Asian dramas and my favorite types of characters
There are my favorite types of characters as a list. A villain with a fatal weakness
Tumblr media
Drama: The Scholar Who Walks the Night /밤을 걷는 선비 Character: Gwi Screentime: Secondary Gwi is an ancient vampire and a master of puppets (and Joseon's king is the main of them). He is merciless, invincible and scheming all the drama long, until he accidentally kills a girl, who was his hostage and recalcitrant puppet from her childhood on and was the only one who could scold him and deny him. Nothing about it is said directly in the drama, but after her death he goes insane, kills all of his puppets and this way causes his own death. So, I suppose, she was his only weakness, and I like this type of a personal drama for a villain. Punch-Clock Villain / the Dragon
Tumblr media
Drama: 100 Days My Prince /백일의 낭군님 Character: Moo-yeon Screentime: Secondary Moo-yeon works as an assassin for the killer of his father, who is constantly threatening him with the life of his sister. Moo-yeon is a man of a very ill fate: his family was accused of a treason and executed, his sister became a fugitive, he was forced to sell his conscience for his and sister's lives and, as a cherry on the top of this cake, fell in love with the daughter of his captor. And died trying to save her... His story is sooooo sad, but it makes me feel for this character fully. Also, he is the king of whump because the half of the drama he is injured and suffers from his wounds. The whole sad story of this guy is analyzed by me here, here and here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: The King Loves /왕은 사랑한다 Character: Moo-suk Screentime: Minor Koreans, obviously, like this type of characters, too, so there is another Dragon of the main villain, Moo-suk. In his free from dirty deeds time he h̶e̶l̶p̶s̶ ̶o̶l̶d̶ ̶l̶a̶d̶i̶e̶s̶ ̶c̶r̶o̶s̶s̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶r̶o̶a̶d̶ literally saves cute children and restores self-confidence of young ladies. And then he falls in love, rethinks his life and dies from the hand of his master. Predictable and sad. Still a memorable guy, though. 50 shades of a Byronic Hero
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: The Wolf / 狼殿下 Character: Chu Youwen Screentime: Main A Mowgli boy was adopted by a wicked emperor, brought up like a cruel beast and was forced to do some dirty stuff for the emperor. He is mysterious, severe and you never know what's on his mind. As a true Byronic hero. He is some kind of Dragon, too, but it's a Chinese drama and he is a main hero in it, that's why he doesn't really do anything bad during the series. His soul is kind and his heart is pure, but he hides it from his love and deals with all of his problems on his own. It's the reason why all of this drama is a masochistic tango between him and his love. Whump lovers will be happy, too, because he is constantly in chains, pierced by arrows like a hedgehog or works as a slave in mines. As any other Dragon, he has a BE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: Lost You Forever /长相思 第一季 Character: Xiang Liu Screentime: Secondary A mysterious demon general, whose name makes everyone shake in fear. A former demon slave, who is true to his word enough to fight for his benefactor even if he knows crystal clearly that it's hopeless and he and his army will die in the end. A man who has huge problems with expression of his emotions in a socially approved way. Edward Cullen of Chinese dramaland. He is enigmatic, with thick vibes of a bad guy, yet very loyal to his benefactor as well as his love and very selfless. Because of this loyalty he will die and the love of his life will never-ever find out about anything he has done for her during the story.
Tumblr media
Drama: My Journey to You /云之羽 Character: Gong Shangjue Screentime: Secondary A guy was through trauma in his childhood and it made him look intimidating and unfeeling. A tsundere is born! He coped with his trauma by taking extra responsibilities for everything and everyone and turned to be a walking killing machine instead of a man. But an enemy assassin comes to his life and teaches him how to be a human once more. It's a painful experience, but it`s necessary in order to grow up as a character and is beautifully fulfilled. It was a great joy to know that he survives at the end of the story, it's a rare thing for this type of characters, so even if there is season 2 someday, I will not watch it in order not to spoil my impression of the first one. I wrote about him detailed here, here, here and here.
Tumblr media
Drama: Princess Agents / 特工皇妃楚乔传 Character: Yan Xun Screentime: Secondary It's the transformation story, too, like a previous one, but this time it's transformation from an ordinary man to a villain. Prince Yan Xun is a hostage colony prince in a metropolis empire, but he enjoys a noble life along with other nobility youth. The society around him is awful, each of these noble youths is a psycho who appreciate human hunt and so on, but cheerful and easy-going Yan Xun doesn't think their bloodthirstiness could turn against him. When relationship between the metropolis and the colony become tense, though, Yan Xun's friends of yesterday are happy to drink his blood. He loses his whole family and, insanely longing for revenge, slowly turns to one of those monsters himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: A Journey to Love / 一念关山 Character: Li Tongguang Screentime: Minor This guy has got a very realistic personality and background: he is a bastard who was deprived of mother's love since he was a child. The first circumstance made him power-hungry, scheming and outwardly emotionless, the second one made him longing for mother's love on insanely level. So he is invincible outwardly, but turns into a teary mess when it's about his female tutor, who is a mother figure for him. The contrast between these two personalities is enormous and makes this character very alive and interesting. During the drama he will not cope with his Oedipus complex but circumstances will solve this problem for him.
A pure-hearted hero
Tumblr media
Drama: Creation of the Gods Ⅰ / 封神三部曲 Character: Ji Fa Screentime: Main It's maybe strange to find this type of characters in the list of my favorite types, but morality and selflessness of a character is very important for me, too. This story is some kind of King Arthur's legend, but in a Chinese way. The emperor is bewitched by a demon and is bringing the kingdom to it's downfall, the Gods are here to find the savior with the help of a magic scroll that can be opened only by a true king. Ji Fa, a hero of this story, doesn't care about scrolls, but his heart is loyal to his kingdom and to his family (in this very order). He genuinely wants to help his friend-prince to be a king his kingdom deserves and, despite awful things that were done to him and his family, doesn`t harden his soul and betray his ideals. And, I suppose, although he isn't aware of this, he IS the future King Arthur of China. Interesting character decisions
Tumblr media
Drama: The Legends/招摇 Characters: Jiang Wu Screentime: Minor This character is something like a rival of the male lead. He is a xinmo - an inner demon of some other character and represents the darkest features of a human's soul. He is a ruthless killer, a dark sorcerer without conscience, but what was very unique, being literary the worst part of a human personality, he values his assistants a lot and genuinely cares for them. A villain is usually a lone wolf. He doesn't trust anyone and doesn't value anyone, his loneliness is usually his weakness and a key to his downfall. So I was pleasantly surprised that sometimes a villain is capable of building healthy relationships with his subordinates.
Tumblr media
Drama: Sh**ting Stars / 별똥별 Characters: Do Soo-hyuk Screentime: Minor
This guy truly surprised me. Firstly, he is supposed to be something like a third wheel in relationships of the main couple, but he just calmly got a refusal from the female lead, said "OK" and, absolutely relaxed, proceeded to live his life further. It's something unbelievable for me, because I used to see the insanity caused by an unrequited love to be the plot engine of a lot of dramas. Secondly, he is well-written as a character, straightforward, principled and has tsundere-ish or Byronic vibes - all the character features that I like =) Part 3 will be about other interesting types of relationship, mostly between men.

Changeling Fantasy and Neurodiversity
Can we talk about the trope "Changeling Fantasy" in regard to neurodiversity? Yes I stumbled across this on tvtropes.com. Yes I finally found the name of the trope I related to too much as a kid. Yeah I've been putting this trope into my fanfic I have in my head without realizing why. And yes, I'm gonna rant about it. The changeling fantasy is basically the trope where a character finds out that their family is not their real family and that explains why they are different. It is an explanation for being outside the norm. The family group is the norm, and not being the same as everyone else means there is something wrong with the person/situation. But this trope gives a satisfying and logical explanation as to why you do not fit into this status of normal, because you were never supposed to. You are a different creature than your family, and that is ok. Great even in some cases. The story usually begins with the adoption. A stork making the wrong delivery, a tragedy befalling the original parents, or the classic baby in a basket down the river.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The family takes in the child and does their best to take care of them, despite their differences. Sometimes with the trope "interspecies adoption" the child will even get confused as to what they really are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although sometimes, the caretakers that either found them, or stole them away, are not as caring as they appear, and can even be the real danger...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But of course, because the child in question is different, there will always be a yearning to find out why. What can't they fit in? Is there another way of living that's more suited to them? Are there others like them out there?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suddenly, either someone tells them, "Suprise, you're adopted!"...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or the character finds another one of their kind (or akin to them)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This then takes the character on the journey of finding others of their kind, the "there is another" trope at times. And if/when they do find more, and if more of their kind is friendly/not wanting to kill all humans, then the feeling of belonging and understanding finally washes over them
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can say for some, that's the same feeling for neurodiverse folks. Family either, tries their best to raise you even when it can be a challenge from society, or takes advantage and abuses the child. You feel "off" from everyone else but can't tell why. You either discover or are told, "Hey guess what? You're (enter neurodiversity here) There is a great search for more knowledge about your condition and for others with it. And finally, the elation of finding a community of others like yourself. You are not alone there is whole community waiting for you. You are not a freak, what you do is normal and healthy. And despite what people have said in the past, you matter.
Tumblr media
That is the fantasy and wish fulfillment of this trope.

Female-Targeted Doujin Masterlist
Tumblr media
Thank you anon! Sooooo, I have decided to compile a female-targeted/yumejoshi masterlist, I'll add this post to my main masterlist soon.
These were the one I could think of from memory, I’ll come back to this list and add to it if I get more, I'm sure I missed a few from my bookmarks. Feel free to add to it in the comments, and I'll try to find and update it! Also, several of these were recommended from anons in the past, so thank you all <3
FYI several links lead to nh*ntai dot net, so be aware of that.
Tumblr media
Umekoppe
As per the post anon is referencing, Umekoppe is a doujin group that consistently puts out exclusively good content!
“The Yandere Prince Won't Let Me Slip Away”
(Part One)
(Part Two)
Premise: Isekai/pseudo-reincarnation trope, premise basically explained by the title, MC is isekai'd as prince's lost lover.
"The Sacrificial Maiden Corrupted by Coupling With an Oni"
(Link)
Premise: Historical Japan setting, the "MC is an offering sacrifice to the Creature, but the Creature chooses to keep her instead" trope.
"Until the Trashiest Boy Toy Exorcist Ren-kun Crushes Me in His Embrace"
(Part One)
(Part Two)
Premise: MC is a girl that attracts malevolent spirits, exorcist-kun is obligated to help her ward them off (with orgasms, naturally).
"The Spy Who Ravished Me ~Reborn As a Mafia Princess in a Deadly Game~"
(Link)
Premise: Isekai, MC reincarnated into a game where she knows who the guy who is most likely to kill her is, but in her attempt to avoid getting killed by him, ends up taking actions that make him grow into an obsessive love-hate instead. Top tier, this boy is probably the worst (in a good way) of how all the Umekoppe love interests treat the girl.
"Heibon Onna wa Downer Kami-sama ni Izon sarete Modorenai" (this one didn't have a translated title, sorry)
(Link)
Premise: MC discovers her friend is a shrine god and wolf-boy. Wolfboy fun times ensue (and in the end she's apparently unknowingly trapped into being with him forever, so that's nice).
You’re Cutest When You’re Pathetic ~Obsessed Golden Retriever Boy Haru’s Disciplinary Sex~
(Part One)
(Part Two)
Premise: Softboy™ neighbor finds MC's phone with lewd stuff on it, gets her confessions in drunk conversations, turns out to not be so much of a Softboy behind closed doors.
Oniben Katze
Another group that also does a lot of fem-targeted stuff.
Serious Sex with my Brutish Boyfriend
(Link)
Premise: MC's lover gets mad over rumors that she's a slut, decides to get possessive and rough over it.
Dog Eat Dog Era
(Part One)
(Part Two/Extras)
Premise: a personal favorite, an isekai'd witch adopts two dragon boys who grow up to have a strong fixation with her and noncon ensues.
Parasite Garden
Makes notably darker stuff that contains more controversial subject matter/themes, so be warned.
The Corpse of a Goldfish is at the Bottom of the Swamp
(Link)
CW: INCEST
Premise: possessive brother wants to corrupt/mindbreak sister to keep her forever (spoiler: he succeeds)
The Neighbor in Room 203 Disappeared Leaving their Keys Behind
(Link)
Premise: stalker girl meets her match, as it turns out the boy neighbor she's stalking pulls a spiderman pointing meme and has actually been her stalker for even longer and to a much greater, darker, and more more extreme extent, and is intent on not letting her go.
My Sweet Bunny Cage
(Part One)
(Part Two)
Premise: tiny girl is kidnapped by a crazed guy convinced she is the reincarnation of his lost pet rabbit.
Other
(artist listed below titles)
If you wish, hypnosis ~Maki-san's secret love therapy~
(Link)
Artist: Meeo
Premise: pretty straightforward, after she doesn't believe it's real, MC's coworker uses hypnosis on her for Certain Specific Purposes.
Sakaki the Lazybones Shows His Talents at Night
(Link) (Contains all chapters' links on the page, you might have to scroll down on the chapter list to see chapter one on some phones)
Artist: Potsunen Jin
Premise: (Another personal favorite) MC's younger coworker, peak innocent idolizing softboy, is in love with her and takes advantage of a situation while she's drunk after watching porn to "learn what girls like." Clingy, possessive relationship ensues.
Lady K and the Sick Man
(Chapter One) (site's menu is a bit awkward to deal with, but you have to click in the corner to view the menu to go to other chapters).
Artist: Rororogi Mogera
Yet another personal favorite, this one does have slight male gaze to it in that it focuses on the girl quite a bit, but it still focuses on the guy way more than the average doujin. Also the guy is an older bigger guy, if you ever tire of the twink/twunk standard in yumejoshi stuff.
Premise: guy moves into an apartment with a ghost lady and just kinda accepts it because he can't afford to live anywhere else, but quickly decides he’s down bad for ghussy.
I Became the True Love Object of Mr. Segawa, Who Has a Huge Attitude and Body
(Link)
Artist: Haruo Haruyama
Premise: very straightforward office coworkers to lovers, coworker is a big guy who turns out to be kinda sadistic, which is good for the masochistic MC.
The Man Who Saved Me on my Isekai Trip was a Killer
(Part One)
(Part Two)
(Part Three)
Artist: Ahan Horihori
Premise: this one got kind of infamous and shock-valued the mainstream crowd due to an animated advertisement I believe, it's essentially self-explanatory from the title: isekai'd lady gets saved by a guy who turns out to be a violent murderer, dark and sometimes pseudo-incesty plot twists ensue.

I was thinking of Beren and Lúthien and how their story is so much more interesting than they get credit for. I mean, on the surface it reads like a fairy tale but it also elevates the rest of the story, it uses common fairy tale tropes but turns them upside down, and the way we see the heroine asserting her agency in this story is so fascinating. I think the story of Beren and Lúthien provides much needed contrast for the rest of the Silm, and both become more poignant because of this contrast.
The familiar fairy tale goes like this: there's a a poor but resourceful peasant, set with a difficult task (which is in fact designed to be impossible to complete), but thanks to some magical help he is successful, retrieves treasure, and as a reward he wins the king's daughter and lives happily ever after as a prince, gaining all the earthly glory one can have in this life. But in the Tale of Beren and Lúthien, the hero is a traumatised outlaw, the king's daughter IS the magical help, she is an active and equal participant in the quest for her own hand in marriage, the treasure may actually be cursed, the hero and heroine die, and the ultimate reward is not a social rise from rags to riches. Beren does not become a member of the power-wielding elite of Doriath and he and Lúthien are not promised that their second life will be happy or long. But just that chance is worth it, and by choosing it they actually change the course of history. Lúthien is offered all the bliss that is possible to have in Arda, if she will give up Beren, but she decides that the love she has for him is still more valuable. And that idea, of loving someone so much that your love shifts the world, is so compelling to me.
And I love that the story of Beren and Lúthien is also a rendition of Orpheus and Eurydice, and that just as the world was created in the Music of the Ainur, so is Lúthien's song powerful enough to change what those original notes dictated. She changes it with hope and a song. That is so simple and yet so beautiful, in the way some of the best myths are. (Insane that this is essentially a love-letter to Edith Tolkien.)
There is this fascinating contrast between Beren and Lúthien: at the time of their first meeting, Beren has lost literally everything and his family is either dead or lost beyond retrieval. Stumbling across Lúthien, he is fresh from terrible ordeals and suffering. But Lúthien's life has been full of happiness and without care, and she has lived in a literal fairy kingdom as the most beautiful of all the Children of Ilúvatar. She could have her pick of any prince of Eldar. But here she comes across this mortal, who has nothing to give except for his love and even that only for a brief time, and she is willing to risk all she has for it. The gall and courage it takes to take such a chance! She chooses this man and her choice changes everything.
And that is brilliant! Because Lúthien starts with so little power and agency, and she is constantly belittled or even abused by those with more power around her. She is treated as a pawn, her will is undermined and she is coerced and imprisoned to make her compliant. But Lúthien shows her determination and courage in holding fast to her choice even when it's just her and Beren against the world. In the end, she wins agency and freedom to determine her own tale. In her beginning Lúthien is a maid dancing in the woods; by the end she will have faced Satan and death itself, and changed the world forever. Truly, to call her story "Release from Bondage" is more than appropriate. How insane is this all from Beren's point of view? He has lost everything, he is an outlaw, and has nowhere to go. What is left of his family is scattered who knows where. He has nothing but the clothes on his back and nothing to give. But here is this immortal princess, and she will go to hell and back with him! She will cross the Sundering Sea to bid him farewell! She pleads with inexorable death and for her, an exception is made!  It's so on brand for Tolkien that these two achieve with their love, and precisely because they act out of love, something that others with armies behind their backs can't even imagine doing.
Yeah. It's such a good, hopeful, bittersweet tale.

seventeen members as love tropes: seungcheol
forbidden romance
'in another life, i'd made you stay'
it's risky. it's risky, and stupid, and he can't even begin to list all kind of disastrous things that'll happen if someone catches him right now and yet. seungcheol is still here, rushing quietly, moving as a shadow throgh the rose garden, getting closer and closer to your chambers with each step. seungcheol is a rational man, an intelligent prince, a pride of the nation - how did you turn him into someone so foolish?
seungcheol lived his whole life putting his family and his duty to the kingdom first, cared only about becoming a graceful king who'll take good care of his people. seungcheol cared about politics, about this year's harvest, about wellbeing of his people - he never cared about... romance. he lived with knowing that he'll marry someone whose background will strengthen position of his home and that was fine by him. that was more than fine by him, something he never thought about until you happened.
'my prince, is that you?'
barely there whisper makes him straighten up. seungcheol carefully dislodges himself from where he was hiding behind tall oak tree and takes quiet steps in your direction until his frame isn't illuminated by moonlight. you are there, so close and so far at the same time: he can see the color of your eyes but he cannot feel your breath on his cheek. seungcheol prides himself in being strong-willed at the face of temptations, but how can he resist you? everything in him calls to you, wants to step closer, wants to hold you in his arms and be the one to steal the first kiss from your lips. seungcheol prides himself in being strong-willed, but he's crumbling at the face of your smile.
'you came,' you sound awed like you can't believe it to be true. small step forward from your side and then immediate step back, filled with hesitation and embarrassment. 'i did not dare to bring my hopes up.'
'i promised,' seungcheol's knuckles are turning white from how hard he's clenching his fists. god, if only he could step closer, if only you weren't already promised, if only - 'and i always keep my promises.'
smile on your face is bittersweet and it doesn't suit you at all; you should be smiling all happy and sweet, like the very first time he saw you. your eyes should never look so sad, they should be shining with joy and love, like they do all the time when both of you meet on royal events. seungcheol wished he wasn't the only son. seungcheol wished his father thought of your family as a match for him. he wished he met you earlier, so you two'd have more time. he wished he didn't come here to confess his love to someone he has no chance with, to someone who's going to marry another man tomorrow.
'you always keep your promises...' you echo, lost in the thought. 'i wish i was promised to you.'
these words slash seungcheol's heart in two, leave him bleeding and wounded. his mouth opens and closes, stubborn tears well up in his eyes. 'i wish you were,' he agrees, looking up at you. at his answer you raise your head and meet his gaze, prince hopes you can feel all his feelings for you. 'i rarely wish for anything, but i'd beg on my knees on the altar of the Highness, i'd let our enemies run me over, all to be able to have your heart, princess.'
he doesn't dare to call you 'my princess', because you are not his and even when you call him 'my prince', he can't do the same. someone has to stay rational, someone has to not fall -
'no need for all of that, my prince. you already have it. my heart is yours and what happens tomorrow will not change it.'
seungcheol has no chances. he fell for you, for your honesty and openness and he can't keep his composure when you bare yourself in such way. 'my heart is yours, my princess. and what happens tomorrow will not change it either.'
four steps. he can take those four steps and wipe those tears from your cheeks - but he doesn't. he doesn't and his soul dies somewhere with your hope, when you take a step back and hastily wipe away your tears. he knows you waited, hoped for him to be the one to make first move, but seungcheol can't. his people, his loyalty, his kingdom - he can't.
'be gone, choi seungcheol, prince of the west kingdom. i wish you well.'
your tone is clipped, cold, void of any affection and warmth. i deserve it, seungcheol thinks, keeping his face composed. i know i deserve it, but it hurts too much. he doesn't trust his voice not to break, so seungcheol only bows lowly and doesn't look at you, even when he hears you sniffling. keeping his head low, seungcheol turns away and goes back, leaving tiny pieces of his heart on the way. maybe, he thinks, looking up at the full moon, maybe in another lifetime we could be lovers.
a/n: second one in 'love trope' series, what do we think? come to my inbox please :') - nini

The Hero with Dead Parents is not Cliché, it’s Necessary
The staggering number of protagonists in sci-fi and fantasy with dead parents grows every single year. Frodo Baggins, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker (before the retcon in ESB), almost every Disney Prince and Princess, the Baudelaire children. Beyond the realm of fantasy into action, thriller, romance, mystery, slice-of-life, and bildungsromans.
Dead parents, or parent, is the curse of being the hero of the story and for a very good reason:
Parents are inconvenient as f*ck.
Unless the mom and/or dad is the villain of the story or the entire story is about the relationship with the parent/parents, the “dead parent” trope serves many purposes and while it may be “cliché” that doesn’t mean this trope is bad or, in my opinion, overused.
It’s one less liability the hero has to worry about protecting
It’s one less obstacle in the hero’s path to their adventure
It’s one (or two) less characters to find excuses to stay relevant in the story
It’s a juicy backstory a lot of people can relate to
Trauma. Is. Compelling.
It’s an excellent motivation
And their murder is an excellent inciting incident
Living parents and guardians get killed off both for internal plot reasons, and meta writing reasons: Living parents are a pain in the ass to keep up with. You’re stuck with a character your hero should still keep caring about, keep thinking about, keep acting in relation to how their actions will be seen and judged by that parent. That parent becomes an obvious liability by any villain who notices or cares.
Living parents can of course be done well, unless they’re the villain, but they just kind of sit there on the fringes of the plot, waiting around to be relevant again and they kind of come in four flavors:
There when the plot demands for pie and forehead kisses (Sally from Percy Jackson)
A suffocating but well-meaning obstacle in between the character and their independence trying to do right (Abby from The 100, Katniss’ mom from Hunger Games, Spirit from Soul Eater)
A mentor figure (Valka from HTTYD 2, Hakoda from ATLA)
The only rock this character has left (Ping from Kung Fu Panda)
*Notice how many of my examples lost their partners shortly before or during the plot, thus still giving the hero the “dead parent” label.
Most of these are self-explanatory so I’ll say this:  I think this trope gets exhausting when the parents are written out without enough emotional impact on the hero. These are their parents and a lot of the time, the emotional toll of losing them isn’t there, like just slapping a “dead parents” sticker is all you need to justify a character’s tragic backstory and any behavioral issues they might have.
Like, yes, the hero has dead parents, but you still have to tell me what that means to them beyond obligate angst and sadness. When the “dead parents” trope reads as very by-the-numbers, usually the rest of the story is, too.
How present the parents were in the character’s life should be proportional to the death’s impact on the narrative (as with any character you kill off). If they were virtually nonexistent? No need to waste a ton of time. If they didn’t matter to the character before, they don’t need to matter now unless the plot revolves around some knowledge or secret their parent never shared.
Sometimes, the hero’s dead parents are a non issue. Frodo being raised by Bilbo doesn’t impact his character at all. It’s a detail given and tossed away. On the other hand, sometimes the entire centerpiece of the work is revenge/justice/catharsis surrounding the parent’s death—Edward and Alphonse Elric’s entire story is defined by the consequences of trying to bring their mother back from the dead.
As someone who kept one of my protagonist’s parents alive and didn’t make them villains just to spite the trope, I have all the more respect for this enduring legacy of fiction. You can of course keep the parents alive, but I don't think it's seen as lazy or cheating or taking a shortcut just killing them off, so long as you remember that your hero is human and should react to losing them like a real person.

⋆𐙚₊˚⊹♡ 3.6k words, 20.4k characters
There were whispers in the Geto castle.
The news of Prince Suguru's betrothal, whispered in the hallowed halls of the castle, reaching everyone's ears like a chilling wind. Geto was used to the stares and hushed whispers, due to being the prince of the most successful kingdom in the land...but this was different.
He stood silently looking down at his kingdom, the vast sky, resembling an infinite canvas, adorned with shades of blue, purple, and gold, filtered through the window which cast a golden shadow over his features.
It was as if the gods smiled down on the land, offering love and tenderness throughout the whole kingdom which was preparing for a celebration. As the sun tickled his skin a conflicted look cast over his features, and his eyes, usually sharp and calculating, flitted around as he looked down at his people. His fingers traced the intricate patterns on the parchment, reading it over and over in hopes it would finally sink in.
Ever since the elders announced he was to be betrothed they seemed more over joyed than he was, finally finding a wife for him to wed and strengthen the kingdom. He had initially dismissed it as insignificant, firmly believing he would discover a solution, a way out, but now he found himself here. On the day he was to be married.
The kingdom was adorned in colorful decorations from head to toe, and Suguru almost felt guilty but he saw all the effort being put in for his wedding were not in vain. Every decoration was clearly placed with care; to celebrate the union of their prince and this mystery woman. Nevertheless, even with the stunning scenery around him, he couldn't shake the desire for it all to be over.
"Yo! Suguru!" A large hand clasped on his shoulder which pulled him out of his thoughts as Satoru's blindfold and snow white hair came into view. The tall man had a nervous grin and his face and he reached up to scratch the back of his head suspiciously, as Suguru looked up at him incredulously.
"Ah, Satoru. What's wrong?" Something was clearly going on, as Gojo wore his emotions on his sleeve. Before he could even get a chance to answer, all of the worst case scenarios were running through Suguru's head. He already felt a headache incoming.
"Oh, it's nothing...just your future wifey!" Suguru's eyebrows furrowed at his words as Satoru cringed slightly, knowing that wasn't even the whole of the news. After a awkward pause Suguru patiently asked, "Yes?" urging Satoru to continue while trying to contain his frustration.
Satoru let out a laugh and threw his arm over Suguru as the later let out a sigh and pushed him off. "Oh trust me, you're gonna laugh! We're all gonna look back on this an-" "Spill it, Satoru."
The white haired male tensed up as a bead of sweat formed on his brow. "...I may have...lost...her?"
Another awkward silence filled the room as the handsome prince's features contorted into one of disbelief. How do you lose a grown adult? This was new low for Satoru.
His first instinct was to look for her. After all, Satoru wasn't the most thorough when it came to these things. Perhaps she left her room only for a moment to speak to a maid, or maybe she wasn't spotted in her room...right? As much as he tried to distract himself his mind wandered to a worse outcome. Abduction or an assassination attempt. But what if she was just like him? Hesitant and perhaps she got cold feet? If she had spoken to the elders like they had him, there's no doubt they intimidated her.
The raven haired prince let out a sigh and ran a hand over his face as he began calculating all possible strategies to find her before the ceremony. He turned to Satoru who let out a sigh of relief at his words. "Alert our best trackers. We need to devise a plan to cover all the areas she might have gone."
Satoru nodded and both men began to stride out of the room. As he made his way into the long, winding hallways of his castle, the words of the elders rang in his mind.
You will learn to love her.

1 DAY PRIOR
You were certain your life was ending.
You sat on the edge of your bed as you dramatically leaned against the post of your bed, eyed wide and face blank despite the whirlwinds of emotions inside you. Dozens of servants scurried around your room, packing trunk after trunk for your move. To your new home.
You flopped back on the bed with a 'omph' as the mindless chatter of the maids sounded like static in your ears. The gauzy silks and beautiful furniture of your childhood room began to close in on you, the weight of tradition and duty bearing down on your fragile shoulders. The room, once a sanctuary of comfort, now felt like a confining fortress.
Your trembling fingers traced the intricate patterns of a silver necklace, a cherished token your mother gave to you as a child. The impending marriage felt like the beginning of the end of all of your freedom. You would hardly ever see your beautiful gardens, your castle, or your parents ever again.
Despite this, everyone except you seemed to be convinced this was the best thing that could've ever happened to you. You remembered the elders words as you rolled you eyes.
This is a great honor for your family. You were chosen, out of all the kingdoms, out of all the princesses in the land, to marry the eldest son of the Shibuya kingdom.
Just as you let out a defeated sigh, a gentle knock on the chamber door disrupted you thoughts, and your mother came into view and your heart sunk. As she approached your bed she ushered all the maids out of the room before striding over to you gracefully. You sat up and sent her a glare through the corner of your eye.
"[name]. What's troubling you my daughter?", she said gently as she sat beside you. You whipped your head around with bated breath. "Mother," You began hesitantly. After one word, it was as if all your confidence was knocked out of you and your gaze was now fixed on the intricate patterns of the carpet.
"I...I don't want to marry Suguru Geto. I fear what life awaits me if I am bound to him. Besides, what if I don't love him? What if we are not compatible like the elders say?"
Your mother sighed, her eyes filled with a sense of understanding. "My dear, the union with Suguru is not solely about personal desires and it has nothing to do with love. Think of the kingdom, and our people. Arranged marriages have been a longstanding tradition that have proven to be good for us. Just look at your father and I, who also had an arranged marriage and have found joy in each other's company."
You let out a small scoff and you turn your head away from your mother. She just didn't understand...None of them did. Sensing your frustration your mother smoothed out her skirts before standing with a small exhale. "You'll depart later tonight and arrive in the morning, just in time for the ceremony." You didn't respond and a pregnant pause fell over the room. Just as your mother was about to depart she looked back at you sadly as she held the door open. "Give Suguru a chance. You will learn to love him my dear." She said softly before closing the large door with a soft click.
Now you were truly all alone, in your large room with near maddening silence. "Give him a chance...yeah right." you muttered to yourself with a furrowed brow. You made your way to the balcony and gazed down upon your kingdom as your mind wandered to your unknown prince.
Was he kind? Handsome? Cruel? Stupid? Ugly?
A breeze swept through, lifting the tendrils your hair. With every passing moment, you fell deeper and deeper within your pit of despair. You couldn't resign to a life dictated by others.
It just wasn't you.
The union, this man, this wedding felt like a betrayal of your essence. As tears welled up in your eyes, your decision became clear. It was daunting, yes, but who would want to be bound to a destiny they didn't choose? As you picked up your gown with new determination, your mind was made.
You were going to flee the wedding.
✦•······················•✦•······················•✦✦•······················•✦•······················•✦
Suguru was just about fed up.
It had been nearly 3 hours since the word of his bride's escape and despite him and the guard's best efforts, she was still nowhere to be found. He huffed exasperatedly as he wiped the sweat off his brow
He could just imagine the disappointed faces of the elders, his parents the kindgom...He couldn't be that repulsive to be wed to. Could he? As the sun hung high above the velevety sky, Suguru sat on a nearby bench carved out of the finest marble.
The raven haired prince placed his head in his hands as the sun beat down on the back of his neck. This is what he wanted after all he supposed, to not be married. But as he sat surrounded by winding paths and blooming flora stretched before him he wondered what it would be like. Could he have learned to love this woman?
Just as he got up to leave, he saw a flash of white from behind the foliage. An eyebrow quirked up as he got up to investige and as he slowly walked forward to investigate a soft murmur of hushed grunts and rustles of leaves reached his ears.
There, beneath a canopy of wisteria, Suguru spotted a lone figure. A young woman who her back turned to him and an lavish dress draped over her figure. A large array of lace, floral details and extravagantly large petticoats made into an over the top gown.
One that only could have been reserved for a princess.
Curiosity piqued, Suguru approached quietly, the crunch of gravel beneath his shoes masked by the soft rustling leaves. As he drew closer, he noticed the princess immersed trying (and failing) to scale the wall despite your nearly comically large dress, unaware of his presence.
Clearing his throat, Suguru spoke, his voice a velvety whisper that mingled with the silence of the garden. "Excuse me, are you needing some assistance, princess?" You turned with a bewildered look on your face, and a small gasp was let out at the sight of the man before you. As she studied the stranger who had interrupted your escape, you smoothed your skirts and tried to play it off.
"Uhm- No? No. I'm quite fine sir. Thank you." You responded annoyedly as you hiked up your dress and squinted your eyes at the man. He was handsome- there was no doubt about that, but you certainly didn't plan on getting caught. Where did he come from and why did he bother you? He might have recognized you because of your fancy appearance, but who was he?
"You can go and wait with the rest of those..gawkers for the ceremony. I know the prince must've sent you, but trust me. I'm perfectly fine."
Suguru's lips began to curl into a soft, amused smile as he took a step closer to you as you took one back. "I never doubted you were alright. You look perfectly determined and capable. But, do indulge me. What are you doing?" He asks with an entertained smile as he gestures to the wall.
Your eyebrows raised slightly and you took a sharp breath inwards. "I just told you. I'm not doing anything." You said exasperatedly as your hands balled into fist. This man was really messing with your escape (not that you were making that much progress in the first place).
The man raised an eyebrow at your words and you looked around before sighing and throwing your head back. "Fine. If you must know, I'm trying to climb this wall. And I can see you clearly find my failure amusing so I hope you're satisfied."
A pregnant pause fell over the two of you, and you hoped in revealing your purpose, he’d then mind his business and go away. "Climb...whatever for?" he questioned, genuinely intrigued by your confession.
"I-I..." You were getting more and more frustrated by the minute, and now you feared you revealed too much. "I...I'm escaping. I've heard rumors...he's cruel, and a monster! I would rather be alone for the rest of my than spend it with a demon I know nothing about."
Suguru's eyebrows flew to his hairline in bewilderment at your words. You couldn't've been talking about him...could you? He cleared his throat, obviously bewildered before inquiring further: "I-I'm sorry, but who are you talking about, princess?"
"I suppose that was rude..." you mumbled to yourself, as Suguru still stood bewildered before you awaiting an answer. You looked up at him, sensing he was wanting an honest answer before sighing. "The Prince! Suguru Geto...I know nothing of him and yet everyone expects me to give my life away to him...they turned their backs on me and my future...so I'm doing the same."
Realization dawned upon him as he nodded, absorbing your words. As your words sunk in a wave of sympathy washed over him. You were not as different from him as he had thought. You had dreams, aspirations, and hopes for your future.
As he stood with his solace you hoisted your skirts and turned back to the wall, putting your mind back on your escape and formulating a plan. “You know, if I grab there… yes!” you looked back to him over your shoulder, “You could assist me by lifting me up, you know." You say breathlessly as you prepared to scale the wall again.
He stared puzzled as he contemplated your ask. "But, marrying a prince couldn't be that bad? Besides, not all rumors are true...what if he's handsome?"
You rolled your eyes. "He could be the most handsome man ever and I wouldn't care. Looks have nothing to do with it and neither does personality. I just...want my own life. Now, here- come on. If you grab me here and hoist me up I could make it over the rocks and reach a carriage."
He considered your words as he watched you struggle, pondering the consequences. "But what will you do when people realize you're missing? And what about the prince- I'm sure he cares about your wellbeing." He says with a small smile as his eyes soften.
“I seriously doubt that, and besides I can worry about all of that later. Now, if you please…” you turned your back to him, still determined to proceed with your mission. “I just need a little help. Come. Hurry up.”
He licked his lips, caught in his own contemplation, before taking two slow steps forward. “I have absolutely no intention of helping you,” he declared, surprising you with his refusal.
At your surprise, you lost your grip on the vine and fell to the ground with a small grunt at the man's feet. Once you were untangled from your mass of petticoats you glared up at him, nostrils flared as you sat breathing heavily, almost as if you were giving him a moment to correct his words.
You marched towards him with sure steps, closing the gap between your bodies. "I am not a mere woman, I am a princess! Who is in need of help and you refuse? I ask- no demand you assist me in getting over the wall." you confronted him, your voice tinged with disbelief.
The man let out a laugh as he closed his eyes and shook his head in disbelief, or was it amusement? And after a moment of silence he replied, his voice filled with a twinge of playfulness.
"I only refuse when that princess is trying to climb over the wall to escape an arranged marriage with me." He declared, his words lingering in the atmosphere, exposing a reality that took you by surprise.
Shock rippled though through you, and you put your gloved hands up to your mouth and gasped. It felt as if all of your air had been knocked out of you as your eyes locked onto his onyx ones. This couldn't have been true...All the things you heard from your handmaidens, and your friends back home didn't describe this man at all. Yet here he was in front of you, a picturesque version of a prince every woman could've wished for. He was beautiful, with his dark hair and smoldering eyes, but you had noticed this when you first laid eyes on him. Back then he was just a random man, but now it all felt surreal. You eyelashes fluttered and your breath hitched and he closed the gap to grab your hands tenderly and press a kiss to the back of your glove.
He wore a smirk on his lips, a glimmer of mischief dancing in his gaze. He knew this whole time. “Hello, [name],” He said with a beaming smile. "I'm Suguru, the demon."
You stared up at him horrified, as he let out a small chuckle seemingly finding this whole situation funny. Standing there, trapped between amazement and doubt, your tongue seemed to have lost its purpose. You let out a noise akin to a squeal in embarrassment as he continued to laugh as you bowed deeply before him, your head nearly touching the grass of the garden.
"I-I'm deeply sorry," you said shakily as you slowly raised your head towards him. "please forgive me."
He lent his hand out from the ground and you stared at it bewildered, even wondering if it would be wise to take it after how much you disrespected him. Not sensing you would take it, he bent down to grab your hand and hoisted your mass of lace and flowers from the ground as you wobbled uncertainly in front of him.
"My Prince" you stammered, attempting to bow once more but he intercepted your actions smoothly. His hands gently caught your arms and as you stood up straighter his hands slowly guided themselves to your own, as your fingers intertwined. he gently guided your hand downwards with elegance, uniting your hands. The touch of his hand on yours captured your attention, as the sound of your heartbeat echoed in your ears.
"No, no. Please, I'm just Suguru to you. Nothing more." he corrected you in a soft-spoken manner, withdrawing his hand as he placed it on his chest.
"Suguru, I'm so sorry..." you began, but the words dying on your tongue in shame. "Please, you have to understand if I had known it was you-"
He interrupted you, his gaze unwavering. “You would have what? Not told me that you were trying to escape?”
“Well, yes. I mean…” Your words stumbled over each other, attempting to form a coherent defense. He laughed again, a sound you could get used to, but now it filled you with embarrassment.
"I apologize my prince." You said lowering your gaze in shame with a soft voice.
"Suguru." he corrected you once again, a gentle reminder. “Just Suguru.”
You smiled softly as you looked away in embarrassment as the weight of everything that had happened and all unspoken emotions lingered in the air. As he put a gentle hand on your shoulder, he leaned in close and whispered in you ear, a solemn promise to just you and him.
"I know what people say, and I know you don't wish to be wed to me...but perhaps if you'll have me as your husband, we could ignore all that and I could be just Suguru to you."
You gazed at him, your heart fluttering with newfound affection. The weight of his words sank in, and you found yourself captivated by the vulnerability he revealed.
You promptly defended yourself, asserting, "I never said that!," with a genuine tone in your voice.
He emphasized, "Oh, but you did," his eyes now sparkling mischievously.
You insisted, your tone slightly anxious, "I absolutely did not."
He persisted, his smile growing wider, "You definitely did."
You admitted, your voice becoming softer as you revealed your uncertainties and hesitations, "Well, I'm not sure… I don't really know you."
In a theatrical gesture, he pulled you close and straddled your back, "I don't know you either," his smile widening even further, "Except for the fact that you're terrible at climbing."
You smiled and smacked his chest playfully. "Hey! You try planning an escape in this." You said as you gestured to your elaborately made dress. As you looked up to meet his gaze once more, you found him already watching you, a broad smile adorning his face and a dreamy glint in his eyes. It was a contagious expression that tugged at your lips, and you couldn’t help but smile in response.
“What?” you asked softly, your curiosity piqued.
He opened his mouth, then closed it again, contemplating his words. Finally, he spoke, his voice filled with a sincere and gentle admiration. “You are incomparable. No one told me my bride would be this beautiful."
You felt your cheeks heat up as you laid you head on his chest and you felt him lay his chin atop you intricately styled hair, not caring about how it looks. The sun was setting and it began to cast a golden glow over you and Suguru's silhouette's as love began to grow within the atmosphere.
Wedding long forgotten, you two basked in the desire within the garden, all doubts and fears left behind. Perhaps this wouldn't be this bad after all. With your Suguru, you had no doubts everything would be alright.

My Favorite Fantasy Tropes
MONSTER TROPES!
A deadly monster with a terrifying appearance bonds with a small child with its life.
An injured hero comes upon a monster, or a hero comes upon an injured monster and they understand each other. Giant vicious-looking monsters that answer to names you would give to a pet dog.
A character rescues or spares the life of a wounded or infant monster; later th fully- healed/matured creature returns the favor.
The horrifying eldritch creature that's been stalking the heroes turns out to be benevolent and actually, trying to protect them from something deadlier.
HERO TROPES!
The hero is the secret heir to a throne. It may be that he was whisked away and hidden as a child, his parents sent them away or were killed, etc.
There's someone in power in your book who might be described as "pure evil." This can feed into the "Good vs Evil" trope listed further down this list.
The hero refuses to give into the dark magic and instead ascends to a new level of power. This may change their hair to their dream color.
The hero falls in love with a princess/prince who turns out to be working with the real Dark Lord and killed her whole family just to rule the kingdom.
SETTING TROPES!
Pseudo-medieval European setting especially in places like the British Isles, France and Germany.
A library full of secret, lost, important knowledge. The characters may have to travel to this library, or they may stumble across it for some kind of revelation.
Ancient Japan/Chinese royalty setting where clues about the mystery is given out in subtle, secretive ways. Plus, the hero can't travel outside the palace.
A fantastical world can hide in plain sight without being discovered. When the secret is unmasked by the hero, he is trust into the world. Now, there's no going back.
CHARACTER RELATIONSHIP TROPES!
The characters involved don't know they're soulmates for part of the book but feel drawn to each other.
Twisting the original dynamic between characters from legends, myths and folklore
Semi-humanoid/ multi-race characters bonding with monsters/people of other race like elves, dwarves, goblins, etc.
Enemies-to-lovers
Marriages of convenience based upon political/power dynamic leverage
The main character(s), with a ton of romantic tension, must, for some reason, share a bed.
DARK FANTASY TROPES!
Magic is eveil and often The Corruption. Blood magic, human sacrifice and forsaken children are commonplace.
Magical artifacts with bad omens/curses attached to them. They require a grievous price in order to wield.
The gods are all assholes who pass time eating prayer chips and drinking soul-booze while placing bets and trolling the helpless mortals.
Organized religion of the country is Corrupt Church or Religion of Evil. The leader is totalitarian and strange cults prevail.
The dead find staying buried a little boring and resist any and all attempts to keep them buried, short of cremation or dismemberment.

renegade | aemond targaryen x oc (part ix)
a/n: Silverwing being ride-or-die is my new favourite trope
Tumblr media
Princess Aemma Velaryon's death reached Dragonstone only after her forlorn brother, Prince Lucerys, feverishly searched the seas and skies alike for any sign of her or Silverwing. All he came upon of her was the shredded length of her velvet cloak by the shores of Shipbreaker's Bay, his sister's sweet lavender perfume lost to the salt of the sea. He had clung to it like it was his lifeline, and that's how they found him in the Sea Dragon tower, within Aemma's chambers—crying his eyes out and calling out to her.
Luke sobbed deeply, pulling at his hair. "It should've been me."
Queen Rhaenyra and Prince Daemon walked in on Luke, eager to see her children again, and eventually registering his undone suffering. Once the mother noticed the familiar article of clothing—formerly her own—she went insensate. Her shoulders shook, composure gone to ashes, and sank to her knees. Daemon was stoic to the scene, save for his hand that went to direly fist at his sword.
The older prince spoke first, relieving the tension. Despite his grave face, his tone was forbidding, intending to burn. "Who the fuck did this?"
Luke's upper lip curled, his hands clenching at his sister's cape. "Him."
Nothing else needed to be said. The reality of who was capable of executing such treason was well understood, though uttering his name was like spitting venom.
Rhaenyra roared out with the visceral fury of a dragon, and once that drained, she was but an empty vessel. She heaved a solemn breath, palming at her abdomen. The misery that wracked her labours was far less cruel than whatever this was, the anguish overwhelming, her chest aching with the burden of mourning two daughters, their deaths igniting the flames of war.
When she tearily looked to her side, Daemon had disappeared.
Prince Daemon had been conditioned to barbarity and grief, so much they were welcome drinking companions of his. Aemma was no different to this addition. In her, he saw echoes of his own turbulent youth—the same steely determination, the same unpredictability, the restless drive to remain an enigma to those around her. Perhaps it was this reflection of his own wild spirit that spurred him to seek out grisly revenge.
Daemon's warpath toward Caraxes came to a sudden halt as he saw him standing before the painted table. The hollow swordsman. There one-eyed kinslayer. A mirror of Daemon's worst motivations. Here stood the rider of the beast that had slain his daughter.
Without hesitation, Daemon unsheathed Dark Sister, the Valyrian blade slicing through the air with a menacing swish.
"Poetic justice or self-destruction?" he muttered, masking his fury.
Aemond bore a black smile, barely lifting his lips. "Depends on which of us you ask, uncle."
X
Rumours had begun to spread that Aemond Targaryen had defected to the Blacks. Some even called it a surrender. Perhaps it was the stabs of a prickling conscience, the blood stains of love in his hands, or the affliction of sorrow that had overtaken him, making him ready to face the wrath of a grieving mother—and his own death. Bereft of his truest calling, shattered by dreams he had destroyed with his hands, the one-eyed prince swiftly concluded that life held no meaning without his princess. He intended to follow her footsteps soon enough, to fulfil the conclusive detail of their promise: never to part from Aemma henceforth.
Without Aemond and Vhagar, King’s Landing had become perilously vulnerable. The soaring pall of the largest and most terrifying dragon no longer loomed over the capital, and it was clear to all that their strongest defence was now absent. The Greens' was evidently morale staggered. With Vhagar’s absence, Rhaenyra’s forces could bring the fire with seven dragons and fewer consequences, and rumours of dissent spread throughout the city. The Greens were losing their grip, outmatched in numbers and firepower, leaving the smallfolk exposed and the city teetering on the edge of defeat.
Terrible fables spoke of King Aegon and Aemond One-Eye’s grandiose schemes to slay the false queen under the guise of begging for mercy. But these tales were discredited when it was revealed that Aemond had been imprisoned in the chambers of the late princess—a ruthless move orchestrated by Queen Rhaenyra. It was, in every sense, a final sentence.
“If that savage snake truly loved her,” Rhaenyra had said vengefully to her husband, “then that place will drive him mad. Let his evil haunt him. I want to see the fear in his eyes when I burn him.”
Yet fear was not something Aemond would entertain. He would sooner fall on his sword than show terror before his wretched half-sister.
Over time, however, he did fall—deeper into madness consumed by the unfamiliarity of being locked in the space that had once been Aemma’s. The burden of memory became the iron bars and chains of this prison. Numb to everything else, he wandered her chambers aimlessly, haunted by her absence. She was everywhere and nowhere at once—in the vanity, where strands of her hair clung to her hairbrush; in the bureau, where her meticulously folded maps and lists remained undisturbed; and in the faint perfume that lingered in the air, forever scenting her dresser.
A full moon's cycle passed before Aemond began hearing her voice. A breathy echo, a laughing whisper, a figment of his broken mind. With each crash of the waves against the jagged rocks beneath her balcony, he would catch that soft, familiar sound: My friend.
The echo eased him in ways nothing else could, drawing a smile to his face. If this was madness, it was madness he welcomed. My love, he thought, and in that moment, he would’ve gladly surrendered to it.
Jace was the one who finally confronted Aemond, his vengeance boiling over upon his return from the Vale. Sword in hand, he cornered the one-eyed prince in his sister's chambers. What was surprising was how the captive did not baulk at the sight of the angry prince. He simply tilted his head, offering his neck and awaiting the onslaught.
"Fucking murderous cunt," Jace spat, barely above a whisper, trembling with restrained fury.
Aemond was inured now. It resounded in his mind with every breath, a constant reminder of what he'd become. His gaze remained distant, vacant as he met Jace's stare.
"Mount your dragon," Jace ordered, dripping with disdain. "I only spare you this avail because of how dearly Aemma loved you."
Aemond didn’t even blink. It took more effort than expected to form words after days of silence.
"I will not fight you," he muttered, voice gravelly from disuse. "So, get it over with. Finish me."
But Jace wasn't about to grant him that release.
"You're coming with me," he growled, eyes blazing with wrath. "I won't believe my sister is gone until I see it with my eyes. Find me Silverwing, and only then will you get what you so desperately crave."
Aemond turned away, blinking back a rare sting of emotion clouding his vision. He had been so benumbed, that the sensation sliced him raw. His jaw clenched, forcing his voice through the anguish tightening his throat.
"Silverwing sank beneath the waves."
"Then she should've washed ashore by now," Jace snapped, his tone sharpening. "Or been spotted near Storm's End, or found by sailors off Driftmark. Someone would've seen her. I will not grieve with my family until I know for certain. Until I’ve seen damning proof."
Aemond’s teeth ground together in frustration. "My hope ended with her."
"Hope?" Jace sneered, the word wresting bitterly in his mouth. "Know this, uncle—gods forbid I find what I seek, you won’t just be dead to the realm, you’ll be nothing more than a relic of a prince no one will remember."
X
We cannot know the ancient minds of dragons. They were not merely instruments of war—they were beasts of chaos, as unreliable as the gales they rode. A bitter reminder of how little command Targaryens truly held, even over their own beasts. Yet, the Good Queen's Silverwing had always been distinct from the others—gentler, some would say, with a serenity that belied the strength coiled within her shimmering, pale-scaled body.
Her loyalty to her peaceful rider ran deeper than bloodshed or battle, for it was not assumed upon command or duty but of a friendship that transcended power. It was instinctual, a mutual loneliness that they shared. Silverwing had intuited Aemma’s presence since her first touch upon her scales, the soft whispers of affection, the implicit trust.
Following Aemma's descent from her dragon's saddle, the waters hit her hard, churning her into the abyss. Just as the waves threatened to pull her deeper, Silverwing cut through them, her talons outstretched, and in a swift, precise motion, she plucked Aemma from the depths before the sea could claim her entirely. Silverwing’s grip was painstaking, cradling her rider’s limp form between her sharp talons, ensuring she was protected. With a great struggle, Silverwing battered her wings against the storm, fighting the ocean’s pull, lifting them both back into the air, finding cover above the storm clouds.
And now, in the quiet of this remote sanctuary, camouflaged against rocks, their bond held firm, even as Aemma lay unconscious amidst the mud and grass, suspended between life and death.
The old dragon sensed more than the warmth of her rider's skin when she nudged her snout against her constantly, letting out a low, concerned rumble. She felt the pulse of her heart, flimsy but steady, the rhythm of her breath, shallow but resilient. Every beat, every rise and fall of Aemma’s chest was a call to Silverwing, one that she refused to neglect.
Silverwing would shift her body closer at night, nestling Aemma to the earth, her massive wing folded protectively over the young princess' limp body like a shroud of safety from the bitter storms and the chilliness of dusk. Her fiery breaths ghosted over Aemma, keeping her warm.
Days turned into nights, and nights into days, but Silverwing never left, only venturing far enough to find sustenance, returning quickly, her eyes scanning the skies for any threats that might approach. But none came. The world remained unaware of the little hidden firth by the hills and the fragile life it cradled.
Silverwing’s troth was not just an animal instinct—it was a devotion to the one person who had never treated her as a mere beast. For nigh on a week, Aemma had doted on her, spoken to her in the tongue of Old Valyria, just as Alysanne did, with the same reverence and care, and Silverwing, in turn, had taken her into the skies, free from the burdens of the mortal realm.
In this isolated place, far from the throes of war, Silverwing held the last vestige of hope for her rider’s survival. It wasn't until a dark-haired sailor had stumbled upon their refuge that the mighty she-dragon let out her first roar in a while.
Addam of Hull hadn't expected much that day. He had set out on his small boat with nothing but the hope of catching enough fish to feed Driftmark's shores. The oceans had been restless ever since the bloodshed over Shipbreaker's Bay, and his mind had drifted as the waves lapped at the sides of his skiff. He cast his net, whistling a well-known sea shanty, letting the salt air fill his lungs, when something unusual caught his eye, beyond a small inlet of water rambling away from the beach.
A flash of silver. A rustle in the trees.
As his little skiff crept closer and into the currents of the slight strait, Addam’s heart surged. There, nestled within the protective embrace of the rocks, lay a great silvery-blue dragon that was the name on everyone's fuller lips—Silverwing. Her glittering hide was unmistakable, though it bore the wear of days spent at the mercy of the weather. She lay low to the ground, her immense wings tucked tightly around something as if guarding a prized jewel.
Addam wasted no time. He rowed forth, with all the strength he could muster, his mind racing. Could it be? Could Princess Aemma have survived the hand of fate, the cruel sea, her murderous husband, and the relentless storm? Could it be that Rhaeynra's heir was very much still alive?
As he drew nigher, disembarking his boat and clambering up the rocks, Silverwing raised her head, her auburn eyes locking onto him with a vicious intensity. She cautioned him with a low rumble, ready to spew out her ire.
For a moment, Addam feared she truly might lash out, mistaking him for a foe, but she did not move. Instead, she took a prudent sniff and juddered her head, softening almost.
Eventually, she unfurled her wings narrowly, revealing the motionless form of Princess Aemma cradled beneath her. She was drenched, emaciated, tattered, bruised, and her silver hair matted to her gaunt face, but her chest rose and fell.
There was yet life in her. Barely. All alone. No one else. Just Silverwing standing vigil over her as if she’d been guarding the princess all these days. Ten days.
"Gods be good," Addam murmured.
Silverwing shifted away, stooping into the rocky niche, as if to offer her rider to him, but kept her weather eye on him. Addam made quick work of it, lifting her carefully into his arms off the wet ground. She was light, too light, but she stirred faintly at his touch.
"Princess?" He was unsure if she could hear him.
As he carried her back toward the boat, shrouded her in the coils of his nets, her fiery guardian observed the sailor, her vigilant eyes never leaving Aemma’s form.
She pierced a startling trill at her rider's saviour.
Addam jerked in shock, nearly dropping his docking ropes.
Silverwing rose off the ground, and shook herself off, wings beginning to unfurl as if preparing to take flight.
"You—er, stay," Addam stammered, desperately gesturing with his palms, trying to convey some form of command to the dragon.
He knew full well he was speaking to a creature that answered to no man but her rider, and she was not going to let just anyone snatch the princess away unless she was certain they meant no harm.
Carefully, Addam took a step closer, heart thudding in his chest as he bowed his head to the dragon.
"I'm not here to harm her," he said softly as if Silverwing could understand his plea. "I want to save her."
For a long moment, the dragon stayed unmoving, watching him closely, casting her own unfamiliar judgement. Then, with a slow and deliberate movement, she backed away scarcely.
"Thank you," he whispered, though he wasn’t entirely sure if he was thanking the dragon, the gods, or fate itself.

Returning Princess Aemma in such a state to her kin on Dragonstone would have them questioning Addam's heartening intentions toward her. Rather than have them cast their vile aspersions on him and taint his shoddy name further, the brothers knew it was only proper to nurse the princess to health before anything else. The secret of Aemma's survival would remain closely guarded for a while longer.
"She thinks I'm her father," Addam quietly shared with his brother, Alyn, upon the fifth evening of secretively nursing Princess Aemma in their meagre home. It had been a total of sixteen days since she was believed deceased.
Alyn raised an eyebrow, glancing over at the small, makeshift room where their heir to the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms lay in a thrifty cot, wrapped in linen blankets and tended to with great care. Her condition had steadily improved, but she remained barely conscious and frail.
"What do you mean, ‘she thinks I’m her father’? Is she delirious?" He asked.
Addam leaned against the doorframe, picking off the herbs from his thumb. "Perhaps she seeks comfort. And she finds it in the late Laenor."
As they spoke, a soft groan emanated from the cot, interrupting them. Aemma stirred, her dark eyes fluttering open briefly before closing again. Her lips moved silently, murmuring incoherent words. Addam and Alyn exchanged a glance, their choices harshening.
Alyn's brow furrowed. "How is she then?"
"Better than expected," Addam replied, shaking his head. "Her fever broke, I've stopped feeding her milk of the poppy. She recalls her mother often. The poor thing had nearly cracked every rib in her chest, the healers had to brace her spine with wood until yesterday. The blood of Old Valyria heals quick, I suppose."
Alyn nodded, absorbing the solemnity of his brother’s words. "And the dragon?"
"Stays close, hovers around the Driftmark groves. I've been feeding her, too," Addam said, shaking his head with a small, wry smile.
Alyn clapped his brother on his back, grateful for him. "How are you faring?"
Addam shrugged casually. "I’m doing what I can."
"Good. Keep watch," Alyn instructed, nodding at him. "On the morrow, I’ll prepare a fresh supply of herbs and check on the guards. There's only so long that we can keep her out of prying eyes."
Addam sat by the firelight in the hearth, his eyes constantly drifting to the young girl as she lay nestled beneath the heavy blankets, adjusting them around her again, his movements careful, almost tender. Every now and then, Aemma would stir, her brow twitching in her sleep, speaking illegibly. The flicker of the flames stained her face in hues of gold and shadow, silvery hair glinting, making her seem almost unearthly, untouchable. She could not have been older than fifteen, an age no child should have to raise battlements in a war.
“She’s strong,” Addam murmured, more to himself than to anyone in particular. “Stronger than I imagined.”
"A future queen," Alyn said. "There's hope for her yet."
X
The second sons of the Blacks and Greens, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon and Aemond Targaryen, were unlikely allies as they scoured the realm despite their bitterness, united on a front to find a whiff of Aemma or Silverwing, searching high and low, from the misty mountains of the Vale to the shadowed peaks of Harrenhal and the foggy forests of the Riverlands. Every whisper of a silver-blue dragon sighting raised their hopes, only to be dashed moments later.
The weight of Aemma's absence dangled over them like a blade. Jace was fierce, relentless in finding that damned dragon himself, dead or alive. Maybe they were on a wild goose chase, led astray to not confront the reality that awaited them. Every dead end with clueless lords and fishermen was a new wound, yet he never yielded.
Aemond, however, wore a stoic mask over his understanding of the truth, though beneath it, the torment tore at his soul. If Aemma's room had been perfect chaos, this was his purgatory. His nights grew sleepless, plagued by the recollections of his mistakes, the sight of her empty saddle still burned behind his eyes. He carried the guilt like a second skin, abrading when it got too thin. A little part of him was driven to heed Jace, an insignificant confidence, not by burden but by desperation—a need for redemption, to see her alive, to prove to himself that she had somehow survived.
Now, close to five nights, it had become custom for Jace, drunk on grief and rage, to drag his feet outside Aemond's pitched tent, embracing his shining sword, fighting his morals. Fighting the inevitable. Jace never spoke to Aemond directly, but his accusations found a way into his earshot.
"Aemma was good. Peaceful," he would hear Jace lament. "She had dreams. She was our sunshine. Now she’s out there somewhere, alone in death. Or worse. And you, of all people, claim to be the one who loved her? You never did. You fucking murderer. Selfish cunt."
This night, a familiar darkness flickered alight in Aemond. Unfailing despair powered him to react. He walked out of his tent, stepping forward in a threat until Jace's raging face was inches apart, his sword slipping from his grasp. His single eye narrowed.
"Say it again," Aemond dared, his voice low and cold. "Say that I do not love her. Say it, bastard."
Jace shoved him by his chest, his rage boiling over. "You threw her away like she was nothing! For your treacherous family! You never gave a fuck about her, and that is the truth!"
Aemond stumbled back but didn’t fight back. How could he, he had nothing left to withstand. His mouth twisted in pain, but his voice remained hard.
"Hate me all you want. Blame me. Strike me down. Your words hold facts. But don’t think for one second that your fury burns hotter than mine own. Or that your love transcends mine own."
"Fuck you!"
Jace shoved him again, shouting out his rage, this time harder, the power of his wrath pushing Aemond back a step. And again and again, until Aemond fell back into the mud. Back again to ten years ago, when a spiteful Aegon had towered over him, Sunfyre peering over his shoulder mockingly.
Jace met his gaze, the two facing eye to eye, the consequence of years of rivalry and betrayal still fresh between them. But beneath it, there was something else now—shared desperation, grief that only they could understand. The closest brother of Aemma and her husband.
Aemond's breath hitched, bearing himself with his palms, the words barely escaping through his gritted teeth. He looked Jace in the eye, his jaw tight.
"I have nothing left. Seize your sword and end it all."
Jace leaned down, seething, his voice trembling with scorn. "Look at where your absolution got you. Begging your foes for death. Pathetic."
Aemond’s hand twitched toward his dagger on instinct, his face a storm of rage and remorse. He had been so accustomed to being on his back, bearing through the punches thrown, facing defeat, now when he was made to encounter this yet again.
"Yes. That is all you see," Aemond agreed, his expression darkening. "All you ever see. Aegon, Rhaenyra, you. A pathetic boy too sightless for power. I've belonged nowhere but with Aemma all my life"—his voice cracked—"and now she's gone, too. And I am left trapped in this resenting world."
Jace stayed quiet, breathing deeply.
"I could not save her," he whispered, the words hollow as they left him. "No atonement will ever free me from this, even while I chase forgiveness from a ghost. I will never know peace again until my last breath."
His trembling fingers unsheathed his dagger and threw it to Jace's feet. "Make your shot count, nephew. Plunge it into my other eye, and take what is due. I do not care anymore."
Jace’s mouth opened, but no words came out. He took a step back, torn between fury and pity, his expression unreadable. He looked away, blinking back tears as if the significance of Aemond’s words was too much to bear. He couldn’t bring himself to speak—there was nothing left to say.
"You don't deserve peace, not even in death," Jace eventually whispered before walking away.
X
The air was dense with the scent of salt and damp wood as Aemma lay in a bed draped with soft linens, the faint sounds of the lapping waves against the rocky shores of Driftmark echoing in her ears. Her body felt heavy, as though weighed down by an invisible force. Pain coursed through her like a vicious tide, abrupt and relentless, yet there was a warmth surrounding her that whispered of safety.
Fingers of consciousness began to weave their way through the fog enveloping her mind. Flashes of memory flickered like distant constellations—Silverwing’s fierce wings, the chaos of the storm, and Addam’s urgent voice calling her name. She struggled against the haze, her heart pounding with the remnants of fear and desperation.
"Aemma." The voice broke through her reverie, softer now, tinged with concern.
She fought to open her eyes, the effort feeling monumental. Slowly, her eyelids fluttered, and the dim light of the stuffy room began to emerge. A figure stood at the foot of the bed, cloaked and hooded, shrouded in shadow.
A wave of shock washed over her, and before she could fully grasp the situation, he lunged forward, pressing a warm hand to her lips to silence her gasp. Heart racing, Aemma’s gaze narrowed, the edges of her memory sharpening.
"Ssh, my love," he shushed her.
She recognized the intensity in his gaze, even from beneath the hood. He hovered close, his presence both alarming and strangely familiar. His silver hair rolled off his neck and shoulders, catching the light and casting shadows that accentuated the depth of his expression. One striking violet eye shone through the darkness, piercing and filled with emotion, while the other was shrouded in shadow.
“Aemond,” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper, like the faintest breeze. It felt like a lifetime since she had last spoken, her throat dry and cracked.
He flinched at the sound of her voice as if she had struck a nerve. Slowly, he lifted his head, an indigo eye swirling with a charged storm—pain, regret, and something darker lurking beneath the surface.
His voice was as firm as steel, yet equally gentle. "We've done our parts here. You’re coming with me, and this time, forever."

As I’m sure you know, Hazbin Hotel’s central character is the princess of Hell, Charlie Morningstar. A lot of people have said a lot of things about her, but I’m here to touch on a subject that doesn’t get brought up much: her title.
Part 1: What does “Princess of Hell” really mean?
When most people think of princesses, they tend to imagine Disney ones. Fancy dresses, animal sidekicks, singing a lot, all that jazz. Charlie tends to engage in musical numbers, and she does have a few marketable pets, but her wardrobe is severely lacking. Clothes are an excellent way to signify a character’s job and status. If you put a character in a big sparkly dress, everybody looking at them will go “yep, that’s a princess.” So far, Charlie’s never worn one of those. Her main outfit is the suit-bow tie combo that Medrano just loves, making her feel like every other demon in the crowd.
Okay, maybe Earth and Hell are different in this regard. (Heh, that’d be a first.) Maybe high-status demons don’t wear fancy clothes! Except we’re forgetting one detail: the Goetias. They also use titles like “prince” and stuff, and they’re always dressed to impress! The one exception to this is Octavia, but that’s most likely because of her teenage angst, a trait Charlie doesn’t share.
While we’re talking about the Goetias, there’s another thing worth bringing up. As previously stated, they tend to use royal titles. Stolas is a prince, and he’s supposedly one of the less important ones! Stella’s a royal of some flavor, and that might not have even been through marriage! Compounding on this, the Deadly Sins are all stated to be the king/queen of their respective sin! Or have we forgotten Miss Queen Bee’s antics? With all these royals running around kissing and/or shooting each other, Charlie is once again lost in a crowd of standard Tumblrized monsters.
So maybe her royal title isn’t the important part. Maybe what really matters is that she’s Lucifer’s kid. Makes sense, right? Well, no. The purpose of an heir is to take control of their parental figure’s assets (Hell, in our case) after said parental figure kicks the bucket. This doesn’t work here, since Lucifer’s immortal! He sure ain’t goin’ anywhere! Historically, princesses were mostly just used as bargaining chips to marry off to other kingdoms in exchange for stuff. That really doesn’t work here, because in this show there are no other kingdoms! You really think the ruling powers in Heaven are gonna want their kids marrying some demon?
So now that we’ve established that the title ‘Princess of Hell’ is virtually meaningless, we reach my second point: why even have it?
Part 2: Why even have it?
As any good English teacher will tell you, everything within a story was done for a reason. Yet, Charlie being a princess serves no narrative purpose. She never uses her title to get what she wants, and everyone around her treats her exactly the same way they’d treat any other demon. You could say it was to introduce Lucifer more organically into the story, but there’s other ways to do that.
One of the many, many aspects of storytelling that Medrano struggles with is the act of killing your darlings. What that means is, if something in your story isn’t doing much and thus has no reason to exist, get rid of it, no matter how much you like it. Viv’s inability to do this is the reason everything she writes has so damn many characters, and by extension why almost none of them are remotely interesting. A character being the Devil’s daughter sounds interesting, but if the writers can’t make it interesting, they shouldn’t do it.
So, why did Viv make Charlie a princess? Here’s my theory; writers want their main characters to be relatable to general audiences, and Viv must’ve forgotten that general audiences aren’t composed of upper-class white women whose every need and want is supplied by their affluent parents. To the rest of us, such a character risks invoking that very worst of writing tropes. I won’t type it right here, but it has seven letters and sounds like hairy stew.

Your father had ruled over the kingdom of Ethera for as long as you could remember. Your twenty-one birthday has arrived, and the kingdom will soon be yours. It was a family tradition; 21 was the ideal age, and you were more than prepared to follow it and rule the kingdom.
Or so you repeated to yourself insistently in the mirror as you stood alone in your room during a full moon night.
Your hair was loose, and your face looked tired, but the moonlight illuminated it fiercely bringing out your deep-set eyes and moving lips. The candles had long since gone out, and you had been trying for about two hours to repeat in a low voice the speech you had prepared for the next day - and you knew it by now by feel.
Actually, you were used to talking in public; after all, you were a princess and had often found yourself having to communicate with the people of your kingdom.
You did not despise the court world, and you were willing to continue to conduct an approach of peace and, at the same time to preserve the interest of your people. You had altruistic goals; you would put your devotion to the people who so admired you in front of everyone.
At the same time you had always been firm and thoughtful in your decisions, everyone believed that you would only make shine the kingdom.
Your kingdom.
For on that night, you were not the only one divided between fears, agitations, tensions, and concerns; everyone was just as nervous (almost) as you. Everyone was looking forward to the next day, when a golden crown with a crimson ruby would be placed on your head, forever changing your life.
And your mother was writing the letter you'd receive on your birthday the next day; this was a tradition she'd kept since you were born. Twenty-one letters would be delivered tomorrow, all from her, lovingly talking about you, your growth, and the strong bond and responsibility that was going to blossom.
However, those are not the only letters you will receive tomorrow. You snorted at the idea; you were tired of letters that were large and inflated in style but hollow in content from various princes who lusted only after the status of king.
The prospect of spending the next evening politely rejecting all the guys, all under your father's severe gaze, made you shudder slightly.
You got up from your chair where you were sitting and went to fetch a small medium of paper that you so secretly hid under the floorboards.
There was the letter there that made your heart flutter the most, the letter where the power of the content was more than enough to make you daydream of a happy and perfect future.
Not to misinterpret you, your future as queen appeared perfect to you... but there was one condition that has not yet been mentioned so this perfection was not only in appearance.
One more condition for your perfect future.
By your side, you would have wanted no one but the author of that letter - the only writing of which was "To my Y/n." ; in which your name was written without preciseness, with a poorly practiced stroke and a few erasures.
By your side, you would have wanted no one but Yang Jungwon.
Not a noble prince, not a rich king nor a refined marquis.
Rather, the court gardener.
Well yes, you read it well. You had fallen in love with the court gardener.
You had quickly given up fairy tales about princesses falling in love with the charming prince after he saves her from an evil dragon.  Because you got lost in the young gardener's hazel eyes as you first spoke to him.
-We can ignore that your first conversation began when he gently (and maybe cheekily) critiqued you for wanting to pick the flowers early. -
You initially tried to hide the blush that appeared on your cheeks when he spoke to you. But you soon noticed that he didn't understand what was going on because he leaned toward you and placed his hand on your forehead. He was instinctively concerned that you did not have a fever.
"Your Highness. You are warm. I wonder if you have a fever." he had told you surprised.
"Of course. It's the middle of summer, and we've been under the sun for at least five minutes," you had promptly lied as you turned to allow your blush to fade.
He had nodded, and after a slight bow and a polite goodbye, he had turned away. And he had gone back to caring for the plants he so loved.
He moved agilely through the field of flowers, hopping from one side to the other where he would pause for a few seconds to observe every plant; and after a few whispered reflections he would run into his toolshed and come out with some new essence to give to the plants to allow them to cool off on that hot summer day.
For moments that seemed interminable, you stood watching that boy, while your guard had stepped aside and was in turn, watching you from a distance.
Jungwon appeared so focused, so happy and so at ease while surrounded by so many colorful flowers and plants. You had been so mesmerized that you had almost forgotten about the heat you were taking. As soon as this realization came to you - maybe because he had noticed that you were still there or maybe because twenty minutes in the hot sun would have drained anyone - you felt a great heat and a great struggle to remain impassive.
You made to turn away, but soon he caught up with you even before your bodyguard could notice. As he watched with his careful gaze those colorful flowers he so adored, at that moment he was watching you as your face was red, and your gaze fixed on his.
As soon as he had noticed your astonished look, he had looked away and explained that he had reached out to you to make sure you were all right. Emphasizing that you had reached in your face the color of the red dahlias flower that he had pointed out to you as he spoke those words
It was on that summer day when you had almost fainted from the heat, that you had begun to like that precious gardener.
You had thus begun to spend whole nights fantasizing about him, and whole days observing him from afar.
Within a year you would become queen, never a love affair with the gardener would be well-liked. But as with all forbidden things, the more you tried to suppress these feelings the more they grew.
In an attempt to get to know him better, you had also made the first move - was this controversial? Weren't you supposed to just like him from afar? Well yes, but we are talking about young love so everything is acceptable.
You listened to each other, and slowly the tender love blossomed in your hearts.
Without your being able to realize it, your talks had been increasingly crowned with romantic words and gestures of more than kindness or mere formal politeness.
Jungwon was now talking to you about flowers and plants that reminded him of you: your scent, the blush on your cheeks, your bright face, your personality - indeed once he had explained to you how (according to him) each flower had a specific personality.
And you hung on his words, feeling vulnerable and bewitched before his words and sincerity. No malice, no other reasons, was it just a dream?
No. He was more than just a dream.
You also now spoke freely to him about all your interests, and he listened in silence, nodding. Sometimes he lost the thread because he focused a little too much on your figure, your beauty, your words, your gentle manners, your reddish lips…
Months had passed, and love after blooming like a flower now let its intense scent fill the air.
And without you both realizing it you were caught in the web woven by this intense scent and decided to start dating.
Secret dating. No one was supposed to know about you. You did not want any grumbles, complaints, protests, or obstacles. You just wanted to savor as much as possible, that young love that was as sweet as the scent of apricot - to Jungwon that scent reminded him of honey.
And as you remembered that, so many other things you knew about him. He had told you how he ended up being a royal gardener, following in his father's footsteps - who had died a few years earlier.
He had also told you, during one of your discreet late-night dates in the garden under the weeping willow tree, that he had fallen in love with the as beautiful as a faraway princess long ago. However, he wasn't expecting to be able to express his feelings, and even less had he hoped to be able to kiss the beautiful princess under that tree.
His initial shyness now appeared only in the most intimate moments, when, for example, you would interrupt one of his speeches with a kiss. Always apologizing by saying it was too irresistible, like a beautiful flower, so he would blush like a newly bloomed red rose, and you could do nothing but kiss those rosy cheeks again and again.
It happened that admirers would come to you to ask for your hand, and because Jungwon knew he had no chance of making them go away. So, to remind you of his closeness - but let's be honest, he was incredibly jealous - he would bring you a bouquet each time to keep in the room in which you would meet your admirer.
"You will look at these dahlias, and you will remember our first meeting. So it is as if I were there with you love," he had whispered to you once when you had found each other under the weeping willow.
He had called you by that nickname for the first time on that night, and if we think that just the pronunciation of your name sounded as sweet as an apricot - let's talk about how much that nickname completely melted you.
And so the meetings with the admirers passed quickly, you remained unemotional, your eyes fixed on the flowers as you contemplated when you might see Jungwon again.
The evening would come, and like every time you would sneak out and stand under the weeping willow tree to wait for your beloved.
One evening he was late, very late. Circumstances that had never happened, he was always early. You worried.
But it was no use because when he arrived he held in his hands a candle, a piece of paper, and a fountain pen - and in his teeth, a red rose he had shyly held out to you.
"Please teach me how to write, princess. I want to be able to make eternal the thoughts I want to dedicate to you. I want something you can always bring with you that will remind you of me and my devotion."
So you taught it to him that night, and the first thing he wrote, after multiple tries to write flower names, was on the piece of paper you clenched to your heart on that spring night before your coronation.
That night, the silence seemed timeless and peaceful.
But an odd noise outside the window made you gasp. Who on earth would have thrown you an apricot in the middle of the night? Who else but your beloved?
You giggled at the fruit splayed at the window, and promptly opened it to check if it was still down there.
And there it was, looking dreamily toward your room's window on the second floor.
As soon as your gazes met, both of you blushed and reddened, like dahlias, and you moved to lower a rope ladder, allowing him to enter your room.
As soon as he arrived, he took you in his arms, as if he had been waiting all day for this moment. He kissed you, grabbing your face. And in one kiss, all of the worries that had been bothering you only moments before slipped away.
The silence in your room was filled only with delicate kissing noises and pleasure-filled whispers.
You remained in front of the window, lost in each other's arms, almost attempting to unite and conjugate your love.
While you were feeling all of this, he quickly took your face in his hands, drew your faces closer together, gave you a shy kiss on the nose, and then whispered words so sweet...like apricots.
No matter what the next day would be like, for nothing in the world would you have given up on him. And he would not give up on you.
You were talking about this when you had found yourselves admiring the sunrise from under your weeping willow tree when your kingdom rose and your promise of eternal love was renewed.
Whatever the next day brought, you would never have given up on him; and he refused to give up on you.
You were talking about this while appreciating the morning under your weeping willow tree when your kingdom rose and your promise of forever love was born.

Hyunjin was a mere pawn in the Game set by his own parents. His parents - common nobles in The empire of Obelia. His parents - cruel, opportunistic and selfish. At age 12, when his brother and sister were born. His parents decided to abandon him. Too troubled by the though of having to spend Millions on their three kids. Lost, alone and frightened, on his 13th birthday, he was adopted by a brothel. The owner of a brothel. A kind hearted woman, Yoona, who decided that It would be best for Hyunjin to not be involved in a proffesion like Prostitution. Hyunjin was cooped up in his little House for as long as he remembers. Rarely he would go out to Observe nature and make friends. Even when Yoona tried to get him outside. After Yoona's death. He Wandered into the Brothel. Curious and filled with questions.
That's when he met you.
The crown princess. A lady forced to disguise as her brother. All because of her parents. When her brother, overwhelmed by the responsibilities of the Crown prince, ran away, it was upto you to save your own brother's reputation, even if it meant to taint yours. Your parents, believing your little act, on your 23rd birthday, decided to send you to a brothel. Swarmed by women, you had no interest in, your gaze traveled to Him. He, who was standing, uninterested, leaned up against the wall. 'That lady will do, just fine.'
You thought. Unaware of the fact that this 'lady' was a man.
"Long live the sun and star of Obelia!" The old Man at the Door of the Brothel exclaimed. His grey hair slicked back, black glasses perched upon his nose. His voice was gruff but he had a warm smile on his face.
The King's strict glare shut him off.
The man, opened the large gate.
The moment he did, your gaze was met with atleast 20 women. The King, put a hand on your back and led you forward.
Women, came rushing in. Excited looks on their faces. Their outfits were rather.....revealing.
The king leaned down to your height and whispered.
"Choose wisely."
Not interested in any way. Your eyes travels to the 'lady', dressed up in a white shirt and pant, leaned up against the wall. Inspecting her nails. Her beauty was a bit masculine. But she was oddly ethereal.
You pointed your finger to her. Gasps were heard. You look at your father, rather puzzled at the reactions from the women in the Brothel.
The king's burning eyes glared at the crowd. "Did you not hear him? Are you perhaps deaf? Get that woman ready for My son."
"But-your majesty!"
"Do. I. Have. To. Repeat. Myself?"
The woman flinched, She stared at the 'lady' in the corner. Who remained unaware of the unfolding argument about her
"No, your majesty."
The 'lady' in the corner was dragged away from the room.

“Lift your arms please.”
You raise your arms int a T position standing in front of a large mirror in your room. Your royal seamstress was assigned to making you 3 new dresses which you felt was unnecessary but your father insisted.
“Alright. Measurements are taken. They should be complete within the week, your highness.”
“Thank you. If that’s all I’m going to get dressed and head out to lunch.”
The seamstress bows to you whilst your handmaids help you get dressed in your corseted undergarments followed by your emerald green gown. The velvet cloth draped around your body was free flowing. The sleeves flared past your elbows and the fabric only cinched in at your waist, flowing delicately till it reached the floor. Your dresses tended to be comfortable and modest despite the tightness of your corset underneath. Your mother disapproved, suggesting that your tastes needed to be upto the standards of other royal members your age but you never felt the appeal of the more form fitting dresses or the lower, square necklines.
Once you were dressed and had accessorised with your simple diamond set, you are escorted to the dining room by the bodyguards outside your room.
“Ah, there you are! We’d been wondering what had happened to you,” your mother exclaims, her face gleaming with a joy that you couldn’t figure out. Whilst your parents weren’t overly strict, they were never the type to pamper anyone. Their smiles were few and far in between so naturally you were suspicious.
You take your seat opposing your mother at the head of the 10 foot long table, scanning the food in front of you. You were aware of your privilege and so each meal was one filled with gratitude.
“We have something to tell you,” your father began as the servants began filing your plates with food.
“You’re of age now and it’s about time we found you a husband. As you know, the laws of our kingdom forbid a female heir unless married to noble blood and as your father grows old, the time for you to step up as queen gets closer. So we’ve been decided that it’s time for you to choose your marriage partner.”
You fail to comprehend any of the information that darts towards you only understanding the words marriage and husband.
“But mother! Do I not get a choice in this! What if I don’t want to get married? Not yet at least. There’s still so much I have to learn and know about the world before I’m even remotely ready. You must understand that surely.”
“This is your duty! As the only female heir of Emberfall, you cannot refuse. We will not hear of it. You cannot let your people down and we will not let the bloodline of this kingdom be lost to the failure of marriage. You will marry within the year and that’s final. We have chosen 5 princes from nearby kingdoms in hopes of forming an alliance. They will arrive next week and you will choose your husband amongst them,” your father’s tone was cold as he lectures you. You immediately see your fate of marriage presented in front of your eyes. Misery, dependence and entrapment. The three things you feared the most.
The rest of the meal was silent as you manage to eat a few more bites of your breakfast before storming out. You head straight to your chambers, distraught over the news that struck like lightning. All your life had been building upto this moment and you knew but at the same time you were hoping for a change in laws. Why was it that a woman couldn’t rule without a man by her side? The laws created decades ago had never been changed. Trying to change them would be considered treason against royal traditions and customs. You could only hope that one of your prospects would be somewhat likeable particularly if you were to be spending the rest of your lives together.
A week later….
“Your highness, the royal seamstress is here with your new gowns.”
You were gazing out your arched windows when your handmaid calls out to you.
“Of course, let her in.”
You stand up from your seat at the window sill, making your way to the circular stand in front of your mirror as the seamstress and her assistants enter holding 3 large boxes in addition to 2 bags.
“Your dresses are ready your highness. These styles are slightly different to the ones you usually wear but your mother insisted.”
You get through the first 2 dresses amazed by the way they look on you.
“Here try this one. It’s a truly special gown,” the seamstress points to the last box as the assistant places it at the table opening up the box revealing a rich scarlet dress, the silk of the dress reflecting the light that casts through your windows. The dress is taken out of the box as you slip into the gown staring at your reflection in the mirror.
The dress hangs on your dress in such a delicate manner. One wrong move and everything would go wrong. The straps hang off your shoulder, showcasing your collarbones as your chest is pushed up against the low sweetheart neckline, revealing some cleavage. The corset held your waist in as the dress hugs your figure only flaring out slightly past your thighs, leaving your shape on full display, whilst the slit inches up your leg.
Whilst this was new for you, you couldn’t argue that the designs of the dresses were the most beautiful you had ever worn.
“Your highness,” your handmaid bows upon the arrival of your mother.
“Darling you look beautiful. Your future husband is going to adore you!”
The compliment felt genuine. For the first time your mother has commented on your looks in a way which wasn’t diminishing. Maybe a new look was needed.
“I have a gift for you,” she says, opening a jewellery box, revealing the most dazzling diamond necklace you had ever laid your eyes on, “This was my mothers necklace that she gave to me before I got married to your father. Now that you’re about to pick your groom, I think it should belong to you.”
“Thank you, mother.”
She stands behind you, clasping the necklace onto your neck.
“It looks beautiful on you. Matches the dress too. I think you should stay in this dress. The 5 princes are set to arrive within the next few hours.”
“What? Why did no one tell me?!”
“We did tell you. We said the princes were arriving today last week at breakfast.”
Now that she mentions it, you remember it vaguely but back then you were too focused on the prospect of getting married to some stranger that this information flew over your head.
“Now finish getting ready and be at the throne room in the next few hours.” With that your mother leaves as you’re left staring at yourself in the mirror. You admired yourself in the dress you were wearing, feeling the material touch your palms as you observed every detail of the dress.
“Your highness, there’s still these two bags but since your mother wants you to stay in this dress, I shall leave them here for you to try on later. If you have any problems with them, please send them to me straight away.”
“Thank you, I’m sure everything will be fine. And thank you for these beautiful gowns.”
“Oh there’s no need for your thank yous, it’s always a pleasure your highness. It that is all I must be getting back.”
She and her assistants bow to you before bidding you a due. Your handmaids finish getting you ready before escorting you to the throne room.
The space was vast and empty apart from the 3 thrones that sat against the wall straight ahead and the paintings hung on either sides of the wall, filling the entire space. When you hosted balls, the room always came alive but most days it was simply empty and unused.
You greet your parents who were avidly waiting for your arrival and you took your seat beside your father. The members of the court also arrived shortly after and the room was soon bustling with chatter when the sound of a horn silenced everyone.
“The princes have arrived, your highness,” announces the page.
“Good, let them in.”
The double wooden doors are pushed open revealing 5 tall men wearing forest green, your kingdoms colour. Their walk towards you is charismatic and full of charm, each prince reacting differently upon seeing you. Your quick scan of their faces lead you to finding your childhood friend, Kai. He smiles at you as you take a quick glance at him, pulling a face that only he could decode. You were glad for the familiar face but the idea of marrying your best friend felt wrong. Your friendship was strong and you did not want to destroy it through marriage.
“Welcome to Emberfall! We are glad you arrived safely and you’ve each been assigned some of our best servants who will help you with your preparations to win my daughter’s hand in marriage.”
“We’re grateful that you considered us, your highness. I am Yeonjun, Prince of Aesteria. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
“I’m Soobin, Prince of Alvendale,” his voice shakes slightly as he bows in your direction. You find his nervousness cute, letting out a silenced chuckle.
“Prince of Eldoria. My name is Beomgyu. Nice to meet you princess,” he smirks, his confidence exuding in his introduction. You could tell he was going to be a mischievous one.
“I’m Taehyun, your highness, Prince of  Valencrest.”
“And I’m Kai, Prince of Solara.”
You couldn’t help but giggle at your friend’s introduction. It was as if it was the first time meeting him when in fact your family had known his since before the two of you were born.
“Send your regards to your father Kai,” your father interjects, “Now the introductions are made, you may join us for lunch after you get settled in your rooms. Your servants will escort you.”
The court is dismissed as you arise from the throne and make your way down to meet Kai.
“I didn’t know you were one of my options! Why didn’t you write to me?”
“Trust me I would have but I only found out a few days ago. Turns out my older brother was meant to be here but he disappeared and so I was his replacement.”
“Well that’s good then. I can’t stand your brother. It’s nice having a familiar face around.”
After engaging in more conversation, you separate ways only meeting again at lunch.
When you arrived, 3 of the princes had already arrived, taking a seat beside either of your parents: Kai sat to the left of your father, Soobin next to him and Taehyun sat besides your mother. You contemplate where to take your seat and decide to sit besides Taehyun, facing Soobin. Yeonjun and Beomgyu arrive minutes later, apologising for their delay as they scowl at each other and sit on opposite ends of the table, with Beomgyu next to you.
Lunch was served promptly and the meal began in silence, everyone focused on their own plates. You eye Soobin opposite you and see him struggling to choose which spoon to use for his soup. Slightly confused, you point out the correct spoon earning you a smile of gratitude.
“So, what does everyone like to do in their spare time?” You were desperate to break the silence.
“Well I like reading. Our castle has one of the largest libraries in the realm, so I tend to spend at least a few hours a day reading and researching. What about you Princess?” Taehyun was the first to respond, his voice seemed enthusiastic as he described his hobby.
“Not much of a reader but I love taking a stroll in the castle gardens.”
“I see,” his voice held a tone of disappointment, knowing that his interests did not match yours.
“What about the rest of you? I know that you love playing your instruments, Kai. What about you Soobin?”
“Umm… I guess I also like taking a stroll around the castle garden. There’s so much to see out there.”
You acknowledged his response by nodding and smiling but you got the feeling that there was something he was hiding.
“I quite like horse riding princess. Usually I’m up early and on a horse. Have you ever ridden?” Beomgyu answers.
“No, never dared to. I find that my feet are usually capable of taking me where I want to.”
“Well maybe I could teach you. If you’re not scared that is,” his smirk once again highlights his self-assurance, constantly pushing the limits.
“Well I’m also a rider. I could teach you too, and in fact I’d probably be better than Beomgyu. I’ve had more experience.” Yeonjun interjects.
They both glare at each other from opposite ends of the table and Beomgyu moves his chair closer to you, almost as if he were marking his territory which Yeonjun could not reach.
“Well, why don’t you pick one of them to teach you. It may teach you something,” your father suggests.
Pick one of them? But who?
