thinking about how much of the perception of gender feels like a performance. wondering what it means to be a man once you strip away biological essentialism and the performance of masculinity.
maybe i would be less dysphoric if i put more effort into my performance. thinking about the idea of it "coming naturally" like men and women "naturally" behave differently and how that maps on to how people perceive trans people. or what it means to "feel" like a man or a woman to others, as if that isn't intimately connected to cultural gender preformance. or that your ability to master said performance proves something innate about you.
thinking about being autistic and having to learn a new script whole cloth when i barely (read: not at all) managed the first one, wondering if this one would come more naturally if i let it, and if it doesn't what does that mean.
thinking about the performance of gender as a different culture, like learning a new dialect. idk

of genderswapped sam and dean. who has the short haircut.
THE REAL QUESTION. i could see a case for either. short hair is probably more convenient for hunting after all....
i think dean wears her hair long as a kid because it reminds john of mary. you could make the case that he'd cut her hair because it reminds him of mary too much, but i can't see it really, i think he'd want to preserve the innocence he sees in girlhood that he doesnt seem to in boyhood (a la that whole journal entry about wishing he had girls and how sons have to be soliders). continuing that, i cant actually really see her cutting her hair short at all because it ties her to her mother in her eyes. i think girl dean is like so obsessed with mary. can you imagine like. her whole life is about avenging mary and she's her daughter and the only girl in the family now. she has no adult female role models except her dead mother. she plays into being john (still loves cars and classic rock and wears flannel and leather jackets and is generally 'masculine') but she still sees herself as mary. john sees her as mary too even though he expects her to act exactly like him also. so i think she keeps her hair long. she probably has childhood memories of mary brushing it and wants to hold onto them. i think she likes it long, and i think john likes it long, and i think it reminds them both of mary, and i think they both like that.
sam? well sam is a lot less invested in playing the Role that's expected of him, so. girl sam is victim to levels of misogyny previously unthought of especially in the way where both john and dean see her as soooo weak and little and in need of protection. and they probably rely on the girl thing a lot to infantilise her. so i can totally see her cutting her hair off in a Fuck You to john at some point. tbh i reckon girl sam would have hair like canon sam's later season hair. though rly i can see anything with sam. also i feel like she'd have grown up with a shortish bob because it's easier maintenance (for dean john winchester is NOT bothered with looking after sams hair <3)
also both of those answers are in an au where one of them's raised a girl and the other isn't. but if we're talking total femchesters? john having two daughters? need to think on this more but im still leaning towards sam. i think girl dean commits to being a Girl the same way canon dean commits to being a Guy, even though both of them are shrouded in the same machismo. but sam fights any role hes given
tldr: sam

Thanks for the updates! I don’t want to spread misinformation so I’ll go ahead and delete the post.
I'm glad to help.
I do think playing with the possibilities of reincarnation is a lot of fun mind you, I play with it in my fics too. It just doesn't have much mythological support lol. There may be some philosophical support of course, but I'm not the *most* educated on all the various philosophers of Ancient Greece, haven't made them a focus yet beyond what I studied in rhetoric.
I do wanna talk to your professor sometime cause I'm wondering what his sources are for the Achilles stuff and Thetis mythology. I know the Metis myth fits what he claims of Thetis but no source I've read on Thetis mentions the prophecy the way he mentioned it.
Anyways, I do hope you have fun with your fic idea? I mean, idk if you plan to write it lol but if you do that would be an interesting play. I do enjoy playing with reincarnation (my fav is Pallas reincarnating as Percy).

been thinkin about bipolar lately. lots of things, as always, but mostly about how people will far sooner extend grace and understanding and support to depression-spectrum symptoms than mania-spectrum symptoms.
like, with depression, people seem more willing/able to understand that it can cause people to become withdrawn, demotivated, and detached, especially when that is out of character for a person.
but with mania, people seem much less willing/able to understand that it can cause people to become angry, impulsive, and risk-taking, even when that is out of character for a person.
people have always been more forgiving about my depression behaviours than my mania behaviours, even when my mania behaviours were comparatively mild in their effects on the people around me, and the depression behaviours comparatively severe in their effects on the people around me.
it also appears to have little to do with the awareness level of the person experiencing the altered mood state -- i maintain awareness during both depression and mania, and i essentially always have. and when i explain that i know i am depressed but that doesn't make it any easier to manage my symptoms, i am generally met with kindness and understanding. but when i explain that i know i am manic but that doesn't make it any easier to manage my symptoms, i am generally met with vitriol and blame.
anyways. this is getting long. i just find it weird that people generally understand that depression is a thing happening to a person that is separate from who they are, and yet view mania as revealing fundamental truths about who someone is. maybe it comes down to depression being viewed as an illness and mania as a choice or something? im not sure. but i think its a bad and inaccurate belief that can cause a lot of harm, whatever the cause is.

Question for the RK AU, if that's alright? Bit of a loaded question but I'm curious. How did the gang get together?
Ok welcome back dearies i wasnt dead i was wandering my head around this ask.
Its been some time i dont write coherently i made some notes but here it is:
Illaoi's mother and Pyke's parents attended the same church since they were kids hence why they know each other, althrough Pyke grew to reject the religion Illaoi is still very passionate about it, they both attended the same school as kids. Abigail knew Illaoi's mother and so Sarah and Illaoi became friends in the sense of 'that one kid we play with at the park while moms are having their coffee'.
At the same time both Illaoi's mother was aware of Abigail's relation with Gangplank's family was troublesome. Pyke wouldnt tag alone to Illaoi and Sarah playdate at the park until his mother gave permission for him to go always accompanied by Illaoi's mom. Making them a 'trio' of funny kids but it was rare ocassions Pyke was allowed to tag along.
In the meantime Braum doesnt live on the same city but in a village close by the mountains around 4-5 hours of car far from the main city. Lives with his family and there's not really much educational opportunities, to wich parting to the city was an idea Braum developed early on his early teenhood age.
Yasuo lives with his mum, dealing with the passing of his father figure (something he will later relate to Sarah's pain). His relation with his brother Yone slowly withered by the pass of time and as the new reality of single parenting and death of a loved one settled, they dont interact much now despite living under the same roof, althrough Yasuo has good relationship with his mother.
Yasuo and Ahri (and thecnically Yone too) met on the conservatory where their parents enrolled the kids when they were young. Ahri is an adopted child who lives on the outskirt of the city in a more privileged household. There she learned to play violin, while Yasuo learned to play the flute, they technically know each other since they're kids but never really spoke, just Ahri ocasionally waving at both brothers and Yasuo responding back with a waving of his own, a small crush he started to feel during those ages he tried to supress.
After highschool they all enrolled to the same school for baccalaureate (...thats what word reference says, but im unsure if thats understandable. Basically after highschool where you pick either art/science/humanities to then go to the university or other more complex studies).
Wich made Braum finally move in the city by renting a flat alongside other students in the city. After Abigail's death, Sarah lives by herself under the roof of a students residence. Illaoi still lives with her mom and her mom's partner. Ahri can come by car first driven by her parents and eventually by herself once she gets her liscence. Yasuo remains the same aswell as Illaoi. Pyke decides to leave his parent's home for independence, a hard decision that made him work part time while also doing his studies and renting a flat with the little money he makes.
By the time school year starts Sarah and Illaoi already know each other, alongside with Pyke to wich they catch up on all the stuff that has been going on. Yasuo stumbled upon Ahri on the same classroom, and decided to sit together to be comfortable around the new students, althrough this made Yasuo's crush develop even more. Braum, despite not knowing anyone, remained cheerful and kind.
They all coincide on the same classrooms in general subjects. On specific subjects Sarah wants to study any branch related to politics, to wich she chose humanities subjects, wich made her stumble upon Braum, who also chose the same subjects for him to study child education. Althrough his personality seemed to crash to Sarah still mourning soul, he actually manages to crack a smile on Sarah, enjoying to have him around and as a support for these subjects while everyone is on other branches. After the firsts days of classes she presents Braum to both Pyke and Illaoi and accepted him as part of the group.
The others decided to go for science focused subjects to study different branches after it. Pyke goes for marine biology as Illaoi decides for personal training studies (like P.E. teacher/gym trainer etc), sitting together. Curious about the oddly shaped bags Yasuo and Ahri carries around for conservatory after class, Illaoi asks what instruments they play. Marbeled by the music Illaoi grew fond of the pair of students, while Yasuo's unability to pick what to study and his lazy personality struck a cord on Pyke, wich also made them to group in, while Ahri is interested in studying psychology. Eventually the group consolidated as now they sit togehter on the general subjects, Yasuo's love for alcohol made Sarah quickly friend him, aswell as Ahri cheeky but sweet personality made everyone quickly accept her to the group aswell.
Is this a school/highschool/university/whatever AU? yes and no. Althrough school is a good chunk of it i dont want to focus entirely on it. They have silly shenanigans inside and outside the school and i dont want the school to be the only escenario, althrough its the place the group consolidated.
