Hi-ho, Wudge here.

I'm gonna try to be rather more transparent than usual in this devlog because aiyaiyai... not gonna lie y'all, I've been feeling a bit disheartened. Not from any one thing! There's no bad guy boogeyman bringing me down! It's just like... woof, game development is a lot.

Some time ago, my country enacted some new policies that forced Paypal to make a lot of changes. I had to (or thought I had to??) get an actual business license and jump through a lot of hoops to make sure I'd still be able to receive and withdraw money from my Paypal account.

For the most part, it all worked out. I'm able to receive money from Ko-Fi and from taking commissions, and I'm able to send money to purchase Herotome's art assets (a new CG and backgrounds are coming along fantastically!)... but ever since the changes, itch.io has consistently had issues with my Paypal account.

I don't know why it's only them. I'm still trying to figure it out. I have a pending ticket with them right now to determine why my most recent itch.io payout has been in review for 65 days.

For a while I tried to switch itch's payouts to Payoneer, but Payoneer charges a yearly fee of $30.00 unless you receive $2,000/year on their platform. I don't have enough itch income to justify the cost.

So I've been trying to switch itch back to paypal and it's been... difficult. It shouldn't be so difficult. It feels shameful that people are trying to support me through itch's site, and their money either never reaches me or goes straight into payoneer's yearly fee.

But if I make a post on itch saying "Hey, itch isn't working well with me on the financial side, you can support me on Ko-Fi instead!"... then I have to draw and post more Ko-Fi expressions, and I'm already so behind on those.

You may be thinking "Well, forget about itch! You can put Herotome on steam instead!" but putting a game on steam also involves jumping through a lot of hoops - to the point where there's services that offer to do it for you (so you'll have to pay the steam fee and for the service).

... So I guess that's a big part of my stress and disheartening feelings right now lol, I have boogeymen after all and they are itch and paypal. But uh, I'm also struggling with feelings of the game feeling like a neverending Sisyphian task, no matter how much I write or how much progress I make, it's never enough...

You guys would probably enjoy playing what I'm working on right now though, right? I have to try and hold onto that thought. I have a few fun scenes mostly done. I don't have expressions coded for any of them...... but writing-wise, I think they're pretty good. Maybe I can hire someone to code in preliminary expressions. It'd be a lot of work for me to onboard, give them context and access to assets, but it could be worth it. I'll think it over

Uhhh. Okay, things I actually did last week -

I rewrote a scene to give Warden more agency; the player now gets a brief 1x1 scene to talk with him BEFORE the free time LI-selection section, and I think y'all will like it.

I also drew a new expression for nurse Jordan

This is how I feel about my payout drama with itch. Hahahaha. Ahh...

Hopefully my ticket gets resolved soon and everything works out smoothly from now on, so I can concentrate more on the actual game.

Who is.... Ralph Dibny | The Elongated Man? - A Reading Guide

Ralph Dibny is a powered superhero from DC Comics first introduced in 1960. Ralph gains his ability to stretch his body to comic proportions as a result of his chronic ingestion of what is basically an essential oil. Ralph's hero work is largely based out of Opal City (which is kind of a stand-in for Baltimore, MD). Ralph is best known for his membership with the Justice League of America, Justice League Europe, and the Croatoans. Ralph is a devoted husband to his wife Sue, has his own exhibit at the Flash Museum, and is one of, if not the best detective in detective comics!

Around the same time my blood pressure improved, Hubbins has started to develop high blood pressure. He’s otherwise healthy but it does worry me. Tonight Mandana was very persistent and used “intelligent disobedience” to alert him while he was actively trying to get her to leave him alone. Recognizing the alert for what it was, I tested his blood pressure and it was 177/74 😬

I’m so proud of Mandana for taking care of him. Even though she was never specifically trained for blood pressure alerts (I just reinforced her natural alert & response) and even though she was never trained to task for him and even though she’s been sick for over a month and even though he was actively trying to get her to stop alerting she persevered.

Mandana is such a special dog and was definitely rewarded for her efforts.

Background Story:

So her parents had kicked her out of the house and let her live off the street. She is fine with it because she can take care of herself. Until she forgot about where to LIVE.

Ola came in and took her in to live with him and his girlfriend, Noelani. He was furious at how their own parents would do this to a 17-year-old.

Ola had already talked with the Principal of the situation and wanted Alana to continue her classwork in school. Which he kindly accepted and let her continue to take her classes. There are some bad rumors about Alana but she ignores them and just focuses on her class.

After graduating, at the age of 18. Alana had given birth to a healthy baby girl. Thanks to Ola’s expertise on delivering babies.

She was very happy to see her baby girl. And she promised herself that she’ll do ANYTHING to protect her. So after 7 months of resting and taking care of her daughter. She decided to sign up for Military. Just to help out with the finance and also wanted to protect her home from the enemies.

Already enlisted and been serving in the Marines for 15 years and that’s when she’s a Lieutenant General. And that’s the year she had met one of Tiala’s older brothers. Hōne, Rangi and Kanoa.

Three most trusted soldiers that she had ever depended on. Even mostly Hōne. She saw how much potential he has and she trusted him to take this mission along with Rangi. Relating to trafficking.

The dealers were taking the children that they had kidnapped to be deported to Asia. That’s when she sent Hōne and Rangi to stop them.

She thought that everything went well from the mission. Until Rangi had come back with only Hōne’s dog tags. She was shocked and devastated. Guilt had climbed all over her when she found out about one of her best soldiers who had died under HER command.

She also experienced the same guilt of almost losing her other soldier. Tiala Toa. She knows that she is related to the three boys who had worked with her. And she had released her to rest for a while until she was back on her feet again.

Having all that guilt had made her take a lack of sleep, overworking and also didn’t keep in touch with her family.

Until she found out about her daughter already signed up for the military to be a medic. Which she is deeply proud of. And started to contact her sometimes and apologize for not keeping in touch. Which her daughter understands (such a sweet girl).

A few years later, Alana got an unexpected call. A call from the CIA of the US. It was Laswell. A long time old friend.

Asking for her help of assisting Price, Alex, Gaz and Farah to find the stolen Russian Gas.

Will she accept to send someone who has the skills to assist these people or will she deny this request so she doesn’t have to lose another of her men?

075: Avengers #61

The Saga of The Sons of Satannish ends, not in Doc's own magazine, but in the Avengers mag. Oddly this was released in the same month as Doc #177. The conclusion was published before the penultimate episode. Doc enlists the Avengers aid against the giant Norse demons Surtur and Ymir, released by Asmodeus. Let's see how they do.

While this is Doc's story, it's the Avengers book. After two giant pages to reveal the story's name we start in what I presume is Avengers Mansion. Vision is hungry and T'Challa gets the task of feeding him. And Roy is especially generous with the exclamation points and super bold words.

Vision, Black Panther and Hawkeye exchange some meaningless banter about the rock on Vision's head when Black Panther senses a presence.

After overreacting to Doc's ghost image they appear to be impressed. After Hawkeye calls Doc paleface, not realizing he's being racist, Doc enlists their aid to save the planet. They, of course, agree. Doc leads them to the Sons of Satannish graveyard and Doc's ghost goes back into his body. They all go into the mausoleum where they see The Black Knight laying on the ground, motionless.

It's a wonderfully cinematic image. Doc then recounts the events of Doc #178, not yet on sale. Finally, we find out how the Knight wound up in this state.

Despite having rescued the cult from the clutches of Tiboro, the ungrateful a**hole, Marduk, decided to show their appreciation by blasting the Knight with the crystal of conquest. Not nice! Doc blasts the crap out of Marduk and "encourages" him to tell them all they need to know. After seeing Marduk lying on the floor, Doc assures his companions that he's still alive. Black Panther re-enters the chamber carrying the Knight reminding them they must save his life before anything else.

The Knight needs surgery and the only Doctor nearby is Doc. What's a magician to do. Apparently pick up a scalpel and get to cutting. Oddly, no matter how many times Doc's background gets brought up this bit of potential medical malpractice never gets mentioned again.

The Vision bursts in to tell the group the stuff is really hitting the fan. Volcanoes are popping up in Antarctica while Wakanda is freezing over. The plan is thus. Doc will stay behind, contemplate the crystal of conquest and hopefully discern a way to fix the problem. Meanwhile, Hawkeye and The Black Knight head to Antarctica to shoot arrows in to a volcano while Vision and The Black Panther head to Wakanda to do something.

Vision and T'Challa arrive in Wakanda and see Ymir right away. They aim the Quinjet at Ymir's dead center and he bursts into millions of little ice shards. "That was easy!" the pair think. But Ymir has other plans. He puts himself back together.

Hawkeye and the Knight are now in Antarctica so Hawkeye and shoot his trick arrows into Surtur. They have no effect. The Knight swoops down and tries out his blade which goes right through the demon. Surtur then says "My sword is better than your sword!" and blasts the pair out of the sky. The Knight's horse, Aragorn, manages to save The Knight while he then makes a dramatic rescue of the archer.

Back in Wakanda, Vision attempts to melt Ymir with his solar powers. That does nothing and Ymir throws rocks at Vision, burying him. Black Panther then throws rocks back at Ymir while Vision extricates himself from the pile of boulders.

Back at Avengers Mansion (I think), Doc has figured out the crystal of conquest. The two teams continue to battle their prospective demons and Doc casts the spell. The two demons disappear from Wakanda and Antarctica. The reappear somewhere else face-to-face. Conveniently, the Avengers have gone with them.

The two demons pound on each other and cancel each other out. Doc arrives in astral form to close out the deal. Thus closes the Saga of the Sons of Satannish.

I think it's a good thing that they've started to include Doc in the larger Marvel Universe. This is the first time that a Doc story has reached out to another title. While Doc has previously crossed over to other titles, it was as a guest star and he was mostly a plot device. This is Doc's story and the Avengers are living in it. While Roy Thomas wrote both series at the time, we do miss out on Gene Colan drawing this crazy-weird chapter. Gene's rendition of Surtur and Ymir were quite impressive. While John Buscema's more traditional style works, it would have been nice to see Gene close out the arc. Like the last few installments, the story is a bit thin. Battles are stretched out to fill the allotted pages. Doc talks for nearly a page when he's conquering the crystal of conquest. The solution of having the demons defeat each other was still somewhat unique at the time and was a change from the Avengers physically beating their foes into submission.

It was well-known that humans had some of the best sight in the fourteen galaxy's; three colour receptors, surgeries to fix eyes that lost their capability, and they could.. see still things.

It was also well known, that some species relied more on other senses on their home planets; Ralknocs, Eveyishi, Ruls'wfar, etc. So a sight / hearing based universe had to make some adjustments for them. Among such adjustments, developed a type of job that species with better visual senses gladly took: that of a sight guide.

Now, a lot of sight guides were human; it was easy work, and paid well, and humans were much sought after for this. Or, that's what Asha kept telling herself on the morning of her first day. She passed the single-month course easily, and her tasks would be simple. She just couldn't help feeling kinda... depersonized. She felt like a dog, the type of dog blind people or autistic people have (Not that she has anything against those dogs, three of her cousins have them). She took a deep breath.

Her employer was part Eveyishi and part La'ori, and relied mostly on scent where they'd grown up on Rame'ri, the La'ori homeworld. They were young and just starting their first job on a starship. She'd been told they were 177 kle'esh, which was developmentally like being a 19 year old human. She'd calculated- 177 kle'esh was almost 15 Earth years. With all this in mind, she finally walked in. She was supposed to meet her employer now.

"Hello, I'm here to meet my new employer?", she said to the Kgrifu sitting at the reception. "Name?", xe said, not even looking up from xeir papers- oh, his papers. That was odd- every Kgrifu Asha had met so far went by xe/xem, it was their species standard. She'd heard of Kgrifu's with differing gender identities, but she hadn't met any before... She looked at the pronouns on the Kgrifu's name tag again before answering. "Natasha Zienend-Saga, but uh- I go by Asha."

After a few seconds, the Kgrifu looked up. "Okay Asha, your employer has been notified. Their name is Rari'a Ne'o'ria Fanrei, have you been briefed on them yet?" Asha nodded. "Okay. Here's their file, there are various human consumptives in the waiting area." Asha nodded and went to sit down. She didn't eat.

A few minutes later, two people entered the room. One was clearly La'ori: Green skin, no hair, vaguely humanoid form but very skinny, with four arms, an extra joint per arm, very different face formation, and no thumbs. The other was a visual combination of La'ori and Eveyishi: lighter green skin, tall, some fur here and there, four arms with a human amount of joints each, but the two lower arms were more like... like a bat's wings, kept close to their body. Asha looked at them as they walked over; Fanrei (Asha was assuming they were Fanrei) was visually stunning, such a beautiful mix of their species. She smiled up at them (making sure not to bear her teeth) as they approached, and stood up.

The La'ori spoke first. "Hello Saga. This is my child, Fanrei. I am only here to oversee the meeting go well." They spoke English! It was fascinating to listen to how the La'ori version of vocal cords dealt with English sounds designed for humans.. it gave it a sort of vibrating effect, a little shrill, without being grating. Asha had to work hard to make sure her teeth weren't showing- she'd grown up on Earth, where the intelligent species were 96% human. "Hello! It's, uh, it's actually custom to call humans by their first name, not third..? But, uh, it's lovely to meet you, Rari'a ... ?"

Fanrei's parent's mouth enlarged a little- something Asha had learnt meant something like surprise in their species. "I apologise, Natasha. I am Rari'a Ne'o'ria Naefeg. It is.. 'lovely' to meet you as well." Asha was trying not to swoon at the high-pitched tremors in Naefeg's voice. It sounded like late 21st century music, and it was unfairly hard to not smile way too widely. "Alright then.", she said, mainly just to say something. "Shall we head to the meeting room?", Fanrei said.

And shit. If Asha had been struggeling not to focus on Naefeg's voice, she was going to have an incredibly hard time listening to what Fanrei was saying, and not just the perfectly sweet, quivering, buttery, accented sound that just came out of their mouth. She really hoped she would get used to it at some point, or else it would really just be embarresing. She nodded and followed when Naefeg led the way, trying to focus again. This was a job. This payed well, and she was not gonna compromise this.

She was really in for something, huh? She smiled.

So, something I learnt the other day. So, you know how dinosaurs supposedly can't see you if you stand still? Well that myth is based on real-life lizards/etc and how eyes in general work. So, once my dad starts infodumping, here comes some other cool information. We, humans, can in fact, also not see something unless it's moving. We fixed this by having our eyes constantly shake. And then our brain compensates for us, so we don't have to have shaky vision.

What if aliens don't have this? Like. What if they find out when one of us was looking at something in the distance, and they walk around this thing that's in front of them, and the alien is confused so they bob their head and oh, there's a thing there, but how did the human know that, and then we explain and they're like, horrified.

Humans are apex predators. They can hunt in packs. They can hunt in pairs. They can hunt on their own. They're persistance predators, which is unheard of. They get stronger when they're mad or scared. They have this thing called 'body language' which acts like a type of hivemind, even if they'll claim it isn't. And. They can see you. When you're not moving. They can still see you. If you ever find yourself in a fight against a human, for whatever reason? Run. Run as fast as you can. And hope, pray if you have a religion, that they won't follow.
