Ju’s thoughts - Wow! How come a fic written from a terrible beginning be so soft and perfect? Canon divergence from JC strangulating WWX and leaving him to die. After that, it is so soft, WWX has a good family who cares for him, he is so loved, and he shows all his potential. I love it.

The man was agitated, tense when he walked through the wards, resentful energy swirling around him and making the back of Xichen’s neck prickle. There was a coldness in his eyes that made him fear for the fate that his brother had been slated for.

He didn’t want to look away, to leave an opening for the Yiling Patriarch to attack, to steal more than he already was - Wangji’s safety, Wangji’s future, Wangji’s innocence - but helplessly, he glanced down to the boy at his side. He wanted to gauge how reluctant and afraid he was, Xichen could live with having ended his own life for the sake of his brother’s – 

Lan Xichen stared. 

Wangji was smiling, his eyes slightly thinned and the barest of curves to his lips. There wasn’t an ounce of tension in his shoulders; this was quite literally the most relaxed he’d ever seen his brother, and it was in the face of the ruination of the rest of his life. 

Their uncle stepped forward and cleared his throat, bowing low. Xichen snapped his eyes up again, catching the Patriarch glancing away from his direction, from Wangji ’s direction. He swallowed back bile.

“We greet the immortal Yiling Patriarch. It is good that you arrived safely.” His uncle had stayed in his bow while spoke, stiff words belying the expression surely being hidden on his face.

The immortal’s gray eyes were fixated on their Sect Leader, lips twitching with some unspoken thought but ultimately settling into a frown. Something about the tilt of his brow seemed confused.

“Qiren Laoshi,” his uncle near flinched at the address, to small to be caught by anyone outside the family, “I realize that this one’s arrival had been on somewhat short notice, –”

(Short notice was an understatement. While a month may have been plenty for two sects already deep into negotiations and well familiar with each other, a month wherein the immortal, heretical Yiling Patriarch had sent a brief missive asking for the hand of Lan Wangji, the youngest nephew of the Lan Sect Leader and the second in line for heir of their sect, a year would not have been enough.

Wangji was 12 years old . This was vile; this was terrifying. They could not have refused)

“ – but I am surprised at the delegation surrounding you.” The use of ‘delegation’ was improper here, as it was himself that had traveled to Gusu, but perhaps the man saw the entire region as his. It would not have surprised him.

Qiren had straightened while the other spoke, though all Xichen could see was his back, stiff shoulders not moving an inch.

“We meant no disrespect, Master Patriarch,” the man’s eyebrow ticked up in surprise, “this lowly one did not want to overwhelm. We are only meeting to speak on the conditions, yes?” 

This was emphatically not what the Patriarch had written and requested, but he seemed to take the adjustment in stride. He grinned suddenly, tension dropping from his shoulders.

“Oh, of course, Sect Leader Lan!” He placed his hands behind his back. “I’ll let you lead the way to where we might sit and talk.” His demeanor was suddenly much more friendly, smile wide and mischievous, rocking slightly in place where he stood. Wangji let out a huff at the sight, that Xichen would have sworn was a laugh, in literally any other circumstances.

The ‘negotiations’ were long, at the behest of his uncle. 

In the scant few minutes that Xichen had sat in for the meeting, the Patriarch had seemed unusually accommodating, offering funds, visitation rights, and giving into his uncle’s demands without much hesitation.

His uncle was obviously getting desperate, trying to find a way to delay the inevitable. Xichen couldn’t stand staying in that room any longer, watching the unholy glee barely hidden on the immortal’s face, and knowing that in a few days Wangji would be –

Lan Qiren gritted his teeth, trying not to show his frustration on his face or in his voice. He would have called the man in front of him a trying brat, had he not been his elder by nearly a millennia. 

“I am not sure you understand the position you are putting us in, Patriarch Wei, Wangji is meant to receive training as a sect heir and as support for his brother in the position when he should receive it.” Qiren took a breath. “If Lan Wangji and you are wed, we would require extreme compensation and for some of our teachers to visit Yiling, teaching him what he has still yet to learn.”

The man in front of him waved his hand dismissively and spoke.

“There are no worries there at all, Master Teacher. I’ll happily pay whatever you need of me, and I won’t make Lan Zhan’s home a prison.” The sound of his nephew’s given name from this pervert ’s mouth was going to cause an incident, because Qiren was going to stab him. “You all are welcome to visit our home, and of course he can travel where he wishes. He’ll be able to have his lessons here if that is more comfortable.”

“I appreciate your generosity.” The words burned in Qiren’s mouth, and the Patriarch’s eyes gleamed, like he was enjoying his pain.

“I must ask though, is any of this necessary if Lan Zhan is going to be marrying into the Yiling sect? He won’t be in line to be the heir of GusuLan anymore, right?” He tugged on his unruly black hair, seeming to seriously contemplate the question.

I've been looking everywhere for a story where Wei Ying is a reincarnated phoenix and doesn't know it. He eventually finds out and because of everything he goes through, he's taken over by the pheonix, and the firebird part of him wants to destroy the world.

I remember the sects locked him in the Gusu caves while they tried to find out how to control him.

Eventually Lan Zhan figures out a loophole where the Phoenix/firebird agrees to hold off until Lan Zhan dies...and then Lan Zhan cultivates immortality as a loophole. I remember it was on AO3 and was complete.

Especially when we see him from another POV where he looks so scary but in his head he is the softest most traumatized boy. Percy is everything to me. It's taking too long.

Weeks have dragged on into months. Her uncle hadn't expected her to find it quickly, otherwise he wouldn't have set up a marriage in lieu of some sort of visit, but Wen Qing knows that his patience has to be fraying.

But she's searched Lotus Pier top to bottom, has gone diving in their lakes and climbed their mountains, but the Yin Iron is nowhere to be found, not even a hint of it. She knows it has to be around somewhere, but the tools they'd used to confirm it's existence don't do her any good now. It must not be as precise as they thought it was, because it always goes off, says that she's practically on top of it or right next to it, but short of tearing Lotus Pier down board by board she's not sure what else she's supposed to do.

It doesn't help that Wen Ning loves it here. That he's so open and happy, that he and Wei Wuxian often go hunting together or practice their archery, that Jiang Yanli always has a soft smile and something warm and edible for him. It doesn't help that everyone is so nice to her, that being Wei Wuxian's wife accords her respect and deference from everyone in Lotus Pier. It had made it easy to search, but guilt rolls around in her stomach every time a friendly face is happy to show around their Madam Wei.

"Are you alright, Wen Qing?" Jiang Cheng asks.

She looks up from scowling into the pond to find her brother in law staring at her, his eyebrows dipped together. She should brush him off, should change the subject, but instead she asks, "Has your father ever wanted something out of you that you couldn't give?"

His eyebrows shoot up. "Talking to Wei Wuxian, are you?"

Well, he is her husband, but she has no idea what Jiang Cheng is implying.

That must be obvious, because a moment later his cheeks color and she says, "He used to always compare me and Wei Wuxian growing up, and I never came out ahead."

"But you're," she starts, then stops herself, frowning.

Jiang Cheng is smart and strong and dedicated to his clan. He's a cut above his peers and an admirable heir.

But she's spent months with Wei Wuxian. She's seen him and Lan Wangji spar. She's seen him and Jiang Cheng spar.

"You're better suited to clan head," she says impulsively and the refuses to regret it because it's true. Wei Wuxian may be the superior fighter and have a knack for seals that borders on inhuman, to say nothing of the flute she's never seen him use. She assumes he has to be at least competent with it, considering he bothers to carry it around, but she's only seen the Lan musical cultivation used a few times. It's surprising that they let an outsider learn it, but considering how enamored Lan Wangji is with Wei Wuxian, it's possible he taught it to him without his clan's permission.

"Thank you," Jiang Cheng says, his eyes warm, and a smile on his face that she does her best to sear into her memory.

She doubts he'll ever smile at her again after she kills his brother.

Loving how one of the first parts of the novel that are not from Wei Wuxian's POV is Lan Wangji, after literally pushing Wei Wuxian out the window (which will never stop being funny to me), closing his eyes and covering his ears, in a desperate but futile attempt to stop hearing Wei Wuxian's laughter.

Lan Wangji finally bodily threw him out of the Library Pavilion.

Wei Wuxian laughed while plummeting through the air. “HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!”

Lan Wangji slammed the window shut with a loud bang, then collapsed next to his desk. He scanned the room, strewn with a mess of papers, inked pawprints, and two white rabbits rolling around with lettuce leaves. He closed his eyes, covering his ears.

The rustling yulan magnolia branches veiled the window and shut out the outside. But no matter how hard Lan Wangji fought it, Wei Wuxian’s spirited and boisterous laughter could not be so easily shut out.

It is the first glimpse we have of how Lan Wangji's feelings are changing, as well as the intensity with which Lan Wangji feels things, even if his face shows nothing.

And the fact that he tries to stop his feelings by shutting down his senses in that innocent way is so endearing. The poor boy was so overwhelmed already by Wei Wuxian's teasing that he didn't know what to do anymore. He even stopped going to class the next day!

I just wish Wei Wuxian could have seen that, I bet he would have been absolutely delighted to see Lan Wangji react in such a way.

Kay's comments: What I love about Wen Ning as a character is that he's literally a sweet cinnamon roll, too good for this world too pure, but if you mess with Wei Wuxian, you should sleep with one eye open. Relateable king. In this story, it's Lan Xichen who messes with Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning is around to hear it aka the character assassination of Lan Xichen we all deserved. Also, rest in pieces Jin Guangyao. Also, also, another Wen Ning hit against Jiang Cheng that just hits right. Excerpt: “With the ways in which he looked and talked to you when he saved you and hid you in that cave, even someone who was blind or deaf could perceive his feelings, which was why my uncle was in such anger. Wangji was a model for the disciples when he was young, and a prominent cultivator when he grew up. In his whole life he had been honest and righteous and immaculate—you were the only mistake he made! And you say—and you say you do not know. Wei-gongzi, after you returned like this, how did you pester him and confess to him? Every night…every night, you had to—and you say you do not know? If you did not know, why did you do such things?” Suddenly, Wen Ning cannot continue to stand idly by. That Lan-zongzhu would blame Wei-gongzi for Lan-er-gongzi's actions— —oh, he has only felt this angry twice, the first when they killed a-jie in front of him, the second only the night before when Jiang Wanyin also had the audacity to blame Wei-gongzi for things he could not control.

I'm currently on chapter 21 of the 37 posted. As I mentioned before, this is a work in progress. I have to admit that I usually don't read or fully commit to WIPs that don't have set the number of chapters the story will have. The "/?" really gives me anxiety.

I gave this story a go because I thought I'd read it slower, seeing as I'm reading several things at once, but oh surprise, I'm taken with it and I can't seem to stop. It's a really interesting take on how thing's would've happened "if things went like..." and I'm enjoying the fact that it's mostly on an outsiders POV. Those are fun to me.

Okay, people blame all the miscommunication on LWJ but have they ever considered how the situation may look from his pov? WWXs enormous crush is obvious to the readers but not to LWJ. His behaviour might seem confusing from the outside pov.

I think WWX's behaviour caused LWJ a lot of confusion and frustration.

I mean, WWX flirts with him pretty much in all their interactions across both his lives*. LWJ is very aware of this because he tells him, 'If you do not have those intentions, do not flirt with others. You are doing as you please yet others will be in turmoil.' (ch.54). He's not 'in turmoil' because he's jealous that WWX had been flirting with Mianmian (or at least, that's a minor part in it). WWX flirts with girls all the time, LWJ is aware of this, he's aware of the fact that WWX doesn't feel anything towards her (or any of the others), this is precisely the thing that frustrates him, because WWX behaves this way with him too (or at least appears to, LWJ has no way of knowing that WWX actually has real feelings for him. WWX doesn't even know this).

*Notable examples of flirty behaviour in his first life since there are somehow people who miss his planet-sized crush — Constantly trying to get LWJ's attention and calling him er-gege (not inherently flirty but is when taken in the context of everything else), drawing a portrait of LWJ & winking at him, seeking him out and saying 'did you miss me~' and giving him gifts, finding LWJ in the cold spring and draping himself over the rocks and murmuring 'lan zhan' in his ear then stripping, then purposefully trying to move closer to/touch LWJ while they're both nakey, throwing flowers for him at Phoenix Mountain & in Yunmeng (while knowing he is imitating how girls behave with their crushes), pretending to faint to 'trick' LWJ into catching and holding him when he visited Yiling.

When WWX is flirting with the jiejies in Caiyi town, JC comments that he is 'flirting around again,' (which carries a double meaning because WWX had just been flirting with LWJ too), so it is evident to LWJ that WWX casually flirts with whoever. WWX seems barely aware of what he's doing, which only frustrates LWJ further,

'Lan WangJi looked at him quietly, “Do you behave in such a frivolous way towards everyone?”

Wei WuXian thought for a second, “I think so?”

Lan WangJi looked at the ground. He only replied a moment later, “How impudent!”

The word was spat through gritted teeth and tinged with an inexplicable bitterness'.

As well as that, WWX several times suggests, or outright says, that he is straight.

When he gives LWJ straight porn — '“What kind of person are you?!” “What kind of person could I be? I’m a guy!” Wei Wuxian said. Lan Wangji’s tone was cutting. “You have no shame!” “I have to be ashamed? Don’t tell me you’ve never looked at these things. I don’t believe it.” Evidently, in WWX's view, looking at straight porn is just the standard expected thing for him to do, as a guy. He evens expects LWJ to have done so too. Obviously this is comphet talking, but to LWJ is simply comes across as if the boy he's crushing on is straight, and cannot even fathom being anything else. LWJ never appears to struggle with any expectation that he should be interested in women, nor does his family find his queerness unusual, so it's probable that WWX's struggles with his sexuality are hard for LWJ realise and understand at this point, esp because he's so young and preoccupied with his own feelings.

In the cold spring scene, WWX's flirting reaches unhinged levels, he also starts complimenting LWJ, and says, '“Lan Zhan, did you figure out what I was trying to do earlier?” “No,” Lan Wangji replied. “Really, you didn’t know? I was kissing up to you so you’d be my friend.” Lan Wangji side-eyed him. “What are you trying to accomplish?”' LWJ asks WWX what exactly his intentions are, clearly he thinks just trying to be friends is not a good explanation for the things WWX does. But WWX insists he really just wants LWJ to be his friend, he says if he's his friend he'll share his porn books (btw the word used is 春宫图 which refers exclusively to het erotica), then WWX goes on to insist that girls won't like how LWJ is behaving, then tries to convince him to come to Yunmeng with the promise that there are pretty girls there. So WWX really does just repeatedly flirt with LWJ, in this situation he does not only reiterate that he is attracted to women, but also just operates under the assumption that LWJ is too. LWJ again can only reasonably take from this interaction that WWX firmly identifies as straight and isn't generally open to anything else.

(Yes bisexuality exists but I do not think characters within the text (or perhaps the text itself) have much awareness of that. Eg, it is decided based on MXY's cutsleeve behaviour that he cannot possibly be WWX, because it was widely 'known' that WWX was attracted to women. Aside from that, imo MXTX repeatedly wrote all these examples of WWX's supposed attraction to women with the purpose of it coming across to LWJ as if WWX could not possibly return his feelings because LWJ's unconditional love of him with no expectation of anything in return is a key part of his character. From a storytelling perspective there isn't really any other reason for these scenes to exist.)

And then there is that infamous scene in Xuanwu Cave when WWX strips and pulls LWJ's clothes off too, pretending that he has certain intentions, though his real purpose was obvs to help LWJ. (Also I think 'Wei WuXian took off all of his clothes and tore them to shreds, “What do I want to do? Right now, we two are the only ones here. I’m already making it so obvious— what do you think I want to do?”' (ch.54) echoes the cold spring scene — 'Wei Wuxian kicked off his boots, removed his clothes, and threw them everywhere. “I took off all my clothes and you’re still asking me what I’m doing here."' (ch.18), implying that WWX was on some level aware of how his actions came across back then, though couldn't consciously address it). The exchange ends with LWJ asking WWX not to do things like this, 'Although he knew that it was out of good will, Lan WangJi still seemed a bit annoyed, “… Can you not make this kind of joke again?!”' He's still annoyed in large part because this is not the first time WWX has pulled this exact trick, 'good will' is not all there is to it. WWX misunderstands and decides to placate him by assuring him that he is straight, '"Don’t worry—I don’t like men, I won’t take advantage of the opportunity and do anything to you.”' Unsurprisingly, this only seems to annoy LWJ further. Probably because WWX has constantly been making these types of 'jokes' and the fact that WWX seemingly has no real feelings behind them is precisely why LWJ reacts badly to it.

LWJ isn't someone who lacks empathy and understanding, when it comes to WWX he is always watching him. So, it probably does occur to him that WWX's insistence that he is straight can perhaps not be taken at face value (especially when they spend a lot of time together in WWX's second life). Actually, after the Phoenix Mountain flower throwing, LWJ is quite insistent that WWX admit to being to one who did it, 'Holding the flower, Lan WangJi seemed to be quite cold. His tone seemed cold as well, “Was it you?”' Then in Yunmeng, LWJ asks WWX why he did it 'Lan WangJi, “Why?” Wei WuXian, “Why not? I just wanted to see how you’d react to such a thing.” Lan WangJi, “Ridiculous.”' (LWJ responds here with his signature '无聊', which carries a connotation of doing something pointless, because you're so bored you have nothing else to do, which I think is reflective of how he takes WWX's flirting overall.)

So, LWJ probably considers the possibility that there is actually something more to WWX's flirting, and wants to get him to admit he does it and asks him why he does it. But I think LWJ is also hesitant to dwell on this possibility too much as he is very fearful of violating WWX's boundaries, I think he's very concerned about wishful thinking or making assumptions or inadvertently projecting his feelings onto WWX. All this is also reflected in how LWJ warns WWX several times in his second life to be aware of his actions/words ('Mark your words', 'are you sure you want to do this', 'do not fool around', 'you reap what you sow'), he sincerely wants WWX to think about what he does, he doesn't want to allow or reciprocate WWX's advances if there's a possibility he's just messing around and doesn't mean it. Basically, he really wants to avoid a situation where they do anything together for any reason other than that's what WWX truly wants.

Wei Wuxian stared openly at the man sitting across from him, unable to look away from the strange picture he made.

And he was beautiful. Even missing his usual mourning white and forehead ribbon there was no way Wei Wuxian would have mistaken him for anyone else.

Still, the Lan Wangji with him right now might as well be a different person from the one he knew. He was still as stoic and silent as ever, but there was a warmth in him that he’d never seen before.

People in fandom crave too much an unnecessary angst post-canon CQL that doesn't really reflect the true positive potential of the ending, but here my idea: LWJ hasn't at all the qualities that make him a good Chief Cultivator, from the sect's povs. The conferences are super awkward, Hanguang-Jun is not all accommodating like the Jins and makes the sect leader Yao spend many terrible and hard hours! But the worst? Hanguang-Jun dares to want to form a more open minded cultivation society, the unorthodox tricks are welcomed and there will be lessons when young students could learn in a totally safe way. Unless they are proven to be dangerous and have bad intentions, outsiders are not longer persecuted. And if someone dares to speak just one bad word on the Yiling Laozu, Hanguang-Jun would totally throw his guan right in his face.

Lan Wangji will really make regret the sect leader's choices and Wei Wuxian, totally fine and safe, will be super smug about it.
