Working book cover, not final so please no criticism because its subject to change!! This will probably be on AO3 and not actually physically published save for some posterity copies for close friends, but I’d like to share it anywho.

If you’re interested in a Peter Pan continuation with medium/low fantasy, an early 1920s vibe, historical references, magic vs modernity, some OCs, a dual narrative that switches between grown-up Wendy and her daughter Jane, family dynamics and drama, plus a dark take on what would happen to Neverland if the children stopped believing, maybe this is for you!

(This is not Evil Peter!!! Peter is treated neutrally!!)

London, 1919. The Neverland is out looking for you, but grown-ups can’t fly.

It’s been such a long time since the adventure.

The Lost Boys are all married men, who fought wars instead of pirates.

Wendy Darling is a real mother, with a moody daughter who longs for a change of scenery.

Children don’t believe in fairies all too much anymore.

Peter Pan is lonely, and things are changing in Neverland, so he decides to pay his former friends a visit. Taking Wendy’s daughter Jane and her cousin to see what the island has now become, it becomes clear that no one can escape their childhoods, no matter how long ago.

This is a complete reboot of a series I started when I was younger (SMQ) so if the plot sounds familiar that’s why. This is NOT SMQ and has little to nothing in common with the old SMQ stories.

So I doubt I’ll ever fully flesh this out as a storyline, but it has occurred to me that despite dealing pretty heavily with themes of Time and aging, I don’t think I’ve ever read or watched a Peter Pan retelling that has seriously incorporated the idea of time slips or time travel. I just really think it would be interesting to play around with. Maybe Neverland is an actual physical island in the real world but in certain spots at certain times, it’s possible for more modern people to slip back into the way it used to be. Or perhaps Hook is the result of a time slip… I would like to play with the idea of multiple Hooks or Pans or Wendys there at the same time too, at different ages. Like if you used Hook, it would be interesting to have a child version of him visit the island while the adult version of him is also present. Maybe no one even realizes initially that they are the same person. Like maybe Peter brings this kid to visit and has zero idea that this kid is also going to become Hook…and neither does the audience until gradually pieces start to fall into place. And Hook himself doesn’t know it. And then it gets to the point where it starts to become clear they’re the same person and everyone is like, “Okay, well, what do we do with this information now to prevent things from playing out badly?” Hook can’t kill the kid without ending his own existence (though maybe that’s what he wants). But Peter and the Lost Boys can’t bring themselves to do anything to him either because at the moment, he��s still loyal to them and a friend. And it plays with the concepts of fate and free-will and nature vs nurture shaping a person and…idk, man. It just would be a super fascinating story to read, I think.

Book one of four; Inspired by Peter Pan and Wendy, The Never King showcases Peter Pan like never before. Dark and broody and wanting something of his that’s been taken, he kidnaps Darling women on their 18th birthday, only to return them with broken minds.

Only, this particular Darling- Winnie- is not like the others and proves it by.. well, I won’t mention spoilers.

But if you’re interested in a decently smutty dark romance, this book is perfect! And definitely have book two ready to go because there is a cliffhanger.

I also have a feeling we’re gonna learn more about Vane given the title of the second book.

* Winnie Darling; love the name. Oh, and we start off right away with mediocre sex. It’s crazy to hear about the Darking women who disappear on their 18th birthday, only to return broken/crazy. Wendy is the great grandmother. Meredith is the mom’s name. Enter Peter Pan who seems hot af. Winnie willingly goes with Peter.

* Peter Pan; bad guy? The Lost Boys; Vane, twins Kas and Bash. Vane likes to make Darlings cry; Kas is a bleeding heart; Bash most likely to fuck Winnie. One rule: don’t fuck the Darlings because fucking Darlings is what got them into this mess.

* Winnie learns the twins are the nice ones, while Peter and Vane are the mean ones. Vane has some type of magic that with just a look, he can make you feel terror like no other.

* Vane, Kas, and Bash are finding it difficult to not fuck the Darling. She moans at the taste of food and Vane’s eyes go black, something about his shadow? Cherry pops up, a woman who has the biggest crush on Vane and wants his attention.

* Sun can kill Peter; pirates are hunting him; magic is waning. What did the Darlings and Tink do?! So Vane looks like a vampire when his shadow takes over.

* Winnie decides Kas might be a weak link because he keeps staring at her body, so she decides she’s gonna fuck him to get him on her side lol.

* Kas and Bash are fae. Fucking a Lost Boy does pan out for Winnie.

* Welp. Bash broke the rule. He fucked Winnie 😂 Peter walks in and makes Bash continue; Bash cums, but just as Winnie is about to cum, Peter pulls her off of him. Now, she’s getting herself off as Peter watches. He then fingerbangs her, reminds her they don’t fuck Darlings, and leaves.

* Winnie befriends Cherry. She talks. A lot. Gets to talking about Hook and slips up, referring to him as “my” before catching herself. Could she be a spy?

* The twins admit to gutting their father which earned them banishment.

* What the fuck is Brownie? Tilly is the twins’s sister, queen of the fae. She wants Neverland under her rule so she’s sabotaging Peter Pan. Peter Pan killed tinker bell. Tilly plans to go against Peter, possibly Hook too.

* Winnie teases Vane. He tries to scare her while pleasuring her, but she’s unruffled. He’s annoyed she’s not scared more. Winnie is trying to get it on with a no-name Lost Boy? Peter is not going to like this.

* “Three, two, one. One, two, three. Better watch out: Peter Pan is going to murder thee.”

* Pan fucks Winnie. Then Bash and Kas fuck her at the same time. Vane spits in her mouth and she gets pissed.

* Vane is known as the Dark One. Peter and Vane kill two of Hook’s pirates.

* Bash and Kas are fae princes.

* Winnie tries to fuck Vane; he denies her.

* The Queen needs to dig into the memories. Why do I get the feeling Tilly made the Darlings mad on purpose?

* So the boys promised Merry, nicknames for Winnie’s mom, that she wouldn’t go insane? And then she did? And wtf, the Death Shadow intervened in the Queen “looking” through Winnie’s memories?!

* Wow. Tinkerbell was in love with Peter, but Peter loved a Darling. So she took his shadow. Bitch.

* Tink was the twin’s mother.

* Winnie helps Peter get his shadow back. They kill the Brownie. Winnie asks to go back to Neverland because she has a feeling Queen Tilly is plotting against Peter and wants to help him.

* Wait, what? Two shadows?!

You Have My Attention: Peter and the Starcatchers First Lines

There are, strictly speaking, four books in this series, but the fourth book wasn't good and I didn't move it from Alaska, so I'm just giving you the first three because those were good and I did thoroughly enjoy them. This trilogy is a reimagining of Peter Pan's origins, and for sheer fun and creative mythos, I strongly recommend them. So let's take a look at how Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson catch their readers!

The tired old carriage, pulled by two tired old horses, rumbled onto the wharf, its creaky wheels bumpety-bumping on the uneven planks, waking Peter from his restless slumber. The carriage interior, hot and stuffy, smelled of five smallish boys and one largish man, none of whom was keen on bathing.

A mango, thought Peter. The perfect weapon. The scrawny, sunburned boy, dressed in a tattered shirt and pants torn off below scabby knees, brushed the unkempt reddish hair out of his face. It fell right back into his eyes as he bent to the sandy soil and scooped up the plump red-and-yellow fruit sphere, a bit bigger than an orange. The mango was squishy to the touch, too ripe for eating. But it was just the thing to drop on somebody's head from a great height. And Peter knew precisely whose head he wanted to drop it on.

What is your favorite outdoor location?

There's this park in town that has really good hiking trails. We don't go as often as I'd like because it's so hot for most of the year, but we ate lunch out there today. As it cools off more, I'm hoping we can make a thing out of it.

August's monthly magnet features James and Peter from S.A. Chant's Peter Darling. I haven't read it, but it's on my tbr.

Just finished reading The Child Thief by Gerald Brom

Not spoiling anything, but the ending got me like

I was going to immediately move on to a book called Vampire Kisses. But now, I'm in that rough stage because of this ending. I need a moment

Book two of four; In this book, we learn more about the characters- where they come from and their family connections. We also finally get to meet Hook and are teased about a future character that everyone seems to be terrified of.

Winnie, who is slowly finding her footing in Neverland, proves to be one of my favorite female characters I’ve read about. She’s not this all-powerful character, but she’s doing her best to hold herself together and prove herself to the boys. Although with the cliffhanger the book ends on, I have a feeling the next one is going to be very interesting.

If you love dark fantasy romance, you’ll love this series, I think. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat and anxious to get to the next page.

* Well, fuck. Peter’s shadow disappeared into Hook’s territory.

* So the two shadows are life and death, and the death shadow just fucking sliced Bash’s throat?! Wtf.

* Lost girls end up in the loft. Vane warns Peter not to do anything because Winnie will be pissed.

* Lol Winnie ran and mauled an unsuspecting Lost Boy. Peter is not happy.

* Damn. Peter really made her their whore and promised he will touch no other. She tried to blow Vane, but he refused. When she continued, he attacked..?

* Vane’s shadow takes over and he nearly kills Peter. Winnie gets him to snap out of it by accidentally stepping on a piece of glass. She ignores the pain but Vane sees the blood and takes control once more. He’s mad at her and leaves.

* So Vane can’t control his shadow because it wants to return to its land. He can give it up, but then Peter wants him to claim neverland’s death shadow. He refuses. Peter wants to call in Vane’s brother, he says no. Peter admits Wendy Darling never went back to the mortal realm, she’s in Everland and Vane’s brother wants her..? Vane and Peter are worried the twins might turn on them.

* Cherry is gonna be a problem when Vane finally gives in to Winnie. Calling it rn.

* Well, shit. Cherry is Hook’s sister.

* Yep. Definitely a problem. She doesn’t want Vane to want Winnie. This is not good.

* Oh fuck. Vane asked Hook permission for Peter to enter his territory to look for a lost Lost Boy. If he agrees, he gets his sister back and Cherry is not happy. Hook somehow knows the real reason Peter wants to enter his land and directs his men to look for Peter’s shadow. He intends to claim it for himself.

* Winnie plans to give Vane the cold shoulder so he’ll want her lol.

* Well fuck you, Tilly. I hope your brothers kill you.

* Vines are not supposed to do THAT! Lmao. And now she’s sitting on Bash’s face.

* Kas comes to the realization that he will choose Winnie over his sister, the court, AND his wings.

* Fucking finally! It’s about time you gave in, Vane. Even if you almost lost your shit and killed Winnie lol.

* If Cherry claims the death shadow in her room, I’m gonna be so fucking pissed. Don’t reward the pathetic girl.

* Everyone is making promises. One is bound to break.

* Fuck. Hook caught Peter’s shadow. Dude just can’t catch a break.

* Fuck you, Tilly. Attacking Pan and Winnie and your brothers.

* Fuck you too, Cherry. You’re seriously hoping the death shadow will kill Winnie? I hope the death shadow lets Winnie claim it. Fuck everyone.

* Anahahahaha. Holy fuck! The shadow claimed Winnie!!!!

* I have a feeling a person has to have been through some shit for the death shadow to let them claim it. We all know Winnie has been broken over and over, and Vane seems like he’s been broken in the past. I can’t wait to see this play out.
