Spec Evo Vault, Gourmand
Tumblr media
In the world of "The New Dinosaurs", Tyrannosaurs in general managed to stay for a while as the dominant predatory "Carnosaurs" in the north regions until they slowly were replaced, but on the Neotropical regions (South America) of earth, on the grasslands of the far south, a relict survived from a branch that split out and leaked through a early land bridge across the continent around 55 million years ago.
From there the Gourmand evolved, it followed the trend of larger, even heavier big head tyrannosaurs, which lost their arms in the totality of the structure, neither atrophied bones of the shoulder girdle remained, meanwhile its legs and pelvis have adjusted to hold the even more massive body, as it not longer possess the tall more gracile bulk form that helped it to maintain a long distance gape, but a very robust and short leg form that allows it to sustain and balance the elongated form.
The early account of this titanic theropod remark that due to their massive size they Gourmand is incapable to hunt down large prey so they rely on feed on dead carcasses an digest them in long periods of time resting in the grass, having its long armor that protect it against any other predatos.
Is capable to unhinge the mandibles being capable to gobble up any potential meal, which for the lack of any shoulder bone it allows it to properly take large prey like a deep water fish.
Tumblr media
In the manga though, from what I have hear (haven't been able to see the content for myself) there is the reference the Gourmand actually being more active and responsive towards any other predator capable to take down Cutlasstooth like in the cover, unlike the implication of the original book which depicted it as a very slow creature.

Comments and notes -I guess is interesting how this almost looks like a idealization of the "Scavenger tyrannosaur" hypothesis that have been existing for a century and went more popular around paleocircles in the late 90s and early 2000s for Horner, is not like Dixon was defending this idea maybe more like it was considered plausible if theropods became even bigger they would become slower animals that couldn't hunt its prey but go for an easy meal like a corpse, and so, depend more of scavenging.
Tumblr media
-The way his jaw disarticulates from the skull always seemed strange to me, almost as if the jaw doesn't have an extra bone that allows it to extend, sort of like a quadrate snake that offers that extension, it just falls off and is hold by pure muscle. As well for a group characterized for the lowest kinetic skulls ever, would be odd they reverse this specialization only to become gobblers, would be likely a strong mandible could offer more opportunities to consume a prey. Even with the chance a tyrannosaur skull could become more kinetic, it likely would depend on expand the jaw structure around without detaching the lower jaw, like is inferred some theropods would have do, and specifically how it was found in spinosaurs.
Tumblr media
-I think is interesting there might be more tyrannosaurs living in the new dinosaurs book with a mildly success, the gourmand is the only described species of the group and for the the width of the lineage in the table it really imply they are doing something decent with the number of species, where exactly are living is unknown

The one thing my dad wanted to do in New York was visit the natural history museum to see the dinosaur footprint trackways- he wasn’t amused when I told him there were some on the sidewalk outside the museum as well

Playtime for young kea birds! There’s a benefit to this apparently carefree behavior. It helps establish long-lasting relationships between the youngsters and even diffuses tension. David Attenborough | BBC Earth

If you’ve visited the Museum, you’re certainly familiar with today’s Fossil Friday feature: the Barosaurus and Allosaurus in the Rotunda! Rising 50 ft (15 m) above the ground, it’s the world’s tallest freestanding dinosaur mount. In this scene, a Barosaurus rears up to defend her young from an Allosaurus. How does the huge skeleton of Barosaurus—whose name means “heavy reptile”—stay up? The Barosaurus is built from casts of real fossil bones, while the originals are housed in the Museum’s collections. Real fossil bones would be too heavy to support this way.

Gigantic Skull of Prehistoric Sea Monster Found on England’s ‘Jurassic Coast’
The remarkably well-preserved skull of a gigantic pliosaur, a prehistoric sea monster, has been discovered on a beach in the county of Dorset in southern England, and it could reveal secrets about these awe-inspiring creatures.
Pliosaurs dominated the oceans at a time when dinosaurs roamed the land. The unearthed fossil is about 150 million years old, almost 3 million years younger than any other pliosaur find. Researchers are analyzing the specimen to determine whether it could even be a species new to science.
Originally spotted in spring 2022, the fossil, along with its complicated excavation and ongoing scientific investigation, are now detailed in the upcoming BBC documentary “Attenborough and the Jurassic Sea Monster,” presented by legendary naturalist Sir David Attenborough, that will air February 14 on PBS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Such was the enormous size of the carnivorous marine reptile that the skull, excavated from a cliff along Dorset’s “Jurassic Coast,” is almost 2 meters (6.6 feet) long. In its fossilized form, the specimen weighs over half a metric ton. Pliosaurs species could grow to 15 meters (50 feet) in length, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica.
The fossil was buried deep in the cliff, about 11 meters (36 feet) above the ground and 15 meters (49 feet) down the cliff, local paleontologist Steve Etches, who helped uncover it, said in a video call.
Extracting it proved a perilous task, one fraught with danger as a crew raced against the clock during a window of good weather before summer storms closed in and the cliff eroded, possibly taking the rare and significant fossil with it.
Etches first learned of the fossil’s existence when his friend Philip Jacobs called him after coming across the pliosaur’s snout on the beach. Right from the start, they were “quite excited, because its jaws closed together which indicates (the fossil) is complete,” Etches said.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After using drones to map the cliff and identify the rest of the pliosaur’s precise position, Etches and his team embarked on a three-week operation, chiseling into the cliff while suspended in midair.
“It’s a miracle we got it out,” he said, “because we had one last day to get this thing out, which we did at 9:30 p.m.”
Etches took on the task of painstakingly restoring the skull. There was a time he found “very disillusioning” as the mud, and bone, had cracked, but “over the following days and weeks, it was a case of …, like a jigsaw, putting it all back. It took a long time but every bit of bone we got back in.”
It’s a “freak of nature” that this fossil remains in such good condition, Etches added. “It died in the right environment, there was a lot of sedimentation … so when it died and went down to the seafloor, it got buried quite quickly.”

Fearsome top predator of the seas
The nearly intact fossil illuminates the characteristics that made the pliosaur a truly fearsome predator, hunting prey such as the dolphinlike ichthyosaur. The apex predator with huge razor-sharp teeth used a variety of senses, including sensory pits still visible on its skull that may have allowed it to detect changes in water pressure, according to the documentary.
The pliosaur had a bite twice as powerful as a saltwater crocodile, which has the world’s most powerful jaws today, according to Emily Rayfield, a professor of paleobiology at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom who appeared in the documentary. The prehistoric marine predator would have been able to cut into a car, she said.
Andre Rowe, a postdoctoral research associate of paleobiology at the University of Bristol, added that “the animal would have been so massive that I think it would have been able to prey effectively on anything that was unfortunate enough to be in its space.”

tw: slight suicidal actions (but not really the batfam are wildly clueless to the actual context to danny's bullshit hes not suicidal--in this fic--he's dead get it RIGHT brucie)
Au where Batfam are entirely convinced that the new vigilante in Gotham, danny, has time travel powers because he can vanish away from their senses completely
This becomes a problem however when
Bruce searches for him because wants to save Jason. Danny can save Jason not in the--im a time traveler and i can bring him or you back from or to the past--but in the, I’m a ghost king and have domain over the dead haha
Batfam become really concerned watching Phantom fight because “if he has time travel powers why doesn’t he avoid getting hit every time he can” and get worried phantom is purposefully letting himself get hurt
Danny in all honesty is just vibin the entire time while the batfam is going crazy at every sliver of info they get about danny because like
okay hes a time traveler thats established they got over that
This guy whos somehow been able to stop and rehabilitate rouges (ghosts) in his town is 15??
he may be the kindest most self destructive kid they've ever met like who immediately agrees to help people who were trying to capture and interogate him because he 'thinks we are better than the last billionaire who did this' what the FUCK
Oh yeah and they find out as a bonus in the end that his normal unpowered form he is a teen with black hair and blue eyes (bruce no no dont do it dont--)
---
Bruce is losing his mind
Okay so at the start of this there’s an unknown vigilante (danny) that Batman tends to bump into. Except Batman isn’t sure what he is.
Every time they run into each other Batman can tell there should just be a person beside him but before he gets a glimpse and opens his eyes to empty fresh air.
A vigilante that can vanish before their very eyes?
What do the bats think about this?
They think this vigilante can control time and is doing that to sneak out of their gaze.
Now here’s where the funny part comes in
Bruce goes on a wild hunt to search for the vigilante with a plan. To make them turn back time so that he can save his son.
The problem with this?
Danny is not a time traveler most days–scratch that he's not one at all. He can save his son Jason though, in fact he wants to, it’s just he needs to figure out a way to do this whilst not blowing his cover that he is the goddamn ghost king.
So he pretends that he does have time powers and that he just… uh… needs a minute to figure them out… yeah that!
Cue Batfam getting progressively more worried about Danny because ‘if he could turn back time—why doesn’t he avoid those hits?’
They all kinda think Danny is like purposefully hurting himself so now Danny is forced to eat breakfast with them and sleep at their manor.  I mean he’s confused at why they always look so worried about something but he’ll make sure Batman’s son gets home soon! Plus the rich people temporary-living-situation without all the ‘I want to adopt you’ billionaire bullshit is pretty sweet!!
(somewhere in the ghost zone jason is tearing up laughing at the batfam as they struggle to not burst into flames trying to figure out danny-- like for christs sake they think the ghost king is an american doctor who and are trying to get him to spill where his tardis is)
