Accidental Child Acquisition?

Summary: Ted has a surprise for Jack, it’s not what he expects, and brings some old discussions about their relationship back to the surface.

When Ted had told Jack that he had a surprise for him, he had expected many things. A child was not one of them. And yet there she sat on the ground, a girl a little over eight-years-old with curly blonde hair and a dirty dress, playing a little tea party with Ted. “More tea, Mr. Ted?” She giggled, grabbing one of Ted’s tea pots from the tree stump they were using as a table.

Ted grabbed his white board, showing it to her, “Yes.”

She moved the pot over his cup, pretending to pour its contents into it. It was then that she seemed to take notice of Jack, “Oh, hi! Are you Mr. Jack?”

Jack grinned, “Yes I am, how’d you guess?”

She smiled, “Mr. Ted told me a lot about you. You sound like his best friend.” Jack chuckled, “Well, a bit more than that.”

Her eyes widened, “His very best friend?”

“Sure,” Jack responded. “You know Ms.-”

“Heather!” The girl interjected. “Heather. Mr. Ted called me over, and I would like to talk with him for a moment,” he looked to his partner, “right Mr. Ted?” 

Ted nodded, grumbling.

Heather smiled, “Sure. But could you please be quick, Mr. Ted’s tea could get cold.” Jack grinned, “Sure, we’ll try to be.” He led Ted back into the hut, sliding the bark over the opening when they got inside, “Ted, what is going on?”

Ted groaned.

“Car crash? You found her there?” Jack inquired, remembering hearing about a particularly bad car crash in the news a few days ago. It had crashed into the Everglades, and all the passengers, a family, were found dead, all except for the youngest daughter, who was nowhere to be found.

Ted gave a grumble. 

“So you found her and took care of her? Ted, you should have called me sooner, we need to get her back to whatever family she still has.”

Ted groaned in response.

Jack noticed the sadness in his other half’s voice, “Teddy Bear, what’s wrong?”

Ted gave a low grumble, with the faint undertones of a long, drawn-out whine.

“Oh,” Jack had completely forgotten about that, he remembered Ted mentioning it in passing when talking about how he became what he is now, but it just kind of slipped under all the other information Ted had told him. But now he remembered it, and could see why Ted was so attached to Heather. Aside from the fact that not many people, let alone a child saw him with anything other than fear, Ted had told him that Ellen was pregnant with their son when he was transformed. He would be fourteen by now, fourteen years without Ted in his life because of Ellen’s actions. He knew Ted missed so many things about being human, but losing his family and friends because of what happened? Jack knew it was the thing Ted missed most of all.

The two of them had discussed kids once, on the off chance that society would at some point stop seeing them as monsters, but it had come to a rather… depressing realization. Ted couldn’t die, and Jack aged slower than a regular person, so if they were to adopt, then odds were they were going to outlive their child. Even then, if Jack donated some genetic material to have a biological child, then his condition would be passed on to them, and in truth, he didn’t want them to have to live with what he did. He couldn’t blame Ted for taking her in and wanting her to stay with them, not after everything he’s lost.

Jack sighed, “All right, she can stay here a bit longer, but you have to promise me that I get to take her back to the police or something, okay?”

Ted’s tendrils shifted to imitate a grin, and he gave a happy trill.

“Yeah, yeah, now don’t say I don’t do anything for you amor,” Jack snickered as he and Ted exited the hut.

Jack spotted Heather playing with a plush, patchwork rabbit, smiling when she spotted him and Ted approaching, “You’re back!”

Jack smiled, sitting down at the tree stump with Ted, “Mind if I join in?”

She smiled, moving a spare cup in front of him, “Not at all Mr. Jack!” She pretended to pour him some tea, grinning all the while.

He pretended to take a sip, “Delicious!”

It went on like that for a while, until the crescent moon hung low in the sky. Finally, Jack asked a question that had been gnawing on him the entire time, “You’re not scared of him?”

Heather gave him a sad look, “Not when he found me, I was too busy being sad.”

Jack gave a small nod, “I heard about what happened to your family. I’m truly sorry.” He spotted a few tears rolling down her cheeks, “There are people looking for you, they’re really worried. I can take you to them, if you want.”

She looked up at him, “Really.”

Ted stood up, writing on the whiteboard, before showing it to her, “Yes.”

“The rest of your family, they’re so worried about you. They really hope you’re okay,” Jack continued.

She looked at Ted, “But what about Mr. Ted? He’ll be so lonely.”

Jack gave a small smile, “Trust me, Mr. Ted has a lot of friends. I visit him all the time.”

She looked at Ted and then back at Jack, “Well, okay, I guess.”

Ted wrote on the whiteboard once more, showing it to Heather before patting her on the head, “Goodbye, Heather.”

Heather hugged Ted’s leg, trying in vain to wrap her arms around it, “Goodbye Mr. Ted. Thanks for everything, I’ll miss you.”

Carefully, Ted plucked a single blue flower from his skin, delicately placing it in Heather’s hair.

Jack stood there for a while until Heather pulled away, “Are you ready?”

Heather fiddled with the flower before smiling, lifting her rabbit up to her face, “Now I am, Mr. Jack!”

Jack grinned, “Alrighty then.” He extended his hand, which Heather promptly grabbed. He turned around, Heather at his side as Ted watched them leave, a single tear of sap leaking from his crimson eyes.

Jack returned the next day, and was immediately questioned by Ted about Heather, “She’s fine, her aunts and uncles were relieved to see her.”

Ted grumbled.

Jack nodded, “She’s safe, yes.”

Ted gave a low groan from where he sat on one of the logs littering the outside of the hut.

Jack sat down next to him, placing his hand on Ted’s massive one, “I know you cared about her, but she needed to be back with her family.”

Ted groaned again.

Jack squeezed his boyfriend’s hand, “Don’t say that, you rescued her! Who knows what might have happened if you hadn’t found her.”

Ted gave a surprised grumble.

“Yeah, really. You took excellent care of her from what people were saying, you’re the real hero here,” Jack replied, smiling at Ted.

Ted gave a trill.

Jack laughed, “ She obviously cared about you too. You would make a great dad, Ted.”

Ted gave a sad groan.

Jack shook his head, “I know what I said earlier, about us having kids. I know it would be hard, but maybe, someday, we can have one without having to worry about outliving them or passing on a curse to them. You know?”

Ted slipped his hand out from under Jack’s before placing it on his. He grumbled.

Jack smiled, “Yeah, it would be.”

For a while, they sat there, just the two of them, for now anyway.

After the fight with Scott in the rain, after Stiles nearly gave into the overwhelming impulse to throw that damned wrench at Scott's head, Stiles knows he can't stay in Beacon Hills. He doesn't have a pack now, and if he tells Dad he'll no longer have a parent. So Stiles leaves. He gets as far as the Jeep will take him and then he walks a little farther.

Away from home, from everyone he knows, Stiles grapples with the lingering murderous and violent impulses that haunt him day and night and tries to survive while remaining invisible. But duct tape only holds things together for so long. It was never meant to be a permanent solution.

Can someone have a talk with my muse? I literally finished and posted a 20k+ chapter to a teen wolf fic yesterday and now I’ve got 5k written on a teen wolf one shot crossover with Jurassic World.

Like, yes, I binged the dino movies over the weekend due to the snow storm, but I did not need another thing to write. I’m trying to finish the first one.

Is anyone even interested in that kind of a crossover?

"What happened?"

Mini-Stiles opened his mouth but before any words came out he sensed a high-pitched vibration in the air.  It was like a rubber band pulled tight, then tighter and tighter.  It dug into his head, his chest.  Then it snapped.

Mini-Stiles whipped around toward the gyms.

Stiles was in trouble.

He didn't bother to say anything.  Mini-Stiles just ran, blindly following the magic in the air he knew belonged to his brother.

It wasn’t the first time that Wild burst into his bedroom and shook him awake. Last time he’d done it was because he’d made ‘the best blueberry pancake ever.’ The time before that, it had only been a small kitchen fire, and they were able to replace the toaster oven without Time noticing.

“Come on, this is an emergency!”

Twilight groaned as he sat up, the room swaying as he did. “What, what’s wrong?”

“Twilight we have a baby.”

Victor had to admit, that had been a pretty good save. It was a bit suspicious if you knew what to look for, but it seemed like it fooled the social worker. Or maybe she knew of their troublemaker reputation and just decided to not bother with it. Probably. She beckoned the Morgans over, trapping them close by putting a firm hand on each of their shoulders. Yeah, she definitely knew what was up.

"Boys, why don't you introduce yourselves to Mr. Smith here?", she squeezed their shoulders to drive the point home. Nathan couldn't hide a wince, while Samuel just rolled his eyes, batting her hand away.

"Yeah, whatever. I'm pretty sure the old man here already knows 'bout both our names. I mean, you were yelling around earlier".

"Well, I'm Nate, uh, Nathan. Nathan Morgan". The poor kid looked pretty uncomfortable. Well, that was his brother's fault, though.

"Yeah, no, I've got an old man's memory, you know. Please do tell me both your names, kids". Samuel seemed pretty annoyed at that. Good.

"Nice to meet you, Nathan. How about you, kid?"

Samuel just stayed silent for a moment too long, crossing his arms.

"Well?", Reed nudged him with an elbow.

He huffed, "Watch what you're doing with that arm, lady. You could have put a hole in my back acting like that, geez".

"Okay fine, it's Samuel. Happy now?"

She gave him a look.

"Very", she retorted.

Kid really didn't want to do any of this, huh. Brought this on himself, being a little shit like that.

"Very nice to meet you, kid", he jested.

"Uh-huh. Can't say the same, though".

Nathan, who had been pretty quiet during the whole thing, finally did a little pretend-slap-and glare routine at his brother, complete with a drawn-out whine of "Saaaaam!". It was kinda adorable, actually. Who was he kidding, it was really annoying. But the kid was like, 8, so it was probably normal, he guessed.

"Can we go now?", Samuel pointedly stared at Reed.

"Sure, you are dismissed. Just don't go set anything on fire or anything like that ".

"Sure thing, Miss Reed", Nathan gave his best mock salute before running after his brother, who was already somewhere in the very back of the courtyard.

Well, that was interesting, for lack of a better term.

"Well, now that you got to talk to the boys, shall we go to the administration office, Mr. Smith? We still have to discuss paperwork and some other details".

He mumbled some vague affirmative, following the woman inside. He still had to get his wallet back.

"Actually, can you point me to the bathroom? I'll come up to administration in a second".

The social worker didn't seem surprised, "Sure Mr., Smith, take your time".

Going for the scenic route, he actually went in the way of the bathrooms before circling back right to the courtyard. He found the Morgans perched on a tall tree.

"It was a nice lift back there. You boys are pretty good".

At that, both of them whirled around. Nathan almost fell right out of the tree.

"I dunno what you're talking about, old man", spat Samuel from his perch, his brother nodding along.

"Again, don't call me that. Your technique was actually pretty sloppy". He pointed at Samuel, "You couldn't come up with an engaging enough conversation, couldn't distract for shit", gesturing vaguely at Nathan, "And you were telegraphing all your moves".

The brothers exchanged astonished looks.

"Yeah? I guess you figured me an easy mark. But you kids picked the wrong guy".

"You're crazy", piped the younger boy.

Both of them looked ready to bail.

"Hey, before you get any ideas. My wallet".

They just stared.

"Fine, maybe I'll just call Reed to handle you. Maybe even one of the nuns — Sister Catherine seems to have taken a real shine on you two".

"Sure, do whatever you want, old man"

"But of course", completed Nathan, "Miss Reed could wonder what you're doing back here now that she already took you back inside".

They both dismissed him, Samuel with a sweep of a hand, Nathan with a half-hearted shrug.

Oh, it's on. "Well, you two sure are crafty little beggars, aren't you?"

"Anyways, I'm sure you don't wanna get caught in a mess just because of a misunderstanding, right Smith?", rebutted the eldest brother. "I assume you don't wanna get in trouble more than we do".

"Good point".

With a smirk, he turned back around, his brother following his example.

Nathan scoffed and tossed the wallet back down, while his brother just rolled his eyes and shook his head. As Victor left the courtyard, he could still see two little figures perched on the distant tree, swinging their feet around.

"Kid!" They barely glanced back, the little shits."The wallet".

Fortunately, Reed didn't insist on escorting him out, "trusting" him to know the way back out. Well more like she was busy with something and/or done with him, and couldn't be bothered.

He narrowly managed to get back inside and on route to the administration office before Reed came looking for him. He played it off as just a long bathroom break and gave his best half-baked excuse as to why he had to leave, right now, it was very urgent Miss Reed, the paperwork will have to wait.

While the visit hadn't been so good in terms of reconnaissance, he had found something (or someone) useful indeed.

Surely, that wouldn't be too hard.

The Morgan brothers were clumsy and untrained but had good instincts. Obviously, he did not want those boys to pursue it to a life of crime — he knew how that was, firsthand — he was sure he could negotiate to use their "talents" and knowledge of the place, work as scouts for him. He just had to figure out what those kids could possibly want in turn.

Okay, turns out it was a bitch getting any kind of clue from these boys. Just what he needed.

Out of the three times he tried to go back and talk to them, he only managed to get actually face to face with them once — and they bolted the second they recognized him (though it did look like it was Samuel who was calling the shots and dragging his brother around). While he wasn't as closely watched as the first visit — the social worker didn't really follow his every step anymore — the nuns sure were nosy. Nothing he couldn't handle, but it just wasn't worth the effort, getting them off his tail.

Another big problem was that he kept having to make up excuses not to go up to administration and those were getting worse by the second. At some point, maybe at the third visit, they got a hold of him long enough for the paperwork thing. At least the client had enough foresight — and money to throw around — to actually set up some kind of "backstory" along with the fake name. Thankfully, thanks to that Victor didn't get into trouble with the background check.

He was sure that if the kids could stay still and actually listen for once they'd consider his proposal, hell they might even enjoy it if pickpocketing random strangers was their idea of a fun afternoon.

Maybe, if he could get through to Nathan, the kid would listen and get the message to his brother. It was almost impossible to get the brothers separated long enough, as Samuel himself had told Reed earlier, his brother was always close by. Goddammit, this was looking worse and worse

And the main, most troubling point still remained: what the hell could possibly want in exchange for spying for him? It just really looked like they just didn't want to be here…

Oh.

He had to hope he lucked out and found the kid by himself for once.

Guess he can have nice things for once. He found the kid balancing on the edge of a lowish roof, trying —  and failing — to pretend he wasn't trying to look through a higher window.

"Hey kid, what are you doing there all alone? Your brother abandoned you?", the boy just gave him a dirty side glance, going right back to his anxious window watching.

From the muffled half-yelling, he assumed that their troublemaking ways had caught up with the brothers. Maybe Samuel had taken one for the team to spare his brother the sermon?

"Get down, son. I gotta ask you something".

"Shh, I'm busy. Get back later".

Victor huffed, amused, "No can do, kid.  I swear you're gonna like it if your little pickpocketing lessons are any indication".

At that, he looked back down, an excited spark in his eyes. He did manage to catch himself pretty quickly, putting on his best poker face. Which sucked, honestly.

"Sam told me not to talk to you at all. And he meant it".

"Oh yeah?".

"I think he's mad because you called his tactics shitty. Also, you insulted me, that's a big no-no". He shrugged, "So, no talking".

"Well he isn't here right now, is he? And anyway, what's he gonna do? Noogie you to death?"

He paused at that. Wow.

"Come on kid, I can see you're itching to hear it, come on down. What your brother doesn't know won't kill him. You can always tell him everything later".

"That's uh, a good point", that's right Sullivan, you almost got him.

At that, the boy finally jumped down from the roof. Finally, He made a vague "follow me" gesture, lighting a cigar as he walked a little ways over.

He told the kid about how he had been lying about a lot of things, how the name he knew him by wasn't even the real deal. He made a big show out of revealing the true one, giving the whole "my friends call me Sully" spiel.

The kid really tried his best to seem unmoved. In all his 8-year-old glory, tried to ask what was his angle, to which he replied with a simple affirmation of his and his brother's talent, which could only be improved with training, which he could provide if they helped him do a little something. Plus, they'd get another little thing in the end which was clearly way more to his and his brother's benefit, anyway.

Appeal to their ego, lay out the preposition, simple. It was obvious the kid was already sold on the idea. Now, he just had to hope the kid managed to do the same with his brother.

Which tropes are your favorites?

@silvarbelle was asking me this earlier today, and it’s been sloshing around in the back of my head.

The short answer is all of them.  I’m not picky.  I love fanfiction because of tropes.  It’s unabashedly, fiercely, proudly tropetastic.  *pats AO3 fondly* This baby can fit soooo many tropes!  Most of the writers on AO3 are not in it for the plot twist or the shock value... they’re just there to soup up your favs until they hum and purr and deliver a full dose of satiation and contentment (that doesn’t mean they’re fluff, mind you, it just means you get precisely what you are seeking).

Roommates.  Sharing a bed.  Huddling for warmth.  Time travel fix-it.  Fake/pretend relationships.  Hurt/comfort.  Pining.  Sex pollen.  Fuck or die.  Soulmates.  A/B/O.  Accidental marriage/bond.  D/s.  Found family.

Having said that, and thought about it a little more.  I sure do like the odd ones.  

Sentinel/Guide.  Accidental baby acquisition.  Accidental genderswap.  Animal transformation.  Telepath/empath (mmmm, love me a fucked up empath).  De-aging/age regression.  Daemons.  Space AUs.  Werewolves.  Skin Hunger.  Fusions with, like, Dragonriders of Pern or Harry Potter.  Hanahaki Disease.  Wingfic.  Parallel universes.  Involuntary invisibility (it’s a trope if I say it is!).

Hmmm, obviously, I’m unable to narrow it down.
