Where Love Rests
The Nublar Six visit Italy again two years later. Yaz decides it's the perfect place to propose to her girlfriend.
Two quick notes:
1. I still kind of want to name these chapters but haven't been able to come up with names I like and didn't want that to hold me back from posting, so I may come back and edit in chapter titles later.
2. I can't really decide what I think Brooklynn's romantic situation will look like by the end of the series, so I'm leaving it up to reader interpretation whether she's with Darius, Kenji, or single.
Chapter One: A Thought in The Dark
It was nice to be back in Italy under better circumstances.
For one thing, the Camp Fam was here by choice this time. Rather than crashlanding into the freezing environment on the heels of a devastating revelation, they'd been planning this trip for months, just for fun. Just to see Gia and Nonna, as none of them save for Ben had in two years, and do something exciting as a group.
They'd all been making the effort to do that more these past couple years. See each other more often, share more positive experiences rather than just near-death ones. Though it had taken some time to fully stabilize the rocked foundations of their group after the Brooklynn/Broker/Biosyn incident, they were all finally back in a good place, and none of them were keen on starting to drift again.
They took their weekly check-ins more seriously than they ever had. Looked for meet-up opportunities whenever they could. Had annual New Years parties at Darius's cabin and summer barbecues at Sammy and Yaz's ranch. Planned group events as frequently as finances and schedules would allow, whether it was meeting up for someone's birthday or a genuine vacation such as this.
It struck Yaz long before arrival that none of them had really gotten to enjoy Italy the first time. Brooklynn hadn't even been there, and the rest of the group had been dealing with the fallout of exactly that. This time, the circumstances were much more conducive to having a good time.
The plane ride went smoothly enough that Yaz could spend most of it dozing on Sammy's shoulder. Upon landing, they were greeted by a beautiful, mild summer day and Gia waiting to ambush them all with tight hugs before driving them back to her house.
There, they were given approximately sixty seconds to set their things down, at which point Nonna immediately began trying to feed them. She'd made enough risotto for a small army, and it became quickly apparent that no one was getting away from the table without having thirds.
After lunch, they were able to settle down in the living room for a while, sleepy and somewhat jet lagged. They chatted quietly amongst themselves and with Gia, who was far more animated, for about an hour before Kenji fished a deck of Uno cards out of his bag. Amidst all the arguing about which house rules improved the game and which were unbearably annoying, they managed to play twice in two hours.
By then, they were all finally awake enough to move their bags out of the living room and into the places they would be sleeping for next week and a half. Ben, Darius, and Kenji would occupy the guest room/office as they had the first time; no hassle there. For easier distribution of space, Gia had decided to share Nonna's room for the duration of the visit so that the other girls could stay in hers.
They would set up a sleeping pad for Brooklynn later, but presently, the three of them only ducked inside momentarily to drop their things near the bed Yaz and Sammy would be sharing. Yaz lingered near it a bit longer than the other two, hyperaware that the last time she'd been in this room, sitting on this bed, she and Sammy had been having the most consequential fight of their entire relationship.
Things had worked out quickly enough, but she couldn't help remembering how she'd been standing a mere two feet away from where she was now when she'd called Sammy a coward. Even now, she recalled their exact positions when Sammy had called things off between them, however briefly. For a few seconds, it completely soured Yaz's mood, and she began to weigh the pros and cons of asking to sleep on the couch instead.
"Yaz?" Then, Sammy called out to her from the doorway. Brooklynn had already left the room, and she was just waiting on Yaz to do the same. "You okay, hon?"
The heaviness that had tried to settle over her began to fade. However awful it had been to experience, that ordeal was long over. They'd patched things up years ago, and Sammy once again looked at Yaz with all the tenderness and affection in the world.
"Yeah," Yaz replied, walking over so that Sammy's outstretched arm could wrap around her back.
"Still tired?" Sammy guessed with a little smile. "I can leave you be if you want to take a nap."
"I'm good." Yaz pressed herself gently into Sammy's side. For the sake of honesty, she added, "just got in my head about something for a second. Nothing serious."
Sammy's brow furrowed slightly. "You'll tell me if it keeps bothering you?"
"Of course." That was their rule now. Neither of them ever had to talk, but there was a mutual expectation that they should if a troublesome thought kept coming back. This, among other things, had been extremely helpful in their efforts to strengthen their relationship.
Yaz grinned as Sammy kissed her lightly on the forehead, and the two of them headed back out to the living room with the others.
For the rest of the evening, things were pretty relaxed. The fun vacation experiences would begin tomorrow, but for now, everyone was too tired to do much more than show Gia all the photos of grown-up Smoothie they'd accumulated and eat what they could of the frankly obscene batch of pasta Nonna gave them for dinner.
They didn't manage to stay up very late after that. Before long, Yaz was tucked under Sammy's arm in a bed that was just slightly too small for there to be any space between them, with Brooklynn snoring softly on the floor a few feet away. Sammy and Brooklynn had both conked out quickly, but Yaz, now alone with her thoughts, was still awake.
It wasn't quite as bad as the first time, but she still couldn't help thinking about it. Everything she regretted from their previous visit, as well as the year before. Every mistake she'd made that had almost cost her the most important thing in her life.
Though, in a way, she supposed that terrible night had ultimately helped them fix things. Unearthed buried feelings, revealed festering wounds, showed them in no uncertain terms what was at risk if they didn't start communicating honestly. As much as it hurt, it had allowed them to come back together with a new perspective. A realization that hiding their feelings to spare the other's only bred resentment, and that if they wanted to be on the same page, they had to be willing to listen rather than just trying to push and convince.
Their brief time apart, spent mulling over their missteps, had helped prepare them to approach things differently after their unexpected reunion in Biosyn Valley. Yaz had gone to Sammy, realizing how her lack of initiative had hurt them, but let her do most of the talking. Fully heard her out before explaining her side, not expecting to change how Sammy felt, but wanting them to thoroughly understand each other.
It had been enough, in the moment. Reaffirmed that for all their faults, they loved each other enough to try. They went through their ordeal at Biosyn as partners; a team determined to work.
When the time finally came to go home, they knew they still had work to do, and they had committed themselves to doing it properly. Yaz moved back home to Texas. Sammy agreed to attend therapy together. Though it had been a process, with setbacks and bad days like any other, they'd learned. After a few months, it was like they'd never been apart at all.
And now, things were more or less perfect between them. Their occasional arguments were minor. They were much better at airing grievances before things got worse than they needed to be. And perhaps most importantly, the distance between them had closed.
They woke up beside each other every morning and fell asleep in each other's arms every night. Talking was easy, and silence was comfortable. They were back to quiet mornings and date nights and horseback riding. Dancing around the kitchen while Sammy hummed a love song and their dinner burned behind them. Touching tenderly and amorously.
When things got heavy, they were there to lighten each other's burdens. When things were good, they each knew they had the perfect companion for whatever the day would bring.
Their connection was stronger than ever before, and frankly, Yaz had no idea what she would do without it. Being with Sammy was... everything. It was all she wanted, all the time. She couldn't imagine any future in which this wasn't her life. Sammy was her best constant. The one thing, above all else, that she knew she wanted to keep forever.
Forever. For the rest of their lives.
Yaz stared up at the ceiling, listening to Sammy's slow, soft breaths by her ear. They were so close she could feel Sammy's heartbeat.
It came to her very suddenly. A thought she'd had in passing a few times before but always put aside for later because she had known they weren't ready. Now, with things as good as they were, it seemed a perfect time to start thinking about it again.
She wanted to get married. Grow old together. Maybe have a kid or two at some point.
She took a breath, realizing she was starting to get ahead of herself. But... yeah. She wanted to get married.
Turning over to the degree that she could without disturbing Sammy, Yaz silently observed the sleeping face of her partner. For all the time it had been a fleeting thought, she couldn't get it out of her head now. This woman; her wife. Their future secured and celebrated.
Suddenly, she wanted nothing more than to make it happen.

the Nublar Six in the covid lockdown/s - headcanons
specifically masking/covid safety headcanons here
Darius:
tries to rawdog it by himself in his woods cabin but the self isolation makes him borderline insane so he moves back in from the woods cabin with his mother, Kenji and Brand within a week
his mother is a health worker, so she’s keeping very safe for her boys (Darius misses spending time with her but admires the s# out of her for working so hard)
does those neighbourhood claps for the health workers (this might just have been a uk thing but every night at 8pm people would stand outside their houses and applaud the healthcare workers, it was actually rlly sweet <3)
spends too much time gaming that mama Bowman actually has to put those parental restrictions on all his devices so he does not spend the whole day gaming. he’s gamed for 19 hours straight once and had such a bad headache the next day
Brooklynn:
makes vlogs. constantly. she needs something to keep her occupied
gradually spirals into spending too much time on conspiracy theory websites/videos
epitome of that meme (people at the start of lockdown baking banana bread vs people 12 weeks into lockdown ready to abolish the police)
also goes to a lot of protests (is covid safe obviously)
comes to a point where she is on her laptop so much her dads have to take it away from her
just as well because she is coming down with a migraine and will probably not even be able to look at a screen tomorrow
post migraine episode, loves spending more time with her dads and the three of them have movie/game nights together
they also make her get back into home learning because she pretty much stopped it the more she got into her conspiracy videos
Sammy:
loves it. spends so much time outside so she doesn’t get cooped up
organises weekly video calls with the nublar six
invites Yaz and her mother to live with her (Yaz’s mother can work remotely) and it’s awesome
tries to do the workout videos with Yaz but some of them are pretty impossible (i hc her core is really weak post scorpius rex because the quills probably tore muscles and she just never regained her fitness)
gets super into doing just dance and makes Yaz and her mom join in and it’s a blast (i did this in lockdown lol)
Yaz:
tries to use this as an opportunity to workout more. goes on morning runs with her mother every day. does half an hour of exercise. we all know she did joe wicks videos in lockdown lbfr
actually has fantastic fitness by the end of lockdown and sorta misses it when it ends
the only one of the n6 who pay attention to the home learning set by their school
helps Sammy out on the ranch, and loves it
Kenji:
hates it. will only mask/distance with someone forcing him to at first
but then he actually gets covid and it’s such a horrible experience for him that he’s a lot more careful
gets pretty touch starved without the others (like he’ll ever admit it bfr) and has to text Darius, Brand and mama Bowman to ask for a hug
he’ll never admit this either but the whole global pandemic thing makes him anxious and talks it through with mama Bowman
also gets into gaming and plays mario kart with Darius and Brand. he has never won but that won’t stop him trying
watches all of dance moms and all of hannah montana
Ben:
will err on the side of caution in regards to covid safety
gets groceries delivered, shops online, stays mostly indoors.
only time he goes out is to spend time in the woods where he’s alone
spends a month on isla Nublar when the isolation really gets to him and he does a bit better from then on
spends so much time with his mom. he loves it but they also argue a fair bit

Teddy bears
13th Doctor x GN!Reader (romantic)
The Doctor doesn’t realize the bear she bought you would have lasting consequences.
Fluff, pure fuckin fluff
The Doctor really really should’ve thought better when you came running up to her, practically death gripping her hands and dragging her back to the shop you had launched yourself into. Her brain was running a thousand miles a minute, trying to figure out what you had found, or if you had gotten into trouble. Instead, she saw the shop keep setting a brown stuffed bear on a shelf behind the counter, with two TARDIS blue hearts stitched over the chest.
"Please, Doctor. I would've given them earth currency but we don't have a universal currency and I don't know what currency this planet takes. I won't ask you to pay for anything ever again." You had practically begged, your voice coming out with words that even her brain had a hard time keeping track of.
The Doctor had to laugh, you looked adorable looking between her and the bear. Your feet were still tapping in excitement at finding the bear at all. "Yeah, we can get you the bear, if that is what your asking for."
"I forgot to even mention what I wanted! Oh thank you so much!" You didn't even think and pulled the woman in for a kiss.
The Doctor eagerly kissed back, her brain lighting up with ideas of what else she could do to have more kisses like this. Obviously more stuffed animals had made their way onto her list. She gently pulled away and rested her hands on your hips, laughing softly.
~
She really should've thought better when you started carrying the bear around everywhere, if she even mentioned there could've been a chance at sleeping outside The TARDIS. You had it stuffed in a bag you took everywhere. You and The Fam were curled up in a tiny tent, miles away from the TARDIS and you had pulled the bear out, setting it in your lap as she paced back and forth.
Yaz just smiled at the bear while Ryan snorted. "You still carry it around everywhere."
You smiled and nodded. "Gotta have a piece of my Time Lord with me everywhere I go. Plus, she's gonna be so busy tonight trying to figure out how to fix all this, she won't be open to cuddling. So next best thing."
The Doctor stilled at that, and then started pacing again. Graham was the one who picked up on The Doctor's stutter in her walk and the smile that had crossed the Time Lord's face.
Of course, you had been right and spent the night curled around the bear, and The Doctor had just stared at you. Your face had been burrowed into the bear's chest, barely enough room for you breath but it was how you slept with her.
~
The Doctor really should've checked the bear after that night, because when she heard you talking to someone in her room, her heart dropped and when she peeked her head in, and saw you curled up in her lilac and rainbow bedding, that damned bear sitting on your chest with her voice coming out of it.
She immediately pulled her sonic out and tried to discretely sonic it but your ears had caught the whirring and you sat up. "Hi Doc!"
Her eyes watched as the bear fell onto her side of the bed and she couldn't help but feel the spike of jealousy in her hearts as you readjusted the bear into a sitting position. She slowly moved the rest of the way into the room and sat next to the bear. "So when did you get it to speak to you?"
You tilted your head before looking at the bear. "I thought you did that. I had left her on the bed when we went out on Lavernus and when I came back she had started talking back to me."
"She?" The Doctor asked and you looked away from her, trying to not show how flustered you were.
"I mean, its kinda obvious who I'm projecting onto that bear, Doc."
"I just heard my own voice come out of that bear. I know the bear is representing me."
"Oh-Oh good, because its kinda embarrassing to project your girlfriend onto a stuffed bear."
The Doctor suddenly pulled you into a kiss, her hand wrapped the back of your head, gently keeping you in place. When she finally pulled away, she pressed her forehead to yours and a smile was on her face. "Do you know how jealous of that bear I have been since I bought it for you?"

Blood Attracts Monster's Part 5!
Sorry, this took so long! It kinda got away from me, and the I started writing and couldn't stop! I think there will be one or two more parts after this. If you want me to @ you for the next part, just comment so! If you have not read the first parts, do that before you read this one, otherwise you won't understand.
Kenji gasp as he's pulled forward, the screaming (not screaming, sirens) making it hard to think. The only thing Kenji can focus on is Ben's rough, warm hand wrapped around his own blood slicked one, and he tries not to think about how the blood got there (Crack).
Kenji allows Ben to pull him forward, his eyes wincing every time those damn red-light's blink.
Blink.
Kenji groans as a blue light wakes him up from the best sleep he's had since before Nublar. He's on his stomach, and his clock says its still 5 in the morning. His phone sits on the small nightstand next to his bed, and its vibrating, the screen lighting up blue with a phone call. He huffs and turns his face into the pillow, reaching a hand out blindly to grab the device.
A small chuckle blows warm air against his ear. Kenji lifts his head, his heart dropping in fear for moment before his gaze locks with baby blue eyes, and God, Kenji would know those eyes anywhere.
Kenji's brought back to the present when he runs into Ben's back. He looks around wildly for the rest of the group but can't focus on anything with those damn red lights, the screeching sirens echoing off the bare walls, the pounding of heavy feet behind them.
Without thinking, Kenji takes the lead, pulling Ben down a hallway to their right, murmuring "This way," under his breath. He hears Ben give a relieved breath, and he dares to look behind him, locking eyes with those baby blue eyes. Eyes that are looking back at him like he's an angel sent from heaven.
Ben pushes himself up on an elbow and reaches over Kenji, grabbing the phone and squinting as he looks at the screen. Kenji's eyes lock on the way Ben's muscles bulge in his bicep from holding him up, and he can't help but blush. How much did he drink last night?
More importantly, when did Ben get so hot?
Kenji has to force himself to look forward, because otherwise he may drown in those eyes. He feels hope bubble in his chest when he sees a slightly opened set of doors (and it's a large pair of doors, which might cause trouble later, but that's the least of Kenji's worries right now) and decides he's grateful for those flashing lights after all.
He pulls Ben through the door, relieved that the lights are a solid, soft white. He's even more relieved when he realizes they're in a garage.
"Come on," Ben says in a soft voice, and they both move at the same time, rushing towards the closest car.
"Kenji?"
Kenji's eye's flick back up to Ben's, whose looking at him with an amused look. "Sorry, what?"
"It's Yaz," Ben says in a soft voice, softer then Kenji's ever heard it, and it makes his insides warm and his heart skip. Ben wiggles the phone in his hand.
"Oh," Kenji sighs, laying his head back on the pillow. "I'll call her back in the morning."
Ben nods and sets the phone on silent before laying down as well, turning on his side to face Kenji. Kenji feels a hesitant hand lay on the small of his back, and he smiles slightly, yawning.
He giggles, "dude, I am so buzzed."
And he is. Or he hopes he is, because how else would you explain Ben being in his bed, touching Kenji so gently, the warm, butterfly like feeling in Kenji's chest, and, to Kenji embarrassment, the fact that the two boys are naked.
Kenji thinks he see's disappointment in Ben's eyes, but it's so dark, Kenji just blames it on the dim lighting. "Me too..."
And when Ben removes his hand from Kenji's back, Kenji can't help but miss the warmth.
Kenji feels his anxiety spike when Ben lets go of his hand but perseveres and slips into the driver's seat. Just as Ben reaches the passenger door, the doors they entered from bang open (Kenji knew those doors were going to be trouble, God damn it) and the Baryonyx steps in, letting out an ear shattering screech. Kenji covers his mouth to hide his frightened sob, squeezing his eyes shut.
They're going to die here
Kenji's mind shutters, images rushing behind his eyes quickly.
He's three and his mother smiles at him, singing a gentle song about him being her sunshine, but all Kenji can think about is how wrong she is, because no one shone as bright as his mother, not even the sun.
He's five and he scrapes his knee but his mother, his beautiful, shinning mother, comes over and kisses it better, giving him a smile the makes him feel warm.
He's seven, and he's supposed to be in bed, but he crept out to get a glass of water. He's frozen at the top of the stairs, listening to his father whisper yell and his mother quietly sob in the living room.
He's eight when his father gets the phone call and rushes out the door. Kenji was so confused when the neighbor came over to watch him, but she brought her dog, so it was okay.
He's nine and his father is taking him by the shoulders, telling him it's going to be alright. And how could Kenji not believe him? This king of a man, who, just like Kenji's mother, shines so bright.
He's nine and standing by a large hole, his father standing beside him. They both wear black. She was hit by a car; Kenji was told gently by the doctor. Died on impact. But how could that be? Just that morning she was so full of life, singing Kenji his song before he had to go to school.
He's ten when his father stops talking to him.
Fifteen when his father sends him away to some island. and at first, he thought it was going to be awful, but the other kids seem alright, especially the pink haired girl. The brown-haired boy is kind of cute.
He's fifteen when the nightmare begins. The dripping fangs, endless running, constant fear.
Fifteen when Ben falls from the train, and he should've done more, I should've done more.
Fifteen when Ben comes back, and suddenly everything might be okay, because finally their all back together again.
He's fifteen when he kisses Brooklyn for the first time, and it makes his heart skip a beat and he can't help but smile, but he feels a bit sad when he sees Ben looking at them.
He's sixteen when they finally get home, but Kenji has no were to go. Darius takes him in, because we're brothers now, he says. Kenji never realized he wanted a brother.
He's twenty-two when he breaks up with Brooklyn, when he calls Ben for comfort. When he realizes maybe he's been wrong about himself.
He's twenty-two when Brooklyn dies, and it feel like a punch to the stomach.
He's twenty-two when his dad dies, and he may have been awful, but he was still his dad, and God did it hurt like hell.
He's twenty-two when he starts to get that fuzzy feeling again, only this time it's for a boy with brown hair and big blue eyes.
Twenty-two when he hurts that boy because he's in pain, so much pain, and has been lied to so many times and he needs to take it out on someone, anyone, and Ben's the only one nearby.
Twenty-two when he realizes, this may be the last moment he's alive, and what has he done with his life? What has he accomplished? How will people remember him?
Kenji doesn't know, all he does know is opening his eyes when a warm hand cups his face. only knows that his hands are taken away from his mouth as another pair of soft lips are placed on his before being taken away.
Only knows that Ben Pincus (nose crooked, blood caking his face) jumps out of the car and runs away.
Straight towards the monster.

Dinosaur-Human Hybrids AU
This AU is roughly based on the original concept for the scrapped Jurassic Park 4 film which was about an initiative to create dinosaur-human hybrids.
In this AU, Camp Cretaceous was a cover to lure kids to Isla Nublar where they would be experimented on and forcefully injected with dinosaur DNA. But the fall of Jurassic World gives them a chance at escape...
The hybrid combinations are below the cut:
Darius Bowman - Pteranodon
Arms turned into wings with hands protruding from the ends instead of talons. These hands are only capable of simple clutching movements
Can only glide for short distances and has difficulty taking off from the ground
Feet turned into a set of dexterous and long hooked talons that act as a second set of hands. These hands are capable of more complex movements than the ones attached to his wings
The awkwardness of his feet makes walking difficult and requires him to use his wings for balance
A small, pointed crest protrudes from the back of his head but it's more proportional to his head size than the crests of actual pteranodons
He has carnivorous leanings but can get away with eating smaller mammals and fish and has little instinct to consume larger prey (including the other kids)
Kenji Kon - Brachiosaurus
Elephant-like feet that are difficult to move because of their weight
Long, thick tail that sets him off balance. He has a lot of control over this tail, and can use it to thwack or whip objects or creatures
Difficulty digesting food without swallowing rocks called gastroliths (book detail). The human part of his brain hates swallowing rocks though
Can extend his legs to gain an extra few inches
Small, semi-circle crest protruding from the middle of his head
Brooklyn - Dilophosaurus
Colorful neck frill that expands when she's upset or angry
Half-developed venom glands. She has extreme difficulty shooting the venom and ends up swallowing most of it, resulting in sickness
Two crests on the top of her head extending to the back of her skull
Patches of colorful patterning on her body
Can become sporadically aggressive and attack the other kids before snapping out of it
Carnivorous and has little appetite for anything except for meat
Ben Pincus - Ankylosaurus
Hardened back plates covered in spines. The spines on his sides are larger and flatter than the ones along his shoulders and spine
The coloration of the back plates is similar to Bumpy's
Long clubbed tail
He has minimal control over his tail, and sometimes whacks himself with it. The added weight of the club also puts him off balance
Four face spikes- two protruding from his cheeks and two protruding from his temples. These spikes are dull but can hurt others if he forgets they're there
Sammy Gutierrez - Triceratops
Spiked crest protruding from the base of her head that obstructs some of her peripheral vision. The added weight of the crest also makes her dizzy sometimes
Two long, curved horns protruding from her temple. They're long and sharp enough that she has to worry about accidentally hurting the other kids
A smaller, duller horn protrudes from the tip of her nose
Small, stubby tail
Heavy, elephant-like feet. They're lighter than Kenji's so she's more maneuverable
Yasmina "Yaz" Fadoula - Velociraptor
Misshapen, bowed legs that allow her to run faster while crouched. She can also pounce really high in the air
Lizard-like eyes that allow her to see details across long distances but make her far-sighted. The added scope of vision is often overwhelming
When she gets overly emotional or scared, her voice turns into velociraptor calls and chirps that hurt her throat
Like Brooklyn, she can spontaneously become aggressive
Carnivorous with little appetite for anything except for meat
#not sure exactly of the timeline of this au but that's a problem for a later me#just imagining this kids trying to coexist like this is kinda heartbreaking <3#jwcc#jurassic world camp cretaceous#hybrid au#darius bowman#kenji kon#brooklyn#ben pincus#sammy gutierrez#yasmina fadoula#considering reworking this to be the plot of the isla sorna au hmmm#hybrids au

This wasn't the first time that Yaz had watched the Doctor fall out of the sky, not by a long shot. For somebody with wings, they really did fall out of the sky a lot. But that didn't make it any easier to watch them get knocked out of the sky.
This time, the Doctor wasn't even trying to run away from anyone or anything. She had just been trying to get back down from the roof to the ground without having to take the stairs when a weight struck her in the back of the head, and then she was hurtling towards the ground at great speed, far faster than she should have been.
The next thing that the Doctor knew was darkness and a splitting pain in their head. Oh, and someone was yelling too. Whoever it was sounded worried — had something happened?
Yaz and Dan were standing at the very edge of the roof, by a concrete barrier that lined its perimeter, having just watched the Doctor leap off of the edge of the multi-story building instead of taking the very much intact stairs.
But then something blocky was launched out of a window a few floors down; it struck the Doctor right on the back and sent them crashing down towards the ground like a sack of bricks.
Yaz's heart was in her throat as she booked it down the stairs, going almost two at a time. Her shoes crunched against the gravel when she crossed the small space between the bottom of the stairs and where the Doctor was sprawled out in a heap of limbs on the ground.
Dan was calling her name, but she ignored him; whatever it was could wait. Something dense and just as blocky as whatever had hit the Doctor thudded against the ground not too far from her, closely followed by another one. Yaz had to get them both out of the impact zone before either of them got struck (again, in the Doctor's case).
There was blood clumped in their feathers and tangled in their hair too — bad enough that nearly the entirety of the back of the Doctor's head was red and sticky instead of blonde. They had hit the ground hard and potentially head-first, and with all this blood, it was likely that they had a head injury of some kind. With that in mind, Yaz was careful not to jostle her head around too much, or her wings either, for that matter. Being mindful of the Doctor's wings made carrying them a bit awkward, not because of the weight (they weighed practically nothing) but from having the shoulder of their admittedly rather large wing shoved against her stomach.
"We have to get back to the TARDIS!" she shouted at Dan, before setting off towards where the very top of the blue box could be seen between crumbling concrete remains of other buildings.
By the time that Yaz reached its doors, the Doctor's blood had soaked into her shirt, turning the green cloth a dark red colour. Instead of entering into the console room as usual, she stepped straight into the medical bay. A predominantly white-and-grey room that clashed with the colour scheme of the rest of the TARDIS, it was lined with cabinents on all sides and had a single cot in the middle.
Well, that saved her from having to walk around and find this place.
Yaz set the Doctor on the cot, and the light jostling she got from that was enough to rouse her. Their wings pulled back tight against their back in pursuit of their usual position, or they tried to — the Doctor let out a hiss of pain and gave up, leaving their wings in an awkward half-pulled in and half-outstretched position.
"Ow," she complained eloquently.
By then, Yaz was already busying herself with looking for bandages and stuff to disenfect the wounds scattered across their head and shoulders.
"I feel like I've been run over by a truck. Why do I feel like I've been run over by a truck?" they questioned.
"Try being stoned out of the sky by a brick," Yaz told them, finally finding what she was looking for. Dan had found the bandages for her.
The Doctor was quiet for an extended moment before saying, "Oh. I knew I recognised the year!" But then they stopped short of whatever they planned to say next, turning to look at both Dan and Yaz.
"You two weren't hit, were you?" they asked. Their concern blazed through the confusion that still lingered in their eyes. Both of them shook their heads.
"Nah," Dan said. "We both got away unscathed,"
"Yeah. What was the thing that hit you? They looked like bricks—?"
"They were bricks — Terran clay bricks that you two are familiar with. The people of Zuruzaffos are...very fond of bricks and not very fond of winged people this decade,"
…What.
Before Yaz could ask about it any further, a drop of blood that rolled its way slowly down the side of their neck reminded her of why the two of them were here in the medical bay in the first place. She dabbed a bit of the rubbing alcohol onto the rag she'd grabbed.
"I'm going to disinfect and clean the back of your head," Yaz warned as she approached their back. "This is probably going to hurt, if all the blood is anything to go by,"
The Doctor's wings twitched slightly when the rag made contact with her head, but she would bet it was less because of the antiseptic and more because there was somebody so close behind her. Yaz used another, not nearly as bloody, rag to clean the blood off of their hair.
At some point, Dan disappeared off somewhere else within the TARDIS and silence reigned in the medical bay. Once Yaz finished disinfecting, she exchanged the rag for the bandages that Dan had left on the closest table.
The brick had left a jaggard line down the back of their head, and at the sight of just how bad the injury was, Yaz paused.
What was she doing?
She knew first aid — had to be qualified in it for her job — but that training had covered how to treat cuts and this looked bad. It stretched a decent way down the length of their head. She had no idea if it needed stitches or not.
Yaz couldn't just leave it untreated; and from its size and all of this hair in the way, adhesive bandages wouldn't be able to cover it properly, so bandages it was.
In the time that it took for her to turn her attention away from the Doctor, she had tried to get up. They had swung their feet over the edge of the cot. She didn't make it anywhere close to the door before Yaz called her back.
"Hold still," she scolded, after having to start bandaging again for the third time because their wriggling had made it come loose before she could tie it off.
With a frown, the Doctor did as requested…mostly. She swung her legs against the cot instead while keeping her upper body completely still.
At one point, the Doctor's eyes slid closed and her breathing quietened, as if she were falling asleep. It was midday, or it was midday on the planet outside the TARDIS, so they shouldn't be feeling tired yet. Right? With a frown, Yaz freed up a hand to nudge her back awake again.
"Hey," she said, when golden eyes met her own. "You can't fall asleep yet,"
"Why not?"
"Because it's only midday,"
"On Zuruzaffos," they pointed out. "It can be any time we want it to be in the TARDIS,"
Okay, fair enough.
"Yeah, good point but you still can't sleep yet," Yaz told her. "That brick hit you square on the head; you could have a concussion,"
The Doctor's face scrunched up into what she had long since come to think of as their 'thinking face'.
"I don't have a concussion," she concluded. "Fairly sure I don't, anyway,"
There's no way that you could know that, Yaz thought before reconsidering.
"How sure is 'fairly sure you don't have a concussion'?"
The Doctor looked away. "…87%?"
"That's still a 13% chance that you do have a concussion," she pointed out. "So until the chance you don't becomes 100%, you're staying awake,"
The Doctor frowned but didn't protest any further.
Yaz finished with bandaging their head. "Do you want me to look at your wings too or—"
"—I can handle them myself, just need a mirror," they cut her off. Their wings twitched, and a loose feather fluttered to the floor.
Yaz left them to it and headed off to her TARDIS room to change out of her blood-stained shirt into another shirt that wasn't sticky enough to cling to her.
Time went on. The Doctor reappeared in the console room some time later with her hair rearranged to cover the bandages more and the blood cleaned off of her wings. Said limbs didn't look any worse for wear than having a few feathers ruffled out of place.
Yaz wasn't so sure about the truth in their claim that they didn't have a concussion. She was actually more convinced that they did when she watched as their foot caught on the side of the console. But she didn't get a chance to confront them about it before the Doctor was rushing off back deeper into the TARDIS about something that was…in the pool…for some reason?

The Church on Ruby Road (spoilers)
Oh my god! I absolutely loved that! Ncuti Gatwa is phenomenal. He's got so much presence right from the start, and there were some lovely little Doctor-ish quirks that he got across very nicely. I particularly liked his disdain for the Goblins' supposed time travel, him loving the name Lulubelle and the way he rattled off his police interview answers (though the bit about the proposal was perhaps a little too Sherlock). On a sadder note, his 'maybe I'm the bad luck' line was also delivered really well.
Ruby Sunday is pretty cool too, though I'm not quite as sold on her yet. Millie Gibson's performance felt just a trifle stilted to me, but I hope that goes away as she relaxes into the role. I loved her family, especially her gran. It's so nice to have a wider companion family like this again. We got it a bit with Yaz (and sort of Ryan and Graham), but I hope we get to see a bit more of this lot!
I wasn't sure what I was going to think of the Goblins, but I really like the alternative physics time travel thing they have going on with the language of luck. The Doctor's line about learning the vocabulary of rope was great; some real 'resonating concrete' vibes. But yes, the Goblins were fun and interesting. I don't know if they'll become anything particularly iconic, but not every villain needs to be.
The musical number was enormous fun. Obviously the first part was released ahead of time, but the Doctor and Ruby launching into a second part was unexpected and fantastic. Ncuti has a damn good voice. There have been questions about whether a musical episode of the show could work before, and I'm definitely here for it if there's ever a plan to give us more than just one song! Ruby's own ability to sing (improvisationally!) was also quite nicely set up with her being in a band.
Perhaps the best part of the episode was when Ruby was taken out of time. Her mum being a far more jaded and unhappy person, with even the lighting getting dimmer, was incredibly effective. Her declaring she was happy alone with tears in her eyes, the Doctor also crying, really got me. Ncuti's performance throughout that as well gave me a lot of faith in what's to come (not that I needed any, given what I've seen of him in Sex Education). (That 'then why are you crying' also had more than a hint of Amy crying for Rory.)
I have to mention the timeless child stuff. As with what he did with the flux in Wild Blue Yonder, I'm over the moon that RTD is taking things from the last era and actually doing stuff with it. I know there will be people angry about it because they expected him to retcon the whole thing, but I far prefer this approach. Granted, I never minded the timeless child stuff that much (unlike the flux), but it was really effective having the Doctor actually bring up the fact that he doesn't know where he's from. I wonder if RTD is planning to do anything more with it, or if it will just be used as character and relationship building material.
Smaller stuff:
We got another mavity mention, so is this just here to stay or is it part of a longer arc?
The way the gloves work didn't make sense to me. The way the Doctor explained them was as if the weight just shifted to the glove (which makes sense for making balancing and gripping easier), but if that's the case where does the extra weight come from when pulling the rope down? Oh well, I'll just imagine they're magic weight deletion/creation devices and move on with my life.
That spike through the Goblin King at the end was brutal! I'm surprised they were allowed to show it. No blood or anything, I suppose, but still!
Ruby's mother (we presume) was somehow still walking away after the Doctor's whole escapade with the Goblins. Bad directing (I might have bought it if she were much further away on a long road) or an indication of more at play? Either way, presumably this isn't the last of that plot thread!
What the hell is going on with Mrs Flood? When she was watching the Doctor towards the end, I thought it was pretty strange, and then in the mid-credits sequence I started to wonder if she was something more than she seemed. Then came the look to camera and her line about TARDISes… Technically, this could be a weird little moment a la Feast of Steven, but it seems more likely something else is at play. The Toymaker could bend the rules of reality, so perhaps she could be part of the legions he mentioned, able to break the fourth wall at will. We shall see, I suppose!
#doctor who#the church on ruby road#ncuti gatwa#millie gibson#ruby sunday#fifteen#doctor who spoilers#dw#mine#dwe15#this is my new tag for now to match the way I tag classic stuff#since we're going to be back at series 1 again (my way of tagging new who)#the e stands for era btw in case anyone is for some reason curious about my tagging system#as opposed to dws1 for example for series 1#I suppose I could have used d for doctor but I like it as it is#reactions#dwmine#I don't know why I'm using a title for once#but there we go#also - tiny thing - how did the priest not hear the raging goblin battle right above him?#and the final episode of ghosts is starting in less than half an hour!#my brain is being pulled in two directions oh no

ㅤ he brings the storm in his wake ...
indie , mutually exclusive , novelizations & canon compliant , with possible divergences + headcanon based portrayal of bbc doctor who's fifteenth regeneration of the doctor. carrd tracklist blogroll pinterest

inspired themes: i bring life , the last of your kind , loneliness , running , your fears coming to life , the need for adventure , abandonment , loss , maybe i'm the bad luck , found family , laughing hard , moving on - onwards and upwards , not dealing with trauma
* due to various reasons, hectic work hours, depression (because of work lol), sudden onset of arthritis & impending grief, my activity will be a lot lower than usual. i of course want to write & will try to as much as possible, but please not if i dont send any memes or respond to any replies right away its not because of a lack of interest. 💛
001.
no drama, dont pressure for replies, no vague blogging. don't be a dick, don’t follow if you don’t plan on interacting with me. you can reblog from me but don't use me as a resource. activity may be somewhat low as i have a full-time job, life outside of rp & other blogs i want to try to be active on, this blog will be the one i plan on being the most active on however.
002.
racists, homophobes, transphobes, antisemites, islamophobes etc are not welcome here. i will block in those circumstances. dark themes may be present as they relate to my muse: death, war, depictions of ptsd, grief, please be advised. i have no issues writing darker themes, however, i will not write or interact with those who write rape, incest, pedophilia.
003.
i would love to establish dynamics, whether it be romantic, antagonistic, platonic, etc. however i reserve the right to be selective. shipping or dynamics may require plotting or interaction beforehand. the likeliness of writing smut is low but not completely impossible. i am open to fade-to black & plots with kissing. i have been in the mood to try writing it again but i am a little rusty.
004.
i will be wholeheartedly staying true to canon wrt the timeless child arc & won't budge on it (insp from both 13s & 15s runs with possible headcanons) it is an arc that i enjoyed from both different runs. that & it's hugely important to 15's arc this season, specifically with his connection to ruby. i don't think it really makes the doctor more overpowered or important than they already are to the story.
005.
on the doctor's sexuality / gender & more on shipping: i don't have a set sexuality for the doctor, i think the doctor is queer for sure, and this version is less asexual compared to some of the other doctors. that said, i don't think the doctor thinks about labels for themselves or considers them much outside of understanding they are important to other people (humans in particular). the doctor's interests wrt romantic and sexual also changes when their face changes in some ways, less so actual sexuality and just some things might be a bit different but still the same. the doctor goes by both they / them & he / him pronouns. i will be very interested in shipping. however, despite this regeneration of the doctor being more flirty, more open, i do think it will still be difficult in a lot of the same ways with the other versions of the doctors. the doctor wants wants wants to fix himself to someone like 13 did with yaz but in a lot of ways he's still very hesitant because of how much it will hurt when he loses them. he's also still grieving river. so as flirty and more open as the doctor is, he may also be frustrating lol.
006.
i prefer at least one paragraph threads, but it's not necessary. the best way to write with me is by sending memes or plotting. i generally do not do starters and will rarely like starter calls. i personally don't use much formatting when it comes to replies, it's made it easier to write and feels better. at the most, i sometimes use icons and sometimes will use small text but that will be extremely rare. feel free to format however you like.

The boys were asleep. They slept on the floor right in the console room, mostly refusing to sleep in their rooms. As Yaz put it, it's "fear of change". They don't want to trust that a good change has come into their lives.
The TARDIS hums, as if speaking. And then....she does speak. Only to the Doctor, the eternal faithful to the TARDIS. "....you know what we need to do. Rules be blast, any decree begone..." Her intent is set, the blast of energy being felt from outside the ship as the time vortex opens, sending them to the past...
And then, outside on the screens after the time vortex fades away, the mix of colors fading, is a floating laboratory. Mixed into an asteroid, it seems to have been built around it, signs of life everywhere. But most evident of all was the sign of a ending regeneration in one of the higher rooms. The date seems to be roughly 17 years prior to when they had left, the TARDIS currently floating nearby the asteroid.
The Doctor was glad the boys had been found by her TARDIS, that they had found her and she had found her way back into her home and along the way found herself with two boys that she loved fiercely and deeply.
She knew that this was wrong, she knew that the paradoxes of this could be horribly bad. But she would run across the universe fixing them if it meant her boys could be safe, not hurt in the way that they were.
She looked from the console to see them so soundly sleeping. Safe.
For not just once but it seemed even the TARDIS had become fiercely protective of the boys as well. For a slight change they agreed on where they had to go and what had to be done.
Once they had landed there's a deep breathe from the Doctor who carefully approached the twins, a soft moving of hair from their faces a soft kiss to the tops of their heads before she would move to the doors and step out, she didn't even need to lock the door she heard them click shut behind her.
The Doctor was here to do what she did best, save people.
This time it was her sons from a life that they never deserved to have.

I’m at the stage of life where I listen to songs and instantly hear them from either the point of view of The Doctor or Yaz or both. Definitely a normal stage of growth. Humany-wumany, even
Lyrics:
Put a bend in the road
I'm too lost and tired
To see where I'm going
What I left behind
And I'm moving
So slow
Don't know when I'll arrive
So put a bend in the road
I'm growing tired
Of straight lines
I set off for the shore
Then was finally slipped away
From the ones I adored
And the place I was raised
And I rode down the road
Just to watch it go by
And when and where is love?
Maybe nowhere tonight
Everyone needs a touch
Or a shoulder for crying
The say love is a crutch
I say love is blind
And that's all that she needed
But I could not supply
When a bend in the road
Put it out of my mind
Then a strange little girl
Who was everything I ever dreamed
I could love or be loved by
So put a bridge
Or a hill
Or a forest of pines
Or a river of blue
I can run alongside
I'll sleep when it's night
I follow all the signs
Just put a bend in the road
I'm growing tired of straight lines
Put a bend in the road
I'm growing tired of straight lines

Escape
13th Doctor & Reader (Platonic)
You needed to escape, everywhere and anywhere.
Little note here, The reader is implied to still be living with family and in their early twenties
478 Words
You wrote the little note down and placed it on your door, it was a simple note, one that read "I'll be back later" and you had texted The Doctor. You made sure to keep quiet while you waited for her. You knew she'd show up, whether it be an hour or so after your text.
You heard that familiar groan and you grabbed your bag, slinging it onto your shoulder, You had made a landing area for The TARDIS in your bedroom with a little mat incase she came bounding out covered in slime again. That was the worst clean up and the two of you having to explain the noise.
You watched as the box materialized and you barely even gave The Doctor any warning as you pushed the doors open. "Lets get out of here!"
You turned to close the door, your head turning to look over your shoulder to make sure The Doctor had listened to you. The Blond was hurriedly flipping switches and pulling the lever down. You let out a soft laugh before groaning. "I think I forgot my phone."
"Its in your pocket, kiddo."
You felt your pockets before feeling your phone and you smiled. "Thanks, Doc."
The Doctor looked over at you, raising a brow as she let The TARDIS drift along in space. "So, what are you running away from?"
You shrugged, moving to place your bag onto the floor of The TARDIS. "Nothing. Just got overwhelming, would rather be here with you and The Fam and Dan. Its a lot quieter, that's for sure."
The Doctor shook her head lightly, looking at you for a minute longer before gesturing to the door way deeper into The TARDIS. "Go on, go get settled. Don't forget to set your laptop up in case someone video calls you!"
You laughed as you listened to her, doing a mock salute. "Of course, mum."
The Doctor stilled and a smile crossed her face. "Yeah, yeah. Go on! I'll see if we can stop by one of your favorite places in time again? Maybe your favorite planet?"
"Sounds great, Doc! I'll be back in a couple of minutes." You called back to her and headed toward The TARDIS usually placed your room.
The Doctor fiddled with her console while she waited, making the flash decision to pick up the rest of The Fam, she knew you'd like to hang out with Yaz and Ryan, as they were close in your age range. She was pretty sure. Graham would follow in case Ryan needed him and then she could go pick up Dan, probably rescue him from getting kicked out of the Museum of Liverpool, although she could just tell the museum to let him keep doing tours.
The Doctor would always be there when you need to run, she'd always make sure of that.

Timestamp #298: Praxeus
Doctor Who: Praxeus (1 episode, s12e06, 2020)
A lot of moving parts in a story where nothing is as it seems.
Picking up immediately after Fugitive of the Judoon, several plot threads are rapidly laid down.
A spacecraft plummets toward Earth. An astronaut named Adam Lang tries to salvage it, but his capsule begins to spin violently. On the planet below, a suspended police officer named Jake Willis tackles a shoplifter, but he’s scolded by his manager for his actions. Finally, in Peru, Gabriela Camara and Jamila Velez are disgusted by a river polluted by plastic waste. Later that night, Jamila is attacked by an unseen force.
Jake retires to a local bar and sees the news about Adam Lang’s crash. Jake is distraught, but his mood changes when he receives a text message from someone claiming to be Adam asking for help in Hong Kong. He tries to break into a warehouse and fails. Lucky for him, Yaz and Graham arrive with a set of skeleton keys. He questions Graham and Yaz, assuming they are from the European Space Agency, but Yaz explains they’re following some strange energy readings. They’re also being watched by a man in a hazmat suit.
Gabriela wakes up and searches for Jamila. When a bird falls from the sky, Ryan arrives and warns her away from it. Gabriela presses Ryan about her friend before introducing herself as a travel vlog influencer. She soon gets a message about an ambulance call-out a mile away.
In Madagascar, a lab worker named Aramu greets his co-worker Suki Cheng. They both rush to help the Doctor as the Time Lord rescues someone from the ocean. The stranded man is a member of the US Navy, a survivor of a recent submarine accident. The sailor is soon consumed by a rock-like substance and disintegrates. The two lab workers are very confused.
Ryan and Gabriela arrive at a deserted San Pedro hospital. Ryan finds another dead bird and Gabriela finds Jamila inside a quarantine area. Jamila is covered in the same stone substance, prompting Ryan to call the Doctor. The TARDIS arrives as Jamila disintegrates, leaving Gabriela upset as the Doctor realizes the severity of the situation.
Yaz and Graham track down the strange energy readings and find a room filled with alien consoles. Adam is strapped to a table, looking sick and still in his spacesuit. Yaz calls the Doctor as two figures in hazmat suits burst in and start shooting. Yaz distracts them with a control panel while Jake and Graham escape with Adam. Jake steals the rifles and shoots the attackers. The Doctor arrives and realizes the attackers and their weapons aren’t from Earth.
All of the players thus far board the TARDIS, but Yaz and Gabriela decide to stay behind and study the control device. The Doctor is hesitant but soon relents, sending the TARDIS on its way and examining Adam. She gets a call from Madagascar and returns to the beach. As the team heads for the lab, Graham learns that Adam and Jake are married but on a break. Meanwhile, the birds begin to swarm over the beach.
In Hong Kong, Yaz determines that the control panel is triangulating signals from two other places, including Madagascar. One of the hazmat aliens survived, and it stumbles into the room and teleports away. Yaz and Gabriela decide to follow, landing somewhere dark but safe amid equipment from the downed submarine
Ryan shows a dead bird to the Doctor and she asks him to dissect it. She asks Graham and Jake to give Adam an IV drip, then works with Suki to analyze Adam’s readings. The astronaut is infected with an alien pathogen and the Doctor has no idea how to stop it. Jake leaves and Graham tries to comfort him. Jake explains that he’s not good with emotions, commitment, or foreign travel, and knowing that his husband is an astronaut, he doesn’t believe that Adam could possibly love him.
Jake returns to Adam’s side as Suki analyzes Adam’s blood. Ryan finds that the bird is full of plastic, and the Doctor presumes that the alien pathogen attacked and metastasized the plastic. The Doctor rules out Auton interference before remembering that humans of the era always ingest microplastics. The pathogen has a buffet, but the Doctor notices that the bird’s natural enzymes are fighting the infection. Suki theorizes that she could make a countervirus.
The Doctor contacts Yaz and exchanges information. When she finds out that an alien signal is coming from Madagascar, she has an epiphany about Suki and learns that the infection is called Praxeus. Suki teleports away as the birds attack the lab. Everyone barely escapes with the samples and boards the TARDIS. Unfortunately, Aramu was previously attacked and unable to join them.
Adam volunteers for a clinical trial of the Doctor’s cure. The Doctor administers the antidote and programs the TARDIS to make more if it succeeds. She then leaves Adam and Jake in the TARDIS while the others search for Yaz and Gabriela. They discover they’re on an alien base under the Indian Ocean, centered under one of the world’s plastic pollution gyres. The birds are the infection vector and the travelers need to find Suki to stop them.
They find one of the aliens and suppose they’re also trying to find a cure. They soon find Suki, the last of her crew from a planet ruined by Praxeus. She traveled there to find a perfect lab and Earth fit the bill. The spacecraft was the source of the strange energy readings and the radiation that brought down Adam’s ship. The Doctor tries to help Suki but Praxeus overcomes the alien woman. Luckily, Jake and a cured Adam arrive with the antidote, and the team works together to distribute the cure with the alien shuttle’s organic engines. Everyone returns to the TARDIS as the shuttle takes off and floods the alien base, but Jake decides to stay behind when the shuttle’s autopilot fails.
The plan succeeds, but everyone thinks Jake has died after the shuttle disintegrates. The Doctor materializes the TARDIS around Jake at the last minute and the husbands kiss in gratitude.
Returning to the beach, Team TARDIS bids farewell to their new friends. They go their own ways, safe with the knowledge that no matter how far apart they are, the seven billion connected lives are safe.
This story has a lot of potential, but it gets bogged down with the varying plot threads, none of which gets enough room to breathe. It’s another example of a Chibnall-era story that would thrive as a two-parter with another editing pass.
The ecological message is definitely heavy-handed, but it doesn’t oppressively stifle the story like Orphan 55. We’ve had a preachy Doctor in the past, but this era’s interpretation lacks a degree of finesse.
Also missing in the finesse department is this story’s twist: I love adventures where there is no clear villain and the feint that portrays Suki as the villain is underwhelming because we learn that she’s a victim of Praxeus within minutes of her big reveal. With a little more subtlety, the twist could have been powerful on the level of other Doctor Who stories where the true villain is a force of nature instead of an army or single entity.
That said, I like the fast-moving mystery plot where the Doctor had to split her team to solve the puzzle. I also like the parallels between Praxeus and COVID-19, which was a full-blown pandemic when this episode aired.
Finally, I perked up when the Doctor mentioned the Autons. Their inclusion here would have made sense – we’ve only seen them in action three times in the franchise: Spearhead from Space, Terror of the Autons, and Rose – but, while creepy mannequins are fun additions to Doctor Who, it was a good move to not have a story about plastic pollution lean on them as villains.
This story settled out at a high 3, and as I’ve mentioned over the years, I tend to round up.
Rating: 4/5 – “Would you care for a jelly baby?”

tyler feels like he could cry in that moment, the alcohol working its way into his system and seeming to heighten everything he was feeling. happy tears, of course. yaz's words of assurance, the weight of her in his lap, her touch against his skin - it was like a blanket of warmth that draped over him and wrapped him up.
he relaxes under her while she answers the question and his arms come up to wrap around her waist to keep her there. he looks up at her with wonder before meeting her in the middle to breathe her in. when she moves to get off of him, tyler's bottom lip juts out in a pout.
however, it washes away quickly as he answers her question without any hesitation. "how cut throat you are." it's something he's thought about often, clearly. "the way you aren't afraid to share a piece of your mind and confront something head on. i feel like in today's world, everyone is so afraid of confrontation - me included. and to see you set your foot down with everyone and even myself when i... you know... hard launched us without talking to you first. it's just something that i feel has become something people don't know how to appreciate and they become real defensive when they're met face-to-face with it." he leans forward and crosses his arms across the top of the table. "and how smart you are. i know the people in your line of work don't think you're capable of doing things. but really, i know it's because they can't do it themselves and you show them up."
his face flushes a deeper red when he realizes he's rambled. he clears his throat and reaches for a card. "explain your first kiss and then compare it to our first kiss." he sets the card down and begins to laugh. tyler knows their first kiss story and how that turned out.
who: tyler && yaz! [@itsyazmin] where: cancun, mexico
their baecation, as tyler called it, was already proving to be one of tyler’s favorite memories of this lifetime. to say that he was enjoying himself would be an understatement. he was truly having the time of his life getting to spend time away from the outside world with his lover where they’d been able to get to know each other very well. which leads them to their current activity for tonight: truth or drink.
he sits across from her shuffling a deck of cards at their table in their private villa dressed in just a pair of shorts. it was his attire for majority of their stay here in mexico. 'soak up the rays before heading back to the city' he'd say while he tans besides yaz. he sets the cards down between them where two shot glasses and a bottle of tequila were also set. "you ready?" he asks her. "i haven't even taken a peek at what's on these cards, i'm kind of scared." he admits with a laugh while he picks a card up to ask her the first question.
"oh god." he reads the card in his head first and is unable to hide the shock on his face. but he's still chuckling. he expected this much (and more) from the couple's edition. but still, it was a whole thing to actually see it in tangible form in front of him.
"have you ever had a wet dream about one of your coworkers? who is it?" he sets the card down soon afterwards and leans forward with his arms crossed over the top of the table. "no cop out answers, i already know that i'm the obvious answer here." he says.

The Doctor climbed off the TARDIS' roof first. Her right hand was sticky with ice cream—with the last bites, it started shaking too much to hold it steady. Her trip down was clumsy; she clung onto the doorframe. Yaz offered her her hand, but either the Doctor didn't notice or was determined to manage it alone.
Yaz sat on the roof until she could be sure the Doctor was at the console. She ran her hand over the uneven wood, paint smooth under her fingers, held her fingertips to the warm blue light. She wouldn't say goodbye to the Doctor; she couldn't say goodbye. There would be another time. Another meeting, thirty-eight years from now, when Yaz was settled down with someone else, a different good-hearted weirdo, or when she was still off on her own.
She wasn't ready to be alone. (Her family wouldn't understand.)
One foot on the windowsill, Yaz hopped down and closed the door behind her. The TARDIS, bright as anything, the same air as always, the smell of salt (had it always been there, or had she just been spending too much time near the ocean lately?). Bells still ringing in her ears, at the back of her mind.
Goodbye, TARDIS.
The Doctor was still standing, clinging onto the console. Yaz joined her side and the Doctor grinned at her; stumbled; Yaz grabbed her arms before she fell. Together, they walked to the steps, and the Doctor sat—strange, Yaz had expected her to look her oldest in dying, but she could barely remember the Doctor this young.
Yaz felt nineteen again. She'd never felt this old.
The Doctor didn't say anything—Yaz didn't know if she could. She couldn't have responded either way. So she went back to the console, closed her eyes and trusted.
I want to go home, Yaz thought, and the TARDIS pulsed, stuttered, and stopped. Yaz shook her head. Try again. "Take me to Sheffield," she said. The Doctor would be faster, but the Doctor couldn't do more than watch, so Yaz had to talk to the TARDIS herself.
Yaz walked circles around the console and tried not to feel the Doctor's eyes on her back as she moved dials and switches and set course for home, really, truly home.
Finally, the TARDIS took off. "Yes," Yaz cheered quietly—she couldn't help turning to see if the Doctor was watching her.
Her eyes shining, the Doctor smiled, then winced as a wave of energy racked through her. Yaz rushed to her—she knelt before the Doctor and the Doctor looked away.
Hands shaking, Yaz took her bag from the other side of the staircase, took out a tissue and started cleaning the Doctor's hands. Her fingers were hot, feverish with golden light; Yaz could have burnt herself but she still couldn't let go. She let the tissue drop and held the Doctor's hands, glowing palms in hers, insecure and trembling all the same.
She wanted to hold her but a hug would mean goodbye. She wanted to kiss her but a kiss would mean I am owed, would mean a farewell present. Tomorrow, Yaz would wake up in her bedroom, and for the rest of her life she would half expect the TARDIS to appear in front of her building when she left for work in the morning.
She looked up at the Doctor with the best smile she could manage and the Doctor smiled back, tears rolling down her face.
And with a final clunk, the TARDIS landed.
