What makes White Collar hold up so much better than other police procedurals:

It was part of the "pretty happy shows with gorgeous ensemble casts and a charismatic weird guy" USA network era but it somehow used that to be about stuff that is so REAL

What is justice? Is our system fair? Can you be a criminal and still be a good man? Can you be a good man and still work for the system?

The bad guys are rich assholes, and people defrauding families out of their homes, and unethical pharmaceutical companies. People manipulating energy supply out of greed resulting in blackouts which are showing *harming a dog,* aka how to show something is monstrous in a pg show written by a white person. Class exists in this universe in more ways than having a cardboard concept of a "rich guy."

The bad guys include police, FBI agents, prison staff, judges, senators. Those people cause real harm, obstruct justice, plant evidence, kill people. It's shown how the system protects them and harms regular people.

The harm that causes the main character to go from wanting to be part of the system, to subverting and working against it, is him finding out about an act of police corruption, brutality, and murder--and what's more, that if he became a cop, that's what he could become.

The harm that causes the main character to be outside the white picket fence is that the system failed his family after that act. What happened to Neal's mom? Why did nobody besides Helen step in? They had to check in with US Marshals, did nobody notice this kid didn't have an adult fit to parent?

So Neal turns to found family. And let's be real, heavily polyamory coded found family at that. But he keeps chasing the idea of a girl who will be everything. But he's got all this attachment trauma so he never does. But because found family is real family, even the people who freaking played the characters are still connected a decade later

Ok I’ve been rewatching the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I have some THOUGHTS!

(I have not finished the fourth movie so this is about the first three, tho really mostly the third one, At World’s End. This also mostly has nothing to do with Captain Jack Sparrow because he is perfect, no notes)

1) Why didn’t Elizabeth join Will on The Flying Dutchman at the end of At World’s End?

And you may be saying “Eli you have to be dying in order to join the crew!” Stab her! Easy fix! That’s how Will died!

Next you’ll try to be like, “Eli you have to be afraid of death to join the crew!” Bitch where? Yeah at first it may seem like that because Davy Jones is going around “are you afraid of death?” But the guys gambling their years? Will offering to join the crew for eternity as a bet? None of them were afraid to die in those moments! I think all that is needed is an agreement (most of the time audible) to staying on as crew and how many years they are willing to serve.

To anyone that wants to argue that being crew of the Flying Dutchman is an eternal punishment no it is not. It was only that way because Davy Jones created that situation from his own betrayal and grief. Will would never create such a hostile work environment so long as his father (and/or Elizabeth) are there to keep him sane.

So I think at the end of that movie Elizabeth should have either stabbed her self or made Will do it and join the Flying Dutchman’s crew for as long as he was captain. I think she would make it as first-mate while also still holding out her title as King of the Pirates so they could be equals to one another. Elizabeth goes to the pirates meetings as both the King of Pirates and representative for Captain Will of the Flying Dutchman. They live together happily. The End.

The only excuse I will take for Elizabeth not joining the crew of the Flying Dutchman is that she has given herself the duty of protecting Will’s heart as the King of Pirates which brings me onto my next point.

2) If Elizabeth Swann didn’t get to keep her title as King of the Pirates I’m going to riot!

I think if she didn’t become a part of the Flying Dutchman’s crew then she should’ve taken Will’s heart and kept it at the cove where all the pirates held their meeting! At the cove she continues building it up as a pirate stronghold and place of neutral pirate territory (meaning a place of relative peace).

“Eli why would pirates have a king who rules over them?” That is not what Elizabeth as the King of Pirates would be doing. She would hold the cove as a pirate stronghold, be able to call on the nine pirate lords when the need arises, be the final deciding vote in major pirate decisions that need a deciding vote, and be a middle man when pirates (specifically lords) are having major issues that can’t be resolved any other way. The cove would be yet another safe place for pirates to convene when they need to and Elizabeth as the King would oversee it with her crew.

In this she would have her own crew or multiple crews for different purposes. One of her crews goes to sail the seas and pillage and bring back riches for the cove and the other stays and keeps everything running, they can even switch off (other pirates would not be required to pay taxes to Elizabeth in this scenario). If you think a pirate captain owning multiple ships and crews under their command is unrealistic then look into the real life Pirate Queen Zheng Yi Sao (also just look into her cause she’s really cool and if you like pirates you’ll love her story).

This way Elizabeth could protect Will’s heart at the pirate stronghold she is king of but she could also still go off to sea to see Will when she wants to.

3)I hate love triangles and think polyam relationships are fun (basically fan fiction)

Anyone else watch the fight scene in Dead Man’s Chest and were like “damn James and Will should kiss.” Cause…

Wow guys way to have both the gayest choreography and eye contact I’ve ever seen as someone who watched Spies are Forever. Like they also right after this fight over Elizabeth but damn if I couldn’t cut their sexual tension with a knife. Anyone else but Captain Jack Sparrow would have been so uncomfortable being the third wheel of this fight.

And I know what you’re saying “Eli James dies saving Elizabeth and her crew in At World’s End.” Yeah, ok, but what if he didn’t? This is my post about my thoughts I’m allowed to write some fan fiction while I’m thinking about it!

Anyway here’s my thoughts on how their polyam relationship could go if the writers weren’t cowards.

I think they all go on to do completely different things, separating for as long as they want basically. Elizabeth keeps being King of the Pirates basically as stated above, Will becomes Captain of the Flying Dutchman as he does in canon, and James either becomes a pirate himself (joining either of their crews) or keeps hunting down pirates as he’s been doing the whole series (preferably not working for the East Trading Company anymore for obvious reasons of the company just being the worst(you know what I’m talking about here)).

If James becomes a pirate he would stay on as Elizabeth’s first mate. He takes care of the other half of her crew while she’s away. James spends most of his time out at sea collecting treasure for the pirate stronghold but when Elizabeth wants to sail he stays at the stronghold to keep things (Will’s heart) safe there. Elizabeth and James take turns on visiting the Flying Dutchman.

If James continues doing as he has always done and hunts down pirates then there could be a much more interesting story there. I don’t think he’d actually continue to try doing any real damage, he’s more of a double agent. He pretends to be really dead set on hunting down the King of Pirates and the Flying Dutchman basically keeping all the other pirate hunters away from Elizabeth and Will. I’d love to see all three of them actually pretending to hate each other and be dead set on each other’s destruction but then when they capture each other they’re just like “are you doing ok? Do you need anything? Fruit? A warm blanket? Are you taking care of yourself?” And they’re just generally so sweet to each other. They play up hating each other because they’re all bored af and live for the drama ngl.

In that terms there are two ways it could go as they grow older. Either the hatred and bitterness become real and they actually end tragically or Elizabeth and James just join the Flying Dutchman’s crew and they continue on going and being really sweet and taking care of the souls they fairy on. Both options could be so much fun!

And with that onto the last real thing I wanted to talk about that has nothing to do with Elizabeth and Will.

4) Gay pirates getting married!

Just so everyone is aware this was a thing back in the day. Pirates very often got gay married and would share all of their loot with one another and basically do everything with one another. Sound familiar? Cause it should.

That’s right. I’m 100% convinced these two idiots were married! And you might be like “Eli they made some pretty creepy remarks.” Yeah, they did, they’re pirates and bad people. Pirates don’t generally care about that type of stuff but I’m also sure they fucking talked shit out.

Anyway they definitely got married by Captain Jack Sparrow but then then they mutinied they got married again by Captain Barbossa just to “make sure it’s still legit” but in reality they just wanted to get married again. I’m sure Barbossa didn’t actually care tho as he enjoys weddings too and is always happy to up his Captain credits.

Also!

Barbossa married these two as well! If no one remembers the end of At World’s these two join the pirates! I think that they got married like right after they left Jack and Mr. Gibbs. Barbossa again wanted to up his Captain credit.

Some background for her though, her name is Hozira and is a half-elf from distant ice lands. We met in a deep pine forest up north, and got to know each other, killed some guys as bounty hunters for a bit, got married, and then during one of our bounties we were collecting, she got stabbed* and then dragged down into the pit with the other Beasts.

*she was actually alright, she had a mithril shirt on, but I had gotten pushed down the slope of the mountain hitting my head on a rock, and essentially forgetting where we were fighting

I do end up finding her again, but this is after we win back Erebor. I decide to quest with my husband* and maybe see if I can find wherever Hozira and I were, and bury her properly.

*I married the dwarf, Bofur lmao

Eventually we find her alive in our first home and it's like that scene from HTTYD2 and then we all end up being polyam and silly :3

For the longest time I’ve been thinking these thoughts as well that I don’t think the Ace label fits me completely. It’s not completely wrong but it’s not the whole picture. Before I came to this same understanding I made the decision to not have children or get married. Now that I’m coming to terms with the fact that I actually have low energy I’m still not sure how life will look. I was starting to think that I was non commital and that my ideal relationship would just be a long term partner. I don’t think I have the energy for « society’s relationship expectations » and I don’t feel like bothering other people because I already know they don’t want to deal with me. What are some of your long term relationships tips? It’s either that or I stay single forever which is an idea that’s I’ve always considered as an option. One of the things with being Ace is that when you don’t just follow the script that’s when your the villain. Any other time our sexuality is convient for the system so it’s fine but the minute it starts disrupting their program suddenly what was once admirable is now disdained. Can we briefly mention what sexual power looks like when your this sexuality. I’m super self conscious about how I dress because I know I can’t event express my sexuality the way I want to because people might get the wrong impression. I’m not looking for anything I’m expressing myself because with the little energy I have left I use for creativity. I don’t have a problem with people doing things to signal sexual willingness my problem is the violence in our society when someone finds you hot and you don’t want to « put out » That’s not even getting into the mind games that the genders are playing with each other just the idea of it makes me not want to date. I’m tired just thinking about it. I’m really starting to imagine my life as the village witch living in the forest far from the villagers.

I also don't know that Ace/Aro really fits me but whatever I'm experiencing is at least Ace/Aro adjacent because there's a major overlap in experiences - getting frustrated with compulsory sexuality/romance, chaffing against society being organized around romantic and sexual coupling, simply not having impulses that my friends and family do. I made the decision very young that I didn't want to get married. I wanted to care for children but I didn't necessarily want to physically have any. So I knew from a pretty young age I was going a different route - in those ways I really relate to a lot of aceness.

However, I'm hearing from so many people that dating has become exhausting. And it's substantially more of a sentiment than it was say 10 years ago. Research backs this up - fewer people are dating and having sex. The younger you are, the more pronounced this is. So clearly there's also been a cultural shift in and around dating that's made it unsustainable for a lot of people as well. I'm sure that's also shaping my desire too.

So it's difficult to parse for me.

I think I have very little in the way of advice for long term relationships for a few reasons.

One, while I've been with my partner for seven years, it's been a tumultuous relationship. She was originally diagnosed with BPD and more recently was diagnosed with NPD. While I care about her a whole lot, she's not exactly emotionally available and it's taken years of painstaking effort on my part to establish norms and guide us toward a point of relative stability in our home life. Even if therapy and treatment eventually lead to her being more available, the likelihood of other aspects of a typical relationship (sexual desire, level of romantic reciprocity, etc) lining up seem low.

"Then leave!" I always hear.

No. Because on some level this works. We both are polyam/relationship anarchists who value our friendships very highly and build parts of our lives around them. We have similar preferences in how home and finances should be maintained. She has few preferences in areas I have many and vice versa. She's very good at things I suck at (bureaucracy, paying bills, speaking with officials, etc) and I'm good at things she sucks at (meal planning, ordering and organizing inventory, maintaining a social calendar, etc). While she's far from perfect, she's the most functional and helpful roommate I've ever had. I simply cannot afford to live on my own and neither could she.

So I feel like I have little to offer in the way of long term relationship advice other than don't be afraid to establish relationship norms that aren't common in other relationships. If the other person is on board, you're not harming any one. I know of no one who's been living with someone for 5+ years who has stuck 100% to the classic romantic formula for success.

My parents have been together for 30+ years and have always maintained a high degree of autonomy and alone time - even with my mom's stroke leaving her paralyzed on her right side several years ago. I have a friend who's lived separately in the same town from her long term partner of multiple years and they're both quite happy with that arrangement. I think often of the research lead I worked under who lived in a completely different city than her husband for 10+ years. They visited each other's spaces most weekends but not all.

A lot of things people swear are innately part of a relationship are really optional. The base model is respect and mutual appreciation, everything else is an upsell. Take it or leave it.

Per dressing to express - I think miscommunication is just always going to happen. People act according to their lenses and there's no way to completely circumvent that. And yeah, they're hellishly rude and can even be dangerous about that but there's no way to be totally free of it since it's so far outside of ones own control.

I have found no way to accurately communicate my sexuality/preferences through my appearance with any reliability. My classic example of this for me is that it seems like no matter how I dress, people on dating apps assume I'm a top/dom/pleasure centered. Even when I included a picture of me in self bondage and explicitly listed my preferences on one more open minded app - only seemed to get interest from bottoms/subs/pleasure centered folks. Many of whom didn't bother to ask they were so certain - just based on my look. I've just come away from those experiences pretty convinced that people see what they want to see regardless of how hard you try to communicate yourself.

So fuck em. As frustrating as it all is there's really only one path I've found - do what you want (as long as you're not hurting anyone.)

As yanderes, Sun and Sky would be a terrifying duo.

Who would even consider that the mortal incarnation of the goddess and her chosen hero would have such obscure thoughts? They have a perfect mask, especially with the fact that they have a pretty good relationship with everyone in Skyloft.

To make it worse, they love each other as much as they love you, and make a terrific team to make sure you will stay with them.

Sky is a delusional and overprotective yandere, thinking that you’re just joking when you exclaim that you don’t love him, that you hate him. He doesn’t understand your humor, but he knows that you love him, you just aren’t good with words. Although you have felt the way his grip tightens around your wrist when you yell about how creepy he’s being.

He won’t ever left you alone. What if some creature appeared to kidnap you? Maybe something like what happened to Sun could happen to you! He insists it’s for your own good. Holding hands with him it’s more like being handcuffed.

Sun is also a delusional type, but also manipulative. She knows how to make you stay with the two of them, or at least make you hesitate. Planting the seed of hesitation, she knows it’s a matter of time before you come back to them. She’s sure you love them too much to stay away, don’t you?

But it’s more about the way others avoid you for all the things she’s innocently spread about you unknown reasons, leaving you feeling completely abandoned, and craving the attention from the two that promised to never stop loving you.

They try to make it look like a healthy, happy relationship, and everyone would believe this mask of theirs. Although, in their heads, it is a healthy relationship.

Both are relatively harmless when it comes to causing physical harm besides some bruising caused by how hard they grab you sometimes, but most of what makes them terrifying comes from how they can make you depend on them.

They would make you betray your own brain. You know that you should stay away, that all those smiles and soft praises are just appearances, hiding the fact that they’re trying to chain you to them. Hiding how many awful things they would do if you were to try to fully escape from their grasp.

Sun has it easy to make comments about you, acting all oblivious and making others believe her. Why would such a sweet girl lie? And so, you’d only have her and her lover to stay with you.

There aren’t many people you can talk to in the first place, and hylians are social creatures, so you’d end up walking to them, answering them even if you tried to avoid it, and that’s enough for Sun to get you to feel comforted with a smile. Once again, you’d be caught in their web.

Even though Sky asks you if he can join whenever you’re going out, he’d stalk you if you say no. Following you from a distance so you won’t notice, but close enough to be able to hear you should you talk to someone. And, depending on the person, he might tell Sun about it. They can’t have you finding comfort anywhere else.

And, if you ever managed to ignore Sun’s words and escape from Sky, it’d be useless. The Master Sword would guide him to you, just as it did when he was looking for his blonde lover during his adventure.

No matter how fast you run or how well you hide, they would find you, even if you ran to the end of the world.

No one ever has had to choose a type of love to engage in exclusively. Even like, Victorian times, love and relationships had an entirely different meaning; the kind of Exclusive Relationship we know today (I like to call it the Facebook Official) is NEW, and relatively under-explored. Back the , marrying someone and also being their equal, that was new. It all changes.

There is platonic and romantic love, on the surface, you know those. But romanticism? In poetry and writing and art? It refers to the rose-tinted view of life and it's subjects, and so could apply to anything; have you ever seen a painting of two people, pillow-soft skin and morning light and whatnot, in bed together with grapes and flowers and what have you. Two kittens sleeping, a pinkened corn field, wildflowers. That IS romanticism! It's the romantic view on life, la vie en rose, Life In Pink, and whatnot! There it nothing more or less to it, there you go. It seeing life through love.

Ok that was my rant on romance in a literary sense. I'm gonna cool down before I write a book.

The point is, the point of love is not to ask for a definition, the point of love is to have it and feel it as is and that's it. Love cares not for your words or statuses or arbitrary requirements. As you are wont to say, love is love is love is love is love.

I think I saw talk of that 'vote' on a new polyam flag in the autumn/winter of 2022, but it can really depend on what parts of tumblr you're on as to whether it's considered The New Flag. (I've seen that black/blue/red flag with tweaked saturation from the original with a golden heart+infinity sign. I've seen a blue/green flag with that heart+infinity sign. Then a red/yellow/blue flag with a black chevron. Then I think a design with a circle and a different shade of red/yellow/blue went around?) That flag is more, like, the currently new one. [This is not some sort of attack on said flag; just a little context for anyone who's already aware of some other polyam flag and didn't know where this 'new' one came from.]

anyways, my cdlc mc: sasha vitari, a relatively reserved personality who presents as exceedingly prim and proper. prefect, fairly studious, enjoys horse riding as her token physical activity!

was very well educated in upper class etiquette/behaviour from a young age due to her parents ambitions for the family to social climb n tends to follow the role expected of her to a T, but isnt actually snobbish abt it? struggled a lot internally with relating to her peers as a kid n ended up adopting the strict social scripts as a sort of aid/mask for how to behave, but doesn’t really expect the same of others. under the mask is pretty plain spoken, doesn’t emote as much, but is deeply earnest (yes shes nd haha)

rather agreeable (maybe even a bit of a pushover) n intrigued by people who don’t feel the need to follow social norms - quietly delighted by it and willing to go with their flow.

Chihiro started figuring out her identity relatively young. She just knew that there were some things about her that weren’t the way they appeared, and she wanted to explore them.

With that said, she generally kept most of that to herself unless she felt really comfortable with people. She changed schools when some of her old friends ditched her during her transition.

Now that she was at Hope’s Peak, she started to feel a lot more comfortable in her skin. That was thanks in part to her new friends being so open about their own identities.

It was then that she realized she was polyamorous, too. She already knew she was bisexual, but knowing some other polyamorous people led her to that realization for herself.

She was honestly really glad to have her new friends. They were all so nice to her, so genuine, and she right back to them. There were still rough days, but she felt so good.
