Update: she needs surgery on Friday to repair the tendon. She's only 4.

Hey so with the barbie movie coming out mod is once again seeing comments like “I’m nonbinary and wish I could just have flat genitalia like a doll, it would take away my dysphoria”. Mod got a dysphoric culture ask about it like 2 years ago actually and now there are more so:

If your transition goal is to have a complete removal of all your internal and external genitalia, there is a real surgery that people get to do that. It’s called genital nullification.

It’s also called nullectomy or nullo.

It’s not a very new or super complicated surgery. Everything is taken out/taken off and you’re left with just a hole for your urethra (where you urinate out of). The urethra may be moved as part of surgery. If you research the procedure you’ll also probably hear them talk about urethral shortening, because nullification is mostly done on cis men/transfems/nonbinary patients who require a penectomy as part of the surgery.

Now don’t get this for an aesthetic or because you like how dolls look. It takes 6-8 weeks of recovery and is as serious a decision as any other bottom surgery. More info is here and here. This website has some info and pictures (graphic warning) of nullification along with phallus-preserving vaginoplasty, another nonbinary surgery.

unfortunately, most intersex people are not told outright that they are intersex, in that verbiage, even by doctors or other medical professionals. most of us have strung together that conclusion through being told our specific conditions if we're lucky, or a piece or part of it such as being told a symptom, or even being told nothing at all. many intersex people undergo surgery at very very young ages and are never informed about it ever in life, and only find out by seeing scars, or never at all.

the only reason i discovered i was intersex was because of how apparent my condition made itself to me. i started growing a full beard during puberty and had some disruptions with my menstrual cycles that were so intense and severe i was having to stay home from school. i was told by the obgyn that i "produced too many androgens, and needed to be placed on estrogen to correct it." that's all they told me. by the way, the estrogen made things far worse for me, and the only thing that actually helped was starting testosterone HRT.

being intersex is for the most part a process of piecing things together. people are very hush hush about it for the most part and don't want to draw attention to it, so you have to be your own detective. you have to be your own advocate.

alright we're out and lucid so here are some notes

funny things:

-> after anesthesia, they showed me my teeth and I reportedly said "that's so cool" like four times (I don't remember that)

-> repeatedly asked nurses if I did a good job. one responded "you didn't have to do much, but you did great"

-> tried to prove I still knew how to do math

-> tried to explain different signs in ASL

-> had to be told to stop talking and bite down on the gauze

whumpy things:

-> of all the symptoms, I dealt the worst with the post-anesthesia dizziness. i was miserable for about two hours, and every time I moved i felt like I was on a treadmill

-> bled Way Too Much (likely on account of me talking too much at the start, but I still have gauze in because of how much I'm bleeding)

-> cannot tell where my tongue or lips are. chances of biting my tongue or lips are high due to my inability to feel them.

-> couldn't talk for several hours. not due to the pain or gauze. simply Too Overwhelmed.

-> was helped to sip some water. the image was very gentle and soft for you caretaker lovers out there

two rumbling laughs cause your eyes to flutter open and you’re already beaming as two beautiful and familiar faces swim into view from the end of the incredibly comfortable bed you’re laying on.

I just wish that more people could understand how common and dangerous this transphobic conservative "protect our daughters" rhetoric is.

It's weaponized against trans women and transfeminine people all the time. This is visible in bans against transfeminine people playing on girls and women's sports teams, and it's visible in bathroom bans.

However, it is also weaponized against trans men and transmasculine people in different, but less discussed, ways.

We're infantilized. Regarded as impressionable, lacking in self-awareness, and easily influenced. We are victims of our doctors, gender therapists, big pharma, liberal teachers, and social media. We are misled, brainwashed. We don't choose to transition, we are "transed". We have no true agency of our own, we're manipulated. (And if we are neurodivergent, that adds tax; we aren't competent, we aren't capable of understanding the significance of transitioning or of fully consenting to gender affirming care, we are exploited.)

The "permanent" and "irreversible damage" that conservatives refer to is nearly always loss of fertility. We are "poisoned" by testosterone, "mutilated" by hysterectomies that leave us unable to have babies and mastectomies that leave us unable to breastfeed. "Damaged" pitiable things that can no longer fulfill our true "biological purpose".

Or course all of this is bullshit. But this narrative is absolutely a driving force behind trans healthcare bans. It's the reason behind the outrage over a few pages in a body image book aimed at teen girls.

It's fucked that more people don't see this for what it is.
