This ideology is not and has never been common place, it is a willful misconception to believe otherwise. The traditionalist have argued for millennia that they own their workers as slaves/serfs, as property. Workers have never been treated like people.

I have been talking with Mahmoud (@mahmoudfamily1) and he is really worried about his family. There has been continuous attacks on Nuseirat, where his 17 family members (including 10 children and a 2-year-old baby!) are staying. Just a few hours ago, an air strike in Nuseirat has killed 6 children and their parents! A lot of the casualties coming out of Gaza are children, and I'm really worried about these 10 little children at Nuseirat.

Moreover, their tent has just been bombed, destroying everything they have and leaving these 17 people with nowhere to sleep. Basic necessities are 300% more expensive than usual. With such astronomical price and little funds, they do not have most daily necessities. How are they going to cope with the coming winter? With no shelter to shield them from the rapidly dropping temperature and the heavy rain, with no clothes to keep them warm, and with little food and clean water too!

They don't see us as real people who will be really affected. But we have already been dealing with this misgendering, exclusion and erasure for DECADES since the original Equality Act came out. To get rights we have to misgender ourselves or allow ourselves to be systemically erased. We are forced onto wards, into spaces we aren't supposed to be in. We are excluded otherwise, and this amendment will make it legally possible to fully exclude non-binary people from any spaces. We have been fighting to be legally recognised, petition after petition, PMQ after PMQ, writing to MP after MP just to be RECOGNISED AS PEOPLE and it has never caught traction, or we are told no. Barely any nonbinary charities even exist, let alone any trans charity that actually has a genuine focus for nonbinary people and resolving our legal invisibility.

Only in January was a non-binary person who emigrated to the UK denied the right to be legally nonbinary here despite them being able to in the USA. That should have made waves! But you never hear about these things because they happen to enben. It is like we don't matter. It's blatant binary supremacism. It is disgusting.

the nonbinary erasure in the discussions about the UK supreme court decision is deeply concerning and once again shows me that too many transgender people and our supposed allies only truly care about transgender women and men.

Do you ever notice how the majority of nonbinary characters are just straight up not human beings? The majority of our non-binary rep is inhuman, which shows how binary society still views us as a literal societal impossibility despite us being here, real people, on earth with them.

I feel like this feeds into the whole thing of enben being seen as like "eldritch horrors" or "other worldly." Even though it might be claimed to be only in jest, it still displays how we are implicitly seen as a human impossibility because of the pervasiveness of the gender binary in society. It's taught to us as "natural" and how "humans have always functioned" despite our modern bourgeois, patriarchal, white-supremacist gender binary originating as a tool of colonialism. That was very recent in anthropological history. (Also note how capitalism is intertwined with binary supremacy here.)

When you delve into this it's wild. It starts surface level but it reveals the core exorsexism and classism of the capitalist society for one, but how it permeates into jokes ("I can identify as an attack helicopter!" "Nonbinary people are little frogs/eldritch beings!"), representation (most nonbinary representation is of inhuman characters) and our legal status (inexistent, which means no civil rights or legal protection of any kind.)

What is radical feminism?

Radical feminism emerged during the second wave of feminism, in opposition to liberal and Marxist feminism. Liberal feminists demanded equal rights for women without consideration of the broader social structures that oppress women. Marxist feminists linked women's oppression to capitalism, and therefore considered dismantling capitalism the key to achieving women's liberation. Radical feminists, on the other hand, looked beyond legal and economic systems and instead considered patriarchy as the system under which women are oppressed. (Note: the distinction between radical and Marxist feminism is not as clear cut today as it used to be, since radical feminism borrows some analyses from Marxism, and Marxist feminists also acknowledge the existence of the patriarchy.)

What is the patriarchy? Where does it come from?

The patriarchy is the system of social organization that grants men social, economic and political power over women, enabling women's subjugation. There are several theories on its origins. Marxist feminists might point to Engel's analysis of women's oppression, whereas radfems might look to Firestone's analysis in The Dialectic of Sex, for starters.

Are radical feminists transphobic?

Since radical feminist belief in the existence of patriarchy relies on the notion of two sexes, one of which acts as the oppressor sex, radical feminism lies at odds with modern gender ideology which dictates that sex is mutable. The notion that a person can identify in and out of their sex - and by extension in and out of their oppression - renders patriarchal oppression a meaningless concept. Whether or not this constitutes transphobia is up to you.

What is a TERF?

TERF stands for trans exclusionary radical feminist. TERF is a misnomer, really - radical feminists include anyone observed female at birth in their feminism, including trans and nonbinary identified females.

Is radical feminism white feminism?

Not at all. While feminists in the global south may not self identify as radical feminists, radical feminism is the branch of western feminism most closely aligned to the struggles of women outside the west. Radical feminists focus on issues such as sex trafficking, male violence and female socialization for instance, all of which are more likely to be experienced by racialized women. Moreover, the analysis of gender relations through the framework of patriarchy is applicable to women everywhere in the world. Liberal feminism lacks such an analysis.
