You know what just really gets me about Beatrice's reaction to the kiss?
It wasn't just that she was dealing with internalized homophobia and the fear of losing Ava throughout the entire season. As far as she knew, this girl was straight!
To find out that Ava didn't just think of her as a best friend, but loved her the same way that Bea loved her ... Beatrice was not prepared.
If Ava didn't make the first move, I don't know that Bea would've been able to tell her how she felt. She was so scared. She needed that confirmation to let go: to kiss Ava back and know that it was okay, that she was loved, that Ava loved her.
She could finally just be and bask in the love she had denied herself for so long. Caress the face of that beautiful girl who set her heart and soul free.
I will never not be over these two.

I just realized that Beatrice is one of the first few people Ava has ever hugged since her childhood.
After Diego, Beatrice was the second person Ava hugged since she was paralyzed, since being dead, since being resurrected.
Tumblr media
Ava has been bed-ridden and paralyzed for majority of her life. And she didn’t have any feeling in her body as well. I doubt any of the nuns that took care of her gave her a hug. So I think this is a big thing that Ava would reach out to Beatrice for physical comfort in this moment. At that time, Ava had like one conversation with Bea and she trusts her enough to hug her (and even touch her face) .
Tumblr media
Ava is quite literally touch-starved. So it makes sense that she would reach out and hug or touch Beatrice when she can. Especially after getting even closer to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this makes all of Ava’s physical interactions even more special. I also noticed that she’s the one who usually makes the first move in these interactions.
Not only was Ava deprived from hugs, but also kisses. Or generally any physical form of affection. I’d assume that Ava only saw these kinds of things on TV and imagined if she could do it for herself someday.
And she did.

Kissing on the cheek, to kissing on the lips, to kissing on the forehead.
Bea may not be Ava’s first kiss or her first hug but she was the one that really mattered.

in defense of my own happiness [12/18]
pairing: ava/beatrice summary: You let yourself be led from the car into Jillian’s villa, from the front door to a conference room with the remaining Sisters, where you sit down in a chair and try to stop yourself from counting everyone in the room. There are fewer people here than there should be, for many reasons. // or: beatrice (and later, ava) in the aftermath of season two
previously
//
Ava’s third door comes easier than the first two. She still doesn’t step through it right away.
She had puzzled for a moment over where to focus her energy—there are too many things she doesn’t know about the Earth as it exists at the moment. Certainly any building that she might have walked in is long-gone; maybe even the concept of Spain doesn’t exist anymore. She doesn’t know how to pinpoint a planet she’s no longer familiar with, let alone any singular location upon it.
But she remembers how it felt to be alive—more than almost anything else from her short stint as the Warrior Nun, Ava remembers that; the enveloping, overwhelming muchness of being alive. She closes her eyes and thinks of the beach, the scorch of sand beneath her feet during the day or the soothing chill it offered at night. She takes a deep breath and remembers the tangy smell of saltwater, breathes again and contrasts it with the refreshing crisp of their lake in Switzerland. It was everyone’s lake first, but it was their lake then, and it will be their lake every time they visit it after. Ava takes a moment just to imagine that—a summer day with Beatrice floating in the water and Ava running on top of the surface around her, flicking her cheeks with droplets every so often just to remind Beatrice, who certainly hasn’t forgotten, that she’s still there.
She lets that linger before she returns to the task at hand.

The more I watch 1x08 the more I realize how important the entire episode is in Ava's transition and the arc season 2 takes. To start prior to this episode I think to a degree Ava feels some kind of connection with Beatrice (especially given the halo exploding scene. Yes no one else was directly at risk by this point but we also never see Ava react that way unless Beatrice is in the line of fire even in s2). Anyways through the course of the training it's obvious that there's a degree of familiarity and comfort that's shared between them that's different than either girl's relationship with the others. Other than Mary Ava hasn't actually spent all that much time with the group. Cut to the "What you are is beautiful" scene. We see Ava for the first time genuinely apologetic (despite not really doing anything wrong) and we see her respond to Beatrice's confession with care and consideration and almost in a way a confession of her own.
I've rewritten this like ten times because there's so much about this episode that I find important but cut to the end and the scene that really hammers in the arc we see in season 2. We see Ava wake up having just had a nightmare where Shannon basically told her all warrior nuns die quickly and the mission has basically killed the family she found much like Ava and it's enough for Ava to say fuck the mission I only care about keeping the halo from having to pass to one of you (cue the whole who's next after me you scene). This is the first time that we see Ava not only accept the mission but actively driving towards a specific outcome as she transitions from "survival at any cost" to "I refuse to watch you die". The fact that we see in the same scene where Ava promises to be the last warrior nun Beatrice begging Ava to let her help her absolutely panicked at Ava's sudden breakdown just fits the narrative so well. I think Ava had already decided at this point it was always going to be her if Beatrice's life was on the line and it's fucking me up.

“I’ve missed you,” Character B murmurs, holding Character A closer to them, a soft noise of appreciation slipping from Character A’s mouth as they lean into Character B’s warm embrace.
“I’ve missed you...” Character B groans, hips thrusting into Character A’s as Character A lets out a soft whimper at the sensation of Character B slowly filling them up to the brim. “So fucking much, you don’t even know,” Character B breathes out, dipping their head down a little and resting their forehead against Character A’s.
“Mmm,” Character A murmurs, clenching around Character B on purpose, enjoying the soft gasp slipping out of Character B’s mouth. “I’ve missed you, too,” Character A says softly, hand wrapping around the nape of Character B’s neck. “I’ve missed this, too,” Character A says, pulling them down for a long awaited kiss.

“Again.”
Ava groans and slumps against the wall, her sweaty back sliding down until she’s sitting with her legs stretched out in front of her. Her ankles are throbbing–every part of her is throbbing—and the wall, though it’s cool to the touch, provides no relief.
“I don’t understand how to do what you want,” she huffs out.
“Then I must reiterate what I want, because if you understood that, you would be able to do it without thought.”
“Getting a lot of mixed messages from the person who just told me that I was never meant to have the Halo and can never tap into its true powers.”
Reya cocks their head. “Your distillation is an exaggeration, though not as much as it could have been.” Ava resists the urge to pump her fist. “I am helping you now because you are my only path to victory.”
“Yester—” Ava shakes her head, adjusting her perception of time. “Previously you said I was your best hope. Now you’re saying I’m the only one.”
They both wait—Reya, for clarification; Ava, for a way out.
“There’s a lot of pressure in that distinction,” Ava continues, when it becomes clear Reya has nothing to offer.
“I see no distinction,” Reya replies. “The best choice is ever the only choice.”
“You can’t have gotten to where you are now because you only ever made the best choices,” Ava protests.
“All of my choices got me to where I am. They were the best ones.” They flick their fingers, and the stone at Ava’s back juts out and shoves her forward. “Get up, there is work to do.”

what do you think beatrice and ava's love languages are? (both how they prefer to receive and express love)
Okay so I go back and forth quite a bit on this because I think that the answer is a blend of physical touch and words of affirmation for them both. I think for Beatrice in terms of preferred love language to receive physical touch is important, so much of the show revolves around Beatrice reassuring herself through contact with Ava (Obviously also for Ava's benefit but I think a lot of it is for herself). Obviously this also ties into how she expresses love but I think that words of affirmation comes into play more with her expression of love. Think of the times she makes a point to tell Ava that she trusts her, that she's there, or specifically the scene where she talks Ava through the wall.
Ava on the other hand is similar. I think in terms of how she expresses it physical touch is more prominent, and I think some of that has to do with the fact that Ava utilizes a lot of sarcasm and humor in how she communicates and that isn't always necessarily beneficial to expressing her affection to Beatrice. In terms of receiving I think with Ava the balance is more even in wanting to receive love through physical touch and words of affirmation. Ava has spent a lot of time being told that she's useless or that she's a burden plus one of the first people to take an interest in her was abusing her trust for his own gain and I think while we didn't get to see if Beatrice spent a lot of the 2 months rebuilding Ava's sense of self-worth and confidence. That said as someone who spent a lot of time not being able to feel anything I think physical touch is obviously important to her as well.
Ultimately I think one of the reasons they work so well is they both share the same forms of preferred love languages and I think because of how in sync they are they know which the other needs in that moment.
