Unlocking Higher Pay: How Soft Skills Will Boost Your Career in 2025
In the evolving professional landscape of 2025, soft skills are no longer optional—they’re essential. While technical expertise ensures you can do the job, it’s soft skills that determine how well you perform, adapt, and stand out in the crowd. These intangible qualities—like communication, problem solving, emotional intelligence, and leadership—are increasingly being recognized as the ultimate differentiators in determining career success and, ultimately, your pay check.
The Connection Between Soft Skills and Earnings.
Soft skills and earnings might seem unrelated at first glance, but the correlation is undeniable. Companies value employees who can not only complete tasks but also foster collaboration, adapt to changes, and lead teams effectively. These skills make you indispensable, opening doors to promotions, new roles, and leadership opportunities—each of which comes with higher compensation.
Tumblr media
Internal Promotions: Strong soft skills can help you ace internal interviews, build rapport with decision-makers, and secure that coveted promotion. They’re the hidden ingredient in any effective tip for promotion.
New Job Opportunities: Employers often look for candidates who bring more than just technical know-how. Demonstrating soft skill development during interviews can set you apart and land you a more lucrative role.
Recognition at Work: Soft skills like conflict resolution, problem-solving, and time management enhance team dynamics and productivity, earning your recognition and positioning you for rewards or bonuses.
Soft Skills as Transferable Assets.
One of the most powerful aspects of soft skills is their transferability. Unlike technical skills that may become obsolete with changing technologies, soft skills remain relevant across industries, roles, and career stages. Whether you’re managing a team, negotiating a deal, or presenting ideas, your ability to connect, lead, and inspire will always be valuable.
Invest in Your Soft Skills.
To thrive in 2025, focus on soft skill development through workshops, mentorship, or self-learning. By enhancing your communication, leadership, and adaptability, you’ll not only elevate your career but also boost your earning potential.
Your pay check is more than a reflection of your technical capabilities; it’s a testament to your ability to navigate and excel in the modern workplace. Don’t just work harder—communicate better, lead stronger, and watch your career soar.

Han
Tumblr media
Han was always effortlessly charming, the kind of person you couldn’t help but trust. When you began telling him about the person you were texting, he seemed genuinely interested. His questions were casual, his demeanor lighthearted, and his laughter infectious. You felt comfortable sharing everything—it was natural, especially since you were so close. But behind that warm smile and playful laugh, Han’s mind was racing. He hid his panic well, nodding along to your stories while plotting. The more he learned about this person, the more determined he became. Han pretended to care, to empathize, but it was all part of his calculated act. Once he had the information he needed, Han sprang into action. He processed everything meticulously, replaying each detail until he knew how to dismantle your connection with this person. What you didn’t realize was that Han already knew far more about you than you’d ever imagined. Long before you confided in him, he’d been quietly observing you, tracking your habits, your preferences, your vulnerabilities. Stalking wasn’t new to Han.
It was a skill he’d perfected, something he was patient with. He ensured that every step he took went unnoticed. Now, with this person as his target, he worked to disrupt every plan, every meeting between you two. He’d make sure nothing went according to plan. Maybe their car would break down. Maybe they’d suddenly fall ill. Or maybe something urgent would pull them away. Han’s methods were subtle, nearly invisible, but the outcomes were undeniable. Every time something went wrong, he’d be there, appearing just in time, like a knight in shining armor. As time went on, you relied on him more, drawn to his comforting presence, to the way he always seemed to appear when you needed him. “How do you always know when I need you?” you’d ask, half-joking, and he’d laugh it off. “I’m just lucky, I guess,” he’d say, his tone casual, making it seem innocent. But Han wasn’t just lucky. He orchestrated everything. He ensured that you saw him as your hero, and in reality, he was a monster hiding behind a charming mask. He didn’t care what it took to win you over, as long as the end result was you by his side. One evening, after another disrupted plan with that person, Han made his move. You were sitting together, the tension in the air palpable. He turned to you, his expression uncharacteristically serious.
“Can we try to be... more than friends?” he asked, his voice soft, almost vulnerable. “I don’t like the idea of losing you.” You hesitated, caught off guard by his confession. His sincerity, his raw emotion, made it difficult to question him. It felt like something out of a drama—an emotional whirlwind you couldn’t process. What you didn’t know was that Han had planned this moment long before it happened. Every word, every look, every gesture was part of the story he was crafting for you. To him, your life wasn’t yours—it was a play, and he was both the director and the star. Step by step, he guided you along the path he’d designed, ensuring you followed without realizing it. Every coincidence, every twist of fate, was his doing. He played the role of the supportive friend so well that you never suspected him. To you, Han was your confidant, your rock, the one person who was always there when you needed him. But to Han, you were so much more. You were his world, his obsession, and he’d stop at nothing to keep you by his side. As you smiled at him, unknowingly stepping deeper into his web, Han’s heart swelled with satisfaction. This was exactly how he wanted it—how it was always meant to be.
Felix
Tumblr media
Betrayed. That was the only word running through Felix’s mind when he discovered you had been meeting someone else. It felt like a knife to the heart to realize that, despite everything he had done for you, all the time you had spent together, you only saw him as a friend. The realization left him feeling crushed, but Felix wasn’t the type to let his pain show—not at first, at least. He tried to hide his turmoil behind his usual sunny demeanor. With his bright smile, he casually asked why you felt the need to meet someone else when he was always there for you. “What’s so special about them?” he joked, though there was an edge to his voice that you couldn’t quite place. But when you gave him the same answer again and again, that you only saw him as a friend, something inside him began to change. You didn’t realize it at the time, but you were pushing him too far. Slowly, the cheerful Felix you thought you knew began to slip away. The radiant warmth he always exuded started to darken. His smile became forced, and his eyes seemed to lose their light. Then one day, without warning, the mask he wore so well crumbled.
His hand shot out, gripping yours firmly—too firmly. It wasn’t playful or gentle like before; it hurt just enough to make you flinch. His grip was like steel, unrelenting. His voice, usually so soft and soothing, came out sharp and biting. “How dare you,” he said, his piercing gaze locking onto yours with an intensity that made your breath catch. “I do everything for you,” he continued, his voice filled with frustration, “everything to make you happy, to see you smile. And yet, you still choose someone else? You think I’ll just let you go like that?” Before you could respond, Felix moved swiftly, shoving you against the nearest wall. The impact wasn’t hard enough to hurt, but it was enough to make your heart race. His presence loomed over you, suffocating and overwhelming. This wasn’t the Felix you thought you knew—the sweet, carefree boy who made you laugh and feel safe. This was someone entirely different, someone whose obsession was beginning to consume him. His voice dropped even lower, each word deliberate and chilling. “Let me make one thing clear,” he said, leaning in close, his breath warm against your skin. “We’re more than just friends. I won’t let you walk away from me and into someone else’s arms.”
Your voice caught in your throat, unable to form a reply. The intensity in his eyes and the darkness in his words left you frozen. He studied your face, as though memorizing every detail, before speaking again in a softer, almost pleading tone. “Don’t make me do something you’ll regret. Because I will. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you with me.” For the first time, you saw a side of Felix you never imagined—a side that was possessive and obsessive, willing to cross any line to keep you by his side. The sweet boy who had once made you feel so special now felt like a stranger, someone you weren’t sure you wanted to know. Felix stepped back slightly, giving you just enough space to breathe, though the tension in the air was suffocating. His expression softened ever so slightly, but the fire in his eyes didn’t waver. “Think about it,” he said, his tone quieter but no less intense. “Why would you need anyone else when you have me?” The room fell into an eerie silence as his words lingered, heavy and unshakable. Deep down, you knew Felix wasn’t bluffing. He was no longer just a friend, and you weren’t sure if you could escape the path he had decided for the both of you.
Seungmin
Tumblr media
“Where do you think you’re going?” Seungmin’s voice was calm yet sharp as he stood in front of the door, blocking your path. His figure loomed, his usual gentle demeanor replaced by something unreadable. You froze, your hand still on the doorknob. “I’m just going out,” you said lightly, brushing off the tension. “I’m meeting someone, Min—” Seungmin stepped closer, cutting you off mid-sentence. His eyes flicked to the necklace around your neck—the one he had given you. His lips curled into a humorless smile. “You’re going to meet someone who makes you smile like that? And you’re wearing the necklace I gave you?” His tone was deceptively casual, but there was an edge beneath it that sent a shiver down your spine. You instinctively stepped back, suddenly aware of how different he seemed. This wasn’t the Seungmin you knew—the one who always teased you playfully. This version was colder, his presence heavier, suffocating. “You said it looked pretty on me,” you said hesitantly, trying to defuse the moment. Seungmin let out a low laugh, the sound devoid of warmth. He mirrored your step back, closing the distance. Reaching out, he pushed the door shut behind you. The sound of the lock clicking made your heart race.
“I did say that,” he replied, his tone dark and steady. “But don’t think for a second that I bought it for you to wear on a date with someone else.” His words hung in the air, heavy and charged. Your mind scrambled for something to say, but before you could speak, he took another step forward, his presence consuming every inch of space between you. “Seungmin…” you started, your voice barely above a whisper. He tilted his head, his gaze piercing and unyielding. “Do you have any idea how much I like you? How much I think about you? And yet, here you are, acting like we’re just friends. Like you can just walk out that door and be with someone else.” His hand reached out, gently but firmly grabbing your chin. He tilted your face upward, forcing you to meet his eyes. They burned with intensity, a mixture of frustration and longing. “You’re mine,” he said, his voice low and deliberate, every word hitting you like a weight. “You should’ve figured that out by now.” Your breath hitched as his grip tightened ever so slightly, enough to make you feel his control. “Min, we’re—” “No,” he interrupted sharply. “Don’t say it. Don’t you dare say we’re just friends.”
His gaze softened momentarily, but the intensity of his words was unrelenting. “I don’t want to hear it. Because I’m not giving you a choice.” His words sent a chill down your spine. The Seungmin you thought you knew—the kind-hearted friend—was nowhere to be found. Instead, this version of him stood before you, unrelenting and terrifyingly sure of himself. “You’re not going anywhere,” he continued, his thumb brushing against your cheek in a gesture that might have been tender if it weren’t for the context. “Not to them, not to anyone else. You belong here—with me.” His hand dropped, but the tension in the air remained, so thick it was hard to breathe. He stepped back just enough to give you space, but his presence still loomed large. “You should know by now,” he said, his voice softening, though his words carried the same weight. “I’m not going to let you go. So stop trying.” The room was silent except for the sound of your unsteady breathing. You could see it in his eyes—Seungmin wasn’t bluffing. Whatever version of him you thought you knew was gone, replaced by someone who had no intention of letting you slip away.
Jeongin
Tumblr media
As Jeongin watched the man stumble away, his steps unsteady and his face pale with fear, a faint smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. The confrontation had been brief but effective, leaving no room for doubt about Jeongin’s intentions. With a quick glance down, he noticed a small streak of blood staining his knuckles. It wasn’t his. He wiped it off casually, as though it were nothing more than a minor inconvenience, before pulling his phone from his pocket. His thumb hovered over the screen, scrolling through his contacts until it landed on your name. "Friend," the label read. He scoffed, the word feeling like an insult. His grip tightened on the device as he stared at it, his thoughts spiraling. "What should I do to you?" he muttered under his breath, his voice low and tinged with frustration. The mere thought of you calling him just a friend after everything he’d done for you was infuriating. Did you truly not see it? Or were you just pretending, clinging to the safety of that label while unknowingly fueling the fire inside him? Jeongin let out a bitter laugh, shoving the phone back into his pocket. "Friend," he repeated to himself, the word dripping with disdain.
"After all this time, sticking by your side, thinking we’re just friends? How foolish of you." He began walking, his pace steady as he headed down the dimly lit street. The night air was cool, carrying the faint scent of rain. The path was familiar—it always led to the same place: your place. He had walked this route countless times, each step bringing him closer to you, to the one person he had claimed in his mind long ago. His hands slipped into his pockets as he hummed a soft melody, the tune oddly cheerful for someone who had just chased off a rival. His mind, however, was anything but calm. Thoughts of you consumed him, intertwining with the lingering adrenaline from his earlier encounter. "Friendship isn’t in my dictionary," he muttered under his breath, the corners of his mouth twitching into a smile that was a little too wide. The streetlights illuminated his face as he looked up at the starry sky, the expression on his face one of twisted satisfaction. He thought of the man who had dared to text you, dared to think he had a place in your life. That man wouldn’t be bothering you anymore—that much was certain. Jeongin had seen to it personally.
"You won’t be hearing from him again," he said to himself, the words carrying a quiet finality. He chuckled softly, the sound echoing in the empty street. "In the end, the only person you’re going to see is me." As he approached your building, his steps slowed, his mind already crafting the narrative he would present to you. He didn’t need to rush; after all, he had all the time in the world to make you see things his way. Standing in front of your door, Jeongin took a deep breath, schooling his expression into one of boyish charm—the one that always made you laugh, always made you let your guard down. But beneath that smile lay something far more dangerous. To him, this wasn’t just about affection—it was about possession. You were his, whether you realized it yet or not. And Jeongin wasn’t the type to let go. As he raised his hand to knock, his heart pounded with anticipation. He could already picture it: your surprised face when you opened the door, your soft voice greeting him, unaware of the lengths he had gone to ensure you’d stay by his side. "In the end," he whispered to himself, his grin widening, "this story only ends one way—with you and me."

Had you known that such a little piece of fabric would prove so tedious to tie, you would have bought the clip-on tie the saleslady had recommended to you (and rightfully so, it seems). It had been, what, 25 minutes? No, 26 minutes of trying to tie a tie, look neat and professional, and feel good before walking into your interview. Looking ahead at the mirror, you scowl, hurriedly grabbing the untied tie off your neck and throwing it on your bed. The sounds of footsteps directed you towards the figure of your mother who was approaching you.
Pausing, she glanced at the tie carelessly tossed onto the bed, then shifted her gaze to you with a raised brow. You let out a sigh, struggling to find the right words, but before you could speak, she shook her head with a hint of amusement. Your mother stifled a chuckle as she picked up the long, narrow fabric and began tying it around your neck with effortless precision, her movements practiced and sure.
"Taking after your father in more ways than one, hmm?" She chides. "He never did learn how to tie a tie either."
If you weren't your mother's daughter, you'd assume her to be disappointed, but you knew better. That, and the soft smirk on her face spoke measures. "In my defense, this is my first time wearing a tie..."
"Honey, you don't have to wear a tie, you know?" Your mother says as she motions for you to follow her.
"I wanted to be more mature. More adult. More professional." You reply.
"Being professional doesn't lie just in the way you dress. Sure, it helps, but your excellent set of skills and information is what makes you a valuable candidate. Dressing nice is just the cherry on top to sell the whole thing." You smile at her words. "Being professional is how well you understand things and how well you can articulate those things to others. Hurry along now. You should get some food in you before you head to your interview."
You nodded, as you made your way to the kitchen. Your sister was already at the table, gorging on the food (not that you can blame her; your mother's cooking is immaculate).
Eventually, you finished eating and grabbed your bag, heading off to the interview that you were so nervous about. You still couldn't believe you landed the interview, especially when you'd been told by so many professors and senior students that companies at career events almost never hired freshmen. But so far, it had been one good thing after another. You just hoped this kind of luck would stay a little longer.
Waiting at the bus stop, you hummed a fun little tune to yourself. It had been stuck in your head for some time now, and it seemed to soothe the light case of jitters you had. You fantasized about walking into the interview room, acting all confident (even if you weren't totally confident), and blowing away the interviewers and then being the first freshman (at least known to you) at college to have landed a summer internship on the first try. After that, it was only a matter of time before your dreams came true, slowly, but surely.
That's why it was so weird when you heard a sound that shouldn't have been any where near you.
Ň̸̳̥̄̎͑̓̍̋͊́̉͂̃͂̈́̀͒͑͌͛̏̀͌̎̎̉̊͂̎̿̈́̇̉̏͆̉̓͒͗̂͘̚͝ͅE̵̡̛̬̫͍̱̼̼͚͇̽̌̈̿̿̋͋͒̓̋̊̈́̍̏̊̒̽̐͐̓̾͌͐̈́̊̆̋̀̏͛̃̚͝͝͝Ǐ̴̧̝͚̟͖̣͓̗̫̖̞̙̝̪͎̦̖̬̜̫̙̯̠̺̬̞̘̤͍͋̈́̒̀͒͛̌̄̉̓̃̅̃̓̎͋̀͌̃̀͗̚̕̚Ģ̸̛͉̬̹̲͓̟̼̭̯͍̩̝̟̓̅͐̍͑̒́͆̋̄̉͋̿͐̄̽̈́̈́͐̊̓͠͠͝H̴̢̻͈̦̱͈͎̤̝̪̦̙̳̖͈̻̯̱̭͎̠͖͇͈̳̭̄͛̇̾̌̉̽̌̓̇̐̃͐̒͘͜͜͜͜͜͝ ̷̻͕̹̗͈̰͓̫̙̥̳̯̦͈̣̦̗̬͖͒̑͆̓̆͘
That really didn't sound right. Sure, there was a horse barn at your university, but that barn was on the other side of campus. And you were no where near it-
"Is that an animal?" You wondered.
And that's when you saw two beasts charging at you before your mind went blank.

A cold, oppressive darkness surrounded you. The air was thick, the sort of mustiness that aged wood would have, accompanied with a faint earthiness. Your fingers brushed against smooth, polished surfaces, The sudden pungency of turpentine invaded your senses. Your fingers brushed against smooth, polished surfaces as panic rose in your chest--walls, too close, confining, trapping. You felt your hands hitting the surfaces, anything, desperate to be let out. The sharp creak of hinges jarred your hearing, and suddenly, bright light spilled into your world as the heavy lid of the coffin swung open.
You gasped, lungs heaving, desirous for the cool, slightly perfumed air of the grand chamber you now faced. There were coffins--floating coffins-- and mirrors and all sorts of gothic structure impeding upon your small figure. The hall of seated robed figures did little to ease your nerves.
As you stumbled out of the coffin, your legs wobbled beneath you, and your eyes slowly adjusted to the lighting of the ornate room. It wasn't as bright as you originally thought. Before you could dwell on it (or anything else) for much longer, the sharp tap of boots against the stone floor drew your attention towards a figure descending a rather grand staircase. He wore a long, sweeping cloak that shimmered much like a raven's feathers. The mask he donned on his face obscured everything except for a glint of a golden glow in place of his eyes.
"Oh, honestly! You can't come through your gate unbidden. It's unheard of!" His voice carried a theatrical splendor, not unlike a stage actor reveling in his role. "What an impatient one you must be. Allow me to introduce myself: I am Dire Crowley, the esteemed headmage of this illustrious academy, Night Raven College!" He spread his arms wide as though expecting applause.
He received none.
"Though it appears we have a latecomer tonight," he added, tone dripping with dramatic mystery. His piercing gaze locked onto yours, sending a shiver down your spine. "As a headmage, I cannot have such tardiness tarnishing the reputation of my fine institution. It is about time we begin the orientation." You stare at the man, wide-eyed and more panicked, clutching the sleeves of your coat.
"Wait--orientation? What are you talking about? Where even am I?" The words tumbled out of you in a rush, your heartbeat racing as the reality of the bizarre situation hit you like a wave. Crowley's expression softened into one of faux sympathy, though his tone remained the same manner of theatrical smugness he'd been sporting all this while.
"Ah, poor thing, so confused! But there's no time for questions. Quickly, quickly now! Follow me and do try to keep up!" He spun on his heel, his cloak billowing dramatically as he strode away, leaving you scrambling to your feet and mutter a frantic "What the hell is going on?"
At that moment, glass shattered, followed by a strange sound--an odd mix of a growl and a high-pitched cackle. Before you could even glance around for its source, a small creature landed squarely in front of you and the headmage. The creature in question appeared to be a cat. If cats could stand on their hind legs, talk, and were engulfed in blue flames, that is. "HOLD IT! EVERYONE, JUST STOP!"
Your earlier panic evolved into steadfast confusion as the creature started yelling once more. "Outta my way, human! I'm the Great Grim," he snarled, puffing up his chest twice his size. "And I'm gonna be the number one student at this school, got it?" His fiery tail flicked with determination, but his bold declaration faltered as his gaze actually settled upon you.
"Oh my god, a talking Tanuki!?" You exclaimed.
"That's why you're stunned!?" The talking cat cried out. "And I'm NOT a Tanuki!! I am a monster who will become a great mage! I am the illustrious Grim!"
The hall was overtaken by the robe-clad figures bursting out in laughter at the not-Tanuki creature. If you were in a better situation, you might have even felt bad for Grim, hearing the students laugh about how a monster could never become a mage.
But alas, you had yourself to worry about right now.
Grim screamed "What was that!? If that's how it's gonna be, I'll show you the special magic I've been saving!!"
And then the whole place erupted in flames.
You genuinely couldn't keep up with whatever was happening any more-
It seemed Grim was so overwhelmed with the intent to prove to others his power that he didn't stop and think for a second about the damage his fire-spewing was causing. You felt the flames lick your feet and yelped, jumping back, closer to the headmage.
One student (as you now realized they all were) was seated at the front of the hall--who was clearly some sort of bigshot (if the pedestal he and his friends sat on were any indication)--muttered in a bored manner, "He's giving us quite a show."
The orientation hall was pure chaos. Grim's flames were only growing larger by the second, and students were scrambling out of their seats, trying to dodge the scorching flames licking dangerously close to the velvet curtains, ornate banners, and more importantly - them. "I told ya, I'm the greatest mage there is!" Grim bellowed, his tail swishing wildly. Just as the flames threatened to engulf the podium, a commanding voice cut through the raucous and pandemonium.
"Enough." A boy with red hair stood from his seat, his blueish-grey cold and focused. Holding a pen which held a giant jewel, he waved his pen, uttering the words "Are you ready for your sentence? The verdict comes afterwards. Off with your head!"
Grim's flames extinguished in an instant. The hall was left in a haze of the remnants of the heat that consumed it just seconds prior, and the only sound that could be heard was the shuffling of robes. The red-haired boy adjusted his cuffs, his gaze sharp as he assessed Grim.
"What the heck? What is this collar?" Grim pawed at the strange collar that now rested around his neck. It held heart motifs, and seemed impossible to remove, if Grim's thrashing was anything to go by.
"Stop fighting it, cat."
"Arrgh, I can't get it off!" This time, I'm gonna roast you alive for real! FRMEOOOOW!"
You instinctively shielded yourself from the flames that Grim spouted, mentally preparing yourself for the imminent heat once more.
Except, there was no heat.
There were no flames either.
Nothing at all.
The other students looked just as confused, and Grim tried over and over to unleash his flames. But all that was left was a cat coughing.
"My magic! I can't breathe my fire!" Grim exclaimed.
"Naturally." The red-haired boy remarked. "I sealed your magical energy with my magic spell."
Your head felt heavy and dizzy, and it was hard to keep up with all the events being thrown at you rapid-fire (pun not intended). The hall erupted into applause, with both students and the Headmage showering the boy with praise for his quick thinking and mastery of magic. But you? You were barely processing anything at all. Your head spun even more, your chest tightening as you tried to make sense of the chaos.
Magic existed--actual magic!
And you'd just seen it firsthand.
The weight of it pressed down on you as you dropped to the ground, your legs finally giving away, as your surroundings blurred into an overwhelming whirl of cacophony and decaying heat.
Before you could fully gather yourself, the boy who had quelled the flames stormed towards you, his cold eyes blazing with fury. "You!" He seethed, "Do you have any idea the level of disrespect you've shown here today? Causing such a disruptive scene at the orientation--it's a blatant insult to the Queen of Hearts! This level of recklessness is unacceptable!"
As his tirade grew sharper with each word, the pressure of his gaze felt like it was crushing you. Your breath hitched, and the world around you began to spin--his voice became a distant echo as panic once more surged through your chest. The room felt like it was closing in, even though you were no longer in that god horrid coffin. You couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't focus. Your vision blurred, and the noise around you was deafening, and you felt yourself shrinking under the sheer force of his outrage, your body trembling in response.
It was when he shouted, "You will lose your head!" that the weight of his words became too much to bear, and you finally succumbed to the overwhelming lull of unconsciousness.

Author's Note: I hope you guys liked the first chapter! I had a lot of fun writing this, and I am genuinely super excited for this series. I'm basing the timeline off both the game, the manga, as well as some creative liberty on my part. As of right now, I'm still deciding who the main love interest should be (but it's so difficult because I'm having a really hard time choosing between the characters). Let me know what you guys think, and as future chapters are published, let me know what theories you guys have! Anemone
Author's note: I'm going to be trying to do Mermay 2025.
Summary: Catius and Olly talk about Anemone- the flower and the sea creature
Warnings: None. LMK if I need to add something

"Did you know that the some say that Sea Anemones were named because they look like a flower planet called Anemone?" Olly randomly says to Catius as they are swimming together- helping to patrol the Harpies nest near Steelix Cliff base.
"Really?" Catius says half interested as he looks around and spots a sea anemone in the ocean water its jelly like tendrils wriggling a little.
Olly nods. "yeah! and the Anemones - the sea ones have a symbiotic relationship with clown fish."
"Huh. That's a neat fact." Catius says as he remembers something, "I am not sure if you recall- but during training for 'soft skills' grox shite, the flower anemone means either 'arrival of spring winds' or 'forsaken love'."
"Eh? When did we learn that?" Olly asks surprised as he scatches his cheek, "both of those meanings for a flower make no sense. Why does a flower have a cryptic message?"
"Warp knows, baselines are weird," Catius says with a shrug.
"Should we get some of the flower anemones for Storm-bastard to give to Miss Lana?" Olly asks innocently.
Catius blinks and his mouth drops open a little at that, "I don't know what flowers mean, if anything in courtship for Harpies, Olly."
"Neither do I, but the flower Anemones are pretty and rounded," Olly says with a faux-innocent tone.
"I don't think we should try to mess with Stormbreaker's courtship," Catius says.
"Fine," Olly says, "... I still don't like what he did to Claude."
"Neither do I Olly," Catius says as he tugs his brother in for a side hug. "lets get back to hunting."

A lil update on my lil blankie: more signs of wear in the construction, flaws are showing themselves, and the fabrics are breaking in (some nicely, some are wearing).
3 Jan 2025
Tumblr media
So by now, Lil Blankie is about 7 weeks old and has been washed about 5 times.
I sleep with the blanket every night. Sometimes I cover my head and eyes as I sleep. Sometimes I wear it like a cape around my shoulders as I go about my business in the home. Every second day or so, I spend several minutes just snuggling it for the sheer joy of it--and also for science, of course.
But increasingly, there's a sense of... Well, it's less lighthearted than it used to be. I can see and feel Lil Blankie ageing and wearing down--recording it makes me even more aware of it. I'm feeling the entropy.
But also, that was kinda the point of this project: to prepare for repairing my (much larger, and much more emotionally significant) childhood blankie by testing various fabrics, practising the skills required, and, perhaps, becoming comfortable with the idea of wear and repair.
...
The flannel pilling is becoming more noticeable. I'm not sure if this is just because I'm more conscious of it, or if it's actually getting appreciably worse. Hard to say at this point.
Tumblr media
The Essex cotton-linen continues to break in beautifully, becoming more and more pliable. The texture is still coarse however.
I'm really enjoying this lovely criss-cross crinkle!
Tumblr media
The Sprout Woven is softening beautifully, too. I'm starting to see some wear, but I think it's a good thing: little raised fibres like you'd see on flannel. I can see why this is sometimes used for quilting! I think it's gonna be cuddly and squishy and just generally really nice for snuggling!
Tumblr media
The Japanese wovens haven't changed much since last time: they still have a "crispness" that hasn't washed out: a bit stiff, and about as coarse as before. I wonder if they will soften before they wear out?
The only exception is, where the Japanese wovens are backed by the thinnest quilting cottons, there is some kind of transferrence of the quilting cotton's pliability, through to this side... I can't tell if this is purely a psychological phenomenon, or an empirically objective quality. It might be the Japanese woven slipping slightly against the smooth quilting cotton.
In any case, they still have a slightly coarse texture, which I'm attributing to the weave (perhaps a slub in the yarns, or just a coarser weave), and they've developed a criss-cross crinkle as well.
Tumblr media
A small patch of the pale blue-purple woven had a tear that I noticed during construction, and patched with fusible stabiliser on the wrong side. The stabiliser quickly wore off (second or third wash?) and the tear began fraying. But I don't think it's grown any larger. I'll have to remember to measure it in future posts.
Tumblr media
The Japanese print (which I've since learned is a heavier 220 gsm cotton) continues to break in beautifully. While it's not as cuddly as Sprout Woven, or as smooth as quilting cottons, it feels... "sturdy" and "reliable". I really really want some house pants made from this fabric! But I could imagine a long-cherished blanket being made from it, too.
Here's some shots of the tear I noticed last time. I think it's grown a little since the last post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the triangle side (which was made using various quilting cottons)...
In general, all these cottons have softened up beautifully. I think they're at peak softness right now: the most pliable, before they start to fuzz and wear out. So I guess I need to record how long before they fuzz and wear out.
The thinnest cottons, I think they're more appropriately described as "lawn": about 95 gsm, thin enough I can see my hand through, very smooth. For the purposes of these posts, I'll consider them a sub-set of "quilting cottons".
Here's my favourite wrinkly triangle (incorrectly sized during cutting, and stretched/squished to make the triangle points fit together nicely):
Tumblr media
When I search for the softest quilting cotton, the order is still:
lawns, when backed by flannel
any quilting cotton, when backed by flannel
the rest, except:
the black-and-colours floral print, especially when backed by Essex linen
When I run my hand over the triangle side, it just feels lovely and squishy all over. I can especially tell when I'm touching lawn backed by flannel, because of how smooth the lawn's surface is. But anything backed by flannel also feels quite lovely.
I can also tell when I touch the black-and-colours floral print (not the black-and-white floral print), especially when it's backed by Essex. This quilting cotton is subtly-but-noticeably coarser than any of the others. I have no idea why, but I can just tell that it is. This fabric came in the same pack as the black-and-white print, which I think also feels very slightly coarser than the other prints?...but I don't think it's as coarse as the black-and-colours print. ... This could be entirely subjective, however.
Tumblr media
Some shots to show the lovely drape of these cottons:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love that my imperfect sewing made this side pucker and crinkle; and I'm extra glad I decided to quilt along the triangle seams (the diagonal ones, anyway) for the larger areas of un-sewn surfaces on this side.
I'm so happy I decided to make this lil blankie.

—Now playing: Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John ✫
The soft and languid movements of Cleo’s thumb above the red button in the bus were a stark difference to the tone of her voice as she chatted with Daphne.
The bus had three double doors: one in the front, one in the centre, and the last in the back. Given their usual spot in the bus, Daphne and Cleo stood by the last door, waiting for it to open once the vehicle stopped at their house.
In the front, Taehyung and Adrielle comfortably sat next to each other. They were chatting as well, but, given Taehyung’s wandering eyes, he most likely wasn’t so focused on the conversation. He wanted to greet Daphne before she got off the bus so his heart would giggle, shy at seeing her bright smile.
Daphne was in the same situation: Cleo talked nonstop like she always did, and Daphne was the listener. However, she listened very little to the conversation, too busy bouncing her eyes from her friend to her crush and vice versa.
Not having the same set of skills as Taehyung, Cleo noticed her lack of concentration and, once they were out of the bus, she pointed it out purposely to tease her. One would think that she asked Daphne a question, but she reminded her of her actions instead.
“Ooh, y’all are on good terms,” she whistled, wiggling her brows and nudging Daphne’s shoulder with hers. Her friend blushed, feeling unwelcome in the suddenly boiling confines of her jacket.
She’d simply waved at him while keeping her lip between her teeth to avoid smiling like an idiot. On the other side, Taehyung waved and winked at her. She was thankful to have left the bus because the vehicles behind it would’ve stopped, mistaking her face for a red traffic light.
“We were never fighting.” After glancing at Cleo a couple of times and internally dying of embarrassment, Daphne concluded that the asphalt beneath her feet wouldn’t judge her, so she kept her eyes glued on it. Occasionally, she’d see dead leaves or dirt.
“Yeah, yeah, but that’s not what I mean.” Cleo had linked her arm with Daphne’s because she wanted to be close to her friend, but, as she was pestering her, the need for closure became a way to hold her friend back from escaping her prying and curious eyes.
“You two have grown so close to each other. How long has it been since you started studying together? Two weeks?” Daphne nodded to answer, before specifying that it had been almost two weeks.
“Almost two weeks and y’all are already attached to the hip,” she commented, dragging Daphne’s fleeing figure closer to let her words seep into her eardrums and register in her brain.
The past week had been a fun rollercoaster of emotions for Daphne.
After the practice matches last Wednesday, Taehyung sat next to her on the bus, and, despite the presence of people like Cleo, Avyanna, and Jimin, it seemed like they were in their own world. None of their friends interrupted them too much, especially once they decided to listen to music together, sharing Daphne’s wired earphones.
It was not planned. Daphne always brought her earphones with her in case her headphones would die on her, and, on that fateful evening, it became a link, a physical connection between her crush and her.
They listened to various songs. She discovered he loved The Neighbourhood. He learned she was maybe Lana del Rey and Beabadoobie’s number-one fan.
His favourite song was “Female Robbery”, and her favourite songs were “Old Money” and “Disappear”. She even made him save a few new songs. She already knew all of The Neighbourhood’s songs, but he had her save “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino” from Arctic Monkeys.
You best believe she listened to it as soon as she was home and under the showerhead.
“How do you do it?” Daphne unconsciously scoffed in confusion and finally looked at Cleo.
“How do I do what?”
Cleo scoffed back, looking at Daphne like her question wasn’t even rhetorical. “Girl, you’re bagging him!” The statement alerted Daphne’s eyes to move elsewhere and hide her increasingly red cheeks.
“Oh, my God. You’re exaggerating now—”
“No, I’m absolutely not!” Now, was Cleo really exaggerating?
Daphne and Taehyung had shared their Snapchat, and, as the girl was talking to her friend while heading home, among the numerous notifications in her phone was one about Taehyung’s recent snap.
It was a reply to Daphne’s, who had sent him one right after school as she was on the bus.
Throughout last week, they went to the library together without missing a day.
At school, Taehyung had decided to take it upon himself to get her something at the bar if she hadn’t had breakfast in the morning. She always paid him back because she didn’t want to feel like she was using him, unaware that he was wishing for the day he’d buy her a full-course meal to come around.
On Friday, the temperatures were going underground again, and they did jumping jacks at the bus stop after sharing a cigarette on their way. How healthy.
Daphne couldn’t care less—being in his presence was more than healthy. It could give her immortality.
He would object and, following in Keat’s footsteps, claim she was immortal because she was an artwork, God’s masterpiece, God’s Mona Lisa.
“Can’t you see the way he looks at you? And the way you look at him? Y’all are made for each other, especially since you have known each other only since this little time.”
Daphne saw it. She liked looking at his eyes despite the rush of blood they would send to her cheeks, but, being a full-time overthinker and Anxiety’s pet, she feared she’d look into everything too deeply and gaslight herself. Daydreaming and fantasising before sleep was more than enough for the time being.
If she really had to state things for what they were, she’d have to talk about how she saw his mood brighten when she got on the bus on Saturday morning to go shopping with Cleo.
If she really had to state things for what they were, she’d have to point out how quickly he replied to her messages, be they pictures, snaps or quick texts.
If she really had to state things for what they were, she’d have to comment on how dedicated he was to his work whenever he tutored her.
If she really had to state things for what they were, she’d have to recall how bright his smile was whenever they met after school to go to the library. He’d be always standing next to a random car, hands in his jacket pocket, neck craning as he looked for her.
If she really had to state things for what they were, she’d have to think about how he always looked at her on the bus on their way to school. His former sneaky peaks had come out of their hiding and he wasn’t pretending anymore.
But she just couldn’t conclude that everything wasn’t platonic. Despite how comfortable he made her feel, she didn’t really know the boy. What if this was the way he behaved with everyone?
As the girls talked, their feet led them closer to home. That day specifically, Cleo and Daphne had planned to hang out at the latter’s place, just like they did before school.
With Daphne leading the way, the gates were opened—closed by Cleo. As Daphne’s keys wiggled to open the front door, the girls could hear Loki and Luke barking from the other side.
Eventually, they made it inside after zig-zagging between the happy dogs.
“There you are!” Daphne’s mom resounded from the kitchen. Given the small amount of buses around at the end of the school day, Daphne and Cleo always made it home by the same time, so waiting for the girls was no hassle.
“I’m leaving with Granny, but there’s food in the pot. I think it’s still warm but you can always heat it up if you want to.” As she informed the girls, she walked to the front door and hurriedly wore her shoes and jacket.
“Thanks, Mom,” Daphne said, placing her jacket next to Cleo’s on the hanger.
Being familiar with the house, Cleo made her way to the kitchen while Daphne put her slippers on, listening to a few important updates from her mom.
After the clicking sound of the front door closing, the house fell into a subtle silence obstructed by the soft sound of Daphne’s slippers on the floor.
“Ooh, nice.” She heard Cleo say and understood she’d checked what was for lunch.
They eventually warmed the food a bit before settling at the dining table to eat, and, unfortunately, Cleo didn’t want to drop the previous topic—she needed some tea to accompany the lunch. “How did you do it, really?”
“Oh, my God. Are we still on that?—”
“Heck ya, because in less than two weeks your crush looks at you like you were a majestic show of fireworks while I’ve been here since birth and have three guys on me, who behave like malfunctioning antennas.”
Daphne tried to refrain from laughing but it was stronger than her, and Cleo didn’t bother, laughing along with her.
“I’m for real!” she repeated.
Daphne took a deep breath in and asked, “malfunctioning antennas? Really?”
“How else would you describe it? Nick and James are on me, including Jungkook—”
“Oh, so you know!” Daphne gasped, dropping her fork on the plate and unintentionally startling her friend.
“Know what—”
“I thought you couldn’t see how James and Nick are on you!” Daphne clarified, jaw hanging low and eyes bulging out of their sockets.
“Oh, I do see it. I pretend not to—” Daphne’s loud gasp interrupted her and silence followed right after. Cleo broke eye contact and filled her mouth with food on purpose.
“You’re playing them?” Instantly, she dropped her fork and with bulging eyes, shook her head to deny the allegations. Swallowing, she replied, “Absolutely not!”
Daphne’s eyes screamed, begging for more explanations. “I don’t know. I just see them as friends and, not wanting to fuck up the friendship, I just overlook it, hoping they’d get the message.”
“Which they are not.”
“Exactly.” Cleo’s whines proved the theory in Daphne’s head. Recalling Asher’s words at Cleo’s house, James and Nick seemed to have a crush on Cleo for a long time, and, if this was Cleo’s stand on the issue, it was obvious they too ignored her signals, hoping for a better outcome.
“So, what are you going to do about it?” Cleo thought that was a great question with little to no answer.
What could she really do? She didn’t want to bring the topic up because she feared the outcome would ruin years of friendship, but she also couldn’t drag it out for too long. There was really no escape.
“I don’t know. I treat them like friends, in fact, brothers, but they just wouldn’t get it. What am I supposed to do?”
Daphne knew the answer to that and it was clearing things up, but, just as Cleo feared it, so did she. She couldn’t even imagine what would happen if Cleo even decided to choose one between the two. Would the boys start hating each other? It would be immature but it wasn’t to be thrown out of the picture.
As she thought about it, she also remembered a moment at Jungkook’s party she considered worth mentioning. “Do you think James is really that interested?” She dropped the question and took another spoonful of food.
“What do you mean?”
Before replying, she drank a few sips of water. “I mean, you know… at Jungkook’s party, James didn’t behave like he had a crush on you or, I mean, if I had a crush on a boy, I wouldn’t tell him in the face that I’m looking for some other guy to have fun with. I wouldn’t even think about it because I wouldn’t be interested in participating in such activity.”
From Cleo’s furrowed brows, Daphne understood her friend was oblivious to this information. “You know, at some point, he, like, disappeared, saying that he wanted to look for girls and shit.”
“Oh.” That was Cleo’s only reply and Daphne nodded. Cleo really didn’t know—or maybe she chose not to let it get to her, although, considering her claims, she wouldn’t even mind it, would she?
“Well, I think that speaks for itself, doesn’t it?” Daphne thought about it a bit before agreeing with her friend. What could James have meant with those actions, anyway?
“So that leaves you with Nick—”
“No, that leaves me with Nick and Jungkook.” Cleo corrected.
“Jungkook? I thought you said he wasn’t your crush—”
“I was just shy to admit it, but the more I see him, the less I can keep denying it.” Daphne gasped, forked dropped again in her now empty plate.
“So, you like him… not Nick—” she said and Cleo agreed, “—not James.”
Cleo shook her head and firmly replied, “Nope.” The ‘P’ popped.
“Then, what about him? Jungkook, I mean?”
Cleo had finished her food as well and, before replying, she emptied her glass of water, and leaned against the backrest of the chair, satisfied with the lunch. “I think the situation with Jungkook is the same with Nick, although I am Nick and he is me.”
Daphne laughed, getting up to place her plate in the sink. Cleo followed suit.
“You’re laughing? I’m for real. It’s frustrating! I don’t like the ones that like me and the one I like doesn’t like me. Is it some type of karma?” Daphne continued laughing even as she washed her plate.
“What makes you think he doesn’t like you?” Cleo snapped her head toward Daphne, eyes bulging out as she wondered if her friend had pronounced those words or if she was just hearing strange voices.
“You did not just say that,” she replied.
Daphne chuckled and shrugged, still not understanding what surprised Cleo so much. “What?” she asked as they went to the living room. All the way there, Cleo didn’t speak, and, since she wasn’t leading the way, Daphne always had to turn around, wondering what could be taking Cleo so long to answer.
“Cleo, seriously. He doesn’t like you? Rumours have it that he’s obsessed with you and keeps talking about you—”
“Oh, really? Doesn’t really seem so. Remember the broken antennas? The fucked-up signals?” Daphne chuckled again as Cleo dropped on the couch next to her with a sigh of exasperation.
“Have you tried sending him signals? You never know—”
“Daph? I’ve been here since the moment I was born. I’ve known him since kindergarten, and I started having a thing for him for long enough. You really think I didn’t do anything?” Daphne didn’t immediately reply, understanding her friend’s frustration but she still had to advise her somehow.
“Maybe… I don’t know… start treating him the way you want to be treated… like… be bolder because, at the end of the day, you behave with him the same way you do with Nick and James so…” Cleo sighed again, refusing to believe her friend had just spoken those words.
She wanted to object, but remembering that her friend hadn’t gotten to know Jungkook’s true ways, she thought of something else to say. “It’s Jungkook. That’s all you need to know for now. You will eventually learn more and, maybe, understand my frustration. Shall we bake?”
Because of the reply, Daphne laughed, scoffing at Cleo’s attempt to change the topic. “Okay, then. If you say so, I really can’t wait to learn these special ways of Jungkook you’re talking about and also to bake. Wait for me here, I’ll go grab Granny’s recipe book.”

—Now playing: Walkin’ On The Sun by Smash Mouth ✫
Cleo and Daphne always got off at the same bus stop because they were neighbours and lived not even five minutes away from each other on foot.
That Tuesday afternoon, Taehyung got off at a bus stop later to join Adrielle at her place.
Generally speaking, Taehyung hated winter. It wasn’t his season even though he was born in it. He preferred autumn, especially early autumn, the bridge between late September and early October.
Winters were boring to him. Boring daytime hobbies, boring outfits, boring hang-outs, and boring outdoor activities. A total bore.
Even the weather wasn't thrilling. He couldn't recall the sunniest day he'd witnessed ever since the season showed signs of the upcoming one.
Now, days would rather be bright or dark grey. No in-between.
With the thickness of the bed of clouds in the sky, there was no space for direct sunlight to shine through. The rays could only reflect their light against the white and foggy mist, casting a gloomy brightness above the country. This was the best day in winter. The worst would be when the clouds choose to become dark and thick with rain.
These were the typical days in winter and late autumn.
Given the position of his home, from Taehyung's window, the days were mostly dark, especially when looking at the street leading to the house.
Despite this, the position was strategic for Nana because the sunlight would shine on her backyard garden, giving her the fruits she cultivated.
It almost seemed calculated.
The light within his house was similar. He hated turning on too many lights, preferring to keep everything measured.
The anteroom light was motion-activated, and the hallway bulbs were used sparingly in the evening. If he was alone downstairs, he turned on the light of only one room: if the living room lights were on, all other lights had to be turned off.
Adrielle’s home followed the same system and, despite being daytime, Taehyung knew it because her home was basically an extension of his—just as his house was of hers.
For the time being, downstairs was inaccessible because Adrielle’s mom had guests over, so the two childhood friends comfortably studied in Adrielle’s bedroom. The girl was on her bed, writing away at her laptop, while the boy sat at her desk, his head bent over the book in profound focus.
December was approaching full force and at maximum speed, as was exam season. She had an oral physics test coming in first, while he had to study philosophy.
Seeing that he was busy with the notebook before him, Adrielle grew confused.
He always studied philosophy with his laptop, preferring to have all his notes properly in order, but, since he walked into her place, he never brought his laptop out of his bag, giving her the suspicion that he wasn’t studying philosophy.
There was no light turned on in the room, preferring a natural source. She sat on her bed with her legs crossed and welcoming her laptop. He wasn’t fully back-facing her, but the position didn’t allow her to have a great look at what he was doing, so she dropped the question.
“You studying philosophy?” Her voice broke the almost uniform silence. Before then, the only sounds obstructing it were the voices of Adrielle’s mom and guests and the idyllic sounds of the country in late autumn.
“Nope,” he simply replied, refusing to remove his gaze from the notebook. Unlike him, Adrielle’s eyes moved from her laptop to him, noticing how he hadn’t budged at all.
“Don’t you have the test on Friday? You said you’re in deep shit moments ago.” Her response met a brief silence as Taehyung chose to finish the sentence he was writing before turning around to reply.
“I’m just finishing up a few things for the girl I’m tutoring.” It went without any saying. She knew who the girl in question was and, unconsciously, something started boiling in her veins.
The amount of topics to study for his oral test was considerable and he chose to work for the girl instead?
“Oh, erm—” she began, “—Daphne’s her name, right?” With his eyes still on the notebook, he hummed and nodded.
Adrielle’s eyes lingered on his figure, the scene seeping into her mind. He almost had a hunch back because of how focused he was. His hand wouldn’t stop moving, and his arm shook as a direct consequence.
The lamp on her desk shone directly onto the notebook he worked on. She stared at him for a bit, disbelief etched on her face.
All she knew was that if she were in his shoes, she’d never prioritise her student over studying for herself, especially when the due date is right at the door.
“She had a few doubts and her test in next Monday, so it’s important I help her out,” he spoke, suspecting that Adrielle’s silence meant she wanted more clarification.
He just didn’t know that she was burning holes in his back as she watched him work.
Was she selfish? Would it be selfish if she never would’ve done the same if she were in his shoes?
She received pressure from her parents, but it wasn’t the only thing spurring her to study. She wanted pride, and the best way to feed it at her age was by getting good grades.
Yes, she was reserved and relatively shy, but she liked when people looked at her and thought the was the embodiment of the phrase ‘beauty and brains’. To achieve and maintain that, she had to study.
Evidently, Taehyung had other goals he wanted to score and most likely didn’t care about public opinion, but, being his closest friend, if not the only, she cared about his academic performance as much as she cared about hers.
All these considerations were maybe an excuse she created to explain the feelings bothering her mind, but they faded into nothingness when she asked him: “Do you… like her?”
Immensely self-conscious, she feared to have sounded awkward and added, “Jimin and Anna won’t drop the topic.” The following chuckle was a means to hide her slight nervousness.
Finally, he stopped his work, although he still didn’t turn around. The initial silence was a clear answer to Adrielle. If he didn’t like her, he wouldn’t hesitate to deny the claims, but why was she even unsure? As she’d said, Jimin and Avyanna had been pestering him the whole week about it and he never pushed them or their claims away.
Evidently, she was unaware of what transpired at Jimin’s place two Saturdays ago while the boys played video games.
“Maybe?” The correct answer was ‘Heck yeah!’ but he was shy and didn’t want to deal with it, especially with Adrielle of all people—she never seemed in the mood to discuss topics of this type, and he feared it would make uncomfortable perhaps.
On the other end, Adrielle’s face remained stoic, although her eyes showed hint of surprise. She wanted to mentally slap herself for even being surprised at all. He never denied the allegations to begin with.
“Oh, really?” Her voice switched to autopilot and her tone wasn’t chosen by her brain anymore. If it were, it would’ve raised eyebrows. She sounded the way she wanted to. The way that masked her true feelings. She sounded like a curious friend.
She couldn’t see it, but warm undertones filled Taehyung’s cheeks and he looked around the desk—muscle memory for wandering eyes whenever he felt shy.
“I guess so.” His voice came out softly and he resumed his work, sending Adrielle a message. He didn’t want to talk about it.
It had been a big struggle opening up to the boys. Before he would with Adrielle, it would take a bit.
“You gon take her out? You will eventually.” She rather didn’t get the message or chose to ignore it.
Once again, Taehyung’s hand ceased writing, leaving the pen to hover over the notebook and the sentence unfinished.
Growing the last tiny bit of courage, he replied. “Anna has given me a few ideas.” That was the equivalent to ‘Yes, I will take her out.’ He was just working on it.
The reply  was enough to quench Adrielle’s curiosity and she returned to her work. Taehyung noticed when he heard her fingers tapping on the keyboard of her laptop. Internally, he rejoiced before sighing in relief.
Behind him, Adrielle still maintained her stoic face as she typed on her laptop. It was a facade, a very tall and thick wall painted with the wrong colours, not the ones that fit the description of her inner turmoil.

Her Hands
Written by Aaliyah O'Neil
She once tied bows in tangled hair,
Wiped muddy knees with mother’s care.
Her hands were maps I used to trust,
Soft anchors shaped by love and dust.
She cooked with warmth, not just with skill,
And sang through silence, fierce and still.
She sensed the storms that circled me—
Before I spoke, she set me free.
She stitched the seams of broken days,
And taught me kindness, not just praise.
She held the house, the world, my hand—
A strength we barely understand.
She sat through school plays, rain or shine,
Cheered loudest at the finish line.
She gave up dreams so I could grow,
Said little, yet she made it so.
But seasons shift with quiet stealth,
And time moves in to shadow health.
Now I rise first, prepare her tea,
Lay out the pills where eyes can see.
I guide her steps, remind her name,
But never speak the word, “the same.”
I brush the hair she used to braid,
And soften light when colours fade.
I track the bills, the forms, the care,
And learn to soothe what isn’t there.
I wash the clothes she once hung proud,
And hush the world that feels too loud.
She asks again what day it is—
I answer with a patient bliss.
I button coats she used to zip,
And guide her hands to glass and sip.
I hold her close when her body shakes,
Then cry through quiet coffee breaks.
But still she smiles that knowing smile—
The one that held me all the while.
Some call it duty, call it strain,
But caring isn’t clothed in pain.
It’s stitched from years of selfless thread—
In all she gave, in words unsaid.
It lives within the small, worn things—
The tea, the socks, the songs one sings.
It’s family in its truest form:
To shelter love, to keep it warm.
And though her voice is faint and thin,
Her strength still echoes from within.
For once, she carried all of me—
Now I return the legacy.

IAMO 2024-25 season wrap-up:
2024-25 is complete for IAMO, now that Worlds is done. many teams have been finished since December and January, so probably are pretty far along with their 2025/26 FDs. curious what the off-season work looks like. probably everyone is making their 90s playlists and learning the new RD rules
it must be a fun time of year when they can work on basics, refresh their off ice training and dance classes and get charged up creating new programs
Tumblr media
Layla Veillon/Alex Brandys 🇨🇦CAN jr 18/19 yo: they improved on their JGP scores by about 10 pts from last season. they made headway on the reversed part of the pattern. their skating is gorgeous - their one foot at one of the competitions made me cry in the stands it was so beautiful. they're projecting more than ever. the upper body softness and expressive arms that would make their presentation even better is i hope the next step. they were affected a bit by G/T coming back to juniors with the age rule change - i kept feeling like the international judges were seeing them more clearly than Canadian ones at home because of the 2 other strong teams who are aging out. Layla and Alex go into next season as the top Canadian junior team and by far the most experienced. their last 2 FDs were character pieces to vintage movie scores, so curious how IAMO will switch it up as they aim for Junior Worlds in Tallinn
Tumblr media
Athena Faith Roberts/Eric Alis 🇪🇸ESP 19/22 yo: they were a fun addition - they have good energy and a nice connection on and off the ice as far as i can tell. she got a nice comment from Ben Agosto about her moves and her presence at Nebelhorn. this was their first senior season, and they've adapted well to their new training home after moving from Wing/Lowe sometime around Feb/March 2024
Tumblr media
Olivia Josephine Shilling/Leo Baeten 🇧🇪BEL 28/24 yo: another team who just completed their first season at IAMO - this was their 3rd season together and were with Igor before this. they've progressed to look stronger and more secure. they missed the new tech minimum for Euros by only .44, but if they continue growing their skating skills at this rate, it's looking promising for the upcoming season. their international high scores were Ice Challenge and Santa Claus Cup, but i think they looked more grounded and smooth later on, at Egna and Tilburg, and that allowed them to show their connection and warmth
Tumblr media
Charlie Anderson/Cayden Dawson 🇨🇦CAN jr 19/19 yo: their first season together - she moved back to juniors after a year at senior for more opportunities and time to grow. he moved from Carol Lane's school. she attracted some attention for wearing one of Tessa's memorable dresses as well as Madi's. she moves like a natural dancer, and this partnership feels like it clicked right away. we're going to see them at Next Gen and a JGP or two pretty sure
Tumblr media
Olivia Corneil/Alexandre Emery 🇨🇦CAN jr 18/? yo: their 2nd season together, their first as juniors. they just missed going to Nationals but have grown as a partnership since their first year at Novice. not sure how old he is, but i think they're age eligible to remain juniors. they're a tall team - it seems like it can take a little extra time to gel or find balance, but when you do, there's such an upside to long lines, and you could see the work they did this season on foundations. IAMO is good with bringing out the inner performer in shyer skaters, and it's been great to see him open up over time to match her
Tumblr media
Alyssa Robinson/Jacob Portz 🇨🇦 CAN 21/23 yo: i'm all for sending juniors out, but Skate Canada will send a junior team who formed 6 weeks before NextGen camp all the way to Asia but not send a beautiful team like this one to a single Challenger outside Canada. it's so frustrating!! 😩 because these two are able to sustain emotion in a program in a way that feels mature and deep. they have lovely lifts. they have range. they need more competitive experience and feedback from judges outside their own fed. i'm going to come up and fight Skate Canada if they don't support these two again this next season 😭 i love this team and want to see them get opportunities

Why Soft Skills Are the Key to Career Success in 2025?
Unlocking Career Success in 2025: The Power of Soft Skills.
Alex Sever in said, "Hard skills get you the interview — soft skills get you the job"
As the world move into 2025, the job market is becoming increasingly competitive. According to a recent article published in a reputed journal in December 2024, employers are no longer just looking for candidates who meet the technical requirements of a role. They want professionals who can collaborate, adapt, and thrive in dynamic work environments. If you have any seasoned mentor who is giving you career counselling or career guidance, then they will certainly emphasize on the fact that Technical skills earn you a salary and help you do a task but to make career out of the job you need to develop Soft Skills.
This shift has placed SOFT SKILLS firmly in the spotlight as the key differentiator for career success.
The "What" vs. the "How" of a Job
Technical skills define the “WHAT” of a job—what tasks you can perform and what qualifications you possess. However, SOFT SKILLS define the “HOW”—how you perform those tasks, interact with colleagues, and navigate workplace challenges. While technical expertise gets you in the door, your ability to communicate, lead, and adapt is what ensures long-term success.
Research Backs the Importance of Soft Skills.
A report by LinkedIn highlights that 92% of talent professionals believe that strong soft skills are equally or more important than technical skills. Additionally, a study by the World Economic Forum identifies skills like COMMUNICATION, PROBLEM-SOLVING, and EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE as critical for future workplace success.
Tumblr media
Why Companies Value Soft Skills.
Cultural Fit Matters: Companies want team members who align with their values and contribute positively to the workplace culture. Skills like ADAPTABILITY and COLLABORATION demonstrate your ability to fit into diverse teams.
Team Dynamics and Leadership: Being a team player is essential. Employers look for individuals who can build relationships, manage conflicts, and inspire others through LEADERSHIP and TEAMWORK.
Resilience in Challenges: Workplaces are full with challenges, from tight deadlines to unexpected problems. Skills like PROBLEM-SOLVING and EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE show how well you can handle stress and find solutions.
Soft Skills in Action.
Imagine two candidates applying for the same position. Both have identical degrees and similar technical expertise. One, however, demonstrates EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION, a knack for building relationships, and the ability to lead under pressure. It’s clear who the hiring manager would prefer.
The Takeaway.
In 2025, SOFT SKILLS are no longer optional; they are essential. They define how you navigate the workplace, build relationships, and overcome challenges. While technical skills qualify you for a job, soft skills ensure you succeed in it. To thrive in the competitive job market, focus on honing your COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK, and ADAPTABILITY—the true keys to career success in the future.
To enhance your career prospects in 2025, focus on developing the following soft skills:
COMMUNICATION: The ability to convey clear message and receive clear message.
TEAMWORK: Collaborating effectively with others to achieve superior outcome.
ADAPTABILITY: Adjusting to new challenges and embracing change with a positive attitude.
PROBLEM-SOLVING: Analysing situations and devising creative solutions.
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: Understanding and managing your own self and your emotional response, and exhibiting empathy with others.
Investing time, effort and money in these soft skills will not only enhance your employability but also position you for sustained career growth in an increasingly dynamic and interconnected world.

Chapter 7
Summary:
Eliot, Quentin, and Jane work on the mechanics of clock magic. With much to learn from each other, they begin to delve into what went wrong, in hopes of fixing it.

(series) Summary: Jane is a Time Witch. Eliot took an elective in Horomancy. Let's get Quentin back, shall we?
-------------------------
And so—their practice began in earnest, albeit slowly, with all the training wheels.
Eliot carefully followed every rule or even hint of preference to a T, as tempted as he was to add a flourish here, a minor efficiency (aka cheat) there. Truth be told, he glowed inside whenever Jane examined his work, hummed to herself as she tried and failed to find a flaw or something to criticize, and wound up pronouncing it “Sufficient.” She sounded put out, but Eliot saw her lips quirk up as she turned away.
Quentin, being both a careful scholar and an inveterate close-up magician and cardsharp, could be both exacting at getting things right, and insistent upon innovative improvements. Hearing Jane’s voice rising in anger, Eliot hurried over to find a stoic, poker-faced Q telling Jane he had no idea how a hack got into one spell, or a monitoring charm tucked cleverly into another. Looking over Q’s spellwork, Eliot had to work hard to find the alterations, and he wasn’t sure he’d have spotted them at all, if Jane hadn’t raised a fuss. Quentin was good at hiding things.
“Quentin, you must take this seriously! Bending the laws of time is dangerous enough, without you trying to cheat your way out of everything, like a common magician!”
“Are you seriously trying to insult me with the name of my own profession?” Quentin asked, in that soft, older voice that held laughter at the edges but steel underneath.
Eliot snuck in between them and slipped his arm through Q’s, twining their fingers. “What would you like us to become?” he asked Jane.
“Proper horomancers. Even time witches, if you have the knack.”
“You’d trust us with that?” All hint of teasing left Q’s voice.
“You have yet to prove yourselves trustworthy, where time manipulation is concerned,” Jane answered. Which, Eliot supposed, held the very instructions they were looking for.
Too bad Quentin had that stubborn streak. He ramped up his efforts, meticulously proving his willingness to follow every rule while achieving outstanding results, which was so on-brand for Q, but frankly made it hard for Eliot to strategically deploy his own flashes of brilliance, which usually required careful timing and subtle but elaborate staging. But while he might enjoy the spotlight, he would never take anything from Quentin’s shine, so he rolled up his sleeves and got to work, no fuss, just efficiency and hard work, which did, he supposed, hold its own form of elegance.
When Jane pronounced their results for each skill and strategy “Acceptable,” they moved on to the next.
“Damn us with faint praise, why don’t you,” Eliot murmured to Q behind her back, which drew a smile.
Q overcame a surprisingly stubborn problem: a finicky clock on the edge of the Barrens that had begun randomly ticking backwards, setting the time in its immediate vicinity rippling back with it, which made it surprisingly difficult to synch in to repair.  Q solved this by providing a healing herbal soak that massaged the tree’s roots, making the whole tree and the clock within it magically relax.
But all Jane could do was smirk and say, “Acceptable.”
Eliot would not stand that. “Remarkable!” he declared, in a loud voice that startled the birds in a nearby tree. They fluttered up, squawking, scattering. Eliot drew himself up, standing tall, leaning into the command pose he’d perfected as high king. “Say rather that Quentin is the most remarkable student of horomancy you’ve ever had!”
Jane’s smirk dissolved into a sunny smile. It startled Eliot, as she flashed her teeth and said to him, “You’ll do,” before patting him on the chest and walking away.
“What was that?” Eliot muttered, deflating as she walked off, with no regard for kingly bearing.
“You’re taking her bait,” Q said, a grin sneaking out as he put his clock-repair tools back in the bronze box by Eliot’s feet. “She likes it.” As he straightened from latching the toolbox, one hand on his knee, he reached toward Eliot as if he wanted assistance rising. Naturally, Eliot bent to help. Quick as lightning, Q reached out and squeezed his ass, just the way El liked. Eliot let out a pleased chuckle and pulled Q up for a kiss.
But they had more serious moments. Even though no one was referring to it as a plan yet, they all knew some serious strategizing would be needed. Since they still weren’t talking about it, was a good time to gather information. And, with Jane setting a brisk but reasonable schedule for their studies, they did have downtime. For Eliot, there could never be enough time with Quentin. Of course, he loved spending a lot of time in bed, but doing anything with Quentin delighted him, and they made sure to have plenty of tender moments together, in and out of bed. meanwhile, though Q clearly basked in El’s presence, his favorite hobby was gathering knowledge. So their “free time” also included a lot of horomancy, since this would be key to their ability to stay together.
Both Eliot and Quentin had the same mission: to save each other, keep each other safe. And to have a chance to keep loving each other. Preferably without endangering anyone else.
Jane, on the other hand, said she needed to stop Big Evil like the Beast or Everett, but clearly prioritized saving her brothers. At the beginning, she told them, young Jane had been determined to save Martin if she could. All her attempts failed. At that point, for the forty time loops Eliot and Quentin had experienced, she switched to stopping the Beast by any means necessary. But this time, she declared, since they’d already solved that problem, the only way she’d agree to change things again required an absolute change for the better, in which at least one or even both of her siblings finally had the chance to live in peace.
But to do any of this, they needed more information.

"If I am to be cursed with eternity, then let it be spent with you."
✧˖*°࿐background
born into the Castillos family, a lineage deeply tied to Khaenri'ah, Selense’s birth was marked by both expectation and superstition. the Castillos bloodline, descended from the Cordis family, has always walked the line between revered and feared— masters of magic, diplomacy, and manipulation, known for their siren ancestry and their near-unparalleled control over wandless magic and the elements.
her mother, Aylin Nori Castillos, was a half-siren, renowned for her ethereal beauty and deadly magic. she was a woman of grace and steel, a whisper of a storm before it struck. her father, Ostin Hyun Castillos, was human, but his bond with Aylin extended his lifespan, making him something otherworldly by association.
selense grew up in a household filled with magic, music, and intense expectations. being a half-siren meant she was expected to master both magical and vocal enchantment, a skill that could both bewitch and destroy. her upbringing was strict, but not devoid of affection—her mother was deeply loving, guiding her in harnessing her siren abilities, while her father remained somewhat distant, unsure how to connect with a daughter whose very existence defied normalcy. she was always aware of her family's legacy, navigating the fine line between power and restraint—learning that a single note sung in the wrong moment could shatter lives.
selense was raised in the traditions of both her parents, taught to balance duty and desire, elegance and ruthlessness. from an early age, she was trained in combat, magic, and diplomacy—a Castillos heir was never just one thing.
to be a Castillos is to be more than powerful—it is to be untouchable.
"The world will love you or fear you, but it will never ignore you. Learn to wield that truth as a weapon." —Aylin Nori Castillos
her childhood was not one of softness. expectations weighed heavily upon her shoulders, but she bore them with an eerily calm acceptance. she was a child who rarely cried, who learned early how to hide pain behind a serene smile. to the world, she was the perfect Castillos heir.
but she was also something more.
she was the girl who found solace in the shadows, who moved like a ghost through the halls of her family’s grand estate, who longed for something real in a life built on illusion.
selense and Medea first met at a grand, aristocratic gathering, an event between the Faulkner, Castillos, and other influential families. at the time, they were both young—two girls standing at the crossroads of fate, drawn to each other like a haunting melody to its perfect counterpart.
selense noticed Medea first—or rather, she felt her before she saw her. there was something about Medea’s presence—controlled yet quietly intense, an air of something untamed beneath careful discipline. it intrigued her.
medea, in turn, was drawn to Selense’s silence—to the way she held herself, regal yet detached, her violet-blue eyes unreadable yet brimming with something far too knowing for their age.
their first words were calm, measured, and filled with underlying meaning—an instant understanding between two people who rarely found others who spoke their language without speaking at all.
it wasn’t love at first sight. but it was something close. a knowing. a gravity neither of them could explain.

selense is the embodiment of quiet elegance, her presence both commanding and elusive. her hair is a cascade of soft blonde, kissed with subtle hints of gold under sunlight but cool as silver in the moon’s glow. cut into a hime style, her straight-cut bangs frame her regal features, giving her an air of refinement and quiet authority. when damp, her hair darkens slightly, a lingering trait of her siren heritage.. she wears it effortlessly—sometimes adorned with delicate silver pins, sometimes cascading freely like liquid silk down her back.

Future Ghost Chapter 8
Edite 6/13/2025
McCoy sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. McCoy's gut told him Danny was a good kid at heart, despite the lies. The boy clearly had his reasons for wanting to hide what he was. However, regulations demanded full disclosure of medical status. McCoy had to get to the bottom of this. Not even getting into the fact that the ensign was a minor and had managed to skip the schooling the academy provided. Command was not going to like that.
He tapped his com device on the wall. "McCoy to Kirk. Jim, can you and Spock meet me in my office? I need your help with something?”  What he wanted to tell the two was best left off official records or written records.
A moment later, Kirk responded. "On my way, Bones. Is everything okay?"
McCoy sighed. "Just get down here, and I'll explain."
While waiting, McCoy reviewed Danny's scans again, fascinated and puzzled by the unknown DNA signature. He wished he could sit Danny down and have an honest talk with him and make the kid feel safe enough to open up. But Danny was clearly too scared for that right now. Hopefully, Kirk could get through to him. Another idea popped into McCoy’s mind. Scotty could talk to the kid while he explained the situation to Jim and Spock. Maybe make the kid feel like he had someone in his corner instead of the lecture interrogation that would follow.
Picking up the flip phone-style comm unit, he dialed in the code for Mr. Scott. "Scotty, I need you to meet me in my office as soon as possible. It's about Ensign Fenton."
“That bad, Len?” Scotty’s accented voice replied.
“Just get up here,” McCoy answered.
The sound of footsteps brought McCoy back to the present, and he glanced up to see Kirk, Spock, and Scotty entering his office. Their expressions were a mix of concern and curiosity, and they were clearly eager to learn what warranted this impromptu meeting.
"Thank you for coming so quickly," McCoy began, gesturing for them to take a seat. "We have a bit of a situation with Ensign Fenton. For one, he's only fifteen, and he fancies himself a skilled hacker…. he skipped the academy altogether. And he’s hacked and forged his medical records. He claims he’s a hybrid, but from what little he told me, I’m afraid we might be dealing with an abusive augmentation experimentation case here. Whatever his parents did to give him extra abilities."
Spock had a perfect poker face, not letting any emotions slip; he only allowed a raised eyebrow to indicate his interest. “Fascinating. It is illogical to conceal one's true nature, and the amount of deceit is alarming, while it is an impressive task he implemented."
“Abilities in what way? Like Evens, ESP, or enhanced strength and intelligence like augments?” Kirk asked.
“Now, I haven’t done a full examination or test of his abilities, just what he’s told me. I don’t know how much he can do with his mind or how many ESP capabilities he has, but from the sounds of it, whatever was done, whatever his parents were experimented with, gave empathetic abilities and more physical ones, like invisibility.”
Kirk's eyes lit up with a realization. “The away missions!” Captain Kirk furrowed his brow; he was concerned about the ensign's lies but more so for his well-being, having observed the young man performing admirably during away missions. "I did think he seemed a bit young," Kirk admitted.
“While the ensign could be tied with the success rate of the away missions he has been on, is there only way to measure this?” Spock asked.
Mccoy nodded. “He does give off a faint energy signal of some sort. My instruments have trouble picking it up. It could match the signature we have been finding. It’s possible it gets stronger when he’s using his abilities. It…...just needs further study.”
Spock and Kirk looked thoughtful. Mccoy knew that Kirk had a soft spot for kids, especially those from rough backgrounds. He knew he’d be willing to give the ensign a chance, especially if he didn’t mean any harm to the crew. Mccoy was well aware that it broke Jim’s heart not being able to help Charlie Evens; they just were not equipped to help an unstable teen with powers. Hell, Jim had been willing to speak of for the Evens kid when those energy beings came to collect him. Jim had a big capacity for compassion. After all the things that the kid did, Jim was willing to try, arguing that they could teach him, saying that he just needed someone to teach him.
Mccoy mused that, it was a good sign that this ensign, while similar, was very different from that case. At least this kid hadn’t lashed out at anyone with his abilities. And if his hunch was correct, the kid had been using them to help on away missions. Granted, they would have to discuss what would be done. Should they allow him to stay aboard or make him actually go through the academy? Having him underage and possibly on the run from something added a whole other can of worms. Mccoy wanted to give him a chance, but he’d be for the option that would be in the best interest for the kids wellbeing as well as keeping everyone safe.
Scotty looked surprised but interrupted with a hint of defensiveness in his tone. "Ensign Fenton's done well in my department, Doc. Never had any problems with the lad."
"I know," McCoy replied, nodding to acknowledge Scotty's point. "But this goes beyond his work performance. He's a hybrid or augment of some sort, and he's terrified of revealing the truth about his nature and what happened to him."
As McCoy spoke, he could see the concern etched on Kirk's face.
"First, we need to get him to open up," McCoy continued. "I've already tried, but I think maybe Scotty would have better luck, given their working relationship. I think that would be best before we call him in here to explain himself.”
Scotty nodded, determination set in his features. "Aye, I'll give it a go, Doctor. Maybe I can help put his fears to rest."
"Thank you, Scotty." McCoy turned to address the others. "While he's doing that, I'd like you two to help me look into Ensign Fenton's background. His DNA is an exact match for a human, but there's also something else–something I've never seen before. There are no matches in the Starfleet database, so we're dealing with completely uncharted territory here. I have no idea what substance was being experimented on, and from what he told me, his parents found some entity from another dimension, which is very concerning. "
Spock raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the challenge. "Fascinating. We shall assist you in your investigation, Doctor."
"Alright then," McCoy said, clapping his hands together. "Let's get to work."
Danny sat on the biobed, staring at his lap, his fingers fidgeted nervously at his side, and he wished he could simply fade away. But before he could act on the impulse, Scotty approached him with a warm smile and a friendly clap on the back.
"Come now, lad," Scotty said, his tone light and teasing. "Why are you giving our good doctor such a hard time?"
Danny swallowed hard, trying to steady his racing thoughts. He hesitated for a moment before responding, his voice barely above a whisper. "I just... I didn't think anyone would believe me……and……I’ve never had to explain it before."
"Ya shouldn't assume what we will or won't believe, Danny," Scotty reassured him gently.
“I know……but it’s hard to talk about…..I always feel like a freak.” Danny replied in a sad tone.
Scotty reached out and placed a hand on Danny's shoulder. “Hey lad, none of that ya hear.” Scotty noticed how the young teen relaxed under his touch. Scotty made eye contact with Danny, giving him a reassuring look. “You’ll always have a place in my department…...but if you want to stay, you have to give the full story to the captain. Giving him the full story will help him make a decision or even decide to give ya an opportunity; otherwise, he might only have a few choices to make for ya.”
“I’ll try…...it’s just hard,” Danny mumbled.
“Now, don’t tell me too much, 'cause you’ll have to repeat it, but McCoy told me you could turn invisible, can ya show me?” Scotty asked, he was in truth very curious what the lad could do. And maybe showing the wee lad that he was okay with his abilities would put him at ease.
Danny gave Scotty a shy look but nodded. With that, he disappeared from the visible spectrum.
Danny's disembodied voice echoed through the room. "You don’t think this is weird?”
“What, no! This is amazing!” Scotty reaches out and prods at the empty air, his brow furrowed in concentration, as he could feel the solid form of the ensign but not see him. *Really gotta work on the kid’s confidence; something that is weird isn’t bad. * Scotty thought to himself. “Can you do anything else, lad?”
Danny, feeling encouraged by Scotty’s reaction and the feeling of his positive emotions flowing off of him, felt comfortable enough to share more. He could tell his boss didn’t think he was a freak.
Danny's disembodied voice held a hint of pride. "Watch this." With a shimmer, he reappeared on the bed, concentrating, and his body went transparent; he showed off his ability to go intangible. "I can do all sorts of stuff – phase through walls, even manipulate ice, a bunch of stuff…... honestly, if you think of a ghost…...or anything a ghost can do……I can do……” Danny trailed off, testing the waters, without saying HE was half ghost.
Scotty let out a whistle. “That’s mighty impressive, lad!” Scotty gave Danny a considering look. “Have you been using them on away missions?”
Danny nodded eagerly. “Yeah! I’ve been trying my best to help where I can….I have a good handle on them. When I first got them… it was a mess. I’d accidentally phase out my own clothes or fall through floors.”
Scotty raised an eyebrow at this. “I’m glad ya got a handle on it, can’t have you falling through the ship out into space. Ya know that will be a good thing to mention to the captain, every little bit of information will help him decide what to do with ya.”
Danny decided not to mention that he’d probably be okay out in space right now. “Do with me? What’s gonna happen?” Danny felt his anxiety increase.
“Nothing bad, lad. I imagine it’s more of deciding whether to ship you back to Earth or not. Regardless if you stay or not, you’ll be ok, lad. Nobody's gonna harm ya. However, ya might get some extra chores as punishment for lying. Don’t worry about it too much, I’ll be right here with ya.” Scotty replied.
Before continuing their conversation, McCoy, Kirk, and Spock exited the CMO’s office and walked over to the medical room where Danny was located.
"Alright, Ensign Fenton," Dr. McCoy said, “Are you ready?” He asked.
Danny nodded his head. He still felt nervous, but he was trying to be brave. It did help that Scotty was standing by his bedside, giving him encouraging glances.
Captain Kirk leaned forward, his eyes filled with compassion. "Danny, we can keep your medical information confidential, but you have to tell Dr. McCoy the truth. Otherwise, you will face disciplinary action, including time in the brig. Do you understand?"
Danny hesitated, his breath hitching in his chest. He glanced at the faces surrounding him—Scotty, who had been nothing but kind; Spock, who regarded him with cool curiosity; and Dr. McCoy, whose concern was palpable beneath his stern facade. Finally, with a heavy sigh, Danny relented.
"Alright," he muttered, casting his eyes downward. “I’ll answer whatever you want to know.”
“Good, good,” Kirk replied, relieved the teen wasn’t giving them a hard time. “I would like to know for the record if your name is Daniel Fenton?”
“Yes, I didn’t lie about that. That’s my real birth name.” Danny replied. He was partly relieved they were starting with the easy questions.
“Fascinating,” Spock spoke up. “Because when we tried to find a file on you, the only documents found were the ones you made. You don’t exist in the Federation database.” Spock ended his statement in a way that prompted an explanation.
Danny rubbed the back of his neck. “How far back did you look?” Danny felt nervous, so much for easy questions.
The senior officers pinned him with an intense stare at that question. McCoy slowly asked, almost afraid of the answer. “Ensign……What year were you born?”
“Um…..February 12th……1989….” Danny replied, having trouble keeping eye contact with the officers around him.
There was a thick silence that felt like it could be cut with a knife. Spock raised his eyebrow in interest. Captain Kirk dragged his hand down his face and gave a deep sigh in frustration. This complicated things if the ensign was to be believed.
Scotty stared incredulously at Danny but soon gave him a thoughtful look. This explanation explained some of the teen's actions and words.
"You're from the past," McCoy said slowly. Comprehension dawned in his eyes. "That's why you lied about your age. You're not just underage - you're centuries displaced!"
“How… how did this happen, Ensign?” Kirk asked, getting straight to the point.
Danny’s gaze flicked between the officers. "I got stuck here because of a stupid wish."
The disbelief on the faces of his commanding officers was evident, and Dr. McCoy pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. "Son, you're going to have to explain that one a little better."
“I know, I know," Danny interjected quickly, his voice small. "It's just... hard to explain. And you said to start at the beginning…...ok…here it goes….” Danny's eyes darted between the four older men, weighing his options.
With a defeated sigh, he finally relented.  "I'm... I'm a half-ghost. My parents are fringe scientists who study this material called ectoplasm….and they figured out a way to build this interdimensional portal. I accidentally got stuck inside when it turned on. The ectoplasm from the Ghost Zone merged with my DNA, making me a human-ghost hybrid. That's why my biology is... weird."
Scotty scratched his head, bemused. "Well, lad, I didn't think it would sound so... strange."
"Of course, it sounds strange!" Danny huffed; his cheeks flushed with indignation.
“While strange, it’s not out of the range of possibilities, and while impressive, someone from the 20th century could create that level of technology, it’s not impossible.” Spock cut in. “This portal you mentioned, did something send you through time?” Spock asked.
“Yeah… these ghosts from the zone, they’re like energy beings… they have their own culture, government, laws, and lives. It’s like a world, like the inverse of this one. It’s very different. From what I understand, ectoplasm combines with a soul and makes them into this energy being, kinda like a second life. Cause you get all these different instincts and impulses. And……I know not all of the beings in this dimension started out on this side of reality, like they give birth, and some formed in the zone, so I guess not all of them had a different life.” Danny tried his best to explain, but it was hard. How do you explain an entire culture and world in a few words?
“Fascinating,” Spock replied.
“I’m taking it one of these ‘ghosts’ or energy beings sent you forward?” Kirk asked.
“Yeah…...there’s this ghost that’s a genie, she likes to grant wishes, but she twists them, and she gets stronger after doing this. She’s a pain to fight……they like to fight….but also I had to cause….she was causing trouble in my town……granted wishes left and right, like someone would ask for a dog, but she’d make this giant rabbit monster dog that would try to eat them…..”
“Is this common… a common ability?” McCoy asked, his tone of concern.
“Um…..everyone has abilities. I’d say her ability wasn’t common, at least not that I’ve seen. The common ones that everyone gets…. are invisibility, flight, and intangibility. Everything else varies, depending on all sorts of stuff.” Danny replied. He didn’t want to get into obsessions just yet. This was a lot to explain at one time.
“What did you wish for exactly, lad?” Scotty asked, generally curious.
“Um…. ok, understand I wanted to be an astronaut, and I didn’t know she was close by……I just….it was an off handed comment…. I just said I wish I could go to space…...I didn’t expect to get flung into the future.” Danny explained.
"Ensign Fenton," Spock inquired, a rare note of curiosity in his voice, "is invisibility the extent of your capabilities?"
Danny hesitated for a moment before admitting, "No, I can do lots of stuff."
Kirk held up one hand, stopping any further explanation. “I would also like a full report on all the abilities you possess and a demonstration, but we can get to that later. Danny, where are you from?”
“I’m from Amity Park, Illinois. I imagine you’re gonna look me up. Can you not tell me what you find? I’ve been avoiding looking at history stuff and what happened to my hometown. Or if I make it back or not…... I’ve been scared that I don’t.”
“You believe you’re not stranded here?” Spock asked.
“Um….well….there’s this one ghost….his name is Clockwork, his main ability has to do with time. He watches the timelines and corrects them when they go wrong. I figured he’d pluck me out and send me home. But he hasn’t, so maybe I’m supposed to be here. I hope he’ll get me home, or maybe I have to find my way to the zone and ask him that way. But he’s really hard to find if he doesn’t want to be found. I was hoping he’d send me home, cause talking to him can be annoying; he likes to say things in riddles.” Danny explained.
The senior officers were looking at him with looks of surprise and incredulous stares.
“We’re going to come back to that ensign. Clearly, you’ve lived an exciting life.” Kirk said. “But I promise we won’t tell you of any……spoilers…. but yes, it would provide a way to confirm your story.”
“Danny, it sounds like these beings had access to your town?” Scotty asked.
“Yeah, the portal my parents built was never shut down, so it provided an open doorway for them to get through….now not all of them are like this……most tend to stay in the zone…..but some would attack my town…..and since I was really the only one that could stand up to them…..I’d have to fight them.” Danny replied, thinking nothing of this.
“What about you’re parents?” Kirk asked.
“They didn’t know…... I was scared to tell them.”  Tears pricked at the corners of Danny's eyes. "They believed that all ghosts are evil, as something to be hunted down and destroyed. I wasn’t sure they would accept me.” Danny admitted, his voice shaking. “They already hated my ghost form…...they’d shoot at me….and try to capture me and talk about dissecting me and tearing me apart molecule by molecule.”
The four older men around him looked at him in horror at this.
“Kid…..I hope you know, we’d never do that to you…..that Starfleet wouldn’t do that, do you?” McCoy asked with slow, measured words. He’d love to give the kid's parents a good talking to and set them straight for the neglect and abuse they put their kid through.
“The whole ghost thing, it's not something everyone gets. And I didn't want to end up some science experiment or, worse, kicked out of Starfleet." Danny replied, tone sad.
McCoy sighed, his expression softening further. "Son, do you really think we'd do that to you? Starfleet is about embracing diversity and finding strength in our differences. You should've trusted us."
"Guess I messed up, huh?" Danny's shoulders slumped.
"Let's not focus on that," McCoy replied. "Now, tell me more about this 'ghost form' of yours. What does that mean?"
Danny rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh, basically, I can switch between my human and ghost forms. Basically, I present more of one biologically when I do this change.”
“Was this change drastically different than your human form?” Kirk asked, wondering if the kid’s parents didn’t recognize him, not that it would excuse the hunting of a sentient being.
“I mean…...it’s not too different… look-wise. I glow and have white hair and green eyes…... but I don’t look too different…... I think it was not something people would think is possible, so nobody made the connection.” Danny replied with a shrug.
“I think that’s enough for now……I’ll let you know of my decision later…...this is a lot to take in. In the meantime, Bones, keep Danny in medical for now until we get this sorted out.” Kirk focused his attention on Danny again. “Will you let McCoy do an in-depth DNA and physical examination?”
"Yes, Captain," Danny agreed, his shoulders slumping slightly in resignation.
"Let's work on creating a baseline for your normal, shall we?" McCoy suggested, trying to put Danny at ease. "It might be slow going since you don't know all the details yourself, but it's important that we understand your unique physiology."
Danny nodded, swallowing hard. "Yes, sir."
"You're safe here. I promise we'll take good care of you," McCoy told him, patting his arm.
The boy offered a tentative smile. "Thanks, I appreciate it."
McCoy nodded to Kirk, Spock, and Scotty as they left. He turned to his young patient and said firmly, "Now then, let's start getting a baseline..."

How AI is Changing Jobs: The Rise of Automation and How to Stay Ahead in 2025
AI and Jobs
Tumblr media
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere. From self-checkout kiosks to AI-powered chatbots handling customer service, it’s changing the way businesses operate. While AI is making things faster and more efficient, it’s also making some jobs disappear. If you’re wondering how this affects you and what you can do about it, keep reading — because the future is already here.
The AI Boom: How It’s Reshaping the Workplace
AI is not just a buzzword anymore; it’s the backbone of modern business. Companies are using AI for automation, decision-making, and customer interactions. But what does that mean for jobs?
AI is Taking Over Repetitive Tasks
Gone are the days when data entry, basic accounting, and customer support relied solely on humans. AI tools like ChatGPT, Jasper, and Midjourney are doing tasks that once required an entire team. This means fewer jobs in these sectors, but also new opportunities elsewhere.
Companies are Hiring Fewer People
With AI handling routine work, businesses don’t need as many employees as before. Hiring freezes, downsizing, and increased automation are making it tougher to land a new job.
AI-Related Jobs are on the Rise
On the flip side, there’s massive demand for AI engineers, data scientists, and automation specialists. Companies need people who can build, maintain, and optimize AI tools.

The Decline of Traditional Job Offers
AI is shaking up industries, and some job roles are disappearing faster than expected. Here’s why new job offers are on the decline:
AI-Driven Cost Cutting
Businesses are using AI to reduce operational costs. Instead of hiring new employees, they’re investing in AI-powered solutions that automate tasks at a fraction of the cost.
The Gig Economy is Replacing Full-Time Jobs
Instead of hiring full-time staff, companies are outsourcing work to freelancers and gig workers. This means fewer stable job opportunities but more chances for independent workers.
Economic Uncertainty
The global economy is unpredictable, and businesses are cautious about hiring. With AI improving efficiency, companies are choosing to scale down their workforce.

Preparing for an AI-Driven Future
Feeling worried? Don’t be. AI isn’t just taking jobs — it’s also creating new ones. The key is to stay ahead by learning the right skills and adapting to the changing landscape.
1. Learn AI and Data Analytics
The best way to future-proof your career is to understand AI. Free courses on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and Khan Academy can get you started.
2. Develop Soft Skills AI Can’t Replace
AI is great at automation, but it lacks emotional intelligence, creativity, and critical thinking. Strengthening these skills can give you an edge.
3. Embrace Remote & Freelance Work
With traditional jobs shrinking, freelancing is a great way to stay flexible. Sites like Upwork, Fiverr, and Toptal have booming demand for AI-related skills.
4. Use AI to Your Advantage
Instead of fearing AI, learn how to use it. AI-powered tools like ChatGPT, Jasper, and Canva can help boost productivity and creativity.
5. Never Stop Learning
Technology evolves fast. Stay updated with new AI trends, attend webinars, and keep improving your skills.

Higurashi Month 2025, Day 8: Serenity
Prompt archive: AO3
Rain streamed down the grey windows in transparent veins, now thickening, now thinning, as the wind beat the storm against the sturdy walls of the Furude house.
Satoko, well-tucked-in against any mere inclement weather, sighed in satisfaction as she nestled into the comfy armchair, a knitted blanket swathed around her shoulders, another pulled over her knees, and a mug of fragrant tea cupped loosely in her hand.
Both blankets were some of her earlier efforts, as she'd picked up the hobby from Shion when she'd heard about Satoko and Rika's plans to go traveling after graduation. Satoko had infinite patience when it came to her traps, but she was infamously terrible at simply sitting and waiting for no reason, and knitting would go a long way towards keeping her occupied.
So she'd learned to knit, and found it enjoyable enough to keep with her as she and Rika traveled the world. Doing so on a meager budget meant nothing to either of them; was it not enough to go, and to see? St. Lucia's had made neither of them as soft as that, and so they often rattled together in third-class coach buses and endured the whims of fourth-rate trains on their way to their destinations.
But how could that matter, compared to the breathtaking smile that lit upon Rika's face when they climbed the Tibetan mountains? They left off the mighty Everest –neither of them were so foolhardy or so arrogant as that– but these mountains were the spine of the very world, inching taller with each grinding year the tectonic plate that bore then shunted upwards: what world trip would miss them?
And the national parks of China, and of India, and the marvels that rolled beneath them as they wound their way across the landscape… Satoko felt sated in her very soul, to have witnessed such wonders.
It was not all glory, either: they had plenty of adventures among their dirt-cheap accommodations, and even more using the only valuable piece of luggage either of them possessed: Rika's expensive luxury camera. Everything else could and frequently was jettisoned, save for their passports –and, usually, their money– but the camera stayed, a faithful companion and obedient biographer upon their journey.
If not for the glee Rika took in every step of travel, Satoko might think that this was an apology for locking her away behind the high-class gates of St. Lucia's for the past few years. Every day was another saga, bringing new sights, new smells, new sounds, new challenges: it was the closest thing to paradise her mind could imagine, and never mind the hardships of travel.
Their club did not raise mere warriors –it created veteran campaigners, hardened survivalists who could make it a week in the mountains alone with nothing but a twig for supplies. Between that and St. Lucia's wealth of high-class skills, there was nothing either of them could not face.
When they were traveling through India and lost all their bags –lost everything except the camera, because it was hanging on a satchel with its rolls of film at Rika's side– neither of them had more than a moment's flicker of concern. Satoko did some street busking, showing off her trap expertise for spare cash, and Rika offered the exquisite tailoring skills she'd learned at the academy to a local theater mistress in exchange for clothes to change into.
They finished that leg of their trip in outdated historical costumes, using spare change to scrounge up food and sleeping under the stars, and it had been the most amazing experience of Satoko's life.
When they had been in Russia and an alumnus from St. Lucia's had recognized them and invited them over for lunch at her luxury hotel, they had both been ready. They'd crowded into the ratty little bathroom of their cheap motel and brushed and styled each other to within an inch of their lives with combs, tap water, and gas station perfume, then attended the crowded gala in pawnshop dresses and jewelry –and never put a foot wrong. Their manners were impeccable, their outfits appreciated by all, and they'd spent the rest of their time in that city being put up in a hotel suite for free by their appreciative acquaintance.
But for all the fun and freedom of travel –and it had been, all of it, worth every minute– Satoko was more than glad to return home at the end. It had been exhausting, in no small part, even when they were filled to the brim with nearly every wondrous sight the world could hold. Diving with sharks, riding across prairies, hiking mountains, touring cities –they had done it all, and more besides.
But now at last, tired and replete with golden memories that would last a lifetime, they had come home. Rika sat across from her, nursing her own steaming mug and likewise sighing her contentment as the two of them melted into their armchairs and listened to the sighing rain outside. She had pages upon pages of developed film to show their friends, stacked in thick folios the width of a good-sized phonebook on the hall table.
Perhaps later they might write up an autobiography of their adventures, and stick some of the choicest photos inside, for it made quite the tale to tell, and they had joked about doing so through some of the more unique portions of their trip.
But for now… yes, for now they were simply home.

Murder by Memory
Tumblr media
Murder by Memory by Olivia Waite
another banger novella, i have been reading so many of those lately! Tor has really brought them back into fashion in a big way. and this one is so charming!
this cozy mystery takes the intimate village setting of something like Murder, She Wrote and transposes it to space, aboard a sort of generation ship—but rather than actual generations living and dying and being born on the long journey from earth to another habitable planetary body, the passengers aboard the HMS Fairweather are able to preserve and update copies of their minds in the ship's library, and live out as many lifetimes as they desire in successive clones of their own bodies. a REALLY interesting way to get around the length of the journey, to me, and it creates an even more intense insularity among the communities on the ship, with even more time together to forge relationships and make enemies and hatch schemes. i could have happily read a much longer book exploring more of the ship and its residents, and hopefully it will continue to be the setting for more installments!
and of course, a cozy mystery has to have a delightful detective narrator—in this case Dorothy Gentleman, who wakes up after several years of unembodied rest in a body that isn't hers, and is called upon to untangle a murder committed during a magnetic storm. i adore her! her curiosity, her intelligence, her love for textile arts, her buttoned-up affection for her nephew Ruthie and his new partner John, her commentary on the attractiveness of every woman she encounters...she's the queer Miss Marple i didn't know i needed. i'm already shipping her with the suspicious hot blonde who owns the yarn store, in my mind she looks like Coronabeth Tridentarius.
this was a quick, compelling, engaging read, with delightful characters and an intriguing web of mystery. also, a very cute ship's AI!
the deets
how i read it: an egalley from NetGalley yet again!
try this if you: dig a classic first person detective pov, love sci-fi twists, read mysteries more for the characters than to actually put the puzzle together yourself (though i think you can figure out most of it as you read, i just don't read mysteries that way), or just are really here for a queer elderly mind walking around being nosy and British in a new and unfamiliar young body.
some lines i really liked: relatable moments
"Here now, John," my nephew harrumphed. It was a completely unthreatening, thoroughly aspirational sound, like a puppy trying to learn how to swear convincingly.
---
Was there anywhere better than a yarn store? And this one was exceptional, just organized enough to feel controlled but full of enough color and texture to be a riotous sensual feast. From the threshold I was lured forward by delicate skeins of mohair and long twists of tweed, soft woolens and shimmering silks in everything from vivid rainbows to elegant neutrals. Needles in various sizes, straight and circular, filled a row of glass jars on the wall, commodities that doubled as decor.
---
Her eyes softened slightly. "I don't mean to cast aspersions upon your profession. I simply believe in being suspicious of power as a rule, especially when that power enshrines itself in law. The Fairweather exists to preserve a future for humanity—including our knowledge, inventions, and skills. And knowing how to circumvent the authorities is often a historically necessary skill." She shrugged, as if there were nothing left to argue.
pub date: March 18, 2025! go get it and read it and love it like i did!
