Your feet were dangling off the edge of the tower as you looked over it, the sun was only just setting as you first got onto your night guard shift. You enjoyed it though, it often felt like the only time you got away from the now busy prison community. You closed your eyes, allowing your face to bathe in the warm light the sunset was giving off. You chuckled, “I only just got on shift”. He nodded, “true, but i did bring snacks to persuade you” he said, shaking a bag of your favourite sweets. You laughed, snatching the packet from him. “You don’t need snacks to spend time with me. I appreciate your company” you giggled. Rick felt his heart flutter, he loved being the reason you made that sound, he would often find himself trying to ease it out of you multiple times a day. After the loss of his wife, he allowed you to get close to him, talk him out of the pain he was feeling. Use his anger at the world to protect the rest of the group, learn from his mistakes. He admired you for following him in the tombs to smack him one and drag him out, opening up the prison to create a safe haven for more than just the group. Something Lori had never attempted to help him with. “I saw them on the run today, thought you would like them.” He said, blush growing on his cheeks when you let out the adorable sound again. “Well thank you, you sure know how to treat a girl rick” you joked.

“Do you think we will beat this world? Learn to live with the horrible stuff we have done and what we have to do” you asked him. He sighed, unsure of the answer himself. He had done a fair share of bad things to protect those he loved, “I’m not sure. I mean the things I’ve done, I would have arrested myself for a few years ago” he joked. You laughed, “yeah that’s very true”. A comfortable silence fell over the two of you, smiling in the cool breeze of the night. Rick kept sneaking glances over to you, smiling as he saw the small lantern illuminate your best features.

You smirked, turning your head to look at the blushing man. He attempted to smirk back but failed, the way you were looking at him caused his heart to stop for a second. I started SPN in 2013 as a bibro that shipped destiel. The thing that finally brought me to the fandom was the podfic of Two Boys From Kansas in King Uther’s Court (a BBC Merlin/SPN gen crossover), and I binge-watched s1-7 a couple times with my baby bro until new episodes started coming out and watched those as they aired until s10. Came back to fandom in 2020 and couldn't enjoy much destiel content. The culture of heller fandom and my preference for a canon-adjacent aroace relationship that doesn't sideline Sam or change Dean's character has made my enjoyment of most deancas content a thing of the past. (Also I'm like 200% more obsessed with SamDean since the finale.)

The Shadowforge Craft Festival

The seasonal Craft Fest is back once again looking for vendors and entertainers! With the ceasefire engaged, members of the Alliance AND Horde are welcome to gather in the commons of Blackrock Mountain, in the heart of Shadowforge City for the second ever Shadowforge Craft Fest!

What: The hard-working Dwarven clans of Khaz Modan, as well as other denizens of Azeroth, wish to host an artisan’s festival to honor centuries of fine dedication to masterful craftsmanship! This will be the Summer installment in this seasonal event, so come and embrace the various cultures of our world!

Not a Dwarf or Alliance? No problem! All are welcome to join! Bring plenty of Elixirs of Tongues!

When: Saturday July 18th, 2020, 6-9 PST. Opening ceremonies will take place outside the entrance to Upper Blackrock Spire at 6pm.

Where: The Inner Ring of Blackrock Mountain, aka. Shadowforge City!

Contacts: You can message Lynae, Bathildis, Lissianä or Modarin in game at any point, or send your request via in-game mail! We can also invite you to our Discord channel or in-game community!

What you can do: As a visitor, you are welcome to roam around the festival grounds, enjoy the night atmosphere and some good casual RP! Come by and shop around, purchase fine goods from master craftsmen and women around the city or submit work orders. Enjoy great entertainment, fireworks, drink, and food! Even register to participate in any sub-events we may have (like a drinking contest or friendly duels).

As a vendor, you can register for a booth to show and sell your wares! We like to spread everyone out along the inner ring of Blackrock Mountain, allowing tons of space for different players to form small gatherings. Blacksmiths, engineers, scribes, even chemists and cooks are welcome!

If you can craft something, wish to take on an apprentice, or teach your trade, you can register. Don’t worry, there are no fees or anything! We just want to keep track of how many people want to fill this position. Please get your booth approved beforehand!

As an entertainer, you can claim a spot to put on your act. Whether you are a bard, have a show, or wish to provide games for others to play, you’re welcome to fill this role! We usually have a bard wandering around the festival playing actual music using addons like TRP3 Extended and Musician, so this is really just limited to creativity.

We definitely plan to spread you guys out so that you’re not being overwhelmed by RP chatter, so it’s very important that we get you set-up in a spot early!

If you don’t want to do any of these things, but wish to be a part of the festival, you are welcome to volunteer to help out where/when it is needed. If you wish to get involved in organizing the event, please contact Lynae, Lissianä or Bathildis in game! I look forward to hearing from you!

PS: If you use the addon TRP3 Extended, you’ll also be in good company at this event. We’ll have special wares available (Bathildis has a full bar, as well as a limited edition Festival Brew), as well as at least one bard playing live music throughout part of the event.

If you are interested in signing up as a vendor, entertainer, or volunteer, please fill out a registration form! Though we don’t update the list daily, spot selection is handled in the order that forms are received.

Still chugging away at these summer and spring anime...sorry for the delay...(LOL, that rhymed without me meaning to.)

Also, I’ve been on the fence about whether to keep Golden Kamuy, since almost no one I read the reviews of follows it now and it’s a week’s wait (when accounting for my AniList challenge)...so I’m putting it on pause so I don’t have to suffer later.

Oh, this is from Shonen Sunday? Didn’t know that until now.

…jumping to the 2nd-last episode in a season is pretty unprecendented, but I’m going to watch this for the sake of Jon’s Creator Showcase…then again, I need to finish this anime anyway, so it’s just cutting and changing the order for something I already know the outcomes of.

I used to lose myself in movies so much that I would lose all sense of who I was and would have to “regain the bearings of myself”, so to speak. I would have to reconstruct who I was, even though I technically hadn’t “been broken” and I knew once I did that, it felt different. Like I’d travelled through time and past me would never be the same as present me. That’s why I kind of get what Machi means.

Oh, I didn’t listen to this OP much…probably because I’m emphasising bingeing the spring and summer series I left behind and now that I can skip the ads on most of my anime, I’m leaving behind the anime I’ll be slower on.

The manga was written when there weren’t as many cell phones around, much less smartphones.

Shigure vs. Gentaro (of HypMic, of course)…a writing competition! That would be fun.

…Crow’s note here makes sense (<- this is why I changed the order). Shigure was clearly asking a question there.

Come to think of it, HypMic and Froob have some similar characters. The stoic doctor is Hatori/Jakurai, the energetic smol one is Momiji/Ramuda, the teasing author is Shigure/Gentaro…that could make for some good fanfic material, really.

…this OP has lyrics?! I just hear strange squeaky noises, the kind you hear on some autotuned sogs to make them seem more ominous (I can’t remember if there’s a similar sound in G-Anthem of Y City or Yokohama Walker, but one of the MTC songs has similar noises).

I kinda guessed Leo’s package was the one Schaake and her partner were looking for. I was right.

That CGI (on the truck) is…kinda conspicuous.

I wonder: how many protagonists start out as absolute wimps, unwilling to fight because they either know or don’t know their own power? It’s a pretty standard introduction for things with fights.

This battle track is nice. I listened to some of the Magatsu music under Masaru Yokoyama’s name on Spotify and it’s pretty cool, but since it’s background music, there’s not a lot of demand to listen to it (from me or anyone else, I don’t think).

Why is there only a single shield if they know the enemy has heavy artillery?

…what the heck is a Zeits? Update: You can see a “Zeits” (or however it’s spelt) in the credits list, suggesting Zeits is a character in this.

I knew this was my last premiere and this might have made or broken my entire watching schedule, but this is just a pretty down-to-earth premiere for a fantasy mobile game. While that cliffhanger compelled me to continue, I don’t think it’s good enough to beat its competition in the long run.

I know I said Magatsu was my last premiere, but just to be sure, I’m watching this one.

This dance scene is beautifully orchestrated. The fact there’s no music means you focus entirely on the motion.

The OP seems to trade more in colour and spectacle than actual “cool factor”.

You can tell exactly which group is which based on the colours they wear. Makoto isn’t affiliated with anyone, so he’s wearing black and had yellow earlier.

I think an anime is cowardly – or trying to save budget – if they deliberately choose an angle where they can’t show the moment of impact clearly.

I think IWGP is moving in the direction of pushing the gangs against each other in the way Makoto describes in ep. 2.

As for what I think of it now, it's decent if you want something down-to-earth, but it seems to be missing some kind of "wow factor". Like it's afraid to commit to deeper characterisation, even though it has Makoto as the ostensible lead/viewpoint character.

Notice Mimimi says “Hifumi-kun” – she’s still on an outside layer compared to Doppo, who just uses Hifumi’s name. Also, I noticed Mimimi called herself Hifumi’s “onna” – “woman” – explicitly, as if she belonged to him. The subs reflect that, but it seems to have less meaning in English because they outright translated it as such.

Well, they got to demonstrate Doppo’s snapping. I’m more than happy with just that. Also, Hifumi calls Doppo with a -kun here.

Who are your favourite DD villains? Fisk, Bullseye and Mr Fear all sound brilliant from what I know of them, but are there any others with similarly iconic influence on Matt?

There are! Daredevil comics aren’t known for their well-crafted villains to the extent that, say, Spider-Man or Batman comics are, but I really enjoy a lot of Matt’s rogues gallery. Fisk and Bullseye are probably the two biggest names, but there are many others who have had major impacts on his life, and the Marvel Universe in general, over the years. Here are some of the most notable DD villains, in my opinion:

Gladiator (Melvin Potter) is a major antagonist who, over the years has become arguably one of the most nuanced and interesting Daredevil characters. I wrote a longer post about him, way back when we thought we might actually get a Gladiator origin story in the Netflix show, but in general, a lot of his lasting appeal comes from the complexity of his character. When he was first introduced in Daredevil vol. 1 #18 he was a pretty standard Silver Age villain: a guy with semi-logical origin story, a funky costume, and a penchant for monologuing. Specifically, Melvin Potter was the owner of a costume store who was sick of being disrespected by his customers, and so decided to make a name for himself by attacking people with spinning blades.

Matt: “He’s not fooling with those wrist blades… he’s fighting for real! But, why? I’m certain I’ve never met him before!”

Melvin: “You can’t keep dodging me forever! And the moment you slip, you shall have the honor of being my first victim!”

Daredevil vol. 1 #18 by Stan Lee, John Romita, and Sam Rosen

Over the years, various writers have worked hard to add nuance to his character. Despite his fearsome appearance and goal of gaining respect, most early Gladiator stories involve Melvin being manipulated by stronger, smarter supervillains. Later, he becomes even more sympathetic: a dangerous killer who, at heart, is gentle and naive and hates when he loses control and hurts people. This creates an inherent discord in his character that adds an emotional hook to all of his stories. Matt tries to help him, and Melvin is grateful for Matt’s friendship and returns that favor when he can, but sometimes they end up having to fight each other. Essentially, Melvin’s story is the relentless tragedy of a man who wants to live a peaceful life but keeps falling victim to his own demons and the cruelty of the world around him.

Matt: “I’m not letting you off that easy. If you want to become the Gladiator again, you’ll have to get past me.”

Melvin: “Past you?! Look at you– you’re just a skinny little blind guy! I’d break you in half! It’d be easy…”

Matt: “Is that what you want?”

Melvin: “Why not? I’m the Gladiator! The Gladiator! When I’m wearing my armor, I’m unbeatable, I’m…”

Daredevil vol. 1 #173 by Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Glynis Wein

This complicated and heartwrenching characterization has helped Melvin to remain a fresh and popular antagonist (anti-hero, even) and a regular guest in Daredevil. He is one of several characters who complicates the hero/villain dichotomy, and thereby both emphasizes and challenges Matt’s own heroism.

Typhoid Mary/Mary Walker is another one of the more famous Daredevil villains, and someone who has had a significant impact on Matt’s story over the years. I wrote a longer post on her as well. Female antagonists in particular seem to suffer from a variety of weaknesses in their depictions, and Typhoid– as a sexual character by nature, as well as someone who plays upon “crazy” villain tropes– has had her share of not great depictions over the years. However, at her core, she is a wonderfully compelling character and a dangerous villain who is literally multifaceted by design. Even moreso than Melvin Potter, Mary plays upon the concept of a good person who is powerless to prevent themself from doing violent things– in Mary’s case, through genuinely having multiple psyches inhabiting one body. She is in constant conflict with herself, as gentle Mary and bloodthirsty Typhoid battle for dominance. As much as she is an antagonist to Matt and the other heroes whose paths she crosses, she is her own arch-enemy.

Matt: “Curious. That’s a completely different woman running away! What came over her?”

Daredevil vol. 1 #256 by Ann Nocenti, John Romita Jr., and Christie Scheele

Matt’s dealings with Mary have brought about some of the more unheroic moments in his career. In Joe Kelly’s attempt to integrate the Man Without Fear-verse origin story into the 616 universe, he proposed that Matt nearly killed Mary on his first superhero outing. When Typhoid, in her introductory arc, is hired to seduce Matt, it works– he cheats on Karen with her. Later, when attempting to bring down the Kingpin’s empire, Matt removes Mary from the equation by sleeping with her to get her guard down and then forging documents to have her locked away in a psychiatric hospital. She hits all of his weak points: as Mary, she is a victim who needs rescuing… and an attractive one at that. As Typhoid, she is a dangerous enemy who must be stopped. In addition to her skill with weapons, she has all kinds of awesome psychic powers– including, most notably, pyrokinesis– and something about her physiology messes with Matt’s senses and makes her difficult to fight. She is a challenge on every level, and in many ways, Matt serves the same purpose for her– Mary (and, arguably, Typhoid as well) accidentally falls in love with him, representing a loss of power and control that she can’t stand.

Daredevil vol. 1 #260 by Ann Nocenti, John Romita Jr., and Christie Scheele

The Hand I love the Hand– which is to say, I love the Chaste, and part of why I love the Chaste is because I love their rivalry with the Hand. On some levels, the Hand are your standard Big Bad Secret Organization, but I also find them to be a lot of fun, and they have been a significant force in Daredevil comics since they were introduced. The Hand are key players in Miller’s updated version of Matt’s origin, which introduced Stick and gave him a purpose for training Matt. They also had a huge role in Elektra’s origin, since her attempt to singlehandedly bring them down from the inside led to her becoming an assassin. And of course, Matt’s role as leader of the Hand and temporary vessel for their patron demon, the Beast, was a defining moment in recent DD comics and a low point of Matt’s career. The Hand are dangerous because they are vast, and their high-ranking members have all kinds of cool powers, which I love. And there’s also a certain amount of weakness and dysfunction to the Hand that makes them appealing. They are a once-great organization relegated to being mercenaries-for-hire. Their low-ranking members are fairly weak– as Matt quips in Volume 1 #380, “a little harsh language and [they’re] up in smoke!” They were led by a Skrull (disguised as Elektra) for a while, and didn’t even notice. Arguably their most dangerous enemy, Master Izo, mostly just bothers them with Hand puns.

I also enjoy the way the Hand and the Chaste operate and Matt’s relationship with them. Matt isn’t an official member of the Chaste (like Elektra, he was rejected for being too emotional– which, in his case at least, is a fair assessment) but he still teams up with them on occasion, and the experience almost always puts him out of his depth in really entertaining ways. Matt is one of the Hand’s biggest enemies and one of the Chaste’s most useful allies, so he gets dragged into their business even when he doesn’t want to be involved.

There are also two excellent (and, I’d say, influential) alternate universes in which Matt joins the Hand and thrives in their presence: What If? Daredevil vs. Elektra and Earth-65 (Spider-Gwen-verse).

Lady Bullseye (Maki Matsumoto) And if we’re discussing the Hand and the Chaste, I have to mention Maki– undisputed head of the Bullseye Fan Club and another of my favorite Daredevil villains. She’s relatively new (she was introduced during Brubaker’s run) and so hasn’t had a particularly big long-term influence on Matt, but she is a great character with extensive connections to Daredevil history. One thing I love about her is the fact that while she modeled her look and identity on Bullseye, she isn’t treated as just female version of him, as her name might suggest. They actually have very little in common; she just chose to honor Bullseye because he played a role in her origin story by indirectly rescuing her from a human trafficking ring.

Since then, Maki has teamed up with Bullseye– mostly notably, resurrecting and caring for him after his death in “Shadowland”– but more often, she operates on her own as an assassin. Like both Elektra and Matt, she was trained by the Hand and the Chaste without forming an official allegiance with either, and it seems her primary teacher was Master Izo– thus making her Matt and Elektra’s ninja aunt and/or sister in the Chaste Family Tree that definitely exists in my head and nowhere else.

Daredevil vol. 2 #500 by Ed Brubaker, Michael Lark, Stefano Gaudiano, Matt Hollingsworth, et al.

Maki masterminds the destruction of Matt’s life that leads him to join the Hand. She is extremely smart (she passes herself off as a lawyer during Brubaker’s run and fools both Matt and Foggy; as far as anyone knows, she might actually have a law degree…?), an excellent fighter (arguably better than Matt, not quite as good as Elektra), an absolute badass, and an all-around great antagonist who deserves her own solo series (hint, hint, Marvel).

Death-Stalker I’m not sure Death-Stalker counts as a major Daredevil villain, but he was used about once a week in late 70s Daredevil so he’s certainly been a recurring presence. I also just find him really cool, conceptually. One of the interesting things about Death-Stalker is that he started his existence as a completely different supervillain: the Exterminator, who is best known for “killing” Mike Murdock! The Exterminator had a weapon that could shift its victims out of sync with the time-stream. When Matt blows it up to fake Mike’s death, the Exterminator is caught in the blast, with shocking consequences:

Death-Stalker: “How many long and empty years has it been, Murdock? How many… since you so callously destroyed my awesome Time-Displacement Ray… catching me fully in the time-shattering explosion?! How long has it been since I was hurled through the fabric of time? But what you believed to be my death proved instead a macabre rebirth! I found myself in a timeless limbo! Unobserved, I could go anywhere! Do anything!”

Daredevil vol. 1 #158 by Roger McKenzie, Frank Miller, and George Roussos

Thus, the Exterminator returns years later as Death-Stalker– a villain who can move freely through time and space, become intangible at will, and whose mere touch is lethal. This, combined with his new appearance (glowing eyes, bony hands, huge billowy cape…) makes for an excellent creepy character concept, and some of the Death Stalker issues feel more like horror stories than the typical Daredevil comic.

Matt: “Huh? Wha– No!! My… shoulder… your fingers… like ice–!”

Death-Stalker: “Like death, Daredevil. Like the grim, glacial embrace of the North Wind. No use to flee… you can’t outrun the wind.”

Caption: “For Daredevil, for this sightless adventurer, all the world is blackness, all the time. But now, a different kind of darkness envelopes him, a sort of oblivion he has never known before. He hears his heartbeat slow… feels his mind empty of all thought… feel his every nerve tingle, then go numb… and he knows that he is… dying. And that is all he knows when the darkness claims him and the Death-Stalker relaxes his grip.”

Daredevil vol. 1 #114 by Steve Gerber, Bob Brown, and Stan G.

Sadly, though, I don’t feel he was ever used to his full skin-crawling potential, particularly considering how dangerous his power-set was. He was mostly just a nuisance who rarely got the upper hand, and he was killed in Daredevil #158 when he accidentally materialized through a tombstone during a fight with Matt. One of my favorite details about Death-Stalker isn’t Death-Stalker himself– it’s that his mother lived in a booby-trapped mansion and owned an army of exploding robotic children that she sicced on Matt to avenge her son’s death. But that’s a story for another post…

Jester (Jonathan Powers) The Jester gets no respect, and it’s a shame because he’s both genuinely a great villain when he’s used well and highly entertaining when his 1960s goofiness is played up, and he manages to embody both of those characterizations with absolute panache. He has played a role in some fairly major Daredevil stories over the years and I’d consider him a staple DD villain. His origin story is pure Silver Age silliness: he was an actor who received bad reviews for his first major starring role, found his career heading downhill, and so decided to become a supervillain instead. This is pretty typical of motivations for villains of this time period (see the Gladiator’s origin story above, and Stilt-Man below), but even this aspect of his character has been put to good use. Daredevil #218 features a surprisingly touching story of the Jester stealing the chance to reprise that first starring role– and of Matt keeping the cops distracted (by pretending to be the Jester!) so that his enemy can finally live his dream.

Matt: “You deserve the bow. You were magnificent.”

Jester: “Indeed! I trust the critics will change their tune.”

Daredevil vol. 1 #218 by Denny O’Neil, Sal Buscema, and Christie Scheele

Throughout the issue, Matt draws comparisons between himself and the Jester: their shared mask-wearing and the experiences of disillusionment that shaped their lives– and while it certainly doesn’t give the Jester the emotional depth of certain other Daredevil villains, it’s a memorable connection.

But where the Jester is at his most dangerous is not as an actor looking for attention– it’s as a creator of chaos. The Jester is a master of illusions and media manipulation. In his introductory arc, he frames Daredevil for his murder and turns Matt into a wanted criminal. Later, he uses a campaign of false news reports and misinformation to sabotage Foggy’s run for District Attorney, turn the superhero community into targets, and throw the whole country into an uproar. Most recently, in Waid’s run, he manipulated TV footage to cause rioting in NYC in the wake of an unpopular and highly publicized court ruling. His plans don’t always succeed, but even then, the scope and effectiveness of the damage he causes makes him a truly formidable villain.

Daredevil vol. 3 #32 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, and Javier Rodriguez

The Owl (Leland Owlsley) The Owl has, unfortunately, been overshadowed by the Kingpin for most of his existence, and as such, hasn’t been given anywhere near the same amount of character development or nuance. They were created based on the same character concept: a high-powered mobster with a shadowy network of pawns who controls the city’s criminal underworld.

Daredevil vol. 1 #3 by Stan Lee, Joe Orlando, and Sam Rosen

Unfortunately, the Kingpin just ended up doing it better, and while there are a few Owl story arcs that I really like, I’ve never found him that interesting. However, he is hugely significant because he was the very first Daredevil supervillain, introduced all the way back in Daredevil #3! (In #1 Matt fights the mobsters who killed his father, and in #2 he fights Electro, who is a Spider-Man rogue.) Thus, he has had an impact on Matt’s life simply from having been around for so long. This also means there’s a huge range in his stories, verging from extremely ridiculous (he sometimes eats rats, and used to own an owl-shaped airplane. How cool is that?) to slightly more grounded. There is a great Owl story arc in which his bird-like body modifications start killing him, which gives his law-breaking more nuance, because he is doing it to look for a cure. Matt, upon discovering this, tries to help him.

Matt: “Unh-uh. You take my hand– you’re willing to take my hand– I don’t let go. You’ve got some long ways to go, mister… but you can count on me…”

Daredevil vol. 1 #303 by D.G. Chichester, M.C. Wyman, and Christie Scheele

There’s also great point in Bendis’s run when the Owl, in a surprising demonstration of cleverness, hires a lawyer to sue Daredevil for breaking and entering. It doesn’t work, but it throws Matt off and is absolutely priceless.

The Owl has also had several children– two unnamed young kids who were introduced in Alias, and Jubula Pride, who was introduced in Daredevil Volume 4 and worked alongside Matt to rescue her father. Jubula’s brief-but-memorable appearance added a bit more depth to the Owl– allowing us to see him in the role of a parent as well as a villain. But mostly, over the years the Owl has remained one of the more insidious of New York’s mob bosses, always scheming to stay in power and fight his way out of the Kingpin’s shadow. And he’s been doing it for so long that he feels like an integral part of Daredevil comics.

Turk Barrett He’s not a costumed supervillain or even much of a threat, but Turk has become an iconic Daredevil antagonist for both his sheer ineptitude and his plucky ability to stay alive. Of all of the recurring low-level mobster characters, he has the most engaging personality, and his dynamic with Matt is one of long-held friendly animosity. Daredevil isn’t the most dangerous person in Turk’s life, Turk isn’t the most dangerous person in Matt’s life, so they mostly just annoy each other. They’ve even been known to team up, when Turk thinks the odds of survival are in his favor.

Matt: “I flew in, Turk.”

Turk: “…Course. I knew that. ‘Spose the window locks weren’t much trouble…”

Matt: “Melted them with my heat vision.”

Daredevil: Love and War by Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz

Turk is an underdog. He’s kind of a goof and he’s certainly a criminal, but he’s also a small fish in a big and dangerous pond, working in a career where most people eventually end up at the bottom of the East River in concrete shoes (or a taxi, as the case may be). He’s slippery and resourceful, he stays just harmless enough to keep himself out of danger, and you can’t help but root for him, even when he does dumb things like stealing Stilt-Man’s stilts or trying to kill Daredevil for the hundredth unsuccessful time.

Stilt-Man (Wilbur Day), of course, requires no introduction. He is another personal favorite of mine, and a rare case of a goofy Silver Age villain surviving into the modern era while remaining exactly as goofy as he was when first introduced. The great appeal of Stilt-Man is, in fact, that he’s a bit of a joke, while at the same time being quite dangerous, in a comic book physics-kind of way.

Matt: “Mebbe so! But I haven’t forgotten that I’m the gent who whumped you good last time fought! (Man! It sure is lucky I was here! If Stilt-Man ever managed to get the Leap-Frog safely away, what a team those two would make! But, I hear the boys in blue hauling that human jumping jack right now! Which means Stilty and I can go it alone!) Heads up, dad! It’s time for fun ‘n games again!”

Wilbur: “Hah! Didn’t expect me to seize your cable, did you? I should have warned you, little man– I’ve modified my protective armor in such a way as to double my strength! Which means I’m more than a match for your limited talents!!”

Daredevil vol. 1 #26 by Stan Lee, Gene Colan, and Artie Simek

Part of the charm of this characterization is the fact that he’s a joke in-universe as well; most of his appearances in modern comics consist of Stilt-Man being made fun of and/or of the audience being reminded that he’s actually a threat. This creates a great balance in his depictions; the jokes are fun, the sight of various superheroes being beaten up (at least a little) by Stilt-Man is fun, and he remains an enjoyable, mostly lighthearted presence in a landscape that has become dominated by Dark, Serious, and Disturbing villains.

Daredevil vol. 2 #41 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, and Matt Hollingsworth

Stilt-Man is just a short guy in a ridiculous outfit who wants to commit some crimes and get a little respect– and really, who can’t relate to that?

Ikari (???) I’m mentioning Ikari not because he’s a long-established Daredevil villain– he’s not– but because I am fascinated by his potential. He’s a favorite of mine as much for what we don’t know as for what we do. In his introductory arc, we learn this: He was engineered/commissioned by Bullseye to kill Matt, his fighting abilities equal Matt’s, he has hypersenses, and (as a horrified Matt discovers later) he can also see.

Ikari: “Someone has, in fact, managed to re-create the toxic chemicals that blinded you, gave you enhanced senses. Someone whose hate for you keeps him alive. But he didn’t waste the process on weak, malnourished vagrants. He used it to baptize a warrior. A fighter trained to be every bit your equal in skill– and now, in power.”

Daredevil vol. 3 #25 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, and Javier Rodriguez

And that’s it. We don’t know who he is or where he came from, or what the consequences are of having that degree of sensory perception (presumably his vision is heightened too?). We don’t know what his personal goals or motivations are, since we’ve only ever seen him as a pawn– first of Bullseye and then, later, of the Kingpin. But the concept of his character as someone who shares Matt’s powers plus some– who is essentially, skills-wise, a criminal version of Matt– and all the mystery that surrounds him, is hugely compelling to me.

In his last appearance he was killed by the Shroud, but his body was stolen, leaving the door open for him to maybe return sometime in the future and receive more development. I hope he does.

hello, nerds! I’m here, more or less. my pup has decided she wants to be especially obnoxious lately - transitioning her from the schedule my mom had her on to one that works for me has been a nightmare & she’s extra bratty because she wants to play at 5am, & I’m either at work or deadass asleep so that’s been fun! but between my dog walker, & my mom helping me in the evenings, we’re slowly getting there so I’ve actually been able to get decent sleep.

on a positive & related note, I reached an agreement with my boss regarding my hours & schedule so for the foreseeable future (aka the next month) I have some pretty reasonable hours that won’t leave me exhausted & sleep-deprived but also gives me the ability to not only be here but also practice some self care... & mindfully look for a new job, because I think this may be my last holiday season with the siren.

I finished off the last of my tea while typing this up, so I guess that means it’s time for me to get my butt in gear. it’s WEDNESDAY over here, so that means I’ll be over on Ersken ( @huntersprayer ). I’d love to spark new interactions on him, so come nudge my nerd! After I’m done with him for the day, I’m going to pop back over onto Jonathan ( @idumean ) to clean up a few of his verses. I only have a handful left to outline, then less than ten to type up in full after that which is exciting as fuck given how many he has.

SavvyTech RP [Modded] {Factions} {1.12.2} {Serious Roleplay}

Overview:

Savvytech, the working in-dev name, is the combination of a community-written curated lore, Semi-serious post-apocalyptic role-play environment and a 1.12.2 mod-pack, all functioning under the same name. Focusing on tech-based mods with a sub-theme of large-scale combat and industry, we are just opening to the wider public now from our test groups and are seeking to expand the player-base through advertisements on several forums, with staff more than eager to answer any questions available. We are by no means a professional team, like those operating for several years without major issue, but we are a passionate one, and I personally emphasize a community-staff communication and relationship above all else, building our foundation on a strong open-communique between any players and staff. If i had to capture the essence of what makes our focus unique, its the following adage, which i try to run all facets of the community on.

"The player has an equal if not inferior obligation to uphold and maintain the rules and regulations of the community to the staff/administrator/owner, who has the superior obligation to ensure that the services provided are satisfactory to the player, and available sufficiently to the community."

Disclaimer: To this effect the server, discord and community are all run strictly along guidelines which are consistent with the Mojang EULA, Curseforge guidelines and an active staff team who consistently ensure that the community remains free of any toxicity, uninterested parties and otherwise players detrimental to the experience/community.

Role-play:

I personally come from many years of DND campaigns and 'serious' Minecraft RP servers, and this can be seen in my tendency to write in-depth lore, character applications and the general seriousness of tones in the Roleplay context. However this isn't so necessarily enforced, and light-RP is the general norm among players. Both the discord forum and the server are open to those wanting to RP , within the relevant channels on the former, however it isn't forced in gameplay or the discord.

Setting:

The year is 2319, almost 300 years into our future and man kind has been blasted by a catastrophic

thermonuclear event. The present takes place almost 80 years after the bombs fell, proceeding waves of bio-weapons, radioactive release and toxic decay. The world we knew is gone, but there is a hope... Mankind left the seeds to its rekindling in many places, hoping that with redundancy would be an assured immortality by design. The nature of conflict however, is that it is not always so rational, or intermittent. From the sky drop great iron men, the scions heralding the return of the long dead gods of science and logic, upon the ground, and indeed beneath it are the twisted remnants of a society leveled by atomic fire and contorted in the death-throes of a radioactive contagion - Mutants. On foreign worlds, civil wars and similar apocryphal endings have met the seeds of man, and we know look on to the final moments of an interplanetary golden age, will humanity fall that final step into the abyss, or will they grasp onto a thread, and pull themselves once more from this grimdark into the light again?

With a standing Wiki, and over 20'000 words in curated and canonized lore, the focus extends beyond the will of the writers with an open submissions system, adapting and canonizing elements suggested by the community, with such extensively written branches of lore as a race of sentient mutant Mermen in the pacific ocean, the 'city of blood' - housing ancient cybernetic vampires, Cosmic entities of unimaginable power stemming from an energy rift in what was the UK, and thousands of words of adopted lore regarding factions of player design and import.

The Fundamental focus of the server and story-line and arc is the factions emergent in this post-apocalpse world, with a total of 6 'canon' spots for factions, four of which have been successfully written and filled with submissions open for the final two, these factions will dictate the precise nature of the story arc and themes presented with the emergent politics and their reactions to various events and developments in the global arc, the story is for the most part, written by the players. Currently the following factions have entered the fray :

The Ghost Legion:

A remnant of something once greater, this neo-soviet empire of space stations and vessels in orbit around earth has begun landfall in the hopes of recapturing their mother planet, they come with the iron will and singular focus of the red nation, and intend to subjugate all of man in an attempt to bring us back from extinction.

The Collective of Mercurial Researchers:

A desperate escape, a city of genius's and prodigies and a battered stripped-down cruiser hull, these are the base elements, what remains is the story to be told. The CMR are the survivors of the Prometheus Research base who made it back on a last ditch decades-long attempt to escape their slowly frying research station. Many expired on the journey hope, their ship systems slowly failing and causing power outages in cryopod life support, but those that did make landfall intend to rebuild with the democratic vision of the pre-bombing world, combining a drone security force and data cores housing schematics for thousands of experimental designs.

The Hive-Mind:

A collective of sentient robots living in the converted remains of an underground city-made-bunker, they live a benignly-racist isolation from their creators, following their logic-dictated religion of Alpha-Binary Stationlism, they hoard knowledge and artifacts, trading with any outsider willing to do business, but have thus far been spared of attack because of a cultured bacterial contagion which infects their surrounding region. It absorbs thermal energy exponentially and used it to reproduce, cocooning kinetic projectiles with a spongy exterior and dissipating energy discharges. It also is fatal to many breathing organisms, growing inside their longs as it slowly absorbs and lowers the internal body temperature.

The IAAF (Imperial Autocratic Australian Federation ) :

Once a series of military bunkers, the federation is the military heavy-weight of the remaining Terran peoples, forging a war-machine from advanced mechanized walkers and artillery, and boasting several distinct pan-Asian conquests outwards, they are not to be trifled with. Despite this, their soviet tendencies and imperial rule have caused a cultural and somewhat technological decline, resulting in a reliance on analogue, but inferior technologies to more forward-looking peoples.

State of Development:

The server and mod-pack are both in an Open Beta, pending official release with the canon map, however steps will be take to ensure any bases, items etc are not lost in the transfer over, so as to provide a continuity of play. The lore is being openly written and expanded on, and the staff team has available vacancies, although i'll only accept applications on discord via a DM. As of the moment, the official release will also see the finalization of all canon factions, and the implementation of the main story line, right now, the story is entirely emergent to the actions of factions and the individuals of said factions. Modpack updates occur on a nearly monthly basis, consolidating major changes over having continuous, minor updates.

Leaves crunched under your feet, the sound of heavy footsteps filled the forest as ypu and rick desperately chased after the small girl and walkers. Rick quickly swooped her up as he got close, you followed them into a small creak, “wait here with Y/n alright? Then head back together. Ill find my way don’t worry” rick said looking inbetween the two of you. “Alright, be safe” you said smiling at him. He nodded, watching as you tucked the small into the fallen tree, taking your knife out as you watched the walkers fall into the water. You held the girls hand watching rick as he lured the walkers away. The sound of them running in water fading to your ear. You held the shaking girl in your arms, waiting patiently for ricks return. “Is he coming?” Sophia spoke from besides you. You looked down at the young girl nodding, “yeah, he’s given us a head start lets not waste it” you said, holding the small girls hand you pulled her out of shrubs with you. “Lets head back, stay close and listen to okay” you said. The girl clutched the bottom of your top, following you so closely you might have stepped on her.

You tried to keep her silent, but her soft sniffles from being scared attracted the attention of two walkers. You quickly turned to her, “Sophia i need you to run okay, as long as the sun is on your left shoulder you’ll fins the group. Just run as fast as you can okay”

“Please, let me stay with you, I can’t do it”

“Honey you can, alright. Your string like us all, you just gotta prove it to yourself. Run”

She sucked in a breath, gave you a hug before sprinting off, the two walkers turned to look in her way since she was making the most noise. “Hey cocksuckers, here” you shouted. You smirked as the two walkers turned and slowly stumbled your way. You had to run. Thankfully you knew there would be a tracker, hell be able to find you. As you ran you pressed your foot futher in the wet mud, leaving clear tracks for anyone who would look for them.

Daryl watched the group from the hood of the car, waiting for one of the three people to appear, keeping a close eye out for one in particular. “Rick!” He heard one of the women shout, “where are they?” He heard rick question. Daryl sat up realising the man was alone. He slowly stalked his way closer to the group. “They aren’t here? They were meant to run back”

“My daughter is still out there?!” Carol cried, lori took the widow in her arms as she wept. “Me,glenn, daryl and shane will run out and see if we can find them. I’m sorry carol but i will find them” rick said, adjusting his belt and nodding to the small team he assembled.

Daryl watched the men as rick led them to the small creek they had ran to. He paid attention to the ground, once he got in the water. “Hey watch the tracks man, they went this way” he mumbled, looking from Glenn to rick. Rick noticed at Daryls fingers itched around his bow, eager to find you, his childhood friend. “Alright, you both keep em busy. I don’t want to cause a panic. Me and daryl will find em” rick said. “Sure, we can keep em searching cars. I’ll keep them all busy” shane said, nodding to his partner before glenn and him made their way back to the highway. Rick turned to Daryl nodding for him to follow the tracks and he would follow closely behind.

Your breaths were loud as you continued to run from the walkers, small cuts over your arms from where bushes or low lying branches had scrapped you. “Just fuck off already” you panted, glancing back at the walker that was still following you. You could feel your legs start to burn, your breaths became harsher as you pushed yourself harder. Finally, You saw it, a chance to escape. A fallen tree. You quickly made your escape up the tree, watched with amusement as the walker struggled to keep its balance trying to follow you. You were able to catch your breath, your arms exstended over your head opening up your lungs. Your moment of peace was taken too soon when you heard voices. Voices not growls.

“How do you know its her?”

“I gre up with her, she knows what ill look for rick”

You let go of the breath you didnt know you had, it was rick and daryl. “There look” you heard rick mutter. You heard a tang of a crossbow and the thud of walker, looking down you noticed the pest was finally killed. “Hey guys” you smiled, you watched in amusement as they both jumped, their weapons aimed at you. “Y/n! Thank god your safe” rick breathed out. You smiled at the man, before you began your climb down the tree. “I’m glad your safe too” you said, bringing the sherrif into a hug. “I assumed you noticed my tracks?”

Daryl nodded, he stood silently watching you, his eyes glancing over the angry srcthes that littered your arms. “Yeah, you knew id notice them”

“Guess there were a few benefits of growing up friends with a hunter” you joked, you brung daryl into a small hug, the action barely regiersting in your brain before you did it. “Is Sophia alright?” You said. Their eyes widened by quickly shook their heads. “We thought she would be with you”

“She was until, this Asshole came along, there was two so i told her run back to the highway. Keep the sun on her left shoulder” you explained. You heard them sigh in frustration. “Is-is she not back?”

The men shook their heads. You gasped, you lost her. Thoughts of self doubt were fast to fill your mind. “Lets head back before dark”

It wasn’t a warm welcome back, you were greeted to carols cries and screams of anger at you. You wordless walked to the back of a truck. Allowing yourself to be swollowed in self pity as you cleaned the cuts that littered your arms. “Hey” you heard daryl mumble. You felt the truck Lower when he sat next to you. “I’m alright, you don’t have to check on me” you mumbled. “Come on, you think im gunna believe that bullshit. I know you”

“Do you? Remember i asked I don’t need your help? You disappeared left me in our town alone. I know full well you don’t care about this group, how do i know you care about me?” You cried, the tears and feelings finally coming out. “You don’t, but i do know its not your fault. Not many people would run into danger like that”

You sighed, wiping your tears away with muddy hands. “And look were that got us, I told her to run. I should have just let her stay with me.” You mumbled. Daryl didn’t respond. He played with a bolt he was sharpening before he noticed you weren’t with the rest of the group. “If you fin Merle, will you stay?”

“I dunno”

“That’s my point” you said, standing up before leaving. Daryl was left confused as to what you meant. He always thought you understood that blood was blood, he wouldn’t betray his blood. But to you, blood meant nothing. Your family pressure you into being a doctor, watching how you took care of Daryl when he was younger. Your parents didnt care how traumatised you were from our residential, they just wanted a rich doctor.

Once morning had came, rick assembled the group for a large search. Everyone was going besides Dale and T-dog. You had cleaned T-dog with whatever meds you had left, dressed his wound. You knew your attempts would be futile, infection signs were already beginning to show. “Right everyone, use your silent weapon. Stay close, lets move out”

The group moved through the forest, daryl and rick at the front, followed closely behind the rest of the grimes and carol. You had fallen into step with glenn, him being one of the few poeple that didnt shame you for loosing the small girl. “She could be in there” you heard carl speak, the group came to a halt. Watching as daryl approached a blue tent, “you should call out to her, she’ll want to hear our voice” rick said to carol. “Sophia? Sophia its mummy”

Dayl opened the zip of the tent, opening and stepping inside. It was only seconds before he came back out , his face scrunched up with disgust. “What’s in there?” Shane asked. “A guy, did what Jenner did. Opted out”

Before anyone could respond the sound of church bells caught everyone’s attention . “Rick!” Lori called after the man as he sprinted off, following the echo of the bells. Everyone broke out into a run, a spark of hope that maybe the missing girl could have also heard them.

The doors crashed opened as everyone ran down the isles killing the unfortunate groom and bride. “She’s not here rick”

“It can’t be the right church, there's no bells” you said, looking around the empty church. As if on cue, they rang again. You watched as Glenn and the others sprinted outside. You walked over to Carol and sat next to her praying with her, you felt guilty over the loss of her child. You were the last one to tell her she was brave and it was okay, to hold her and hug her. “Carol I'm sorry, I should have kept her closer” you apologised to the mother. She turned and looked at you, tears falling from her eyes. “She was brave, I told her to be strong. She's alive I know it” you said, your voice faltering as you looked at her. “Do you even know the pain of losing someone like that? I don't know if she's alive” she cried. You nodded, “I do, I lost my child. A few years before I became a doctor”

The woman looked at you, shocked. “It was a miscarriage. I will find your daughter and bring her back” you assured the mother. She nodded, “thank you”

You gave her a soft smile and brought her into a hug. “Y/n! We got a plan”

You stood up and walked to the rest of the group, “what's the plan?” You asked Rick leaning up against the entrance of the church. “You,me and Shane will look for her this way. The others will continue to look as they head back to the highway” Rick replied. “Splitting us up, are you sure that's a good idea?” You asked. Rick nodded. “More coverage, you have some skills at tracking and Daryl can help the others” he replied. You nodded, your eyes faltered on Daryl, you watched his fingers itch around his crossbow, his teeth grinding in his mouth. You knew he didn't like that you were going to be so far away from him. “Alright, sounds good” you nodded. Rick smiled, before turning to the rest of the group which gave small grunts of agreement. “Can I come dad?” Carl spoke up. Lori shook her head, “no we don't need to lose you too” she said bitterly.

“I'll look after him,” you said, giving her a small smile. “Like you looked after Sophia?” She retorted. A pained expression fell over your face. “Hey! She's trying to look for the damn kid, leave her alone” Daryl stepped in, looking at Lori with an angry expression. The woman's harsh look faltered quickly apologising to you before returning to the conversation with her husband. You watched as Carol gave you a small nod and smile, finally understanding that at least someone knew her pain. “Ya alright?” Daryl asked. You turned to him nodding. “Yeah I'm good”

“You'll be safe right?”

“Yeah, I'll leave tracks for you in case we don't come back or something” you said to the man. You watched the tension fade from his body, relaxing that he would at least be able to find you. “But I don't need you to fight like that for me Daryl. I don't need your help”

“She had no right-”

“But you do? Who gave you the right to talk to her like that”

“She shouldn't have spoken to ya like that”

“I know, and I'm going to help Rick find that little girl, so I'll see you when I get back”

Daryl looked down at his hands, nodding. Part of you hurt because deep down you knew you were acting out at him, but the loss of this child reminded you of the loss of yours. The one he didn't know you had because he left before he found out.

“Be safe”

“I will Daryl”

You, Shane, Rick and Carl had begun your journey. The men looked around keeping you and the boy safe as you looked for any possible sign of the girl. Any clue she's either alive or dead. “Y/n look!” You heard Carl call out to you. You looked up at the boy, following his finger to spot a deer. “Woah” you said, catching the attention of Rick and Shane. The two stood smiling at the young boy watching him as he walked towards the animal. A moment of peace in this horrible new beginning. That was until the gunshot went off, and the boy thudded.
