Incense Coworker Obs (m) by anon73
Tags: allergy, m
Posting this in the adult board just in case.
Tonight I witnessed something at the late night meeting I was forced to attend.
Some background: my coworker S is annoying and arrogant but more relevantly, he’s prone to sneezing fits and has been for as long as I’ve known him. For those of you who like visuals, he’s in his late twenties, is around 180 cm and at first glance has a lanky build, though he’s rather muscular and well-toned. He is widely considered handsome and has long eyelashes and bright eyes and light hair. His nose is larger than average and is upturned, and it just looks sensitive. He doesn’t get sick often but strong scents will set him off and it’s an open secret that he’s photic.
Presumably, one of the higher-ups at the company had lit incense earlier, and it remained burning in the corner and filling the room with a sharp pine or evergreen-like scent throughout the meeting. It made my nose itch for a few moments and I could only imagine what this was doing to him. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see him shamelessly massage the sides of his nose, running the pads of his fingers up and down from the base of his nostrils to the bridge of his nose.
The debriefing started to fade into the background and I had to decide whether to pay attention to what was about to unfurl to enjoy later or on the information that was being shared. And as I tried to decide, he started sniffling, each one sounding more necessary than its predecessor. And then—
“h-hih…hehhh…-ihhdSCHh’iyew!” Sometimes the ends of his sneezes go up in pitch and swell in volume and it drives everyone nuts (including me). It’s unfortunately really hot. He sighed and sneezed again three more times. They were less intentionally dramatic but the hitches in between were especially vocal: “heh!! tSChh’ih! Hhih’tzSCHh! h-hehh…ihtschh!”
One of our coworkers next to him whispered a blessing and sounded somewhat amused. Part of me truly wished it could’ve ended there, even though I knew it was just the beginning, and another part felt bad for him. He might be a pain in the ass, but he was having a public allergy attack in an otherwise formal setting and a quick glimpse revealed that his nose was already taking on a pink tint. I had to remind myself not to stare. I could tell by the way his breathing was becoming more shallow and pronounced that he wasn’t done anyway.
“HEH’SCHhh’iewww!” He sneezed again, and I swear he was dragging it out to be extra long on purpose, perhaps to derail the meeting or perhaps to encourage someone to put out the incense. “Ihhtshh! Ktshh! Ihh’EHSCHhzh! Guh…excuse mbe guys. I think whatever’s burndi’gg is bothering my ndose,” he said. The way his congestion was already audible is still burned into my brain.
Suddenly my pants were too tight, as was my tie, but I did my best to sit in a way that concealed my reaction to it all. The incense was put out and the smell of smoke joined the original scent. I knew immediately without looking that: 1. he had not finished his original allergy attack and 2. this was about to make things worse.
“Do you have a tissue?” he asked our other coworker. She checked her bag and produced a few stray ones. He clapped his hands together and thanked her seriously and one of the higher ups in the company cleared his throat. They all really do not like S. I wouldn’t be surprised if they lit the myrrh incense (that’s what I think it was at least) just to torture him.
He blew his nose as the meeting went on and a few people turned their heads. I tried not to do the same.
“hYSSCH’hyuuh! Hahh’DTZschhiu! IHSHHhh’u!”
I had to memorize how it sounded for later, this took me far too long and half a glass of whiskey for me to attempt to spell it out.
When I glanced over at him, his glasses were hanging off the end of his nose, and the rims of his nostrils were obscured by the sodden wad of tissues he’d kept glued there. I couldn’t keep myself from looking, just tried to react as little as possible like the person next to me. If there weren’t someone sitting between us, I’m not sure that I would’ve been able to make it.
“A’ddy more?” I heard him whisper to our coworker. She had no more tissues, and I honestly felt bad for him. Especially when he sneezed again and tried stifling. It was poorly held back, and I could tell the tissues had outlived their usefulness and could no longer absorb anything.
I quietly offered him the handkerchief from my pocket. And he smiled at me before sneezing directly into it. It wasn’t particularly loud, but it was desperate, as if he’d been holding back until he had something to catch it with. I said bless you under my breath as evenly as possible since he’d been looking at me.
“Thank you [anon73]~” He smiled at me again and I looked away. One of the higher ups called recess and while he left the room, I was unable to leave my spot as I needed a moment.
He didn’t sneeze much more after that, but he did sniffle a lot. The events continued on loop in my head and I figured unless I write it down, I’ll continue to be burdened with it.

im not usually a fan of modern day aus of sff canons because i feel like the setting is as important to the shape and feeling of the narrative as its characters, and stripping that away by definition loses something of what made the original interesting, but ngl one of the best asoiaf fanfics ive ever read was a modern day au crossed over with rear window. i still find myself thinking about that fic sometimes lmao

☕️ thoughts on aus!!
i fucking love aus!!!!! i love reading them and writing them. i think as ive been in fandom longer i generally prefer aus that are more of the "one step to the left" variety, because they feel a little more grounded in the source material (and are more likely to be executed to my tastes characterization-wise), but i also won't say no to a full blown au! especially fantasy or sci-fi, bc im a nerd. or regency/historical, bc im a different kind of nerd. obvi the great joy of any of these is seeing an author flex their world building and characterization muscles so you get to see a different setting but the people you recognize in them!

me writing the Kaine parts of my AU timelines like, "i need to make sure the contract killing background is realistic in my fanfiction about a superhuman clone who can shoot silk cement spikes out of his wrists"
to be fair i do also have a bunch of comic book pseudoscience bullshit in my notes about both the cloning and the spikes so really it's just all in line with everything else
#i am also a big proponent of the whole Internal Consistency and believability vs realism as applied to sff as a set of genres#like is dinosaurs any less realistic than rapid human cloning or nanobot swarms? no. but it isn't tonally consistent#could i allow for resurrection in this setting outside of The Other? i could. is it tonally consistent? ehhh could go either way#similar-ish applies to basically everything in the story from the pseudo science i put behind cloning to kaine's status as assassin#(spoiler alert: he's not much of a badass assassin and i actually decided not to include the assassin's guild at all for my purposes)#(it's not that he's not capable or frightening it's that he is not exactly in a position to do high profile work)#nadia rambles#arghwrites#came in through the window last night#not working on it at this moment of typing i was just thinking about it for reasons i already forgot#for a bit in the story which will probably only be vignettes kaine is essentially doing survival contract work#varying from killing people to scaring them or slashing tires for not a whole lot of money which then mostly goes to like...#heroin and motel rooms while he steals medicine and food and clothes but still barely has anything to his name#that's mostly in between plot stuff that like i said will probably be mostly vignettes#though it does give me space to work outside of ''this is just the lost years''... lol#i still need to write the entire beginning of the houston fic and also some other plot stuff but when i say it's taken me a year#to hammer out plot elements i am not exaggerating. actually still don't 100% have some of the beginning stuff down#i am not interested in just novelizing scarlet spider so there's a lot of pruning involved and thinking about the context of my AU#though it still retains more of kaine's existing 616 plots than *anything* i've written for peter which does kind of bug me#idk writing is hard

Love your writing! I'm curious - a lot of authors keep their fan and published works separate. I always thought it was for legal reasons. What made you decide to keep talking about them under the same account?
it was a Considered Process, certainly, but it boiled down to a few factors:
I, personally, don't mind my fanfic and my published works being known as being written by the same person. I know some authors really prefer the relative freedom & reduced pressure of being able to write fanfic for fun without there being an expectation of it being of the 'same type' or 'same quality' as their published works - which are written for a different audience and with the input of a publishing team - and that is a very legitimate reason to keep identities separate.
crucially: the audience for my fanfic and published works probably has a lot of crossover. at the moment I'm writing queer high-heat romance and SFF, and intend to keep doing so. most of my fanfic also falls under those labels. if I'd wanted to publish any category of children's literature, especially middle grade or younger, I would definitely have wanted a strict separation between my identities for the benefit of their intended audiences.
& frankly, given that the above two things are true: platform and sales! I had a reasonable following on tumblr at the time that my first book was coming out, and felt comfortable yelling HEY IF YOU LIKE MY WRITING... HERE IS SOME MORE OF MY WRITING! in a place where literally thousands of people would see it and perk up their ears and consider reading the books.
& finally: if we see me eventually publish some works which steal worldbuilding details from some of my AU fanfic, we're all gonna be cool about it, aren't we? yes.

6. Write out a text exchange between them and another OC.
7. Who was the last person they called?

13. What do they use as an avatar or profile photo on social media sites?
14. You’ve just stumbled across their tumblr blog! Describe it.
15. Describe their computer. Is it a sticker covered laptop? A high-tech gaming computer?
16. Let’s look at their search history. What are the last 5 things they searched?
17. What’s the last thing they searched in an incognito tab 👀 (doesn’t need to be NSFW!)
18. How many tabs do they have open?
19. What are their most frequently visited websites?

thing is, when i dive so deep into something i love, i can't talk about it. almost at all. like The Hunger Games? my final project for an SFF class was a rewritten ending of the first book bc i legimately could not write an essay about it.
anyhoo. same thing goes for aftg. like i mentioned somewhere, it took me years to manage to make this blog what it is, write fanfic, posts, interact, and hardest of all the funny stuff. but i came around. in the aftermath of this godforsaken miracle curse of TSC, i'm not sure how to proceed bc it's too fresh too close too much. i'm also looking at things mere hours after the end. tomorrow might be different!
all this to say, i'm thinking of going back to my All For The Game Cinematic Soundtrack project, years in the works, bc that does not involve talking! basically, i'm building a soundtrack as if aftg was a TV series, episode by episode, season by season. i'll be adding TSC to that.
the format went through many changes, at first looking like this:
Tumblr media
now it's starting to look like this:
Tumblr media
my playlist is currently 529 songs & 35h04 long! i'm very specific about every little thing possible, but i see it all so clearly, right here in my head, how the scenes go, the angles, the lighting, the beat... ah! how i wish i could produce it for real... i was very lucky to find a kinship in the marvelous @cielalune in how she wrote her breathtaking TLoU AU x aftg fic turn out the lights.
ty jo for the ask xx

Gale and You
A modern Gale SFF AU
Gale/Y/N
Back From the Eternity
You rise from bed with one foot sliding into your slipper and the other lands on the flat carpet. The knocking comes again, urgent. The dark room tells you that it's the middle of the night, a crash of thunder reminds you a storm appeared suddenly off the coast and was meant to drown the small town where you live.
You turn on the lamp by your bed, a quick glance in the mirror slanted against the wall there. Your home is the same cookie cutter home as the rest in the town of Mandrake. A home owned and furnished by Weaving Labs Incorporated, your employer. While a company town wasn't ideal, it let you do your work and it let you meet brilliant, exciting people.
As you cross to the hall, the lightning illuminates the archway to the kitchen and the sliding doors to the small back yard.
You hurry on your toes, concerned that there was an accident at the lab or an emergency in the neighborhood. Your pajamas are comfortable but loose, something for the cool fall evenings of northeastern Massachusetts.
With quick fingers and a rapid heartbeat you turn on the porch light, leaning to look through the pain of glass.
At first you can't take in the person before you. He's so changed from your last meeting.
Gale Dekarios
Gale is braced against the doorframe, his chestnut brown hair hanging down around his face. You can see his breathing is agitated as if he'd exerted himself. When he looks at you, rain streams down his haunted face.
The last time you saw Gale he was hovering in the open hole he'd made in the ceiling of the lab. His skin was glowing blue, his eyes a pure white light.
He'd chosen to leave, to explore the universe with his new powers. It's not like he owed you anything. It had only been some light flirting, a coffee, and a few soft kisses in the break room.
Stolen moments in the long hours of your research into the strange electromagnetic phenomenon of the town of Mandrake Falls.
You open the door, the shock keeping you from forming words. Gale's clothes hang from him in stress. He's no longer glowing. In fact, Gale looks worn out.
“Gale,” You finally say.
“Y/N,” Gale replies. The same honeyed voice emerges from his lips which once whispered close to your ear as his hand cupped your cheek.
If people want to get the steamy stuff, I'll post it.

The Trans Rights Readathon starts tomorrow! From the 22nd to the 29th of March, the aim is to read and uplift books written by and/or featuring trans, genderqueer, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming, and 2Spirit authors and characters. You can find more information on it here!
I'll be donating AU$20 for every book I read to the Gender Centre. Want to help out? Use the comments of this post to pledge a per-book or lump sum - I'll contact you once the Readathon is over.
Here is my book list, including books I already own, books on my TBR I may be picking up, and a list of recommendations of books I've already read. You can find the books I've read for the Readathon under the cut!

Akwaeke Emezi - Content Warning: Everything. Poetry, 47 pages, 8.5/10. I'm not good with poetry (this is going in the Out Of Your Comfort Zone category) but this feels lovely and lyrical and dark and affecting. 25th March.

Long time reader here, bad at tumblr. I noticed a while back that your Shidvadhverse could easily be a modern AU of Lois McMaster Bujold’s Barrayar series, and with this latest revelation that King/Emperor Gregor(y)‘s parental figures had a longstanding booty call I can no longer keep silent. Have you read Barrayar? If not, you would probably enjoy it … but I’m not sure I should recommend for fear of over-influencing your future stories! (Jerry=Ivan, Eddie=Miles(?), Simon=Simon, etc…)
Yeah, a couple of other people have mentioned that! That Jerry resembles Ivan and there's a Gregory who's the ruler. Being fair to Jerry and Ivan, they both belong to a stock character type with a very long history in literature. :D
As far as I'm aware, it's pretty much coincidence. I tried reading Bujold many years ago, but I didn't get very far and my memory of the one book I started is minimal (I'm not sure which one it was). Aside from the fact that it had Miles Vorkosigan as the protagonist, mostly I remember being profoundly frustrated with the book in general, and I know I didn't finish it.
I doubt it's the book's fault; my relationship to the classics of SFF is turbulent. I had similar frustration with The Left Hand Of Darkness, which I did finish but begrudgingly, and more recently the first Murderbot book, which I didn't finish but did get most of the way through. It's strange because when I bond with a genre novel I really bond with it, but they seem to be few and far between and I'm not entirely sure why.
In any case I don't think we need to worry -- given I'm behind on reading books I know I'll enjoy, I don't think I'm going to be returning to Bujold anytime soon. :D
