practical writing advice
part 2
avoid writing in bed if you can. writing in bed is the mind-killer. writing in bed is the little death that brings obliteration. you may think "but i can write AND be cozy" you will get sleepy so fast. 98% of the time when i try to get a nighttime writing session done in bed i go to sleep. maybe 70% of the time if it's an afternoon writing session. also it fucking kills your wrists.
STRETCH before writing. stretch as many parts of your body as possible ESPECIALLY YOUR WRISTS! i have chronic tendonitis in both of my arms from not doing this and it is manageable but it is Not Fun!
plug your phone in on the other side of the room. better yet, plug it in and leave it in another room. better yet, power it off and leave it in another room. "i'll just check one quick thing" do not underestimate the power of the doomscroll.
do a warmup. look up writing prompts (i like one-word prompts or prompts that focus on a general theme as it's easier to integrate into my writing style), set a timer for fifteen minutes, or ten, or five, and go ham. make it shitty or incomprehensible, as long as you make it. create a dump document for all your warmups. i currently have two novels in the works that started as one of these fifteen minute little warmups.
pick your background noise ahead of time if you use it, and look for something long. i listen to 3-hour-long silent hill ambient mixes on youtube dot com.
take breaks. around every 45 minutes, as i'm noticing myself begin to lose focus, i get up, grab a drink, get my blood flowing, and give myself some space to breathe.
sometimes i sit down to write and i think "every atom in my body is averse to doing this right now. i would rather dance barefoot on a bed of nails than open my laptop and start typing." and you know what i do? i go do something else instead. don't force it! it will become a chore.
that being said! write as often as possible. try to write every day. try to write at the same time. don't beat yourself up if you can’t, BUT the more often you write, the more often you'll want to write.
if you're stuck on a scene or a page or a chapter, go back to the last place where you felt like you knew what you were doing and start writing from there. keep a copy of your other writing in case you want to reuse it or refer back!
i don't know if this is something that will be helpful for other people but i start mentally preparing myself for my writing session a few hours ahead of time. i will say to myself, "today, at this time, i'm gonna sit down and write that scene where mina walks out on her book club, and it's going to be awesome and i'm looking forward to it." then, by the time i actually begin, i basically have the whole thing written out in my head and can just put it down to paper. it's a good way to at least kickstart the session !
ok thanks bye

long awaited part three of lowselfesteem!reader and simon
part two
invisible clothes
that’s what you called them, the rags you don when you have to integrate with the general population but you would much rather not be noticed. clothing that is so bland that it isn’t nice enough catch an eye but not hideous enough to catch any negative attention
you had told simon about them once, when he called you out on wearing them every time you stepped out in public, including your dates with him. especially since he knew you had a very elaborate wardrobe with a tailored sense of style
clearly they aren’t invisible enough to hide you from johnny’s guilty eyes from across the store aisle. you sigh when he comes up to you, tapping your shoulder to get your attention. he shifts uncomfortably on his feet
“I know ye probably hate ma guts, lass but ye should ken that simon shut down all of that bet talk after your first date. Ah just bring et up to annoy ‘im.” johnny says, with a nervous chuckles at the end. you don’t laugh alongside him
“okay, fair enough. look, he’s miserable without ye! he comes to the pub just to get pished and mope about how he fucked it all up with ye.” johnny continues, a pleading look in his eyes, “he’s supposed to he coming by to drop off some things of yours tomorrow. just hear him out, please, lass.”
you roll your eyes at him, continuing to grab what you need from the shelves in front of you. not even bothering to look him in the eyes when you finally begin to speak
"why should I? why am I always expected to think of other people even when they hurt me? you and simon didn't think about me or my feelings when you made your stupid bet. neither of you stopped to consider that I was just a person who simply wanted to be left alone." you say with a scoff, "he'll be lucky if I don't slam the door in his face."
johnny shifts on his feet, looking down at the floor since he feels too uncomfortable to look directly at you, "fair enough. take care've yerself, hen."
you bite back tears as you watch him skulk off in the corner of your eye. you stand there for a few more minutes, staring at the stacked shelves in front of you to distract you from the war raging inside of your head
-
it's late at night, nearly midnight, when there's a knock at your door. you let out a sigh, already knowing who was disturbing your doomscrolling at this hour. and when you open the door, you see him. you’re brooding prick of an ex-boyfriend. he at least has the decency to look guilty, like a dog caught ripping up the couch cushions
except he wasn’t a dog, he was the love of your life. and your heart isn’t so easily replaced like a cushion. though he definitely treated it like somewhere to rest his head
“hey.”
you scoff, you’re not sure why. there isn’t anything inherently wrong with what he said but it still annoyed you. he annoyed you. with his stupid stormy eyes and his stupid jokes and freckled shoulders that you used to connect like dots late at night
“just give me my stuff and go, simon. don’t have time for this bullshit.”
he doesn’t flinch. he saw that hit coming, and sometimes you gotta let them swing at you especially when you know that you deserve much worse
the exchange is quick, a box with small memories passed over to you. a couple items of clothing, a book and some toiletries. before you can slam the door in his face, he jams his heavy boot into it
“wait… love, I… there’s somethin’ else. I never gave it to you but it’s yours. got it for you and I’ll never give it to anyone else.”
the glare you give him only falters when he places a small velvet box in your hand, he pauses the speech you can definitely feel coming on. looking at you expectantly to open it. you do, waiting for him to laugh at you when you find nothing in there. ridicule you for even thinking he would consider making you his wife
but all he does it look on solemn, the beautiful ring twinkling as a devastating reminder of what could have been
“I kno’ I ‘ave no right to ask. I wouldn’t insult you like tha’ lovie. you can hate me, I deserve it. but you don’t deserve it. I won’t let you hurt yourself over what I did. you deserve to know the real extent of how bad I fucked up. maybe it’ll help to look at tha’ ring and know that I’ll spend the rest of my life having to know I lost the woman who should be my wife.”
there’s no chance to respond, not like you’d know what to say anyway,
“I’m sorry.”
and then he’s gone.

Your future spouse is someone sharp, agile and they are considered an “old soul.” This is someone extremely intelligent and someone who is more on the introverted side, someone thoughtful, philosophical and spiritual! This person has a very strong masculine energy and is someone stoic, loyal and not afraid to take charge. Someone who has a lot of integrity and morals, someone just. They have been through emotional struggles, and carry that wisdom and experience with grace. Someone mysterious, magnetic, and protective. This is someone with a sharp jawline, symmetrical face, confident posture and his arms are very attractive. They have a lean or athletic muscular body. Their eyes stand out, your fs have very intense eyes, nice shaped eyebrows and a pretty smile. He has a melancholic aura, and it’s someone that people can sense has been through tough moments.

Hello there pile 2!! Your future spouse is someone quick- witted, confident and I’m hearing big dck energyyy!!! ❤️‍🔥 lolll. This is someone persuasive, seductive and a smooth talker. Your fs is someone dominant, protective and assertive. When you guys meet he will be the one to pursue you and he will not give up. This is someone who knows what they want. 😉 This is someone goal oriented, competitive and very driven. They possibly work out and are into sports! This is someone that thrives under pressure lolll, the more challenging the better, this is a go getter fr. Regardless, they are someone artistic, who occasionally likes to paint. Someone with a broad build, defined abdomen, noticeable veins, and I’m seeing eyebrow piercing??? 👀🥵. Their energy makes people turn their heads.
Pile 💋:
Your future spouse is someone deeply reflective and artistic pile 3. This is someone that has carried a lot of burdens emotionally, financially or within family dynamics. This is someone who has “done it all alone.” Your fs has battled with anxiety, and intrusive thoughts. This is someone who has had to confront their darkness and challenge their mind. Despite all of that, they have so much love to give pile 3. This is someone romantic, affectionate, sensual, and could be involved with art, design or likes to cook! This person is your wish fulfillment and you are theirs. They’re proud of how far they’ve made it, and they’re abundant, magnetic and healing. This person wants the family that perhaps they never had. They want true commitment and connection. This person takes commitment serious and dates to marry. They’re very passionate, and they do not hesitate to go after what they want. Your fs has big eyes, their eyes could sparkle, warm smile, delicate hands, dimples, someone who takes care of themselves, skin care, could have nice skin, freckles or moles, some kind of beauty mark. I’m seeing a sun-kissed skin tone, honey skin, very specific with their clothing’s fabric, tattoos, could have a noticeable-meaningful scar, I’m seeing eye smile!!

DICK GRAYSON ── .✦
Playful and Fun-Loving: He adores someone who’s not afraid to be silly. If you randomly burst into song or dance around the kitchen, he’s HEAD OVER HEELSS.
Emotionally Supportive: He falls harder for someone who understands his emotional side and offers support without judgment. Bonus points if you can coax him into sharing his feelings.
Affectionate: Physical touch is everything to him—whether it’s holding hands, surprise hugs, or running your fingers through his hair. He thrives on it.
Independent but Loyal: He admires someone who has their own goals but always makes it clear they’re in his corner. Seeing you succeed makes him proud.
Quick-Witted: If you can match his playful banter, it’s game over. He loves someone who can keep up with his teasing and give it right back.
JASON TODD ── .✦
Stubborn but Soft for Him: He’s drawn to someone who’s tough and stands their ground but melts when it comes to him. That contrast makes him fall harder.
Protective: If you subtly look out for him, like reminding him to eat or wrapping him in a blanket when he’s tired, it shows him how much you care, and he’s done for.
Dark Humor: Jason adores someone who gets his sarcasm and can laugh at his dark jokes without getting uncomfortable.
Courageous: He’s impressed by bravery, even if it’s in small ways—like standing up for yourself or others. He loves seeing your inner fire.

Organized Chaos: If you’re the type who looks like a mess but somehow has everything under control, he’ll be utterly charmed by your efficiency.

Strong Moral Compass: He’s deeply drawn to someone who stands up for what’s right, even when it’s difficult. He admires unwavering integrity.
Loves Animals: Show kindness to animals (especially his pets) and he’ll be secretly touched beyond words. Bonus if you win Alfred the Cat’s approval.
Quiet Strength: He admires someone who doesn’t need to be loud to command respect. A calm, steady demeanor paired with strength is irresistible to him.
Artistic Talent: He’s captivated by creativity. Whether it’s painting, writing, or music, he falls harder if you’re passionate about your art.
Challenges Him: He loves someone who won’t be easily intimidated by him. If you call him out or challenge his views respectfully, he’ll be impressed—and smitten.
BRUCE WAYNE ── .✦
Compassionate Heart: Bruce is drawn to someone who cares deeply for others. Seeing you be kind, even when it’s inconvenient, melts his guarded heart.
Grounded and Calm: He falls harder for someone who brings peace into his chaotic life. If you’re calm and collected, especially in stressful moments, it soothes him.
Loyal and Trustworthy: Loyalty means everything to Bruce. If you’re fiercely loyal and trustworthy, he’ll feel safe in ways he rarely does.
Subtle Strength: He admires quiet, inner strength—someone who doesn’t need to boast but stands firm when it matters.
Sense of Humor: A soft, gentle humor that can get him to crack a rare smile or laugh when he’s brooding pulls him in deeper every time.

Write Like a Director: Crafting a Cinematic Novel (With Examples)
Writing a novel like a movie means propelling your reader through scenes with relentless momentum, slashing through fluff, and ensuring each word drives the plot forward. Trust your readers to connect the dots through dialogue and action, immersing them in vivid, immediate experiences without drowning them in verbose descriptions. Every chapter should feel like a high-octane scene, keeping readers on the edge of their seats, hungry for the next twist, the next revelation. Keep it tight, keep it thrilling. Here are some examples to illustrate each aspect of this dynamic storytelling approach:
Fast Pacing
Chase Through the Alley: Jake sprinted down the narrow alley, the thud of heavy boots echoing behind him. A sharp left, then a right—no time to think, just run. This example thrusts the reader directly into a high-speed chase, emphasizing immediate action and urgency.
Heist in Progress: The vault door creaked open. "Thirty seconds," Maria whispered, stuffing bonds into her bag. The alarm blared. "Move!" The scene conveys a sense of time running out and rapid movement, maintaining a brisk pace with no room for delays.
Dynamic, Fast-Going Plot
Kidnapping Twist: Laura opened her front door to find an empty stroller on her porch. A note inside read: "If you want to see her again, come alone." The unexpected discovery of a kidnapping sets up an immediate and compelling conflict, driving the plot forward swiftly.
Escape Plan: The prison lights flickered. "Now!" whispered Tom. They climbed through the hole, hearing guards’ shouts in the distance. The urgent breakout from prison keeps the plot dynamic and intense, with characters constantly on the move.
Show, Don't Tell
Fight in the Ring: Blood trickled down Max’s face. He clenched his fists, dodged a punch, and delivered a powerful uppercut that sent his opponent to the mat. The physicality and immediate consequences of the fight are shown through actions rather than explained through exposition.
Silent Farewell: Tears streamed down Lily’s cheeks as she handed Jack the letter. Without a word, he turned and walked away, his shoulders slumped. The emotional impact of the farewell is conveyed through the characters' actions and expressions, not through internal monologue or narrative explanation.
No Tedious Descriptions
Quick Change: Sam grabbed the nearest shirt and jeans, pulling them on as he ran out the door, glancing at the clock—he had five minutes to reach the station. The scene moves quickly from one action to the next, providing only essential details to maintain momentum.
Sudden Revelation: In the dim light, Sophie saw the glint of a ring on the thief’s finger. Her father's ring. She gasped, stepping back. The revelation is made through a brief visual detail, keeping the description succinct and impactful.
No Infodump
Mid-Battle Realization: Amidst the chaos, Sarah recognized the tattoo on the enemy soldier’s arm. Her brother. She hesitated, the war raging around her. The revelation about the brother is integrated into the action, avoiding lengthy explanations and keeping the focus on the immediate situation.
Urgent Discovery: Ethan flipped through the ancient book, stopping at a page with a familiar symbol. "It's the same as the pendant," he muttered, pocketing the book and running out. The discovery is brief and directly tied to the plot's urgency, with no extensive background information provided.
Avoid Fluff
Straight to Action: Ben didn’t bother with pleasantries. “We’re out of time,” he said, throwing the bag into the car. “Get in.” The scene cuts straight to the critical moment, avoiding unnecessary dialogue or description.
No Idle Chatter: Emma answered the phone, cutting off the caller's introduction. “What’s the plan?” she demanded, glancing at the clock. The character immediately seeks vital information, eliminating small talk and focusing on the plot's progression.
Tight, Immersive Narrative
Immediate Danger: As the elevator doors slid open, Mark saw the bomb timer: 00:10. He dived for the wires, heart pounding. The imminent threat and the character's swift reaction immerse the reader in the tension of the moment.
Critical Decision: The bridge was collapsing. Anna had seconds to decide—jump or try to save her friends. She took a deep breath and ran back. The character's quick decision-making in a life-or-death situation keeps the narrative focused and engaging.
By applying these principles, you can craft a novel that feels as dynamic and engaging as a blockbuster movie, keeping your readers hooked from the first page to the last.

Could you possibly write something angsty for John Walker where maybe a mission or something goes wrong and he ends up taking out his frustration on reader but apologizes and makes up for it when he notices reader pulling away, I love your writing so much!! Hope you have a good day! 💕
ROUGH NIGHT?
INCLUDES -> john walker x gn!reader WARNINGS -> john is kind of a bitch (predictably) and the reader is kind of a bitch back (which is deserved), hurt/comfort, mentions of blood, injury, and death (missions, yk?), reader is anxious as HELL about john, very vague mentions of sex but nothing explicit WORD COUNT -> 2.8k NOTES -> ugh anon this is EXACTLY the kind of shit i love writing. hurt/comfort is where it's at and this is just so unbearably john-coded in the best way. like yeah! you get it <3 fair warning, this ran away from me REALLY quick. it was supposed to be a short blurb (mostly aftermath and comfort tbh), and then i got carried away. also you can rly see my love-hate relationship w john in this one LMAO. he's my wife but i wanna get into a fist fight with him too, yk?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the tower is always quiet without the team, and bob's presence doesn't do much to keep things lively as he's already a pretty quiet person. they've been gone for nearly two weeks—double the time john told you the mission would take. they're usually radio silent for the duration of their missions, but when a mission takes so long, it's impossible not to worry.
and just as impossible not to wish that john could be safe within the walls of the tower, in your arms at night, or making you dinner.
you spend those weeks with bob going back and forth between checking on him, organizing and reorganizing every corner of your room, and drowning yourself in books and tv—not that it works. john lingers in your mind, images of the worst case scenario dancing in your mind like a taunt. maybe he comes back just fine, or maybe it's in a box. for all you know, he's trapped somewhere between two psychopaths trying to torture him. or maybe the team just can't agree on a course of action.
the silence from them is deafening, only drowned out by the racing of your own heart.
but when they finally come back from some extended mission that john hadn't told you the details of, the usual racket of the tower doesn't return with them. they march pitifully into the floor of the tower that's been dedicated to the living and common spaces. yelena is clutching her side and leaning against bucky for support, whose metal arm is spasming. ava, of course, vanishes immediately upon arrival. in the brief second you lock eyes with her before she disappears for who knows how long, she shoots you a cryptically sympathetic look for someone who looks like they've been through the ringer. alexei limps along, more defeated than you've ever seen him. but john is nowhere to be seen.
"hey, where is he?" you pipe up from where you're sitting on the couch, worry creasing your brow. your book is long forgotten by your side. instead, your eyes keep looking over the group, taking in their injuries and oh, god-
"with the jet," bucky responds, voice worn thin with exhaustion and hint of pain. you watch them leave, alexei's limp worrying you most of all. if he's in bad condition, what does that mean for john?
you bolt upright from the couch, heading off to the jet with a mission of your own. the bleak lighting of these parts of the tower create an endless maze for you to follow. your quick steps echo in the empty hallways—the construction that has been ongoing for the past several months leaving vast parts of the building almost entirely bare.
office rooms, labs, training grounds. all of them are vacant, like the people and equipment meant to be filling them have been stolen from under your nose. even the other living spaces in the tower—entire sections of floors that were once dedicated to an individual team member—are devoid of life. it leaves the building, one that was such an integral symbol of hope and protection, feeling cold.
and it does nothing to help the anxiety that claws at your throat.
by the time you get to the hangar, your pulse is pounding in your ears with enough force that you're sure it's echoing too. you hurtle through the doors of the hangar, desperation coloring every hurried step.
your pace slows when you see him: a lone figure in a wide, vacant room.
john is sitting on a crate by the side of the jet. his helmet in his hands and the shield tossed to the ground. it lies against the ground, discarded and deserted. his suit is covered in dust, debris, and what you think might be blood. with his head down, you can't quite see his face.
"john?" his name is barely above a whisper, and yet it still bounces off each wall. "are you okay?"
john tenses, his hands twitching around the helmet. it takes him a beat too long to respond, and the silence gives you a moment to see him properly. his beard has grown since you last saw him, no longer the neatly trimmed scruff he usually maintains. the bags under his eyes have gotten deeper, too, and there's this haunted look in his eye when he looks up from his helmet. gone is the bright blue you've grown to love. "i'm fine."
"how did the mission go?"
he huffs and stands up abruptly, helmet falling by his side. it rolls away from him, staring at you blankly with its empty sockets. "it was fine." john shoulders past you, his every step pounding against the floor. he hardly looks you in the eye as he leaves.
there's a limp in the way he walks, a favoring of one foot that is more than enough evidence to the contrary—as if you needed anything more.
when bucky finds you later in the kitchen, you're sitting at the table just staring blankly at your laptop. a cruel, steady cursor stares back at you, ever-blinking. bucky works quietly by the stove, apparently unbothered by you until he hands you a lightly steaming mug of hot chocolate—in the very mug john gave you before he left for this mission.
"is he okay?" you ask, staring down at the mug's delicate, flowery pattern.
bucky shrugs. "he's been in the gym for a while." he sits down across from you, running a hand through his hair. "the punching bags are taking a beating, according to ava."
"more than one?"
"apparently." bucky takes a sip from his own mug. in any other situation, the care with which he drinks his hot chocolate would have been endlessly funny. a tiny, delicate mug in the metal hand of a super soldier.
you hum. it's not unusual for john to train after a mission. he takes pride in his skill, after all, drawing all kinds of satisfaction from landing grueling hits against an enemy—and even a place for hits to land, a shield, when needed. but punching bags aren't his go-to, they never have been, especially not to the point of going through several bags. john spars when he wants a fight, but this... this has your worry washing over you in waves once again.
your eyes follow the intertwining swoops of the flowers decorating the mug.
"look, it was rough for us, especially walker," bucky rolls his shoulders back with a sigh. "give him some time, alright? he'll come around." you can't be sure if bucky is trying to convince you or himself. either way, he stays with you. he tells you about the bad intel, about the informant that john had been too rough with, about the regrets that john brought home from the mission. "he'll be okay." and you can only hope that's true.
you don't see john again until hours have passed at that kitchen table with bucky.
when you finally walk into your shared bedroom, you can smell his shampoo lingering in the air even from the doorway. he faces away from you, sitting on the edge of the bed and resting his chin on his hand. and now that he's finally clean of the dirt that he brought home with him from the mission, you can see the bruises littering his back. they range from red to purple to nearly black, and your eyes are glued to them. you're sure that the ones on his chest and stomach must be worse.
"bucky told me what happened," you start, trying to keep your voice gentle. "i- i'm sorry that-"
john whips around, standing from the bed with a stiffness you've only seen in him during the aftermath of the void. his eyes blaze with hurt, backed by a fire built on kerosene and failure. "we aren't talking about this." his hands shake by his sides, knuckles raw and bleeding. bucky's story about the informant swims through your minds sluggishly, lingering. did he punch the scabs back open on the punching bags, or are those new?
"i just wanted to help-" you step forward with your hands out to him in a placating gesture, like he's some kind of wild animal. and with the withering look he gives you, he may as well be.
"yeah, and you never really can, can you?" he laughs bitterly, and his hands twitch again. footsteps pound on the floor, and suddenly, he's close enough to touch, close enough that you feel the adrenaline and shame still pumping through him, "i mean seriously, you sit here in the damn tower, and you hover. you always fucking hover." his voice just gets louder and louder, until you're sure anyone on this floor of the tower can hear him.
"because i care about you, john," you make a strong effort to keep your voice steady, fighting back the thickness wedging itself into your throat with everything in you.
"well, maybe that was your first mistake." his face is inches away from yours when he says it, with nothing but vitriol and venom backing his words.
your eyes burn. "john-"
"just-" he steps back, running a hand over his face, "i just need a fucking break, okay?" as soon as he turns his back to you again, you're out of the room. you swear the slam of the door behind you shakes the entire tower. and if you hear him calling after you, you certainly don't respond.
for the next few days, you avoid john. you spend nights with yelena or bob—thank god for that air mattress you found stashed in a closet months ago. and during the day, you only go back to your room when you know john is going to be out. if it's a break he wants, then it's a break he's going to get.
"he's a brash idiot," yelena tells you when it's her turn to host the movie nights you've been doing with her and bob.
bob, of course, is quick to intercept, "he definitely didn't mean it. right?" he defers to yelena, waiting for her to agree with him. not that she does, but you can appreciate the effort.
john's eyes follow you unwillingly when you're in the same room. they focus on every small movement—the way your eyebrows furrow when you're confused about something alexei says, the dip of you're mouth when you try not to laugh at bucky rolling his eyes at something ava says, the way your hands fidget with the end of your sleeves or your pen when you catch him looking. he feels like a mad man, itching to be by your side as bad as he is. and he can feel yelena laughing silently at him from across the room.
all the while, your heart aches. a break, he said, whatever that means. a break where he stares wistfully at you, eyes heavy with something that you could call sorrow if he hadn't been the one to call for a break.
it isn't until a full four days have passed that he finally works up the courage to apologize to you. it's ironic how he can face the scum of the earth, who do everything in their power to kill him, and yet he starts sweating when he remembers what he said to you. and when he remembers how you took it.
he finds you sitting by one of the windows of the emptier floors, a book in your hand—one of bob's recommendations. this room seems to be some kind of office space, though it's hard to tell with the minimal furniture that's been put in. he lingers in the doorway, taking a moment to watch you sitting peacefully. you don't have your guard up, and god, he misses seeing you like this.
he knocks gently on the doorframe, and you watch him approach with wary eyes. that same guard he was so grateful to see you without returns in full force.
"bob said i could find you here," his voice is hesitant despite how squared his shoulders are, despite how high he holds his head.
you huff. "can't quite keep quiet can he?" the pages of the book flutter when you put it down, the only sound in the room.
silence stretches between the two of you, and john has to look away from your accusing gaze.
"i'm sorry," he starts, shaky and unsure, "you didn't deserve that."
"i know." he winces at the certainty in your statement.
"the mission, it-" john finally looks you in the eyes again, taking a deep breath, "i'm so worried about you, all the time. it just-" his words trail off, like he's still trying to finish the thought. all that planning, and he still can't find a good way to put it all to words.
"yeah."
"i don't want you to get hurt." he flexes one of his hands. the wounds have long scabbed over but are still bruised badly.
"i'll be okay." you shrug, and he almost believes you.
"you can't know that-"
"i'm okay now, aren't i?"
his lips twist into a pitiful half-smile, and you can't help but give him the same look in return.
"when i-" his shoulders fall, "look, i didn't mean-" he curses under his breath, and that nearly gets a smile out of you. "i need a break from this," john gestures vaguely around the room, to the rest of the tower, "not- never from us. i fucked up bad, and i know that."
"okay." every response from you is clipped, tearing his poor attempt at a brave facade to shreds.
"i don't know why-" you give him an icy look that shuts that train of though down immediately. curse you for knowing him so well. "i shouldn't have said it, not like that."
john's heart races in the quiet moments that stretch between you two.
in the blink of an eye, your arms are wrapped around him. he lets out a shaky breath and pulls you close to him. his hands grab for your clothes like he's trying to prove you're really here.
"i'm sorry," he mutters into your shoulder.
"it's okay," you reply gently, threading fingers through his hair.
"you're so perfect, and so- just so close to all of this, and i have nightmares about you getting-" he takes a harsh, shuddering breath, "i don't know what i'd do."
"i know, baby."
you missed him for those days. you missed his hand in yours, you missed his gravely voice in the mornings, you missed his pain in the ass self-assurance. and it's good, so good, to have him back.
you wake the next morning without john in your bed, and if that isn't a rude awakening, you don't know what is. the sheets next to you are cold, and you almost trick yourself into believing that last night was a dream until john walks in with a cup of coffee in that same flowery mug and a tray stacked high with food.
"john?" your voice is still rough from sleep, cracking around the syllable.
"i made you breakfast, baby." with little ceremony, he places the tray of food and the coffee on the bedside table. he does it like it's the most obvious thing in the world, like there's nothing else he would rather be doing.
"huh?" your mind is still struggling to catch up. it's too early, and the bed is, quite frankly, far too cold without him.
"i'm making it up to you," he kisses your forehead, and his hand lingers on your cheek for a beat longer than it strictly needs to.
"thought you made it up to me last night," you stretch your legs beneath the blankets, trying to work out some of the soreness. he chuckles at that, and the corners of his eyes crinkle in that way they do when he laughs.
"oh, that worked, huh?" john sits carefully on the edge of the bed, running a hand over your arm.
"mmm, maybe."
"does breakfast in the bed sweeten the deal?" there's a twinge of uneasiness in his tone matched with a gentle squeeze of your arm.
"only if you get back in bed with me." he smiles at you, all warm and tender.
"i think i can do that."
john finds his way under the blankets with you. his hands are soft when they wrap around you, and warmth bleeds back into the sheets steadily.
"you really should eat that before it gets cold," he mumbles against your neck.
"okay, okay." it's hard not to laugh at where john has situated himself. he's firmly attached to your side, only letting up when you reach for the food. even then, his hold on you shifts just enough to let you move, never quite relenting.

@muffinlance I see your Zuko gets adopted by old sweepy and propose to you Zuko gets adopted by a random scholar at the Ba Sing Se University.
Look in Yuka's defense she has a lot of siblings, and Zuko at a quick glance could pass as her youngest brother. Yes, he should be at home still nowhere near Ba Sing Se, but her siblings end up in the strangest of places so she wouldn't put it past him to show up randomly. Doesn't help she already wears thick lens glasses, and her eyesight is just getting worse from all the reading in the dark she does. Also, she was deep in her research for the paper, and the kid she mistook as her brother was really useful at finding her just what she needed for her paper. He was also apparently an expert on Avatar research, able to spout off all kinds of facts and quotes where he got that research from. By the time she realizes this kid isn't her little brother, she's decided to adopt him anyway, and she will absolutely fight the Di Lee for him. He is her new research partner, and she'll list him as one of her sources if she has to. Then they can't take him as he is an integral part of the development of the culture of Ba Sing Se. Besides, the kid sucks at hiding the fact that he is a fire bender and needs someone to take him under their wing. Half her family are firebenders anyway. She may be small and mousy, but she can be mighty when it comes to her research. She is totally willing to throw hands with the Di Lee if it comes down to it.
Zuko isn't sure what to make of the small mousy scholar he accidentally stumbled upon while trying to find more research on the Avatar. Nor is he sure how he became her research assistant. All he knows is she started calling him Koji and talking to him like she knew him or rather knew this Koji and handing him scrolls to put away and requesting more works on the Avatar some he hadn't read before as Ba Sing Se was the one place he hadn't been able to break into until now. Then he starts spouting off his Avatar knowledge between what he knows of the current Avatar and what he read in old books and scrolls she just jots down what he said without ever once looking up at him. By the time she realizes he isn't this Koji person, she has apparently decided she is keeping him. She escorts him home or to the tea shop when she is done picking his brain for the day or treats him to good food and makes sure he gets enough to not only fill his belly but also to bring home to Uncle. When he gets fired from the tea shop for fighting Jet, she hires him permanently. She even argues that Jet is clearly delusional and needs help not to be carted off by the Culural Police. He is clearly scared so badly he can't see he is safe and that there is no war in Ba Sing Se. So Jet gets an involuntary stay in one of Ba Sing Se's finest mental hospitals with his own personal Joo Dee to look after him. It's around this time that Uncle realizes he may have to fight this young lady for custody of his nephew. At least he is staying out of trouble and expanding his intellectual knowledge.

☆ 18+ minors dni ☆
Frat!Jason Todd who was Vice President of Epsilon Theta Alpha. He had joined the frat when he was a freshmen and even though his rough and tough demeanour suggested otherwise, he was probably one of the most rule-abiding of the frat. But just because he was rule abiding didn’t mean he wasn’t an arrogant little shit
Frat!Jason Todd who began dating you literally a month into freshman year. He waved off your concerns that freshman relationships never lasted and promised then and there in the dining hall that he would put a ring on your finger the moment they threw their caps at graduation
Frat!Jason Todd who knew what he wanted and wasn’t going to let something as simple as ‘not knowing you for long’ get in his way
Frat!Jason Todd who brought you around the frat house so much that you became an integral part. Dick Grayson, the President of Epsilon Theta Alpha, even began to think of you as a sister
Frat!Jason Todd who loved how your relationship grew throughout the years. It didn’t matter if it was freshman year or senior year, he stayed by your side religiously and loved you all the same
Frat!Jason Todd who would get grumpy when he couldn’t see you for a while and everyone in the frat noticed it
Frat!Jason Todd who, for example, stayed at university during winter break freshman year and just pouted and whined the entire time. He called you every day, even though, at that point, you two had only been together a month or two
Frat!Jason Todd who was so relieved when you returned to campus and the next year (and every year after) you would take him home to spend the holidays with you and your family to save yourself from the grumpy boyfriend he would become when separated from you
Frat!Jason Todd who was very proud that your family loved him and he always returned back to the frat ladened with leftovers and sweets
Frat!Jason Todd who was also pretty big on working out. You had been hesitant at first, because of the stereotypical gym bros, but you soon came to appreciate his physique
Frat!Jason Todd who cajoled you into laying either on his back or under him whenever he was doing push ups. If he wanted you to lay on top of him, it was always, “but baby, I need a challenge. Push ups just aren’t doing it anymore. And if I have my darling girlfriend laying on me, then I get snuggles and a workout.” Sometimes, you read while feeling his muscles bend and contract underneath you as he worked, but other times you just held on and pressed lazy kisses to his skin. Whenever he wanted you to lay under him, there was never much complaining from you. You happily laid on the floor and gave him a quick kiss every time he descended. “Love you,” you would mutter and he would grin and reply with his own love
Frat!Jason Todd who also loved to play wrestle. Neither of you ever knew how it would start, but you would find yourself giggling and trying to tackle Jason on the floor. Of course, he would likely let you win, but there were always a couple of times when he would just flip you over and let out a pretend roar before smothering you with kisses
Frat!Jason Todd who didn’t mind that the play wrestling usually ended in hickeys and love bites
Frat!Jason Todd who wasn’t as much of a book nerd as other variants. He maybe was an English minor, but not a major. Whether that was just because he felt as if a frat guy shouldn’t be an English major, or he just preferred his major (pre-law), no one really knew. Jason confessed to you one night, late freshman year, that he wanted to go into law to help those who were growing up like he did. He wanted to fight against big corporations that kept kids confined to Crime Alley and he wanted to fight for the mothers and fathers who were getting swindled out of their homes
Frat!Jason Todd who much preferred to stay up in his room with you then go down to the party raging on the first floor of the frat. It had become a routine: lock the door (you two had learned that the hard way after a wayward couple barged in one time looking for a place to bang. Jason had promptly kicked them out with some well placed swearing and slammed the door behind them), fill the popcorn bowl, and settle in with a movie
Frat!Jason Todd who, however, every once in a while, would venture downstairs with you under his arm and indulge in a little partying. He would pour you a tiny amount of alcohol into a cup if you wished, but never drank a drop himself. Even if he was part of a frat, he was still the same Jason with the brutal memories of parents who hit or screamed when inflicted by alcohol. That didn’t mean that he didn’t enjoy a bit of beer or wine in private with you, but he wanted to stay vigilant around others who were drunk
Frat!Jason Todd who’s favourite thing to do at parties was dance. More specifically, watch you dance. He would stay right next to you, holding your hands or your hips as you sang along to the music. His eyes would never leave you, trailing up and down your body along with his hands. Another activity he liked whenever there was a party was to crowd you into a corner, arms braced by your head and just make out. He loved that bit of voyeurism, but would never take it farther than kisses when it came to you. He was incredibly protective and didn’t want to share you with anyone else
Frat!Jason Todd who was a very inconsistent lover. Let’s explain: he clearly loved you a lot and had told you a million times over. He wanted to pleasure you as such, so sometimes he took his sweet time with you that left you very impatient. Other times, however, he saw a guy checking you out and couldn’t help but bruise your hips as his slammed his own into you later that night
Frat!Jason Todd who, nonetheless, expressed his love in any way he could. Unbeknownst to you, he had bought a ring over the summer of sophomore and junior year and kept it locked in the top drawer of his nightstand
Frat!Jason Todd who, true to his promise, instead of throwing his cap at graduation, had found you in the crowd and immediately got down on one knee
Frat!Jason Todd who was crying when you said yes

Lateral vs Vertical Magic Systems
I… think I’m the only one to use these terms? What I mean by this is different than hard and soft magic, slightly.
Quick recap:
Hard magic systems have rules and strict definition for what can and can’t be done
Soft magic systems go more off vibes, magic exists but the exact mechanics are not important or don’t exist
I think you can have a lateral or vertical magic system that’s either hard or soft, and what I mean by this is:
Vertical magic is where everyone has magic of wildly different flavors but hones them all for the same specific purpose.
Lateral magic is where everyone has magic of the same flavor but uses it for wildly different purposes.
Here’s some vertical magic examples:
Percy Jackson: Nobody uses their demigod powers for anything other than staying alive, by and large, and there’s a huge variety of demigod power possibilities and very little overlap. Whether it’s physical combat or mental, these kids’ powers exist so they can fight gods and monsters.
Naruto: I have not seen most of this show so correct me if I’m wrong but, this is a world where ninjitsu is almost exclusively for combat. While there’s core principles, the heaviest hitters in the show all have wild and exclusive powers or special moves that only they can use that go far beyond skill in martial arts (except for Rock Lee).
X-Men: By nature of it being a comic book, the premise of the world is built in heroes versus villains and how they use their powers to beat the snot out of each other. In X-men specifically, mutants are persecuted and can’t use their powers legally, and have little choice beyond using their mutation to stay alive and “do good”.
Lateral magic systems might be something like:
Tinker Bell: You’re a nature fairy, by and large, and everyone gets their power from the same source, pixie dust, each using their flavor of magic to suit their niche purpose in the environment
Danny Phantom: Yes, he’s a superhero and must have fights, but all of Danny’s super-powered rogues are ghosts, with no exceptions, and everyone is limited to how creatively and uniquely they use the same basic ghost principles of possession, telekinesis, invisibility, and intangibility, + their special trait, but all also suffer the same issue that unites them more than once: They are dead, and good or bad, the living fear them.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Alchemy isn’t limitless, and its practitioners typically focus on one very specific kind of alchemy of their choice with the hard rule that everyone must follow of construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct, and get really, really good at honing it mostly for combat, but also in fields of science, engineering, etc. There is alchemy and only alchemy, and it has rules.
Last Airbender is both! Its bending rules are strictly limited to the four elements and how creative you can get with your element… but it is also a show that heavily features martial arts and how that bending can be used in combat, but it also built a world where bending factors into other jobs, arts, and the very fabric of society.
Why does lateral vs vertical magic matter?
When you’re designing your magic system, you have to think about how this magic would integrate into a world as if its always existed there. Is it hidden magic, like in most urban fantasy? Or is it baked into the fabric of society, like with bending? Does everyone start with the same basic tools and go wild, or does everyone start wild, and all chase the same aspirations?
Whichever you pick does depend on the story you’re telling. A lot of the media I mentioned is action-adventure, which means that all magic, lateral, vertical, soft, or hard, leans toward one thing in the end: Combat.
But beyond combat, how can your magic be used? Are people allowed to practice it without regulations or is it heavily structured by their fantasy society? If it has always existed, how would their would be fundamentally different than ours?

Sunshine
sana x fem reader
fluff
Part two!
She’s a teacher and she flirts, you’re the librarian and you blush!
nayeon, mina, momo, tzuyu and chaeyoung are kids in this! jeongyeon is the integration aide, jihyo is the principal, dahyun is the nurse!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Miss Sunshine! Miss Sunshine! How was your weekend? How are the baby bunnies in your backyard? Are they okay? Are they eating? Are they getting bigger?"
You smile at the excited little voice that bursts into the library. Without even looking up from the books you're shelving, you know it's Nayeon—and that Sana's class must be right behind her.
"Miss Sunshine!!"
The kids started calling you that all thanks to Sana, who can’t seem to stop flirting with you. She always calls you "Sunshine" whenever she sees you, whether it’s in the hallways, the teachers' lounge, or the library. It didn’t take long for the kids to catch on and make it their own, and now her entire class knows you by that name.
Sana’s playful grin from across the room never fails to make you blush, though you try your best to act unfazed. She leans casually against the doorframe, watching you, waiting for your reaction.
"Hey, Sunshine," she calls softly, just loud enough for you to hear but too quiet for anyone else to catch.
You shoot her a quick glance before going back to placing books on the shelves, doing your best to ignore her teasing.
“Miss Sunshineeeee, the bunnies!” Nayeon whines, huffing dramatically as her tiny hands reach up to tug at your shirt.
You can’t help but smile. Leaning down to her level, Nayeon’s face lights up, her two front teeth proudly on display, and her tongue slipping over the gap where she’s lost a canine. It’s a bit of a mess to look at, but she’s so full of joy that it’s endearing.
“They’re doing very well, Nayeon,” you say, grinning at her excitement. “The babies have opened their eyes!”
Nayeon squeals with delight, immediately running over to Momo and wrapping her in a tight hug before tugging at Mina’s arm. Giggling, she excitedly shares the good news about the baby bunnies with her friends.
You chuckle softly, watching the scene unfold. Momo yawns and sighs, her bangs so long they nearly cover her eyes, while Mina listens intently, smiling shyly and nodding as Nayeon chatters away. The contrast between them makes you grin—Momo, always a bit disheveled and sleepy, and Mina, ever so quiet and attentive.
As you shelve the last book, you notice Sana approaching with her signature confidence. She clears her throat, a playful smile on her lips.
“I was thinking,” she starts, leaning casually against the shelf, “how about we grab a quick coffee in the lounge?”
You roll your eyes, smiling despite yourself. “Sana, you have a class to take care of,” you remind her, glancing over at the group of students scattered around the library.
She leans in a little closer, her voice dropping to a soft murmur. “They’ll survive without me for a few minutes. Plus, I could use a little sunshine to brighten my day.”
You bite back a grin, trying not to give her the satisfaction. “You’ve got an entire class of kids depending on you, Sana,” you repeat, your voice light but firm.
She tilts her head, her eyes locking onto yours with a playful gleam. “Yeah, but none of them are as cute as you.”
You try to suppress a smile, knowing she’s pushing all the right buttons. “You’re going to get in trouble, Miss Minatozaki.”
She shrugs, unfazed. “What’s a little trouble when I get to be with you? We’ll keep the library door open, and I promise we’ll be quick. If anything comes up, I’ll be right back.”
This girl…
"Fine."
Sana’s face brightens, and she grabs your hand, pulling you toward the lounge. But just before you exit the library, she pauses and turns back to the group of kids still scattered around.
“Hey, everyone!” she calls out, her voice warm and bright. “I’m just stepping out for a quick coffee. You all behave while I’m gone, okay?”
A few kids look up, and Chaeyoung, with her braces gleaming, raises her hand. “Miss Minatozaki, can we come too?” Her lisp makes the question even more adorable.
She kneels down, her expression softening. “Oh, Chaeyoung, I’d love that! But I need you all to stay here for a few minutes.”
Chaeyoung pouts for a moment but then brightens. “Okay! But we’ll miss you!”
Sana smiles, her eyes shining with affection. “I’ll miss you too! Just make sure to help each other out while I’m gone, alright? If you all do a good job, I’ll have a surprise for you later!”
“What kind of surprise, Miss Minatozaki?” Many little voices all chime in together.
“Ah, that’s a secret! But if I come back and everything’s gone smoothly, I’ll share it with you,” she giggles, standing up and reaching for your hand again.
Their eyes widen in delight. “Okay! We’ll be super good!”
“I know you will! Just keep an eye on each other, alright? I’ll be back before you know it!”
With that, she leads you out of the library and into the hallway. The sounds of the school fade behind you as the two of you make your way to the staff lounge. It’s quiet when you arrive, the room empty, other than the faint sound of the coffee machine humming in the corner.
Sana moves to the counter with a practiced ease, immediately grabbing two cups. “Caramel macchiato for you, right?” she asks, so familiar.
You blink, surprised. “You know my order?”
She gives you a sideways smile, half-shy, half-playful. “You think I haven’t been paying attention?”
“I didn’t think you noticed the small stuff.”
“I notice everything,” she replies, her eyes flicking to yours before lingering just a little too long. There’s something different in her gaze. It’s soft, but with an intensity that makes you shift on your feet.
Sana steps a little closer, the warmth of her body just barely brushing yours. “You know,” she murmurs, her voice lower now, “you’re not as unreadable as you think.”
You blink, caught off guard by the sudden shift. “What do you mean?”
She tilts her head, a teasing smile curling her lips. “I mean, I’ve been watching you. The way you bite your lip when you’re trying to act all composed, the way your eyes flicker when you think I’m pushing a little too far.”
Your pulse quickens, and you can’t quite find the words to respond. Sana notices your hesitation, her grin widening. She takes another step, close enough now that the scent of her perfume—light and sweet—fills the air between you.
“And the way you’re looking at me right now,” she continues, her voice barely above a whisper, “like you’re trying so hard to keep that guard up.”
Your breath catches in your throat as her eyes trace your face, lingering on your lips for a fraction of a second. She leans in, her voice a soft, teasing purr. “You don’t have to pretend around me, you know.”
“I’m not pretending,” you manage to say, though it comes out weaker than you’d intended.
Sana raises an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Oh really? Then what’s stopping you?”
The fact that you flirt with everyone and I’m probably not that special to you.
You open your mouth to answer, but she’s already leaning closer, her breath ghosting against your skin as she speaks again. “You know, I could make it easier for you. If you’d just… let me.”
The room feels warmer. Her fingers brush against yours as she hands you your coffee, her touch lingering, her gaze never wavering from yours. The way she’s looking at you, like she’s daring you to say or do something, makes your heart race.
“I…” You trail off, unsure of how to respond, your mind racing to catch up with what’s happening.
Sana smirks, clearly enjoying your reaction. “See? You’re cute when you’re flustered.”
You’re about to respond—try to salvage what’s left of your composure—but the words are stuck in your throat. The way she’s looking at you, her proximity, the heat of the moment—it’s all too much. Just when you think you might actually combust from the tension between you, the door to the lounge bursts open.
Jihyo storms in, her face etched with frustration, dragging a pale-looking Tzuyu behind her. “Sana!” Jihyo’s voice is sharp, and it immediately cuts through the air between you two.
Both you and Sana jerk back, the flirty atmosphere shattered in an instant. Sana straightens up, blinking as if she’s just been snapped out of a trance. “Jihyo?” she stammers, clearly caught off guard.
“Where the hell were you?” Jihyo demands, her eyes flashing with anger. “Your class has been unsupervised for who knows how long! Tzuyu was sick, and no one was there to help her.”
Tzuyu, standing beside Jihyo, looks unsteady, her skin pale and clammy. She weakly lifts a hand to wave, her voice quivering. “I threw up…”
Sana’s face pales instantly, guilt flooding her features. She rushes forward, concern replacing the flirtatious edge she had moments ago. “Tzuyu, oh my god, are you okay?” She kneels down to Tzuyu’s level, eyes scanning her worriedly.
Tzuyu nods feebly but doesn’t look well. Jihyo crosses her arms, her expression still stormy. “Sana, you can’t just leave your class unsupervised! What if something worse had happened?”
Sana glances back at you, guilt written all over her face. Her confident, teasing demeanor is completely gone now, replaced by genuine worry. “I’m sorry, Jihyo. I—I didn’t think… I’ll take care of this right away.”
Without another word, she turns back to Tzuyu, gently guiding her towards the door. “Come on, let’s get you to the nurse.”
As they leave, Jihyo gives you a hard stare, her disappointment clear. “You too. This isn’t a playground. Don’t let her drag you into this next time.”
You nod, feeling a knot of guilt tighten in your chest as you watch them walk out, the lounge suddenly feeling a lot colder and emptier than before.
~~~
At the nurse’s office, Sana sits on the edge of the desk, watching as Dahyun checks Tzuyu’s temperature. Tzuyu, looking slightly better but still exhausted, is lying down, her eyes half-closed as she rests.
“Her fever’s gone down,” Dahyun says softly, smoothing the blanket over Tzuyu. “She just needs to sleep it off. Her parents will be there soon.”
Sana lets out a sigh of relief, running a hand through her hair. “Thanks, Dahyun. I should’ve been with her earlier…”
Dahyun looks over at her, a knowing smile tugging at her lips. “Mmm, I heard you were… preoccupied.”
She shifts in her seat, trying to play it cool. “I—uh, yeah, I was just grabbing coffee with—”
Dahyun raises an eyebrow, cutting her off. “With her. Again.” She chuckles, clearly amused by the whole situation. “You really couldn’t wait until after work to flirt, huh?”
Sana feels the heat rush to her cheeks, a mix of embarrassment and defensiveness bubbling up. “It’s not like that! I just wanted to—”
“To what? Casually flirt during work hours like you do every single day?” Dahyun teases, crossing her arms as she leans against the counter. “Come on, Sana. If you really want her, you’re gonna have to step up your game. I mean, you’re smooth and all, but maybe she’s not picking up on it.”
Sana stares at her, confused. “What do you mean? I flirt with her all the time! How much clearer can I be? She has to know by now, right?”
Dahyun shakes her head, laughing softly. “Apparently not. If she knew, she’d probably have made a move by now too, don’t you think? Or maybe she’s just oblivious. Either way, you’re gonna have to do more than your usual teasing.”
Sana frowns, genuinely perplexed. “But I’m always complimenting her, giving her all my attention. How am I supposed to step it up?”
Dahyun giggles again, clearly enjoying this. “Maybe stop trying to make her flustered all the time and just be real with her. Ask her out for real. You know, something that’s not in the middle of a workday with your class waiting on you.”
Sana groans, leaning back in her chair. “But that’s my thing! The flirting, the teasing—it’s how I show I like her.”
Dahyun shrugs. “Yeah, well, maybe she doesn’t get it. You might need to try a different approach, or she’s just going to think you’re playing games forever.”
Sana bites her lip, mulling over Dahyun’s words. Could it really be that simple?
~~~
You sigh, kneeling beside the overturned pot, staring at the dirt and wilted leaves scattered on the floor. "We told Tzuyu to throw up in the plant like we’ve seen in the movies!" Chaeyoung’s lisped explanation echoes in your head, and you still can’t quite believe it. Momo, standing beside her, had nodded solemnly like they’d been performing some sort of public service. Who would’ve thought these kids would take movie scenes so literally?
The plant, unfortunately, looks beyond saving. You sigh again, preparing to toss it out when the soft creak of the library door catches your attention.
“Hey, Sunshine,” Sana’s voice calls gently from behind you.
You turn, finding her leaning in the doorway, her usual playful glint missing from her eyes, replaced by something more caring. There’s a tenderness in the way she approaches you, crossing the room to stand by your side.
“They really told her to throw up in the plant, huh?” she asks, crouching down beside you, her gaze landing on the poor mess.
You nod, letting out a weary chuckle. “Yup. Chaeyoung and Momo were the masterminds behind that one.”
Sana sighs softly, shaking her head in amusement. “Kids.” She reaches out to brush a bit of dirt off the pot, her fingers gentle as she surveys the damage. “Looks like we’re going to need a new plant.”
You give her a small smile. “Yeah, this one’s seen better days. I was just about to throw it out.”
Sana glances at you, her expression soft. “You don’t have to do all this alone, you know. It’s recess. I’ve got time to help clean up.”
You blink, a bit surprised by her offer. “Sana, it’s okay, really. You don’t need to—”
“I want to,” she interrupts. She kneels down next to you, grabbing a rag without hesitation. “Besides, you’ve had a day too. Let me help.”
There’s no teasing in her tone, no flirty banter like usual. Just sincerity. It takes you off guard, making you pause for a second longer than you’d like to admit. You’ve always known Sana as playful, but this side of her feels different—softer, more genuine.
“Well, if you insist,” you finally say. “We can clean up this mess together.”
She smiles, warm and gentle, and for the first time today, the chaos doesn’t feel so overwhelming.
Oh, Sana.
~~~
The staff room is filled with murmurs and the low rustle of papers as everyone takes their seats for the meeting. You sit quietly in the corner, mind still lingering on the events of the day. Sana sits a few chairs away, casually leaning back, though you notice her glancing in your direction now and then. You try not to think too much of it, though the air feels tense, like something big is about to drop.
Jihyo stands at the front, her usual composed self, though there’s an unmistakable tension in her expression. When she finally clears her throat, the room falls silent.
“Thank you all for coming,” she starts, her tone a little heavier than usual. “I wish I had better news, but I’ll get straight to the point. We’re going to be receiving significantly less funding this semester.”
The room goes silent for a beat before the groans start. You feel your stomach drop as whispers grow louder. Jeongyeon, sitting a few rows ahead, is visibly tense, her hands clenching at the edges of the table.
“This is fucking bullshit!” Jeongyeon suddenly shouts, standing up and slamming her hands on the table. “How are we supposed to do our jobs with less money? We barely have enough as it is!”
The room shifts uncomfortably at her outburst, but no one dares to disagree. You feel your heart sinking deeper, anxiety creeping up at the thought of how this will affect the library. Jihyo raises her hands, trying to calm everyone down.
“I know,” Jihyo says, her voice firm but empathetic. “I’m well aware of how difficult this will make things for all of us. But we’re going to have to make cuts. I’m reallocating some of the budget to other departments that are in more immediate need.”
Jeongyeon huffs, dropping back into her seat with a frustrated scowl, but Jihyo continues.
“And unfortunately,” she adds, pausing to look around the room, “the library’s budget is going to be completely cut. The funds will be redistributed to cover the gaps elsewhere.”
You freeze.
Completely cut?
It feels like the room closes in around you as the weight of the news settles in. You try to process the words, but they hit too hard, too fast. All you can think about are the kids—the ones who rely on the library for a quiet space, for books, for learning. The ones who look to you for help and guidance. How are you supposed to do your job with no funding?
You want to say something, to speak up, but the shock has stolen your voice. It’s unfair—not just to you, but to the kids. Your chest tightens, but all you can do is sit there, stunned into silence.
That’s when you hear Sana’s voice cut through the tension. “Wait, hold on a second.”
All eyes turn to her as she stands, her expression serious, but there’s a protectiveness in her tone. “Jihyo, you can’t just cut the library’s funding entirely. That’s going to hurt the students more than anything. They need the library—it’s not just a luxury; it’s essential.”
Jihyo meets her gaze, looking torn but resolute. “I understand that, Sana, but we don’t have the resources. Something has to give.”
Sana shakes her head, stepping forward. “I get that everyone’s under pressure, but cutting the library’s budget completely? That’s not the solution. You’re taking away a vital space for the students. You’ve seen how many kids depend on it every day. How is that fair to them? Or to—” she glances over at you, her eyes softening for a moment “—to the people who work hard to make sure they have that space?”
Your breath catches, realizing she’s speaking up for you, for the library, for the kids. There’s a quiet strength in the way she stands, not backing down.
Jihyo looks conflicted, her hands gripping the edges of the table as she exhales. "We don’t have many options right now, but I hear you, Sana. I’ll see if there’s anything we can do to minimize the cuts. But there will still be sacrifices."
Sana nods, her gaze steady. “I just don’t want the library to disappear because it’s too important. We can’t forget what it means to these kids.”
You glance at Sana, a wave of gratitude swelling in your chest. Even in the middle of the mess, she’s still looking out for you. It’s the first time you’ve felt a little bit of hope since Jihyo dropped the bombshell.
Jihyo gives a tired nod, signaling the end of the conversation for now. “We’ll revisit this later. Thank you, everyone.”
As the room slowly begins to clear, you sit there, still processing. Sana walks over to you, a soft, reassuring smile on her face.
“Don’t worry, Sunshine,” she says gently. “We’ll figure something out. I won’t let them forget how important you are to this school. Or the library.”
~~~
It was another bustling day in the library as Sana’s class visited to pick out new books for the upcoming week. You were cataloging items at your desk, the familiar comfort of your work surrounding you. You spotted Sana in the hallway, animatedly discussing projects with Jeongyeon when a group of five little girls approached you, their eyes sparkling with mischief.
“Miss Sunshine…” they whispered in unison, their tone conspiratorial.
You looked up, curious. “What’s going on?”
Nayeon stepped forward, her expression serious. “I think Miss Sana has butterflies for you.”
You raised your brows, intrigued. “Oh really?”
Chaeyoung nodded vigorously as she added, “Yeah! She has a crush!”
You couldn’t help but smile, leaning in a little closer. “A crush, huh? What makes you say that?”
They all nodded eagerly. Mina leaned in, her voice barely a whisper. “She likes you, Miss Sunshine.”
You leaned forward to catch her words, feeling a warm blush creep onto your cheeks. “She likes me?”
Tzuyu chimed in, “You’re her sunshine. I heard it! She told the nurse!”
You laughed, the warmth in your cheeks growing. “Did she send you all to tell me this?”
Momo yawned, brushing her thick bangs away from her face. “She’s weird. When you walk past our class, she always stops teaching, and it’s not like we’ve been bad. She usually only does that when we’re talking over her!”
You shook your head, amusement dancing in your eyes. “I guess she just can’t help but get distracted by her favorite librarian.”
The girls giggled, their joy contagious.
“What’s so funny?” Sana asked, hands on her hips as she walked closer to the desk.
The girls turned to her, their excitement bubbling over. Nayeon quickly pointed at you. “We were just telling Miss Sunshine that you have butterflies for her!”
Sana raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk appearing on her lips. “Oh really? What gave that away?”
Chaeyoung giggled, “You always stop teaching when she walks by! And your face turns red!”
You felt your cheeks heat as Sana leaned in slightly, her voice low and teasing. “Looks like I can’t hide anything from my favorite little spies,” she said, winking at the girls. “But you all have to keep it a secret! You can’t let my Sunshine know that I like her!”
The girls erupted into giggles, and you couldn’t ignore the flutter in your heart.
They giggled and exchanged glances, clearly thrilled by the little secret they were part of. Nayeon leaned closer to you, “Miss Sunshine, do you like Miss Minatozaki back?”
You felt your heart race and glanced at Sana, who was watching you with a playful smile. “Well, she’s… nice,” you managed to say, your cheeks warming.
Sana feigned surprise, placing a hand on her chest. “Just nice? I was hoping for more than that!”
The girls burst into laughter, their excitement infectious. Tzuyu piped up, “You should tell her you like her, too!”
You laughed, shaking your head. “I don’t think it’s that simple.”
Sana stepped closer, her eyes sparkling with something. “Maybe it is,” she said, her tone so incredibly gentle. “You never know unless you try.”
~~~
A few weeks later, the library was dimly lit as you and Sana unpacked boxes of new books, the excitement from the recent funding shift making you both so happy.
Sana leaned in closer, her shoulder brushing against yours as she reached for a book. “You know, I could really help you focus,” she teased, her voice soft and inviting.
You tried to concentrate, but then she pressed a gentle kiss to your cheek, lingering just a moment longer. “You look so pretty when you’re deep in thought,” she murmured, her breath warm against your skin.
Flustered, you replied, “Sana, we shouldn’t—”
Before you could finish, she kissed your neck, sending a rush of warmth through you. “Just a little distraction,” she whispered, nibbling playfully at your ear.
You let out a soft laugh, feeling your resolve melt away. “Okay, maybe just a quick break.”
With a bright smile, she pulled back to meet your gaze. “You really are amazing, you know. So smart and talented. So kind to the kids and everyone around. A literal sunshine,” she said, wrapping her arms around your waist and leaning in to place a sweet peck on your lips, a tender touch that left you breathless.
She stepped back, her eyes sparkling with affection, “And I have to thank those little wingwomen for setting this up. They really know how to play matchmaker, don’t they?”
You smiled, your heart swelling. “They’re so adorable and they probably learned that from you, miss flirt.”
Sana giggled. “Maybe. Now let’s get out of here, beautiful. I want to enjoy the rest of the day with you.”
Hand in hand, you walked out of the school, the cool evening air wrapping around you both.
"Come on, my sunshine!"
platonic yandere batfam thoughts...
how you end up integrating into the family.
I think we often forget how insidious the long-term effects of kidnapping are. Your whole world narrows and you have nothing fulfilling outside of them.
Realistically, how many weeks straight can you do nothing but look at your phone/watch TV? I know we do this every day, but we have school/work/friends/family to provide actual fulfillment and joy. But when you take that away? And have to decide whether you should scroll through monitored social media or talk to your captors?
Especially because the TV doesn't distract from the cold, hard gaze of the surveillance cameras in your room.
Even if you read and craft and cook, it's so difficult to keep your mental health in-tact without having a positive interaction with another human being.
It would start small.
It's morning and Cass smiles at you from across the breakfast table. Not wanting to be rude, you smile tightly back.
Jason wordlessly slides you a book. You take it.
After a few months, you feel slightly more comfortable about taking up space in the manor. Alfred is out of town for the weekend, so you make a sandwich with Tim.
Bruce talks to you about the new scientific breakthrough at Wayne Enterprises and keeps you relatively up-to-date on major world events. You begrudgingly learn more interesting facts than public school has ever taught you.
Soon, you've watched everything good on Netflix. You exhausted your tolerance for social media. You've given yourself headaches reading so much. You've hit an art/writers block like never before because your input has run dry.
With no other source of entertainment, you become more attentive to the Bats.
Of course, you've always watched them out of fear. But as months tick by and you've learned their hearts (and delusions), it's obvious that they would never hurt you. Furthermore, operating within their expectations is easy enough as long as you never challenge them, so the constant danger-sense slowly turns off.
However, because you don't have any outside noise to occupy your mind, drama in the house becomes almost life-and-death to you.
Peace is so fragile, and it's all you have.
Damian and Bruce return from patrol in a rage one night. Damian's furious echoes bouncing upstairs, followed by Bruce's low, indistinguishable scorn.
Fuck, you think. Now your and Bruce's talks are going to be stilted and uncomfortable. Now Damian is going to sulk in your room for hours, unwilling to talk about what happened yet wanting some kind of reassurance.
You can't keep them from fighting, but you want to protect your peace.
When you first arrived in this dreadful manor, you never would have imagined you'd offer them kind words and affection. However it's the only thing you can do now.
There's conflict. The house is tense--your world is tense.
Should you call Dick? He has a day job again, so he can't come over until tomorrow night. It's up to you to ease the tension.
So you do, slowly, with homemade food and Bruce's favorite coffee blend and Damian's favorite hot chocolate. You sit with them individually, shoulder to shoulder (much closer than you would normally sit), and pretend everything is alright. They're surprised but very quick to snap back into a good mood.
The house is suddenly back in order and you did it all by yourself.
And with these vigilantes, conflict is ripe. There's always people coming and going, fighting and playing, and you're unwillingly the most in-tune with the well-being of everyone's relationships.
You protect your peace. You protect the house.
this shit makes me gnaw at my enclosure. if you're fem, it's worse because ✨ stereotypical woman archetype ✨ anyway this has been on my mind because i've been taking care of my baby chicks and cooking dinner most nights, so i'm like 💁‍♀️ i could be a captive house wife click here for my yandere batfam masterlist
As a leader, are there any MBTI types you dislike leading or having on your team?
I dislike people who are incompetent, unreliable, and lack integrity regardless of MBTI type.
In general, though, all the types are pains in my ass in their own special ways:
High Te (ENTJ, ESTJ, INTJ, ISTJ)
Doesn't play well with others; I constantly need to fix the feelings they hurt and cushion their communication so they don't end up pariahs that no one wants to work with.
Bulldozes through people to get things done, requires a 'pause' button and calm hand because they get frustrated easily with things going slow. Sometimes you need to go slow to go far.
Struggles with 'team building' and 'that touchy feely shit'; highly transactional.
(ESTJ & ISTJ) "Mr./Mrs. No", too quick to shoot down ambitious but unproven ideas because it hasn't worked before or will take a lot of effort to accomplish.
(ENTJ & INTJ) Convinced their weird 'reads' into things are correct despite evidence to the contrary staring them right in the face. Not everything has a deeper and hidden meaning.
High Fe (ENFJ, ESFJ, INFJ, ISFJ)
Whines a lot, about everything, and requires a lot of time and energy listening to their feelings.
Needs external validation and requires regular praise/feedback or else they'll assume you're mad at them. The sulking and internal spiraling is a bit much.
Avoids confrontation, mirrors other people's opinions, and requires pushing and pushing to get them to reveal their true opinions and stand their ground. Uses stronger people around them to represent their views (human shields).
Tendency to gossip, can't stay out of people's business and spreads misinformation like wildfire.
A company isn't a family-- not everyone wants to attend your weekend team potluck.
High Ti (INTP, ISTP, ENTP, ESTP)
Always causes more chaos than clarity, requires a ton of work to fix the confusion bombs they drop into groups.
Debates endlessly, needs everything personally spoonfed and explained to them in exhausting detail until they're satisfied or else they can't accept the plan and they won't commit. This slows down everything for everyone.
Flaky, can't hit a deadline to save their lives. Requires check-ins and external pressure (group work) to hit milestones.
(ESTP & ISTP) Out of sight doesn't mean out of mind. There are things that can happen later in the future that we should plan for now.
(ENTP & INTP) Just because you read a book about some obscure topic once doesn't make you an expert. Books =/= reality. Don't be a backseat driver-- do it and prove it.
High Fi (INFP, ISFP, ENFP, ESFP)
Half asses everything they don't enjoy doing because this isn't their passion and their parents made them take this job when they really wanted to do art/music/acting something something.
Struggles to work with people who hold different political views than them; self-segregates.
Terrible at taking constructive criticism and feedback, gets defensive, shuts down, and takes everything personally.
(ENFP & INFP) Highly idealistic to the point they're blind to data that tells them the hard and cold truth, they struggle to manage practical things like resources, time, money.
(ESFP & ISFP) Out of sight doesn't mean out of mind. There are things that can happen later in the future that we should plan for now.
Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun Chapter 122 Analysis - Humanization, Determination & Growth
Tumblr media
This chapter may have been short, but it is a very important and well written, character-focused chapter that is integral for setting up future content.
It begins where we left off in 121. Nene finally reaches the school in desperation, with the expectations that her friends would be right behind her. But that doesn't happen. Nene realizes, just as we have, that she is now by herself.
Tumblr media
This is the first time Nene is truly by herself. Up until now, she always had someone to rely on and support her, whether it was Hanako, Kou, Akane or Teru. But not anymore. Realizing she's all alone, she still calls for Hanako in her mind, the one who would provide her safety and comfort. But he isn't there. No one is. They're dead. As a result, she feels despaired and powerless.
Tumblr media
When she meets Tsuchigomori, multiple contrasts and similarities occur, both paralleling Amane/Hanako. Specifically, parallels with Amane in chapter 14, and parallels with Hanako in chapter 111.
The one who lost hope, and the one who regained it
Her traumatic experiences caught up to her, and she can't speak up on them, a completely normal and valid reaction. Though Tsuchigomori of the original timeline offered her to talk to him when she needs to, Tsuchigomori of the new timeline doesn't know her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both the original timeline's 1969 Amane and Nene are isolated and despaired, without anyone to confide in or support them. They're put in the same position. However, this is where the differences start.
Tsuchigomori knows everything about Amane, as he is his homeroom teacher and has also read his book. However, he had only pretended to show concern and not a single word of comfort. He only tried to pry into his problems, which didn't have any results. This being likely the last conversation he had with Amane before he ended his own life, which filled Tsuchigomori with regrets over not being able to help him. He did not know how to comfort others, only to show worry.
Tumblr media
New timeline Tsuchigomori is different. He doesn't know Nene at all, tried asking her once, but once she saw that she cannot speak up about her experiences, he did not attempt to pry, but provided comfort instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is later revealed to be Amane's influence on Tsuchigomori. When Nene asked him for a morale boost, he performed what Amane had done to cheer up his own students. Comfort is brought through small actions, whether it's through listening, brewing hot chocolate or making them smile with a couple of tricks. It's about being there for them. In a way, Amane succeeded in being a comfort for Nene, even if he wasn't physically there for her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Would have a few words of comfort changed Amane's path? Who knows. But Amane and Nene are quite the opposite. Amane is someone who is very quick to accept reality and adapt to it, no matter how bleak it is. It's why he thought that, after the Severance, Nene would eventually forget about everything and live her life. He thought that, like him, she would accept reality and move on.
But Nene is not like that. She doesn't want to settle for happiness built on other people's suffering and sacrifices... Because that isn't true happiness. That is not the kind of world she wants to live in. It's one of the things Hanako loves about her, because she's different from him, able to take paths he could've never taken.
Tumblr media
So, while Amane made up his mind to "not go anywhere" and gave up on trying, taking his own life, Nene gathered her strength to save everyone from this bleak, miserable present. It's something only Nene is capable of because of her formidable inner strength. The strength to go through the bleakest of moments, to stand up against great difficulties and to retain her kind, selfless self. She is a special, irreplaceable character. She knows her road will be lonesome and incredibly tough, but she gathered the courage and determination to tread it anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dissociation, Acceptance and Humanization
After her horrible experiences in the Red House, Nene found it hard to admit the Hanako she knows and loves is the same person of the Yugi Amane who murdered all of her friends and several other innocent people. Even if Hanako also did bad things, they were always backed up by his intense love and dedication to Nene. The Hanako she knows may not be innocent, but his love and kindness were always genuine.
This holds true the same to Hanako in chapter 111. He found it hard to believe that Tsukasa, the brother he loved so much, would be capable of such horrifying actions. It's easier to convince yourself into thinking that they're separate entities, that it's just a horrible being masquerading as the person you love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Nene soon learns that separating the Hanako she knows from the new timeline iteration of Amane isn't the answer. Because, no matter what one might think, they are still the same person.
Yugi Amane, before his death, was the same caring, understanding and kind person she knew Hanako she loved to be. Learning magic tricks just to make his students smile, letting them freely hang out in the science prep room and listening to them when they have something to take off their heart while offering them a seat and a cup of coffee. He was human.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She knows that Hanako needs to be saved. Yugi Amane needs to be saved from being caught in the Red House's clutches and stripped of all of his love and kindness, leaving him to be nothing but a curse that only exists to kill for "It". This is also visible in the cover page- Yugi Amane isn't represented by the red camellias Hanako is represented by, symbols of his passionate love and dedication. He isn't represented by any flower whatsoever, replaced by the tentacles he uses to kill instead.
Tsukasa is somewhat in the same position in the original timeline. Tsukasa is still the Tsukasa Hanako holds so dear, only possessed by "It", sort of like a parasite. Will Hanako eventually learn from Nene and see the truth aswell?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her selfless personality shines once again, putting herself through a treacherous path just to save everyone. A path she will walk by herself from now on. Hanako is the one who saved her so many times up until now, but this time, she will be the one who will bring him the salvation he needs.
Conclusions
With this chapter, we're heading into the 2nd half of this arc, or another arc, depending on how you look at it. Nene doesn't know what to change exactly and she knows that, so she will likely keep turning back time until she finds what went wrong. It will be an arduous, long and painful road, but her inner strength will overcome every difficulty. I have faith in Nene.
She may not be strong physically, but no matter what anyone says, no matter how many times she has to fall, she's undefeatable. Until her last breath, she will keep standing and fighting for what she loves. That is Yashiro Nene, the protagonist of Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun and the true most powerful character in the series.
