Thoughts on Astarion and why he's the most compelling character in BG3 to me right now

I saw a comment earlier that said they felt Astarion is just "needlessly evil" but honestly I see very clear cut motivations in all of his approval choices. Fear for his life. Fear of being controlled. And finding joy, however twisted, in the horrible things that have befallen him and others.

I honestly think one of the best scenes in exploring his character is the goblin party after siding with the goblins in the grove battle, which is likely a much more rare scene since the game pushes you pretty hard towards helping the teiflings. If you side with the teiflings, he spends the party being boisterous and whiny. He complains loudly about the lack of reward, but seems to be mostly just blowing smoke, enjoying complaining. He'll joke around with you and, while making a fuss about it, does seem to enjoying himself to some extent, even if it's just enjoying the fuss he's making. And he raises a good point. If you tell him "just think of the lives we saved" he'll raise the question: did you really "save" anyone? You killed as many goblins in the camp as there were teiflings in the grove. Goblins who were manipulated and controlled by the cult of the Absolute. At the end of the day, you decided that some lives were worth the loss of others. Whether or not you made the "right" decision is up to your interpretation. It gives a glimpse into the way he's come to rationalize the things he's had to do under Cazador's command.

At the goblin party, he's much more subdued. I saw a video saying he was clearly "having a great time" but I don't see it that way at all. His jokes are dry and dark. His words soft. The way we only really see him in scenes where he feels vulnerable, emotionally. His usual flamboyant nature dulled. If you express regret over what you did, he tells you "You did what you had to. Don't be ashamed you did it well." You can really tell how that's a motto he's had to cling to himself. He's not wracked with guilt the way the others like Gale and Shadowheart are, but you can see exactly why. Not because he wanted this, but because he's completely internalized the idea that one can't get what they want. They can only take it. And accept everything else as inevitable. Right and wrong stopped meaning anything to him a long long time ago. There's just life. Survival. And whatever it takes to keep on going.

Everything Astarion does is, in some way, about protecting himself. His blades protect his body. His harsh words and lies protect his secrets. His humor protects his mind. Which is why each of his important character cutscenes have been about having to lower his guard. To trust you with all three of those things.

I'm very interested in seeing what will happen when he truly is faced with the decision to protect himself or to protect those he cares about. I think that will be the defining moment for him and will vary wildly depending on if you've managed to get him to lower his defenses around you and learn to trust.

Second, I REALLY want to know your thoughts on the expression Eddie made when he realized Tommy was gay. It's the same expression he wore when Shannon asked for a divorce, I think. The "I've been reading this entire thing wrong" face. But why do you think he was so stunned by the fact *Tommy* wasn't straight? I think he was realizing that the way he and Tommy interact differs So Much from the way he and Buck do, but I don't know (running on no sleep again this week, forgive me if none of this makes any sense 😅)

I feel like he wasn't as surprised to learn about Buck because he's doing that "first to understand thing" or at the very least had a hunch about it.

So, that expression, that did look like his "you're altering my world view" expression and we have a few options there. There's the funny one, the "was Tommy trying to woo me?" possibility, Tommy did fly him to Vegas for ringside seats, yk? And just having a minute about it lol. But the thing is the episode proved Eddie is deeper in denial than anticipated (rip Eddie fell first essay you will always be true in my heart), but like I said with the whole Eddie is last to see, first to understand, where Buck needs more time, Eddie needs a heavier hit, I don't think just the idea of Buck dating someone would trigger something, he needs to see something or Buck needs to do something, I don't know what rn, I just reblogged a post about the possibility of Buck saying he's in love with him before Eddie is ready to deal with it, and I can totally see that, you can have things ending abruptly with Tommy, Eddie wondering why, Buck being unable to lie to him about it and Eddie being slammed into the realization by something going ridiculously wrong (I will never stop pushing for my Buck drowning in the season finale, so you could do a situation where Buck confesses in some level like saying "Tommy thinks I'm in love with you", something goes wrong, Buck almost dies on him again and he's like oh fuck, and then you have that conflict transfer to season 8 while we wait for them get their shit together) because we all know that "it doesn't change a thing between us" is gonna come back around, same with the Maddie talk, but I also think they need to give the audience some indication that Eddie likes men and/or Buck before Buck can say that. But I just went on a tangent. Tommy. I think Tommy being as similar to Eddie as he was set up to be isn't just about Buck working out the kinks before Eddie, also I can't believe Lou actually said that completely unprompted, but I don't think it ever occurred to Eddie that someone like him could be into men too. Because Eddie spent his whole life doing the right thing in a very twisted way. He got his girlfriend pregnant, so he married her, he joined the army to provide for her and Chris, the show keeps implying he's looking for a mother to Chris, not an actual partner, with these "proper latina women". He loved Shannon, and he thinks he can recreate that. BUT he has a partner, who's not only helping him with life, he's also helping him with Chris, so he checks both boxes. But he's also a man. So he never had a reason to look at it. Until that partner started dating another man, who's extremely similar to him. The pieces for him to be like "oh, that's an option?" are literally all there. He literally said "you and Tommy have it right". Like literally. The seed is planted. The thought is there. At any moment, this man can look at Tommy being that sure of his sexuality and his masculinity and liking a lot of the things he does and also liking Buck, and being like "maybe men are an option" that would lead to an "is Buck an option?" that could give us some nice movement.

I think the question here is who the show wants to reach the "oh am I in love with him" conclusion first. They both have most of the pieces of the puzzle, Buck has more because he has the attraction to men piece, but I maintain that Eddie would be less freaked out about the liking men aspect of loving Buck then Buck would the other way around. It's kinda like we kept writing feeling realization fics where Eddie was totally fine with the idea of wanting to fuck Buck through the mattress but panicked at the idea that he wanted to hold his hand but Buck was the other way around. There's also the problem of what label they are going to give Eddie. Even if most likely it will be just indirectly. I feel like the episode actually even kinda gave us enough to argue that man as demiromantic, but I digress, they doubled down on him loving Shannon, so you kinda can't go the strictly gay route, and he's not stereotypically bi, but obviously who needs stereotypes and it would kinda be nice to see some bi4bi thing that's not stereotypical, and they can go the who cares, he loved Shannon, now he loves Buck route which I think would be the most plausible? Considering they are probably not gonna go there with the demisexuality of it all. And also depends on how attached they want Buck to be to his queer awakening. I think the realization that he's into men and in love with Buck are tied together, but that's a personal opinion, I think his brain would accept the attraction to men and instantly attach that to Buck. But they could very much give Eddie a man to explore things with too. Circling back to the look, I kinda think that was a "I didn't know a guy like Tommy could like men" that's just slightly to the left of the realization of "I didn't know a guy like me could like men" and that could come back to help him get there.

Bucky rejects her and tells her he's taken.

So like have you ever seen of the Benny Hill show and seen the running gag where he takes this short bald dude and just smacks his head like an honest to god boo. I wanna d that to Kryters bc it would be funny.

But to be a little more specific, I like his story the most.

WARNING: A very long discussion about Kryten like genuinely I've been writing this for like genuinely hours read my deranged ramblings at your own risk

It's expanded upon a little more in the novels, and in it there's more information about his time at Nova 5.

Poor bog-bot just wanted to help out the only way he knew how to: Cleaning, and in the process he killed most of the crew and nursed the dying ones to the where he was just straight-up in denial over their deaths to the point where he believed his own internal lies.

He can lie to himself, but not to others. I find that really interesting about him. Makes me want to learn more.

He wants to be a sarcastic little bitch-droid, but outwardly he will always behave like a mild-mannered single divorced 50's housewife with three demanding human/humanoid beings to take care of.

In the books, his existence is touched upon in a... very depressing light.

In Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers, instead of being talked out of deactivating himself, he actually does so.

Only for Lister to bring him back, of course.

And throughout the entire book series he thinks of or nearly deactivates himself, it's more prominent in the books but I ~think~ he says it in the show too, but I can't be sure.

And oh my god Backwards. Backwards my best friend whom I despise.

There's so much Kryten in there, and his little internal insights are interesting to me.

He kills in reverse, for example. And the whole idea of him killing someone is enough to make him want to deactivate himself.

He also, canonically, when he has nothing to do or have any use in that given moment, will sit in his bunk in complete fear that he isn't doing what he was made to do, and the guilt drives him near insane.

I realize I'm only grasping at the books but they make me AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. He's such a. All the Dwarf boys are angstty but I've seen nobody fully touch on Kryten so it might as well be me, it is my SilliconGod given right.

I like how glittery he is in the middle series', it's very subtle but I see it and am transfixed. Bewitched even.

He ism't ugly to me. I mean yeah he's not going to get onto the cover of Vogue [he should though. Can you fucking imagine. Rob or Doug if you need any promotional ideas for those new projects you teased this would be so fucking funny please.]

But his eyes ARE pretty. To ME.

Also may I touch up on the comics because they are wonderful.

There's a few bits about Androids, that robot sitcom he likes, and there's a literal [offscreen] sex-scene, which can mean either:

Even though the demographic is specified for droids, because of the obvious, thinly veiled by humour classism sex exists purely in the show simply to appeal to humans because they're the ones who made it and even though it's a show for robots it's still got to appeal to their masters.

To go against the all robots are asexual allegations Kryten just genuinely doesn't like it because it is Icky to him and he's rather Get It On by cleaning [another canon thing in the books, dirty things, like literal dirty things like unwashed plates and umopped floors, fill him with rapture and make his mouth dry with lust. Also need ye forget DNA and becomes a human where he gets a major chubby while looking at a magazine article for vacuum cleaners...........

And his disdain for cute and conventionally attractive is evident in both the show and the comics.

He thinks Cammiles' appearance [both mechanoid and blob form] to be cute not despite of her imperfections, but because of them, and if that isn't just the cutest thing in the entire world I don't know what is.

He disdains a creature called the Geep in the comics, a autism-creature looking ass bitch that leeches off of human protectiveness with it's adorable fluffiness, to which Kryten is unbothered by, in fact annoyed by.

Same for the episode in the later series where........ uh........... well............. Cat gets pregnantenant and the kiddos use their shapeshifting abilities to look cute [like a hedgehog in a top hat with a little shopping trolley] to which Kryters Could Not Give a Single Fibre optic Fuck about.

He just wants to chill and be a little selfish and honestly he deserves it. He deserves that garden he dreamt of dammit.

Speaking of, it's not mentioned in the books. But he most definitely is hinted to have desires.

In Better Than Life, he's mopping the floor for Cat before Rimmers psyche taints the virtual world, and when the milk turns sour and Cats' Valkirie Sex Slave Army walk out on him seem awfully convenient since in IWCD one of Krytens' favourite scenes in Androids is where a character sets all the prosti-droids free, that combined with his response to Cat makes me think that he definitely willed that to happen himself and Rimmers' mind actually started poisoning he and Cats' part of BTL at the volcano.

And oh my god..... Backwards' ending.

He sacrifices himself for his friends, killing himself, not out of feeling useless, but because it was the only way he could come at use and save them. Or at least he was able to save just Lister and Cat.

The next book, The Last Human, doesn't really grab my eye but theres' a part where Kryten greets this GELF dude [or the dictator of the GELFS or something I don't know] And it's briefly mentioned that he just loves people that go against the system, that he totally would if it wasn't in his stupid code to obey, and it makes him 'shiver'.

He seems to want love, after being more than disappointed to have to tell Cammile to go off the her blob husband Hector [Hector is a fucking Cuck] but he did it anyway, even though the truth was he wanted her to stay, he lied to make her happy.

Because he doesn't see himself highly at all. He demeans himself to such an extreme it makes me want to take his stupid geometric head and kiss it because he NEEDS affection he needs to KNOW WHT IT'S LIKE SO BADLY and I want him to receive that!!!!!!! I want to give him that!!!!!

When I was a little kid I switched the channel to one playing Red Dwarf and all I could remember some years later was Kryten and how silly he was.

I then saw the promotional Red Dwarf AA ads for TPL, and I had no idea what RD even was at the time and thought they were just some weird mascots.

THEN. A little bit later. I was bored as shit with nothing to do and I flicked the channel again. Low and behold, enter El Roboto.

I could just FEEL the crush coming on so I had to literally force myself to stop watching RD and forget about it because god damn it not him anything but him. I even tried to get myself to develop a crush on literally any other character [as you can probably tell by now, and if not well... I think your reading comprehension might need a tad of work] it did not work.

So, he's been present in my life before I even knew his name, [and before I could even spell my own] and by that logic it makes sense why I just adore him as much as I do, it's like that dream you can't remember but the feelings you felt never left.

I joke about hating him but the opposite is true. The complete opposite.

He's my own special little guy, who I rotate in my mind when I'm bored and who's existence eases me when I'm sad.

I have been writing this for literally hours nonstop because I cannot hold back when it comes to talking about him. I'm sure if I thought a little more I could come up with another thousand reasons I love him but I have to go to bed.

📖, 💡?

Two excellent questions. We'll take 'em in order!

📖 My favorite class or playbook from a game.

It's funny, this question. I'm someone who prefers to run games rather than play in them, so I don't really spend a lot of time thinking about classes/playbooks unless I'm designing a game (my current project has had me doing a lot of reading over different playbooks for inspiration). So I'm going to cheat and give you two answers.

The first answer is the Ghelf from TheOriginalCockatrice's game Troupe. The Gelf is a preening pissant, someone petty and small and full of self-importance with a flair for the dramatic. They are hard and bitter but believe themselves to be loving and sweet. They are in so much agonizing denial that my heart hurts to think about it. I think TheOriginalCockatrice did a phenomenal job expressing the ghelf's wretchedness, their vulnerability, and their allure.

The real answer is the one I am embarrassed about, the one I knew was my answer as soon as I read the question, the one class that has stuck with me since I read it as a middle schooler in the Complete Warrior book for dnd 3.5. I feel like an indie ttrpg poser that my favorite class is one from dnd, but let me talk to you about the Warshaper and maybe you'll see why it has been in my bones since I was 13.

The Warshaper is a prestige class, something that doesn't exist in dnd 5e (thank goodness). Prestige classes had to be built into, you had to multiclass in just the right way, do the right in-game things to qualify, take the right character customization options. And some of them were utter garbage and some of them were incredibly powerful. Like many things in 3.x, there was a kernel of a good idea somewhere in there, but the implementation was horrible.

The Warshaper's most onerous requirement was that you had to be able to change your shape, to transform from one body to another. A wizard's polymorph would do, as would a druid's wildshape. As would being a werecreature, as well. And the central premise of the Warshaper class was: what if you could change your body better? Now, this was dnd, so the implementation was all about combat - you can grow more natural weapons, they do more damage, you can rearrange your organs and muscles to make you immune to critical hits, your limbs can extend up to 10ft away from you. But the idea behind the class was immediately compelling, and as a deeply, deeply closeted trans teenager, as soon as I read this class I knew I wanted to be it, in a powerful and personal way. I also, being a deeply, deeply closeted trans teenager, never attempted to build a character that could take the class. I thought about dnd a lot more than I played it, and I made dozens of characters. And I was never brave enough to make someone who could transcend their body-of-birth and take this class, at least not until many years later, in college, when I played my first female character. Playing her was probably the closest I came to realizing I was trans until my egg actually did crack.

So, yeah, the answer I like to that question is the Ghelf. My real answer is the Warshaper.

💡 A game that inspired my own design or creative practice

Here I have many equally true answers. Honorable mention to dnd 3.5 for being so poorly designed that I had to start designing for it to patch up the gaps and salvage something good from it.

The actual answer, well, one of them, is Kazumi Chin's Rogue 2e, which is a love letter to the OSR and storygame ttrpg genres. Rogue 2e is an elegant game. It uses as few rules and mechanics as possible to communicate worlds of potential. Chin's game really opened my eyes to indie ttrpgs more broadly and proved that the adventuring ttrpg experiences I had grown up on could be built in so many more ways than I had thought possible.

Another answer, and the last I'll give for now, is Alexis Smolensk's D&D. Smolensk is a phenomenal writer and his blog (tao-dnd.blogspot.com) is an invaluable resource to anyone looking to run, play in, or design adventure ttrpgs. He has been building his world and expanding his rules for decades with the care and artistry of an expert craftsman. He showed me what adventure games could be, that the skills involved in running them could be deeper than I had ever imagined. I will spend the rest of my life trying to meet his skill level, and I hope that one day people playing in my setting can have half the fun I had playing in his.

So, I've been rolling around in my mind palace this... idea about Liz and Harry basically like, inviting Flash into their relationship (their marriage) some time between when things with Betty dissolve but before he gets with Felicia. You know, when he was having a string of single dates but nothing was sticking and also he was really bad at flirting and it was just. It was bad, okay.

maybe around this same time, things are getting a little stale with Liz and Harry's bedroom activities for unknown!! reasons!! like maybe not being sexually attracted to each other but they don't realize that (COUGH comphet). they figure, okay, we both like Flash, he's around here a lot anyways, he's clearly into both of us, what if we invited him over... see if he's interested... see where things go.

the "can of worms" is that neither Harry nor Liz have probably really entertained the idea that they're.. not straight? Liz might be like "hmm maybe I'm bisexual" but Harry might still be firmly in that "well just because you have a threesome with your wife and your friend who is a guy doesn't mean that YOU'RE bisexual or gay it's just a thing that consenting adults do, RIGHT?" mindset. Denial is more than just a river in Egypt though, etc etc.

Flash is just happy to be there probably the only one in the room who is actually bisexual but he's in the same boat as Harry - just because you have a threesome doesn't mean you're gay or anything, come on now threesomes are just fun, and when your ex and her husband who used to be your roommate invite you for some fun are you gonna say NO? no. that would be rude.

but oh boy when things start heating up (after Normie is Definitely Asleep, mind you)... and maybe Harry realizes he is really into Flash (by god he's not INTO Flash though he just, he wants to be Flash, right, right??) and Liz thinks it's fun to order them around and Flash is Pretty™ but also she's taking mental notes about how into Flash her husband is and how much that doesn't.. really.. bother her..? This was her idea, after all. But she's still going to examine every possible explanation for her feelings except for: "being a lesbian".

TL;DR... LizHarryFlash coming off as bi4bi4bi while actually being three people in various stages of being in the closet is so funny and messy to me that I just absolutely cannot stop thinking about it. Do they love and care about each other? Yes!!! Is it easy? No!!! But that's what's fun about it.

Hello everyone. As you can see, instead of trying to cram this in after work I have decided to get my sleep schedule back on track by motivating myself with an early morning reaction (highly recommend if you would like to get to bed at a decent hour). "Constance faces an old enemy" I wonder who that could be (let's go Garrison/Martina return!!)and "the kids enlist an ally"???. Anyway I'm not wasting anymore time, let's get into it.

21:00- "Magenta" Lol, Constance giving in. HAHA this is so funny to watch her go the opposite way and actually give in to the Whisperer for a second just to defy Garrison. And she's literally showing you how she destroyed it Garrison. She's just destroying you not the whisperer this time. She's breaking your will. OH NOW SHE IS PHYSICALLY DESTROYING THE WHISPERER. Um... what is the old-fashioned way? Is Garrison about to beat up a child?

23:00- yeah, cars with mud would be coming to town from the same place, and likely be entering near each other. "The depression of middle age" I love Constance. Garrison had no idea what she was getting into. I love that by "old-fashion way" Garrison didn't mean beating her up, she meant early psychology old-timey flashcards. " I see a broken angry person". "As a child is this how you pictured your feature self? Life could be better, right?" "Professionally disgraced". Oh my gosh, Garrison went from Curtain to Constance that is a rough transition and she had no idea Constance was like that.

Uh oh looks like Curtain caught wind of the audience's disapproval of this adult romance (honestly I don't really care either way) and decided to do something about it. The kids might be greeted by all the adults brainwashed by the time they reach the compound.

27:00- oh great now he's dressing like a cult member. HE'S COMING WITH US? Yes, they are kidnapping him! That's wonderful. I hope she has a net. "We'll be together? Well that part I like" he really just wants to be with his brother. YES MARLON FINALLY YOU UNDERSTAND. Now it's Jackson and Jillson's turn to shine.

28:30- NOT GARRISON IN TEARS. THIS IS AMAZING. Constance giving her the tough love she needs to get through this mid-life crisis. Oh no Garrison, calm down you're not brain-sweeping anyone. Actually, now that I think about it, what would happen if Constance is in the brain-sweeper? Could she see the memories of everyone who has been in there? Possibly Milligan? Or even Garrison? Reynie, it might be time to bust out your "You don't really want to do this Dr. Garrison 🥺" speech you used on Curtain in season 1.

Anyway it looks like the kids found someone who knows how Curtain's happiness works and might be able to reverse it! Sadly, it looks like she's going through something at the moment, but hopefully, she can pull it together. Would love to see #2 kidnap Curtain, but he'd probably convince Nicholas to let him go. Wish SQ was in this, but I feel like he might be the actor they couldn't get back. I suppose you never know. It looks like we got Jackson, Jillson, Garrison, AND Martina becoming disillusioned by Curtain this season, so maybe they are saving his son turning against him for the big finale. We'll see, but VERY HAPPY the blank expression actually was Marlon, he will not be missed. Until next time!

Hjjhkffgj But I kinda get the appeal. Victor is probably the second most unexplored one off character, even though we've known of his existence since Victoria's debute. ig ppl aren't that really interested in him or even forget he exists (which fair, I think it's good we are limited to one villian white blonde boy to hyperfixate on). And what we know is that he has a terrible inferior complex against Victoria, and probably like her he's also emotionally abused too. Though we know with his bent up frustration that he takes his jealousy and anger to a more villainous degree than Victoria sometimes. Plus there's the fact he was literally created (design and narrative wise) to be a bizzaro TJ like the other members of the family are to the Botsfords. He is the foil to TJ's entire dynamic with Becky (where TJ of course feels inferior to Becky in a lot of ways [cough, Homerun king ep] and he wants to take her down a peg, but he won't try to use or put ppl in danger for it). So I can see where the idea to put them together comes from, afterall the entire episode where we formally meet Victor has TJ gush over him in the beginning, and we know that whenever TJ fawns over a boy it doesn't go well lol. They have a *friends to enemies to lovers energy*, very Tobecky and Bectoria coded (if Victor was like secretly in love with TJ but conveyed it poorly). But I think I like their dynamic as one-sided rivals better, the idea of Victor hating but secretly liking TJ is really funny, and TJ just does not care for Victor, he's got homework to do, leave him alone.

So even though I can see it.... TJOHNSON still sweeps I'm sorry. LOOK, besides them being adorable, they have amazing potential that I only think about. Yeah sure it's not the popular idea of enemies to lovers (I mean it can be, I got some ideas).... but the slow burn friends to lovers and storytelling of denial with longing is strong in them, and I live for that sooo--

Sexuality Headcanon: everyone in revue starlight is wlw in some way! I will admit I haven't thought abt the juniors' labels much until now, so probably questioning wlw and currently unlabeled :3

Gender Headcanon: Stella gives off the energy of someone who has no idea you can just choose your own expressions. once her eyes are open to it I think she'd be absolutely fascinated. unsure if she would explore her own though! maybe? she/her but would definitely love neopronouns! she'd identify as a princess and/or a magical girl 100%

A ship I have with said character: ohhhh my heart is exploding I love Stella and Shiro so much they're literally the pair ever. I love me a good devotee trope, a knight and their princess, and the poor things they make me so worried. I just want them to be okay!!! and maybe this is me being biased as Shiori, but I also have a huge soft spot for Stella and Shiori, it's something I never see talked about that I wish I saw more! I think people forget Shiori is still a junior even if she is an edel. hehe

A random headcanon: there was a post I saw forever ago or tags or smth about what if minku only recognized fumi as the girl who always gets pranked in ichie's vlog videos and so I think it'd be so so funny if most of the juniors barely knew about the previous frau jade which means they wouldn't idolize fumi all that much and that includes stella! she would just think fumi is cool and awkward, "shiorin's silly older sister who brings us snacks and looks mad all the time" skdakjsdskjd another fun one is that stella would probably try to tack an anime trope onto random situations to justify them happening, "this is just like in ... !", or would constantly act and pretend like she's the main character in an isekai or something

General Opinion over said character: Miss Stella!! My favorite real life magical girl. Not much to say that wouldn't have me endlessly gushing and rambling about her tropes and what about them makes me so normal so I'll keep it brief but Stella. Stella, Stella, Stella, she's probably my favorite junior! Maybe it's the Homumado of it all between her and Shiro that does it for me or maybe it's because of my memories as Shiori being so fond, who knows!!! who knows. nothing but good things and opinions about Stella! I wonder what kind of event we'll get with her that gives her a new card like Shiro, Kuina, and Minku recently! I bet it'll be with Ryoko to round them all out omg

A BROTP I have with said character: easily easily easily Kuina and Mei Fan! especially with the new circus event coming out, the parallels between Kuina and Mei Fan and Minku with Yachiyo, Minkuina and Yachimei .... you know, you know. I love that Mei Fan watches out for her and that both have so much to relate and reflect from each other, and I love that the edels have their assigned junior to see themselves in or be a senpai towards. Also, Kuina and the other juniors + Shiori naturally! they're besties!

A NOTP I have with said character: none of the upperclassmen! I don't think I could see Shiro/Kuina much but that's basically it!

A random headcanon: Kuina is a squishmallow collector and enjoyer, she's embarrassed to show anybody outside of Minku but it's something she dedicates a lot of energy to!!! and she never cared a lot for idols until Minku, and now she goes out of her way to keep up with the new trends and news just to talk about it together.

General Opinion over said character: I LOVE KUINA!!!!! That's my little special guy!!!! I feel so responsible over everything that happens to her she's like a little sister to me and I love her soooo much omg, she's probably my favorite junior alongside Stella!! and yes this is my bias but I wouldn't want to leave the others out bc all of the juniors are such good characters!! I cannot wait for the circus event to make it to the world wide server, Sun and I only play in ww but we do keep up with the translations!! that story makes me feel so much in all directions so I'm literally kajshdkhasdhadshd crazy crazy but anyway! firstly cannot let a comment about the structure go without rhapsodising over the efforts of ao3 user eggshellseas who truly saved me!!! i was like "please help me" and she was like "ya, here u go" and then like. it all made sense. her mind!!!! incredible stuff. i am breathlessly, desperately, on tenterhooks (no pressure tho) waiting for her to write some kenny/adam page w gloating vampire adam cole, which is, to me, the platonic ideal of Good Soup.

ok, so. i think the strength of that fic is how strongly anchored it is in nick's point of view. it's a good pov and nick's repression carries a lot of the horror beats because his denial is a solid 1/3 to 1/2 of the creeping unpleasantness in there! like ya adam cole is a vampire eating people but also, what the fuck is up with nick? nothing good, (baybay). however, the exclusivity of nick's pov and his desire to Not See Anything Bad Ever means we really only see a construction of adam that nick is building for himself - until the very end, obviously, when that construction falls apart, and nick is reminded, unpleasantly, that adam is a real person and he has a Real Agenda, he's not just a space upon which nick can localize his ~desire and then avoid it.

the nature of kyle and bobby is a big one i left out, just because nick doesn't care about them! he's not interested! he's interested in if/when they are dangerous to adam/him, but otherwise, he's busy. but i did think about them (and talk about them!). they're not vampires and adam thinks they are in thrall to him because they drink his blood, but they came out on their own and they hang out with adam because they want to. though he probably does have some influence on them, and he wouldn't, like, be totally helpless or without recourse if kyle tried to turn on him. he's got leverage.

i would say the other big one is that nick never makes it explicit that he like, Sexually Desires Adam Cole. and how much adam knows that. (parallel to the depth to which matt desires Adam Page, and the ways in which they have partitioned off desire and allowed it to be separate in that way.) i love repression i think it's very interesting narratively and i think it is an interesting component of the way the bucks present themselves! in this fic the bucks are like pretty carefully tacitly policing each other and allowing like, certain kinds of affection to be made tactile and acceptable whereas other kinds are not. i feel like adam cole knows and thinks it's funny and adam page doesn't know or reads it as something that's a joke about him instead of like, matt sincerely being into him and refusing to accept that about himself.

eggshellseas would probably say how much kenny knows! i think kenny knows a bit more than he's letting on. i like the idea of the bucks thinking of themselves as grandmasters and being super super politicking and proactive, but sometimes they forget that other people are able to move in that way too - the same way they sometimes forget that they're separate people with separate agendas (and separate adams, lmao). kenny i don't think is quite as unaware of whatever it is adam is doing to him as they think: he's also, phantom thread style, comfortable with taking a little damage to make everyone else happy. (especially to let the bucks take care of him. they gotta!!! they love him!!!)

oh also adam is definitely doing a lot of murder. like, they caught him eating a guy one time and that guy was fine? no. he is doing flirt w closeted guys then eat them, and he is doing it En Masse. he's just not doing it at work anymore.

As the person who became your mutual through Kisuke mpreg, I feel it only right that I'm the person who jumps on this grenade. Plus it gives me an excuse to gush about your writing and I love doing that (gotta break out my business suit/briefcase again).

I'll talk about your writing with Mayuri, Akon and Kisuke (just post-tybw, Nemu is still a brain). Honestly the fact that people can breathe so much humanity into Mayuri, an incredibly psychopathic and deranged, otherwise evil, character is insane to me. I really enjoy your characterization of him because it felt really in-character while also heightening the love for Nemu that we never really got to see in the canon story (that's why his sudden protectiveness over her in the Pernida fight didn't land quite right with me, nice as it was; it just came out of nowhere). His extreme denial over Nemu being dead even when he's holding the remnants of her brain is great- absolutely destroyed me, and really helps strengthen the idea that Mayuri loved Nemu so much- more than just as a physical manifestation of his success in the scientific field, but as an actual daughter. I also really enjoy the relationship he has with Akon (Twelfth Division my beloved) and how familiar they are with eachother- you really nail the idea that Akon grew up working under this man, and that Akon was the only person Mayuri really confided in, having experienced similar things to him (the Maggot's Nest, Kisuke's exile, etc). You really nail the closeness in the division too, with how much Akon cared about Nemu (the sibling dynamic was not one that I expected and destroyed me emotionally so thank you for that) and how Kisuke was the first person he ran to get help from when he couldn't get through to Mayuri. The scene with Kisuke in the tent was great too- I loved that little moment with Shinji crying outside of his tent, and Kisuke cracking a (terrible) joke that he all but begs Akon to laugh at because of course Kisuke would joke about his blindness moments after waking up. He's Kisuke. I also love how he knew about Nemu, despite the two of them (seemingly) never having met in the canon story- of course, he and Mayuri weren't having passionate gay sex in the canon story either, so he'd probably have met her sneaking out Mayuri's window at 2am once. I love the confrontation with Mayuri, where you can tell that Kisuke genuinely cares about him, and that Mayuri, for all his aggression, has something of a soft spot for Kisuke, at least. AND THEN Kisuke mentioning Ururu at the end, and how she wants to become a shinigami, and the throughline to your last work about Mayuri & Akon where Mayuri doesn't want Akon to become a lieutenant and have to through his life away for Soul Society; we love callbacks. Mayuri resenting having to become a shinigami is so in-character for him, and honestly makes me wonder why he let Nemu become his lieutenant- I can't imagine she went through the Academy, although that would open up the funny image of Mayuri having to attend parent-teacher conferences and the like. I'm getting off track- the work was really really good!! I really enjoyed how deep the chemistry in the Twelfth Division goes, and how you nailed the weird family-dynamics in play (Mayuri and Kisuke's weird divorced energy, Akon and Nemu having been raised in this environment, the latter having been born in the Twelfth, etc)

Baby Steps (Out of Order) AU!

Okay so this is part 1 of the fic series idea thing I have for my Saved By Your Heart AU. I have three parts in total which will get their own posts- but this was the idea that took over my brain. This is a basically what happened when I came up with the idea that Rei and Endeavor still had their 4 kids but didn't know Endeavor was the father. I had way too much fun considering they are both characters I'm neutral about. I guess I'm making myself care about them rip.

Rei became a model at 18 to help out her family with finances- she gets super famous and is loved by the public- like Meryl Streep (actress)

Endeavor became number 1 when he was 25 and never really struggled with wanting to be #1

This is mostly because since he saw All Might in UA doing his best to be an underground hero with his huge power and it gave him a wake up call on what he actually wanted

Endeavor works hard to save people as the number one hero for 20 years- he and Rei are both 45 now

The gist for the kid situation is that they both slept together 3 times casually in disguise so Rei has her 4 children but thinks most of them have different fathers (dabi and fuyumi are twins)

I actually changed the ages of the kids a bit- the twins are 24, natsuo is 21 and shouto is still 15.

The twins are a lawyer duo! They're working hard already bc they took the internship route. Dabi focuses on helping/protecting kids with powerful/dangerous quirks and fuyumi focuses on advocating for people to get support items when not a hero

Also Dabi was born with white hair in this- I'm making him a twin anyway might as well have them match

Natsuo is quirkless and a med student- he's very happy and just doing what he wants

Shouto still wants to be a hero! Rei got kidnapped and saved by All Might when he was younger and he wants to be like him

THE WHOLE FAMILY LOVES ALL MIGHT

It's so funny they don't really get into the hero scene at all the one exception is for underground hero All Might which the only way you find out he exists is if he saves you

Endeavor doesn't follow famous people and Rei doesn't follow heroes so they just never know about each other's existence until they meet at a charity event the twins throw

Endeavor came to meet up with Dabi to get help with the hawks situation bc the comission still sucks

Rei came to support her kids and ends up sitting next to Endeavor bc of the seating- thr organizers wanted the famous people together to feel more comfortable

Rei and Endeavor hit it off immediately but they're both in denial- they're jaded in the belief that they're too old for a romance at 45 (which is wrong)

Despite being in denial about wanting to date they become friends and make time to see each other a lot after the event (they're both smitten its great)

This actually works out since Rei is a little lonely after Shouto gets into UA and Endeavor is planning on taking less work as a hero as the strain of being the number 1 at 45 is nothing to laugh at (all Might is a God and should not be counted)

They eventually cave and start dating and get pretty serious real quick bc they're both 45 and smitten- they feel like there's no time to lose

Endeavor wants to propose but wants to make sure he understands the father situation so he won't step on any toes and asks Rei about it

Rei thinks the fact ALL her kids came from one night stands is hilarious in the irony and makes it a story time telling him the situations all the kids were made

However on her last story Endeavor is horrified bc he recognizes himself as the man she slept with in the story(the others weren't specific enough)

Cue awkward explanation time where they both freak out and do a paternity test on all the kids just to like make sure (they're both thinking it's just the 1 kid) LITTLE DID THEY KNOW

It's so funny all the kids results are in different envelopes and like each time they open one it's just adding to endeavors kid count

Poor man had 4 children and just didn't know rip

The kids find out and they think it's hilarious- they keep on bullying the two to get married already since they already had 4 kids together might as well
