Thinking again about the end of CoM as a metaphor for repressing trauma vs facing it to heal and grow as a person and I really just

It really does feel intentional that what Sora goes through in CoM — losing his memories and almost losing himself — is a lot like what Sora describes being a heartless was like: “I was lost in the darkness. I couldn’t find my way. As I stumbled through the dark, I started forgetting things — my friends, who I was… The darkness almost swallowed me.”

Both halves of CoM are visual representations of what Sora and Riku each went through when they fell/almost fell to darkness in KH1. Riku’s memories are devoid of people because he cast them from his heart. Sora’s memories are full of people he forgets because he sacrificed his heart. And if we are supposed to see CoM as a near-death journey/an exploration of the unconscious, it is pretty on point for Marluxia to have a grim reaper aesthetic. Sora’s battling death.

Anyway, that’s why Data Sora’s decision to accept the loss of the memories of his friends and face that pain in Coded, live with it, is so significant.

Because that’s what the real Sora failed to do in the real Castle Oblivion. He never should’ve forgotten what happened there. He should’ve accepted those losses — and the pain attached to them — knowing that even if he can’t remember his friends, they remember him. Even if he doesn’t know them, he remembers caring about them. And even if he can’t recall specific memories, they’re not gone. He’ll remember them, some day. And in the meantime, the people he loves will help him shoulder the burden.

In a figurative sense, Sora has never left Castle Oblivion because he’s never accepted this pain. He has never moved on past this point, unlike Riku who decides to face Ansem, the representation of his trauma, and leave the castle, leave the darkness, to begin walking the road to dawn — the road to recovery. Sora’s still there, still under that dark night sky.

And now, after sacrificing himself again, there’s a very real chance he’s forgetting things and losing himself again, and surprise, surprise — look where he is.

Tied to a new character whose name means “night sky” to boot… Trauma has a way of biting us in the butt when we don’t deal with it properly. The past has a way of chaining us when we don’t move forward… Sora’s gonna have to do it right this time. He’s gonna have to face his pain and accept it if he wants to step forward into the light and exist again.

farmer!price has mainly sons. little boys always helping out on the farm, gasping when the pigs begin squealing and the birds make their call. takes such good care of them, and you as well. the boys love their mother; running up to you while covered in mud, overalls coated in brown sludge, giving in and hugging them tightly.

simon is a with the farmer concept is hard. i can't imagine it, i can imagine him working down in the bar down in the village, you joining along, or being his little housewife. wearing long dresses, and coming to him with your toddler boy and girl, giving them some sweets so they'll be alright and talking with your confident, funny husband.

(trying with the farmer!simon concept) who smokes a lot and always stinks of tobacco after a hard day. his little boy and older daughter (2 year difference between them) giggling with eachother, watching as she protects him. he's so proud of her and always makes time to help with her homework after breaking his back taking care of the carrots and cabbages.

farmer!soap who has 2 daughters. they're his princesses, and he'll do whatever it takes to keep them safe. walking with them, hand in hand, sent down to the village for fruits and vegetables by their mother. helping you make some blueberry pie for your husband after a long day. his daughters falling asleep at the dinner table with blueberry pie all over their faces.

farmer!gaz who has daughters. he treats them like angels, and appreciates when they help with the animals. i imagine his daughters to enjoy helping on the farm when they're a teenager; taking care of chickens and bringing back eggs, or getting hay on their jeans and t-shirt. spends a lot of time with them and they all appreciate his work.

farmer!könig has only daughters, i can't imagine him with daughters, at all. has a lot of daughters, perhaps 5, or maybe a pair of twins. they're so cute when they're toddlers; falling asleep on their daddy's lap, and getting their faces messy with cheesecake after dinner.

he's an amazing dad, and loves reading to them before bedtime. has an album of photos of them from their younger ages, and sometimes fell asleep on the rocking chair when they were newborns and woke up crying.

farmer!alejandro has daughters too, no son's for him. he definitely treats them like princesses and loves how sweet they are. makes funny jokes, and is very overprotective of them. oh, his daughter wants to go down to the village? no matter if she's a teenager, she's not going alone. if she waits for him, he'll buy her a ice-cream and allows her to help with the cows despite his constant scolding for asking! don't worry, he'll handle it.

farmer!rodolfo who has 1 daughter (i'm sorry, i can barely imagine half of these characters with son's!!) he lets her help on the farm and always appreciates her help. doesn't want to force her, but allows her to clean the pigs and take the eggs back to the house for her mother to use. when she was a baby, he'd kiss her every night and sit on a rocking chair beside the fireplace, lulling her to sleep and teaching spanish to her in her older years.

farmer!graves who has 3 sons, and his youngest, a daughter. they all look like him when he was younger; 3 replicas. his daughter has gorgeous, soft blonde hair and his blue, silverish eyes. not only does he treat her like a princess, he refuses to allow her to work on the farm.

— encourages his son's to help him on the farm, while she plays with barbie dolls on the porch and eats any freshly baked cookies her mother made. her brother's are around 9, and a pair of twins, 8 when she's 3. a sweetheart who has a pure, giving heart and always makes her father little cards or paper people using his old newspapers.

Yes, it does. I want to talk about Vaggie in other metas too, so in this analysis I will focus on her relationship with Carmilla, since this is what you are mainly asking about.

Before I start, though, I am gonna link to you this meta by @hamliet, where she talks about the main message of the song:

You're gonna fight without gloves And when that push comes to shove Yeah, you just might rise above Long as you're out for love

If you love, you might rise above. So Vaggie, a fallen angel, regrows her wings by choosing love and protection over hate and revenge. The meaning is crystal clear. Love makes you worthy of Heaven. Just like in the finale Pentious ascends thanks to his selfless sacrifice.

This is the meaning of the song when it comes to theme and to the series as a whole.

At the same time it is not by chance this theme comes out so strongly in relation to Carmilla and Vaggie, as they are both tied to "love".

FAMILIAL LOVE AND ROMANTIC LOVE

Carmilla Carmine: So I, I'll be your keeper Do whatever it takes, I'll make the mistakes I'll keep you safe and keep this secret

Vaggie: So I, I'll be your armor Do whatever it takes, I'll make the mistakes I'll spend my life being your partner

Carmilla and Vaggie are set up as foils in episode 3, when they share the song Whatever It Takes. This ballad is a love song, but Carmilla and Vaggie express two different kinds of love:

Carmilla is singing to her daughters (familial)

Vaggie is singing to Charlie (romantic)

This is a pattern throughout the show:

There are two versions of More Than Anything - the first one is about a familial bond, whereas the second explores a romantic relationship

Sir Pentious gets redeemed after expressing his feelings for Cherri (romantic) and sacrificing himself for the Hotel Crew (familial)

So, Hazbin Hotel goes out of its way to celebrate all kinds of positive bonds: platonic, romantic, familial. All of these relationships are enriching and help people grow. Vaggie and Carmilla are two characters linked to this very concept, as they are ready to fight and suffer for their loved ones:

Both: Whatever we go through I know I~ (Carmilla: I'll be your keeper) (Vaggie: I'll be your armor) Whatever it takes (Carmilla: I'll make the mistakes) (Vaggie: I'll make the mistakes) Whatever it takes

They are both warriors, but fight for love. They are out for love. However, Whatever It Takes also highlights a major difference between them.

TRUST AND SELF-EXPRESSION

Scrambled Eggs is an episode about trust. This is true especially for Carmilla and Vaggie, who have opposite secrets:

Carmilla killed an angel

Vaggie is an angel

Throughout the song the conflict between Heaven and Hell is mentioned by Carmilla and is present in subtext in Vaggie's stanza, as she looks at her old home.

Both are struggling under the pressure of these truths and are confronted by a loved one:

Zestial: Carmilla, what troubles thou? Losing thy composure is unlike thee. Carmilla Carmine: It's nothing, Zestial, really.

Charlie: Vaggie, don't say that! You do so much! It's- Vaggie: I'm sorry. I'd… I'd like to be alone for a minute.

Carmilla chooses to open up to Zestial and tells her daughters how much she loves them. Vaggie instead closes herself off and refuses Charlie's attempt to talk. She is singing to Charlie, but Charlie herself isn't present to hear her out. Even when it comes to their respective secrets...

Carmilla says hers in the song:

Carmilla Carmine: I always thought that I would keep blood off my face But when that thing attacked, I had to act To cross that line and keep them safe But if anyone knew, then all of Hell would rise to war And who's to say who'd survive the fray? I might lose the ones that I was killing for

Vaggie only alludes to hers in the lyrics:

Vaggie: When I saw your face You made me feel like a stranger in a brand new place And it felt so good to be understood But there's so much I wished that I could say

Vaggie meets Charlie and feels like a stranger in a brand new place because at the time she is in fact a stranger in a brand new place:

So, Carmilla is able to express herself, while Vaggie can't. This isn't surprising, as Vaggie is basically a child-soldier:

Adam: Do you really think I wouldn't recognize one of my top girls just cuz you're out of uniform? You were on the front lines, I wouldn't forget a bad bitch like you. It's why I named you after the best thing ever. Vaggie.

She is brought up in Adam's army and is taught that love is conditional. She is one of Adam's best fighters, but the moment she makes a "mistake", she is discarded:

Lute: Sinful filth like you has no place in heaven.

This is why she feels Charlie will love her only if she is useful and never messes up:

Vaggie: I'm supposed to make your dreams a reality. I'm supposed to protect you. I'm supposed to never fail you. (...) If I can't help you, what's the point of me?

This fear of abandonement and rejection is also at the root of Vaggie's inability to tell Charlie about her past:

Adam: I guess I'll just tell little miss butterflies and rainbows that she's been fucking someone who's killed-- thousands of her people. I'm sure your relationship will be fine.

Still, despite her communication issues, Vaggie's heart is in the right place:

Rosie: If there's anything I've learned, it's that words are cheap, but actions, they speak the truth. So, what have her actions said?

Vaggie is a person of few words. This may be why she has less songs than other characters. Still, she lets her actions speak, so she is given a ballet lesson by a very talented ballerina:

DANCING THROUGH LIFE

Carmilla has a ballet motif, as her outfit resembles that of a ballerina and her two daughters are called after protagonists of famous ballets. So, it is only natural that she teaches Vaggie a new way to fight through dancing.

Vaggie was taught to fight with hate and anger. So, her fighting style is aggressive and focused on attack:

Carmilla: You leave yourself open with every swing. You fight like someone unafraid of harm, and this is what you'll take advantage of. Angels wield no shields, little armor and fight with reckless abandon.

Carmilla tells her she should instead dedicate herself to love, protection and defense:

Fuel yourself with the fear of losin' That somebody who's your reason to live Harnеss your heart and you can't help choosin' To fight with all you can give

Vaggie shouldn't just fight. She should dance:

She shouldn't hate:

I see you're driven by your detestation Your every step is stoked with animus You need a different type of motivation Or there's no way that you can handle this

She should love:

Out for love~ Love~ Think of who you care about Protect them and be out For love~ Love~

Vaggie listens to these teachings and applies them in the finale, in two ways.

She sings her love for Charlie in More Than Anything Reprise:

Vaggie: You've already done so much So many lives you've changed So many souls you've touched And in the end, if it's only me you've saved Charlie and Vaggie: There's something that I've been dying to say More than anything, more than anything Need you to know I love you more than anything More than anything

As stated above, Vaggie doesn't sing much in season 1, but in the final episode she gets a short moment to express how she feels to Charlie. This is in contrast to Whatever It Takes, where she sends her girlfriend away before she starts singing. More Than Anything Reprise shows Vaggie's progress when it comes to self-expression.

She follows Carmilla's advices while fighting

On a practical level she covers herself up in a battle suit inspired by Carmilla's outfit, she wears a harness on her heart and ties her hair:

Vaggie: I'm not used to fighting with long hair.

On a thematic level she reveals her wings and defeats Lute, when the exorcist threathens Charlie:

Lute: So, I'll spare you the pain of seeing your demon bitch die.

And Vaggie eventually chooses not to kill the other angel:

Lute: Do it, then. Correct your mistake. Vaggie: Seriously, you're pathetic, you know that? Ready to die rather than accepting mercy? No, live. Live knowing that you only do because I let you, the failure.

Vaggie is asked to choose between her hate for Lute and her love for Charlie and she chooses the latter. This is why the scene ends with Vaggie leaving Lute and flying to help Charlie. She is given the chance to get revenge, but doesn't take it. She is given the chance to hate, but she loves:

I know you're thirstin' for vengeance, Vaggie You're out for blood But you'll only stand a chance if you're out for love

This is important in two ways:

1- The macrochosm - Vaggie refuses Lute's ideals and defies her expectations. For Lute it is normal that Vaggie is going to kill her. After all, Vaggie is discarded because she shows pity to a sinner, which makes her weak. Still, Vaggie bests Lute in a fight, so she is now strong. It is only obvious then that Vaggie has snapped out of her foolery and is ready to kill. She can correct her mistake. She did not kill the cannibal child, but she can kill Lute. This is how Lute understands the world. And yet, Vaggie doesn't finish her off. By doing so, she moves away from the mentality Lute embodies. She is strong precisely because she can show mercy. Adam is wrong. Lute is wrong. Vaggie isn't out for blood. She is out for love.

2- The microchosm - Vaggie sparing Lute isn't just the morally correct choice, but it is Vaggie's first step into healing:

Husk: (To Vaggie) This one. Judges everyone and everything because she hates herself.

Vaggie hates everyone because she deep down hates herself. She despises Heaven and Angels because she can't forgive her involvement in the exterminations. So, Vaggie hurting Lute would be Vaggie hurting her past self. As a matter of fact Lute is Vaggie's dark mirror. She is who Vaggie might become if she gives in to hate.

A person who hurts others:

And herself:

Vaggie instead has to value her life, so that she can protect others. She must save others and heal herself. Only in this way she can be by Charlie's side. She needs to let go of self-hate to embrace a healthy love. Vaggie's arc is her learning self-love through her bond with the Princess of Hell.

Obviously this journey is just at the beginning and our Angel of Love has a long way to go. How will her story contiue? We can make some hypothesis, which once again stem from Vaggie and Carmilla's foiling. This is just a theory, so take it with a grain of salt, but Vaggie may have a secondary personal antagonist in Hell:

Why is that so? It's because Scrambled Eggs sets Vaggie and Velvette up as foils.

RESPECT(LESS)

Velvette and Vaggie are opposites in their interactions with Carmilla. Both girls are younger than the Dancer Overlord and could learn a lot from her. However, Velvette refuses any kind of mentorship and shows no respect:

Velvette: Mad that I acted respectless? Well, it's cause no one could respect this! You're long past trending! Sorry, bae, but I ain't swiping right! You've lost your relevance-

Vaggie instead comes to respect Carmilla and learns from her:

At the same time, both Velvette and Vaggie confront Carmilla about her secret:

Velvette: 'Oops!' Did I strike a nerve? 'Cause when I brought out the angel's head, couldn't help but observe, that your wrinkled face was turning red! And why are you avoiding war? That's what the guns you sell are for! Thanks to my being respectless, one thing I'm starting to suspect is You know why this angel's headless! Do you have a disclosure?

Vaggie: I know what you did on extermination day. We can talk about it inside, or I can yell about it out here.

They call Carmilla out on killing an angel and keeping this knowledge to herself. Not only that, but both argue that it is necessary to fight back to stop the exterminations:

Velvette: We found it during Extermination day. If these Holy Rollers can be killed, the game has changed. We can take the fight to them. The boys and I have come up with a full assault plan!

Vaggie: Miss Carmine, I'm here on appointment from the princess to enlist your aid in the defense of hell from the angelic extermination. We know an angel fell at your hands and we need to know how.

Still, Velvette fails to get through to Carmilla because she uses war rhetoric:

Velvette: Oh, I get it. So Grandpa is too pussy to fight, so I guess there's no point, right? Oh, what's the matter, Fossil? Too senile to make a real power grab...

She speaks of violence, strength and power.

Vaggie instead convinces Carmilla to help because she mentions the necessity to fight for loved ones:

Vaggie: We didn't pick this fight, but it's here now. And they aren't going to stop with us. You didn't see the look on their leader's face. With us out of the way, it's only a matter of time before they come for the rest of you. They won't stop until all of hell is wiped out, so you can help us make a stand here together, or you can stand alone tomorrow.

She speaks of protection, love and comraderie.

In short, Vaggie succeeds where Velvette fails. Of course, this is true for Charlie's group in general when it comes to the Vees:

Vox: My dear people! We at VoxTek Enterprises have always been at the forefront of innovation. And now, with this new oncoming threat, we are shifting our focus, to your protection. We are pleased to announce VoxTek Angelic Security is coming soon! Trust us, with YOUR safety.

Katie Killjoy: Breaking news - Extermination day is cancelled! Charlie Morningstar managed to fend off the angelic attack with more than just nice words.

The Vees make big declarations of how they are gonna protect the people of Hell, but in the end it is Charlie and her friends who fight for the sinners.

When it comes to Vaggie and Velvette specifically, it is going to be interesting if their foiling is expanded. If so, then I guess Velvette is gonna help Vaggie mature a little bit more, so that when our ex exorcist faces Lute (her nemesis) again, she is gonna be ready for it.

miles thinks about it each and every day, worries about what may happen to him. he knows what will happen to him, that this problem runs rampant in the military, that humans are still their filthy selves, taking and taking and taking. he knows when it happens, spider will get no justice, no apologies, no support; hell, depending on who it is, they might use that machine to turn his brain to mush or better yet, they'd kill him and make sure no one found his body. miles knows and it terrifies him, that his baby boy, innocent to the horrors of the world.

spider was na'vi in mind, he didn't understand something like this, like rape. the na'vi didn't even have a concept close to it, outside of human greed and he didn't even understand the basics of it; lying, hunting for fun, squashing bugs just for the sake of it. spider wouldn't even understand what happened to him, when, it happens. miles knew that's what would break his son, feeling that pain and not even being able to understand it, put a word to it, conceptualize it.

he tries to explain it, tries to explain the filth of the human race, their immoral lack of self-control, the savagery they are capable of. he hates having to imply it would be spiders fault, that his lack of clothing makes it ok, hates having to put that guilt on his son. it disgusts him, that spider is this young and has to worry about this, that his perfect innocence has to be destroyed. he tries over and over again to find the words, to get over himself and just say it, but he can't. the part of him that against any and all better judgment wants to scoop his boy up and run away, hole him and his squad up somewhere no one will ever find them, protect him with every primal instinct burning him up like an egg on a Georgia sidewalk in the middle of July; that part of him, couldn't break his boy like that, couldn't just spit out the truth not even to protect him.

he tries to always be with him, to never let anyone hurt him, but every day he gets more and more scared he will fail. so he forces spider to wear human clothes, only when he's inside and around the inhabitants of the lab, but spider still hates him for it. the kid would never fully grasp it, not without experiencing it, and miles would take his son cussing him out and shooting glares over that any day, so that's fine. he makes sure to take spider out more often, finds reasons to keep his son in the field even when he himself has to go back in to deal with ardmore, he's never forced to wear his human disguise for more then a few days at a time. miles promises that boy that he will move heaven, earth, pandora, wherever he thinks he's going when he dies, whatever he has to, to keep him safe.

but even with spider in the oversized t-shirt and baggy cargo pants, he still see's a little boy who human filth will lust after. now that he feels this fear, the pain of it wringing his gut, it will never stop. he worries about his baby boy every single day, longs to let him live in a world where the amount of skin he shows won't get him killed or worse. every day he continues to work as some sort of dog, follows every command, finishes every task, fights day in and day out to protect his son from the very company that is a threat to his safety, his innocence, brings him one step close to just leaving, following that gut instinct to just run and hide. maybe he will.

Random idea, but the issues with Carmilla Carmine and Vaggie having little to no character development could have easily been fixed by having Carmilla be Vaggie's adopted mom.

The biggest issue with Carmilla is that she is given a lot of screen time and 2 songs for little payoff. The biggest issue with Vaggie is that outside of her relationship with Charlie, there's not much else to her. By creating a connection between these two characters, it fixes both of these issues, plus provides a much needed connection between the Overlords and the hotel group.

Carmilla hiding the fact that her angelic weapons can kill angels would be plot relivant because the knowledge could be used to hurt her daughter (or out her as an angel seeing as her blood would be the main tell.) It would also tie Carmilla into the main plot more because her daughter is a main character. Instead of the egg boys being the ones to bring her secret to the group, have Vaggie be the connecting line between those plot threads.

The main benefit of this change for Vaggie would be the added connection to Hell she would gain. In the Canon, she is maimed by the angels and immediately taken in by Charlie. While cute, this limits her connection to Hell to only Charlie. By having Carmilla find her (which makes sense as Carmilla collects angelic weapons after exterminations) this gives her an attachment to hell and its people. It also shows that demons can be just as compassionate as Charlie.

Vaggie keeping her angel status a secret from Charlie would make sense given that Carmilla would have insisted it be kept a secret no matter what. Vaggie does love and trust Charlie, but she wouldn't want to disappoint her mother. Plus it wouldn't be just her secret to keep. The idea that Carmilla is harboring an angel could create enemies for her and risk her overlord status.

It could also be the focus of their duet in episode 3, Carmilla promising to keep this secret to keep her angel daughter safe, and Vaggie reflecting that protective energy and doubling down on her commitment to Charlie as a partner, even if there is this secret between them. Transform the song from "Two seperste people really wanna protect their loved ones" to "a family struggles with the risk of dangerous information being leaked and how keeping their secrets is for the best to keep them safe despite conflicting viewpoints." It would also reflect how Carmilla impacts Vaggie's character, instead of them just being similar. (It could also be addressed in a way that keeps the angel!vaggie concept a secret if you really wanted to keep the episode 5 reveal)

This would also transform their "Out for Love" scene from basic training to Vaggie proving that she is strong enough to fight on the battle field with Charlie. Proving to her mother she can fight for herself and hell against the ones who cast her aside. That she is no longer a helpless angel but a powerful and determined denizen of Hell. This would make Carmilla's decision to supply the fight make more sense, as she has stakes in the fight now; her daughter is on the battle field. The song would probably need to be rewritten given the new context, but I feel like it would be worth it. Plus it would tie better into the plot.

Personally I don't care for Carmilla's character and role in the canon, but if she were Vaggie's adopted mom!? She'd be one of my favorites for sure! The depth of character added by that one fact would be my favorite part of the show.

At the end of S5, is Claudia still the same person as she claims to be in the last episode? Puzzle house has her the soul that can reveal the a map based on the character of her soul... Would the map still reveal itself?

So Claudia's identity is a loaded concept, both in terms of how she sees it and in terms of how other people (particularly the princes, Viren, and Soren) see it as well. I forget whose tags it was, but I remember someone going off on a delightful tag tirade of how Claudia is someone who is absolutely, extremely attached to being able to see herself as a Good Person. (Which like, most people are - but if you're too attached to that idea, any failings to live up to that can easily be brushed off, particularly if you don't have the self awareness or self compassion to cope with the reality of what you've done - but a post/tangent for another day)

She's not bending her morals to do dark magic because she never sees anything wrong with dark magic in the first place. What she does or threatens to do to elves/dragons doesn't matter because they (as individuals tethered to a group association in her mind) aren't people (with Terry and Aaravos, conveniently the two elves who are helping her, as the exceptions) and they Deserve it.

This isn't how she sees things when she's a child, in The Puzzle House, around the ages of 5-7ish, and we see her struggle with aspects of identity: doubting whether she ever really knew Kpp'Ar ("I thought I knew who he was. And then he disappeared") and of herself: I’ve been messing things up, and everyone’s angry at me. What if they’re right? What if I’m… not good?"

Which gets us into the weeds of S1, in which the egg - motionless, voiceless - is not a person and not even a creature, but a thing and a weapon, and her dad took it to Protect them, so keeping it isn't evil. She's not evil. She's just trying to do the Right Thing and bring the princes home (where they'll be safe, as far as she knows). She just wants to keep her family together, therefore:

Which really just shows that Claudia can and does hold herself accountable for her actions ("I know this feels like a betrayal" to illusion Callum in 2x03 and "I'm so sorry" twice to Ezran in 2x09) but she is incapable of accepting any of the potential Consequences as justified, because she had a Good reason, didn't she?

The rigid, unwavering nature of her motivations - to keep her family, particularly centred around her father, Together - as well as her methods - dark magic and a certain amount of manipulation - are two of the reasons I've always said, Inherently, Claudia is the exact same person she was all way back in 1x02, suggesting the soul switching spell and having no capacity to fathom why it would make Harrow uncomfortable (unlike Viren). She very much is someone who is largely the same person as she always has been, but her circumstances have amplified many of her worst (and technical best) character traits because said circumstances have also become so extreme. She's just Worse - more of the Same.

Cause in a lot of ways, 2x03 isn't Callum seeing a brand new side of Claudia ("Now I feel like I don't know who she is" - Callum's Spellbook) even if that's what he believes is happening, but that he's seeing her clearly for the first time: a dangerous dark mage wiling to sever loyalties and do whatever it takes for her family/father. Mirrored, I think, by Viren having the same realization in 5x03, even if it's with horror and fear/love rather than betrayal and anger.

So I believe that Claudia wholeheartedly believes she's the same person, not solely because she says it outright, but also because of the consistent manifestation of her choices and motivations, and because believing she's the same - still believing that she's Good ("She kidnapped you and prince Ezran, how can she be good?" ask yourself that in an episode, Claudia) is crucial in how she justifies everything to herself.

She doesn't want Terry (or herself) to think of her as cruel. She's a good person. She's doing the Right Thing. She's on a righteous path. That's why:

Now, in regards to change, Soren has the most varied perspectives on his sister, which can and should be taken into account ("Claudia, you're changing too" / "I hope you're careful, Callum, cause [magic] can change people" / "It's not too late Claudia, I know you can change!"). So it's not that she hasn't changed at all as a person, it's just that her Fear of Change and Choice, and her adamant resistance to ever radically changing her worldview because of new information is like, dead on arrival, and we haven't had a turning point for that yet.

But yeah, if Claudia still has the scroll, it wouldn't surprise me if it wouldn't work for her post-killing the unicorn she found and/or would be extremely, extremely faint if it did show up for her anytime post-arc 1.

No reason she can't find her way back and actually start becoming someone fundamentally New, though

Chapter 9 - Kane's Element

(Warning: soft vore mentions, language, hitting, digestion mentions, etc)

Kane growled as the sound grew closer, his tail slowly wrapping around Aliyah's waist. Aliyah felt and looked up at him from behind.

"W-What is it?" She asked quietly, nervous by the tall Naga's shift in nature.

"I don't know. Stay here." He ordered, unwrapping his tail from around her and slowly making his way towards the enterance. Going just outside the cave where he left Aliyah, Kane went towards the rustling, growling lowly before a roughed up Mona tripped over her own feet, coming out of the bushes in front of him and landing on her face in the grass.

Seeing this, he paused, instantly dropping his growl and his guard.

"Mona? What are you doing this far out?" He snapped, clearly thinking she was stupid for having traveled so far from her village. Mona groaned before freezing in place as she sat up. Hearing Kane's low gruff voice, she shot up and blinked at him, causing the tall being to raise a brow in response.

"You..." She suddenly mumbled, seeming rather angry with him. Kane tilted his head slightly, not understanding the sudden mood change. In an instant, Mona lounged at Kane and clung onto his arm, trying to pull him down.

"You lied to me!! You said you could never hurt Aliyah! It was all just some cat and mouse game, wasn't it?!" She yelled, scolding him as Kane paused. Oh yeah. He'd forgotten Mona saw him swallow Aliyah earlier.

Kane thought before pushing Mona down with one swift motion, knocking her back down to the ground.

"I didn't hurt her. I did not lie." He said sternly, sighing and motioning for the blonde girl to follow him as he started to head back to the cave.

"W-What? But I saw yo-"

"Again. I did not harm her. I told you I couldn't and that was the truth. There are things in our anatomy that set you simple humans and us elaborate Nagas apart." He looked back at her as she trailed behind him from a safe distance, cutting her off midsentence. Mona rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.

"Yeah, right.. This is probably just another trick for you to get a free meal!" She snapped, making Kane growl to himself before they went into the cave. He stopped halfway and crossed his arms at Mona.

"That proof enough for you, brat?" He scoffed, motioning over to a peacefully sleeping Aliyah. Mona froze before tearing up, running over to her friend and gently shaking her awake.

Aliyah hummed softly, opening her eyes before blinking twice, wonderibg if her friend really was there. But before she could say anything, she had Mona's arms wrapped tightly around her, crying into her shoulder softly as Aliyah hugged back with a concerned look.

"Mona? What is-

"I-I thought you were dead! For real this time! How did you.. How are you.." Her friend sniffled, pulling away and wiping her nose on her own red sweater sleeve. Aliyah smiled and looked at Kane who still had his arms crossed.

"Kane would never hurt me, Mona. He was just setting up the scenario for the village and protecting me." She explained while gently wiping her friends tears.

"I told you. There are anatomy differences between creatures like me and you guys." Kane spoke up, finally coming over and sitting down next to Aliyah. Mona sniffed before looking up at him.

"L-Like what? How could that be safe?" She asked, not finding a single logical thought that would make a stomach safe for anyone or anything.

"It's a pretty simple concept to explain.. Female Nagas, obviously like snakes, lay their youngs in egg form. Male Nagas, like me, are built with two stomachs. An actual one in our tails for food, and a pouch where we can hold our young either before or after they hatch to keep them warm. It just happens to be placed where your human stomachs are... I simply used the pouch for storage during travel until Aliyah." He explained, running a hand through his hair before looking at Aliyah who nodded and smiled. Mona blinked, glancing at his tail before sighing and looking back at her friend.

"You're sure about this..?" Mona asked quietly, to which Aliyah nodded and smiled again.

"You have to think.. I've had Aliyah with me for almost a week. If I wanted to harm her, I would have." Kane told her sternly once more, trying to get his point across. Mona sighed and nodded, realizing he did have a point even if she didn't fully trust him yet.

"So.. You aren't coming back to the village, I assume? After what happened?" She asked, looking at Aliyah who nodded and rubbed the back of her neck.

"I can't.. That's why we did what we did. So I didn't have to go back and risk Kane being hunted again." She explained as Kane nodded. Mona groaned and facepalmed before running a hand through her hair stressfully.

"Well.. Will you at least still be here if I come back?"

"Should be. Unless someone out for him finds this place again..." Aliyah sighed. Mona nodded a bit before standing up and brushing herself off.

"Well.. I guess I'll head back. Please just be careful..?" She asked, looking at them as both Aliyah and Kane nodded in agreement. Mona nodded before leaving, her red sweater and bright blonde hair fading from view of the cave. Seeing this, Kane sighed and looked down a little. Aliyah saw and tilted her head slightly, a concerned look washing over her freckled face.

"What is it..?" She quietly asked, placing a hand on his tail ever so slightly. It was slight enough to not make him jolt but he did notice it nonetheless.

"Just.. I guess just mad at my younger self. But then again, even if I had different actions back then, I'd still be seen as a monster for 'this'." He snapped, gesturing a hand to his tail and claws. Aliyah frowned and thought before standing up, putting her hands on her hips.

"You know what? Maybe you are a monster. But you don't act like one. And that's good enough for me!" She confidently stated, holding her head up high as she talked. Kane smiled slightly at this and crossed his arms, nodding. Thinking, Aliyah paused, her arms dropping to her sides slowly. Noticing, he perked his head up and grew a confused look on his face.

"What if.. We found another village or maybe even a town. You have a human form, Kane! You could start fresh!" She exclaimed excitedly but the face of disgust Kane gave said it all.

"I'm not human, Aliyah. Plus, that human form is just a disguise. It's like people being in heels, I can't just stay in that form, it's hard to do for even an hour." Aliyah slowly frowned and thought more.

"I guess you have a point.. Maybe we could live around one then? Only go into the village or town if we really have to? Listen... I just want to be far away from my old village. As much as I love Mona, she doesn't need all this and we don't want you to be hunted anymore." Aliyah said, rubbing the back of her neck.

Kane thought about it for a few moments. Would it really be better to run away from all this? Staying and fighting appealed more to his nature but he knew Aliyah would try to stop him the second his mood switched up. Nodding slightly, all he could do was mumble simple and small.

"Fine..."

5 Goddesses for Modern Witches

Witchcraft and feminism walk hand in hand these days, and with the growing interest in both subjects, we’ve seen a resurgence in curiosity for the female deities of old. Women are rejecting the patriarchal male-centric religions and along with them, their gods. This is all very understandable and generally positive, but it’s only natural to still feel the need for a guiding entity to support us in our practice, and to turn to for help. It’s practically written into our dna by this point.

So, when we’ve waved goodbye to the gods who no longer serve us, if they ever did, who is there to fill the space?

Well, there a myriad of options, and it can seem overwhelming at first. Every culture and magical practice has a plethora of female deities, and each has her own characteristics and areas of specialty. There is also a lot of crossover and similarities between them, which can be comforting, and helps reduce the overwhelm. More on that at a later date.

To start with, here are 5 well known Goddesses who are fairly easy to research and find plenty of books, courses and articles on. I’ll include some further reading suggestions at the end to get you started.

Brigid

Also known as Brigantia, meaning ‘High One’, Brigid is a Celtic goddess specialising in poetry, art and crafts, and the magical art of prophecy and divination, so she’s a good one to turn to if you’re a writer or an artist, and useful to invoke when carrying out tarot work. Great for wives and mothers too, as she traditionally protects women, children and the home, so call on her when creating protection amulets or are in need of a little extra security. Healing is another of Brigids talents, so shes really a great all-rounder to start off with. Being a fire, or sun, goddess, invoke her by placing herbs, crystals, flowers associated with the sun on your altar, such as citrine, rosemary, sunflower or sunflower seeds, and including them in your spell work.

Demeter

Ancient Greek goddess of the harvest and fertility, great for gardeners, nature witches, herb growers. She protects plants, and ensures the fertility of the earth. The original nature goddess, in fact the first nature goddess to be included in the Greek pantheon, like nature itself she can both nurture and destroy, so approach with respect and caution. She’s also a goddess of the underworld, so could be helpful with shadow work and spirit work. Honour her on your altar with a corn dolly, a chalice of wine, a poppy flower or poppy seeds, or even an offering of a slice of bread.

Diana

Roman goddess of the moon, so powerful and well-loved that an entire ancient cult was built around her, if you work with the phases of the moon then she may just be your ideal companion. Also responsible for fertility and childbirth, invoke Diana when working spells for conception and safe birth. As goddess of the hunt and wild animals, she may also be your gal if you wish to protect the animals in your care. A dish of water, fruits, an egg, or a sprig of lavender would be appropriate offerings.

Freyja

As well as being an extremely popular girls name these days, Freyja is the Norse goddess of love and war (all’s fair in love and war and all that). Pigs are sacred to her, as her preferred mode of transport was an uncomfortable sounding boar with golden bristles. Hope she had sturdy underpants! She can help with matters of the heart, conflict issues, or be by your side during times of grief and bereavement. Decorate your altar with a jar of honey, primroses, an apple, or a pig figurine. Use mugwort in your tea or herbal spell pouches to commune with her.

Hecate

Of course I couldn’t leave out the goddess of witchcraft herself! Very popular with witches, for obvious reasons, this Greek goddess rules over magic and spells. Also the goddess of ghosts and necromancy, she can be a great help to those of us who work with spirits. Her name translates as ‘worker from afar’, entirely appropriate for a worker of magic! Get to know this powerful lady if you want to seriously powerboost your spell craft. Place frankincense, red wine, garlic, or black tourmaline on your altar.

Pokemon Worldbuilding Headcanons

Exactly what it says in the title. Some are based on the game, some on the anime, and some directly contradict both because the Pokemon lore is made up and your feelings don’t matter.

Biology

Pokemon heal faster when unconscious or asleep--thus, they faint easily from pain or exhaustion in order to recuperate.

During evolution, a Pokemon converts itself into energy and reforms itself. Evolution is optional, and a Pokemon can choose if and when it evolves. Evolution is triggered by both an environmental circumstance (ex: winning a battle), and by the Pokemon storing up energy over time until it has enough to transform.

Stress evolutions are when a Pokemon evolves prematurally in order to win a battle or when they’re in a life-or-death situation. This can result in the evolution being smaller than normal and possibly weaker as well.

“Trade evolutions” are a loose grouping of Pokemon that typically evolve when they start working with a new trainer. The exact reasons for the evolution varies by individual, and therefore can have multiple causes.

Ex: a Pokemon may evolve after it learns something from someone else. While the easiest way to achieve this is through trade, they may also evolve by training under a wiser, older Pokemon.

Trade evolutions are somewhat rare in the wild, but not unheard of.

Pokemon that evolve via stones cannot store enough energy to evolve naturally. The stones contain extra energy that they can tap into in order to aid in evolution.

Everstones work similar to sponges; they absorb the extra energy a Pokemon would normally store up to evolve, thus preventing them from doing so. They’re mostly used for medical purposes (as a Pokemon evolving when badly injured could worsen its injuries) and to help prevent stress evolutions in Pokemon that don’t want to evolve.

Pokemon types are based on the type of energy they utilize, rather than moves or appearance. Ex: Charizard is not dragon-type despite looking like a dragon because it doesn’t use dragon-type energy. New energies are discovered all the time and Pokemon are reclassified as needed.

Pokemon typing also changes as they (Darwinian) evolve. A Pokemon that’s normal/grass used to be normal-type, has started to gain grass-typing, and will eventually be only grass-type.

Humans are descended from Pokemon. They used to be psychic-type before becoming normal-type and then losing their typing all together. At this point they no longer are energy-based nor do they lay eggs, so they’re considered a separate-but-related family.

This is why some people still show psychic powers; those abilities never completely went away in some bloodlines.

Pokemon have been domesticated for so long that there’s actually no such thing as a “wild” Pokemon anymore (with the exception of legendaries). Wild Pokemon are technically feral, and any given Pokemon will quickly adapt to living with humans if caught.

Pokemon used to look different hundreds of years ago, and have slowly undergone Darwinian evolution over time as they were domesticated.

“Most trainers will legendaries shortly after their journey starts” statistic false. Most trainers will see no legendaries in their lifetimes. Ash Ketchum, who’s seen every single legendary in existence, is an outlier and should not be counted

However, areas where legendaries are known to live are oftentimes marked as no-catch conservation areas. People will oftentime travel to these parks to admire “common” legendaries (such as the bird trio) in their natural habitats.

Battles

Not knocking out a Pokemon you’re trying to capture is more of a honored rule than a law. The reason it’s done is to give the Pokemon ample time to flee--otherwise, someone may one-shot a Pokemon that doesn’t want a trainer, resulting in the Pokemon being unfairly knocked out and the trainer wasting their time.

If you give the Pokemon time to flee and it chooses to stay and fight, it’s potentially interested in accepting you as a trainer and you just have to prove yourself. If it flees, you should leave it alone.

Pokemon used for battles are specifically trained to not cause permanent harm or injury to their opponents (ex: that fire blast isn’t as hot as it could be, so it’ll only cause minor burns instead of third-degree ones). While the attacks used might look violent and cause some pain, serious injuries are very rare.

Wild Pokemon are also pretty good at restraining themselves if they’re just battling for fun or to test a trainer. They will not, however, restrain themselves if they feel threatened or are hunting. Trainers are advised to use caution when fighting wild Pokemon and return their Pokemon to their balls if necessary.

Psychic-types (Mr. Mime especially) are used to create protective barriers around arenas/trainers to protect people from flying debris and stray attacks.

Refs always have a few Pokemon on hand that know moves like stun spore or sleep powder in order to stop any fights that get out of hand.

Pokeballs

While some trainers different Pokemon by using different types of Pokeballs, decorating them is also a popular way to do it. Some people draw symbols or initials on the buttons, some add stickers, some paint them, ect.

Stores also sell semi-transparent hard shells that snap over the balls. These come in different colors and designs, so you can have a Pokeball that has a galaxy design on top instead of plain red if you want.

Most trainers keep about 40 some Pokemon or less, which they rotate between their party, the PC, and daycares/Pokemon sitters to keep them enriched and active. Some people keep more, but they generally spend all of their time caring for them and therefore aren’t trainers.

The general rule of thumb is to not leave a Pokemon in the PC for more than two weeks. If you fail to take them out after a month, they will be automatically removed and released back into the wild.

Pokeballs create little miniature simulations of nature, making them feel bigger on the inside. Different types of pokeballs have different or more advanced simulations, which may increase how much a Pokemon likes being in it.

Pokeballs create an invisible “tag” for the Pokemon by altering their energy when they’re first caught. These tags affect nothing, but Pokeballs are programmed to automatically check for one before they’ll activate.

Many poachers and other illegal groups produce their own illegal Pokeballs that do not check for tags before capture.

If a Pokeball breaks, it automatically releases the Pokemon inside and removes their tag.

Tags fade after about a month to allow for other trainers to capture a Pokemon after it’s been permanently released. The tag is automatically refreshed every time a Pokemon is brought back into its ball.

The standard Pokeball pattern is based off of the patterns of the Foongus line. Pokemon are very attracted to their markings, so the balls are painted the same to make the Pokemon like them more.

Eggs

Rather than combining genetics, Pokemon reproduce by combining their energy together (this looks a bit like two Pokemon evolving at the same time). Because of this, they lack reproductive organs and chromosomes.

Gender is a loosely defined concept for them. Pokemon can change their sex upon evolution if they want to, and some will change their sex over time (ex: legendaries are usually genderless, but will gain a sex to breed and then lose it again afterward).

If a Pokemon doesn’t display sexual dimorphism, the only way to determine their sex is to have a Pokemon Center do a blood test.

Eggs aren’t laid, but created. The pregnant Pokemon fosters energy in their body. When ready they separate the extra energy from themselves (once again, looks a bit like evolution), which forms into the egg. This causes them no pain, and means they have short gestation periods.

This also means Pokemon never look pregnant. The only way to tell is by getting them tested or paying attention to changes in behavior. Many trainers end up with eggs out of nowhere because they had no idea one of their Pokemon was pregnant to begin with.

In the wild, some species of Pokemon will lay hundreds of eggs (such as fish and bug Pokemon) to ensure their survival. In captivity, Pokemon rarely create more than 1 or 2 eggs at a time, likely because they understand their young are safe with their trainers.

Pokemon develop more quickly in their eggs than IRL animals. They can technically hatch shortly after the egg is made, but they usually spend extra time inside maturing. By the time the egg hatches, the baby already has fur/feathers/whatever, and can walk and eat solid food. This helps ensure their survival against predators.

Young Pokemon are differentiated by being “mature” or “immature”; an immature Pokemon will still gradually grow and change appearance, while a mature one is fully grown until it evolves. A Pokemon cannot evolve until it’s considered mature (excluding mega evolution for single-stagers).

To use Vulpix as a canon example: a newly hatched immature Vulpix is about 8 in tall and has one white tail. A mature Vulpix is about 2 ft tall and has six red tails.

In the wild, Pokemon mostly breed amongst their own species. The exception are Pokemon with uneven gender ratios (so if a Pokemon is 7:1 male vs female, the males will actively breed with anything in their egg group). Inter-species breeding among captive Pokemon is much more common, and usually based on the Pokemon’s personal preferences.

Hybridization in Pokemon born from two different parents is very rare, but it does happen from time to time. It’s more common in Pokemon that look similar or are distantly related.

“Perfect” hybrids, Pokemon that have equal amounts of traits from both parents as well as typing and abilities, are more sought after than shinies. They usually can’t breed due to their mix of energies.

I have a request for Battinson! I loved his Bruce Wayne in the movie, so maybe we could have a "day in the life of Bruce Wayne when he's not living vicariously through his Batman alter ego"

So I thought of this as more of a thing I would do as a headcanon so I hope that's okay! Mentions of sex so minors dni!

Bruce Wayne and the Batman were one and the same. Or more like Bruce Wayne lived in Batman and was just there along for the ride. So getting him to actually live his life outside of that was extremely difficult. It took a while to get him into a more domestic and normal routine. But you thought it helped that he had to follow this routine with you, it helped to give him something to look foward to as Bruce.

You, by that point, basically lived with him at the Wayne Manor, you honestly slept in your own bed maybe twice a week, when his bat activites where more of a priority and he would encourage you to go out and do your own thing.

So 8 times out of 10, you spent the night with Bruce at the manor.

The mornings were probably the hardest part.

Bruce never slept, or if he did it was only a mere few hours before he was inevitably woken up by nightmares and would simply resort to secluding himself to his batcave. That changed when you started to sleep with him.

When you were in his arms, he was knocked out cold, and waking him up was a struggle.

Sometimes you would both wake up to the sound of Alfred knocking and immediately inviting himself in. He would draw back the curtain so the sunlight would shine in the room, officially waking you both. You were receptive and usually accepted it was time to wake up. Bruce on the other hand, not so much.

"Five more minutes Alfred. I barely slept.."

He would say this still holding you tightly as you were his personal body pillow. Not that you minded. You found it pretty cute to be honest.

Alfred's response was usually something along the lines of "you have such and such meeting" or "it is late enough", there was even one time he told Bruce to quit his sobbing. You laughed for 5 minutes straight. And bruce definitely got up after that, very grumpily so.

And in the instances where you woke up before Alfred came to wake you both, Bruce would make very good use of his time.

Morning sex was everything to him.

He would start giving you neck kisses, mumbling about how you still had time or you just could stay in bed all morning. He could be very convincing at times.

"Come on my love, we can stay in bed a little longer. That way I can make love to you all morning."

Breakfast was always a must after.

You taught him that he had to eat full meals at least twice a day, and you would eat with him whenever you got the chance. Breakfast was usually your time for that.

The man clearly couldn't fry an egg, so obviously breakfast was made to you both. Which you always such a foreign concept to because as a grown adult you werent used to things being done for you. But you didnt mind.

After that it was showering time. And of course, he loved that too.

He was particularly fond of taking long warm baths with you. Not necessarily to fuck, but just to sit there, with you in his arms and for once allow his racing mind to relax for a little while. And he loved the intimacy that came with that.

But yes he absolutely loved fucking you in his bathtub. It was a bonus.

You usually parted ways after that. He would have to leave to take care of rich man business shit you didnt care about, and really, neither did he. And you would go to work.

Bruce would usually take the time to text you periodically throughout your day. Things like 'hope you're having a good day' 'I love you' 'cant wait to see you' and dumb shit like that.

Most nights, bruce would send somebody to pick you up. As much as you hated it, he insisted gotham was always safe and if he couldn't be there to protect you he would make sure you got home (or to his) safely.

Things like that always reminded you how rich he was, that he had a designated driver for you, on demand, whenever.

Another thing that reminded you of it was the unlike of present that man would get you. Usually every day after work, you would come to the manor only to find some form of a gift waiting for you since most days Bruce wasnt home to greet you.

You would either wait for him, or if you knew he was in the batcave you would come find him.

Sometimes you talked about your day, or his, but usually all you wanted to do was sit in silence with him, to relax, to be peaceful, and you would do this for hours in between occasional chats.

Some nights he would set his bat duties aside and would have a nice dinner with you at home. Which usually ended in activities that should not done on the same place he ate his food, but whatever.

You didnt usually go out, with him being almost like a celebrity, he hated the attention, so he would rather to things that were lowkey. And when you did go out, he would make sure it was as private as possible. If he had to rent out the whole place for the night he absolutely would.

When this wasn't the case, however, and he would go his nightly beating people up activites, you would usually entertain yourself with anything before going to sleep. You didnt wait up for him as much anymore. You knew he would come home eventually.

It was usually way into the night, 4, 5 or maybe even 6 am was when he would come home. You would hear him discard of his heavy armor, right there on the floor. You knew about his secret by now, so he didnt have to go through the extra effort of going to the batcave, take off his gear, black makeup and get dress before going to bed. He would skip all 3 and would straight to bed.

Some nights you would wake up to talk to him, if he even wanted to, most nights he didn't want to talk and you understood that, so you would just invite him to bed and would offer to take off his makeup for him.

He would grumble some excuses but would eventually accept. He would lay on his back, shirtless, black hair usually damp from sweat/rain and his pale face covered in small cuts, bruises, and smudges of black makeup.

You would silently take the black residue off from under his eyes and cheeks. You would take your time, would be gentle and caring with your touch. And after you had taken off the reminder black eyeliner, you would apply other things to his face. His skin was flawless, someone had to take care of it. Sometimes moisturizer and serums would do the trick, since he wouldn't allow you to do anything else. But some nights, if things had gone his way, he would let you exfoliate and do facemasks. He would even let you take care of his wounds if he had gotten any that night. That was usually the highlight of your day. You definitely loved how grumpy he got.

He always complained he didnt like it, but he actually loved it, he loved how you woukd actually take care of him and care for him like that. He always felt so peaceful and safe he would often fall asleep in the middle of it. And he couldn't blame exhaustion or sleep deprivation for that anymore.

Sleepy spooning sex was almost always a thing.

If he was dying from exhaustion or in excruciating pain.

And some bedtime cuddles after you bad boty cleaned yourselves up were always a must. He couldn't sleep if he wasnt holding you in his arms.

"I love you darling"

That was usually all you heard before falling asleep.

And that routine would often repeat over and over.

Ooh ooh ooh, how about your version of Sonic for the powers thing?

You see, Sonic is fast, because if he doesn't keep ahead of his problems, he'll have to actually think about them, and then he'll have a crisis.

This is partially a fun opener joke and it's also not. I'll let you decide how much of each it is. In the meantime, I'm going to talk about what my reads of various canons inspire in me, and how that informs Worlds AU, a bit more than talking about Worlds AU itself.

So Sonic in the initial game canon, started out with an extremely simple conceit. You can see this mirrored across all of the non-Amy classic characters: Sonic runs, that's his thing; Tails flies, Knuckles punches, Eggman makes robots and also problems, which sort of condenses into one thing considering the role robots have in the classic games.

(that damn caterkiller has cost me SO many attempts at a chaos emerald...)

This sort of got to be a problem as the games advanced. In particular, the Sonic game I started on was Sonic Adventure 2, which pitted Sonic very prominently off of Shadow. At this point, character concepts are no longer about simple capabilities, and every other member of the cast has grown up. (even Amy... though not too much. sorry Amy). Tails is now building robots to go with how his flight allows him to reach unconventional 'tricky' routes; Knuckles is now more of an adventurer, explorer, and even a mystic given his history and relationship with the emeralds. This earthly pugilist sense grounds him in a more versatile skill-set.

Sonic... basically his gimmick was remaining true to the classic formula- he was still the one going fast, popping those shuttle loops, and tumbling through a chaotic universe. Yes, they absolutely polished this and put flourishes on it- now he's grinding rails and flipping on poles, this sense of street-smart parkour that carries him cheekily through any environment...

But he's played off Shadow, where the thing about Shadow, especially in the first game, is Shadow is a person who suppresses most of his personality for his context. Not in an inorganic or badly written sense, mind- but he outright says to Rouge at one point that it doesn't matter if anything he remembers is fake- in essence, that it's more real than he is, and a dead person's wish is more important than his life.

Shadow is a soldier, is an alien, is a bioweapon, is a teleporter and he shoots lasers. We are beyond the days of simple conceits; if he was conceived in the classic era, he'd have probably been either only a jet-skater or a teleporter, and that one conceit about how he moved through the world would've been through everything.

Sonic picks up the chaos control from Shadow- in direct reaction to Shadow- and this is commented on. In this scene, Sonic not only rejects Shadow's unhealthy obsession with context- that where he came from was everything- but mirrors it with an attitude that, frankly, to me, rings just as unbalanced- Sonic basically denies having a backstory whatsoever.

"What you see is what you get!" he says.

And that flew in the classic era. We didn't really have a consistent or strongly-drawn backstory over why Sonic was fast. Most continuities around that era point it to either an accident or a happenstance synergy with an outside force. But we didn't really need a story over why Tails can fly or why Knuckles had spurs on his fists.

But in the modern era... there's context. Many characters have superpowers. And more and more, there was a sense that those superpowers had context and history, whether the outright spelled, like Shadow (he was engineered to be capable of this; if you look at him, he has most of the abilities you'd expect of a boss fight in Resident Evil, minus the squelchy, infectious sorts and the Black Arms imply he could well have those and just not use them)

...or the simply alluded, such as Blaze's ominous comment that her flames are the reason she was always alone.

Sonic... clearly has powers. He's been reframed to keep up with he setting as it changes. But that exchange between him and Shadow- where Shadow looks at what Sonic is capable of, looks at him, and asks, verbatim, "what are you," and Sonic delivers a non-answer so naked and so certain that there's not really anything to say to that.

To this end, while I think it's highly intuitive that they picked the wind as the motif to spice Sonic up to- with its sense of freedom, and with its association with speed- I think there's also something about air in general that connects to Sonic.

Air is... omnipresent. It has an extremely complex seething system high overhead. Enormous paths and belts and spirals of wind curl over us all the time, pushing clouds the size of entire states around like it's nothing. When you look at the sky, it looks stationary. But wait, squint- it's actually moving. It's actually moving really fast.

One of my absolute favorite characterizing moments of Sonic is in Archie Comics, specifically the post-reboot series. To keep context minimal, Tails confides in Sonic that he's losing his memory of a certain incident that affected both of them, and he's worried; Sonic reassures him, typical hero big brother best friend, and gives him a big hug. The scene is warmly lit.

The very next panel is literally in the shadows, over Tails' shoulder and behind his back. And Sonic's expression is... troubled. Telling. We immediately understand from that alone he just lied, and has no ability to 'just remember for Tails'.

Sonic is not a vacuous person. He's not empty, he's not innocent, and he's certainly not just your same good nostalgic friend who never changed or got complicated so you don't have to reevaluate all of those things- the guy you can always count on, just like the sky is always there- but he sure pretends to be all of those things, and tries to keep the stormy weather as far away from other people as possible.

This is given another heroic-sounding-but-actually-concerning context in Sonic Unleashed, one of several games in which Sonic shows a maybe suspicious but profound aptitude for darkness where he guzzles and serves as a very powerful conduit for the energy of Dark Gaia, who is strongly connoted with rage, despair, denial, and other states considered bad for your health.

Sonic asks Chip- who he's just found out is Dark Gaia's counterpart- if it was his protection that kept him from losing his mind the entire time. Chip denies this, and states instead it's that "you never let the darkness win."

The thing is... anger and sadness are actually pretty important to feel. And it's actually not true that Sonic as a character doesn't feel anger- there's a few rather notable scenes in which he really loses his cool, some of them within Sonic Unleashed itself (he actually scares Eggman at the culmination of the Egg Dragoon fight) and in the game Sonic and the Secret Rings he actually achieves a super form powered by negative emotions- and that game also ends on a surprisingly melancholy note, where Shahra, when leaving Sonic, specifically gives him a bunch of tissues, a nod to how they met, and specifically "So you can cry as much as you need to."

Sonic is a good person. But Sonic is also... kind of a liar. He has this powerful connection to these highly destructive and dangerous entities- Dark Gaia, Chaos- and this is a thing he, pointedly, doesn't wonder about. And it's not arrogance, or an inability to consider the possibilities- in Sonic Colors he is very real with himself that he can't outrun a black hole, but only admits that once Tails is out of earshot on the one safe ride away from it- and while gearing up to try to do so anyway.

Wind is a contradictory thing. In the sky, we consider the possibility of ultimate freedom; flight and wings are often depicted as symbols of enormous power and efficacy because the very notion of being able to go wherever you want to captivates us.

On the other hand, though, a state of freefall is terrifying. In the unparalleled freedom of the sky, absolutely nothing can catch you if you fall.

(you know, except Tails, if you're fighting Eggman in Marble Garden- I'll leave)

We can talk about a bolt from the blue, a sudden storm or a just-as-sudden clear blue sky... the mechanisms of the air around us are often very hard to perceive for their superficial simplicity. And on sunny days when the wind lazes slowly through the leaves, it's hard to think of it as capable of hurricane forces.

I guess the note I want to leave this on is, it's pretty interesting how Sonic genuinely likes running, but he also tends to either outrun or fight anything that stresses him out- and "what he is" and "what he's capable of" is something he really doesn't like talking about even if he's happy to show or compete it.
