some fun facts and scrapped scenes from Breakthrough:

- the second nightmare mentioned about “being drowned by a ton of Kirumis” early in the fic is a reference to the true ending of BioShock Infinite

- Ryoma’s unpleasant reaction to hearing about what the in-universe Danganronpa fans had to say about his death is a slight jab at the real life fanbase and their common tendency to make fun of his death in the game

- Ryoma’s scarf that he wears when goes outside is an item in V3 that he likes; the Autumn-Colored Scarf. the ginger tea he drinks by the fire is also an item he likes.

- i chose a winter setting because i felt it would fit the downcast theme of the fic

- because of its setting, the fic was written during winter and uploaded on the last day of winter 2023 (to be honest it was on the last day because i kept getting distracted ;;)

- the foods Ryoma eats throughout the fic (except for the miso soup) were all foods i had made myself around the time the fic was being written

- the climactic scene of Ryoma falling through the ice was inspired by/based on multiple pieces of media i’ve seen or come across: Flametail’s death in Warrior Cats (i don’t read Warriors but i’m fairly familiar with it), the bear attack scene in Balto, Five Feet Apart, and weirdly enough, Beauty and the Beast: An Enchanted Christmas (something i remember watching in my childhood).

- while not stated but implied in the fic, Ryoma did lose weight from the lack of eating; he lost about 5-10 pounds, which he regained after his improvement near the end of the fic

- in relation to the above, Shuichi was originally going to tell Ryoma that he lost weight out of concern. it was cut because i felt like pointing out someone’s weight loss due to depression-caused undereating was insensitive

- the scene of Shuichi feeding Ryoma the rice was originally the night after the rescue scene. i moved it to before the rescue for pacing reasons + fic length

- Ryoma was originally going to fall asleep after crying in Kirumi’s lap, but was cut because including it with the dinner scene would make the fic too long

- i wanted every character that appears in this fic to have at least one line of dialogue

- the outfits that Ryoma, Kirumi, and Shuichi are wearing on the day of the lake rescue scene are the GraffArt Cafe outfits pictured here. Ryoma’s was slightly modified to have longer pants legs, no ankle chain (because he took it off before he went outside), and the Autumn-Colored Scarf.

People seem to think this is fake because it's written in English. Please understand that these atrocities depend on the war of attrition between governments and public attention. The momentum of public outcry is difficult to sustain through repeated stonewalling and bureaucratic intractability. When we're flooded with these reports and a sense of futility and despair replaces the anger, it allows compassion fatigue to set in and the violence to become normalized. Massacring hospitals, killing sick children and openly targeting humanitarian aid workers (Netanyahu just declared the UNRWA is in league with Hamas) will become simply more news articles that fade into the background, and open genocides will soon become part of the "lesser evil".

Take care of yourselves how you can, take distance where needed, but please never tune out and give up on the two million people for whom we are the only witness and hope. Never stop boosting and sharing the news and posts you find, never stop getting out there and joining every protest you can, however small. Anger burns out, which is why activism must depend on an immovable sense of justice and uncompromising value for human life. It's not just about Gaza, it's about the kind of evil our generation will be coerced into accepting as unchangeable and inevitable hereafter.

The IOF continues to steal the childhoods of countless Palestinian children. I've seen so many videos of very blatant symptoms of PTSD -seeing emotional and psychological responses to triggers from sudden sounds and movements. You can see stress and anxiousness and fear in their eyes -even when we see videos of them smiling/being hugged and comforted by journalists, doctors, and neighbors/relatives in their communities -they have been robbed -so many of them for decades now and continuously of just being able to be children -to be free from violence and oppression.

I have also seen videos of their entire lives being changed instantaneously with a debilitating injury or amputation due to their communities/hospitals/homes being air-striked, to losing their entire families and being orphaned. I've seen videos of them lifeless in their parents arms -something no parent SHOULD EVER have to record and share to get the world to fucking pay attention.

These are 'experiences,' and circumstances NO child should EVER have to face in their life. I'd say where the hell has UNICEF been -because aren't you supposed to be protecting children's rights ALL around the world? Are Palestinian children not worthy of protection? Over 10,000 of them have been MURDERED by the IOF.

Children shouldn't have to be worried about hearing BOMBS -they should be talking about their school lives, their friends, how excited they are to go to the beach, to try new foods at a restaurant they want to go to, to travel -to do so many wonderful things but THIS is what they have to live with right now even with glimpses of light and hope...
