Jordayla Proposal 5x20 - my (early) thoughts

I was not prepared for the proposal to be Jordan and Layla’s! That wasn’t what I had wanted for them. Jordan had a very long teen marriage plot, in which the show made it clear the whole time that it was a bad idea, even when Jordan was up for it. Getting married at 17: bad idea, wrong, shouldn’t happen; Getting married at 19: good idea (???) What, from the characters’ perspective, not ours, is different? I’ve been thinking about this all week lol, and I’m almost there, but I actually wish the show would explicitly tell me.

Obviously what moved me was Layla’s joy! I can’t get over it. She has opened herself to Jordan completely. There is no fear, she loves and trusts him enough to do something crazy with him. Layla wants someone to stay, and this is the biggest commitment ever, he will stay quite literally until death does them apart. She was missing a family for so long, and now she has one of her own. Not only does Layla feel that it’s a good idea, she believes it! In s3, she couldn’t bear to see Jordan go along with his plans with Simone because it wasn’t his path, and she speaks up, even when she had no stakes. If she thought they couldn’t or shouldn't get married, she would’ve said no. Saying yes is just so fresh for Layla’s character and exactly what I dreamed to see. 

Jordan saying “When I'm with you, I feel like I'm home.” is everything, given his entire life was uprooted recently. He chased an identity in his father, he was always uncertain and insecure, but now he feels at home. “You know who else makes a great pair? Jordan and Layla (…) Hashtag couple goals” - Cute moment but these are real reflections! He thinks they’re compatible, they were able to help their friends. He thinks of Layla as family already, she’s Liv’s sister and Laura’s bonus baby. 

Liv described Jordan: “He’s impulsive, he does things without thinking.” Yes, he is impulsive and he has still matured greatly. I have loved Jordan’s personal arc, and I don’t think he has to lose his character traits to be ‘complete’, nor do I think he needs to be ‘complete’ to get married. I see a lot of Joey/Pacey in Jordan/Layla and there’s a quote from them that goes: “Part of his recklessness is that he’s constantly surprising me and part of his rashness is that he’s intensely passionate.” This quote has never left me and I think it suits Jordayla well. These things about them can be true and make their love great. In a way, I think his decision is commemorative of his dad, but not because it's some product of his trauma. After a tortuous, life-long journey, Jordan and Billy ended in a good place, and football wasn’t their sticking point. They bonded over Jordan’s love and happiness with Layla. Jordan was robbed of more of those conversations but he knew Billy would’ve encouraged him. “Tell Layla she has my approval”, that’s what he’s doing. Maybe his father son prophecy isn’t to be a NFL QB, maybe it’s to embrace the love of his life. 

Jordan and Layla honestly do give me the vibes of a couple that would get married young. I have nothing against young marriage. I love young love in all its sweet, endearing, naive, full force, unprecedented glory. I just can’t stand when its young people trying to be grown ups lol. But in the proposal, Jordan and Layla seem so young and I LOVE it. From Layla's pigtails to the way they’re not super dressed up. They’re not at a bar or a record label event. How giddy they both are, Layla is giggling and gasping the entire time, and Jordan is just bustling around nervously. She lights up at the pretty ring and is excited to put it on, and they can’t get their hands off each other. Beyond obsessed at how he hugs her first, again so sweet and youthful, and a reminder that they are best friends! It’s like he wanted to share his joy with his best friend before he wanted to kiss his fiance, you know?! In general, they are very much a young couple in the way they flirt, get each other flustered, gossip, fight and make up, talk about each other to their friends, giggle and say hi. It's adorable and refreshing to the show, and the scene captured it well. I find the unbridled youngness of their love SO romantic and I like that the writers embraced it. I like that Jordan isn't pretending to be sensible, and I find it hilarious that he splurged on a ring and wanted to assure her before she answered that she deserved a fancy proposal with fireworks. Come on she’s a Material Gworl - they both are. And adorably well-suited, given that Layla is also a Wedding Girl! She knew what wedding dress she wanted like 10 years ago, and Jordan is absolutely a Groomzilla. Good for them, they enjoy weddings and they can have a great one together. It’s not something dutiful, it's not something otherly, it's something great and all theirs!

In developing their relationship, they’ve barrelled through it all. They could not love each other or want to be together, more. People say they haven’t been tested – just because you pass a test it doesn't mean you weren’t tested. Jordayla’s challenges have not been typical either, no break ups or other love interests etc, so it's cool that the next step for them is them figuring out marriage. It's not that they're going to just get whisked away this second and pop out babies. 

They have so much love to share. I love that throughout the hardship of Billy’s death, their love brought some love and light to their friends and family. Their relationship was the only thing that made Olivia smile, their coming out dinner allowed everyone to joke around and be happy for them. They were the light in those dark times. They have so much more love to give each other and everyone else! Asher said at his first wedding (lol) that Jordan was the glue for their friendship, I still believe this and putting this wedding at the centre of their vortex is good for everyone I think.

I enjoyed how it played out on-screen, your suspicions grew throughout the episode and yet none of us actually knew it was Jordan. So fun! I love how the scene cuts from Jaymee saying “...then who was the ring for?” to Jordan proposing. The immediate buzz from seeing them, and such an intimate moment, it was just gorg. It reminded me of 5x04 when their “I’m glad we slowed things down” scene cuts to them in bed. I know some people would’ve liked to see these events unfold but to me the gag of it all is just too good. The first watch experience is too perfect. They have other great slow rewatchable scenes like 5x03, 5x14 etc so there’s a great balance and I wouldn’t trade any of them. 

From a story perspective, I am excited about the potential of this. I think it will speed up our timeline. If we’re fazing out the adult stories now, I’d much rather see this! Definitely want to see all the character-focused stories, their bachelor(ette) parties, in-law scenes, all sorts of things. I’m excited to hear Layla’s voice re: their relationship. We did once in the Homecoming scene telling Simone that Jordan stayed, I want more!

The whole engagement is so unexpected and exciting that it gives me butterflies. I have no choice but to get on board because how is it that this same ship still gives me butterflies?! I felt this way in their “What are we?” era at the end of last season and yet again now in their engaged era. I don’t know how this will play out, but if it was up to me, they wouldn’t get married until late in the season, especially given that there’s likely more seasons to come. I want seeing them up there, having made it from the proposal to the altar, to feel suuuper earned. I hope they stay this fresh and exciting. I do get bored when ships get too far into being the “parent couple” so I hope I don’t live to see that day with my beloved Jordayla. I know the proposal is for a reason, the writers have a vision. By showing them at better and worse (5x11 onwards), in sickness and health (5x18), the build up was stunning and this couple has never failed me before.

It was a day like any other when you would visit ‘FamilyVideo’ in hopes to rent out some cheesy movie , that would cure your weekend boredom when you had nothing to do. But that wasn’t the only reason you would come to visit the place…

As you stepped into the front doors of the shop bringing what you could only guess was the strong smell of cardboard cutouts and air freshener round the shop.

“Nice to see you too, (Y/N)”, you heard the familiar voice of the ever so famous Steve Harrington with a pout on his face as he staked shelves worth of merchandise.

“Hi Steve, do you know where Robin is?“,you asked, cutting straight to the chase. “Woah slow down there, you can at least ask how I’m doing-“ but  before Steve could continue his words the two of you saw the one person you had been hoping to see coming out of the shop’s back room with a stack of films piled up in her hand.

“I swear Steve, if you’re flirting with another customer-”,but along those lines Robin had finally noticed you at the corner of your eye blushing at your presence.

“Hi Robin!" You smiled, turning your attention to Robin as you stood in front of her from the other side of the register table. Sure, you could never tell her, but you had always liked Robin. Her joking sense of humor, the freckles that lined the bridge of her nose ever so perfectly, and how no matter the circumstances she always happened to spark a flame of hope into your little crush.

But, deep down you knew you would never have a chance compared to others like ‘Tammy Thompson’ or ‘Vickie’ . They were all so talented (some sounded like muppets). While you sat behind the scenes, hoping to make the most out of your relationship with her.

“Hey (Y/N), anything catch your interest?”Robin asked, gesturing towards one of the displays of films. But, your thoughts had been so immersed into looking at Robin that you had to avert your eyes from her cute smile as she turned back to you.

“How about this?”,she smirked, spinning towards you with a fresh copy of “Breakfast Club”, in what looked to be newly polished nails.

“Umm-“

“Actually, (Y/N) was looking for that new film we actually just got in.”Steve butted in giving you a wink as he gestured Robin towards the back. “

Um…cool.”,Robin sighed as she shut the backroom door behind her with a loud slam. 

 “I swear, you two are hopeless!”Steve cries out dramatically, laying himself across the shop’s counter. “Well I’m sorry I can’t just woo every girl I meet. Harrington.”,you scoffed leaving the seemingly shy demeanor you had held at Robin’s presence.

“The least you can do is ask her out.''Steve replied as he stuck his tongue out at your remark. 

 In a matter of minutes Robin was back out with a new vhs in hand waving it in the air as if it was a prize she just won for you at the amusement park. Another thing that made you like her more.

“Will that be all Ms.(L/N)”,Robin jokes as she begins to ring up the purchase. “How about a (F/C) for my troubles, Ms.Buckley ”,you said playing along to the scheme.

“That’ll be $16.59”, Robin answered as she slid you your items and you the cash. But little to your notice had the two of you brushed each other’s hands along with a hand grasp that lasted a little too long for your liking bringing goosebumps along your skin. Knocking you completely out of your charismatic demeanor 

While Robin began to ring up the receipt you looked at where Steve was, hoping for another tip. ‘Go on’, was the only thing you were let on to as you turned back to Robin. “Hope you enjoy.”Robin smiled, giving you one last smile as she handed you your receipt. In the heat of the moment you were ready to rush out, hoping to calm the rapid beating of your saddened heart. 

“Hey Robin?”,you said in almost a whisper. “Need something?'' Robin replied, leaning over the register to make eye contact with you that was standing at the front door of the store. “How about we have a movie night… at my place next week. If you don’t mind?”,

It was an awkward few seconds of silence, as you could already feel the rush of rejection coming your way. Until,

“Is Thursday cool?”Robin commented with a heep of redness that was building up along her pale face but was too far for you to notice in your nervous state.

“Sure!”,you shouted quickly as you waved a last ‘goodbye’ and sped out into the cool spring air of Hawkins.

The movie date night

There you were trudging back and forth through your living room holding back the overwhelming amount of anxiety you felt as you waited for Robin.

“Popcorn?Check.

Blankets?Check.

The Labyrinth?Check.”,

You whispered to yourself making sure everything was set up for what was to come. But, no matter how much you wanted to pretend you were prepared you totally weren’t, as you felt the racing of your heart grow every minute that passed. *RING* Was the sound of your doorbell ringing bringing your nervousness 10 fold higher as you approached it. 

Walking up to the door as you unlocked it you could already feel the sweat of your palms building up as you finally opened the door to reveal the one person who had you feel all these kinds of feelings standing in front of you.

You were speechless, compared to Robin you felt completely undressed as you stood in one of your pajama sets while Robin had seemed completely dressed for the occasion.

“Cute pjs”,Robin chuckled pointing to the set of colorful pants you had on. “Thank you, you look absolutely…stunning by the way.”,you started looking Robin up and down till you found yourself stopping at her rosy pink lips.

“It’s nothing really, I actually wore this the other day…Well not like that. It was washed and everything, I promise.”Robin continued beginning to blabber off about her attire bringing another unnerving silence when she finished. Luckily, it only brought an erupt of giggles from you as you pulled her inside. 

There you two were in front of your living room tv mesmerized by the scene of Sarah Williams in the middle of the ballroom dressed in a puffy dress.

“Hmm, what would you think of me wearing something like that?”,Robin asked in between crunches of her popcorn. “As if either of us have the money for that!”,you spat, tossing popcorn her way. “COME ON!” “Imagine me and you all dressed up ‘elegantly’, as we dance the night away”,Robin giggled with another one of those genuine smiles. It was such a simple comment and scenario but it made you feel all kinds of butterflies deep inside.

“What are we gonna do, kiss when the clock strikes midnight?”,you rolled your eyes, continuing to play it safe. “I mean- only if you wanted to.”Robin smirked but her smirk soon turned to a frown when she noticed your seemingly flustered look.

“Sorry.”,she whispered to no one in particular quietly bringing her attention back to the screen. It broke your heart to hear Robin like that but you were unsure what else to say and how else it may affect things, so you kept your mouth shut as well

As the movie finished up you sat there in awkward but comforting silence after Robin’s comment as you contemplated her words. “Hey so…do you mind if I stay over. My parents are still at work and you know Steve is probably going on some date-``''It’s fine, you can sleep in my room, if you want.”you spoke, excusing yourself to the kitchen to wash the bowl that had previously been filled with popcorn. So when you heard Robin go up the stairs past you, you could already feel the waterworks flowing in. 

“How could I be so stupid”,you thought to yourself as you stood over the sink contemplating your feelings along with your horrible efforts. Instead you sniffed your way through the pain and made your descent to your bedroom in sadness. 

A few minutes passed when Robin finally entered your room in her cartoon themed t-shirt and shorts set. “Cute, right?”Robin smirked, noticing you eyeing her. “Sure is.”,you softly smiled, glad to know Robin was still as jolly as always. As Robin plopped herself on her back at the edge of the bed you could already feel her cloudy blue eyes on you. “So like.” “I’m sorry about earlier.”Robin frowned, turning away her eyes somewhere else as she began.

“What do you mean?”,you asked questioning what she meant. “Earlier, when we were watching the movie. The whole dress, I know it was so stupid and I should have just shut my lips. But, you know me”,Robin continued on. “Robin!”,you shouted, having her turn around with a small ‘o’ forming at her lips. There was rarely a moment where something like this would happen,where you would do something so out there but were willing to take that leap for the sake of your friendship no matter the aftermath of the possible downfall of things between you two. 

Before you knew it you had found your arms wrapped along Robin's shoulders as you brought your lips to Robin's plush pink ones for a deep but small peck to her lips. Yet, in a matter of seconds you had pulled yourself away bringing a small whimper from Robin’s rosy lips. 

“How was that?”, you asked with a goofy smile plastered onto your face holding back the scream of excitement you were holding back.

“Can we do it again?”Robin immediately answered, bringing her lips back onto yours knocking the two of you down to lay on your bed. In minutes Robin’s tongue was inside your mouth exploring every crevasse to her heart’s desire. As her hands roamed their way under your night shirt making way for her chilled palms to find access on your bare skin sending shivers down your spine. Along with where you truly needed her. It felt like hours as you two made out with each other’s hands roaming every inch of each that you could reach without taking things too far. 

Yet, again you two were interrupted to catch some air between you two in which Robin asked, “So…are we like…official…are?”,it was dumb question but instead of a snarky remark you smashed your lips back against her’s to finally give Robin the answer she needed.

“SHUT UP!”Steve yelled, dragging a few glares around the store his way. “Calm down man, you don’t want your lady friend’s getting scared away.”Robin remarked, pointing to a couple of girls giggling at Steve’s hysteria. “Come on, you gotta be kidding me. Knowing (Y/N) they would wet their pants before doing something like that.”,Steve rolled his eyes waving towards the group of ladies. “Hmph, you’re just jealous I have a girlfriend, and you don’t!”Robin laughed leaving Steve speechless.

Then i came to LA and the difference was night and day. Thank you so much for the ask @imagineacoolerusername! I apologize for not responding sooner, because I’m really excited someone took me up on the ask game (and it’s never too many, I love thinking more about what/how I’m writing).

2) Where do you get your fic ideas?

I’m similar to a lot of people on this one—my ideas come from things that I see or hear around me. It goes hand in hand with the first question in the ask list, which is “do you daydream a lot before you write” and I am a *huge* daydreamer. I generally do get an idea of a full story realized quickly enough that I don’t spend a lot of time dreaming before I write (haha…she says after literal months of WIP posts from the same unpublished fic, lol). I daydream constantly about my hyperfixations though, and I just let my mind wander wherever it feels like. There are stories in my head I would never actually post because they’ve become OOC and self-indulgent to a comical degree, but I get pleasure out of thinking about them and so I let my thoughts drift there when they want to. I often get some good material that way for stories that I actually do want to share with people.

For my crucible marriage AU, the idea came from a throwaway line in Carry On about Watford having possibly started as a mages’ settlement: I started thinking about an AU where that was still the case, and there would still be the school but it would start for students at a younger age than in canon. Assuming the kids mostly went home in the evenings, the crucible wouldn’t need to assign roommates, and instead could do another job like…magickally determining one’s spouse. That was the thought process, and because I am *feral* for arranged marriage/married-at-first-sight stories, the fic has been living at the front, middle, and back of my brain ever since.

21) Do you prefer writing chaptered fics or one-shots?

I don’t have a strong preference; it just depends on what the story requires. I’ll know when I begin writing if a story is going to be long and plotty enough to require chapters; in this fandom I’ve done entirely one-shots because I’m leaning heavily on soft vibes without enough conflict to need more than one post to tell. The crucible marriage fic will definitely be chaptered, though

23) Is writing the beginning, middle, or end of the story easiest? Hardest?

It depends where it starts in my head, i.e. the part I’m trying to get to. If the idea starts off largely in middle of the story I want to tell, then I need to figure out a beginning that can segue into that. It’s usually not super hard, but then again, I mostly enjoy doing domestic-style fluff and cutesy flirting, so it’s not an enormous exercise to intro that. I’m having a harder time with the current AU’s beginning, especially since at this point I’ve dragged it all out so long that I want it to be just right. The hardest part for me is almost always the ending, by which I don’t mean how it all ends up, but the last sentence. I’m pretty weak with last lines, and the *absolute fucking worst* at titles. I think both feel like high-pressure, sum-your-precious-baby-up-in-very-few-words situations to me. I am flat out disgusted with myself for some of the titles I’ve gone with after throwing up my hands.

29) What’s something about your writing that you’re proud of?

I like my dialogue. I think it flows pretty well and is often cute or funny. And I think I do a decent job with shoehorning my contrived plot points in. The example I’m thinking of is the field trip fic I wrote (I can’t even bring myself to namecheck the title, did I mention how bad I am at them?) where the entire story basically hinged on getting Simon to have to sit on Baz’s lap on the bus. It was easy enough to assign them as seatmates, and spilling something on the seat is a good reason for Simon to not be able to use it, but because it’s a magickal universe there really shouldn’t have been any reason they couldn’t spell the seat dry. Magic had to have been disallowed on the bus, which let me write a nice little bit about how Simon had gotten it banned on an earlier trip (and also to reflect on how few field trips he’s even been on, awwww). Anyway, I thought it was funny and just about killed myself when Baz quipped “here comes the not-so-magic-school bus” to humiliate Simon in front of the class. Pretty much everything that happened after that was just as contrived, and I thought it was hilarious.

78) What motivates you during the writing process?

It’s a compulsion for the flesh to become word. I write even the stories that I would never post because they’re too dirty or too personal or too badly conceived to share, because once they’re described in words it provides a kind of release for me.

So......as you may know, I am a sucker for childhood friends to lovers trope! So me and Nikei has always been friends since childhood, and whenever something bad happened to him, I would always be there to make it better. I was the one who got him into journalism (since it was heavily implied Utsuro was the one who made Nikei discover his passion, I am the one doing it through being a supportive, cute friend :))

So we even got to go to the same high school together, and when Nikei became a famous reporter, he started to tease me and give me an interview with 'pervy questions'. which I just slapped his arm, making him playfully whimper in pain

But THEN Mikado sees us, and he starts to tease me, flirting with me, and even taunting me a bit (Yes, I hc him being a sorta 'bully' in this, sue me, I'm sorry! You see how he treats poor Iroha!). Mikado then starts to ask me 'pervy questions', which makes me flustered and frown

Nikei sees this and decides I had enough. So he starts to bark bck insults at Mikado, and even punches him for it. Lucikly (or unluckily) Shinji sees that, and breaks it up. He (reluctantly) takes Mikado away to the nurse, and I thank Nikei. He blushes and says it's nothing, but then I notice him blushing

"Nikei......what's up? I know you hate Sannoji, but I never saw you get......physical with him?"

Got through Ch 1 and Ch 2. Trying to even out my thoughts with gripes and praise but uhh so far mostly complaints. It feels very FFXV in a lot of ways that I don’t think are great! Nothing super coherent or clear yet in the critique department

My concerns were immediately founded . I hope this game can make me at least tolerate Zack since he’s obviously gonna be a major part of it and I’ve never been a fan. Remake made me change some of my reception to other characters so it’s certainly possible!

Repeating NPC dialogue still sucks, but that’s not unique to FF. Still annoying.

I spent all of Ch 2 with Red and Barret as my party because I got so tired of the romance shit with the girls in the opening scenes. Doesn’t seem to matter tho because party members never really say anything unless there’s a side quest they care about.

Red’s fun to play, I like his spins a lot! He still does the standing up roaring animation on battle end which is cute, and he rides a chocobo like a human shaped person which is also cute.

Animations are slow and overbearing. Not quite rdr2 levels but still enough to be annoying.

There’s a few seconds after moving from something or getting up from a bench when you cannot enter the start menu or save menu and it trips me up every time.

MAI. Is certainly a character. I turned her voice off (and by extension Chadley) because the one introduction was too much. Chadley is fine, Chadley is good. I did not need a worse version of him chittering in my ear during combat. It’s like they saw how (some) people like Purah and wanted to make their own.

There’s a lot going on mechanics wise and I think maybe there’s too much. Crafting, synergy moves, weapon abilities, folios, equipment leveling, materia, all on top of the combat system. I do not think this game needed crafting, tbh.

Fuck queen’s blood and fuck the side quest chain for it. Sorry Tifa, I’m not helping out this bartender because i don’t like this card game and your favored side quest requires me to play it.

The field and combat versions of Hollow are great, really liked those.

I hate the overfilled open world! Society has progressed past the need for open world in everything! What took 10 minutes in the original is now 10 hours - I don’t see how people can consider that a good thing when most of that time is wandering around doing fetch quests and gathering crafting materials. Unfortunately the only way to find out which quests are actually interesting is by playing them through. A burst pipe leading to a fast approaching energy crisis? Sounds interesting, too bad fucking Kyrie ruins it. A farmer’s cows are harassed by a monster? Sounds boring as fuck, but it leads to a questline shedding light on Junon’s history and Broden’s past, both of which are interesting and relevant to the story!
