It becomes a daily bit on the school news: they put Peter in the cheapest, most ridiculous Spider-Man mask imaginable and get him to say wild stuff, whatever Midtown students can think of. Like that bit at the end of Honest Trailers.

(Peter may or may not go slightly viral saying some Stuff about the Rogue Avengers in his "Spider-Man voice." Tony may or may not nearly piss himself laughing about it when he finds out.

I'm rereading the Lymond Chronicles right now and, as a lover of twisty, strategic bastards, I have to say that Dunnett understands things about how to write them properly that few others do. Everything that happens in these books lands in a very heavy, physical way - like, you can almost feel the physical thunk as events land, whereas most other twisty bastards books feel like floaty CGI whose physicality you're never really fully buying, fun as the special effects are.

So I tried to do a little analysis as to why, because I live for a twisty strategic bastard narrative :)

Lymond has a personality and is driven by his emotions, despite his cleverness and chessmaster tendencies - he doesn't do everything out of strategic consideration, and you can clearly see his fault lines from the start - glimpses of suppressed emotion, flaws that may be his undoing, irrational choices that clearly fulfill a psychological purpose but not a strategic one. Everyone is allowed to be pathetic and annoying and unlikeable. And all this is allowed to shape the plot - sometimes the character will be allowed emotions and a personality but not where it impacts the plot, so you will get a sort of a parallel lines thing where there's an "emotion" plot where the character is perhaps allowed to be flawed and show off their personality, and which perhaps impacts their interpersonal relationships, and a "competence" plot where the character always performs near-flawlessly and their emotions never enter into the game, and never the twain shall meet. No matter how controlled and self-possessed someone is, it strains my credulity when a person is portrayed as someone in possession of major personal flaws or psychological anguish, and yet this is never allowed to spill over into the way they interact with the "competence" plot or derail them in any way. Especially if they are portrayed as someone suppressing everything for efficiency's sake - they are going to crack at some point, and the stitches are going to burst open like a shaken bottle of soda with innards flying everywhere and hitting everyone around them, and if they're not, you're clearly not putting your character under enough pressure. Which makes for a boring story. The fact that Lymond is 100% human 100% of the time actually makes him look more competent and impressive, not less.

He is allowed to fail, because flaws are human and failure is human. The more convoluted a plan the more possible points of failure it has, and this is especially the case if large chunks of it rely on understanding and manipulating human beings: humans are messy complex dynamic systems, like the weather, and are therefore difficult if not impossible to predict to that degree of granularity. Lymond is allowed to misjudge Scott, for example, he is allowed to have his convoluted plans go wrong, and this is allowed to derail him: sometimes he bounces back, yes, but he is not constantly failing upwards, and his failures do have unfixable consequences sometimes. If they never did, the narrative would become boring and void of tension and emotion. The fact that the difficulty of pulling off these plans is realistically portrayed through the inclusion of stochasticity makes me admire his capacity to pull them off as often as he does more and not less.

He is allowed to fail in a way that's his own fault - combining my previous two points, it's not always that circumstances have conspired in such a way that he couldn't possibly predict or influence it; his failures are often a consequence of his own flaws and his own psychological hangups and blind spots, and are therefore all the more pleasing to read about because they tie into the emotional and personal narrative of the books. (Though I do also love the narratives where the brilliant hero does everything right and yet is trapped in a set of shifting wider historical circumstances where whatever he does is doomed to fail eventually, like Bel Riose from the Foundation books or even Thrawn.)

Another important point is when he's allowed to fail - I read somewhere that a deux ex machina or a similar contrivance that kick starts the plot is more tolerable and less suspension of disbelief-breaking than one which resolves it at the climax, and I think that it's kind of the opposite with failures of twisty bastards? So many people writing them seem to adore the competence porn too much to let them fail at crucial moments - if they do fail, even if it checks all my previous points, it's at the beginning, so that they are then allowed to use their cleverness twist out of the situation - see Eugenides in Return of the Thief, whose stubbornness and jealousy loses him the support of his foreign allies, but who then manages to pull through despite it (and is then vindicated by them never having had the intention to help in the first place due to realpolitik considerations). Or Miles Vorkosigan in Memory - he has a lapse of judgement at the start, but he makes no further lapses of judgement, and even his emotional journey of depression and reexamining of his life (the series' high point of characterization complexity tbh) has absolutely no bearing on his efficient functioning within the plot itself.

Which brings me to, consider also the role that this failure has in the narrative - because unless you're writing something that's just hardcore sociological storytelling (again, like the Foundation), this is a story about individuals, and a climax with personal stakes is almost always more satisfying than a more impersonal one where the hero gets to show off his cleverness. When Lymond fails in The Game of Kings, it swerves the plot from a very mechanistic, spy-novel-esque intrigue of finding the right man and clearing his name, to a psychodrama that forces him to confront his brother and face his past emotionally, and that also airs all of Lymond's flaws and misconceptions and pent-up emotions, but also all of Richard's, because this is the driving force of the narrative and it's so much more satisfying to watch it unfold than it would have been to watch Lymond bounce back and execute everything with flawless mechanical accuracy. Compare this to the climaxes of most new canon Thrawn books, or most Vorkosigan books (the one big exception is Brother in Arms - actually the more Mark the book has, the likelier it is to have an emotion-driven denouement), or all of the Inda books, or all of the Gentleman Bastards books - at best they will put a loved one in danger or kill them off to generate personal stakes, but what does Thrawn's personality, for example, have to do with the resolution of the plot in his books? I love those books, but they don't land nearly as hard. Compare and contrast Tyrion's trial in ASOIAF - Tyrion is also a twisty bastard but the process of him defending himself and running away doesn't involve his wits - it involves confronting his father and brother, about whom he has massive emotional baggage.

Anyway the TL;DR is you should all read the Lymond Chronicles.

Really wasn’t expecting to ever see them again so it was a pleasant surprise! Bringing back Unity could have crossed the line into being too fan service-y but I think they were incorporated into the ongoing story of the Rick/Rick Prime saga nicely.

Summer and Rick’s interaction:

We haven’t gotten a lot of Summer this season so it’s nice to see her trying to reach out to her grandfather. Summer is probably the second smartest member of the Smith/Sanchez and made the connection pretty quickly that Unity was back and that Rick would be deep in his feels. I love seeing Summer’s empathetic side but it was also sad to see Rick shut her out in the guise of creating “boundaries.” He still has a long way to go.

The President becoming a hive mind in order to achieve an 100% approval rating:

Honestly, a politician enslaving the minds of his constituents in order to get unanimous approval is something that would happen in real life if they could. Absolutely realistic.

My Thoughts:

A couple of things come to mind:

First, I want to discuss my biggest problem with Auto Erotic Assimilation as an episode. The episode ends with a pretty moving scene of Rick attempting suicide after Unity breaks up with him. Iconic scene no doubt, but a scene I felt had poor justification. The reasoning being is that the only thing we ever really learn during that episode is that Rick and Unity like to fuck…a lot. And abuse substance…a lot. Frankly, the relationship struck me as being awfully shallow. This most recent episode, however, added some much needed substance that was previously lacking. We find out that Rick has confided in them about Rick Prime and possibly Diane and Beth. They were around for the disastrous aftermath of his previous attempt to hunt Rick Prime and when they find out Rick is going to attempt to go after him again goes to extreme lengths to get Rick’s attention and dissuade him from going through with it.

Now, I don’t really want to see Unity and Rick get back together and I do see this episode as a sort of resolution to this relationship. Two people may not be able to make a romantic relationship work but sometimes that can pave the way to something better. Maybe a friendship can form from this that is much more meaningful than a romance, when they’re ready. They both still care about each other that’s for sure, but Rick still has some work.

Secondly, I’ve seen some conversation that Dr. Wong was in the wrong to side with Unity and tell Rick he was squarely in the wrong. Rewatching the episode, in the scene before Dr. Wong and Rick confront Unity the two of them discuss how they are going to convince Unity to take over the President’s hivemind in order to restore everyone. In this discussion they say,

Rick: “So you need to convince [Unity] I’m worth it.”

Dr. Wong: “You aren’t”.

Rick: “So lie”.

A possible interpretation is that Dr. Wong took his advice and said what she thought would be necessary to bring order back to earth which meant placing the blame on Rick. It’s a thought. I don’t know if if clears anything up but that’s kinda how I see it.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode. It wasn’t nearly the fun romp we had with the second episode, but I appreciate a fresh insight into Rick and Unity’s relationship and I like to see Rick gradually warming up to therapy to the point that he values his relationship with Dr. Wong. She’s one of the few people not intimidated by him or afraid to call him out on his BS. Sometimes, finding a therapist that really clicks with you can be a monumental task so Rick got pretty lucky finding the perfect therapist on the first try.

See they may have left the military life behind them, but the made a fair amount of enemies. For awhile they were able to stay hidden, or soap and ghost were able to take care of them without Maizee noticing. And price helped them drop off the radar as best they could, but they wanted Maizee to have good life, not be isolated from the world.

Ghost, being legally dead, was sent on a lot of high risk missions that would follow him for a long time, maybe even to death. At the time it wasn't really a problem. At the time he was only The Ghost. At the time he was never supposed to make it out of the military. And then he did. With Soap.

And Soap? Well the military was his life, his career. He joined as soon as he could. That's a lot of time to make enemies. Especially since he was often volunteering to take on some of the most dangerous mission, volunteering to go with ghost, volunteering to go where Noone wanted to. It was easy enough to make enemies. Soap he's a bit of a realistic personality, optimistic? Sure. But he knows what not to hope for. He joined at a young age, had no real world civilian experience (like how to hold a job, go to events, ect), he often went on risky business. He knew there was a high likelihood of him not getting out of the military, and he was fine with that. And then he did. With Ghost.

The bounties on their heads were easy enough to take care of and live with, for the few year they lived in retirement before Maizee. They knew how to take care of themselves, they knew they had eachother's backs. It was the same as before, except now they didn't have to wake up at tue ass crack of dawn, and they can make pancakes for eachother at 11 o'clock in the morning.

Then they adopted Maizee, and it was good, they were good. Happy. But the bounties hitched up a notch. People thinking it'd be easier to get them. They think maybe they could use the kid to get to the two men, right? Wrong. Soap and ghost are both extremely protective of their kid, as it turns out. After a while the hunters stop coming as much, only the eager and inexperienced ones go after them now. They've become the John Wick(s?) Of the bounty hunting world. It's two fold, three, really.

See if you get them both there is a 88%... 73.4%... ok like 52.33% chance of living with minimal long-lasting damage. They end up arguing in weather the hunter should live or not, bla bla bla, how would they go about doing it. Honestly good chances of life there, hope you get both and not just one.

Just ghost is maybe 30% chance of living. Either he kills the hunter or he doesn't. Simple as that. Nothing much to say. He's ruthless, sure, but merciful. Won't draw out a slow death, one bullet to the head, or at least as quick as he can make it. Or he'll break a few fingers and let them go, if he believes with 100% certainty that they won't touch his family ever again. If you jave to choose to go after one or the other, choose him.

Uhh... extreme gore (as ideas. I didn't describe them unless it was to clarify. But like... it's bad... you have been warned)

Because soap? Soap is scary. The chances of you living? 100% and you might think 'oh but isn't that better than being dead?' Oh, but you'd be so so terribly wrong about that. John Soap Mactavish can make living so terrifying you'd think death was a far off myth only for children to believe in naively. Soap is very much aware that more than half your bones are in just your hands and feet [thank you Hank Green for that terrifying fact] and he WILL go through the effort of breaking every single one of them. He will laugh in your face, as he runs the glacial edge of a (illegal) 3 bladed knife down your cheek. He'll take half of your fingers. Not five. Half. Take the second knuckle of all 10 fingers. He will peel the skin off your stomach, just the skin. Geneva convention? Try Geneva checklist. If he ever got held for his crimes they'd have to invent so so many new terms fo what he's done. And the worst part? He leaves you alive. Patches you up, makes sure you live, swears you to secrecy on threats of making is so much worse. And then at the end of the day, he washed the blood off his hands, his face, off his tongue. He changes into new cloths, burns his soiled ones. And then he goes home to his husband and his daughter with a smile on his face and takes the out for icecream and a walk in the park.

Ok the gore part is over now.

I assume after the bounties come in less and less they grow more lax about watching for them. At some point it's been years since they've had an attack, right. Maizee is almost all grown up, but of course she'll always need her dads :)

I expect that after so much time the number on their heads has racked up to the trillions... each. Plus a bonus for "the kid". And well greed is.. a hellva drug, ain't it?

A group snatched 19 yo Maizee up, knowing her dads would come after them. They of course have heard the stories, but often times they are just that. Stories. Tales to scare disobedient children into submission. (They will find out that they are just stories... because the reality is so much worse) *clears throat* uh anyways...

Before her soap or ghost can reach her she she snatches the gun out of one of their hands and fires two shots into tone of their chests and one into the other. She- she's never killed anyone before... ghost and soap rush up the stairwell faster at the sound of gunshots.

She's breathing heavily, starting to panic. Ghost is quick to assure her.

"No. No. You didn't kill anybody. " he gently takes the gun from her hands. Then he tightens his hand around the grip of the gun, and fires two more shots into the brain of the guy behind him. "See? You didn't kill him, I did." He says gently. "You did what you had to, to protect yourself."

She begins to calm down, collapses into his chest. And he holds her. Behind them, he can hear soap give the second guy an insurance bullet to the head, then drab both bodies down the stairs.

They go home. Ghost agrees, after much begging from soap himself, to let soap take care of the rest. They estimate they have a few hours before the others come after them. It's already late, the three of them have a cup of hot cocoa. Then ghost goes to watch whatever movie Maizee wants to watch, in her room. T.V. cranked up loud enough to drown out any other sound that might have been heard from outside the room.

Soap takes a seat outside on the porch steps. A cup of coffee with a shot of burbon in one hand, a shotgun in the other. It's loaded with 2 shots of of birdshot. 3 more shell lined up neatly on either side of him. And he waits.

The rest of the bounty group shows up. Walking arrogantly up his driveway. He takes another sip of coffee, then sets his cup down beside him. For once (not really, but you get it) he's the one shrouded in shadow, not ghost. He notes idly that he never sees women coming after him anymore, must have more common sense than the testosterone filled man-babies before him.

He waits. Let them get close. Then racks the weapon. The four guys jump at the sound that seems to echo endlessly through the night air. He doesn't worry about the sound reaching his daughter as he fires one shot center mass on the guys on the left, and the second to the guys on the right. They stagger back as he reloads and reracks. Eight shot may have been overkill he thinks, emptying the two shots again. They go down. He zip-cuffs them and loads them into the back of his old dodge charger.

He sits back on the porch to finish his coffee. Takes his empty cup and the rest of the shells inside. The gun and ammo goes back into storage, cup gets washed and set on the drying rack. He knocks lightly on the door as he opens it, they're still watching the movie they put on.

"Hey. I have to go out for a bit, I'll be back in the morning." He says softly, so as not to disturb them. Ghost nods his head, and maizee reaches up for a hug. Of course he gives it to her.

Then he gets in the car and peels out of the driveway. He makes one stop at a drive-thru to get a cup of black coffee, with a quad shot... and a cake pop. "You boys want anything?" They don't answer "nah, didn't think so."

There's an empty warehouse he privately owns, on the "empty" side of town (yes, ghost knows about it). On the official records it's empty-ish, it's mostly squatters and shaders here. They're mostly good people, who got dealt a bad hand in life, and the reality is that life tries to compound bad luck. He knows some guys that keep his building clear, clean, in exchange for getting to sleep there when he's not using it, he leaves them some non-perishables when he can.

He unlocks the door, rolls his car in. A few clangs on one of the metal supports wakes his guys, they leave without complaint, he thanks them as they go. They know the deal, one night then they get it back.

He unloads the guys, sits them in chairs. He checks the food and water before he does anything else, notes what he needs to restock. It's his routine. Then he sets to work.

He gets back home with an empty car in the early morning, not quite the wee hours but pretty close to it. He'll go out to the store tomorrow for groceries.

He makes breakfast then puts the food in the oven to wait. Ghost and Maizee won't be up for a few hours yet, so he gets to go wrap his clean arms around them and sleep for a bit.

I am absolutely stuck on the dynamic between Brighid, Arthur, Alfred, and Jack rn. They're both Arthur's sons, but Jack was hers to raise first and she contributed to Alfred's upbringing too, and they may as well be hers with all the people they're getting from her, and that's happening because of Arthur's policies. And Arthur, for his part, parents them based on vague memories of his mother - but you've said a lot of those are actually Brighid.

Point of all that being, would you mind expanding on the early part of Arthur and Brighid's relationship, before he became a colonizing shithead? What are these memories with her that he's attributing to their mother? How did that relationship influence his parenting (both the things that he's aware were Brighid and the things that he thinks were mum but were actually Brighid?)

Okay so just to preface this so no one starts reading this like they do my more modern things where I can usually have a basis in fairly accepted and confirmable fact, we’re going so far back that not only is this not chronologically accurate, its only archaeologically plausible. This is the literary version of saying, "it's for ceremonial purposes” on the label of an artefact anyone with courage would call a prehistoric bong. There’s a big trend for “History of X in 100 Objects” right now. In my personal collection is a 'History of Ireland in 100 objects.' I’m not saying this is accurate or realistic. However, it is based on historical themes that lend themselves to what is ultimately a historical fantasy as plausible as I can write it. That said, let's crack this can of fuckery.

So, to start out, this is all pre-1066, which is when, after the Norman invasions of England, Wales, and and Southern Scotland, the history of the British in Ireland begins. Before that, we’re talking about a world where Irish raiders are a menace on the Welsh coast, and the Dál Riada is the result of an Irish migration, where the peoples on the Irish Coast brought Gaelic culture and eventually merged with and overtook the Pictish culture already occupying the area. The balance of power is very different in this world. This is not the 18th and 19th century when Brighid is firmly under the heel of a British jackboot and even when the British government was willing to concede slightly on empire, the British army nearly revolted when it was even considered to maybe, perhaps, rein in unionist violence in nineteen-fourteen just months shy of WW1. Winston Churchill was also behind that, in case you need more reasons why he's an allmighty cunt.

I give them all Celtic roots. Brighid is probably 300-500 years older than Alasdair, and then political solidification in Wales brought Rhys along and then Arthur as the reorganization of Celtic Britons in Roman Britain. This might be a hot take, but while the Anglo-Saxon ‘invasion’ in the 400s-500s brought Germanic rule and language to England, the Cumbrians and other Celts were not wiped out. Mostly it's a cultural shift. So he’s born as much a Celt as his siblings and experiences dramatic changes earlier in his life than they do. However, if you get to the root of English culture under all of the bullshit of empire and all the German royalty who built up their legitimacy by reviving Anglo-Saxon memory, history has more Celtic elements than someone might think.

In Northern England, Southern Scotland, Eastern Ireland, and the maritime fringes of Wales, there was an Iron Age tribe by the name of the Brigantes, whose name was taken from the northern goddess Brigantia, which means either ‘the exalted’ or ‘highlanders.’ Either way works for me because it is the root word of Brighid’s name, the Welsh word for prestige, honour, dignity and power, all things connected to fire, power and elevation. As all modern knowledge of her comes from 8 inscriptions and some statuary material, and her name is so goddamn appropriate, I’m running with it. It’s so close to Brittania. According to Strabo, writing about a now-lost account of a Greek sailor and explorer Pytheas, it comes from a feminine name likely from the Celts itself.

In the tradition of Catholic patron saints of specific places, Brigantia seems to have been a goddess associated with lakes, rivers, and coastlines. Saint Brighid, from the same name base, is the patron saint of Ireland, bastard children, babies, children, midwives, sailors and poets. Me, hitting a bong in 2021; yeah, that sounds like mother and daughter to me. Eirian, whose name is a version of the Welsh name for King Arthur’s mother because I’m ✨original✨ ruled her own kingdom directly. She was a queen regnant in a culture that saw that crop up often. She was a product of the Iron Age, a warrior culture where swords and a hierarchy of militancy ruled society. Brighid was her firstborn child, and very much her mother’s daughter, sharing that long, beautiful hibernian gold (think rose gold) hair down to her waist. She was tall and gorgeous, with a head for politics as well as martial talent, but Eirian was as much a goddess of the hearth as the sea and war; she still took her tributes in blood, and treasure. She ruled directly with iron and faith.

Brighid, however, while just as capable of that, had a personality that found early Christianity very appealing. It’s hard for us to imagine now, but 1,500-2,000 years ago, Christianity was, in many ways, a much gentler religion than some flavours of what we now call paganism. And while just as capable at every aspect of ruling as her mother, I do think Brighid has aspects to her personality that were kinder, a bit softer. She was an artist in the scriptoriums, a weaver, all these things in her golden age. And she was grown, or near it, by the time Arthur came along. And the gentlest things he remembers about his mother are usually Brighid. An image of a woman weaving, red hair pouring down her back as her fingers fly over the shuttle and her feet work the treadles. That is Brighid. Another of a woman’s elegant and quick fingers on the spindle, fitting the handle into a clumsy child’s hands, laughing when he gets frustrated. Also Brighid. Picking him up and giving him a raspberry even when he kicks to be let down because he wants to run everywhere, is also Brighid. Teaching him to put his knife into the kidney because he’s young, and that's the highest he can reach? That’s his mother. The two images, his powerful mother and his bright sister swirl together when Arthur gets into a strange mood.

He'll yammer away in Cumbrian and hum the tune of the songs who's words he cant remember. When she died in the 5th or 6th century, they scattered as their various regions expanded and solidified linguistically as Common Bythronic became Welsh, Gaelic, and Cumbrian (Scotland’s native Celtic language is actually extinct, replaced by Irish Gaelic in late antiquity.) England imploded under the pressure of the Germanic migrations, so I picture Arthur kind of wandering through his numerous kingdoms most of the year. Brighid may have, too. It was common for high-status people to go on progress and stay with the nobility from time to time in various European societies. However, I can also see her with her own mini-kingdom inside the Gaelic system of ranking kings, over kings and high kings. Arthur would usually spend the winter with one of his siblings. Usually Rhys, but he would have been welcome with Brighid for a long time, even as the wee cuckoo, half-German bastard that he was. He may have even lived with her for long periods. But once, she was power, and once she loved him and once he wasn't the cause of all the horror of her years. It was a different world before the Vikings came.

It’s a delight to watch their priorities slowly switch more and more towards each other despite both of them not wanting this/being terrified of it on a conscious level (because she’s a woman who guards her heart as she knows marriage can never be equal and he guards his because warlords who get weak over women don’t last long) and that the issue of her family is not resolved - it is so realistic to me that even as he falls for her and acknowledges it to himself he still hates her family - I mean her grandfather purposefully did not send reinforcements so his father and older brother would die in battle leaving him a 10 year old with a grandmother trying to hold the fief together long enough until he grows up enough to fight. Like - the fact that he’s decided he won’t actively murder her family is a big deal enough. But I love that she refuses to give up her family who except for her uncle who was meh were universally loving and good to her. And fed up with always having to cater to him makes it blunt precipitating their biggest fight. I super love that they eventually make up but still this matter remains unresolved, they just stop mentioning it. It feels realistic.

I also love that what precipitated her opening her heart is when he got wounded and sick. Because I think this is the first time she truly GETS that he’s human. Because he’s so competent and also from her past go around she knows at least nothing is supposed to happen to him until he overthrows the dynasty. So she’s been treating it all as eh whatever. But she is confronted with him wounded with a poison arrow and while his life is not in danger, it forces her to realize that (a) yes he is flesh and blood and can be hurt too (b) past go around is no guarantee of safety or same outcome in this.

Because this novel loves its sex scenes, I am still cracking up at his “wanna bang!” “No you are wounded that may make it worse!” “Well then you can get on top” thing ahahahh. I am mildly surprised she is not pregnant yet but I guess they do keep separating for long periods of time and the novel does explicitly addresses that she tries to minimize chances of pregnancy both because she wants to be older and because her heart being guarded she’s not sure she wants to give him a child.

We see that ugh wannabe rapist dude back. I thought he was killed but looking back all Wei Shao ordered was to chop off his dick and stuff it into his mouth. That is another thing not making it into the drama 😝

PS I peeked at the end mainly because of Da Qiao X Bi Zhu who remain my babies and I love that the horse slave became a nobleman with a giant army guarding his border fief and is still a wife-devoted guy who doesn’t just adore Da Qiao but is permanently grateful that a high lord’s daughter ran off with him instead of a very fancy marriage, when he was a literal slave. I love that Da Qiao’s insane on a practical level decision taken purely out of love turned out so epically good on a pragmatic level. She ends up being legal (and only) wife of a super powerful warlord who worships the ground she walks on. Go, Da Qiao!

it is waaaayyy too late in the night for me to be staying up and drafting cracked theories about where wavelength gets his powers from and why it's an organic fusion reactor that naturally grows in his intervertebral discs that powers his suits and why he has needles in his back

he's basically a walking battery, generating energy at all times because of the reactions going on in his spine. unarmored, it's useless, unless given means to channel and redirect the energy (the wavelength suit, the needles in his lumbar vertebrae)

because fusion reactors generate *so* much fucking heat (150 million degrees CELSIUS so just suspend some disbelief with scifi bear with me) it may be possible that mark does not actually suffer the drawbacks of being cold blooded (as he is now part reptile)

reptiles, lizards, are cold blooded animals, which means they cannot generate their own body heat and need to seek out external heat sources. however, with the fusion reactor theory, he might actually be just fine and create his own body heat thru unorthodox ways

Honestly, I completely loved this. So intricate, so well written, so realistic - it tugs at the heartstrings and sweeps you up into it entirely.

So based on your assumptions, Taishiro will never be confirmed canon? :( I believe they won't miss the opportunity to hint at a few ships like they did before. Who from the cast do you feel would be the most likely partner for Koushiro?

Well... Deep down inside I want to agree with you and say that they could choose to at least... Hint at something. But as much as I'd wish for them to go all progressive in the year 2023 and confirm their absolute main character and de-facto face of the franchise as not-100%-straight... I really think it's not very realistic, unfortunately. A girl can dream of course, but... Gotta wait and see.

As for Koushirou... I am torn. Not because I think that Taishirou is inherently plausible in itself and would make sense in the grand scheme of things because I totally do think that, but because they KNOW how it is perceived when they go official in ANY direction. Hints and nudging? Oh yeah, they're pretty prone to doing that - but judging by everything we've seen recently, it really seems like they'd be very willing to... De-canonize Tri to at least some degree. Of course that is just a theory, but I still think they'll go very, VERY careful paths here.

Aside from me considering Taichi to be a plausible partner in general due to them being "best friends to literal coworkers", growing as close as they used to, making up for lost time and maybe discovering one thing or another on their way... I think it's no surprise that Mimi appears to be the most likely choice. Again, I'm taking Tri (and "the crush") with a grain of salt there, but Kizuna('s promo art)/To Sora hinted at them being fairly close/communicative too! Although we cannot tell how far it goes at this point in time, who feels what, how much of it is business related, etc., they canonically ARE in touch and thus have the same potential-set-up as Taishirou - and they were depicted next to each other in the infamous epilogue line-up. However - there was not just Mimi...

... Since there is another frame there where he stands very close to Hikari. Not over-analyzing anything here, especially because canon has never shown them to be particularly close on an emotional level - from a set-up level I'd say it WOULD make sense (with her being his best friend's sister, so technically they SHOULD be closer).

But as you can tell, we are already going very far into speculation territory here, since there aren't a lot of characters he is exceptionally (emotionally) close with. Honourable mentions here may go to Takeru and Iori (since the former seems to be very well informed about everything Koushirou is up to these days and the latter always looked up to him), but again, there is not a lot to back this up with.

(Honourable-honourable mention - in a crack-ship kinda way - is Sora to me. Because in a universe in which Taiyama became a thing, I still consider them to be valid contenders to grow significantly closer, but the evidence I have collected for that is very thin and everything beyond that goes into headcanon spaces.)

Alright we're at 2/3 for the villain hero student plots, given how the dabi and toga ones have gone how do you feel about the shigaraki one? Like from everything we've seen so far, with dabi toga and the mutant type quirk Havers, how do you realistically think this last ones gonna go?

Oh don’t ask me about what I realistically expect; because I’m not expecting much good or interesting to talk about if we're taking Dabi & Toga’s conclusions at face value.

I much prefer to think about the possibilities in our expectations being subverted with sudden twists and challenges. How this or that forgotten plot element could suddenly come into focus in an unexpected way. And indeed how the villain plots we think just got concluded could be reignited to challenge our heroes some more. That's where the fun predictions come from.

Still, I should probably give proper answer, shouldn't I; even if my answer is a fairly dull way for things to go. But to bum less people out with my negativity, I'm putting it under a cut.

Anyway a realistic prediction based on how Dabi & Toga's plots ended would probably something along the lines of pinning everything wrong with Tomura on his daddy issues and/or AFO to sidestep any way that the hero society that All Might built contributed to his fall to villainy; in general treating him as a unique case instead of anything systemic Deku needs to worry about, or at least that he'd need to change & do differently from his predecessors. Thus allowing Deku to save Tenko while still moving forward as nothing more complicated than an All Might 2.0.

(Deku then faces 2 or 3 more Leagues of Villains in his career; formed from falling through the same cracks, and with the same motives as our League. And then in 70~100 years humanity goes extinct because of the Quirk Singularity. All of which being preventable, but not by the heroes the kids have been ending their arcs as.)

Also AFO may or may not make it to the Deku v Shigaraki fight to be blamed for everything wrong in the world in person. It wouldn't really matter, he doesn't need to be there for that; so it just depends on if Hori wants Deku to beat his face in (again, but also for the 1st time), or if he wants All Might to 3-0 him. Or maybe if Horikoshi wants to be efficient, he might just Warp one fight's combatants straight to the other fight; convert 'um into a 2V2 (or rather a 2V1V1) to get both of those plots over quick...Actually, that last idea sounds interesting; I may use that for my fun predictions.

Well anyway yeah, that's my realistic expectations based on what we’ve been getting. It’s not much fun to think about, and I don't actually like being this much a downer. But there you go.

Last Dragon Chronicles by Chris D'Lacey: A children's series, but anything that's wrong with me can be blamed directly on this children's series. It begins when the protagonist, David Rain, moves into his new landlady's house so he can go to college. Said landlady, Elizabeth Pennykettle, makes clay dragons, each of which have a special talent. David receives a dragon which inspires him to write, so he decides to write a cute story about squirrels for his landlady's daughter. Then it starts to become apparent that his story is either manipulating or predicting the future. And also the dragons may or may not be alive. Among other things.

It gets crazier from there. The first book could easily be realistic fiction with some very ambiguous supernatural elements, but by the last book, time travel and alternate universes are both in play.

(Books, in order, were The Fire Within, Icefire, Fire Star, The Fire Eternal, Dark Fire, Fire World, and The Fire Ascending, if I recall correctly.)

i've actually read the Redshirts! absolutely loved it, will 100% recommend it to anyone interested in either Star Trek, metafiction, or crack treated seriously, its fantastic! i've read it multiple times over at this point and it still means so much to me <3

watched the first two eps of "The Haunting of Bly Manor" with my gf. surprised by how much I like the characters, they are really three-dimensional. the main character is in equal parts outspoken and fragile, she didn't shy away from being frank with the kids uncle but she obviously has her own struggles with panic attacks etc.

And the boy, I wonder if he's possessed? Possibly the demon/creature sprang over from the former governess or she sacrificed herself for them. Might explain Miles question in the school lesson, if demons need permission to enter men (yes), his curious strength and weird behaviour towards the protagonist. What does he mean with the talk about needing to find keys though? Keys to what? And how does the emphasis on the innocence of animals fit into this? Why do the children leave at midnight to the lake (I'm assuming).

Why does the former governesses boyfriend turn up? Was he possessed as well (and has passed it onto her, driving her to suicide)? Is Owens remark that people are born and die in Bly relevant?

Anyway, I'm quite excited for the next episode.

saw "much ado about nothing" at the globe today. one of these experiences making me wish I had photographic memory in order to go over every moment again and again. the scenery showing a villa in post-war italy. the wonderful period-appropriate costumes (and Beatrice was the only one of the women wearing pants! very fitting). the hilarious physical comedy - while eavesdropping, Beatrice got tangled in a sort tennis net, then stepped onto the sprinkler on the lawn. The whole theatre was laughing. They also constantly involved the audience, like looking at someone in the audience during the "one woman is fair, yet I am well" monologue.

I also stood during the whole performance, having chosen the cheapest tickets, meaning I was mich closer to the actors and it made for a wholly different interaction with the crowd, it was so immersive. and the actress playing beatrice was so attractive. certainly helped keep my eyes on the stage

one thing I like about "Tender is the Flesh" is how it's not a perfect dystopia. The systems has cracks showing, people are sometimes more, sometimes less aware of the inhumanity of this. Not everyone is 100% on board, 100% brainwashed, no matter what the media tries to instill in people. Think of the job applicant getting sick when seeing the slaughtering process for example.

That's what draws you in though, that's the terrifying aspect of it. This world seems so realistic and natural, it's not comfortingly distant from our own reality. And even "good" people, normal people who sort of recognize the atrocity of it, participate in the system because they need to.
