Hey there, Tumblr fam! I thought it's time to properly introduce myself. My name is Jan. I am a transmasc 🏳️‍⚧️🎨 artist and immigrant, now based in Belgium.

What I Do: I'm a self-taught artist specializing in MLM (Achillean) book cover art and illustrations. Government is preparing a new law for us, which is... literally ban of every kind of help to transition and adapt in society. People WON'T be able to change their IDs, go through HRT and gender affirmative surgeries. Also russian propagandists started to talk about us much more on TV, they frame us and The Gays as a public enemy #1. Think how many are going to lose homes, jobs and sent to conversion therapists and commit suicide (suicide rates in Russia are high already, and I'm talking about people in general, not just trans people)

To say that I'm devastated is an understatement. I'm in a fucking terror. They just want us dead OFFICIALLY. We have nothing to do in this country anymore, we have to run away and become refugees. Now for realz guys. I want me and 4 people who are very dear to me and are the reason why am I still alive to get out here.

I tried to contact with my blood relatives and ask for financial help (spoiler alert they're an upper middle class), all of them fucking told me "to get therapy" because they truly believe that I'm trans because of internal misogyny. That "I got bullied so much by the boys, so I decided to become like them so they won't anymore" as my mom told me. She is the same person who believes that gay people are funded by The New World Order (TV is that brainrotting folks). "I won't give you anything even if I had it" - my sister told me. Jesus fucking christ I'm so tired of everything.

I’m making this post to raise awareness of the violence and discrimination that has been happening and continues to happen to queer people in the Kakuma camp in northwestern Kenya. Tumblr user transsmith2023 knows the situation well and told me the following,

“The queers are living in a very terrible situation comprised of persecution, torture and discrimination of all sorts that has costed many lives and severe injuries to those who still living.

You can help us through advocating for our equal rights and freedom with the help of both social media platforms, main streams if you have access to them.

You can link us to the queer organisations, personnels so that we can helped.

Private sponsorship program is open, let the queers that side know about our existence. They may be in position to privately sponsor us. Forexample America right know has welcome corps.”

He goes on to say, “Because of our orientation, we are refused jobs, limiting our access to necessary resources. Many of us are homeless and sleep outside, leaving us increasingly vulnerable to violence. We cannot afford food and water, living in poverty even more extreme than the camp’s general population . Many victims of rape and sexual violence contract HIV and other STDs, but cannot afford the medicine which could save their lives.

An Iranian LGBTIQ activist is facing deportation to his home country. The Human Rights Association (IHD) announced on Friday that Elyas Torabiba-Eskandari was detained last Sunday at a Pride parade in Istanbul and taken into deportation custody. After a stay of several hours at the police station in the Beyoğlu district, Torabiba-Eskandari was initially taken to the deportation centre of the Turkish migration authority in Tuzla. In the meantime, he is being held in an identical facility in the border province of Urfa. Elyas Torabiba-Eskandari fled Iran ten years ago together with his mother. According to the IHD, both were victims of state violence, arbitrary detention and torture in their home country. Since their flight in 2013, they have been living in Turkey - however, they do not enjoy full refugee protection there in the sense of the Geneva Convention, but only have so-called conditional refugee status. Nevertheless, a deportation would violate the prohibition of refoulement, i.e. that refugees may not be deported to countries where their lives are in danger. However, the IHD regularly documents deportations of refugees from Turkey to Iran, but also to Syria and Iraq, where their lives are in danger.

LGBTQ+ activists face lethal punishments in Iran. This shouldn't be allowed.

I know it's kind of old news now, but instead of continuing to consume media that's being put out by corporations too greedy to pay writers and give them decent working conditions, my advice?

Read Fanfiction

I know you've probably heard it before (tumblr veterans, I'm preaching to the choir), and maybe you haven't and don't care (all of the incoming reddit and twitter refugees, please keep an open mind, fanfic is fairly common here and not considered as "cringe" as other parts of the internet), but please hear me out. By reading fanfiction, you are doing two (2) important things while also getting your fix for your favorite characters/worlds/tropes.

First, you are essentially boycotting those awful, awful corporations that have driven writers to strike. Like the 07-08 writers strike made unscripted reality TV boom, the writers strike today has stirred up thoughts of using AI to get around hiring writers. In order to keep humans in creative control, we need to consume media made by humans*

Now, secondly, by reading fanfiction, you are supporting small artists and writers. Not only are you supporting the writers of the actual fanfictions, but you also might be supporting their beta reader or their cover artist.

Archive of Our Own (or AO3) is my go-to site. It's an archive (duh) that's non-profit, volunteer run, and the tagging system is nearly flawless, in my opinion. You can find nearly every fandom, every ship, and every trope. They also have an app. It's not as good, but it does offer some accessibility options.

There's plenty of other sites as well, but AO3 works the best for me. I recommend it highly, especially since there is an option to exclude certain tags, which is incredibly helpful in weeding out triggering fanfics.

I know some people have mixed feelings about the strike and how it affects their favorite media, but please remember why they're doing it. Writers deserve better, especially since they work so hard to continue creating your favorites. So, in these trying times, when you miss the world and characters that these writers were creating, turn to the other talented writers who have taken them up and are creating stories with them.

Read Fanfiction

*This isn't just fanfiction, of course, though that is probably the easiest way to do so, but also supporting fanartists, small novelists (idk if you've seen, but 7 Deadly Habits of the Modern Demon Summoner by @animentality is all over my dashboard and I couldn't be happier), smaller podcasts (I recommend DND actual play podcast for those of you who want your action fix), and generally watching indie and small production movies and shows.

TL;DR - don't continue to support corporations during the writers' strike, read fanfiction and support small artists and writers.

Being new on Tumblr after lurking on the queer parts of Reddit really makes me feel like one of those deprived chickens from egg farms being released onto a green pasture for the first time, finally free to live the life it was always meant to live.

Like, of course, there *was* nourishment to be found on queer subreddits, but here I’ve found something I never knew I was missing. Like this is where I belong; Like these are my people. *This* is the natural habitat of funny queer people. There’s just so many of them here. I’m home.

The 519 is located in the Church-Wellesley Village, which is home to Toronto’s 2SLGBTQ+ communities. It serves as a hub for Queer people of all walks of life, offering a wide range of services. The community agency is hoping to highlight the supports available for 2SLGBTQ+ refugees.

Gloria Godwin claimed asylum in Canada in 2019. In her home country of Nigeria, she was faced with a distressing ultimatum: stay and be imprisoned, or leave and be free.
