"There's also a statue on Cyprus that's bearded, shaped and dressed like a woman, with a scepter and male genitals, and they conceive her as both male and female. Aristophanes called her Aphroditos, and Laevius says: "Worshipping, then, the nurturing god Venus, whether she is female or male, just as the Night-Shiner is a nurturing goddess." In his Atthis Philochorus, too, states that she is also the moon and that men sacrifice to her in women's dress, women in men's, because she is held to be male and female."
— Saturnalia: Books 3-5, Volume 2, by Ambrosius Aurelius Theodosius Macrobius, edited and translated by Robert A. Kaster

So.... Made this because some anon was being a bit rude about "why is Leo trans in your AU?" soo...
Anyways, TD!Leo/Trainee, the He/They/Xe of the day :)

You don't need to know all the flags, let me just clarify stuff about Trainee:
Transmasc, mostly agender but still a little masc-aligned on the side. Uses both masculine and neutral terms interchangeably with no pref. Gender-nonconforming, doesn't have physical dysphoria. Asexual and demiromantic, knows he's at least into guys.
This stuff won't be brought up too much in the comic, but I write it with this in mind.

Ares and Aphroditus are my patron gods for my transition. Ares gives me the courage and inspiration to do what I need to even if it's scary, and he inspires me to fight against what holds me back. Aphroditus gives me a divine mirror to look to, an icon of hope, a god just like me. Being transgender is holy and good and the gods have our backs.
Hail Ares, god of trans men.
Hail Aphroditus, god of all trans poeple.

trans paganism:
when I do my testosterone gel, I write “HADES” in large letters in the gel with my finger while saying “I make my SELF in YOUR image”.
it works as an offering, a spell, and just a fun thing where I think Hades gets a chuckle out of the turning of that phrase. also helps me relieve a little bit of that leftover religious trauma.

My AP environmental class had a slideshow vaguely mentioning old-timey healing stuff including herbs and how people used to use them as medicine.
Teacher: … actually, most of the “witches” that have been killed throughout history were likely just healers.
Classmate I’m vaguely familiar with: Do you think witches are real, Mr. [name]? Me: well, I’m right here, so.
complete silence in the classroom for a second while everyone absorbs that
Teacher: Well, there you go! :D

One of the oldest goddesses in the historical record is Inanna of Mesopotamia, who was referred to, among other honorifics, as “She who makes a woman into a man, she who makes a man into a woman.” The power to alter such fundamental categories was evidence of her divine power. Inanna was served by at least half a dozen different types of transgendered priests, and one of her festivals apparently included a public celebration in which men and women exchanged garments. The memory of a liminal third-gender status has been lost, not only in countries dominated by Christian ideology, but also in many circles dedicated to the modern revival of goddess worship. Images of the divine feminine tend to appear alone, in Dianic rites, surrounded only by other women, or the goddess is represented with a male consort, often one with horns and an erect phallus. But it is equally valid to see her as a fag hag and a tranny chaser, attended by men who have sex with other men and people who are, in modern terms, transgendered or intersexed.

the extremely transgender pagan moment when you’re working out as a devotion to The Morrigan and then I’ll Make A Man Out Of You comes on and as you go you start sobbing + grinning out of sheer exhilaration and love and pride and the feeling of being watched + held + guided through this journey by such an amazing force and you look crazy but you don’t care because you know you can do anything with Her on your side and She’s SO on your side

I definitely feel like I’m being asked to journal as an act of devotion to Psyche, but??? How???
Maybe this is what she means when she keeps telling me to “let go.” There doesn’t need to be a “how”. I can just start journaling.

Glory be to Apollon,
Bringer of light
Illuminating the eyes of my beloved and mine.
Praise the Lord of the bright
Days where I lie out to soak in his affection.
May he watch over my life and
Bless our lustrous love of the ages.
