van abban szexizmus, hogy a férfi főszereplő a semleges blank slate default, de az is lehet, hogy azért éreztem közelebb magamhoz, mert a nőiséggel mindig is hadilábon álltam gyerekkorom óta, pedig szerettem babázni meg barbie-zni is meg, meg anyám ruháiba öltözni, szóval nem volt hiány kislányos activitykből, meg mellette szerettem focizni meg kardozni meg játékkatonákkal játszani, szóval egy nagyon teljeskörű gyerekkori élményem volt.

arra emlékszem, hogy mindig is szerettem, amikor rövid volt a hajam, vagy ha fiúnak néztek (előfordult párszor), és persze felnőtt életem megkeserítőit, a melleimet mindig is utáltam. nem azért mert ne lennének tök normális mellek, hanem mert ott voltak és elviselhetetlenül zavartak. az utóbbi pár évben fogytam és azóta kisebbek és jobban is érzem magam velük, meg már így beletörődtem, de húszas éveim körül nagyon-nagyon gondolkodtam egy top surgeryn. de nem azért, mert férfi akarnék lenni, sosem akartam az se lenni, csak nőnek sem éreztem magam igazán soha. mikor a barátnőimre néztem, mindig láttam bennük valami olyan nőies bájt, valami mélyről fakadó dolgot, amit magamban soha nem éreztem. egy időben próbáltam nőiesebben öltözködni, ilyen fake it till you make it alapon, de mindig úgy éreztem magam, mint aki jelmezben van. mostanra kitapasztaltam, hogy miben érzem komfortosan magam és olyan szempontból szeretek nő lenni, hogy sokkal szabadabban fejezhetem ki magam külsőségeket tekintve retaliáció nélkül mint a férfiak. festhetem a hajam, körm��m, arcom, hordhatok nadrágot vagy szoknyát is, szóval nagyobb mozgásterem van és ez tök fontos nekem. szóval próbáltam én mindenféle dolgokat, amiket nőcis nőkön láttam, de magamon mindig úgy éreztem, mintha cosplayelnék és mindenki átlát rajtam, mert olyat próbálok magamra hazudni, ami nincs is ott.

és az utóbbi években én is beleszopódtam ezekbe a body type-os rabbit hole-okba, gondolván hátha ez lesz a válasz végre a problémámra, de pár hónapja jutottam arra, hogy azok is csak egyfajta kifejezésmódot támogatnak és szarom én le inkább az egészet, mert nem önazonos. szóval kidobtam az egészet az ablakon és visszatértem ahhoz, ami inherently kényelmes és önazonos számomra és azt hiszem, most már confidently kijelenthetem, hogy nonbinary vagyok. mikor én nőttem felfelé, ez a kifejezés meg label nem létezett még, vagy ha igen, hozzám nem jutott el huszonpár éves koromig, de mindig is éreztem és tudtam, csak megfelelő szavam nem volt rá.

ehhez is kellett bazmeg vagy nyolc év tipródás meg próbálkozás ide-oda, és akkor arról még nem is beszéltem, hogy a testemmel való kapcsolatom milyen borzalmas volt világéletemben (jórészt ennek is köszönhetően) mert hát nekem mindig a semleges alkat tetszett (volna magamon), de édesanyám testalkatát (meg az evéshez kapcsolódó hozzáállását) örökölve nem ezt kaptam, és egy életen átívelő evészavaros viselkedés született ebből mert mindig akkor éreztem magam jobban a bőrömben, közelebb ahhoz a képhez ami bennem élt magamról, mikor vékonyabb voltam, de ez egy whole other can of worms, én meg az étel kapcsolata.
