I'm not sure if most people really dig the whole 'bad reputation' thing. he's friends with the most terrifying twins in the entire campus, notably scammed a lot of people, can give wishes with an extreme price.

that's their own imagination but azul's actually very sweet and gets some overworked junior to do the work for him, usually jade since floyd just leaves if he's given the job. JUST so he can go fret over which tie to use for your unofficial date.

despite him annoyed and losing sleep 24/7 because of the tweels he still asks them which one to use, jade's opinion is most trustworthy since floyd picks the neon, vibrant ones. (don't question why he even owns it.)

I doubt he actually likes people though, anyone else than you? hard pass. he's a simp through and through but unlike idia who can't mask the mortification and disgust on his face even at the cost of his life, good thing that masks are one of the many things azul is good at.

- I feel like he would be conscious of how he looks and his height but doesn't act too worked up over it, so if his partner is hella tall then he probably won't be bothered much unless they tease him about it. However if his partner is both tall and physically strong then he'll be very impressed at their strength instead! Probably asking things like what's their training methods or things like how to improve your muscles, etc. - He probably thinks it's a bit troublesome that he gotta look up to you every time you two are chatting, but as long as there's no teasing at him then he won't pay attention to that much, he won't admit he's secretly jealous of your height though... Okay, he will be, just a little bit, but afterward he just thinks about how cool you are when you always appear a head taller than most people in school and how it's so easy to spot you among the crowd. He seriously wants to be cool like you! - Don't treat him like he's a small, frail boy who needs help every time, that's the top thing on the "Absolute no" list for Epel. Even when you have an advantage in height, so what? He won't let that be a thing for you to make fun of him! In fact, it just gets him even more fired up to work himself better so he can catch up to you quickly! He has a lot of room to grow and he definitely won't give up either. - He definitely boasts about how cool his partner is or how tall they are to others with a proud look on his face. - Despite being fairly short, I think Lilia never gets bothered in the slightest mainly because he can teleport or float in the air like a bat he is. So even if his partner is insanely tall, he can just float up to their eye level with ease and even use their shoulders for leaning support. (he's just being the silly he is yknow) - But he would be fairly impressed for sure with how tall you're as you easily stand out in the crowd with your head above others or how easily it is to spot you. He thinks it's cool how humans can be so tall but also so short, it's really fascinating for a fae like him! - He can easily take books from the highest shelf or reach out for that one apple hanging on the tree, but sometimes, this guy would start acting like the tease he is and ask you to get it for him. "But you can just float?" "Hoho, but I'm feeling like walking today though~" and just land on the ground so casually like the prankster he is... as you just sigh and get the thing he requested with ease while the fae chuckles in the background. - He loves surprises, so don't question it if he suddenly floats up and kisses you out of nowhere when you expect it the least. That look of pure shock on your face is just priceless for him, peace and quiet is not an option if you're Lilia's partner no matter how tall you're. He definitely lives long enough to seen and talk to people that are as tall or even taller than you, so he knows how to handle it perfectly or even startle them back. - He also loves messing around, so he'll just appears out of nowhere, his body upside down as you got so startled you nearly froze when your eyes meet each other, and he laughs, like a lot. He just loves it when he can throw you off with such remarks and randomness, just because you're a head taller doesn't mean he can't scare you~ - You can try and surprise him back, maybe when he was being a bit too absorbed into chatting with you about something and you lean in, face inches away from his as both of you just stare at each other for a good second before you lean away and ask him to continue. Believe it or not, Lilia was thrilled at that attempt he ended up laughing like an idiot for a good minute, oh silly you, do that again next time! He'll only end up fascinated by you even more if you act like that, so surprising yet so exciting~

- He's very conscious of his height and could easily get angry or irritated at the slight mention of it, so I think he would feel even more conscious if his partner is a head taller than him. He always wanted to be the cool, reliable type of boyfriend in his partner's eyes, but to think now they're the taller one, a head taller even... He is not bothered at all. Not at all! - But that doesn't stop him from wanting his partner to depend on him too, considering he's still an honor student and a housewarden, he'll try to look past the height difference between you two and act like a reliable boyfriend and offer to help you out whether with your study or other things. He knows having a tall height has an advantage like be able to reach for high shelves easily, and whenever you do so, he just tries to not get flustered over it and thanks you properly... Don't worry, he's just being a bit shy~ - He hopes that his partner, being insanely tall, doesn't make fun of his height or mention it too often. He'll try to let it slide if you bring it up in a way that doesn't sound irritating to him, he might easily get upset but he always tries his best to not get unreasonably angry at you, that's the last thing he wants after all. - Whenever you two sit next to each other and when he can easily reach your face better, he will take it as a chance to appear more "boyfriend-like" to you... not that he already isn't one, but sometimes he can't help but wish he could reach your face easier so he can kiss them or cup your face better. Occasionally, he would even lend his shoulder for you to lean on too, not only does he feel like he's doing a good job being your partner but also feels taller too somewhat... - He's probably the one that's the most unbothered in this list since he doesn't care for things like height or appearance in general, but he'll definitely be impressed at how tall his partner is and shows it outwardly, he never holds back when it comes to compliments! - Though I think he'll love having a tall partner too as he can ask them to help him reach high shelves or just be able to spot them so easily in the crowd is enough to make him happy! Just imagine a cheery and bright Kalim running towards you from miles away while waving at you with the way your head pops up in a crowd, that would definitely bring a smile to your face for sure!! - He also isn't too conscious of his height or think too much about it, he is pretty carefree overall so it won't be at the top of his head! However, due to your height difference it would be a bit troublesome when he wants to kiss you but he can't... so he came up with a solution to jump up for that! And don't underestimate him, he's good at jumping despite his short height! (As he bounces up the air and you just so happen to lean down, both of your heads collide... Jamil questioned why both of you got a bump with a worrying look but neither of you explained it truthfully which only raised his suspicion even further... Don't tell him okay?) - Piggyback ride? Piggyback ride! Because of your insanely tall height, you definitely can lift him up and he is excited to say the least! He loves being carried around! So whenever he can wrap his arms around you as you carry him and run around the campus, he'll have a really big, happy grin on his face. Either that or you two do a jump challenge of whoever can reach that tree branch better (even though you know it's a surefire win for you) and the winner gets a free coconut juice! Kalim definitely tried his best to win every time despite his short height, and even when he lost he never appeared sad and the total opposite instead, he just has so much fun being around someone cool like you! - He also loves carrying others too, and he would also do the same to you despite your insane height. Similar to Epel, although you keep telling him it's fine but how can you say no after he give you that cute grin full of sunshine... so you just so happen to say yes, and as enthusiastic as he is, he quickly swoops you up off the ground, see, he definitely can carry you with ease! ...And it doesn't last for long as you both fall over to the ground. He felt bad for dropping you like that and quickly apologize before giving you a big grin and a cheek kiss as an apology gift, so cheeky and adorable of him~

I THANK YOU FOR BRINGING ME BACK TO LIFE WITH THIS WONDERFUL QUESTION AND SIT BACK BECAUSE THIS IS GONNA BE LONG

sebek is just, wow. honestly, he's a really interesting character to me; most especially with his development since his debut in the game to what's currently happening in the main chapters. i can not fathom enough how much potential there is for sebek to just grow. and despite his strong mentality, loyalty, and perseverance, he's still young. i see his motivation to be so fruitful and raw.

but of course, everyone has their own flaws. sebek is a decisive man and has the tendency to be close-minded when it comes to certain opinions that revokes against anything when it comes to malleus. however, again, he can still grow. most especially when he really tried his best to go against malleus' ideals when he overblotted. otherwise, when it comes to objective topics, sebek is honestly a group member i'd like to have in a group project. he's just really, astoundingly, reliable. just a bit more work on communication and teamwork and he's ideal. and he's someone i don't want to go against with when it comes to debates KSJUDHIUHFJUIOSFH i feel like i'd CRY

in his personal story, i can tell he's good at listening when need it be. he's also a really good observer. he's the epitome of the guard he wanted to be but he can be blind and deaf at times. it's just something that makes him inherently humane of him. he brings out more of being a human than fae. he's also straightforward and honest, i find that a bonus. you can't catch this man lying at ALL.

i can also tell he's been raised really well by his parents and was really loved – and probably had a childhood he deserved. his parents would provide as much childhood they can give to him and his siblings. all his stories about his childhood just warms my heart so imagine how broken i was when he faced baul in that dream 😭😭😭. you can't tell me otherwise that he takes pride in his family.

speaking of which, i just believe that at first it would be awkward and hard to try and befriend sebek but as time goes by, i feel like he'd just keep someone in his life and treasure them wholeheartedly. like, quality time with him would be so sweet. quiet reading in the bedroom or library with him while exchanging opinions??? 100% it's beautiful. exchanging lil notes in class? PLEASE. he definitely needs someone to hold him down on the floor and make him LISTEN and GROUNDED – and silver and lilia are there and it's just UGH

when he sees potential in someone he really wants them to BRING IT OUT. MANIFEST AND CRAFT that talent or strength into something NEW. make it BLOOM. like if you want to take up something and you're hesitant and shy?? ma'am sir this man would MAKE you do it you won't have a choice and eventually make you see that you're BORN for it.

another thing is his denial for his emotions. it softens my heart when i see him cry and express himself because i know sebek is feeling something deep down about himself that he doesn't want to bring out. his fears and tribulations are there to sense. he won't speak it out – he most definitely won't even acknowledge it unless he needs to. when he cried about baul??? i wanted to just give him a hug. he really wants to craft himself into this perfect go-by-the-book knight and i know that someday it will eventually take a toll on him. stay strong sebek, you're always a step closer. but i think he needs to really take it slowly and acknowledge his emotions and weaknesses more.

i have SO MUCH more to say about sebek you have no idea. i may not yell so much about him but he's just so important to me as the other casts. he's this friend that i really want to see grow and i know he'd make people proud. he needs more recognition,,, honestly.

That song, "Just A Man" broke my heart so much. I saw this animatic where the baby just looked so innocent and then frightened and it breaks my heart just remembering the little one's face.

You are so right! The song has so much potential for the Knight of Dawn in a different/reverse perspective.

Ahhhh I'm crying, Dawn is constantly fighting. A war he doesn't even want to be a part of, but has no choice because of Henrik. He does it for his wife and his child.

But then, this is where events take a turn. Enough is enough, he won't take the life a child. A life yet lived fully. This is when he turns and plots against Henrik, but of course, he always makes sure his family safety is priority and he let's the Fae know that.

(I just can't take the image of him dropping the egg either 😭😭)

Dawn is such a tragic character, everything about him screams angst 😭😭, but that's why we creators are here 🦋 anonie, we have the power to make him happy. 💕🥰

Whenever this scenario is mentioned, I always think about Lilidia first, since Lilia is kind of a nerd himself + wouldn’t mind dressing up. In fact I did draw this once, if you consider a maid outfit a cosplay… we might revisit the theme of cosplay in Idia smut sometime, it’s a very fun one.

Then again, we did have a comic about Sebek bragging about being the one to breed his liege, so maybe he doesn’t even need to be in the heat of the moment to think about this type of thing. It’ll definitely get him excited in like 2 seconds though lol

Yeah, we’ve heard about the game! At some point it became impossible to avoid, and while we haven’t played or watched it, the discourse around it is fascinating and very telling. We are just very happy in general that the game exists, and not necessarily because of incest, but because it’s always cool to see games with darker and more problematic themes getting popularity and recognition, especially if this is the game where the main characters are kind of shitty people lol And the artstyle is cute, I agree! Not the conviction of a judge, or a king, or a soldier. Their conviction is of tea-time weather observations, of the kiss of tide at sea, the fact that is sunrise, and the moon that trails after. Something simple, and mundane, and unfailingly honest. And above all else, above murmured insults, and booming jabs at rounded ears and smaller magics, the Zigvolts believe, know, that their son loves them.

It follows in him placing away the mugs after washing, and knocking on the dentistry's door with that huff of his. In the glances behind an unsheathed sword, eyes searching for a familiar truth.

And the Zigvolts smile, for he knows.

And Sebek turns his face, embarrassed.

Dude. Sebek as a character????? MUWAH. His inner conflict of human vs fae is so complex and compelling. That type of conflict, obviously, doesn't arise just out of nowhere. The Valley of Thorn's general society obviously had a heavy impact, and I believe that Sebek's grandfather was a primary influence as well. So Sebek's parents, OOUGH. It really gets you wondering about how they feel, especially his human father. But? His parents? Are just so? Loving? They truly, and deeply love their son, and I think that they know Sebek loves them back, even if he himself doesn't really understand his own feelings. This manifests in a variety of ways, but a definite drawback is that because they know that their son loves them, they don't really adress the antagonism he holds towards human kind? Towards himself. I think that the Zigvolts believe that Sebek will come to understand with time, and that their love for each other is enough. Especially with fae culture, their lives long and full, learning and growth seems to be something that also develops over time. (Mr. Plover is someone who seems to adopt fae culture, and wonderfully open minded, so I think he adopts this kind of attitude towards Sebek as well?) There is no rush to correct Sebek, and maybe with fae culture, a lesson learned by oneself over time is more valuable than a one forced upon them. If that makes any sense. So his parents belief in his love and intelligence and future, almost feeds into this conflict? But it's... fine bc he's half fae? Obviously not fine, but, ya know? Anyways😂😂😂 I love their family so much😭😭😭 if you made it here, thanks for listening to my ramble! :) Especially with the Silver stuff coming up WHICH I AM STOKED FOR I AM EATING YOUR WRITING I AM CRYING😭😭😭

and just the overwhelming theme that the quality their family prides themselves most on is their conviction WHICH IS SO TRUE OF SEBEK AS A CHARACTER AND WHAT WE KNOW OF HIS MOTHER AND FATHER!!! conviction to their love, conviction in his liege i literally am obsessed with the mundane little observations that when placed in this context ARE SO INSPIRING AND MEANINGFUL!!!

i really hope we get to understand more about sebek's life and past, especially in ch7 if we get the backstory on lilia and baul (sebek's grandfather) and how he views humankind. and if not there, then i really hope we get a briar valley event where we can see the zigvolts in all their glory!! the dentist office, sebek's siblings, the home where he grew up!!! but you raise such a good point about how their belief that he will mature with time could also be a hinderance since they're not stepping in to facilitate his personal growth BUT I HAVE FAITH IN SEBEK!!! from what we've seen so far in ch7, he's had his foundations shaken considerably, and how he comes out of this is going to be a huge testament to his love for diasomnia

Writeblr Battle Royale, Lyra - Round 1

Oh Anuli 😭

Anyway.

Joined the @writeblrbattleroyale event and entered Lyra as one of my OCs to fight to the death!! And, well...I mean Lyra would do it except she's got an impulse to help/defend the ones that she can. So when she spotted @anulithots 's Anuli in the arena she just...really...couldn't...hurt fae. She wants to pick fae up and cuddle her until things are okay. But she's been in something similar enough to this that she knows how this goes and doesn't want fae to have to go through this again and again and again...so she makes a choice.

Static. 

The story restarted with static. 

As it did. Every time. Every cycle. Leading to nothing but this ending and this ending alone. Some false lead that I may have won. That I might have written a happy ending. Or an unhappy one in this case… only to be blinded to a plot twist of my own making. 

How utterly ironic. The villain messed with faer own motives. Antagonistic, even to faerself. All I needed was an evil laugh. My realization arc would be complete. 

…As soon as my weight stopped tipping from side to side and I figured out if those spark-rimmed dark spots were real or not, and the static stopped consuming me whole. 

Plot holes and darling murders. 

I must have fallen. The tether finally snapped. Into the static I went. Into a happy ending, a release, a freedom I didn’t deserve…. How could it be a sequel? No one likes sequels. It was already the end after all. The villain got faer unhappy ending. It should’ve stayed that way. 

Sequels were narratively impossible. The story was over, all loose threads, resolved, one can’t write a continuation to something forgotten and finished. The only way to do it was a narrative spiral and even that… It hurts. My leaves smarted as the black spots danced. 

The captured star broke from its container, shattering the shards in an explosion of light. The shards stuck in odd angles, flesh punctured, beads of blood tricking, pooling in my stomach. It roared, setting my skin on fire. The static swirled in my head, throbbing, throbbing… 

When did my heartbeat get so loud? Was I breathing? Yes, weird and hollow, but there. Why was it so loud? 

Another one of those spooky antagonist paradoxes. 

…. Oh that was ridiculous. 

….

….

My vision blurred in and out. Didn’t I get rid of- I swayed, back and forth. Thoughts fizzled and popped. Not again. I rubbed my head in circular motions. Feelings exist. Feelings exist. Do not float into oblivion. Why did my skin burn? Was it that hot? Was there even sun? It hurts. Shouldn’t it stop hurting after…. a while? 

Oh no. No no no nonono.

Lyra shook off her disorientation as the white began to fade from around her into the space beyond, revealing an arena. The walls rose up around them in stone, the dirt scuffling at her feet as her ears began to swivel and she took in the sights and sounds around her. She flinched when a box up high began speaking, flattening her ears to her head as she took a moment to adjust to the noise and the crackle of static.

A gamemaster? Contenders?! Opponents!?

“No!!” she yelled, wings snapping out to either side. “Not again!!”

She hadn’t even been playing with the scroll this time. She’d given up the search for him, had started trying to fight the darkness back home without his aid. She didn’t have time for this, she didn’t want to be stuck in another death-match tournament with an onlooker that watched bloodshed for amusement.

She glanced around. Her bow. Where was her bow!?!

She caught sight of the one that was supposed to be her opponent, Lyra spreading out her wings and readying herself to fly. To use magic if she needed, damn the consequences. She needed to get back home as fast as possible.

But the one across from her…they seemed…like they shouldn’t be here. They seemed lost, confused.

Lyra lowered her wings. Glanced around at the arena. Looked back at the one opposite her.

“...Are you okay?” She called out. She took the risk of approaching. They didn’t answer at first. So she tried again. “You look so frightened,” she said softly. “Do you…have wings?” She flexed her own a little, enough to make them move. “Can you fly? Maybe we can fly out of here together?”

The words- for they were words after all… maybe… probably - floated over my head and to some far off place.

The other fairy (?) flexed their wings and the static ricocheted.

Oh 

Oh no no no, absolutely not. Forget narrative symmetry and thoughts stop burning up and form coherent words….

Battle of the fates. 

Kill the fallen fairy. 

And the other one, some other high protector, took that archetype in every shape, way, and form. 

They should kill the fallen fairy, before they realize its true nature. An irredeemable mushed up mess of antagonistic traits that would inevitably mess this up. It was only a matter of some sick comedic timing. Sequels were ridiculous like that. I growled. It made my roots curl into themselves, static sparking. And like a sequel, the story was set on reusing the same plot structure, beginning, progressing, and ending the same way.

Kamari should’ve realized sooner. 

They should’ve realized sooner. 

Anuli the antagonist couldn’t fly. Anuli the antagonist couldn’t say things right or find faer tree or function whatsoever or get faer thoughts off faer ridiculous stories for two seconds for simple, simple things that Anuli the antagonist just couldn’t do. No matter how hard fae tried. Fae wasn’t trying to be an antagonist… at least, I hoped that was the case. But whenever I tried to fix things, it never worked. I was just… the antagonist. 

They would waste valuable time trying to further the narrative of the opposition. It would cost them. It would cost them their happy ending. 

I really needed to perfect that evil laugh. 

The ground swayed. The static roared.  I couldn’t even be an antagonist. It was so hot. So loud. 

A small, selfish thought imagined the other - the protagonist, the ‘opponent’ - giving me a hug and singing and a lullabye, making the Place of Tethers retreat. I hissed at it. Never again. I would not repeat the same story twice. 

I gripped my antenna and yanked until my muzzle stung. 

“Oh, you poor thing,” Lyra muttered, backing away. Put her hands up. “I’m not going to hurt you. I promise.” She kept her voice soft. She glanced around. It sounded like this was a contest. Like there was another death match just beyond this one, and another and another and another. She glanced back at her ‘opponent’ and let out a sigh. “You don’t deserve this. You don’t deserve…to have anyone hurt you, Kelouoyba. I’m so sorry for the pain you’ve gone through.”

She stood and backed away. “I’m going to make sure you don’t have to put up with this.” She glanced up at the white expanse above them. Raised her voice so she could be heard by the one no doubt watching. “And once I’m done here I’m coming for you, game master!!”

She would not go through this again. Would not watch as ones like this one were forced into fighting for their lives. Not ones that had clearly been through a lot. That had been through enough. That deserved peace.

Her wings stretched to either side and she took off into the air, keeping herself level with the top of the wall, just under where the wall turned into what looked like some sort of stands or seating of some kind. She turned her attention to the other one, began humming as she concentrated. Summoned her core magic from deep within. Reached out with hands and magic to connect with the earth directly under her opponent. Felt it as her magic connected to this strange ground, pushing with all her might to create a hole directly under them.

Mistake. 

Mistake. 

Mistake. 

I deserve it. I ruined the same story multiple times. I’m a villain. An antagonist. 

It would be so much worse. I could either let the tether tighten, or fall to everything different. Both were wrong - false leads to the same ending.

And so the story continues. The villain ruins the stories of the ones who gave the antagonist faer own. 

“Akonh Kelouoyba!!” Use your wings, little one. She shouted it as angrily as she could, made it sound like a threat to help sell the idea that she was attacking using her magic, knowing that they likely couldn’t understand her even as her voice rattled in her throat, the cost of her magic.

The Protector shouted. Shouted. Angry. Or wanted something. Something that I couldn’t give. I winced. I did it again. Couldn’t get out of my own thoughts for two minutes to prevent this. Perhaps I was meant to play this role for eternity. Over and over and over and - 

The Protector… was angry, during a battle of the fates. 

Fae realized. 

The story’s over. 

Villain defeated.  

The static roared and the world collapsed to darkness. 

Once they fell she slammed the top of the earth shut with a loud hammering sound and landed on the very spot. She knew she had left an opening big enough and deep enough for them to be safe, so long as they were able to flutter down and reach the bottom. She placed her hand on the spot they had just been and whispered, “Rmhte, Kelouoyba.” Be safe, little one.

Yeah. She's gonna try and fight her way up to the game master so she can kill him. She doesn't like being forced in these types of games and even more so now after Anuli. It'll be interesting to see how far she gets.

Also to see if she meets a certain OC that'll put her on edge and probably cause her to have a meltdown.

"Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries"

It's been a few days, but I'm still reading regularly, just in smaller chunks.

I love this book more and more with each passing page. It's got a relatively simple plot, but the execution, the style, the characters and the gorgeous atmosphere really make it stand out.

So... here's some notes:

They found the murderous and ominous tree under which the murderous faerie king is buried! So exciting! And Emily hops off to take some samples literally immediately, with no protections whatsoever! That little rascal, her! Surely this she will bear no consequences whatsoever.

I must say, I'm a little disappointed Wendell's identity is not treated as something really daunting as it should be. Yes, they live in a fantasy historical world and encounter fae on the daily. Yes, Emily doesn't really have extreme reactions like some other book characters. Yes, she had been suspicious that he was fae for a very long time. But I still think there's something missing in this whole revelation. It's played off as something... fa(e)irly normal (que: Laugh at my stupid pun here), which I find a little unrealistic. Fight me on this, I don't care.

Wendell's backstory is a little too tragic MC past™️, but I will overlook this fact because he started crying. 🥺😭

Ok, I loved the bit where he tricks Emily with the coat.

I'm not a big fan of a friends to lovers romance. They usually disappoint me with a very bland friendship that has no soul and is only set up in order to evolve into a romance. It's boring and lazy writing, and I tend to avoid it. But I really, really like the chemistry between Emily and Wendell. I like how their personalities clash, but are still similar enough to work-out. It's got a certain softness to it that really gets to me.

I'm a little disappointed (again) Emily decided to side with Wendell on trying to deceive the locals. Idk, feels out of character for her. Sure, she's obviously changing as a characters (in this house we stan character growth, no matter in which direction), but this seems... Off. She has just established a better relationship with everyone. She even confessed she cares about the people in the village, even though she didn't plan for it to happen. And now she's willing to risk it all for her work? I know it's a plot device. I know Fawcett used this to drive the story forward, but I don't know... It didn't feel right.

Can't a girl poop in peace? Damn.

I know I had some minor disagreements with some parts of the story, but they don't downgrade my reading experience. I'm having a lot of fun with this book!

ALSO have reader and mor interacted with each other at all throughout her life???? i'm assuming they're sisters through keir (probably half sisters? idk if this has been addressed in the fic it's been a while since i've read it). i ask bc i can't imagine mor or even rhys would've just let her grow up in hewn city alone knowing how it was like for mor. so i've been assuming that keir probably hid reader or kept her sheltered to some degree before she reached a certain age or started to become useful to him with her powers, and at that point it was kinda too late for the ic to intervene or smth. now i'm wondering if reader harbours any resentment or emotion towards mor and/or rhysand, or if it's more of a disinterest like "that's someone that's apparently related to me but i don't rlly know them so 🤷‍♀️". i think there was a moment in part 1 that indicates that reader is scared of rhy's powers and him potentially wiping her memory during the i'll-give-you-the-veritas-if-you-touch-me deal thing so maybe there isn't any familiarity between them beyond that he's high lord of the night court 🤔

Honestly with please… reader is supposed to be in a pretty bad situation but not overly concerned about it? Sure it would be nice to leave, but she doesn’t imagine that’s possible so is content to set her mind to use by guarding Kier’s trove of treasures. Then with the strict court rules (particularly for her, being kier’s offspring and also female) she point blank doesn’t have an interest in finding someone else since that’s not what she’s been raised on? So when Az comes along, sure he’s beautiful, but he’s the High Lord’s Spymaster first and foremost, probably quite a few levels above her in terms of hierarchy, but on fairly similar footing hence the wariness but not blatant disinterest on her part.

I think reader craves a companion of sorts and Az is currently the closest she has to that ideal. Though I agree I can’t see them forming a friendship in the traditional sense? Maybe they might grow to that in a century or two, but like you said with the vast difference in experience I imagine it would take a while for them to reach a similar level of understanding :)

Stop because I read through the last three parts last night to help with writing part 4 and I can’t pull their dynamic to mind at the moment 🤦

I think in part 3 though there is that scene where he looks after her a little because he sees some shards of himself in her from the angle of being made to inflict torture on someone? But after having hurt a person together, I think reader might become a little shaky around him specifically, so we’ll see what happens in part 4 🫣🧡💛

So we haven’t really gotten to see much of that (mainly because I hadn’t intended this to be so plot-heavy but shh) but I suppose it’s more indifference to the things that happen around her rather than ignorance/her being unaware of them. I’d say it’s why she’s more blasé when Az first finds her in part one, because she knows he can’t just kill her despite having the ability to, if that makes sense?

This is probably something I’ll be touching more on in part 4 and that was kind of alluded to in part 3, but with her powers of truth she’s able to get a general sense of a person. Obviously she’s still pretty young compared to other fae and has grown up in the Hewn city, so the types of people she’s encountered have been mostly the same which makes things a little difficult. However, she didn’t get the impression Azriel particularly wanted to kill her, or that he was particularly untrustworthy which is why she was so ready to make a deal with him. (That and also girlie just needed to feel something, desperately)

Compared to how he can be with his family, no he wasn’t kind to her, but he wasn’t cruel to her—which, having grown up in the Hewn City, is as good as wrapping her up in a warm blanket and setting a tray full of delicious food on her lap. Although I think he’s gotten a little more gentle with her in part 3? Maybe? 😶

I’d have to agree with you that Kier would have kept her hidden otherwise I feel like Mor would have been right there from day one to make sure her younger sister wouldn’t have to endure what she did.

With whether or not reader harnesses any resentment toward the IC, I’d say it’s a bit of a mix? She’d scared of Rhys, as literally anyone in the Hewn City should be, considering what sort of person he becomes, but beyond fear and maybe a twinge of admiration for Mor I don’t think she has particularly strong feelings toward them :/

The Cruel Prince

This book ruined me for fae books and I'm not even sorry. It also doesn't help that this was my first literary introduction to fae (Midsummer Night's Dream doesn't count). The prose is so lyrical and beautiful and had me feeling as if I were utterly lost in Elfhame / an otherworldly, fae-filled realm. (Also funnily enough, I read this series while I was down with COVID, so maybe the delirium added to the otherworldliness of it.)

What I Ioved about fae was that they couldn't lie. And Cruel Prince really does work that in parts - seeing Cardan use wit and cleverness and lies by omission to sidestep that "weakness" in him. Even until now I haven't quite seen a book execute that to the degree Cardan displayed. Books like ACoTaR just eliminate the inability to lie in their fae, which is a huge step down, in my opinion.

I also adored Jude, which is very rare for me because most heroines in fiction annoy me or they're either too bland for me to care. But Jude - JUDE - she was hardworking, ambitious and determined without being a special, overly snarky Mary Sue about it. She actually showed her smarts, imo best demonstrated when she outwitted Balekin (that exchange with the poison made me SCREAM).

Speaking of poison - she poisoned herself everyday, trying to build an immunity to poison. It was painful, and I cringed for her, but she did it. And throughout it all, she never had any special ability until the third book, which barely showcased said ability. Jude got through the trials and tribulations by being clever and cunning and human. She wasn't half-fae; she wasn't given special gifts in combat like Feyre - she was just herself in a world of immortals, and she worked her ass off to compensate for it.

But what makes the book for me isn't really Jude, though she's a big part of it. It's Cardan - whom I fell so deeply for; cruel, pathetic drunkard Cardan.

Was he a little too weak for my tastes? Yes. Was he a little too drunk, to the point that I found it repulsive at times? Yes. Was he kind of sucky in bed? Yes, though that's more because it's YA and they weren't going into detail about the spice.

And yet the way he spoke - how he could wax poetic and make it sound like a dagger or a kiss - OH MY GOSH. I also just love a boy who was able to be socially adept when he needed to, and manipulate people to his advantage. I loved how he had to teach Jude at the end of the first book to win allies over, and how he once (very exasperatedly, might I add) told her that murder (brute force / violence) wasn't the answer to everything.

I loved how cruel he was at the start and how he slowly became kinder, more trusting, more willing to love himself and accept that he loved Jude. And if there is one trope I hate in books, it's trauma-bonding, but there wasn't that. Jude's past was nowhere as wretched as his, and they never once felt like (... for lack of a better term) edge-lords pretending they were more special than the world because of their childhood histories. Cardan slowly came into his own without needing Jude to "fix" him.

I don't often feel my heart beat for male leads in books anymore, not for a long while. I've become very jaded, or something. I don't know. But I did for Cardan.

That's not to say this series is perfect. I have my gripes with it. The last book was meh and too short and could have done with more Cardan instead of him as a snake. I think there was a lot of potential wasted with that book. The first and the second are much, much better, though I still reread the third the most because they were far more certain in their love then. Also I do wish Jude was a little weaker just to seem more human, and Cardan a bit stronger.

I'm still mad at this series because it put me in book slump for a good bit. I couldn't get over it. It wasn't until some time later that I finally managed to start reading and enjoying books again. Even until today, I haven't read any books that portray fae as wonderfully as Holly Black did, and that is a problem because fae are everywhere, which makes my Cruel Prince hangover even worse.

Also, Holly Black can write her fucking ass off. She's one of the prettiest writers I've read. If there is one thing I hate, it's modern slang in a fantasy setting (to be honest, I just... despise modern slang in any setting... lol), but she nailed the prose for this book. It was so pretty and enchanting without it being too purple.

I need to get to Stolen Heir and I don't know why I haven't. I thought Oak was really cute in the Cruel Prince series, though I heard he becomes a real piece of work in the new book and I am very, very scared.

I feel like things have been NUTS in this fandom recently, and tbh I can’t be bothered to engage as much as I used to bc of everything else going on in my life. BUT I did see a post where an anti claimed that because Bryce and hunt “chose to be mates”, Elain will OBVIOUSLY choose Azriel. And that’s just “common sense”.

It tickled me, especially since I don’t think their Quinlar claim regarding choice is as valid as they believe it to be. But I did find it humorous that this is what they took from Quinlar to be proof or indication of E/riel. When Quinlar has all the mating code of SJM’s other mated pairs. But especially the two instances that mimic Gwynriel’s code from the Azriel bonus.

Like I’m sorry but op wrote this long ass post about Quinlar’s “choice” = Elriel but ignored the glowing within Bryce’s chest when Hunt first kissed her in CC & in their additional bonus which matches Azriel’s thoughts of Gwyn. That’s fucking hilarious.

How are things in your life? I'm hoping that if they've been stressful, you've had the chance to find ways to relax and unwind especially outside the fandom because this is definitely not the place for that 😂😂😂. I look forward to the day we have answers so things can settle by at least a few degrees. Do you have any fun summer trips planned or have you taken any so far? There are so many things off about the Quinlar = E/riel take. First, it's odd when they try to compare a "chosen" mating bond set in a modern world between a half fae / fallen angel (with unknown lineage) and use it as evidence of Elain breaking her fae mating bond and choosing Az instead. They aren't close to being the same thing. First, Quinlar didn't choose one another while sharing a powerful bond with another. Hunt previously loved Shahar and chose to be with her yet she still wasn't his mate (choice or not). He didn't walk away from a magical force with her only to eventually end up with Bryce. Also, we don't know if it was truly a choice between Quinlar because would the same things have happened had Hunt ever called Shahar his mate? Would their scents have merged and would Hunt have gone into a rage? Or were Hunt and Bryce always destined to be the only ones who could share in a mating bond together? Sure they could have dated other people and maybe been happy but we don't know if they would share mate coding with those people and been as happy and powerful as they are together. We don't know enough about the bonds in CC to know whether it was ever really a completely random choice between them or whether destiny played a part in their ending up together. But really, the main take away is that SJM could have just had Bryce and Hunt choose to be together as partners then left it at that but instead they STILL ended up as mates with mate coded language like you pointed out 😂 They are still the ONLY mates each has known. In the SJM world whether you are given a Cauldron blessed mate or a chosen mate a character still seems to end up with the only mate they've ever known. If that doesn't tell you that SJM prefers mates above all else then I'm not sure what will. Once mate is thrown into the equation, that's the ultimate for her. Even her poorly matched mating bond pairings still chose one another, i.e. Rhys's parents. It's not even apples to oranges at this point, it's like leafy sea dragons to apples 😂

My favorite genshin character? Hm.. Scaramouche and Tartaglia share the 1st place on my list🙌‼️ Honestly for me to like fictional characters I need to feel like some sort of kinship with them. It's like getting to know someone and slowly growing fond of them. Is that weird idk😭 Scaramouche I feel VERY comnected to him, like staring at him is staring at a mirror. I love his lore and how much potential he has. His story was AMAZING in every way. The redemption arc wasn't really a redemption arc, he just chose to be free and do whatever he wanted to after getting his memories back. His backstory I can understand and relate to A LOT but we dont have to go too deep into it. Childe/Tartaglia/Ajax (mf has so many fucking names) I think the reason I love him is because of his relationship with his siblings and how he is still more caring compared to other harbingers. He has a heart shortly. He loves his family and thats what I love about him.

You might've noticed how her story was short! THAT WAS ON PURPOSE!! You see Nami doesn't remember anything before she joined the fatui. Her oldest memory is waking up in her tent in a camp and having the feeling to need to go on patrol. She is a very succesful agent in the Fatui. Having worked under 2 harbingers. Ajax and Capitano. She never questioned it. She felt like it was her whole purpose. But if WE dig into her story she was taken by the fatui as a child. Nami is an Elf, having powerful magic and a long life. Her family was indebt to the Fatui. They said they were willing to do anything as they wanted to protect their precious child. Well, they in Nami's mother. Her father didn't care about her as much. The Fatui suggested they gave up Nami as they could train her at an early age and make her into a killing machine. Her parents would fight every night and day, arguing about the situation. Nami felt horrible. She hated how she was the reason her parents didn't get along. So one night she ran away from home to join the fatui herself. She started strict training at the age of 9. Was involved in Dottore's many experiments. And when the harbinger decided she was strong enough. He brainwashed her. She was turned into some kind of puppet. Following orders left and right without complaint.

A lil baby goat fae in diasomnia. Or more formally Aasha Kurayami. Aasha comes from a rich family. They grew up as a very stoic child surronded with narcissists. Basically a family who expected a pretty perfect girl. They got the pretty perfect part but the girl part? Nah we are going QUEER. Straight hair, straight A's, straight forward. Straight girl. LITTLE MISS PERFECTTT THAAAAATSSSS AASHAAAA‼️ ehem but ye! They were originally supposed to go to RSA but they admired NRC so much even as a child that they begged their parents to go. When Aasha joined NRC, they werent expecting to make any friends. A few students were interested in their apperance as goat fae's are very rare. One of them being Cater. Aasha was still very stoic and distant with anyone and everyone so their first interactions with people were awkward and stiff. But as time went by they got more comfortable with others. They felt weird. Sometimes a smile would creep its way up to their lips! Or a little giggle. They were getting shyer by day. They felt weird and insecure aswell. Did they look normal while smiling? Or do their teeth look weird? But with more time they were fully comfortable with everyone. They felt at peace. They felt loved. And then they lived happily ever after-

@tbzloonar although xan is a little bit crazy (i'm being nice here) i feel like i would definitely trust him to drive. i feel like he's talkative but not too much (because they're driving, but also because this reflects their personality irl) and i feel like they'd be confident enough to know where they're going. they probably also have the gps going 24/7; he's probably super afraid of getting lost haha (and also because i see him as the dad of any group).

@jangwonie i feel like fae would definitely be a cuddler! maybe a little bit quiet on her phone, popping in at times throughout the conversation whenever she feels its necessary to, i feel like she'd always have her head on the shoulder of the person next to her or an arm around theirs. sometimes it's just for comfort, other times its for a comfortable sleeping position 😊

@sungie drew is literally one of the funniest people i've met on this app. it doesn't matter who starts conversations, but i feel like drew is definitely the one to keep them going. their laughs would definitely be a highlight of the car ride and they'd definitely be the whole mood maker of the group.

@gfksn i feel like mel would definitely be the mom of the group, even if it isn't always prominent. which is why i would trust him to always bring food! making sure everyone is fed is a key mom thing, but also food is very important in general and i feel like mel would be a snacker.

@seolves would definitely stop the car to take pictures. doesn't necessarily have to be of the people, but rather, the scenery and stuff to see itself. i feel like she has such a calming presence and photography is what came to mind at first (i have no idea if you're into photography irl)

i've been trying for the past 20 min to think of someone who is passed out cold the entire time and the answer is me. i have motion sickness and the only way to combat that is sleeping 😭 i really do love scenery and sightseeing but i would rather not be sick 🤗

i think the fact that cardan annotated one of his books for school is not talked about enough. hes such a bookworm and i love it so much

of course, everyone is welcome to envision Cardan howsoever they please. and i think himbo!Cardan can certainly be a fun play on his character. it's all for the bantz, and i'm not mad at that.

but personally, i see Cardan as exceptionally intellectual. so intellectual, in fact, that it's really most of why he's so intimidating.

because here's the thing: he doesn't have much of a physical intimidation factor. he can't wield a sword or weapon of any kind. he hasn't learned to fight, not in the proper sense at least. the most he can do is like... flip a coin over his knuckles, steal the ring off your finger without you noticing, and demolish you in a fashion competition.

and i guess he can put you in a chokehold if you're rude to his queen lmfao.

he also could use magic to intimidate, if he wanted to. he could ensorcel mortals to get what he wanted, if he wanted to. but most of what we've seen of him using magic of any kind is to protect Jude, not scare/harm people.

i think the fact that Cardan has these magical capabilities, chooses not to use them, and still manages to get what he wants, is a very insidious kind of terrifying.

more often than not, words and knowledge are his weapons. he uses powers of observation and cleverness to his advantage. he notices things, and he's very clever about what he notices. he knows precisely how and when to press people's buttons, he has an acute social awareness, and that makes him potentially very dangerous (depending on which side of his graces you lie). especially in a world like Faerie where the great majority of people are socially inept.

just because he is in love in TWK and couldn't see that exiling Jude was not, in fact, a clever riddle and would, in fact, backfire miserably, doesn't mean he's not smart.

rather, this is what makes him so interesting! he's intelligent but not in the cold, insensitive sort of way we often see when a character is crowned with the "intelligent" trope. he clearly still has feelings and a wide breadth of emotion, and that may cause him to fuck up sometimes, but it doesn't cancel out his intelligence.

he's just not always particularly smart when it comes to Jude. but how can we fault him for that? we're all fools in love.
