The Deep Dark Blue Day 1
Detroit: Become Human Prompt Challenge from @connor-sent-by-cyberlife
Summery:  Lieutenant Hank Anderson had been a naval officer for years. It was his life, his passion, everything he cared about now. And yet, all it took was one look from the tiny Mer child to make him willing to risk it all.
Day One - Hidden Treasure
Words-756
Chapter Summery: Hank finds Connor.

Ao3 or read below
Hank had been doing this job for a long time. His whole family had, really. His dad, grandfather, great grandfather, they had all served in the Department of Pirate Disbandment.
Piricy, despite the continued romanticism for the term, was a growing blight on the world. People thought it to be swashbuckling adventures on the high seas. Daring sword fights and lawless freedom.
And maybe that’s how it once was, Hank couldn’t speak for history. What he did know was that the pirates nowadays, they were just a new breed of gang violence. Angry, violent delinquents who only ended up robbing or killing innocent people just trying to do their jobs. He hated capitalism with every inch of his soul. But that wasn’t the twenty-something year old who was fresh out of college and trying to feed his new family’s fault.
That was why he still did this. That was why his family did this. That was why, even after he lost his son, he didn’t stop. So that other parents could go home to their children even if he couldn't.
And he was damn good at it.
Hank had thrown himself into his work for the DPD. He had risen in ranks and was now the first Lieutenant of the most decorated fleet in the navy. He knew this job better than anyone.
Which is why he knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that he should put the bottle down.
It was rule number one. Never take anything from the hold. Everything they recovered was to be meticulously documented and, if possible, returned to its rightful owner. Even the unclaimed items were either donated or sent to charity auctions. Nothing, nothing was to go to the officers directly. Yet here he was, holding this bottle more tempted than ever to break that cardinal law.
It wasn’t the bottle itself that enticed Hank, there was nothing particularly interesting about it. It wasn’t some hidden treasure that tempted him with immeasurable wealth. It was just a repurposed bottle of ‘Captain Connor’s Silver Rum’. Cheap, and honestly a shitty drink, but even that would have been better than what was actually inside.
Within the clear glass, barely the size of his thumb, was the tiniest Mer Hank had ever seen.
It had to be a baby, just a fry. How the pirates had caught it, he had no clue. Those bastards had their hands in lots of illegal trade, exotic pets didn’t surprise him, but a Mer? They were incredibly dangerous, considered basically monsters despite their almost human appearance. Why someone would want one as a pet was beyond him.
But if life had taught Hank anything it was that people, in general, were shitty and stupid.
“Lieutenant!” Hank heard someone call from above deck. “Everything alright down there?”
His heart jumped into his throat. “Yeah, I got everything under control,” he shouted back. The last thing he wanted was for someone to come down. If anyone saw the little fry, they’d probably kill it right away. It’s what he should do, he knew that. He should either kill it, or at the very least throw it overboard and let nature take its course but…
The tiny thing blinked awake. It swam in a lazy circle before pressing a chubby little hand to the glass, and soulful brown eyes stared at him.
Fuck. Fuck him and his soft heart. He couldn’t just let the thing die.
“Fuck,” Hank swore aloud, tucking the bottle into his coat. “You better not end up getting me into trouble.”
He knew it was likely the fry couldn’t hear him and, if he could, was probably too young to understand. But he felt the need to say it anyway. This was a bad idea, there was no way around that. This was going to bite him in the ass one way or another.
From what he knew about Merfolk though, they grew fast. Evolution and the harsh reality of the sea led to them having short childhoods and stagnating as adults for nearly a century before succumbing to the downfalls of old age. He would probably be toddler sized in maybe a month tops, then he could release him and the little thing might actually stand a chance. He would just need to keep him hidden until then.
Making his way back above deck, Hank couldn’t resist running his fingers over the concealed bottle. He traced the embossed letters on the label. “Connor, huh?” he mumbled. “You better not make me regret this.”
