Hi,i hope you all are having a wonderfuld day:)
my english is not that good, this question goes very into fictional territoryi write angel characters, essentially angel in apperance wise ,like humans with wings
and i was wondering ,how would paralysys work on angels when wings are connected mostly to the shoulders from what ive seen?Ive got a character that was paralysed on the level of T11,and i was wondering how it could affect his wings?Or would it not affect his wings at all? What about other spinal injuries? How would certain levels of spinal injuries affect wings?
have a good day and thanks in advance
Hey,
for the purpose of this ask I will be talking about complete spinal cord injuries (since incomplete have such a wide range of presentation it would be more confusing than anything). So just be aware that incomplete SCIs exist as well and are complicated.
A character with T11 SCI would probably have unaffected wings unless they're extremely low. T11 affects the trunk starting from slightly below the belly button, which would be very low for his wings to be there.
The level on which the wings would start to get affected would depend on which vertebrae control them. T8 is around the middle of the back for reference (the vertebrae don't affect the same height at the front and back), while the actual shoulders are C3/C4. So it'd probably be between those.
With that in mind, I don't think wings would be at just one specific level (e.g. T5 being solely responsible for the entire wings) since that's not how the other limbs work. In human arms, different levels of the spinal cord are responsible for different muscles in the same arm, same hand, etc. If you have a C6 SCI, you probably can't use your fingers but can use your arms. I believe wings would work similarly.
Let's assume that the minimum level of wings being affected at all is T8. This could mean that for someone with a T8 SCI, only the muscles on the very end of the wings would be paralyzed, but they could still move the wings. At T5, they can pull the wings in, but can no longer raise them. At T1, they can move them at the base, but not beyond that. Above that, they can't move them at all.
Since there are no winged humans IRL, you can play around with how real disabilities would affect them. Just keep researching since topics such as SCI are practically endless and complicated (but also very interesting).
Thank you and have a nice day as well,
mod Sasza

Hello!
I'll talk about her being quadriplegic and how it might affect her design but leave the actual hairstyle ideas to other mods since I'm not Black (we don't have any Black quad mods at the moment).
"Moderately quadriplegic" is probably too vague to help you figure out what your character could or could not do. I personally haven't seen any quads describe themselves like this, it's much more common to say what level the spinal cord injury is on and potentially whether it's complete or not. "Moderately" could mean either an incomplete injury on any level, or a complete low-level injury (here it'd probably be the former since she's able to walk from my understanding?), which just doesn't really cut it. To go with the main topic of the character's hairstyle, if she's an incomplete C1 then she probably won't be able to move her hair out of her face - and if she's a complete C7, she probably would be able to.
As a general rule of thumb, C5 (or higher) results in less/no bicep function and thus limited/no ability to raise the arms to the person's head (there are obviously exceptions, especially at the lower levels). If she can't reach her hair, it will limit (realistic) design choices. You wouldn't want a hairstyle that requires you to tuck it behind the ear every time you look down if you needed to ask another person to do it for you. As for doing her hair by herself, unless her hands are really mildly impaired it's probably out of the question. You can look up tenodesis, it's the type of movement that quads will do in order to grab things. I never heard of someone braiding their hair like this (not saying it's impossible, I just haven't seen it).
Her level of injury could also affect her design in different ways; e.g. a present trach tube would indicate that she's a C4 (or higher) and complete and a tracheostomy scar would imply that she's probably complete on whatever level, while neither would signal that she's probably lower level and incomplete. It would be a cool detail if you're going for realism.
Since it's a children's book, talking about these specifics is probably too much (unless you're looking to specifically educate about quadriplegia/spinal cord injuries), but it's still something that will be helpful for you going forward. When doing research, a lot of the information that would answer your questions will probably be blocked behind the SCI levels and completeness, so it's good to have it figured out to be consistent.
As I mentioned earlier, "moderate quad" isn't really a description that's used much in my experience. If you want something that's more accurate but not too medicalized, you can try low level/high level quadriplegic and explain the difference. E.g., "[Name A] is a low level quadriplegic, so she can write and draw during art class with a special brace that helps her hold a pencil, just like her friend does. [Name B]'s older sister is a high level quadriplegic, and she needs her dad's help to eat breakfast before school. She uses a different type of wheelchair than [Name A] since she can't use her hands".
To actually go back to the hairstyles, you need to consider what kind of wheelchair she uses. If she has a headrest, she won't be able to have a ponytail in the back since it would be uncomfortable. Same for no hard materials like beads at the height of her wheelchair since a pressure sore on the back would be a nightmare.
I hope this helps,
mod Sasza
Just adding a little bit extra about hairstyles,
(and editing slightly to add: i’m mixed and i don’t speak for all or even a lot of the black experience just a small part of it but definitely not the non-mixed experience)
Like Sasza said, it depends on what kind of wheelchair she uses and her needs in general.
Like mentioned above, beaded hairstyles are common for Black little girls to wear, but if she has a headrest she probably wouldn't have beads or clips at a length where they would put pressure on her head or back with a headrest or backrest because it would cause pressure sores, which you definitely do not want, ans especially not on your head. This could include something like bantu knots; she could have them wherever it doesn't touch her headrest, but again, not in the back of her head.
It also depends on how much she can use her hands and arms. For example, I've had long knotless braids (like waist length), and I have full use of my hands. I've had to tie them back in a ponytail or half ponytail a lot, because they can get in my face often. If she doesn't have the ability to move her hair out of her face when braids obscure her vision, this could get really annoying very very fast! Her braids would probably not be that long, because she is a child and you usually don't put in braiding hair on kids and mostly use their natural hair, but I wanted to put that example just for the practical part of having very movable braided hair it can get in your face way more than unbraided hair. It's heavier and thicker than just a standard hair strand.
Also, most 5 and 6 year olds, abled or disabled, don't do their own hair past a ponytail. It's totally okay for her parents to do her hair, and it makes sense. It also opens up the avenue of maybe she can have cornrows, twists, or braids. If she has a headrest, maybe her hairstyle has the bulkiest part to the sides or top, like afro puffs or side ponytails or space buns or bubble braids (which are very very cute in my opinion), or hairstyles with something like zig-zag parts. I am not a parent (or a child!), but I do see a lot of braided hairstyles and little puffs among the little kids I work with. She could also just have her hair natural and loose, and put something in like headbands or large clips that wouldn't interfere with her mobility or with backrests/headrests if she needed one.
Hope this helps,
mod sparrow
Hi!
I have a couple of Black friends who use power chairs, though they are not quadriplegic. They have to be mindful of hairstyles that would be uncomfortable with headrests (as Sasza mentioned). One of them wears braids, an afro puff, or straightens her hair and wears it down. She gets help styling her hair. The other keeps their hair very short and natural because that's easiest for them to maintain.
Mod Rock
Hi! Your blog is really really cool and an awesome source of information with so much context and detail! I really love your approach of like "don't not do it; research, learn, and do it well"!
So Idk if this is a reasonable question or not but I thought it would be better to ask than not to: So I'm endeavoring to write a kids picture book and in it there's a little girl who's Black with a physical disability, probably moderately quadriplegic, and I was wondering about what kind of hairstyles might be realistic for her to potentially have?
Like I know she could technically have anything that a real person could have, but like I don't want to just pick something out for the character just based on how *I* think somethings looks without having a context I don't have yet if that makes sense?
She's about 5 or 6 and she's able to use her hands but she'll have spasticity in them and be using adaptive equipment, and she can move but she'll be in a wheelchair most of the time, so Idk how that might factor into how she/her parents might kind of style her hair?
(it won't really come up in the story since it's about her first day of school, but like more from a design standpoint)
Also idk if this matters to add but I wouldn't be personally doing the art, I'd probably try and connect with someone to illustrate, but I would like to try and have some pretty concrete descriptions for them to work with when the time comes.
Thanks so much, you're so awesome!!!!
That's a good way to summarize my mentality, and I appreciate you catching that! I do get frustrated when people approach writing people different than them as "well is it yes or no" when that's not what it is. It's "put effort into it or leave it alone". Because many things can be done! We can be in any story! It just has to be done with...wait for it... INTENT!
As for your question, she's an industrious child because I was not doing my own hair at 5 and 6 lol. That's a young age for hair. Maybe a ponytail or afro puff at best. I think it would be okay if you allowed her parents to do her hair, which does lead back to her being able to have any style that she might like. Maybe something with less barrettes and such, since they might fall out and she may struggle to put them back in.
So my suggestion would be to look up hairstyles little Black girls, and go through your options and pick one!

What able bodied authors think I, an amputee and a wheelchair user, would want in a scifi setting:
Tech that can regenerate my old meat legs.
Robot legs that work just like meat legs and are functionally just meat legs but robot
Literally anything that would mean I don't have to use a wheelchair.
If I do need to use a wheelchair, make it fly or able to "walk me" upstairs
What I actually want:
Prosthetic covers that can change colour because I'm too indecisive to pick one colour/pattern for the next 5+ years.
A leg that I can turn off (seriously, my above knee prosthetic has no off switch... just... why?)
A leg that won't have to get refitted every time I gain or loose weight.
A wheelchair that I can teleport to me and legs I can teleport away when I'm too tired to keep walking. And vice versa.
In that same vein, legs I can teleport on instead of having to fiddle around with the sockets for half an hour.
Prosthetic feet that don't require me to wear shoes. F*ck shoes.
Actually accessible architecture, which means when I do want to use my wheelchair, it's not an issue.
Prosthetic legs with dragon-claw feet instead of boring human feet or just digigrade prosthetics that are just as functional as normal human-shaped ones.
A manual wheelchair with the option to lift my seat up like those scissor-lift things so I'm not eye-level with everyone's butt on public transport/so I can reach the top shelf by myself.
A prosthetic foot that lights up when it hits the ground like those children's shoes.
A few additions I remember seeing in the comments on my old account:
holographic prosthetic covers
transformers-style mobility aids that can fold into the shapes of different aids (e.g. a wheelchair that can fold into a cane)
prosthetic covers with pockets/hidden compartments (kind of surprised this isn't a thing already).
find my leg (like find my iphone, but for your legs when you haven't worn them in a while lol)
TLDR: Stop assuming every disabled person would want to be as close to "normal" as possible in your works. Some absolutely would and having options for them if fine, but I rarely see any examples of media showing those of us who don't. start letting amputees in your scifi works have fun with our prosthetics, fix the problems real amputees are already talking about instead of what you think are the issues and make your settings as a whole accessible!

Asexuality in science fiction
A resource guide
Hello! So a while ago, I mentioned a resource guide for asexuality in science fiction. It includes resources for information about asexuality, asexual creators, non-fiction, fiction databases, fiction, writing asexuality, and writing sci-fi. There's a decent amount of aromantic resources included too bc a lot of resources included both. Also, there's a wide variety of types of resources:

Come and check it out! Both high and lower quality versions included:

Realising something while thinking about Star Trek, I think one of the reasons I really related to and looked up to Spock was due to him being mixed-race. The way it intrinsically just changes how you approach the world and view yourself and how others view, being forced to drop part of one culture in favour of the other because of where you live and those expectations. As well as just, how the differences in human and vulcan philosophy, are comparable to cultural and religious differences, and being forced to repress parts of yourself to line up with those views.
One thing I wish there was more of though, is mixed races which aren't human. As someone who is mixed but not white, it does change your experience.
I will never be seen as white and yet because of immigration, I am incredibly western. Most people who hear the word mixed, assume you have to be partially white. I just think it would be valuable to have a mixed race character who wasn't the "usual" mixes. And then to have it actually go into how that affects their relationship with their family and culture, needing to explain themselves constantly, having little medical references and representation, experiencing racism and stereotypes from both sides.
#star trek#spock#mixed race#late night rambling#I just want representation ok? and I am never getting one of my actual race so sci-fi aliens will have to do

Thank you to my friend @ripley-stark for sending me this very insightful essay about the rise of cozy SFF in late 2010s-2020s Western publishing. The author discusses the differences between cozy aesthetics in earlier examples of Anglophone genre fiction and the targeted marketing of books in present day-publishing, and also critically examines the implications of conflict-free stories that do not challenge, or worse, assimilate into existing oppressive structures. Who has the privilege to be comforted by such stories? Escapism for whom? "Cozy" fiction for whom?

sooo i just found out that adult swim is about to air the latest anime from the creator of cowboy bebop & the director of john wick...

i am immediately so invested in the story, been a bebop fan since i was like 11 so this is huge!
and oh good gracias i am obsessed with the character designs!! we have proper black representation, the female characters don't look overly sexualised at all & they all are going to have incredible backstories and character development if it's remotely like bebop was.
also the music nerd in me is going nuts at the three main composers, Kamasi Washington, Bonobo and Floating Points?! I'm in jazz heaven just imagining it.
I have to emphasize how excited I am about Doug's character!! I immediately wanted to hear creators such as FD Signifier's thoughts 🥹🖤

here's the translation (it's googled so forgive me) i got for Doug's character sheet, he looks absolutely gorgeous and I'm so excited to meet him:
Doug, Originally from Nigeria.
He is the brains behind the team and is involved in planning operations.
He also has high physical ability.
He appears calm and collected, but actually has a passionate heart.
He majored in physics as a student and admired Dr. Skinner. He is empathetic, sensitive, and pays attention to small details. And he has a lot of pride.
I'm pretty sure it will debut on April 6 on adult swim's toonami block (USA obvs), I am not from there but I do live on the island of pirates so I'll get to it. I haven't been this hyped for an anime in so long, I hope some of you will enjoy it with me!

Do you know a character you like or love that is autistic or you believe is autistic, even if the show/author etc hasn't actually said so.
We welcome submissions from any genre except what is in our banned media, we allow characters who are good and bad.
Banned media: Community or fan driven/written etc media (Alien Stage, The SCP Foundation and You Could Make a Life).
However, nothing else is banned. You can submit characters from any other media and any genre (good or evil):
~ Books ~ Comedy ~ Horror movies ~ Anime and Manga ~ Western Animation ~ Marvel or DC ~ Foreign/non English TV/media ~ Computer/console games ~ Silent films ~ Indie films ~ media from your childhood ~ Youtube Characters ~ Sci Fi etc ~
Please note, you MUST include evidence or proof or we won't accept the submission. We don't require much evidence, but there needs to something other than "just vibes" or "their whole family is autistic" (we don't know the family my friend).
Proof we do accept include - obsessive tendencies, has no social boundaries, nonverbal communication or delayed language development etc. Or even if creator of said character said so in a social media post etc.
We will only accept submissions through the submission form.
If you submit via Tumblr ask, it will be deleted. The only exception are posts submitted through the form that we require more evidence for.
The spreadsheet of submitted characters is here.
Please note, the spreadsheet has two pages. One page is for accepted characters and the other is for rejected characters. If a character is rejected, we will explain why in the spreadsheet!
Please also be aware that due to the nature of this blog, there will inherently be spoilers, so proceed at your own risk there!
More about us below the cut!
Mod Pixie (she/they): I'm 36 and have been on Tumblr since minimally 2012, so I have Seen Some Things™️.
I love most things nerd and feel like Tumblr is particularly suited to nerddom.
I was diagnosed autistic and ADHD at 33, though I always knew I didn't quite fit in and suspected ADHD for a while. I was always just considered slightly odd, in an Anne of Green Gables way.
Fiction has always been my escape and once Tumblr introduced polls and I found the blogs mentioned, I thought someone should do the same for autistic characters! Full disclosure, it seems someone had the same idea and created a blog, but it never took off.
If you'd like to follow my main blog, please follow @pixiemusing 😄
Mod Sunflower (she/her): Hello there! You can call me Sunflower if you wish. I prefer to remain anonymous on this blog and on @aretheybisexual, but I am the co admin here/there/everywhere. I go by she/her pronouns, 30+, bisexual and am on an NHS waiting list to be diagnosed for autism (2 years and counting). I live in the GMT timezone. Tumblr veteran since 2010 roughly.
Blog mechanics: Feel free to submit ANY character you see as autistic. If you feel the need to clarify whether they are "good" or "bad" rep, feel free in the form! We will accept characters who are "problematic" or from problematic media. We will make sure to tag the media for every character.
I (Mod Pixie) will also sometimes make comment about the submissions well before they are posted. These will be tagged as Pixie Speaks, along with the character and media. The Pixie Speaks tag will also be used for general musings. Just Blog Things will be used for announcements and blog maintenance.
We hope you enjoy and if you have any questions, please DM! Please note that all submissions must be through the Google Form.
For fandoms with more than 2 submissions in a row, the submissions will be broken up with other fandom submissions in between. They may, depending on the number of submissions, be broken up across several days, which may or may not be successive. Polls run for a week.
Thanks again for stopping by!

Hello! I intend to write a main character who is a wheelchair user due to an accident that was fatal to others but not them. I have a problem with deducting the limitations of the disability. Theyre an artist but after the injury they lost some mobility with their hands and since theyre a main character i will give them a romantic interest but im not sure how to make the genitelia function. The hands being limited mobility is important but also their ability to have sex is too. Is this possible or if someone has partial feeling in their hands the genitelia also has problems or can it function fully, would there be other problems regarding sex? How long would the physical therapy period be after the injury? Would they be able to use a regular computer mouse easily or would they need another device? They dont live in an accessible state so what type of chair would they use? Can they transfer from their chair by themselves perhaps? Would they experience chronic pain anywhere in their body or would there be no feeling at all? I want to write the character right so i would appreciate it very much if you answered my ask, thank you
Hey!
It depends on what the accident actually did. I'm gonna assume quadriplegia since that's what it sounds like, but I could be wrong. Since we don't currently have quadriplegic mods I'll just answer for the technical parts but if this is an important character to the story I recommend you get a sensitivity reader if you want to get it right and not just "not medically incorrectly".
Is this possible or if someone has partial feeling in their hands the genitelia also has problems or can it function fully, would there be other problems regarding sex?
Generally speaking, most quadriplegics will have their genitals affected fully or partially depending on the completeness of their injury. However, working 100% as before the injury would be rare.
The one problem that affects all quadriplegics (and some paraplegics) is autonomic dysreflexia, which is essentially a sudden medical emergency caused by a blood pressure rise from too much stimulation. Genital stimulation could potentially cause this and your character would be aware of if they have any knowledge on their condition. Another problem that will affect the extreme majority will be absent/significantly decreased sensation. That doesn't mean that they can't have sex, but they might not feel anything at all there or not feel enough for the entire thing to be pleasurable. For more specific problems, you'd have to consider what set of genitals your character has. People with penises are more likely to cause issues that complicate things a lot (complete erectile dysfunction, inability to ejaculate), than people with a vulva (inability to lubricate). The one exception would be if they have vaginal spasms, which might make penetrative sex physically impossible and/or very painful. Again, this doesn't mean the inability to have sex in general, just requires some changes. Changing focus from genitals to other erogenous zones etc.
You can read about it more here and here. This is also useful but long and uses medical language. Just be aware that it doesn't really factor in trans people and potential differences people on HRT may have.
How long would the physical therapy period be after the injury?
This depends on a lot of things. Depending on what you consider physical therapy, they might do PT indefinitely. SCI is a permanent injury and if it's complete, PT is good to keep it from getting worse (e.g. preventing muscles from contracting), and if it's incomplete then it can also be about potentially restoring more function (how some paralyzed people are eventually able to walk again, it's not a miracle, it's PT). PT can be the in-patient kind that they would probably spend a few months in, out-patient which could be months to a few years, and simple at-home exercises that they could probably do indefinitely (as mentioned), for example passive range of motion exercises.
If the character has specific goals, they will probably go to therapy longer for that specifically. It could be PT, but it could also be occupational therapy. You can read more here or here.
Would they be able to use a regular computer mouse easily or would they need another device?
They probably could. (I recommend this guy's channel for other similar questions like this, he explains them very well).
They dont live in an accessible state so what type of chair would they use?
The type of chair would depend more on their actual needs than the accessibility of the environment. However if you want to specifically factor that in, a light-weight wheelchair would be better so it can be physically moved up the stairs, transported by car, etc.
Can they transfer from their chair by themselves perhaps?
At the start almost definitely no, after some rehab, maybe. If you have your character's level of injury figure out you can search (e.g.) "c6 sci transfer" and see how various people do it. Some can do it by themselves, others need a sliding board, and many can't do it at all. It also depends on factors like weight and age.
Would they experience chronic pain anywhere in their body or would there be no feeling at all?
They would definitely experience at least some chronic pain. It'd be very unusual if they didn't (without being strongly medicated). They'd almost definitely have back pain at the very least.
These two are also not exclusive - you can absolutely have pain in areas without actual sensation (I do). It's because of nerve damage and the nerves firing off incorrectly, so a light touch could be unperceivable, but cause shock-like pain.
I know this wasn't one of the questions, but they could still be an artist as a quadriplegic. They could potentially paint with their mouth or tape a brush to their hand in order to draw.
Hope this helps,
mod Sasza

🪙 I'm always worried that my character looks too white-washed. Let's be fr, Infold's MC is the very definition of it (not that your mc can't be white!! I'm just not!). And even though they offer skin color variances... uhm... I'm having trouble wording this, but basically, "Even if you paint a yellow wall red, it's still the same exact wall. Now it's just red" 🤷♀️.
🪙 During the customization process, I had a lot of trouble trying to adjust MC without having her and her animations look wonky. It took me literally hours before I felt satisfied, and even after that, I ended up going back several times to readjust her.
🪙 Anywaysies, (x2 speed) Today, I am mostly satisfied with her and please tell me she's pretty and that looks at least somewhat asian thank you goodbye.
