You sneak behind the door
“Y/n, here’s no point in trying to hide I know it's you“ Tony said
Not coming out of your hiding place nor responding you sneak deeper into the poorly lit hallway suddenly bumping into someone
Your eyes widen turning around quickly to try and cancel out the noise but its already too late
“ooof“
You hear the figure say
“shhh“ you whispered as quietly as you could holding your index finger to your mouth
“Y/N you don’t actually believe you can scare me, right?“ Tony says his voice getting closer
“So i’m guessing your Y/n??“
You put your hand up to their mouth
“mmm!“
Holding his arms out in surrender “MMK“
“nice try, Y/N“ you heard a stern voice from behind you say
“Uggghhh so close“ you say annoyed, glaring at the person in front of you
You turn around and smile genuinely happy just annoyed that you couldn't surprise him
“TONY!!!!“ you hug him
“Hey kiddo“ he says spinning you around
“You have a kid?!?”
Both of you turn around forgetting there’s somebody else in the room.
You glare at him while Tony introduces you guys
“Y/n, this is Sam Wilson“ he says
“Wilson, this is y/n”
“Your kid??!!” Sam says utterly bemused
“My niece“ Tony clarifies
“ouch“ you scoffed trying not to laugh
“you didn't let me finish“ he says pretending to be annoyed
“Sorry continue great sir“ You bow mockingly
He turns serious facing Sam “She’s like a daughter to me and we all know what a flirt you are but hurt her and you're in trouble with me.”
“Got it“ Sam says
“He's joking” you say as Tony walks away but turns back when he realizes you aren’t behind him
“I can kick your ass myself” you say walking toward Tony but turning back to look at Sam
“Got it“ Sam says surrendering with his hands up

The Next Day
“So you ready to meet the team?“ Tony asks you outside the door of the conference room
“Ye-Yeah“ you say, your breath shaking
Tony looks at you concerned
“You know, we can do this another time.You don’t have to meet earth's mightiest heroes when you know Iron Man.“
You smile
What if they hate me? What if they laugh at me?
“Look, for what it's worth you’re one of my favorite people“ he says as if reading your mind
“That’s because you have to, we’re family“ you laugh the tension in your chest easing a bit
“What’s that got to do with anything?“ he says raising an eyebrow
“Ok i’ll give you that one“ a small smile appearing on your face
“You ready?“
You take a deep breath in
“yeah, let’s do this“
“Plus, even you should know that even if we weren’t family I have very high standards“ he says looking back at you and opening the conference room door
You laugh, finally feeling the clenching hand on your chest let go. Still nervous but not anxious you walk into the conference room and turn to face the team as you hear Tony say
“Guys I called this meeting because there’s someone I want you to meet“
All the conversation stop and all eyes turn to Tony but he looks at you
Breathe
“Hi” you say making all eyes turn to you
“Y/n!!“ you hear a familiar voice say
“Sam“ you say glaring at him jokingly
“Is that your name?“ a girl says smiling, helping you feel at ease
“Yeah, my name is y/n. I’m Tony’s niece. My mother was his sister.“
“You had a sister?“ You hear another girl say with her arms crossed, making her look intimidating
“Yes geez, I don’t have to tell you guys everything. Just wanted to introduce her because she’ll be staying with us“
“Well, I’m Wanda“ says the girl who’s smile put you at ease
“Steve Rogers“ you hear a guy with dirty blonde hair say
“Name’s Natasha Romanoff“
“Vision“
“and your friend Sam, of course“
You laugh
“How do you guys know each other?“ you hear Steve and Nat say
“Sorry don’t take it personally, if you couldn’t tell from before Nat likes knowing everything but Steve’s just curious“ Wanda says
“Its okay, We actually met yesterday“ you say
“Yeah I was walking in the hallway yesterday all peaceful when I was suddenly attacked“ Sam says
You roll your eyes unable to contain the chuckle that escapes
“Oh so its like that”
“Just being honest“ he says holing his hands up and shrugging his shoulders, feigning innocence
“I was trying to surprise Tony when this annoying voice alerted Tony of my presence“
“Well this competition ought to be fun“ Tony says rolling his eyes
Steve chuckles shaking his head and Nat smirks
“Before I forget kiddo there one other person who you haven’t met“
You look at him waiting for him to continue
“Sergeant James Barnes, he’s on assignment right now so you won’t get to meet him till later“ Tony says
“Or ever, considering how much he likes to spends his alone“ Sam says
“Where is she gonna sleep, Tony?“ Vision says
Tony let you slept at a hotel last night knowing how useless it would be to argue with you
“There’s a spare room on the first floor“
“but if you want top floor i’ll trade with you“ Wanda says
“Is it really the first floor if the floor is still above other floors?“ Vision asks lost in thought
They both look at you questioningly
“It's okay i’ll take the first floor“
Here goes nothing

Being an Avenger is not easy.
The long missions, the intense training, the weight of the world on your shoulders…
Everybody on the team has a different way to unwind after a mission: Steve draws, Clint and Natasha compete doing target practice, Thor sleeps, Sam plays video games, Bucky takes motorcycle rides, Tony and Bruce work on side projects in their lab, Loki reads, Peter does his homework and Wanda cooks with Vision.
For you, it’s going to the rose garden behind the Compound.
It’s a bit of a sanctuary for you, Tony allowed you to put tall hedges of roses with a gazebo-like structure in the middle of them facing the lake, only it’s entirely made of vines.
You made it yourself, that’s your power: you can manipulate anything plant-related.
Everytime you finish a mission the team splits up as soon as the debriefing is over and you walk straight here.
You sit on the bench, also made of vines, take out your diary and start writing.
You write about everything, from details of missions to your feelings about the team. From things you did that you don’t want to forget to things that you want to do after you’re not so tired anymore.
The hedges hide you from view and the only thing you can see when you’re here is the lake.
Sometimes, after a particular difficult mission, you don’t even write. You just sit there and look out into the water, the sunshine or moonlight shining down on you, and you feel at peace.
It helps that nobody else ever comes here. The team understands it’s your safe space, and the agents are mostly scared of your powers ever since you grew a giant carnivorous plant and it bit an agent that squeezed your ass during training.
The agent got both taken to the medbay and suspended on the same day, and you got the thanks of about a dozen girls that had the same problem with the same asshole.
You walk out of the conference room, the debriefing of the team’s latest mission just wrapped up, and like usual everyone scatters to their own after-mission ritual.
Today, though, you can’t concentrate on anything.
Your feet take you to the rose garden by reflex, but your brain doesn’t even register you’re there until you sit on the bench.
Today’s mission took a lot out of you, not just because of the amount of magic you had to use to get everyone out safely, but also because it was your fault the team was in so much danger in the first place.
You fucked up your task, Natasha had to step in and save your ass, moving away from her post and making her late for her own task and that derailed the entire mission.
At the end, you had to use your powers to take out the hundreds of Hydra agents at the same time, which is no small feat and made you almost pass out.
Everybody told you on the way home not to worry, the mission was successfully accomplished and everyone made it out safely, but you know that if it wasn’t for your screw up the team would’ve gotten in and out of base without so much as a scratch.
Nobody had fatal injuries, thank God, but Sam got shot in the leg, Clint got stabbed and everyone else had various degrees of injuries because Hydra got the jump on the team.
Because of me.
That was all you kept thinking about. Your brain had a field day making up all kinds of scenarios where your mistake cost someone’s life, a few of them even had the entire team dying because of your stupidity.
You were so caught up in your head that you didn’t even notice someone following you to the rose garden.
Not that you ever do.
If there’s one thing Bucky Barnes knows how to do, is move around undetected. He’s a master assassin, he was trained for this for over 50 years, he knows how to be a shadow.
Except now he uses his skills for good during missions and, occasionally, to follow you.
Not in a creepy way, of course, just to check on you. At least that’s the excuse he always uses so he won’t have to admit to himself that what he does is, indeed, a little creepy.
But he can’t help himself, Bucky knew from the moment he saw you that he was fucked.
The moment you walked into the room to meet the team his heart was yours. You stole it with one simple smile, with one look of your beautiful eyes.
You introduced yourself and shook hands with everyone, but when you looked at Bucky he felt like a light came on and it was just you two.
You shook his hand and he felt like he had to take it off and give it to you, it was yours now. His hand, his arm, his leg, his head, his heart, his soul. Everything he is was now yours, he just knew it.
Then you said his name and he could’ve died right there and then. It was the sweetest sound he’d ever heard, and it was barely two syllables. Every word you said, every laugh and sound that came out of your pretty mouth, Bucky felt like it was all for him. Nobody else mattered.
Bucky knew then he was in love.
But he didn’t know how to approach you. You were like a fairy, like a princess. Growing flowers, always smiling, baking, growing everyone’s favorite flowers and always willing to help, like growing Aloe when Wanda burned herself cooking, or Chamomile to help with Tony’s anxiety, or Valerian roots whenever someone was feeling down.
You were like sunshine and he was terrified he’d kill your light. But he’d be damned if he’d let the world kill it either, he’d protect you with his life.
So he took to following you, making sure you were safe from a distance.
But it’s not like he never talked to you, the more time you spent with the team the more comfortable Bucky got around you and eventually you became friends.
Bucky knew you could take care of yourself, you were one of the strongest members of the team, but he didn’t like it when you were in your rose garden by yourself. The tall hedges made it impossible to see incoming danger, so he kept an eye on you just to be sure.
For his own piece of mind. And you never saw him.
That was Bucky’s actual way to unwind after a mission.
He’d tell everybody he was going for a ride on his bike, but he’d drive it through the woods around the compound and to the other side of the lake where he’d have a perfect view of you without you knowing.
Deep down he knew it was a little creepy, he could just ask you if he could join you, but he felt like you needed your time alone without anyone else around, and he knew if he asked you, you’d say yes no matter what you were feeling, because that’s just the kind of person you are.
So Bucky watched you from afar, always careful not to be seen. He watched you write for hours, it relaxed him to see your beautiful face so concentrated.
Sometimes you’d laugh quietly at what you were writing and those were the only times Bucky was grateful for the supersoldier serum that allowed him to hear such a beautiful sound even with so much distance between you.
But it was torture for him when he knew you had a bad day. Sometimes you’d hug your knees and cry, Bucky could tell how much you’d need a hug, and it killed him that he couldn’t just walk up to you and hug you.
Everytime he sees you cry his heart breaks a little and he always tries to make you feel better when you walk back inside. He doesn’t ask you what’s wrong, he just tries to make you laugh. But all he wanted to do was dry your tears.
You did notice Bucky always seemed to act a little goofy when you're feeling down, like he somehow knew, but you never thought much of it.
You knew he was a very observant person, so you assumed he just saw your mood through your behavior better than most.
Bucky loves hanging out with you, even if it’s just as friends. You make fun of him like with everyone else, you don’t treat him like could explode at any moment, never walking on eggshells around him like most people do.
You’ve never been afraid of him, and he’s glad that you don’t treat him like glass. You treat him like everyone else, and it makes him feel normal.
Everytime time he hangs out with you, you take him back to a time where he was unbroken. You make him feel alive again.
And he falls more in love with you by the second because of it. You’re all he wants, he wants to have you and kiss your lips and never let anyone hurt you. That’s all he can think about, but he knows that’s not gonna happen.
He heard you talk to Natasha and Wanda, heard that there’s someone you’d gone on a few dates with. But Bucky knows that guy doesn’t deserve you, nobody does.
Even Bucky himself doesn’t deserve you, you’re too pure for anyone in this world, but if there’s someone that has any chance of making you happy, Bucky prays to God that that someone is him.
Bucky knows today’s mission shook you deeply. He knows you blame yourself, and no amount of reassurance will make you believe that everything is okay.
So today, for the first time, Bucky actually follows you. He can see your unfocused eyes even as you walk and he wants to be near you, just in case.
He almost walks to you when you curl up on the bench and start sobbing quietly, but he holds back not wanting to startle or upset you further.
He just listens to your soft cries until you stop and compose yourself. You sigh and get up, walking back to the Compound to take a much needed relaxing shower.
But you’re still so much in your own head that you don’t even notice you left your diary on the bench in the gazebo.
Bucky did notice, though.
He’s tempted to call after you and tell you, but something deep down tells him not to. He waits until you’re gone and then walks to the bench, picking up your diary and opening it.
He doesn’t know why, he knows it’s wrong, these are your private thoughts, but he’s just drawn to it for some reason.
When he starts reading he notices you don’t mention any specific names, which makes sense because only you read it, you know who you’re writing about. He reads a page here and there, reading about your missions or lazy days.
He reads about some memories with the team you wrote about, some he remembers and others he probably wasn’t there for, but seeing all these memories from your point of view does something to him.
It makes him feel connected to you, makes him feel like he’s reading your heart and soul, because he kind of is. Then he reads something that captures his attention completely.
You write about eyes blue like the ocean and just as troubled, about a smile that could light up the world. You write about someone with a complicated past that never lost his spark, never lost his love for life.
A man that went through hell, and never once took it out on the world. A man that didn’t ever blame the world, even when he had every right to, choosing instead to protect it.
You filled pages and pages with everything you admire about this man, everything you love about him that you know he hates.
And Bucky feels like every word you wrote, you wrote for him. But could this be him? Could he be the one you talk about in all your stories?
He wants to. He wants this to be him. He prays you’re talking about him. He wishes this could be him… Who is he kidding?
Of course it’s not me.
It’s probably the guy you’ve been dating. Yeah, that’s it. You’re in love with that guy, that much is clear.
Bucky gets to the page where you write about your dates with the guy, but he can’t read them.
He closes the diary, not knowing that you compared your date to Bucky every step of the way. Not knowing that you granted the guy a second date just to be sure he couldn’t compare to Bucky, and went on a third date at a coffee shop just to let him down gently.
Bucky didn’t read how you know he’s the one for you, he didn’t read his own name written in your handwriting, the only name in your whole diary because he’s the only person you never want to forget, even though you know you never will.
But Bucky didn’t read that.
He puts your diary back where it was on the bench and, with his heart broken and his hope that one day you could be his lost, he goes back inside and to his room.
It’s only when you go back to the rose garden after your shower that you notice you left your diary there, but don’t think much of it. Nobody ever comes here anyway, as far as you know.
After finding out you’re in love with someone else, Bucky can’t stop himself from acting differently towards you, which you don’t fail to notice.
It’s not like he’s mean, but your interactions get shorter, like he tries his best to end the conversation quickly.
He no longer sits close to you, no longer tries to make you laugh when you’re feeling down, doesn’t hang out with you as much during your down time and if he does, it’s never just the two of you anymore.
It’s silly to say, but you miss him.
Bucky knows he’s been distancing himself, he knows you’ve noticed and he can see it’s affecting you, but he’s doing this to protect himself.
He knows it’s only a matter of time before you present your boyfriend to the team, the man you’re in love with and he doesn’t want it to hurt more than necessary.
You decide not to push Bucky, knowing he has his reasons to pull away from you. Maybe he’s just trying to deal with all the stress the team’s been under and you don’t want to add any more to that, so you let him be.
A few weeks later the team’s on their sixth mission in just as many days and everyone is exhausted. You’ve been taking down Hydra base after Hydra base, because waiting too long meant losing your chance to shut down their operations for good before they got the opportunity to leave.
You’ve been dividing in smaller teams to take down the bases while still giving the team a chance to recuperate, but this last one was the biggest and required the whole team together, which sucked for you because you were in the last team with Steve and Bucky that took down a base just yesterday, so the three of you got barely a few hours of sleep while you flew to the last base.
You’ve cleared the base, all that’s left is the agents in the courtyard who are really going down fighting. The whole team is outside now, the Hydra agents giving you a hell of a fight. You’re using your magic against your better judgment, giant vines coming out of your arms like whips, covered in poisonous thorns. One touch of that and anyone would go down immediately, everyone except you.
Or at least that’s what you think.
As you’re fighting you can see an agent trying to sneak up on Bucky who’s fighting near you, so you quickly take care of it for him.
Bucky turns around and sees the agent down and then looks at you with that charming smile you fell in love with and winks at you. “Thank you, doll.”
That’s the friendliest Bucky’s been towards you in weeks and you can’t help but smile back with a small blush.
You can see the last agent standing coming at you from your peripheral vision and you quickly whip him with a vine, taking him down as soon as you can so you can turn back to look at Bucky, still smiling at you.
Bucky’s smile drops quickly, though, as he sees your face draining of any color. You barely have the time to register the sting of your own thorn on your arm that you’re already falling to the ground.
Bucky tries to catch you, but he gets thrown back by your magic that goes into defense mode, creating a wall of thorns to protect your now unconscious body.
The team doesn't know what to do, none of them know enough about plants to be sure that these thorns wouldn’t just kill them all.
The only one that would know that is you, the person that’s passed out, or worse, trapped in the midst of a cocoon of thorns.
“Okay, we need to find a safe way to-” Steve starts but cuts himself off almost immediately. “What are you doing?!”
Bucky doesn’t even turn around to answer, too intent on breaking the thorns around you with his metal arm, not caring that the thorns are ripping his clothes and scratching his face, all he can think about is getting to you.
He finally manages to get through to you, but nobody can follow because your magic regrows the thorns Bucky broke, trapping him with you inside the cocoon.
But Bucky doesn’t care, his eyes never leaving your face as he kneels behind you, running a finger softly along your cheek and shivering when he feels your skin is cold as ice.
His mind goes to the worst possibility, that there’s nothing he can do, but his brain gives him some hope reasoning that your magic wouldn’t be working if you were dead.
Right?
He snaps out of his thoughts when he feels the thorns around you vibrate, he takes you in his arms and shields you with his body from whatever is about to happen.
But the only thing that happens is the shade cast by the thorns gets replaced by sunlight. Bucky looks up and realizes Wanda used her magic to lift the thorn cocoon.
“You couldn’t have done that before?!” Bucky barks at Wanda with a glare while carefully picking you up to take you to the Quinjet.
“She’s not the dumbass that threw himself headfirst in a mess of thorns without even considering another course of action!” Natasha came in Wanda’s defense, though she seemed more amused at Bucky’s antics than annoyed.
As the team heads back home in the jet, Bruce examines you and lets the team know you’re still alive but in a sort of coma.
Their relief is cut short when Bruce makes it known that he has no idea when, or if, you’ll wake up.
As soon as the Quinjet lands you’re taken to the medbay and hooked up to machines, an IV in your arm to keep you hydrated.
Bucky holds your hand through it all, staying all night next to you just in case you wake up. He didn’t want you to be freaked out and alone, he wanted to be the first person to see your beautiful eyes open.
When morning comes, though, you’re still unconscious, but Bucky doesn’t lose hope. You probably need a good sleep.
That’s what he tells himself for two, three, four days.
That’s what he keeps telling himself for a week, two weeks. Never once leaving your side, not eating unless Steve brings him food and makes sure he eats before leaving, and using the bathroom of your room in the medbay.
He barely sleeps and, when he does, he dreams of you.
Everyone was getting worried about him, he refused to leave your side until one day Steve came into your room to tell Bucky there was something wrong with your rose garden.
Bucky was torn between staying with you and seeing what Steve was talking about, but decided that it would kill you if something happened to your roses so he had to make sure everything was okay when you woke up.
Because you’re going to wake up.
Bucky follows Steve to your rose garden, and his eyes widen in horror as soon as he sees it. The roses, the hedges, the vines.
Everything is dying.
Bucky’s heart breaks, only one thought in his mind. If your plants are dying, does that mean you’re slowly dying too?
No. That’s unacceptable. You’re not gonna die, not if Bucky has anything to do with it.
He takes it upon himself to take care of your garden, watering it and doing everything he can to keep the roses and vines alive, fooling himself into believing that this will keep you alive.
He stays on the gazebo day and night, sleeping on the bench, spending every waking moment trying to keep a hold of even the smallest part of you.
But it’s not enough. Nothing is enough.
Bucky loses track of how many days he’s been in your garden, sleeping maybe an hour at a time here and there, watering the roses every few hours and crying the rest of the time.
After all it’s his fault, if he hadn’t distracted you none of this would’ve happened. You’d be in your beautiful garden, probably with your boyfriend, and the only broken thing would be Bucky’s heart.
That he could’ve lived with.
But how can he live with the knowledge that he caused your end? That he killed your light? That he killed his sunshine, his hope, the love of his life? He can’t live with that.
Not that he has to.
While Bucky’s spiraling while surrounded by dying roses, inside your room in the medbay you’re finally waking up after almost a month.
You open your eyes slowly, looking around you at the hospital-like room. There’s nobody around and, as you look at the window, you can see it’s really late at night.
You sit up and try to make sense of what happened while rubbing your eyes. The last thing you remember is Bucky’s bright smile, and then nothing.
You look down at your arm and see an IV, which you take out while frowning. How long have you been sleeping?
You carefully get off the bed and make your way outside to your rose garden, just to be sure everything’s okay. It’s not like anyone’s gonna stop you anyway.
When you get close, the moonlight shines on the hedges and you gasp at what you see. Your beautiful roses withering away, the gazebo made of vines dying too.
But the most confusing thing is the sobs coming from the bench, although no one’s sitting on it.
You get closer and see Bucky sitting in front of the bench while hugging his knees and crying softly. You frown and get a little closer before stopping, not wanting to startle him.
“Bucky…” You say quietly and his head snaps up, his eyes instantly meeting yours.
For a moment it feels like he’s trying to decide if you’re real, he reaches out and you extend your hand to take his. That seems to convince him and he gasps.
“Doll…” His voice is barely above a whisper, almost as if he thinks if he makes too much noise you’ll disappear.
“What’s wrong?” You ask him while getting a little closer to him, concern clear in your every feature.
It’s only when you get closer that you see his face full of cuts and you frown. Those are not just any scratches, it’s clear to you that they were made by thorns. “D-did… Did I do this to you?”
You’re kneeling in front of him now, one hand still in his one the other comes up to trace the cuts in his face softly, but he takes your hand in his and kisses your palm.
“I’m okay…” He reassures you.
Just then he realizes, you’re fussing over him when you’re the one that’s been in a coma for a month. “Are you okay? How long have you been awake?”
“I… I just woke up.” You tell him honestly, then look around at the dying roses and vines before looking back at him. “What happened to me?”
“You got stung by one of your poisonous thorns.” He says quietly, his thumbs rubbing circles on your skin while he refuses to let go of you. “You’ve been unconscious for almost a month.”
“A month?!” You’re shocked at the news, not knowing what to say or do, so you just stay there while letting the information sink in. The silence is broken by Bucky after a minute.
“I’m sorry about your roses… I tried to keep them alive, but…” He looks around with a hopeless expression. “I failed you.”
Your heart breaks a little. Does he really think he failed you?
You take a deep breath, then close your eyes and when you open them again a second later everything’s back to normal. The roses are as beautiful as ever, the gazebo just as majestic. It’s like nothing ever happened.
Bucky looks around in awe when he feels you take his chin and you make him look at you.
“You could never fail me.” You say firmly, wanting him to understand you mean it. You look at the cuts around his face and you can’t help the guilt and pain that you feel deep within you. “I’m sorry…”
“It wasn’t your fault.” It’s like Bucky can read your thoughts, he knows all you can see are your faults, and he wants you to know he doesn’t blame you for anything. “You weren’t even conscious. You have nothing to be sorry for.”
“I never wanted to be one of the people that hurt you…” Your voice is a whisper as a tear escapes you. “The world hurt you so much already… I never wanted to be part of that. You don’t deserve it.”
Bucky frowns. He feels like he’s heard those words, but where? No, he didn’t hear them. He read them. He read them in your diary, where you wrote about the man you’re in love with. Could it be possible?
Could I be him?
“It’s me…” He says lower than a whisper, his eyes locked on yours, and it’s your time to be confused now.
“What?” You ask him with a frown while wiping your cheeks.
“It’s me you’re in love with.” His voice is a little louder, but firm. He’s not asking you, he’s making a statement.
Your eyes widen in surprise, you almost take your hands away from his but his hold prevents you from doing that.
“I-I… What?” Is all you can bring yourself to say, confused as to why he’s so sure of it. Are you really that transparent?
“I read your diary…” Bucky says, guilt written all over his face, but at least he’s owning up to it. “You wrote about the man you love… and you wrote the same thing you just told me. It’s me, isn’t it? You love me back?” His voice is more hopeful now, his confident demeanor weavering.
“You… You read my diary?” You say, your mind still playing catch up.
It’s only a moment later that you register the ‘love me back’ and you don’t give him a chance to apologize or justify himself before you’re speaking again. “You love me?!”
Bucky hesitates a moment but nods firmly. “I love you, doll. I’ve loved you since the moment I met you.”
You feel like someone punched you and all the air has left your body. You have no idea what to say, so you don’t say anything.
Instead you lean in and kiss him.
Bucky wastes no time kissing you back, but a thought pops into his mind and he reluctantly pulls back. “What about your boyfriend?”
“Boyfriend?” You frown again, having no idea what he’s talking about. “I don’t have a boyfriend.”
“You don’t?” Bucky feels like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders and he pulls you to straddle him. “What about the guy you went on a few dates with?”
You narrow your eyes at him but decide to table the conversation about how he knows that for another time, so you smile at him and decide to just be honest with him.
“Do you honestly think that anyone could ever measure up to you? Because if you do, you’re an idiot.” Bucky grins and kisses you again.
Maybe he is an idiot. But when he’s the idiot you’re in love with, how much of an idiot can he really be?
It looks like he can be him after all.

“He’s not giving us anything.” Natasha walks into the room, where Wanda and Tony are watching the interrogation room. “He keeps asking for his lawyer.”
“Can’t you like,” Tony imitates punching sounds, “do that to get through to him.”
“It doesn’t work like that.” Natasha rolls her eyes. “At the end of the day, we don’t have hard evidence he is the behind the organization.”
A particular organization has been tormenting the Avengers for a long time now. They’ve started attacks against people and buildings, destroying many important properties and killing people. Yet, they have always hidden any possible leads.
Until now. They finally caught someone, Mr Blight. The group’s clean up crew made a mistake and left evidence on site, bringing the Avengers to him.
After bringing him to the compound for interrogation an hour ago, they’ve gotten nowhere. He’s smart, he knows what they can and can’t do, which is why they have to think something different before they run out of time.
Wanda stares at screen, deep in thought. “Where did you say he worked at?”
“He is one of the owners of the Blight Industries.” Tony glances at the file they have on him. It’s a thin file. “Do you know him?”
“I think his company works with Y/N’s company.”
“Miss bubblegum’s company?” He frowns, looking at the man though the monitor. “Really?”
“Oh, this’ll be fun.” Natasha grins. “She can help us, right?” She turns to Wanda.
Taking out her phone, Wanda starts texting her girlfriend. “Uh, yeah. I think she could help us.” She mumbles, a bit unsure on bringing her into an Avengers mission. “Are you sure this is a good idea?”
Wanda and Y/N have been dating for two months, they’re still in very much their honeymoon phase, neither really talking about work things. However, Natasha and Y/N have been friends for a long time. She actually introduced the couple to each other. She also still continuously reminds them of this, taking great pride into making their relationship happen.
“Oh, yeah. She’ll be able to crack him.”
Tony and Wanda both frown. “Am I missing something here?” He points at Natasha. “How will little miss sunshine help us?”
“You’ll be in for a treat.”
Tony pushes Mr Blight forward when the elevator comes to a stop. He is already looking nervous, he recognizes where they are. “Wait.” Tony looks around the building. “Why did neither of you tell me Y/N is the CEO of the biggest company in the US? I’ve been trying to get a meeting with the boss for ages about Stark Industries, but I always get a negative answer.”
Letting out a short laugh, Natasha leads them in front of Y/N’s office. “Maybe your company isn’t that important.” She mumbles, throwing him a look. Knocking on the door, she opens it for Mr Blight when a faint come in comes from the other side. “Don’t shake too much, she can sense fear.” Natasha whispers with a smirk when he walks past her.
Wanda furrows her brows, moving in front of the window. The blinds are mostly shut, but she can see inside the room through a small crack. Natasha and Tony move next to her, the latter being a lot less inconspicuous about snooping.
“Natasha, care to tell us how she’ll help us?”
“She breaks anyone who walks into that room.”
Y/N is working on her computer, completely ignoring Mr Blight walking into the room. He closes the door behind him, slowly making his voice towards the table.
He clears his throat, but Y/N pays no mind to it. “Should I- sit? Or, maybe..”
“What do you usually do when you walk inside someone else’s office, Mr Blight?” She finally lifts up her head from the screen.
Nodding, Mr Blight sits down to one of the chairs. He lays his hands on his lap, though he can’t stop moving them.
“We have been business partners for a long time, have we not, Mr Blight?” Y/N sits on her office chair with the perfect posture, her hands laying on the table. The look on her face is neutral, but terrifying.
Mr Blight clears his throat before answering, so Y/N wouldn’t hear it shake. “Yes, we have.”
“So,” sighing, Y/N shakes her head, “imagine my surprise when I hear you’ve made an enemy out of the Avengers.” She tilts her head, making Mr Blight gulp. “Do you understand how this looks like to my company, that I have worked so hard to build from the ground up?”
“I- I understand, Miss Y/L/N.”
“See, I don’t think you do.” She stands up, leaning closer to him. “You’re making this more difficult for everyone involved by not telling the truth.”
“Respectfully, Miss Y/L/N, I have spoken the truth. I have no ties w-“
“Have you?” Y/N interrupts him. She stands up properly and turns her monitor to face Mr Blight. “You’re aware that I know everything, correct?” He nods. “So, what you’re telling me is, if I open these files over here,” she points towards the files shown on her monitor, “there will be nothing about you deciding to join the organization two months ago?”
His eyes widen. He tries to hide his expressions, but nothing goes unnoticed by her. Mr Blight opens his mouth to say something, anything to save his name, but nothing comes out.
“On the second of September, you made a donation to a charity, which then send out that money to a third party.” She reads through one of the files. “You’ve been making consistent visits to Washington DC once a week, in the guise of visiting family. However, I remember you telling me your family move abroad last summer, is that right?”
“Well, yes, but-“
“But, what Mr Blight?” Her voice raises a notch. She stares him down, crossing her arms over her chest. “Do you have some other excuses? Or lies perhaps?”
He shakes his head in defeat. “I will talk to the Avengers.” He mumbles. Y/N raises her brow, waiting for something more. “And I will tell them everything.”
Y/N smiles, expressing him to stand up, which he does. “A pleasure. Remember to tell Blight Industries we aren’t working together anymore before you get locked up, would you?” She shakes his hand when he doesn’t know what to answer, before pointing to the door. “You may leave.”
Mr Blight opens the office door, getting grabbed by a SHIELD agent and pulled away. Natasha, Tony and Wanda stay behind, stepping into the office.
“Hi!” Y/N has a wide smile on her face as she waves at them. “So glad to see you guys. I hope I was able to help.” She kisses Wanda before hugging Natasha.
Tony is looking at her with an indescribable look. “You, are a fraud.”
“What do you mean?” Y/N frowns, tilting her head to the side.
“That!” Tony points at her. “You did that while talking to Mr Blight and looked scary, just like witchy woo over here when she does her thing, and now-“ he moves his hands around her and Wanda, “now you look like a cinnamon roll.”
With a grin, Natasha throws her hand over Y/N’s shoulders, pulling her closer. “She has been my secret weapon for years. You don’t understand how many people she has broken.”
Wanda stays quiet as she listens to the conversation. She has only seen the sweet side of Y/N, but she isn’t necessarily disappointed by the other side either.
“I think I like you even more now.” Tony pats her arm. “Now, do you think we could talk about a collaboration between Stark Ind-“
“No.” Y/N states. “There’s a reason I always tell you no.” She smiles sweetly at him. “Now, if you don’t mind, I still have work to do.”
“Thank you for your help, I’ll see you later.” Natasha grabs Tony’s suit and pulls him away from the room, leaving Y/N and Wanda alone.
“Hi.” Y/N smiles.
“Hey.” With a brow raised, Wanda stares at her. “That was different.” She mumbles, wrapping her arms around Y/N’s waist. “I kind of liked it.” Using her magic, she closes and locks the door.
“Oh, really?” Y/N grins, her arms going around Wanda’s neck. She giggles as Wanda starts kissing her neck while pushing her backwards. “Don’t you have work to do?”
Wanda lifts Y/N, so she’s sitting on the table. “I have some time.” With a smirk, she goes right back to attacking her neck.

HABITS OF MOTHER NATURE’S WILL
◤✘WANDA MAXIMOFF SERIES/AU'S | CATALOGUE Wanda Maximoff x Werewolf! GN/Female/Male Reader, (Platonic) Avengers x Werewolf! GN/Female/Male Reader ISSUE NO.#1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOTES: ↳ Finished it nice and quickly, I was a bit unsure about this piece and was probably gonna scrap it before I posted the teaser. I was surprised to see how many people liked the teaser alone, and the taglist life chose me! Didn’t think that would happen so soon sooo that’s pretty cool, so if you wanna join that then let me know! I’m looking at potentially doing some more werewolf reader soon, with a piece (or multiple pieces, idk yet) called ‘The Convict Wolf’. Again I’m not the best at fluff so there is quite a bit of angst in there too as well as some humour. I think this turned more into a slight! Wanda x reader than an actual Wanda x reader. So… sorry bout that. Usage of Y/N as well. WARNINGS! ↳ angst (reader has insecurities/self esteem issues) — Tony being a bit of a dick — some minor language — some weird fluffy humour? — mentions of a “passed relative” in said humour — minor name calling and usage (“mutt and stray/pup”) — and I think that’s it?

↳ WANDA MAXIMOFF TAGLISTS
────────────────────────
Mother Nature decrees that her law is absolute. Her will is to be respected, and all are intended to follow in her great design.
You do not change it. You embrace it.
And this applies to you as well, thanks to your common ancestor, that you shared the habit that left you tracking the red ball Tony kept bouncing against the polished floors like it’s the only thing in existence that mattered to you. And maybe because it did.
How could this happen? No high risk missions or deadly villains to stop from achieving world domination. No, today was one of those special days where you and your fellow Avengers could relax. And with the full moon so close, what better combination?
What you wouldn’t give to suddenly be on a quinjet flying into enemy territory. Nothing like a good fight to get the blood pumping.
For everyone’s sake, you tried to keep to yourself for the past week but you’d exhausted your options. Walks in the park weren’t cutting it - not to mention the other dogs started it first - and you’d already destroyed five punching bags in the gym just prior. The treadmill be damned, you weren’t burning any energy on that.
Your last resort was to sit in the common area with your favoured beverage, a cool rag and some TV to calm the intense wave of anxiety. However, by her divine intervention, your beloved crew had come to flock in.
Mother Nature knew you were a pack animal at heart, as both human and wolf. It was how she made you.
The ensuing anxiety of being in a crowded space enough to put you near over the edge. It’s not like your heart rate only picked up a few hundred beats more when Wanda walked in.
When a few of the new arrivals waved and greeted you, you shared a hesitant yet trying smile and equally reluctant nod in return.
The battlefield was the only place you felt comfortable around your new comrades. But without missions or villains you were still getting accustomed to life at the compound; adjusting to life around people.
You were still considered fresh. A new recruit to the team. As Tony liked to call you… a pup.
Fuck, how you’d bite back your snarls from that term.
Fury assigned you to the Avengers some months ago. And though you had no intention of staying long, the missions kept coming in and a lot more required your specific skill set.
You remember as though it was yesterday that Tony said, “Alright Fury, we’ll adopt the stray pup. Just don’t go ripping up the furniture now.”
Suffice to say, you broke your own record at doing just that in under 3 hours.
“I think they’ll settle in just fine,” Fury had chuckled with a clap to the billionaire’s shoulder.
You shake your head at the memory. Still, if felt wrong to feel certain things for one of your teammates already. It wasn’t like you felt you really had a chance with her anyway.
The thought made your eyes falter from the now still ball for a moment, clutched in Tony’s hand as if it were your heart.
‘Who am I kidding?’ You chuffed silently to yourself, ‘She wouldn’t take a chance on me, I’m a damn mutt!’
Your self esteem issues had to wait though.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
‘Ball.’
‘Ball.’
‘Ball.’
Your entire head at this point tracked the ball’s movement, but your mind was still distracted by Wanda. The idea of her wanting to play ball with you, to spend those moments of intimacy with you. Tony’s words zeroed in from a muffled backdrop to the forefront of your mind.
“And that is why red indeed travels at a superior speed to any other. Ergo, why my suit is red, brilliant, eye catching and can beat anyone.”
You could hear the collective groans and disguised snarks beneath coughs without the noise being present. It was in everyone’s eyes and their scents.
Your eyes froze on Wanda, her striking eyes bore into yours with no hesitation. No fear.
‘How long has she been doing that?’
She offered one of her smiles that made your heart swell and stop at the same time, that made your searing skin cool and rise with goosebumps.
‘She’s so beautiful when she smiles like that.’
If she had one of those smiles then… you knew that grin that spread across her lips and showed a thin line of her teeth.
Your eyes gave away the betraying thought that you knew. Her smile turned grin riddled with mischief spoke volumes.
‘She read my damn mind!’
“I don’t think that is actually possible, Tony,” Sharon said with a click of her tongue and a disbelieving squint to her eyes.
“Oh no, it is,” Tony replied with a nod, “I’ll show you how the colour of this ball determines the speed in which it returns to my hand.”
He held up the ball in his hand, a proud display of its immaculate accomplishment, just a throw away.
Shit.
You bite down on your lip hard to suppress the whine coiled deep in your throat. A deep heat settled all along your neck and your ears.
Wanda still stared at you even in your peripheral.
Tony flicked his hand forward and the ball flew forward, bouncing once against the floor and bound into the wall with a determined thump before Tony caught it again, mouth agape to huff in his triumphant display in tandem with a curt yelp.
A good throw. Bad timing.
Everyone’s eyes had diverted to you. Their attention captured by the sound you made. Even Bucky, the stoic and reserved man who hardly acknowledged anyone with anything other than a grunt, appeared surprised if not the slightest bit intrigued by this new discovery.
You didn’t dare risk a second glimpse at Wanda, the flush in your neck seeped higher up into your face. Not that the shock and interest on everyone else’s faces were easier to process.
But you couldn’t face Wanda’s eyes now.
She had read the racing thoughts you couldn’t keep in line. Who knows how much she read about how alluring you think her scent is, how you whine and whimper whenever you hear her softly cry when in the privacy of her room because you wish to be there with her, her hand running through your fur to comfort herself; to let her know you’re there for her. How much it hurts you that she would never see you as nothing more than the mutt of the team. A beast that maims and runs rampart whenever you lose yourself to anger.
A lovesick pup.
You feared that the hot sting of tears was sure to follow any moment now.
Your fingers tightened against your legs, nails not longer the tamed length you maintained them as. In their stead were claws.
“Something wrong, pup?” Tony teased and you didn’t refrain from the rasped snarl that rose in your chest. Your teeth - and fangs - bared.
Fuck. Why did Mother Nature have to make you the way you are?
“Tony,” Sam warned, eyes cast between the two of you.
“What?” Tony only shrugged as if he wasn’t intentionally pissing you off and embarrassing you at the same time. “I just wanna make sure our new recruit here is alright, I mean, they have been temperamental over the past week. Chewing on expensive furniture and specially crafted improvements to my suit—“
The ball flew from Tony’s hand just as he was about to make a show of the ball again, the unmistakable red, misty tendrils swiftly brought it to Wanda’s hand.
Everyone was silent as they glanced between the red ball in Wanda’s hand and you. Their combining scents overwhelmed you to a new height. The fear that pinned you in place made the skin along your arms radiate with heat, either from the desire to run with your tail between your legs or to get defensive; to ‘wolf out’ as the others had called it. It didn’t help when Thor made an attempt to say something but otherwise thought better not to say what was on his mind.
Wanda eyed the object that held your attention. And you in turn couldn’t help but study her. Something in the way her eyes twinkled with curiosity, her lips pulled to one side as if to contemplate heavily on the fact that this ball held you in a vice grip.
Your short temper as of late, how you’d skulk around, much to the dismay of everyone fearing you had turned into another Bucky. The guy wasn’t that bad, you’d give him credit for that, the guy had a lot on his plate.
But what Wanda was perhaps most interested by that whenever she was present in the same room as you, all that would vanish. At least for the most part.
But to her, you would ask her how she was doing or even compliment her. Little did she possibly know that it was because you had felt a little courageous to take that small leap of faith to tell her she looked good.
But she might as well have that knowledge now.
You weren’t sure if it bothered you or not that she read your mind. Invaded your thoughts. In some weird way, you wanted her to. But you also feared her rejection.
But in the end, it all made sense. No one else pieced it together but her. And this time, she didn’t have to read your mind to do it.
She could read you. She knew you.
“It’s the full moon tomorrow night. They’re anxious.”
You were often lucky to avoid this topic with the others. They’d just chalked it up to catching you at the wrong time, that the mission was a hard one that day and you had some pent up anger to burn. The other half, you’d be out of the compound. Taking a much needed break at your apartment, visiting your sick grandma who they suspiciously noted you saying had passed away years ago three times now. But who was counting.
Never did they realise it all happened around the same time every month.
But Wanda did. She noticed it.
You brave to stare into those eyes you were content to drown in but find something else. It’s mysterious. Not what you’d expect to see in her eyes when she looked at you of all people.
“Y/N, Fetch!” Wanda cooed as she tossed the ball away from her. It’s a primal instinct that ignited within you at that very moment. A natural, engrained sense and desire.
How Mother Nature intended for you to react to survive or to have fun, your skin tingled with the sensation all too familiar.
The shift is over within the blink of an eye, seamless as you launch yourself over Wanda’s sitting body after the ball, large paw-like hands scrapped across the floors as you skid to a halt and the ball captured within the grasp of your maw.
Your tail wags involuntarily and your ears pinned against your head as you bashfully ducked your head at the sound of the others who chuckled and praised your reflexes.
It felt nice. Wanda turned in her spot on the couch to peer over at where you’d jumped over her, chin tucked into her folded arms.
“Nice catch,” she giggled and you swore she could see your blush in this form, “bring it here.”
Hesitant, you take a step forward and then another, your eyes cautious as they wandered over the others in case they deemed your advancements were dangerous to be left unchecked.
Rarely did you allow this form to take around them without the proper surveillance equipment and safety precautions. They already had Bruce to worry about losing control as the Hulk. They couldn’t risk you as well.
But no. They marvelled in their stares, smiles of contentment encouraged you to approach Wanda. You let the ball fall into her grasp with a small whine, ears still pressed back.
“Don’t be shy, Wolfie,” she whispered, the sound soft for only your ears to hear. You liked that nickname. You could only hope she would continue to use it.
Wanda raised the ball again only for Tony to interject. “No! No, you are not playing fetch in this compound, Miss Maximoff.”
Wanda smirked at the look in your eyes. The same one you had right before you tore up all the good, expensive furniture within that 3 hour window.
A few more throws turned into furniture shoved aside to make room. Tony remained in the kitchen, arms folded and a scowl etched hard into his face, it would take a miracle for Pepper to wipe it from his face.
Everyone else was too engrossed in the game of indoor fetch, all having had a couple of turns by now with throwing the ball. Bucky humoured you once and threw it, an approving nod when you caught it. Clint, Thor, Peter and Scott fought hard to get the ball numerous times, Natasha and Wanda were promoted to ‘ball-directors’ so everyone had a fair go.
But Wanda maybe got an extra throw in once or twice - by order of Natasha.
Steve now held the eye catching sphere in his hand, high above his head. Though with your stature in this form, it was rather tricky to keep it away from your snapping jaws.
You yipped and howled in anticipation before Steve tossed the ball and you leapt after it. You caught it before it could bounce off the wall. An eruption of claps and cheers followed immediately, your ears flopped back as you whine softly with that feeling that buzzed in your ribcage.
“Bring it here, Wolfie.” Your ears perked up high and alert at the soft tune of Wanda’s accented voice. A few of the others couldn’t refrain from laughing a little at the sight.
Whenever they had permitted you to shift on mission skirmishes, it was all done through protocol and extensive preparation to ensure you were stable.
And they only saw one emotion when you changed. Aggression.
To finally get the chance to play and be comfortable in your own fur felt good. Shit, well beyond good.
“I was promised the next throw! Come on, give the ball here, Y/N,” Sam called with an outstretched hand.
Even if Sam had a point, you couldn’t stop yourself in your approach towards Wanda, who now was crouched down with her hand out to receive the ball.
Her eyes were soft in their gaze as they pierced through the veil of your own. It was like she could see the humanity deep within you.
Her magic touched you differently, prickled against the shell of your mind, you welcomed her in.
‘I see you as more than you realise.’
A whimper crept up your throat in response, ears tucked back and eyes often shrouded with the thirst for carnage grew to relax. Become tender in the embrace of her eyes - her soul - touching yours.
Your fur bristled suddenly and you shook your head with a huff. You dropped the ball into her hand and she threw it down the long hallway.
You bound after it, your claws clinked against the tile floor, your breath hot in ragged pants as you gave chase. Each bounce of the ball echoed faintly in the back of your mind, too occupied by the words Wanda spoke through your mind.
It was the first time you’d heard her voice in your head. And you enjoyed it. It settled you into a sense of calm.
You didn’t register the elevator doors open ahead of you, Nick Fury stood with files tucked under his arm.
Your eyes shot open and you swore you saw his unpatched eye mimic yours. Your weight was too much to control with the momentum you had backed up behind your pursuit in a cramped hallway. You skid to a halt but slipped forward, the force of your body knocked Fury and yourself back into the elevator.
A series of cringed groans and gasps reminded you of your teammates as the elevator doors closed behind you.
You’d knocked Fury into the buttons and now, your destination was another floor.
Sheepishly, he could tell, you whine a pathetic sound in your apologies. You shuffle in the elevator that was almost too tight for the two of you to fit with you like this.
“So,” Fury said after a few moments of silence, eye intently watchful of the floors you both now visited. Some had agents give pause and a receptionist even dropped her cup of steaming coffee at the sight of you.
“What brought the wolf out?”
He turned his head slightly when you grunted, ball held up in your mouth to show him what had ensued before his arrival.
It felt like hours that the rest of the team stood in their places, eyes stuck on the elevator door you and Fury both disappeared into.
“Do you think he’ll be mad?” Wanda asked, voice coated in a toxic amount of unease.
She was scared what would happen to you. As a matter of fact; everyone was scared.
The government knew just enough and that was a hard - yet private - case that was not disclosed with the public.
Your existence and your species as a whole had to remain top secret. One slip up that was determined out of hand would grant you a one way ticket to who knows what for punishment.
“It’s okay, Wanda,” Clint assured, “I doubt Fury would do anything like that. I mean, he brought them to us.”
“He’s right. No way would Fury do something like that,” Steve added, firm in his judgement or perhaps what he hoped for.
“We will… figure it out if it comes to that,” Tony sighed from his place. Not often did Tony jump to your defence in cases such as this.
But in the end, you’d proven yourself mostly to be trustworthy.
He had some inkling of reason to believe you wouldn’t cause intentional harm to the team.
The elevator pinged and everyone held their breath as the doors slid open.
Fury and you stood side by side, gazes directed down the hallway towards your team. Your eyes immediately sought out Wanda who gave you a smile but her brows were furrowed.
Fury held up the ball as he strutted forward, like an obedient pup, you followed close to his heel.
“Next time, take the game of fetch outside,” he advised and threw the ball forward and Tony caught it swiftly.
Another good throw. Really bad timing.
You were still hyped up and because of that, you charged forward and closed the distance within a matter of milliseconds.
“Wait no—!” Tony grunted as he was pinned to the floor beneath your weight. “Get. Off!” He growled and you slinked away from him with your tail tucked.
The others did little to hide their laughs at Tony’s unfortunate expense.
“Good job,” you caught Bucky mutter to you as you joined Wanda’s side. You chuffed rather proudly and your head held high.
Steve aided Tony from the floor. “Alright, Fury. We’ll note that down.” Steve flashed a toothy smile and wink your way.
“I have a mission briefing. Ya’ll better buckle up and dress for the cold. You’re going on an undercover operation located in Alaska.”
“Alaska?” Wanda asked in sync with your curious head tilt, ears flopped to the side.
“Alaska. And you also have a guide present right now who is familiar with the territory.”
It didn’t take a second long for your team and yourself to gather what Fury meant, his single eye on you knowingly.
Fury left some time later after he handed the files over that provided more information on your new task in Alaska.
Wanda turned and knelt down in front of you, a hand ran through the thicket of your fur. The act itself made your eyes droop and your chest rumble. Wanda couldn’t keep the full, toothy smile to spread on her lips.
“I think this gives us all the perfect opportunity to play more fetch with our beloved wolf.” Wanda’s words didn’t go unnoticed by the numerous hums of agreement. Truly you felt seen by them all. For the first time perhaps ever, you felt accepted.
You even looked to Tony who shrugged with an eye roll. “I suppose I could indulge in a couple throws myself. So long as I can test my new theory of what travels faster: the wolf or the red ball?”
“Wolfie,” your team chimed in claim of their theory right there.
Your pack that Mother Nature intended for you.

----------
'"Why are you doing this? I'm sixteen now; I can't be stuck in my room like a prisoner all my life." You yelled to your moms.
"Hey! Don't raise your tone with me, little one." Natasha said.
"Girls, calm down, please." Wanda tried to appease the tension. "Nat, you know she's exactly like you, so don't give her any reason to scream more than necessary. And Y/n, baby girl, we already talked about this."
"But why? It's not like I can't defend myself. I didn't train with you two to just stay all my life in school." You argued.
"We don't train you to be a hero, but to protect yourself. We don't want you to be hurt." The sokovian said, and you rolled your eyes with a loud groan.
"Not this card again. It's always the same thing with you."
"Where did you get this attitude?" Nat raised her voice. It started to really become something bad.
"Nat please…"
"No, no. I'll not let her talk like that. Hear me out if we say no avengers mission for you; that means NO AVENGERS MISSION FOR YOU." You looked at her, then at Wanda, but when the witch nodded, you snapped.
You turned around and walked straight to your bedroom, slammed the door, and used your power to lock it.
In the living room, Wanda had to block the redhead to rush to your room.
"How can she be so stubborn?" The Russian asked no one.
"I think from who she got that." The Maximoff twin remarked. "But don't worry, she'll be back when she's hungry, and we will try to talk about it more carefully this time."
The redhead sighed before crashing down on the couch. "I hope you're right. I don't want her to be hurt, but it will be worse if she hates us forever." She said with a defeated expression.
"Don't worry, it's just a phase; it will pass… I think." Her wife said after sitting next to her.
"Sometime I feel like I'm not the mother she deserves." The ex-spy confessed.
"Hey, don't say that. You're exactly the mom she deserves. We couldn't be a family without you."'
Some footsteps stop in front of your cell, making you raise your head. And when you thought nothing could be worse, you totally forgot about that.
You just stared at the woman in front of you without saying anything. Thankfully or not, she didn't seem to want to be the one to engage in any conversation. The atmosphere started to be tense until you both heard new footsteps. You knew them like the back of your hand, and it was the same for the other woman.
"Hello Wanda." Natasha greeted her, earning a shocking expression from the Sokovian.
"But how?" The witch asked quietly.
"It's a long story, but we'll talk about it later. First, I need you to follow me." The Russian said. You recognized that's tone. It was the 'Russian irritated spy tone' that meant that whatever was happening, you knew that they had a lot to say.
~~~~
In the meeting room, the atmosphere was tense. Wanda was there in front of the people she could almost call family a few years ago, but now... Now, a lot of things have changed. She lost the last thing that made her smile when she lost Vision, and when she tried to find some comfort alone when everyone left her, everybody seemed to be against that.
Steve took a deep breath, earning almost the attention of everyone. But he was not the one who talked first. "So, are we just staying there and looking at each other?" Sam asked.
"We are waiting for someone." Steve announced, earning a curious look from Wanda, but the Sokovian didn't have time to ask anything before she heard footsteps entering the room. Furry came and sat in front of the witch while everyone still stood, a little unsure of how to act in front of their ex-coworker.
"I hope you didn't lose yourself coming here, Maximoff. You didn't write us any letters, so I thought that maybe you forgot about us." The one-eyed man said.
"I'm not the one who gave up on you." The now ginger woman replied.
"I like the new look, by the way." He said completly ignoring her acusation. "I don't know if any of them told you why you are here." When the woman shook her head to say no, he nodded and showed her the footage of your intrusion. "As you can see, we recently received the visit of a strange girl who said she was..." He snapped his fingers a few times, trying to find the missing word.
"She said her name was Scarlet." Natasha finished.
"That's right, thank you, Romanoff. Yes, she said her name was Scarlet, but it's not the strangest thing. Look at this." He said showing her when you used your powers to knock down the mightiest heroes. "See, I don't really believe in hazards. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that she had anything to do with you. At least until you prove me the opposite."
"And what am I supposed to do?" Wanda asked, even if she knew.
"I need you to investigate her mind to know what she wants. She said that she wanted to go back 'home, but I think she may hide something from us. Like, why does she fight perfectly like one of my best agents, or why does she actually have some power similar to  yours?"He explained. "I'll let you two weeks to resolve this mystery." He said while he made his way out of the room.
"And why should I do this?" Wanda asked, making the man stop and look at her.
"We both know that the young Maximoff is somewhere here, and I'm sure that she didn't give up the idea to help people. Roger will show you your new room." He said, finally, before leaving for good. The silence quiclky filled the room, making the Sokovian a little nervous.
You were lying on your bed trying to process what happened when you heard someone stop in front of the door. You didn't have time to look at them before the door opened, and they entered.
"I never thought that someone would resume Dreykov's work." They said while you sat up to look at them. "I don't know if you know me, so let me introduce myself. I'm…"
"Nick Furry. I already know you." You replied, making the man in front of you chuckle.
"And who are you? Except Scarlet Widow."
"What do you mean?"
"I led the biggest group of spies in this country; do you really think that I will content myself with a false alias?"
"You led it so well that you didn't know that some Hydra agents were in your rank." You mocked.
"Oh, a funny one, I see." He paused for a moment to analyze you. "I don't know who tried to copy Romanoff, but I need to assume that they conditioned you well." He said, making you look confused.
"What do you mean?"
"You're not here to kill her because you would already try it when you came here." He continued ignoring your interogation.
"You didn't rep-"
"Maybe they sent you to kill Wanda and take her place as one of the Avengers."
"Can you stop-"
"Except your eyes, you look like a perfect mix between them. It's really impressive. And do you know what is more impressive? You don't seem to care about being trapped here. I don't know what Barton did to your little weapon, but it sent a signal somewhere far away, almost too far to be caught." He stated.
"But you did." You finshed now totally serious.
"It's obvious that you're not from here, so what are you? A khree? A Skrull?"
"I'm a human!"
He stood up and looked around before making his way to the door. "We all have our secret Ms.Scarlet but they will never last forever." He informed you before leaving.
Family matters - Wanda x romanoff!Reader
Summary: You have a secret you don't want to tell anyone for fear of being too late. Will a certain little witch manage to let you in? And above all, your relationship with Natasha will always be the same?
Warnings: angst, mourning elaboration, guilt, use of magic, physical injuries, nightmares, robbery | 16+ DNI
A/N: Strangely, I wrote it with incredible speed. But I think I did a good job. Now it's your turn to judge
The Compound is huge.
There's everything from a shooting range, to multiple break rooms, to some mega-equipped labs, not to mention bedrooms.
Obviously there are many, there will be many people who will have to sleep here.
Some more than others, those like you and the twins who have no one out there in the world will stay here.
Since you two girls were the last to arrive, you had to make do with the rooms. Luckily there were two rooms quite far from Pietro's, and after you sat through a discussion on why you go so far from his room you laughed enough accompanying the brunette to your respective two new rooms.
At least, your room also had another positive side. It was opposite Natasha's
This time it only took you a quarter of an hour to rearrange the things from out of the boxes, also because compared to the room in the tower this one is much bigger, and then yes Wanda was right, with magic it would have been faster.
Oddly it had been a whole day since you had seen anyone else but Wanda so you are surprised when you finally decide to leave the room and as you turn the corner into the kitchen you find Pietro, the last person you wanted to see, who was chatting with her sister while she was cooking something.
You weren't really angry with Pietro but he made you remember something you just wanted to forget so as quickly as you left the room you come back in tears, slamming the door and closing it.
In addition to the twins you hadn't noticed that there were also others present, all puzzled when you ran away.
Maybe only two people could tell what was going on with you, and those two were Wanda and Natasha. However, the redhead seemed not to be there at the moment, so whatever Wanda was cooking, she let go and ran after her, leaving everyone stunned.
You were sick,
why couldn't you save her?
Why did Pietro yes and she didn't?
These were the questions that kept running through your head as you circled the room choking on tears when you heard a knock on the door.
Wanda seeing that you had no intention of opening her decided to act. "Y/N, it's me Wanda, please open up" she tried to coax you softly, unfortunately you were stubborn and broken so you refused to even let your presence be known.
She then tried to open the doorknob with her magic but you apparently sensed what she was doing and were thwarting her.
She had no other choice, she sat on the floor with her back against the door and she thought about what to tell you. "You know I still have to thank you for saving Pietro's life. I don't know if I would have been able to go on without him. After our parents died it was just us two against the world, we protect each other."
You were still in a panic when she started to speak but the more she spoke the more she managed to calm you down, in the end you too put yourself on the floor against the door.
She heard you were on the other side of the door and she knew you were crying because she could hear small choked sobs, you were in pain and she couldn't understand why and it made her feel bad.
"Do you remember the other day, before leaving for Sokovia, when I told you that I had been there too? Well the last time I saw my parents alive I was 10 years old. -
- It was evening and my father came home, we didn't have much money it was barely enough to survive, he had a menial job, he sold dvds of American sitcoms"
"That night, they made me choose what to watch during the tv night, you know during those moments we couldn't speak Sokovian and we had to talk another language. That's how I learned English you know? I had my favorite episode, number 21 of the second season of 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' put on."
"All of a sudden as we were watching it dark. It was just a bomb exploded a few floors below us, and when I regained consciousness Pietro found me and we hid under the bed." now she too was starting to cry, less repressed than you remembering her last moments with her parents.
Despite sobbing she decided to keep talking to you, she had to make you feel better at all costs.
"Then a missile fell just a few feet away from us, on that missile was a name… Stark" she broke off trying not to think of her growing hatred in her heart for the man a few rooms away.
"We sat down there for two long days, hoping that bomb wouldn't go off. In fact it didn't go off, maybe the only good thing from that shitty day. We ended up in an orphanage until we were 18 and then abandoned on the street."
"Full of rage and reckless as teenagers we saw in Hydra a way to defend our country and take revenge. So we ended up as volunteers for Strucker's experiments and from there with our new powers we met all of you." she then concluded calming her sobs and wiping her tears on the sleeves of your hoodie.
Hearing those words, all the pain they exuded, all that anger. Maybe you could tell her your secret, something even Natasha doesn't know.
Your mind has been off limits to her ever since you ran into the room, so when new waves of pain pass through her, pain not hers, she knows you're moving.
When you finally unlock the door you let out a single word. "I had a sister" you almost whisper for fear of admitting what you fear most.
She sees you scared, she understands that it's not easy for you to say what you're saying so she closes you in a hug as you enter the room and closing the door with red tufts.
Don't worry, no one else will know if you don't want to.
Take a deep breath knowing it will be hard to talk from now on. "I had a sister, her name was Nora. She was my big sister, basically we've always been together since I was born." you look up, with a smile watered down by tears you tell Wanda the most beautiful part of your life.
"Always smiling, she never let life get her down, and when you had some problem, any one, she would help you to solve it."
"You know this necklace I'm wearing, this lightning bolt, she gave it to me for my 15th birthday. Since she had to go to college, I was worried that she would leave and forget about me, but she gave me this necklace and said 'So I can never forget my little sister'. I've been wearing it every single day since then, after all it said that as long as I wore it she would always remember me." you try to explain, holding the pendant hanging from your neck in your hands, sometimes with trembling sighs.
"She seemed like a really good sister" Wanda encourages you by making circles on your back. You nod without answering, too overwhelmed with held back tears.
At this point, seeing you already about to collapse, she makes you sit on the bed before sitting next to you, ready to take you when you can't take it anymore.
Do you wish to continue? You don't have to if you don't feel like it
You hear the words she says to you mentally, for a while you hesitate but then you understand that you have to tell someone, you can no longer maintain this weight.
"No, I have to do this, I have to tell someone" you shake your head as you wipe the tears from your cheeks.
"A few days before she left, we were walking down the street wandering through shops looking for the last things she needed to bring."
"We were talking on a sidewalk when a suspicious guy came around the corner running in the opposite direction to us, came up and almost he wouldn't knock me down if I didn't dodge him."
"The guy ended up in the middle of the road and almost got hit by a truck if - " you can't finish the sentence because you almost get out of breath
" - Nora hadn't jumped to save him by being run over in his place." you whisper weakly reaching the limit of endurance, you can't take it, you collapse in a pool of tears and moans.
Two arms wrap you in a desperate hug as soon as you start crying louder and the only moment they let go is when Wanda gets out of bed and sits on your lap to be closer to you. Not even she knows what she's doing, she usually wouldn't be so emotional but with you in this situation she just comes naturally.
You two stay in that embrace for a long time, you hide your weeping face in the crook of her neck as she continues to hold you close and gently stroking your back.
If someone would have entered, even if Wanda would not have allowed them, they would have seen two girls sitting on a bed embracing, while the one sitting was probably crying.
This is what would have been seen on the outside, while many conversations were going on inside
You feel bad. Why did you say that? Now surely Wanda will go away and she will leave you alone like everyone else does.
Hey hey hey I'm not going anywhere. I stay here with you. I'll hold you until you feel better alright? You don't have to answer, I got you, now you can let go.
All you could think or feel was Nora and that hurts, you miss your big sister very much and you feel responsible for her death.
After all, if you hadn't dodged the guy as hard as you could, you would have fallen and scratched yourself but now Nora would still be with you.
But strangely even though you were crying Wanda's warmth comforted you, she was quietly singing something to you, you don't understand what she's saying but you assume it's Sokovian and you let yourself be lulled by the sweet words as you vent all your two years of secrecy.
When the moans have subsided into little sobs it's night time and you're very tired but you really don't want Wanda to go away, you don't want to go over everything by yourself.
"Can you stay with me tonight? Please" are the first words you've said for hours and you're begging her with your eyes still shining. "Of course" she can't help but please you, also because she herself had no intention of leaving.
It's been a while since you two slept, for the second night in the same bed, and you were starting to fidget.
Wanda awakened by your movements turns to check on you before seeing red for a few moments and then black.
For the first time, you'd had a dream so violent it was projected into Wanda's head.
When she starts seeing again she's in an apartment, with a younger version of you and two older strangers. 'You forgot about it. You forgot about her!' she hears your desperate younger version referring to what she understood to be your parents.
'How could you forget about her. She is your daughter!' you look sadder, this makes Wanda's heart ache even more because she understands what's going on.
'She was your daughter. My big sister. Nora.' she sees you get down on your knees on the ground with your face in your hands and start crying and muttering.
'I want my big sis back...she forgot about me...she promised me' you repeat like a mantra swaying back and forth.
Wanda can see and feel all the pain you are in, you miss your sister, you feel responsible for her death and your parents are not helping.
Then a bigger and bigger red wave begins to spread out from you, she feels the great power in you fueled by the pain, and she knows what happens next.
You destroy the building, remain the only survivor and then Steve finds you.
When she emerges from your dream she inhales a breath of air to materialize what she had seen.
How much suffering you had experienced, you didn't have time to dispose of it because you had to become a superheroine, a bit like her and this helps her even better to understand how you are.
She knows you need to feel happy now that you're sleeping so when you turn and try to wrap yourself around her, she lets you do it, actually she starts cradling your head when you put it on her chest.
Then she makes a decision, she will make you have the most beautiful dream of her, then she puts her fingers on your temples and they start to glow red as she browses through your memories.
When she finds the only happy memory you have of these times she is surprised to understand that it is a moment with Natasha, surely you have a very strong bond.
She must be very attached to you, she seems to act like a mother only you don't understand it or don't want to admit it.
There is something in that moment that you like so much and then she decides to make you relive it several times at least until you can accumulate enough hours of sleep.
——————————————————————
When you wake up, you're still clinging to Wanda, and to your surprise she's still asleep.
You take the time to analyze her whole face, every detail of her. She's sleeping blissfully, and since you've known her you've never seen her so relaxed, she even seems happy.
She no longer wears the many rings that she usually wears, you think she took them off before you just don't remember when, and this gives you a better way to see her hands.
Analyzing, however, a strange sensation becomes more and more insistent, as if they were many butterflies fluttering in your belly.
When you lay back down to admire the ceiling, you accidentally wake Wanda with your movements.
"Hey" she still sleepy try to say hello
"Hey you. Thanks for staying". you give thanks as you think back on everything she has done for you.
"I would do it again. But I have to tell you something" she says, leaving you time to refuse, seeing that you remain impassive, she takes it as a yes.
"Tonight I saw how your parents died. Don't take it badly but they asked for it. But then I also saw something else, the relationship you have with Natasha is something special. Don't miss the chance to have a family again" she explains, attentive to your possible reaction, mainly you remain shocked but then something changes.
"Do you think I should talk to her? I like being with her, she reminds me of when I was little. I feel safe." you speculate thoughtfully, while you think about whether she'd better run to the bathroom.
Don't even think about it!!!!
"You should talk to her" at the end she says to you and you say "Later I will".
And so you both stare at the ceiling in silence for quite some time.
——————————————————————
This was four months ago.
Since then you still haven't found the courage to talk to her and you've reduced conversations with Natasha to a minimum, limiting yourself to the bare essentials only during missions.
Your relations with the rest of the team have also worsened, you hardly ever spoke to them and only if forced.
However, this does not apply to new team members, with whom you have formed a strong friendship.
You apologized to Pietro and even if initially he didn't understand why, when Wanda explained the situation to him in private, the young man understood everything. You didn't know Wanda had told him, but you honestly didn't care, you didn't have to pour your guilt feelings on him especially if he didn't know the cause.
Wanda on the other hand was your breath of fresh air, your happy little moment, she was the only one who saw you laugh or even just talk. You spent most of your time together either in her room or yours, very often falling asleep in each other's beds after a tiring day while watching something on television.
You've discovered that in addition to powers, you and Wanda also have many things in common, such as a boundless love of sitcoms and an exceptional cooking ability.
In fact, the only other environment in which you felt at ease was the kitchen only when Wanda was there with you, otherwise you would have been almost a mirage due to the speed with which you entered and exited.
In all these shared moments she (in four months) hasn't even brought up that whole issue once, because if you had to do something, the only one capable of putting an end to it was you.
With Pietro the story was complicated, initially you saw him when he left his sister's room just before you entered exchanging embarrassed glances.
Then slowly over the weeks those looks turned into brief exchanges of words and then into real conversations, involving Wanda every time too.
When you weren't spending time with the twins, you were either on some solo mission or working out in a deserted gym.
Once you all trained together and it ended badly, at least for Pietro. He ended up crashing into a wall while he was trying to dodge two attacks from us girls regardless of where he was running.
He came away with some broken bones, but thanks to the accelerated healing he recovered by the end of the day. From that day you decided that training in three was dangerous so you created shifts of two.
You haven't said more than three words to Natasha in four months and honestly she doesn't know why.
Everything should be fine right?
She doesn't know and that's why she has to force you to tell. Only that she will need a little help, or rather two little helps.
This is why she is now in the kitchen and there is no shadow of you, but she is not looking for you, she is looking for the twins and they are right there. "Hey guys, what are you up to?" she approaches the two Sokovians completely masking her intentions.
The two exchange a quick glance before Wanda speaks. "Let's cook" she replies bluntly continuing to stir a mixture.
The redhead nods thoughtfully, as if what they're doing really matters to her, and subtly expresses her intentions. "Have you seen Y/N?"
"Nope" promptly Pietro lies shamelessly covering up your true position. "It's not true! You two always know where she is. Basically you're always together" she complains then annoyed by their too much loyalty, it's not that she annoys her it's just that now she would like it to be less.
"She doesn't want to talk to you Romanoff" Pietro gets up from the counter and stands next to his sister.
To which Natasha sighs, they are such good friends for you. "I know guys, but I need your help. She has to tell me something but honestly she can't find the courage, I know she's always been shy" she admits, leaving the two dumbfounded, she knows you really well, they can be trusted then.
"Help with what?" Wanda asks, still a little wary.
They created a plan to lock you in a room with Natasha long enough for her to talk to you, and since you were returning from a mission with Vision (the humorless being) the first place you would go would be Wanda's room.
So while Wanda waits for you as planned on her bed, Natasha hides in her bathroom ready to go out when the door lock clicks.
You're tired, the mission went quite well but Vision is really boring, sure you understand many of the scientific things he says but it's not the right time and this bores you, maybe you even miss Tony's selfishly sarcastic jokes a little.
And above all you can't wait to hug your new best friend and hear something other than philosophical thoughts about human beings.
What you don't expect is that when you enter her already open room she's on her bed and looks at you scared. "Hey Y/N, I forgot something in the kitchen, I'll go get it for a moment and then come back, you can stay here" she says before being carried away by Pietro leaving you alone with his bluish trail.
You hear the lock click and then you see the redhead you don't expect come out of the bathroom and then you understand.
You are trapped
All the alarms start ringing in your head,
you don't want to tell
or you want?,
what if she doesn't want to?
Talk to her she wants it too
hear Wanda prompt you in your head and thank yourself for being as much a telepath as she is for having this amazing form of non-verbal communication. "Alright I'll tell her, but if it goes wrong I'll blame you" you scream making sure wherever she is she has heard you and you prepare yourself for the ordeal that awaits you.
" Что за проблема, моя малышка?" (What's the problem my child?) she asks you worried
"Ты хочешь говорить по-русски? Серьезно?" (Do you want to speak in Russian? Seriously?) you argue nervously about the situation you're in
"Вы сказали, что это для чрезвычайных ситуаций. И это чрезвычайная ситуация!" (You said it was for emergencies. And this is an emergency!) she takes your angry tone, totally changing the initial setting of the conversation.
"If I have to speak I prefer to do it in English. I'm too shocked to do it in Russian." you say offended, but you're just stalling and she understands it from the way she looks at you.
"Well then, talk, I listen"
It's hard but you finally do it.
You talk to her about Nora, about your relationship with her and how you feel responsible for her death. You also tell her about your parents and how they died and especially the trigger of your anger.
But then you talk about the last few months trying to apologize and I tell her about what you did, as if she didn't know, she had seen all the cameras in the compound just to see you again. You tell her about how you became friends with Wanda and her brother and how happy you feel when you can talk to them.
She finally gets it all, all the nights you spent crying and moaning in your sleep, you were thinking about your big sister and your parents how you missed them and how guilty you felt about how they died.
She is happy that in the last few months you have found people who have been close to you and from the way you talk about it you really enjoy spending time with the twins, she couldn't wish for anything else.
But then comes the speech, the one about your relationship. "Since you came here two years ago you've made me feel something I never imagined I'd feel, a constant fear of hurting yourself but also an overwhelming amount of love. But it's not the kind of love between engaged is something motherly, something I never expected to be... a mother"
"Now, I know you have a mother, but I don't think she would want you to be alone. In that sense too. So if you want I can try to be some kind of mom" she looks at you anxiously after she finishes her speech looking for signs of rejection, but there aren't any.
You throw yourself into her arms with tears of joy in your eyes. You leave her suspended with your action until you gently whisper to her "You are already my mom".
You knew she was from the first night she was close to you during one of your meltdowns, you just felt fear that you were somehow cheating on your biological mother. But now that you knew that she too felt the same way, the road seemed easier.
Perhaps your mother from wherever she is she will be scolding you, but shouldn't a mother want only the best for her children?
Now your best was clearer, you built a family without your knowledge and found in Natasha a new mother in time of need.
If Natasha thought she couldn't be happier when she heard you calling her mom her heart melted completely. After a long time she was truly happy.
When the hug between mother and daughter is finally over you fixed your slightly messy hair. "I have Wanda to thank," you say shaking your head and thinking of your dear friend.
"She's a good girl" she replies with a slight wink at which you make a face. "Don't start with mom's advice" you beg her playfully laughing embarrassed by your mother's insinuation.
"I'll have to start from something" she makes fun of you and you reply rolling your eyes and giving your hand to your face, surrendering to such lightheartedness.
——————————————————————
You truly thanked Wanda. Since she came into your life she has always helped you and from now on you promised yourself to always be there for her. Whatever it takes
After that day your life was turned upside down. Now you didn't wake up alone anymore, Natasha was always there to wake you up even when you fell asleep in Wanda's room, sure sometimes you just wanted to stay in bed a little longer without disturbing your roommate but you were thankful to your new mum for give you all these attentions.
If breakfast wasn't ready, you prepared it for everyone, knowing their tastes and habits, many times you cooked it with Wanda while you two happily sang.
Steve would always arrive at that point, up since dawn, and he would greet you like the true gentleman he is while he took a bottle of water and left. And like two teenagers then you sneer at the compliments while continuing to cook all sorts of delicacies.
Cooking of course as well as singing and dancing you talk about your plans for the day, and every time you are disturbed by an energetic Pietro who runs around the room to distract you before slipping in to give his sister a kiss and steal a plate of bacon and pancakes.
You really don't mind, you know that's how he is, and then your second favorite moment of the morning always comes after that.
The one where Natasha comes in and she gives you a kiss on her head before taking her plate and sitting down near the counter. The best time, your whole family, together.
Now your days have changed and you spend a lot of time away from your room preferring the gym and the laboratory (now that Tony has taken a sort of gap year you are free to give vent to your free intellect in the laboratory) where you finally keep your promise, with Wanda's help you create her first suit. Obviously you don't stop there, you are committed to creating the best outfit for her twin too, preferring heat-resistant and very elastic materials.
Now the time you spend training is with many more people and not at the most unusual hours, you have resumed training with your mother like four months ago and she is surprised at how much you have improved, while you still continue to train with Wanda to master the best your powers and develop some special tactics.
The missions you do now aren't so solitary anymore and you're almost always assigned in teams with either one or both of the twins or Natasha and your espionage skills you can tell are really improving.
Now you always spend your free time with Wanda, but now in the common room sharing books, TV series and various chats.
That's what you're doing right now, sitting next to Wanda on the couch as you watch an episode of Bewitched for the umpteenth time.
You're so involved that you don't notice Natasha approaching her until you find her in front of her with a toothy smile and her hands behind her back.
"What are you keeping back there but?" you ask standing up and trying to see what she's holding on to, but she always manages to elude you. "We did it" she tells you, taking her hands away behind her back to reveal some documents, the ones for my adoption.
Immediately a smile spreads across your face and you're almost incredulous. "Are... those... are those documents?" you stammer out loud in disbelief at the situation, finally, but you didn't expect it so soon.
She nods her head joyfully and you're elated.
You lock her into a bounce hug because you have too much energy to spread for the good news that you can't help but move. "I pushed a few buttons, and asked for some Avenger favors but I finally did it, now we can make this official" she comforts you as you look over your mother's neck to see Wanda watching the loving scene familiar in front of her and a little sorry, you wish she still had her parents.
You are already part of my family, Wanda, don't forget that
Thanks Y/N but this is your moment with your mom and you shouldn't be thinking about me
I will always think of you
You briefly saw Wanda blush at those words so you returned to the actual conversation you were having with your mother. "Then where should I sign?"
Now after signing all the documents you were officially her daughter.
You were finally Y/N Romanoff
(Ah of course there was a big celebration afterwards, obviously all Tony's doing)
You've never felt happier in recent years than right now. You have it all, a family, friends and fantastic powers.
You know this won't last long but you'll make sure you enjoy it while this peace lasts.
3000 Follower Celebration
Tony found any and all reasons to throw a party. Fourth of July, New Years, Thanksgiving, even fucking Arbour day got a celebration that included luxury foods and so much alcohol that even thinking about it gave you a hangover.
But by far his Halloween bashes were the most mind blowing. He went all out, even going so far as to turn part of the tower into a truly frightening haunted house. The halls were filled with hyper-realistic decorations and people with extravagant costumes.
You found it fun, it was pretty much like a kid’s party on steroids. You gorged yourself on candy while getting drunk with your favourite people in the world while you all pretended to be someone or something else, in the case of Clint’s famous candy corn costume, for the evening.
This year, you had a group costume with Wanda and Natasha: sexy three Musketeers. With a truly scandalous amount of skin showing beneath a corset, stockings, killer red heels, a frilly collar, huge hat and a fake sword, you truly felt the role.
You and the girls strolled into the huge ballroom absolutely on top of the world. Immediately, Wanda was pulled away by Vision and onto the dance floor while Natasha made a b-line for the bar, leaving you with a red lipstick stain on your cheek and a wink.
But you weren’t phased, instead you happily strolled over to the small gathering of some of the older Avengers, gunning for the flask Thor always carried at parties. “Good morrow sirs, perchance you have a nip of ale for me.” You laid the old English accent on thick as you planted yourself by Steve who was dressed as a zombie businessman. He rolled his eyes and handed you his spiked beer.
“Thank you, my good man.” Thor (who was a playboy bunny this year) beamed at you. You sipped the stronger than normal beer and nodded at the rest of the men in the group. “We have some mixed effort here- Bucky looks like he gave up but Sam, you look great!” Sam, in a very elaborate Dracula
costume, turned to Bucky, who wore Steve’s Captain America uniform.
“See! I told you that you looked stupid!” Bucky’s left eye twitched.
“No you told me that no one dresses up for Halloween anymore so I shouldn’t bother with a costume.” He grumbled, arms folding dangerously over his chest. You giggled and handed the beer back to your surrogate brother.
“Has anyone seen Pietro? He wanted to do the haunted house with me.” Steve shrugged.
“He wasn’t here when I got here but he may be trying to spar with Hulk, again.” You glanced over to where Tony (Patrick Bateman) and Bruce (Doctor Frankenstein) were drinking in a quiet corner with Peter (Han Solo), most likely chatting about their little science projects. But there was no silver-haired man with them.
“Hmm.” You hummed, resting a hand on the hilt of your fake blade. “I’ll go for a wander and see if I can find him. Oh and Bucky, the suit looks good on you.” Immediately, the super soldier perked up and a smirk crossed his face.
“Thank you.” He smugly responded while grinning at Sam who just rolled his eyes. Satisfied with the chaos you released about to unfold, you journeyed back into the crowd on the search for your boyfriend.
There were cheerleaders, werewolves, some cheap Avengers costumes, but there was no speedster. After you passed what seemed to be the 20th Black Widow, a flash of silver caught your attention.
Pietro was leaning against a column just outside the party, his bright blue eyes fixed firmly on your generous curves. He was fully decked out in scuffed jeans held up by a thick belt with a gun holster, a leather vest with a red plaid shirt, an expensive pair of cowboy boots and a large Stetson in his hands. As he caught your eye, he flipped the hat perfectly onto his head while smoothly placing a fake cigarette between his teeth with his other hand.
“Well howdy there little lady.” He drawled with an awful attempt at a southern accent.
“Hi there cowboy.” You purred, heels clacking on the expensive flooring as you approached. “I’ve never seen a cowboy without a lasso.” You gestured to his belt where an empty clip hung on his thigh. Pietro smirked deviously.
He grabbed you by the hips as you got close enough, tugging you into his chest. “I think you’ll find zat my lasso is somewhere more convenient.” His hands slipped down to your ass, grabbing the soft flesh beneath the tiny skirt you wore. He rolled his hips into your plush stomach, letting you feel his growing bulge.
“And where is that?” You played along, wrapping your arms around his neck, burying your fingers in his silver hair.
Pietro lowered his face to your ear, gently biting the lobe before whispering, “You vill have to play along to find out.” He then pulled away from your body. “Come, ve have much to do tonight.”
He took your hand in his own and pulled you into the hall. “It is time for a ride.” He winked, tipping his hat to you. You broke out in a wide smile.
God you loved Halloween.
'There is no good influence; all influence is immoral, immoral from the scientific point of view. To influence a person is to transmit our own soul to him…'
The scandalous laughter of Wanda and Y/N interrupted Natasha's reading for the eighth time, so the redhead couldn't do anything other than close her book and walk towards the irritating sound.
Her path ended in the kitchen, where ehe found both women playing with the flour, laughing outrageously.
"May I ask, what the hell is going on here?"
The thick and strong voice of the Russian made both Wanda and Y/N put aside their flour battle and their laughter stopped ringing, both of them turning to see the older girl's green eyes
"Oh, hi Nat," Wanda commented.
"What the hell are they doing?" asked again
"Cookies" it was Y/N's turn to answer "Do you want some?"
Natasha absolutely loved Wanda and Y/N's desserts, but she was too stubborn to admit it, so she just gave a little nod and crossed her arms, walking over to the kitchen.
"what flavor are the cookies?"
“Y/N I suggest making them walnut and cranberry”
Ok, so Natasha absolutely LOVED Y/N's special cookies, they were the most delicious she's ever had.
"And then we plan to have a movie night" Y/N spoke while putting a tray of cookies in the oven "Do you want to join?"
Natasha had to feign indifference by shrugging her shoulders and making a face.
"Yes, of course" both girls squealed with excitement "Anything but disney"
I hear how Wanda complained, causing a sweet giggle from Y/N, in turn, causing a small grimace, similar to a smile to Natasha.
———————————————————————————
Apparently, Natasha's demands were listened to, but, she didn't get away from watching some animated movies that Y/N had begged to see.
Truth is, it wouldn't take long for Natasha to fall for Y/N's beautiful eyes.
Out of the corner of her eye, Natasha managed to see how Wanda's head was resting on Y/N's lap, causing her to start playing with the younger redhead's mane, causing Natasha's blood to begin to boil.
And just when he was about to drop a sarcasm-filled comment, Sam's voice beat him to it.
"If at any point, either of you tell me you're in a relationship, I wouldn't be surprised at all."
Natasha thought that nothing could get more angry did with that stupid comment, until she heard the response from both girls. Or, NOT listen to the response of both girls.
I only hear small giggles from both of them, not even daring to deny the assumptions of Sam's idiot.
Natasha snorted tiredly and only dared to get up to storm off to her room.
"What's her problem?" asked y/n
Both Sam and Wanda only managed to raise their shoulders, as a sign of uncertainty.
———————————————————————————
Y/N was totally bored, just flipping channels in boredom.
They had all gone on an emergency mission. Everyone except Natasha.
But she had been locked in her room, leaving Y/N all alone and bored.
After going through channel 5 for the third time and not finding anything to watch, Y/N decided to turn off the TV and walk over to Natasha's door, just to do a little tapping.
I don't hear an answer, but seconds later, the door was opened, finding Natasha in black sweatpants and a simple red sweatshirt. With her hair a little tousled and her eyes with a little glimmer of boredom.
"What's the matter?"
Natasha asked tiredly.
“Well, I'm bored, so…I thought maybe you'd like to watch a trashy show with me so we can have fun together” Y/N asked as she played with her fingers, quite nervous.
"Why do that?"
"Maybe because… are you my friend?"
Natasha let out a deep laugh from her throat.
"Friend? I thought your only friend was Wanda"
"What? Of course not… you are also a great friend"
"Then why do you ignore me every time you're with Wanda?"
"What? Of course not…"
“Come on, Y/N, don't lie. I know you prefer her, she is your favorite"
"Of course not… you are also important to me"
"Don't lie to a liar"
"Nat, you're not a liar."
"Is that why you prefer Wanda to me?…" The ex-spy's eyes began to fill with tears. "Why didn't Wanda have to lie to save her skin…?"
The Russian's cries were interrupted because her Y/N's lips had collided with hers in a small and simple kiss.
Moments after the shock both women pulled apart, Natasha wide-eyed.
“Do you love me… like that?”
Y/N just managed to laugh lightly and caress Natasha's neck with her right hand.
“Natasha, you don't have to be like Wanda to deserve love. Every human being deserves some affection, especially if it is someone as noble, brave, intelligent and beautiful as you."
Now it was Natasha's turn to kiss her partner's cheeks and lips, showing that the love was reciprocated.
"Well… is the plan to watch trashy series still on?"
But although Natasha was never very good at showing her love with words, the facts were more important than these. What other show of love than watching trashy movies with the girl she loved?
———————————————————————————
The minutes passed, and with them the day; so, little surprise, Y/N looked away from the screen to see a redhead fast asleep with her head in her lap, and just as Y/N was about to start trying to wake her up for bed, she heard how the boys had arrived from their mission
"I'm very tired!"
"Shhh!" Silence Y/N Sam's screams
“Is Nat? …asleep on the floor?” Tony asked
Y/N nodded
“Cuddled up in your leg?” plugin steve
Y/N nodded again
"Did it finally happen?" Wanda asked with a smile, Y/N felt how the blush began to rise until it reached her face. She nodded again. "Finally you two are together"
"Y/N and Natasha?" Sam asked. "But…what about you and Y/N?"
"Sam, just shut your mouth."
Chapter Three: Wanda Maximoff
“Again!” the man with the cigar barked.
You inhaled sharply through your nose under the mask, waiting for the girl in front of you to attack. You could see her pupils tracking your limbs as she caught her breath. Her blue eyes lingered slightly on your left side for a moment, so quick most wouldn’t have caught it.
But most didn’t mean you.
When the girl sprung forward, going for your left arm as you suspected, you were ready. You caught her blade deftly and sunk it back into her own shoulder. The girl let out a strangled scream as you felt the blade scrape a bone. You made no noise, nor any other indication that you couldn’t stand what was happening. The smell of blood still permeated your mask and you tried not to gag as the match was called in your favour. You dropped the girl and made your way back to the center of the training ring to await further instructions. The man with the cigar tapped some of the ashes out onto the floor before pulling out a tablet.
“Such a pity my dear. I had such high hopes for you.'' The man cooed in Russian before tapping a button on his tablet.
You watched as the girl lifted her unharmed arm, her bracers right up to her own temple as she shocked herself. You didn’t even flinch as she died, instead you tried to focus on the man. His blue suit glimmered slightly under the fluorescent lighting in the training room as he clicked his tongue at the dead girl before him, as if she was nothing more than a broken cup or spilled beverage. The man then turned to you. Bringing the cigar up to his lips he took a long drag before running his finger tips down the side of your face and along the jaw of your mask.
“You, however, are better than I could’ve dreamed.” He chuckled, his Russian words covered in smoke and escaping through his teeth as he laughed at a joke only he seemed to be in on.
His touch filled you with a sense of dread, but like with your creator you found yourself unable to even flinch away from him.
“Alright get this shit cleaned up. I want her to go again.” He barked, switching to English and gesturing at the body on the floor in front of you.
“But sir we really need to get the specimen bank in its tank. We’re already nearing its limits.” Nagel protested.
The man simply waved him away.
“And you are pushing yours. I will get what I paid for.” He growled.
You saw Nagel blanch and swallow, his eyes darting between you and the man before nodding.
“Of course sir. Specimen FX-23 is always surprising us with her performance. Who should go next?” He asked, typing away at his tablet while two men dragged the body away.
The man in the suit grinned as he took another drag.
“Doesn't matter to me.” He smirked, and with a wave of his hand another girl stepped forward.
Her blonde hair was braided away from her face and tucked up and you wondered briefly if the girls you were fighting did their own hair or if they were permitted to help each other.
“Alright girls. Show me who wants it more.” The man chuckled darkly as he stepped back towards the rest of the men.
“Winner walks out of the arena.” He said, raising his arm and letting it fall to signal the start of your fight.
The girl in front of you quickly flicked out a knife and lunged forward.
___________________________
With a start, you shoot upright on the floor.
Slapping a hand over your mouth, you desperately try to control your breathing like Bucky taught you.
“Don’t worry Doll, you’re safe. I’ve gotcha.”
Inhale for four counts.
Exhale for four counts.
As you pant, you look around the dark room in front of you. Your enhanced vision letting you see the outline of your bedroom despite there being no light source.
You were at the Avengers compound.
You were in America.
You were safe.
(‘Inhale… two… three… four…,’)
“F.R.I.D.A.Y, could you please tell me the time?” You rasped, scrubbing a hand down your face as you laid back against your pillows and focused on the dim outline of the bed a few feet from you.
(‘Exhale… two… three… four…’)
“It’s 3:26am, Miss Fox. Would you like me to order some sleeping aids from Doctor Cho? I could also alert someone on the team of your distress?” The AI offered.
You shook your head as you licked your lips.
“No, thank you. I think I am just awake for the day.” You answered with a deep sigh.
You stared up at your ceiling for another moment before deciding to hop into a cold shower to wash away the cold sweat and the lingering feeling of unease.
Tonight was your second night in the compound.
After your first day with Sam and Steve, you’d watched a movie together.
You had appreciated Sam’s commentary and Steve giving you quick historical breakdowns so that you had the full context for what you were watching and you’d headed straight to bed once the movie was over.
Yesterday the two had barely had time to have breakfast with you before their phones had gone off and they were called to action. You hadn’t minded though. The rest of the team was still out on assignment, Natasha and Wanda having returned very late last night.
You still hadn’t met The Vision yet and Stark hadn’t returned from the Penthouse yesterday. So you’d decided to curl up on the couch in the common area, enjoying what you assumed to be a rare afternoon of having the compound to yourself. You’d read some of the books on the shelves and put on several of the records next to the turntable. You’d even danced a little with yourself while F.R.I.D.A.Y explained how to order yourself something to eat from the cafeteria.
You’d been downright giddy to learn you could order food to the kitchen or to your own room using the compound’s communication network. No speaking required. You had eaten some fruits and crackers by yourself before retiring to your room to have your first bath.
You’d also been delighted to learn that there was a tv installed in the wall of your linen closet, meaning you could watch a movie in your bathtub. Shuri had been too busy for a long call, but she’d recommended some tv shows for you to watch in the bath as the two of you said goodbye last night. She’d also explained using liquid body soap to create bubbles in the bath and you’d almost flooded the bathroom in your excitement.
(You watched ‘Tangled’ while you soaked, and dug out a nice body scrub while you got sufficiently pruney.)
It was halfway through your bath that F.R.I.D.A.Y alerted you of the team's return.
“Pardon the interruption Miss Fox, but Agent Romanoff and Miss Maximoff have returned. Mr. Wilson, and Captain Rogers are meeting them on the air strip in five minutes if you’d like to join them.” The AI informed you politely.
You’d glanced over at the clock and saw it was almost midnight and wondered if you could get away with hiding just a little bit longer.
“No thank you Miss Friday. I think I’m going to go to sleep instead.” A few hours later and here you were, back to staring at yourself in your bathroom.
You watched as a small drop of water trailed down your forehead, sliding down your neck and disappearing into the towel you had wrapped around yourself. You had to assume your ability to function on minimal sleep was due to the serum. That was the only explanation for how wired you felt. Glancing over at the time you noted it’d been about half an hour since you first woke up. Steve would be getting up to go for a run soon, so you decided you’d try to meet him in the kitchen to join him and Sam.
“Miss Friday?”
“Yes Miss Fox?”
“Is there a way I can play music from my device in here?” You asked.
Your bathroom’s sound system had been probably the most appealing part of the room so far (it seemed Tony Stark refused to ever be without music, even in rooms he’d probably never use) and you wanted a soundtrack for while you got ready for your day.
“Of course Miss Fox. You can use the plug on the wall next to the door, or I can show you how to wirelessly connect if your device has bluetooth?” The AI offered.
“The plug in is fine, thank you.” You’d smiled.
You plugged in your music device and switched on something classical and soothing while you toweled yourself off and changed into some running clothes. You hummed along as you brushed your teeth before shutting the music off and grabbing your journal and a pen and making your way to the kitchen.
You’d wanted to try and get everything down while it was still relatively fresh in your mind so you cracked open your journal and flipped to an empty page while a mug of tea steeped next to you on the counter.
You began with the outline of the training room. It had been different from the usual room you trained in, so you started with the floor plan. Once you’d sketched out the perimeter of the room you tried to fill it. Nagel’s form and accompanying lab rats were added in quickly before you switched your attention to the man in the blue suit and his lackeys. You sipped your tea as you sketched in the benches where the other girls were sitting. You tried to remember their faces but unfortunately it seemed to be impossible. You settled for trying to remember the unique hairstyles the girls all wore, doing your best to add texture to each lock or braid. As you started working on the details of the man in the suit, you heard a familiar walk coming from the elevator and shut your journal.
“Oh! Good morning Snow Fox! I didn’t think you’d be up this early,” a groggy Steve greeted you as he made his way over to the coffee maker. “Sleep okay?”
“Yes thank you,” you lied, sipping your tea and pretending to be interested in the elastic strap that held your journal closed. “I was wondering if you maybe wanted a running partner? I only ever run on the treadmill.”
“I’m sorry Snow Fox, normally I’d love that but I’m actually getting ready to ship out. Nat caught an amazing lead on an arms dealer running weapons in and out of Libya last night so she and I are taking Sam to investigate.” Steve explained, an apologetic smile on his face as he stood across the island from you.
“Wanda and Vision are home though! Wanda’s not much of a runner but I’m sure the two of you could come up with something. Tony said he’d be coming back sometime this week and I think he’s got some ID for you now.” Steve smiled and despite your disappointment, you found yourself smiling back at him.
Steve continued to chatter away at you as he prepared a to-go coffee for himself, Nat, and Sam. He kept the details vague but he told you what he could about the current mission he was about to leave for and let you accompany him down to the hangar where an equally tired Sam was waiting.
“No wonder you took so long.” Sam yawned after spotting you.
He took his travel mug with a grateful nod to Steve before wrapping an arm around your shoulders.
“Morning sunshine. Whatcha doin’ up so early?” he asked, taking a long sip.
You shrugged, his arm lifting with your shoulders.
“Just woke up and stayed up.” You answered quietly.
Sam hummed, and the two of you enjoyed a quiet moment together before Steve was calling him onto the jet.
“Ok listen, we’ve all got our phones on us and they’ll be in the jet while we’re on the mission but if you need us F.R.I.D.A.Y will know how to reach us in case of an emergency. Steve thinks this shouldn’t take more than a few days to sort out and we’ll be picking Bucky up on our way back. Have fun with Wanda and seriously, don’t hesitate if you need anything okay?” Sam asked, twisting to look you in the eyes as he rubbed your shoulder with the arm wrapped around you.
You smiled and nodded, appreciative of how caring Sam could be. You wrapped your arms around him and squeeze him gently before stepping back and waving goodbye to Steve and Nat who were waiting on the ramp of the Quinjet.
“Have fun, be safe!” You called out to them with a smile.
As the boys disappeared up the ramp, you caught Natasha’s eye in the cockpit and offered her a nod and small salute. Nat nodded before turning and making her way back to the pilot's seat. Steve smiled and waved back as the ramp closed and with a whoosh they were gone.
___________________________________
Having never met Wanda Maximoff, you had no idea what time she would wake up. Once you’d made your way back up to the kitchen to make another mug of tea, you noticed it was barely 5:30am.
Much too early for someone who’d just spent all day yesterday traveling back to America. Accepting that today would be another lonely day, or at the very least a lonely morning, you ordered some fruit from the cafeteria and raided the kitchen for some yogurt and granola while you waited for the fruit to arrive.
Stark had these contraptions all through the compound to send things from one place to another. A “dumb waiter” Steve had called it. There was one in the kitchen so that food could be sent directly to the counter next to the fridge and while you boiled another kettle the little door chimed and you slid it up to reveal a carton of strawberries and a carton of black berries. Humming to yourself, you prepared a little parfait and took out your Stark phone to send a photo to Shuri of your little breakfast.
‘Missing you. Make sure you eat something!’ You wrote, smiling at the thumbs up emoji Shuri sent back.
You knew she could get too wrapped up in a project and forget to eat, so you’d decided that you’d message her when you were eating hoping that you could remind her.
Once you’d finished your breakfast you decided to go unpack your things. So far all your clothes were still in the bags you traveled with and you had a pretty nice closet now. You plugged your device into the bathroom sound system once again and nodded along to an upbeat playlist of swing music. You were so wrapped up in making sure all your belongings were nicely hung up or folded that you barely noticed time flying by.
As you hung up the last shirt, you walked out of the closet and noticed how bright your room had gotten. The plain grey walls alight with late morning sunshine. Having nothing else in your room to clean or organize yet, you decided to tackle a new book from the common space.
You grabbed your journal and made your way back to the kitchen where you came face to face with a very groggy Wanda Maximoff.
“Oh! You startled me. Good morning, you must be Snow Fow.” she greeted and you nodded, suddenly very unsure of yourself.
“I’m Wanda. Vision will probably get here soon now that I’m up.” she smiled tiredly as she shook a tea bag in a large green mug. “Would you like some tea?”
“Yes, thank you.” you answered shyly, pulling out a stool to sit at the island while Wanda grabbed you an equally large blue mug.
“So how old are you?” She’d asked as you sat down at the counter, watching her prepare what smelled like green tea for you.
“Biologically, 22.” you’d recited, nodding when she gestured to the honey.
“What do you mean biologically? Are you 22 or not?”
“I’m, um… I’m not technically a person I don’t think. I’m a clone.” you stammered. Wanda just raised an eyebrow as you continued, “So um, Shuri figures I’m biologically 22, but I wasn’t born so I don’t have a birthday. I was created just over three and a half years ago so I guess physically I’m 3? Age is confusing… at least when it comes to me.” you shrugged.
Wanda let out a laugh.
“You’re right that sounds like a technical nightmare. 22 it is. I’m 25 by the way. Y’know, I’m amazed we found someone almost as young as Vision to join the team. He’s almost 3 too!” She joked, sliding the mug towards you which you picked up with a grateful smile.
You took a sip and were pleasantly surprised to discover she’d made your tea exactly how you liked it.
“Listen, I’m just going to be honest, I'm not really good at small talk. So I vote to pretend we already know each other and just speak freely.” Wanda smiled softly as she leaned against the counter opposite you. Her hands wrapped around the green mug as she took a dainty sip. Your shoulders sagged with relief.
“Thank you. I’m not very good at it either. It would be nice to have another friend that’s a girl here at the compound.” you smiled genuinely. Wanda grinned back.
“Wonderful. Well to be frank I’m exhausted. I’m normally up around now but sleeping on the jet really didn’t do anything for me. I don’t want to sleep again cause I want to readjust to this time zone, so I think I’m going to go meditate for a while if you’d like to join me?” she offered and you nodded.
“I don’t know if I’ll be any good at it, but I can try. I have never done it before.” you explained as you grabbed your journal and mug, following Wanda’s confident steps out of the kitchen towards the elevator.
“Don’t worry about it, I can teach you. Everyone meditates differently, but the important part is to calm your mind. However you choose to do that is up to you.” she explained, leading you to the elevator she pushed the button for the first floor and led you to the open training space.
“It’s just us and Vision home right now so we can use the training room, but when the weather gets nice I like to go meditate in the mornings on the roof. I think you’ll really like it,” Wanda beamed as the two of you grabbed some yoga mats and set them up next to the large bay window.
You followed Wanda’s lead and got comfortable sitting cross legged on the blue mat.
“Now there’s a few things people do when they meditate. You don’t have to but it helps to have a mantra or phrase to focus on while you meditate, especially if you’re a beginner. I use meditation to help me keep control of my powers. Sometimes large emotions cause outbursts or energy and I don’t want to hurt anyone…” Wanda trailed off, her eyes looked downwards and you could tell she was remembering something sad.
You shyly reached a hand out and placed it over the hand on her right knee.
“We are both here because we could hurt someone, but I think us being here is a testament to our desire to do good in the world, yes?” you asked.
You felt quite pleased when a small smile broke across Wanda’s lips.
“Yes, that is a very kind way to look at it. Where was I? Oh! Mantras! Since we’ll be meditating together I don’t think you’ll need one. It’ll probably be kinda confusing if we’re both chanting something. Since this is your first time ever, let's use today to focus on your breathing. Sit up straight and close your eyes.” Wanda instructed and you immediately removed your hand from hers and placed it back on your knees.
You straightened your spine and tried to mimic Wanda’s position.
“Take a deep breath, make sure to fill your diaphragm with air, not your rib cage. If it helps, try to make sure you don’t move your shoulders up and down.” Wanda explained.
You closed your eyes and inhaled through your nose, trying to follow Wanda’s instructions, you focused on feeling your stomach expand.
“Great! Now exhale slowly. If it helps you can inhale on counts of four, then exhale on a count of four.”
“What next?” you asked, cracking an eye to see Wanda had closed both of her eyes and begun the same breathing exercise.
“This is it. Focus on your breathing and allow the simplicity of the thought to soothe your mind.” Wanda answered softly, taking another deep breath at the end of her sentence.
You purse your lips, unsure of how breathing with your eyes closed like this could be the entire activity.
Not wanting to be rude to a new friend however, you straightened your back again and took another deep breath. You tried to keep your mind as blank as possible, letting your enhanced senses focus on everything else around you.
You slowed your breathing to match Wanda’s and listened to her relaxed heart beat. As she breathed, the slight shifts in her body wafted the smell of her floral shampoo past your nose. The tea you had both brought was cooling, no longer steaming mugs next to you both. The scent of the leaves changed slightly as the bags over-steeped and turned the fragrance slightly bitter. You could smell the plasticy matts in the gym, and the chemical cleaners that had been used last night. Your ears perked up as you heard the faint sounds of agents in the distance, too far away for you to clearly make out what was being shouted, but enough that you could tell they were running some kind of drill. Even fainter still you could make out the sound of running water behind the compound. Somewhere a bird was chirping.
“Feeling relaxed?” Wanda asked, a cheeky grin evident in her tone.
Slowly you blinked your eyes open and Wanda’s pleased face came into focus. You smiled, lazy and content.
“Yes, that was very pleasant. I don’t know if I could maintain that for long.” you answered.
“Snow Fox, check the clock. We’ve been here for almost an hour.” Wanda laughed.
You whipped your head around to see that she was right. You’d been breathing with your eyes closed for forty-five minutes. Letting out a small laugh of disbelief, you shook your head and grabbed your now-cold green tea and took a sip.
“You’re a very good teacher then.” Wanda just giggled.
“C’mon let's go find some lunch.”
__________________________________
After your first shared morning Wanda, true to her word, continued to act very casually around you.
You let her order you a salad she liked for lunch and she’d sat next to you at the island in the kitchen, bumping you with her elbow to emphasize a joke or in retaliation to any cheeky remarks you made. Once your plates were empty and the two of you decided to move to the media room. Wanda informed you that today would be a “girl’s day” because she wasn’t on active duty for another day since she just returned from a mission.
“Steve is really good about making sure we can all recover after a mission. He tries to make sure that if you have to leave the compound for an extended period of time, that your rest time after is comparable. Obviously there’s exceptions like Nat just went back out, but I’ve only been cleared for field duty in the last year. I think the others still like to treat me like the baby of the team.” Wanda smirked, instructing you to sit while she grabbed all the supplies to have “girl’s day”.
You and Shuri spent a lot of time together, but you weren’t sure exactly what kind of time together qualified as a “girl’s day”. Not that you wanted to admit it but you hoped it was as fun as movies had made it seem. You grabbed the remotes and did your best to get the tv set up. By the time you were able to find the Netflix menu you could hear Wanda coming down the hall.
“Okay! I didn’t know exactly what you’d need so I grabbed all of it. Let’s be pampered!” Wanda beamed.
You whipped your head around and let out a small laugh of disbelief.
Wanda was standing in the doorway of the movie room with a laundry basket loaded with all kinds of products. You quickly stood to help her carry the basket over to the coffee table and took in all the cosmetics in front of you. Wanda explained that she’d grabbed all of her nail polish, skin care, and several magazines for you to review. While she was explaining the difference between the regular polish and the uv gel, the ding of the dumb waiter chimed and Wanda dashed out of the room returning with a massive tray.
She’d seemingly ordered all the snacks in the world. Chips, cookies, cut fruits and vegetables, a charcuterie board (You’d had no idea sliced meats could be so fancy), and wine. Wanda had explained that after her birthday (her birthday was February 10th, a fact about your new friend that you happily tucked away) she and Vision had gone on a wine tour courtesy of Tony and wanted to show you all the different wines and ciders she’d bought herself.
“I know that the alcohol won’t affect you, but I thought maybe you’d like to try them. The ciders are apple, strawberry, and I think there might be one or two peach ones left.” Wanda explained as she handed you a brightly coloured can with a cartoon peach along the side.
You smiled and helped yourself to some more fruit while Wanda poured herself a glass of wine and picked something for you to watch. You cracked open the can of cider and found it was surprisingly tart (you assumed the alcohol made it that way) but not entirely unpleasant. You took another sip as Wanda browsed the tv guide for something the two of you would enjoy.
You discovered that she loved tv, specifically old sitcoms.
Your movie education had been quite extensive with Shuri, but you hadn’t had the patience for long, multi-episode story arcs. Wanda introduced you to “I Love Lucy” and the two of you applied mud masks and painted each other's toenails since you’d just painted your nails your favourite colour last night.
(She’d chosen a sparkly red, you’d gone for a midnight blue)
The alcohol did nothing for you as predicted, your metabolism breaking it down before you could get drunk, but sharing with Wanda had lifted your spirits.
After a couple glasses of wine, you discovered Wanda was a huge goofball.
Her Russian was surprisingly good considering it was technically her third language after Sokovian and English. The two of you had an easier time communicating than expected and it had been nice letting her explain some of the jokes on TV in your native tongue.
Wanda’s general aura of sweetness and empathy had set you at ease in the dark media room, letting you lower your guard just enough to have the living daylights scared out of you when Vision phased up through the floor to stand next to Wanda.
You shrieked and broke an empty wine bottle over his head.
“Vision!” Wanda admonished, picking a piece of glass out of her hair.
Your cheeks flushed in embarrassment as the android blinked at you.
“My apologies. I did not consider the shock I may cause. Most of the team is used to my phasing.” he explained.
“No, I'm sorry. They did warn me that you would probably do that. I’m sorry about your head.” You offered, grabbing a broom to clean up the glass.
“Vision doors,” Wanda whined.
You just smiled as you cleaned up, Vision grabbing a trash can for the glass before settling down on the couch next to Wanda.
“I will endeavor to use them more frequently.” he promised, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
“So, FX-23, how are you settling into the compound?” Vision asked. Wanda smacked his chest.
“Vision you can’t call her FX-23! That’s not a name!” She protested.
“My apologies. I’ve been reading over some of your files from Hydra to try and help the team determine the end goal of your project. What should I call you instead?” He asked politely and you tilted your head.
“I don’t mind if you call me FX-23, no one really does anymore. Shuri started calling me Snow Fox. That’s what everyone else has been calling me,” you offered. Wanda smacked her forehead.
“That’s not a name either!” she cried, somehow more offended.
“Well it’s the only one I’ve got. Hydra didn’t give me a name, I had a project ID and a specimen code.” you deadpanned.
“My name at first was ‘The Vision’. Thor called me that. Over time, the ‘The’ was dropped and I am now Vision.” he added.
“You could choose a new name. Snow Fox should be your Avenger-code name, not your name name. Why don’t you pick one?” Wanda asked and you bit your lip.
You’d been okay with everyone calling you Snow Fox, you didn’t have anything else to compare it to. It hadn’t occurred to you that you could choose a different name. A more “normal” name. Wanda just stared at you expectantly and you smiled at her enthusiasm.
“Can we pick one later? I really want to know what happens in the chocolate factory.” you ask, trying to side step the question as Wanda’s eyes went wide.
“Oh my god we need to restart the episode. This one is iconic!” she squealed, you and Vision laughing at her as she fumbled the remote.
You looked over at where Wanda had tucked herself into Vision’s side as the episode restarted and smiled softly. After only a few hours spent with Wanda, you had a good feeling about her. She was soft and sweet, but still firm in her beliefs and a force to be reckoned with if the clips of her in combat were anything to go by. You had a good feeling that she would be an amazing friend if you could let her in. So when Wanda turned to you after a joke you’d missed on the tv, a tipsy and cheeky grin plastered across her face, you let yourself grin back at her and settled in for a long girl’s night.
You’ve always been very reluctant to celebrate your birthday.
You haven’t had a birthday party since you were 12. The following year your mom died a couple of days before and neither you nor your family were in the mood to celebrate anything.
It wasn’t by any means unexpected, she had been sick for a few years, but it still hit you hard.
You were the youngest and were far too young when she first got sick to really understand everything going on.
You were 8 and all you really remember is watching your mom get more and more sick until eventually there was nothing more the doctors could do.
Her death hit you hard and you closed yourself off, never talking about it or even crying after the day of her funeral. To this day you’ve still never cried, in front of others or even by yourself.
You started exercising to channel all your energy, refusing to do anything more like the therapy your family suggested.
When you were 15 you discovered SHIELD and decided you wanted to help others, so you signed up for the SHIELD Academy, working your hardest and pushing yourself to your very limit.
You ended up being not only the youngest cadet ever, but the youngest to actually graduate and then the youngest recruit at SHIELD at only 16 years old.
Natasha was very impressed when she heard about you and took a liking to you, convincing Fury to make you part of her team during her missions and teaching you everything she knows.
That’s how you ended up in the Avengers Initiative, not that you felt you didn’t deserve it since you know how hard you worked and everything you gave up to work towards this achievement.
The team themselves were initially skeptical since you were barely 18 during the battle of New York, but they were quickly proven wrong when they saw how well you handled yourself against the Chitauri.
You were devastated when SHIELD fell, but carried on as an Avenger, battling Ultron and then moving to the Compound with the team.
You met the actual Bucky for the first time when you were 22, during the whole Civil War thing with Baron Zemo. Like Natasha, you were on Tony’s team, fighting mostly Pietro, but the conflict eventually ended.
It took Tony some time to get over the whole “Bucky killing his parents while brainwashed” thing, but, as he likes to say, he can’t call himself a genius without admitting that Bucky didn’t have much of a choice.
Thanks to Tony’s help Shuri was able to find a solution to Bucky’s brainwashing faster than she would’ve alone, meaning Bucky didn’t have to go back into cryo and was pretty quickly cleared to join the team, about a year after the airport battle in Leipzig.
You were warmly accepted by everybody and, the more the team grew the more you felt at home with these people.
And now you wish you could burn down the whole compound because, somehow, Tony convinced you to have a birthday party for the first time in 13 years because, in his words, 'you only turn 25 once'.
Good news is you managed to make him limit the guest list to the team and other people close to you like Maria Hill and Fury. Bad news is you’re still gonna be the center of attention, which you hate.
You couldn’t stop Tony from making everyone dress up for the party, and you couldn’t stop the team from getting you gifts even though you insisted all you wanted was everyone together and to have fun with them since for the longest time nobody ever even knew when your birthday was.
What you didn’t realize was that the only person more worried than you about your gifts was Bucky.
Since he joined the team the two of you have gotten close, starting with his first training with the team where he very loudly told Steve about his disbelief that someone as young and small as you could actually be an asset to the team.
You quickly put him in his place by taking him down after less than two minutes of sparring, taking full advantage of his underestimating you because he “didn’t want to hurt a pretty little thing like you.”
Admittedly he was impressed and wasn’t shy about letting you know that, while the rest of the team snickered at his initial shock when you pinned him down.
You became friends after that, not as close as you’d like but friends nonetheless.
If you were honest with yourself you’ve been harboring a little crush on the supersoldier, but he’s never shown any interest so you resigned yourself to just being his friend.
Something that you did come to treasure, though, is your and Bucky’s late night talks.
It started with you walking in on him in the kitchen on a late night where you couldn’t sleep, nothing new to you, but the two of you barely talked other than acknowledging each other.
You took a bottle of water and left.
A couple of days later you ran into him again and you stood there in silence while you made yourself a cup of tea and then left for your room.
A few days later again he was just sitting there and said nothing as you made your tea, except this time you put a cup in front of him and silently took a seat next to him at the counter.
Two nights later when you arrived at the kitchen he was already there with a cup of tea in front of him and one in front of the seat next to him.
You didn’t want to assume it was for you, but you took a chance when you noticed it was the cup you always used, a blue mug with Stitch on it that says “Let’s get weird”. Your favorite in fact.
You hesitantly sat down next to him and, without you having to ask or without even looking at you, he told you that the nights you stay up late because you can’t sleep you tend to be more quiet during the team dinners and while you hang out afterwards.
You didn’t say anything in return and just sat there, trying not to overthink how much he seemed to watch you.
But the more nights you spent like that, the more you two talked and you gathered quickly that Bucky is a very observant person, nothing more.
You loved the time you spent together after dark where you’d talk about everything and anything, but come morning it was almost as if it never happened, which you came to accept.
It weirdly made the nights you spent talking even more special, which was almost every night.
But back to the present, you’re currently getting ready with Natasha and Wanda, who know much more than you about hair and makeup and are always happy to help you out with getting ready for Stark parties.
You put on the black cocktail dress with rhinestones all over the corset and a slit down the left side, then the three of you make your way to the party room and you take a deep breath before entering.
Everyone is already there, all dressed up in fancy clothes as they all shout “Happy Birthday”.
You laugh and say hi to everybody while they all take turns hugging you, there’s not too many people but everyone important to you is there.
Even Laura and Clint’s kids are there, which you consider a second family at this point, since Laura always did treat you like a daughter.
You hate to admit that it's a nice party.
Knowing you, everyone makes an effort to not put you too much at the center of attention and you just go around talking to your friends like every other party.
Eventually time comes for the cake and, the moment you kind of dreaded, opening the gifts.
Since it's the first birthday you allowed the team to celebrate everyone decided to go all in for your gifts, which you picked up on from the very first gift you open.
Pietro got you a first edition of “The Picture Of Dorian Gray” which is your all time favorite book, Wanda and Maria got you a leather jacket and an amazing pair of boots that you knew were expensive because you were all out shopping together when you came across them.
Steve got you a gold heart-shaped locker with a picture of the team inside it, Natasha got you a charm bracelet with a little charm to represent everyone on the team, and Sam got you a cute necklace with your birth stone on it.
When you open Fury’s gift you start laughing since it's a gun, a SIG SAUER P226 to be precise, which is very Fury.
“It was my first gun when I joined SHIELD.” He says with a smile and you smile back, knowing how much thought he put into this gift.
You open Clint’s gift next, a bow and arrow that he already taught you how to use, and Laura got you a pair of diamond earrings.
Your heart melts when you open Lila, Cooper and Nathaniel’s gifts, respectively a friendship bracelet, an Avengers action figure of yourself and a Stitch plushie.
The three of them hug you tightly as you say thank you and now you only have two gifts left, Tony’s and Bucky’s, and they’re both little boxes.
You open Tony’s next, thinking it’s some fancy necklace or earring but you frown when you see a car key.
“Is this the key to your car?” you ask Tony, knowing full well you’re holding the key to an Audi R8 Spyder, the car Tony’s let you borrow so many times you’re now wondering if he’s gifting you his spare set of keys.
“No.” He says casually “It’s the key to your car.”
You’re even more confused and simply stare at him with your mouth gaped, not really processing the information.
“Y-you… You got me a car?!” You almost yell out of shock and everyone else starts laughing at your antics when you start basically jumping up and down and hugging Tony, squealing like a little girl.
“Well, come on, let’s go see it!” Tony says enthusiastically after you’ve calmed down, and you get up, just as enthusiastic, but are stopped by Steve’s voice.
“Wait, wait. You have one gift left.” He says, picking up the small box and giving it to you. “It’s from Bucky.”
You were so pumped up by the car, you almost forgot about it and completely miss the mischievous look Steve gives Bucky and the murderous glare Bucky gives back.
You also miss Bucky starting to protest before you open his gift, but he instantly shuts up when he sees your face falling the second you open it.
It’s a small necklace with a blue rose in it, it really looks like something you’d give a little girl more than a 25 year old woman.
You look at it for a minute, running your finger on it before you raise your head and look at Bucky.
The whole room goes silent as they all watch you worriedly, everyone noticing immediately that tears are streaming down your face.
Nobody understands what’s happening and nobody knows how to react or what to do, it’s like they’re all frozen by the sight of you being vulnerable for the first time ever.
Meanwhile Bucky’s heart is beating so loud he’s sure everyone around him can hear it, and he feels himself starting to panic at the thought of having ruined your birthday with that stupid gift.
Everybody else got you expensive gifts and all he did was get you a small, cheap necklace that reminded him of a story you briefly talked about once on one of your late night talks about a necklace you had as a kid.
He saw it at the mall while looking for a gift for you, remembering the sweet smile you had on your face when you mentioned it and the fleeting sad look he thought he saw when you told him you lost it when you were 12.
He was really proud of himself for that gift, but the more he saw the other gifts you got the more he regretted his choice, especially after Tony gave you a fucking car.
And now you were crying, not saying anything while just looking at him.
He doesn’t know what to expect from you at the moment, nobody does, he thinks you might yell, throw his gift back at him, tell him how much you hate it and him.
But you surprise everyone by throwing your arms around Bucky’s neck, hugging him tightly while crying into his shoulder.
You honestly forgot telling Bucky about that story and certainly didn’t expect him to remember it, especially since you always got the feeling that he didn’t care about your talks as much as you.
You just assumed that come morning he deleted everything you told him to make room for more important things, and you didn’t blame him.
But he didn’t.
What you didn’t tell him about the necklace is that your mom gave it to you because blue roses were her favorite, you had that necklace since you were born but you somehow lost it the day of her funeral.
That day you lost the two most important things in your life and cried yourself to sleep, and that was the last time you allowed yourself to be weak and cry.
Until today.
Bucky hesitantly wraps his arms around you, rubbing your back hoping to get you to calm down. He looks around at the rest of the team, panicking a little and not knowing what to do.
Everyone else is as clueless as he is, never having seen you in such a state before.
Bucky starts apologizing, his heart breaking at the sight of you crying, and he feels horrible that it’s because of him.
You shake your head quickly and pull away a little to look at him, wanting to reassure him you’re not sad or angry but incredibly happy, but words refuse to come. You take a deep breath to calm yourself and finally manage to speak.
“Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me.” It’s quiet, but it’s something, and it’s enough to make Bucky let out a breath of relief at knowing you don’t hate him or his gift.
He brings you back in for another tight hug, almost forgetting about everyone else in the room as you hug him back without hesitation.
You’re honestly not even embarrassed at crying, all you care about at the moment is Bucky, his arms around you while he lets you bury your face in his neck, like you’ve been wanting to do for years now.
“Happy birthday, doll.” He whispers in your ear and, for the first time in 13 years, you really feel like it is.
The little while Y/N was supposed to stay with her moms turned into a week, then two more, a month, and another one. However, Wanda and Natasha have not minded it at all, they’re over the moon to spend more time with their daughter.
They don’t live at their old apartment anymore, having decided it’d be too overwhelming for Y/N to go back there. Instead, they live in a house further away from the city and the noise. It has three bedrooms, one for guests, one for Wanda and Natasha, and one for Y/N.
It’s perfect for the three of them.
Of course, Natasha and Wanda aren’t pressuring Y/N into moving in with them permanently, which is why she is still paying rent on her crappy apartment, but their hope is high.
Y/N paces around in the living room, wearing her best clothes, which weren’t that good with her minimal income as she refused to let her mothers use too much money on her.
“She’ll be here soon.” Wanda sets her hand on Y/N’s shoulder, giving her a comforting smile. “You don’t need to worry.”
“I know, I just-“ she takes a breath, “I haven’t seen her since that day.”
Natasha steps inside the room. “She won’t blame you for that. She’ll understand why.”
Staying quiet, Y/N stares out of the window, waiting for a car to drive into their road. Her hands are shaking, so she keeps playing with the rings on her fingers. Wanda keeps staring at the rings with a small smile, happy to see her daughter wearing her old rings, but missing the times she used to play with her hands when nervous.
A black car with tinted windows drives to the front of the house. Y/N’s breath hitches, seemingly unable to move before Natasha gives her a small nudge. “Go on.”
Y/N walks to the porch and down the few stairs on it, her moms behind her. Maria is standing by her car. “Hey, bug.” She has a smile on her face, but she looks afraid. Y/N is pretty sure she has never seen Maria afraid.
“Hi, aunt Maria.”
With that, Maria, who brides her ability to keep her emotions in check, starts crying.
Y/N’s eyes widen. It takes her a moment to react, but when she does so, she walks straight to Maria and hugs her. Her arms wrap around Maria’s neck, while the woman’s arms go around Y/N’s waist tightly.
They stare for a moment, both crying, before Maria pulls slightly away to wipe away the tears. “I’m so sorry, I really am.” She sniffles, moving her hands on Y/N’s cheeks to lift her head up to face her. “I’m sorry I left you alone in there.”
Y/N shakes her head, her lower lip quivering at her honorary aunt’s words. “It wasn’t your fault.” Her voice is quiet, almost a whisper.
Maria smiles, appreciating the words though she doesn’t fully believe them. One of her hands moves to the side of Y/N’s head, petting her hair softly. “You’re so grown now. You’re not fourteen anymore.”
“I’m not fourteen anymore.”
“You don’t need your aunt to guide you anymore.” Her voice is soft, but it has bitterness in it. She’s angry at the world, and herself, for missing out on the rest of Y/N’s teenage years.
“I do.” Her words are quick. “I need you, just like I still need my moms.” The last words come out quieter than the rest, just so Wanda and Natasha can’t hear her. It was always easier to reveal certain things to Maria rather than her moms.
Maria glances at the two other women patiently waiting for them by the porch. She gives them a smile. “Let’s go inside, yeah? we have all the tome in the world now.” Her hand rests on Y/N’s shoulders as she starts leading her towards the house.
Maria stayed in the Maximoff-Romanoff household until four in the morning. They spent all the hours catching up, though Y/N wasn’t too keen on talking about her life alone too much, but she shared the important details.
The clock strikes 12:30 when Y/N finally manages to wake up, still tired from staying up so late. It takes her 20 minutes to actually get out of bed.
She stands up, stretching her whole body and yawning, which causes her to get a short dizzy spell. With tired movements, she walks into the empty kitchen.
Y/N frowns, usually her moms are already up and making breakfast at this time. Her heart gets a heavy feeling, but she pushes it away, making her way to the main bedroom. She knocks on the door. When there’s no answer, she knocks again, harder this time.
“Mom? Mama?” She’s not afraid to call Wanda mama anymore.
Once again, no answer.
Her breathing picks up. This isn’t the blip, this isn’t the blip. She says the sentence over and over in her mind, but it’s getting swallowed by her panic. She opens the door and steps inside the empty bedroom, her dread growing by the second.
“Mom!” Y/N starts walking in and out of all the room, checking every possible nook and cranny. “Mama!” She quickly makes her way to the living room. Her shaky hands grab the remote control and turn on the television. The channels change quickly as she searches for the news channel.
Before she can fully try to listen to the news anchor, the front door opens. Her moms walking in, both of them holding grocery bags.
“Where were you?” Y/N shaky words make the two women set the bags down, frowns on their faces as they see the disheveled state their daughter is in. “I- I thought you were gone again. Why would you leave like that? You can’t just-“ the words are coming out quickly.
“Hey, hey,” Wanda sits on the couch, pulling Y/N right next to her, “we’re here and we’re okay.”
Natasha walks into the kitchen, picking up a note they wrote from the floor. It was taped to the fridge so Y/N would see the written We’re grocery shopping, will be back soon! easily. “I’m sorry, kрошка.” She sets the paper on the counter before joining the two on the couch. “The note fell.”
Y/N sniffles, trying to keep her sobs at bay while she fully leans into her mothers’ embrace. “I thought you left me again.”
“No, no.” Natasha and Wanda sandwich Y/N in their embrace. “We will never ever leave you again, and I know-“ Natasha continues talking before Y/N can say anything, “I know it’s hard to keep that promise, and it’ll take you time to fully trust us again. That’s okay. You just have to know, that we’ll do everything in our power to keep you and us safe.”
Y/N sniffles, her head in the crook of Wanda’s neck and her hand holding onto Natasha’s hand tightly. “Okay,” her voice is quiet as a whisper, “you won’t leave without telling again?”
“No, baby.” Wanda kisses the top of her head, keeping her face there, taking comfort in her scent even though it’s not as familiar. “We won’t leave without making sure you know exactly where we are.”
Y/N nods. She pulls away and rubs her eyes, clearing them from the tears. “What’d you get from the store?” She changes the subject, feeling slightly embarrassed of her panicked state.
Her moms make no comment of it, they go right into telling Y/N about their plan of the day to cook and bake together.
You can’t change what cannot be undone. She wants you to embrace this, yet you fight it,  tooth and claw.
There came this new and sole desire that occurred during the excruciating ordeal of your shift on the full moon last night.
Only such an experience meant Mother Nature was granting you a new wisdom, that which altered your previous nature, no matter how complicated the human biology was.
By her law, instinct was instinct.
You splashed cold water onto your face and absorbed the sight of yourself in the mirror. Often you caught sight of the beast beneath your eyes in the reflective surface. And many times it scared you how close it always lingered. Ever watchful and biding its time.
How could Wanda see you as more than you realise?
You caught the shine of amber as it shimmered across your eyes in your reflection. Right below the surface of your own skin, a predator resided with unbridled force. You shook your head to rid the intrusive need to let it out.
‘It is done now. She’s preparing me for something.’
Your hands gripped the sides of your sink, your white, strained knuckles ached with the pressure that threatened to crack the ceramic basin.
‘They wouldn’t understand it. Wanda wouldn’t understand it.’
A knock on your room’s door caught you off guard. That rarely happened with your keen senses. Your hands released their hold on the sink.
“Y/N?” Your ears pricked at the accented tongue of her voice, “you finished packing?”
You don’t even think about your actions because it felt natural to approach her. To be close to her. You’ve already opened your door when you came to your senses
when a pair of bright eyes blink up at you. Fuck, you can’t control your racing heart whenever she smiled.
You’re almost afraid she’ll read your mind again and discover what she’d be better off never knowing.
She saw you as more than you realised but could she possibly understand the idea that you saw her anymore differently than you did before?
‘Mate.’
“I came to let you know everyone is waiting for us. Can’t leave our guide behind now.”
Her eyes momentarily fluttered down before they lifted to stare into the captivity of yours.
“Y-yeah,” you bit back a snarl at the stutter of your response, “I’m ready.”
“Good. Could you help me with my bags?” Her eyes looked hopeful for the short moment you left her unanswered before you nodded, perhaps a little too enthusiastically.
“Of course!”
And that’s why you now fought so hard against Mother Nature. She instilled within your agonised cries, broken bones and reformed muscle what every werewolf anticipated: a soulmate tie.
When many were overcome with a pure and primal feeling of joy, you were consumed by trepidation.
Nevertheless, you walked Wanda to her room and retrieved her bags - much to her protest, you gave a wolfish smirk to hide the near breathlessness in your lungs and rapid beating of your heart - and joined the others on the Quinjet for your mission in Alaska.
Where a wolf calls home.
“So tell us, Wolfie. What’s the whole story with you and Alaska?” Natasha spoke up from the co-pilot's seat, Steve sat next to her, his focus on flying the jet though her question piqued his interest. “Did you grow up there?”
A few hours into the flight and all was smooth sailing until her question made the hair on the back of your neck stand.
When you mentally prepared yourself, you turned your eyes in her direction.
She’d turned to peer over her shoulder at you with a quirk in her brow, curious to Fury’s designation as the team’s guide.
“Ah,” you huffed and scratched at your neck haphazardly, another habit you shared with disdain, “something Fury left out of my file, I take it?”
“Well, yeah. Your file has barely anything regarding background. Only when you moved to the city and your skill set mainly.” Your lips pulled into a thin line with Sam’s deliverance of this news.
Your nose wrinkled at the scent that tinged the air like ash and smoke. A dark tone to their concern. Were they worried you were hiding something?
You simply shrugged to ease some of the tension that built around you and your teammates. “Just spent some years there before I moved on to live in the city. As a werewolf, you tend to learn terrain quickly, no matter how long it’s been.”
Natasha nodded but something in the way she pursed her lips made the tight coil in your chest grow, almost to the point it strangled out a whimper from you.
“Alaska is a really beautiful place,” you sighed and your lips stretch to form a smile, “if we have enough time, I’ll happily show you guys around.
“I’d like that very much,” Wanda said from her seat across from yours. Your smile turned shy under her gaze, a flutter of her glowing red magic used to merely entertain herself made your heart warm.
An odd sensation as if her very magic was tied to your heart.
Steve hummed out from his place, his eyes wandered to Tony as if to hear out his thoughts on the matter. Tony shrugged.
“Just don’t forget we’re here for a mission, not a ‘walk-with-nature’ getaway trip.”
The small assembled team nodded and mumbled amongst themselves.
“Alright, Stark. But I am personally not leaving Alaska without playing a proper game of fetch with Y/N.”
Your chin tilted down to conceal the smirk on your lips. Wanda was surely determined with a tone like that. You briefly caught her eyes and the wide grin plastered on her face.
If Mother Nature gave you one chance to change yours and Wanda’s - unbeknownst to her - new fate, would you truly want to?
The Quinjet landed without trouble thanks to Steve’s impeccable piloting skills, though you could tell Sam and Tony may have had a few hundred pointers for the captain.
The engine was turned off and everyone gathered their bags together. You reached into your suit pocket for the small pill case, taking two of them. When Sam gave you a questioning look, you mumbled something about it being medicine for your headache.
The ramp lowered and the frozen breeze brought most of your teammates to a shiver. You and the super soldiers hadn’t so much as flinched.
You were the first to step down the ramp and greet the snow with your feet, the deep crunch beneath you a welcomed whirlwind of contentment.
‘Home.’
The others followed behind you, bags adorned, they took in the marvel of their new surroundings. Below a blue and sunny sky littered with clouds, the platform was mostly covered by the ensuing white that covered the landscape.
Down the trail that led alongside the woods, a large house laid vacant in the distance right near the edge of the frozen lake.
“Quite the walk,” Tony huffed with a cluster of windy ice before his mouth. Snow already littered in his dark hair.
Your gaze followed the span of the ice until it reached the far off cluster of trees on the other side. Beyond that, the mountain peaks contrasted against the sky.
“See that mountain up there?” You pointed at the tallest one and your team all turned their sights to where your hand directed.
“I’ve been up there. A sort of tradition to race up to the top just as the sun grazed the horizon.”
The memories were distant when you moved to the city. But now they flooded back like an avalanche.
“All the way up there, huh?” Steve asked, mouth agape as he assessed the frosty white peak. “By yourself?”
“No, with my siblings.” You answered that too quickly and too honestly. The frosted mist faded before your lips into the air with your words, unable to take them back.
“Wait, you never mentioned you have siblings,” said Bucky with a furrowed brow.
“Oh, I guess I never did…” Your once smile faded from your face and your eyes were overcome with that pain that stained the snow you walked upon. You felt the stares against your back and you huffed aloud, shoulders sagged.
“Come on, we should get settled in,” you said with a forced smile, the cold for once stung harshly against your face. It burnt your skin.
The others nodded and you led the way down the trail. The sun would set soon, and it was unwise to wander around after sun down. But that sole purpose that fuelled your soul burned deep within you like a campfire amidst a snow storm.
You wouldn’t allow any harm to befall your team. You’d sooner die than let anything happen to them. To her.
As you walked with a determined stride towards the lodge, Wanda’s warm fingers swept across your knuckles.
‘I’m here for you, if you want to talk.’
You swallowed thickly and the inkling of your head nodding seemed to answer her as her eyes scanned you.
“So how did Fury get this safe house?” Clint asked with a deep, and huffy breath, his hand adjusted the bag on his shoulder.
“It belonged to a family many years ago. But it’s been vacant for some time and Fury gained ownership of it.”
“You seem very familiar with the safe house.”
Shit. Was she reading your mind as you spoke?
You walked up the steps onto the front porch, key in hand but your hand lingered on the door handle with an iron grip.
You stood locked in place for what felt like an eternity, eyes scornful as they glared daggers into the wooden and glass panelled door.
“I’d worked alongside the family. Did some odd jobs here and there, kind of became a family friend.”
you unlocked the front door and promptly  stood aside with a gesture to the others before you, the door held open. You offered them all a kind smile the moment your eyes found Wanda’s, the sharp lines in your brows eased even when in hers, you saw the glimmer of concern.
“Come on in.”
It was safe to say the majority of your party were relieved to step inside the lodge and turn on the thermostat. Not that it was ever much in use back in the day, you were a little surprised that it still managed after all this time.
While the others took in their temporary residence, you couldn’t help but let your eyes rake over the emptiness that took place. A shadow of its former self.
Your hands ran over the hearth’s sill, clean of any dust but once, it held the memories of a past you left behind. Each frame a moment in time which you treasured beyond belief with the passed family.
Now you stared at the unlit hearth. Barren of those memories. You thought it was for the best. Fury did well with the clean up.
‘Are you okay?’
You looked towards where Wanda stood by the L shaped lounge, arms folded over her front and fingers knitted together; her nails dragged across her knuckles and it made you cringe from the thought of her discomfort.
‘Yeah, I’m alright.’
“So how are we doing the rooms?” Natasha asked after she finished her investigation of the kitchen right across from the lounge room.
“We will do pairs,” you answered curtly, yet you still feigned a smile even if they could tell it was fake.
“Follow me.”
You only hoped they wouldn’t say anything that delved deeper than the surface. Only the wolf awaited them there.
You hadn’t expected the return to Alaska to hit you in such a way. And to add atop of it all, your senses were at an all time high, dialled up to eleven. You felt far more sensitive than usual.
More easy to falter. Easier to piss off.
Everyone followed you up the flight of stairs to the second floor.
The hallway was less narrower than you remembered, it could fit two people shoulder to shoulder fairly well. Rooms lined the hallway down towards the singular pair of double doors at the end.
“These are the rooms, take your pick. This is the bathroom here, the master bedroom has an ensuite,” you explained to them, your tone rapid fire.
“Wanda and Natasha, you can take the master bedroom.” You opened the double doors and it took everything in you to prevent the tears. And yet a sad smile pulled at the corners on your lips.
You could still smell them after all this time. It was like they never left.
“Are you sure?” Natasha asked rather sharply, almost offended you offered it up so casually, given your relationship with the family.
“I don’t mind bunking with Clint is all, if that’s your concern. You and Wanda can take the master.”
Natasha’s tone was one you knew well enough for your months with the Avengers. Firm. Bossy. She wasn’t asking, she was telling. Your breath goes still in your lungs and your face became heated, a red hue bloomed in your cheeks and the tip of your nose.
You and Wanda together in a room? By yourselves?
“I— er, I don’t—“ you’re a fucking stuttering mess again and you clear your throat, the sound more of a growl than anything.
“I don’t mind bunking with you, Wolfie!” Wanda assured with a light and gentle smile, you could see easily she was holding back a flustered giggle given the faint colour in her cheeks.
Though you wished to chalk that up to the cold still settled in her bones beneath the layers.
“Then that’s settled!” Natasha flashed you both a wink and you whined lowly, involuntarily on your part but no less made Wanda giggle freely this time.
“I’m not sleeping in the same room as Tony,” Bucky grumbled, his eyes found Steve’s to indicate he’d chosen his roommate.
Tony huffed with a roll of his eyes. “Likewise, cyborg.”
“Okay, boys. Keep the peace. Everyone settle in and come downstairs for dinner in fifteen minutes. That’s an order!”
“I thought I was in charge!” Tony called after Natasha down the hallway, Sam patted his shoulder. “Yeah, only on report. We know who’s really directing this mission.”
Steve and Bucky took the room that belonged to the second eldest sibling, further down the hall, Natasha and Clint claimed the room next to theirs; the twin’s old room and Sam and Tony chose the room opposite Bucky and Steve’s, the third eldest’s room.
When you looked down that hallway, you could see the kids in that hallway again, their feet pattering against the wooden planks in their rush of excitement.
The last bedroom, however, was off limits. Under lock and key. It didn’t take a genius to put two and two together. Fury put everything in there and put a lock on it.
It was for the best.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Wanda asked after everyone had gone to their chosen rooms to unpack and settle in.
You closed the doors with a heavy sigh, forehead pressed into the cool, wooden surface.
“Yeah,” you managed to breathe out, “yeah, I’m just… not feeling too good. Feel different…”
Wanda took a few steps forward but was paused in place by the command in your voice. “Don’t…”
Your vocals were contorted into a deep, husky drawl as the wolf shined through enough to reflect in your eyes with an ominous glow. Your claws dug into the skin of your palms to the point they almost drew blood.
Her eyes drifted down to see your balled fists and her hands nervously fiddled together once more, you waited to see the red hue of her magic.
Was she trying to read your mind again?
“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t—“ you retracted yourself, getting a grip of the wolfish desire to let go. You had to keep it together.
Your heart rapped hard in your chest, your claws sank back and the amber glow faded from your eyes. “I’m sorry, Wanda.”
‘I’m sorry, Mate.’
“It’s fine, really, Y/N. Don’t worry about it. Just know I’m here for you if you want to talk. We all are.”
There was too much on your mind to simply talk. No. You needed action. Talking about it would only lead to tears and a breakdown.
“Hey,” Wanda closed the gap between you both and you fought between doing the same and taking a retreating step. You were locked in place a second time.
Her hand was delicate as she placed it on your arm to give an assuring squeeze.
“Don’t fight it. Whatever it is that’s troubling you. I want to help you.”
‘I want your help. I want you.’
You feel like you can only nod in reply. Your words all jumped in the back of your throat, a knot ready to burst the moment you try to utter a single one of those words.
She took the daring leap and wrapped her arms around your torso.
The instinct Mother Nature had sewn into your wisdom made your arms wrap around Wanda, and you tugged her in until she was flush against you.
Her scent filled your nose and your eyes softened with a rumble reverberating against her chest, the glisten of tears not long to follow as your eyes became coated. How you wished you had the courage to tell her this new desire. This need to protect her; claim her.
But she wouldn’t understand it. Those who did not share their very soul with the wolf couldn’t possibly grasp the identity of such serious and sacred matters that kept your species alive and the old ways honoured.
Not often were humans and werewolves bound together by Mother Nature’s soulmate tie. Often the wolf was spurned because their mate didn’t understand that their rejection held far greater consequences than hurt feelings.
Perhaps that was why you wanted to protect Wanda so much. Not because she was your destiny or to protect yourself from getting hurt.
You were no stranger to getting hurt.
It was to protect her from what you would become and the guilt she would harbour on herself.
“Thank you, Wanda. For being here,” you sighed after a long moment, time having felt dragged on for years as you held her in a tight hug. You didn’t want to let her go. Not now or ever.
“Of course, Wolfie. You’re my friend.”
You whined softly but the corner of your lips turned up into a faint smile, conflicted between pain and relief. “I like that…”
‘Mate…’
You and Wanda had been the last to join everyone downstairs for dinner. Natasha and Clint mostly tutted and bickered with each other as they slaved away with dinner, Wanda opted to help out when she had a taste test.
Tony and Bucky had helped themselves to one of the finely aged whiskey bottles in the cabinet near the dining table and Steve took interest in the small collection of books arranged by volume, while Sam took in the terrain from the wide, floor to ceiling windows that looked out into the growing dark woods.
Everyone was growing accustomed to their surroundings in the house. This was good, it meant they felt comfortable. That’s what you wanted, had hoped for. You couldn’t exactly say the same for you, but there was that feeling of home.
You joined Sam by the window, a cold bottle of beer curled into the palm of your hand. It didn’t taste the best, you’d never liked the brand, but it was what was on hand.
Alcohol had a weird effect on werewolves anyway so you opted to stay away from it as much as possible.
You took a swig with a grunt from your unsettled gut and Sam smirked at you. “You doing alright, Wolfie?” He asked and you rolled your eyes.
“Just fine. Beer’s shit though, I don’t know how you guys like it.”
The sneer on your face as you glared down at the bottle only made Sam chuckle. “Honestly, it does taste bad, but I don’t fancy myself the connoisseur.” Sam, subtly as he might, gestured towards Tony and Bucky. “Unlike them.”
You huffed at that, a small grin on your lips. Sam was a good man to talk to whenever you felt like the world around you was caving in with a purpose to destroy you.
Even more, when he’d talk about his family, you got immersed in his stories; as though you were there too.
“I wouldn’t trust Tony to drink a shot of dyed bleach and tell the difference.”
Sam’s fist was brought to his face, a mouthful of his drink chuffed back when he snorted so he wouldn’t choke.
You grin impossibly more and clapped his shoulder. “Hey, I’m not the best at jokes, how did you even find that funny?”
“Something funny, pup?” Tony asked over the rim of his glass. Your eyes met his and you shook your head. “Just told a dull joke,” you replied, “like your taste buds…”
Only Sam heard your muttering and once he was free of his mouthful of beer, he laughed loudly. The sound faded after a moment and you both stared out into the woodland.
“It’s really peaceful out here,” Sam said finally. You nodded but you feared something in you couldn’t entirely agree with him.
It had been peaceful once. But now there lingered something eerie. It made you too alert to easily relax as the others did. Even if they too could sense the same thing as you, their scent gave nothing away. “I thought the same as you once.”
Sam looked at you with a troubled, confused furrow in his brow. His lips pulled down into a frown. Sam opened his mouth, no doubt to ask the question you already saw in his eyes, but Natasha’s announcement cut him off.
“Dinner’s ready!”
Clint and Wanda served up everyone’s plates with the spaghetti bolognaise. The food was good on account of Wanda adding just a little bit more spice and salt to the sauce, and of course what was dinner without conversation.
Talk about smaller topics were easier to digest with your food. How you didn’t expect it to take a turn that made your hand halt before you could take another bite of your food.
“Is there anything dangerous out here, Y/N?”
“It’s Alaska and we’re in the middle of unsettled territory. Of course there are dangers out here,” you answered Sam with a casual shrug.
Not many predators roamed so close to the house when you were here with the family. Just the odd bear once or twice. You glanced up to meet Sam’s unsure stare.
He didn’t believe you.
“Just as a safety precaution, when we’re not on a mission, stay within the border of the property,” you began, “I’ll show you guys around tomorrow. At night, I ask that you stay inside. If you do go outside, let me know so I can come with you.”
“We’re capable of holding our own against a drifter moose or yogi bear, pup,” Tony snarked lightly with another gulp of his whiskey.
“I know,” you bite with a tone a little too harshly, the beds of your fingernails felt bruised and ached as your eyes burnt. “But just… please, just do that for me, yeah?”
You looked around the table and you let out a relieved sigh when you saw heads nod. “Of course, Y/N,” Natasha assured.
“Good. Other than that, you have free roam of the house, minus the locked room upstairs. Just the family’s old belongings.”
The others nodded again and your eyes met Wanda’s. she could see something deeply troubled you. You were usually so calm and collected on missions, barely flinching when bullets fired at you in a frenzied spray. Sure, your aggression was a feat unmatched in the heat of battle but it was what made you strong.
Deadly.
Effective.
You were Mother Nature’s definition of safety and danger. An apex predator.
But now, something in you had visibly switched. Gone was the fearsome animal that could maul and maim without restraint but one. Your confident smirk and wicked disregard for your life - despite your actions to protect your teammates - had contorted into a concerning frown and a strained, husk of a drawl. An underlying threat to unleash the wolf if steps were not taken carefully.
Dinner resumed, albeit, a little less talking and a lot more tension. You finally excused yourself after you promptly thanked Natasha, Clint and Wanda for the food.
You knew everyone watched you leave but Wanda’s eyes pierced through you like nothing else ever could.
The wind swept across your back and through your hair with a hollow whisper in the night. The pier was a spot you went to to think when you felt troubled. The Northern Lights danced across the black canvas littered with stars and a bright, fading full moon.
The frozen lake offered a different ambience with the rest of nature. A deep, echoing boom across the frozen surface could be heard from the water beneath the layer of ice.
Boots intruded on the wooden boards of the pier as they gently - calmly - thundered towards you.
“Wolfie,” one accented tongue said so beautifully you thought for a moment an angel greeted you. Startled with a gasp, you spun your head to look in the direction of her voice.
“Wanda,” you greeted with a rumble.
‘Mate.’
“What are you doing out here?”
She rolled her shoulders back and stepped closer. Then another step. The post behind you greeted your back then.
“I came out here to find you. May I join you?”
You nodded, the action more of a nervous quiver than anything, Wanda smiled and stood by your side. Her shoulder brushed along your arm and you felt the air in your lungs dissipate.
“You left dinner so abruptly. I wanted to make sure you’re okay.”
“I’m alright.” You stared off into the distance to keep your eyes away from Wanda’s who you knew analysed you now. Her scent filled you and smothered out all the rest. You couldn’t smell the fresh wetness of the snow, the rich, earthly smell of the pines, nor the herd of the elk that traversed the wilderness across the vast lake.
You could only smell her. That intoxicating scent of rose and vanilla that her shampoo couldn’t conceal from you.
The vanilla was stronger. She was in a state of unease. Worry.
Your eyes slowly drifted from the mountains to her. Her gaze must have left you to also see where it was your sights wandered off to.
“You don’t believe me?” You asked and she sighed, unable to meet your eyes. “Not really. I know something is wrong, you’re encumbered by this fear and it’s driving me crazy that I can’t— that I can’t…”
Your brows were pulled into a hard formation and your mouth fell agape. The struggle within her to voice her thoughts made your heart wrench and break. “Hey…”
That instinct took over again, your arm  wrapped around her waist and you didn’t hesitate to pull her to you.
It felt nice for Wanda to be held like this. The cold slithered beneath the layers used to keep it out, only to find the heat of your body to immediately nullify the chill.
“It’s hard to explain, Wanda. I’m in a very difficult position right now and I fear what might happen to those around me.”
“I told you that I’m here to talk, Y/N. I won’t judge, I promise. Please just… tell me.”
Her head rested under your chin, her hands rested against your chest. It all felt so intimate. You wanted to cave and tell her everything on your mind. She was your mate and she had a right to know.
But would she understand?
“Wanda, you’re…,” you trailed off as something thick coated the back of your throat, “you’re…”
‘My mate. Just say it, tell her she is your mate!’
Your chest expanded with a deep breath, Wanda’s head lifting with it. Her cheek nuzzled against you. This was your chance. It was now or never.
“Wanda, you’re my m—“
An announcing howl reverberated in the far distance like wind moved through a hollow.
Your blood turned ice cold. The searing burn in your eyes returned with that striking, animalistic glow of amber.
“What is it?” Wanda had asked but you didn’t answer. You glared off in the direction where the howl came from. That sounded haunted you; hunted you.
“Get inside and don’t come out. No matter what,” you commanded beneath a baritone growl. Wanda looked at you, jaw dropped and eyes wide. You could smell it on her. Vanilla.
Confusion. Fear.
“But—“
“Now.”
You left no room for argument. Not when it came to her safety. Not when the wolf shone through the amber that danced ferociously in your eyes. There she could see a semblance of that old you.
Protective. Dangerous.
She made her way back towards the house but she stopped at the end of the pier and turned to look at you once more. Her bright, glossy eyes pleaded with you to follow her. You watched her and nodded for her to go on, that you wouldn’t be too far behind.
‘Promise you’re right behind me.’
‘I promise. Now go.’
She rushed off towards the front porch and entered the house as the wind was bitter against your back again; harsher than before.
You wanted nothing more than to end this. Your arm rested against the post, claws digging deep into your palm. You’d make it painful but to strike now would only invite conflict so early into your mission.
It would complicate things all because you couldn’t keep yourself in check.
A confirmation that even with your positives there came your negatives; unpredictable, bloodthirsty and dangerous to the team.
Dangerous to Wanda.
You lowered your arm and drove your fist hard into the post with a pained grunt. You promised Wanda you were right behind her and what you planned on doing was only going to do the opposite.
You saw the fear in her eyes. You couldn’t put her through anything else if you came out of this fight scathed and bruised. No less, the team would be suspicious.
You’d have to wait.
Wanda waited up for you, no matter the hour it was now, she wouldn’t rest until she knew you were safe. The red hue of her magic glowed in the darkness of the room, the only other source of light was one of the twin lamps on the bedside table.
Her head shot up and her magic ceased when she heard the doors open to your shared room, your form emerged from the dark hallway and promptly closed the doors behind you.
“Y/N,” she gasped your name and sat up on her knees, mattress dipping beneath her.
Your eyes met hers, amber flickering just faintly behind your pupils. With a growl, your face goes flush. Wanda was dressed down into nothing but an oversized shirt and what you chalked up to be her underwear.
“H-hey,” you choked out as your hand rubbed the back of your neck. Your eyes darted elsewhere to keep your gaze - that now festered with a hunger - away from Wanda.
‘Fucking hell!’
“What?”
“What?” Your eyes widened as they stared into hers, you fought the tempting urge to let your gaze travel down her body.
Was this the work of your soulmate tie or your little crush?
Wanda tilted her head curiously, her nose scrunched a little as the corner of her lips turned up. You appeared less troubled by whatever it was before. Now you were… you.
That you, whenever she would walk into the same room you occupied. That you, that often asked her how she was doing and complimented her.
Her flustered wolf with the red ball.
“I’m good, I just er—“ you glanced towards the ensuite bathroom with a wave of your hand. “I’m just gonna, ya know, get ready for bed.”
“Okay.” Wanda let out a light giggle. You were quick to gather your change of clothes and hurried into the bathroom. You may have taken a little longer than you’d have liked, but you had to get your bearings together before you re-entered that bedroom.
‘To have her and mark her right now— no, no, none of that! She’s your friend…
Mate…
Fuck.’
You face-palmed yourself with another growl. The faint glimmer of the wolf behind your eyes had now brightened once more but with a newfound interest.
‘I was so close to telling her. I missed my chance.
Could tell her now…
No. Ain’t doing that.’
You walked out of the bathroom to find Wanda settled in bed and under the covers much to the conflict of your relief and disappointment. You climbed into bed beside her, being sure to leave a good amount of space between you both.
Was she really happy to share a room with you for the duration of your mission?
You flicked off the lamp and laid back against the pillow with a heavy, tired sigh. Both your arms rested underneath your head.
“Wolfie?” Wanda’s voice whispered into the darkness. You hum in response. “I’m a little cold…”
You lifted your head slightly to look at her, able to see every detail on her face in the dark. A fine trait to have until you woke up first thing with the fucking sun in your eyes.
It’s why you opted to always have the curtains drawn closed.
“The thermostat is a bit rusty, but I could get you an extra blanket if you’d like?”
She shook her head, fiery hair and cheek nuzzling into her pillow. A faint, shy smile on her plump lips. Lips you wanted so badly to kiss.
“I don’t want to trouble you with that.”
You raised a brow at that. Why did she bring it up if she didn’t want you to resolve it?
Before you could say anything, she moved closer into your side, her arm curled over your stomach.
Your muscles tensed as her cheek laid where your shoulder and neck met. Anything you did want to say completely went out the window of your thought process.
“Much better,” she sighed almost silently, her breath even and slow. Your arm wrapped over her shoulder and Wanda relaxed more against your side.
“You good?” You asked, albeit hesitantly. She softly hummed in return and you couldn’t restrain your smile.
By the soft thump of her heartbeat and her quiet breaths, she’d fallen asleep quickly. The warmth of your body must have really helped her.
You turned your head and your nose brushed against her scalp, lips hovering over the crown of her hairline. “Good night…”
‘Mate.’
You awoke to the sound of voices coming from downstairs. New voices that didn’t belong to anyone on your team. You grumbled as you sat up, arms pulled up to stretch your muscles.
That’s when you realised the bed was vacant beside you. A piece of paper sat on Wanda’s pillow and you plucked it, reading the delicate handwriting.
‘Didn’t want to wake you. Come downstairs when you’re awake, Wolfie! P.S you were really warm and comfy’
You huffed at that, a smirk plastered on your tired features. For a moment you’d forgotten about the strange voices until you put the letter aside.
You frowned and your glare landed on the closed doors.
You stood up and silently, you opened the doors. You moved equally as quietly down the hallway until you reached the top of the stairs, thankfully you were obscured from sight on the first floor.
“What a wonderful place you have here. So, you lot just moved in?”
“Yep,” Steve said with a chuckle, “we all pitched in together to start fresh from the city. We’d heard good things about Alaska, stunning views and a lot of opportunities.”
You applauded Steve’s skill to act like a civilian. A true and natural actor when it came to undercover ops.
Too bad your rather aggressive nature tended to give you a bad impression on people. It’s why you were often a background actor. Someone who was passing through, someone who wasn’t a permanent fixture to the attention of your targets.
Exactly the reason why you hid upstairs and eavesdropped.
The man downstairs gave an amused hum. “And a lot of game,” he mused, you could hear the test in his voice.
Yes, you knew that voice.
“Oh yeah, quite the trophies hunters claim up here. We’re quite the group ourselves, James particularly.”
‘Oh, Steve.’
You could smell the sudden change in Bucky’s scent. You rolled your eyes.
“Oh?”
“Mm, when I’m up to it. I only go after the best game when it’s trophy season.”
“Then why don’t we go hunting together this weekend, huh? It is game season and I think it’d help break the ice as neighbours.“
You stiffened in your place, back rigid against the wall. You smelt it in the air. Each one of your teammates had a sense of unease. They must’ve known something was up, this man - these people - were undoubtedly your targets; drawn in just as Fury had predicted.
Only, he didn’t disclose what they were with the others. Only you knew.
“Neighbour?” Sam asked and the man laughed.
“That’s right! Over the mountain ridge out that way. A lodge like this one, you can’t miss it.”
“Sure, we might come by. Any particular spots for good game?” Tony asked, he’d actually fooled you for a second there with how invested he sounded in the idea of hunt and game.
“This valley is quite the place for hunting, actually. The best.”
Your eyes screwed shut, your mind slowly slipping away into that dark space you’d purposefully left behind.
You wished they’d just leave.
“So it’s just you seven here? Nobody else?” He asked and your breath froze.
“Nope, just us,” Wanda answered.
“I see… hmm,” he replied, his response slow before a second silence befell him. You heard him clear his nasal before he shyly said, “Apologies, the cold season tends to make my nose sensitive. Well then, I’d best be going before the wife hangs my head over the hearth. Be seeing you, neighbours and welcome to Alaska.”
You breathed out a sigh of relief when he and the men with him left. Your team bid their farewells to your neighbours and the front door closed behind your departing guests.
Your team was in danger.
‘And it’s my fucking fault!’
Werewolves don’t get sensitive to the cold. You lot were basically self-established heating machines to withstand the cold climates.
No. He’d sniffed you out and your pills to hide your wolf scent had worn off from yesterday.
Your scent was known and he knew that his new neighbours had a little secret of their own. The muscles around your mouth and nose twitch, teeth clenched hard together as a rumble vibrates in your chest.
How could you be so careless? You could smell them before you even opened your bedroom door and yet you failed to keep your own scent hidden.
“Well, that was something,” Natasha huffed and you heard Clint grunt in an agreeable fashion.
“You can say that again. The guy had a weird look in his eye when he spoke about the whole hunting thing.”
“I don’t think he hunts ordinary animals,” Bucky drawled, voice laced with his deep-rooted suspicion. He was right to be and you were glad he - or anyone on your team - didn’t fall for the facade.
They hunted animals to keep people off their scents but elk, bears and beavers weren’t their preferred quarry.
They prided themselves in hunting their own kind. A sick, perverted desire to slaughter other packs. Not only that, they had a sickening obsession with hunting humans. To do things no person should be subjected to.
Mother Nature scorned such vile behaviour with hatred beyond words.
And this pack had connections to a Hydra resurgence group that intended to operate within Alaska.
They had to be stopped and your temper was running short. Sooner or later you were gonna wolf out and you wanted the snow to be stained red with that pack’s blood.
You should have done so last night, keeping your cover be damned.
You finally decided to head downstairs, the necessity to conceal your footsteps no longer mattered.
All eyes fell to you and you waved in response to the uttered good mornings and greetings.
“I take it you heard all that upstairs?” Tony asked you, doing you the courtesy of getting a cup of coffee ready for you. You nodded with a snarl, “yeah, and we’re gonna need a new plan.”
“Why?” Steve asked, brows knitted together as he leaned against the wall. Tony passed you the cup of steaming coffee.
You took a gulp of it before your eyes looked to Steve and the others. You were silent, gaze elsewhere as your thumb massaged the handle of your mug.
“What aren’t you telling us, Y/N?” Natasha asked from her place at the dining table, her own mug nestled against her palm. Still, you didn’t answer.
“Because they know I’m here.” That’s all you said. What you intended to say. Did they truly need to know that they were dealing with werewolves? Probably, but you had other plans.
“How? We told them it was just us,” Sam argued. You only shook your head. “They know I’m here. We need a new plan quickly. They’re not gonna wait until the weekend now.”
They didn’t like your answer, or rather, lack of answers.
“You’re still hiding something from us.” You growled over the rim of your cup. Steve was pushing it. “If there is something about these guys that you know about, you need to tell us.”
You placed your cup down on the countertop, hunched over on your stool. “Werewolves don’t get sick little noses because of the cold, Captain. The only thing that makes us sick are infections from wounds and poisons engineered from wolfsbane and silver. To which, Hydra has been known to have an abundance of.”
They wanted the truth and you gave it to them on a platter. You allowed them to have their stunned silence, no matter how suffocated it made your nose feel.
“You mean—“
“He could smell me, Tony.” Your eyes slowly rolled to meet his and for the first time since you met the billionaire, you saw the colour drain from his face as he stared into your eyes.
“He’s the same damn thing I am and because of that, that leaves us in a very compromised position.”
Another wave of silence filled the open space. You downed the rest of your coffee in a few gulps. You couldn’t even process the taste.
“What do we do?” You heard Bucky ask from behind you. You turned to see him stare at you, blue eyes piercing into you to get the answer they needed. Wanda stood next to him.
She’d been quiet this whole time and that fear wedged itself sharply into your heart. To see the uncertainty of the mission because it had already gone sideways.
“The whole guide shit was only half true. Fury sent me in as a guard,” you began, “but if you’re asking me what I really think we should do is get you guys back to headquarters.”
“What do you mean? Y/N, we’re not going to leave you behind. We’re going to complete this mission together.” Steve was pissed that you’d suggest such a thing.
“We do have two capable super soldiers, an enhanced witch who can move things with her mind, an ex-spy, two mediocre talents at best and myself: the brilliant genius that I am,” Tony said. How you wanted to slap the arrogance from his head so hard. “And also a werewolf. What could go wrong?”
You shook your head again, tongue running over your teeth with a tsk. “You don’t get it, Stark. This pack has been here for many years. They know the terrain better than any of you. They will use that to their advantage. On top of that, they have ties to the Hydra resurgence. Tony, if I don’t get you guys out of here, there will be no getting out of here.”
You turned to the others as you stood from your stool, your eyes coated in a hot, watery layer.
“These werewolves are not your ordinary pack. They are literal hunting dogs for Hydra. You’ve all seen Bucky as the Winter Soldier…”
You didn’t wish to bring it up, not to see the pain in those blue eyes of his. Bucky and you seemed to get along quite well. You both understood each other. His time with Hydra was not something you brought up lightly; you had a point to make. They couldn’t grasp the severity of the situation. They hadn’t experienced what you did.
You needed to get your team out of Alaska because they were yours to protect. They were your pack.
You take a deep breath in, your eyes scanned each awaiting face until they landed on Wanda.
“Now imagine that type of scenario, but times it by ten. You have to trust me on this one. If I stay behind, I can fend them off while you guys get home and get reinforcements.”
“No, Y/N…,” you heard Wanda whisper with a shaken breath. You didn’t want to see the tears in her eyes, but you turned anyway to face her.
“Wanda, you have no idea what you’re getting yourselves into with this pack… but I do. What they did to the family that lived here is something I will not see happen again. Not to you.”
What remained of that day all felt like a blur. You’d all discussed the new plan and now, after two days of waiting, you were going to execute the escape plan.
The howls from the woods had gotten closer each night. Their arrival was just as you had said. They weren’t going to wait until the weekend.
“I don’t like this plan, Y/N,” Wanda said, voice quivering in her throat, “what if something bad happens to you while we’re gone? What if they kill you?”
You shook your head. “They won’t kill me. I won’t make it easy for them.”
Wanda scowled at this and she rounded the bed to where you were. She placed a hand over yours, clenched together between your thighs.
“This isn’t about making it difficult for them, this is about your survival. You said it yourself, these werewolves aren’t like any other. They’re different because of what Hydra did to them.”
Your jaw clenched tightly at her words. Her soft skin against yours made your hand tingle, her breath so close to beating along the apple of your cheek.
“But so am I,” you said lowly. You turned your chin towards Wanda, her eyes searched your face and your uttered words for some semblance of understanding.
“I… I still don’t like this idea. Just come back with us, please…” Tears wept down her cheeks and she didn’t hide the small sniffle.
“It has to be this way, Wanda.” You stood up and pulled her into your chest without hesitation, her arms immediately encircled around your torso.
“This is personal. What they did to—“ you grimaced at the memory. The blood that splattered the walls and the snow alike. Carnage like no other you’d seen stained the house secretly. The clean-up may have hidden the history but your memory did not let it go.
It couldn’t. The only way the nightmares would stop is if you uprooted it from the source.
“What they did to this family - and more - is unforgivable. I have to be the one to do this. I can’t stand the thought of losing you, you’re my—“
This fucking soulmate tie. Why was it so difficult for you to tell her? Maybe she was right, you could possibly get killed and she would never know the truth because you were too scared to tell her.
Your arms squeezed around her a little tighter, hands quivering as they balled into fists until your knuckles were white and your claws unsheathed from your nail beds.
“I’m what?”
“I-I’m just…”
‘Scared.’
“Scared of what?” Her words made the air gasp from your lungs. You blanked your mind to shield it from her reading anything more. You just held her close. It was all what you felt capable of. With her head resting against your chest, she was able to hear the bombardment of your heartbeat.
“I can’t say it,” you answered but Wanda shook her head. She was done letting this fear eat away at you from the inside.
“Tell me, or I’m going in there,” she ordered firmly, her hand reached out to grab your chin and hold it so she could rest her forehead against yours. You heard the smirk in her voice.
You chuffed at her light attempt at humour, to make the currently dark moment a little brighter than it was.
“I am scared that I will lose a second time. And I won’t survive that agony again.”
Wanda nodded, her nose bumped against yours and your lips danced so close to one another. It was a struggle to not close the slight distance between you to kiss her.
“You still haven’t told me what I am to you.”
“I’ll tell you when this is all over,” you sighed, voice hesitant as you slightly withdraw your face from hers. Wanda’s hands slid to your cheeks and held you so you couldn’t pull away anymore.
“Promise?”
The corners of your lips tug into a smirk. “I promise.”
You caught the way her eyes flickered down slightly to your lips and out of habit, your tongue darted along your bottom to wet it. Your eyes did the same to hers, plump and soft looking. Always tempting.
“Kiss me, Wolfie.” Her voice called to you softly, the plea of your mate making you cave as you brushed your lips against hers.
If you did this, you weren’t just friends. You saw her as more than a friend. Whatever she saw more than you realised, was it more than a friend for her?
Did she see a companion in you? A mate?
Your lips pressed into hers and your chest relaxed as the air was drawn from you, a deep growl resounded in the back of your throat.
Wanda tilted her head to deepen the kiss with a breathless moan.
Your hunger consumed you. Your hands drifted down the length of her back until they reached her thighs, you knocked her knees and she gasped. Your tongue darted through her parted lips as her legs wrapped around your waist, your strength supporting her as if she were a feather.
Her hands ran through the length of your hair with another moan and that unmistakable swell of arousal pooled in your groin.
Fuck, how you wanted to claim her right now. That wolfish hunger, selfish in want, desired to make the bite now.
But you would wait. You’d wait for Wanda and you’d wait for the rest of eternity for her. You couldn’t say she’d do the same, but you damn well hoped.
You fell forward to lay Wanda down on the bed, your arms supported your weight like pillars on either side of her head. Her hands pulled you closer to her, even if the fight for air was growing too much to bear.
You smelt it on her, the sweet aroma of rose tinged by an even sweeter scent; her arousal. Your hips bucked against hers and she gasped out, her fingers dug into you with a whimper of your name.
Oh, how you wanted to hear that sound again. Her hips in turn began to grind against you, the friction of your pants made her legs quiver around your waist.
You growled against her open mouth, her tongue submitted to you long before her back met the mattress. Her hand flew to your belt to loosen it but you captured her wrist and she stopped, you pulled away from her lips with a deep breath.
“We don’t have to rush this, Sweetheart,” you pant, head nuzzling against hers. She smiled shyly and a red hue coloured her cheeks and nose.
Not that you blamed her, your own face was a fiery mess of its own.
“Sorry, I got a little wild,” she giggled and you flashed her a wolfish grin, chuckling deeply.
“Says the witch with the literal wolf on top of her.”
You brushed your nose along the curve of her jaw, inhaling her intoxicating scent. It made you feel how you presumed people felt when they got drunk.
You lifted your head so you could see her now. Her eyes stared up at you and that smile that scared away the darkness was there.
How you adored her. What you wouldn’t do for the woman beneath you, you could not name.
You’d do anything for your mate.
Your hand caressed her cheek, thumb running over her chin. “What do you see in me, Wanda?”
You were curious. She always looked at you with a sense that she saw something in you nobody else could.
“I see many things within you.”
“Name one,” you urged. Silence ensued as
her lips thinned in thought. Her gaze softened, perhaps you misread it because of the lighting in the room. You thought for a moment you saw love.
Her mouth opened to finally give you her answer when a knock pounded against the door - and also your sharpened hearing. A grimace twisted your features.
Wanda offered a sad smile when the realisation that the small world you and Wanda were in had come to an end.
There was a darkness out in the world that needed to be rid of. That temporary light had to withdraw for the time being.
You rolled off of Wanda and she stood up quickly as the door opened, after you’d beckoned whoever it was to enter.
“We’re ready to head off,” Natasha said from the doorway, eyes suspiciously squinted between you and Wanda with a smirk.
You cleared your throat when her knowing eyes landed on you. “Alright. Thank you, Natasha,” you bit down the bark in your words.
When you two were left alone again, you looked to Wanda. “Don’t go getting yourself killed now. Promise me, Wolf.”
“I promise…”
‘… Mate.’
The sun was setting over the valley, the last rays of light quick to fade as night encroached. You would have to hurry to get everyone on the Quinjet safely.
“Everyone ready?” You asked as you opened the front door and your team nodded. There was no time to drag their bags along. You’d all suited up and gathered your necessities.
“Let’s go,” Steve said behind you.
You exited the house first, a quick assessment of your surroundings, you signalled to your team to follow.
“Keep together and in front of me. Go!” You urged, letting Steve take the lead to the Quinjet while you covered the team’s rear. It’d allow you to see any oncoming attacks.
Wanda kept glancing back at you, to make sure you weren’t too far behind, her own fear that you’d be targeted first evident in her eyes.
Twigs and branches snapped in the woods around you, the scent of your team polluted the air with their growing anxiety of an impending attack.
“There it is, get going!” You called out, relief flooding the entire team in a shroud when the ramp was already lowered. Your hand brushed Wanda’s back as you urged her forward into a sprint, Bucky and Natasha beside her. You knew they would look after her.
A colossal weight slammed into your side from the thicket of trees up the snowy hillside, your body instinctively shifted to the mass of muscle and fur now laced with snow. A roar tore from your vocals at the beast that’d separated you from the others.
An expected tactic.
You charged up the slope you’d been pushed down onto, leaping into the air and shoved your opponent into the ground beneath him. The hillside was crawling with the ambush, they moved swiftly down to join the first attacker. Most charged for you, but the few that ran for the jet didn’t escape your notice.
You bellowed a warning roar, Wanda among the group that guarded the ramp as Tony and Sam went to get the jet fired up. A clawed hand swept across your face hard, slashing you blind for a second and knocked you onto the ground. Your teeth sunk into the flesh of your attacker’s arm, a pained yelp echoed in the frosty wind. Your hind legs kicked at their toned stomach, claws tearing through fur and tissue as you launched them away; a chunk of flesh clenched between your canines.
A flood of blood wept from the chunk in your mouth, you dropped it with a wet splash to the snow. A roar came from behind as another came at you but an arrow fired into her eye, her attack faltered as you rolled to the side. Wanda’s magic grappled hold of the wolf and flung her further back, her back smashed into a thick trunk with a growl.
“The jet’s on, let’s get going!” Tony’s voice yelled above the ensuing chaos. You barked in agreement and cocked your head in encouragement for the team to leave.
“Y/N!” Wanda yelled out for you, fingertips touched by the tendrils of her magic as reached out for you; the ramp began to close. She made to run to you.
“Wanda!” Steve called in his attempt to halt Wanda. One of the werewolves ran at Wanda, clawed hands outstretched to tear at her.
Just as you went to jump to her defence, teeth clamped a hold of one of your hind legs. You yowled and used your other leg to kick at him but he avoided your defensive kicks.
Wanda screamed when a large, clawed hand grabbed hold of her leg, Steve and Bucky held onto her to keep her from being dragged out. Your leg arched towards your stomach and with another kick, you managed to loosen the jaws around your ligament and you charged at the wolf that tried to drag Wanda out from the jet.
You ignored the agonised yelp caught in your throat, replaced by a deep growl as you jaws bit down and yanked at the bushy tail that dangled ahead of you; even when two new sets of jaws set their attack on both your legs this time. Flesh and muscle would be torn to shreds but that mattered little to you.
You’d survive it. The one that had a hold of Wanda released her and Steve and Bucky dragged her further back, even when she tried to reach for you again. “Y/N!”
“Go!”
Your roar cracked across the valley like a whip.
You snatched hold of the tail again before the werewolf could make a run for it. The two on your legs tried to shake you off your balance, you pulled the tail in closer and with all the strength you could muster, you flung him at a nearby rock side. His skull pelted against the dark stone and fell limp on the ground.
The jet rose up just as the lip of the ramp closed.
Wanda’s eyes glowed a dangerous aura of scarlet.
‘Be safe—!”
‘I will.’
The two jaws released your legs as you were hit from the side once again. This one was heavier, with more anger behind it.
You let out whines and growls as you tumbled down the snowy terrain and onto the ice lake. You lifted your head to see him approach down from the tree line.
The beast that had sniffed you out. That intended to harm your team when he invited them over.
Who was responsible for killing your family.
“You’ve grown stronger,” he rumbled with a tilt of his head, his dark lips twisted into a crooked, fanged smile.
His stare was bloodthirsty.
“You should have been killed in that lab when Hydra had the chance. A wasted specimen who couldn’t obey a simple order.”
“I… was not going… to kill… innocents!” You ignored the way your ankles threatened to buckle under your weight, you stood on your hind legs to match the alpha’s height.
The remainder of his pack gathered behind him, forming a crescent around you. Car lights flittered through the tree line.
Hydra agents. Your muzzle wrinkled with a snarl and your teeth bared until the line of your bloodstained gums showed.
“Well. We tried.”
He surged forward faster than you could perceive to dodge his attack. His teeth sank deep into your shoulder, a high pitched yelp that mirrored a scream travelled across the ice.
He pushed you down. He had you pinned, the layer of ice cool against your belly. His jaws ripped and shook you, a pawed hand pressed against you as he tore fur, flesh and muscle across your back.
His pack barked and yipped in their sickening cheers for their leader to maim you. Your jaws snapped again and again until you finally had his unguarded limb in your grasp. He snarled as your teeth gnashed down repeatedly, bone splintering until he kicked you aside.
His ears were pinned against his head with a low, pained whine. His tongue hesitated to lick his wound and his eyes, full of hatred, darted towards you.
“I should have killed you when I had the chance.”
“Yeah…”
Your eyes squeezed shut, the pain from your shoulder down the line of your back stained your coat with dark crimson, the pain excruciating that steam rose from your wounds.
A guttural growl rose from the depths of your chest, anger festering in the old wounds.
“You really should have.”
You ran at him and he met you halfway. Claws and teeth gnashed and swept at each other. Triumph in your fight with the alpha turned into moments of being overpowered; but you’d find a way to slip out and regain the upper hand.
A series of explosions caught you off guard. You looked up to see the jet had been hit, one of the engines on fire. The jet sputtered and sank. You whimpered out when the Quinjet crashed into the side of the tall mountain peak.
Thankfully it hadn’t exploded. Everyone had to be alright. You had to hold onto hope.
You made an attempt to run for the mountain when something flew towards you and you ducked out of the way, a large harpoon penetrated the ice with a thunderous crack.
Silver.
You could smell the poisonous tinge of it.
The armoured vehicles circled you, and Hydra agents jumped out, armed with what you only imagined were silver bullets. You roared and snarled at anyone who made a move to shoot at you.
“Nets ready!”
“Get it tied down and back to base!”
The mounted machines on the vehicles fired at you, whipping through the air as one net after another held you down. When you managed to slip out from beneath the nets, agents threw their hands forward, ropes entangled around your limbs as you struggled to break free.
“Get the humans!”
You turned your gaze back to the alpha at his command. His pack and him ran off towards the mountain.
“Wanda! No!”
You’d heard the commotion from the mountain. Their screams. Your father’s howl.
You didn’t wait a moment as you almost got yourself killed sliding down the slopes and cliff sides to reach home faster.
Your pack was in trouble. You panted as the wind attacked your fur as your claws cracked the surface of the ice beneath you.
Your mother was who you heard, followed by your youngest siblings. Your heart felt as if it’d stopped beating.
Your jaws came around the neck of their attacker and with a jerk of your head you heard the bones of their neck snap.
Your heart broke so very hard. Why did you leave them alone?
The twins laid together side by side, their smaller bodies nestled in the snow. Around them was a halo of their blood.
Blood that could have been avoided if you hadn’t left. You whimpered, your nose pushed into the fur.
“Wake up, wake up please… no, please…”
Not far from them you glanced up to see your mother’s body. Her fur blended in with the snow.
A rare white pelt. Now tainted with blood.
It was there your heart grew…
Ice cold. Your maws latched hold of the ropes that constrained you from protecting those who needed you.
Who you promised yourself you would protect. Even if it killed you. You would not allow that alpha or his pack to massacre your pack again.
Your mate.
The agents stood no chance. They screamed as you shifted your weight to fling them into one another or the vehicles. You rammed and smashed into the armoured cars, destroying most and leaving the rest to burn when you tore the engine apart and flung it into another car.
The ice cracked beneath you and you moved swiftly. You didn’t allow your wounds to alter your performance, no matter the pain or trail of blood you left behind.
You pursued the pack that made their way to the cliff side. They jumped and leapt onto any vantage points but they didn’t know this mountain like you did.
You knew the best routes for quick travel up the terrain of the mountain. Whoever was in your way was shown no mercy. Your large hands ripped them off their balance and flung them off the cliff side to whatever fate awaited them below.
Wanda softly grunted with a hand pressed to her temple.
“Steve,” she mumbled as he knelt beside her. His hand helped to support her weight while she got her bearings.
“Wanda, are you alright?”
“I’m fine, what happened?” She asked as her eyes focused on his blue eyes. “The jet’s engine was hit. It’s pretty obvious they wanted to knock us down.”
Wanda didn’t respond, not even as Clint and Natasha joined her and Steve. “Is everyone else ok?” Steve asked Clint and he nodded.
“Yeah, the crash just took them by surprise is all.”
“Come on, let’s get to cover.” Natasha’s hand found Wanda’s arm and pulled her to her feet, careful not to startle or aggravate any potential injuries.
Wanda pushed away from the ex-widow.
“No, I have to see if Y/N is alright!”
“Wanda, we have to get to safety,” Steve argued back but Wanda would not hear it.
“They promised me!” She choked out, “you have no idea how I feel about them. The bond we have. This is why I must go to them!”
“They’ll be alright,” Steve assured with a hand pressed to her arm, “this is Y/N we’re talking about. If anyone can fend them off, it’s them.”
Gunfire fired down the cliff side. “Stay here with her, I’ll help the others.” Natasha and Clint watched as Steve ran off to defend their flank with Sam, Tony and Bucky.
A series of growls tumbled over the mountain ledge, glowing eyes crept into view as three hulking forms climbed up.
Clint knocked an arrow to his bow, stance low and ready to perform a rapid fire, Wanda’s hands danced together before her as the glowing scarlet of her magic swarmed about her fingertips. Natasha drew her pistol and took aim at the middle werewolf.
Natasha was the first to fire. Round after round only made the beast grunt as if bitten by a fly as he charged forward. Clint shocked him with his knocked arrow and Wanda thrusted her hands forward with a grunt.
The werewolf was pushed over the cliff side with a howl.
The werewolf to their right leapt at Clint, barely ducking in time. He rolled to the side and shot another arrow while Natasha took cover from an oncoming blow from the second. Clint was knocked back and used his bow to block the maw of his opponent from mauling him.
“Clint!” Natasha yelled out, Wanda waved her hands and pushed the werewolf off of Clint, granting him the opportunity to overpower it. He and the beast went tumbling down into a crevice in the mountain, having looped its neck between his bow and the drawstring.
The last werewolf swiped at Wanda but Natasha threw herself in front of it, grunting when claws tore at her arm sleeve. A clean gash bled through her suit. The werewolf rose it’s arm to come down at Natasha again when Wanda used her magic to fling it towards the edge.
It bellowed a distorted roar at Wanda only to whimper when your teeth mashed down into its jugular with a baritone growl. Your amber eyes the bright fire beneath burning coals as you crunched down further. With another whine, you ripped your maw clean from the wolf’s neck and they fell to the bottom of the mountain.
“Y/N,” Wanda gasped out as she ran to you. You dragged your body over the rocky ledge, Wanda was able to see the blood and wounds that covered you.
“Good to see you’re alive,” Natasha said as she held her bleeding arm, her attention averted to Clint who was still standing his ground against his opponent.
 “I gotta help Clint!” She said hurriedly and rushed off to Clint’s aid. “Be careful!” Wanda yelled after her, hands attentive as they gently stroked along your neck.
A soft whine wheezed up your throat. Gunfire continued to ring, now having travelled further up the mountain near where you and Wanda were.
Natasha and Clint climbed back up a short moment later, Wanda tugged Clint to rest as blood trailed down his face.
“Shit, you weren’t kidding about these guys, Wolfie. What exactly did Hydra do to them?”
Your vocal cords strained the rumbling chuff, hot air fanned out of your nostrils.
“Come on, we should help the others,” said Wanda urgently. You, Clint and Natasha nodded and began to follow her but a blur flew from one of the higher up ledges.
Wanda screamed when she was pinned down, the form having pushed her back some distance from you and the others.
“Wanda!” You roared, you leapt towards her and the alpha without a second thought. The three of you fell over the lip of the mountainside, your body instinctively clawed Wanda out of the alpha’s grasp and encircled around her; caging her from the fall.
Wanda was tucked between the heat of your body above and the snow against her front,  both of you stared at the alpha in front of you.
His wolfish face formed into a snarl, saliva and blood dripped from his lips.
Blood dripped from yours, fangs bared right back at him.
“Protective, aren’t you? Found yourself a little mate?”
Your jaws stretched open with a protective roar.
“That struck a nerve.”
The alpha jumped at you but this time you were prepared. You arched your body, arms latched hold of him as you both rolled back and over another lip, this time the fall was more steep and less intruded by any sharp rock edges. Your back collided with wooden blanks as yours and the alphas weight broke through it and crashed into the dusty keep below.
Wanda shrieked your name. The sound was a fracture to your very soul, the tie to your mate tugged a little too hard for your liking.
You barely were up on your own four limbs when the alpha continued his barrage of attacks. Each hit was ruthless as his claws swiped and tore at your body. His teeth fractured a number of your bones as you attempted to pry him off. He grappled the scruff of your neck and slammed you face first against anything he could.
He tossed you back and your back smashed into the crumbling bricks behind you.
The sky of Alaska’s first rays of dawn illuminated through the old, stone archway with a pink and orange hue. Snow bellowed in with the gusts of wind.
For a moment you both stared at each other. Covered in the wounds bred from conflict.
Your shoulders rose and fell with each pant, pain rippled across your body and your fur bristled against the cool breeze.
His glowing red hues danced in the darkness on his side, and the amber in yours did the same on your side.
If you killed him, it would be over. Without their leader they were hopeless. Defenceless. Weak.
“Do you really think you are one of them? You’re not. You never will be. Mated to a human. She’ll break your heart and then… then you will become as cruel as I.”
“I am nothing like you. I will never be anything like you.”
Your hackles raised at him. He snarled back at you.
“We are monsters! Just embrace that! You will never be anything but that!”
You averted your gaze for a moment. He was right. You were a monster. You huffed lowly, ears twitching slightly when the breeze tickled against them. Mother Nature thought otherwise.
“I’ve embraced it. But if I’m a monster… then I’m a good one that hunts the bad ones.”
You ran at each other with teeth bared and claws out. Snarls and growls echoed in the chamber of the ruin as you swiped at one another, biting into the flesh of one another.
Carnage.
Monster against monster.
Mother Nature was not always as peaceful and beautiful as many thought she was.
She could be cruel.
Heartless.
And it was all in the name of balance. It was fair.
His elbow drove into your face and knocked you back, he pinned your weight to the ground as his muzzle dug into your stomach and chest. You yelped and kicked your legs against him as the savagery of his mauling tore away at you.
Your claws swiped him upside the head again and again until he pulled his head away. A distorted scream came from the depths of his black and bloody throat.
His clawed hand swept across your head, slamming it into the stones beneath you repeatedly in rapid repetition.
Any moment he would smash your skull.
When he figured you’d endured enough, he stared down at the sight of you; ears flopped and a whimper struggling to escape your beaten and half torn apart chest. He raised his hand high. The light bounced off the blood, making it almost shine in the Alaskan morning.
Fairness.
Was this fair? Perhaps not for you but for Mother Nature? Who were you to fight against her?
You’d been doing it for seven years. You were done.
You had embraced it all. What you were, what you went through, and what you were to become; come what may.
“You could have been something more. Something great.”
“I already am. They made me something great.”
With a shake of his head, maybe calling you a fool beneath the huff of his breathy exhale, he prepared for his final slash.
A bright red aura surrounded his arm just as it went to strike against you. Unmoving, the alpha whined when his arm refused to move. Wanda stood just in sight above the ruined keep.
You saw the determined shimmer of scarlet in her eyes.
He roared at you in his confusion and you arched your neck forward. Your muzzle stained red once more when your teeth crushed bone, minced flesh and punctured his artery.
He stilled above you and his weight drifted until it rested against yours. The sun finally began its rise over the distant peaks. You grunted as your limbs shoved the corpse, rolling him through the stone archway and down into the depths below. The ice could have him now.
You didn’t know how long it took for your team to make their descent into the ruins you found yourself in. Your eyes were glazed over, the amber of your fiery hues slowly faded. Each breath you took was stunted from the damage you inflicted.
Blurred forms moved down towards you, snow danced across your vision when a particular gust of wind blew through the archway.
Voices beckoned you by your name but you couldn’t respond.
“What are you doing here, Big Wolf?” You knew that voice. That adorable, innocent voice. “Big Wolf… why are you leaving them behind?”
‘Hm.’
Their voices were inseparable, even in Mother Nature’s light.
Your vision grew dark but the eyes of your mate were the last thing you saw.
“Please, Wolfie… you promised.”
You inhaled deeply as the smell of early stages of rabbit stew filled your nose.
“Mother?” Your eyes were coated in a blurred layer of sleep. How long had you been out? Your mother was in the kitchen, humming softly as she prepared the freshly skinned rabbits.
“You’re awake,” she chuckled as she peered at you on the couch from her place at the stove.
“You’re awake, Big Wolf!” One of the twins shouted, the other not far behind. Their small feet thumped against the floor in their dash to get to you.
You wheeze when your breath was knocked from your lungs as the twins plop themselves - rather happily as well - on top of you.
“You were asleep for so long!” One of them giggled. You chuckled at the enthusiastic pout on their lips.
“You promised you’d take us up that mountain before dark!”
“I…” you paused for a moment with a furrowed brow. Not long did you sigh and went to move. “I know. We can still go.”
They both jumped off of you as they raced each other to the door. “Yaaaay!”
You shook your head with a chuckle as you walked up to your mother, patting your two other siblings in greeting as they passed. “You guys coming or what?”
“Yeah! We’ll be out front in a second!” Said your second younger sibling.
You looked to your mother who had chopped some vegetables on the wooden board, expertly. Even still, she never lost her concentration though her skill was unmatched and she could do it blindfolded.
She never overestimated herself. Never pushed herself to prove anything to the sake of being seen or respected. She did what she could with all she had.
And that was enough for everyone.
She turned to put the chopped vegetables into the pot. Her eyes turned to you finally and she grinned.
You often reflected your father in both demeanour, stature and appearance; but the one thing you prided yourself for was that you had your mother’s eyes.
It was the one reprieve you had. When you’d stare at yourself - beyond the wolf - you could see your family just from the colour of your eyes.
“Something the matter?” She asked. You shook your head silently and stepped forward. Your arms wrapped her to you and she guffawed.
“Finally gotten into the habit of being affectionate, have you?”
You huffed at her words with a smirk. “Hmph. I guess I have.”
You should have known. A wolf’s memory was good. Often too good. This wasn’t a memory in that old lodge tucked into the valley, nestled near the lakeside.
You and your mother pulled away to look at each other again. Her eyes were misted over and yours did the same.
Her hand rose to caress your cheek tenderly. With a mother’s touch.
You leaned into her palm with a rumbling purr. “It’s time to stop running. Let go of that guilt that weighs you down.”
You opened your eyes to meet her tearful eyes. “We’ve never left you. We have always been here, just know that in your heart.”
“I will, Mother…”
“You have to go now or you’ll be missed,” she said. You knew what she meant.
She looked towards the front door for a moment. “I’ll take them up the mountain for you,” she whispered with a kind smile.
An understanding smile. She knew you had others waiting for you.
“Thanks.” You embraced her again. Her warmth comforted you.
“I love you, Y/N.“
“I love you too.”
“Vitals are stabilising.”
“Good, that’s really good. Let’s get them on a new drip.”
“Wanda, here you go, Honey. Have some coffee.”
“They’ve been like this for a while. What if… they don’t make it?”
Your eyes peeled open slowly. The bright lights above flooded in. Wanda lurched forward with a hand clasped over her mouth with a sob.
“I beg to differ,” you rasped, your hand outstretched and your fingers combed through her hair.
Your name was said by voices you recognised all at once and many faces greeted you on the other side of that dark tunnel. Relieved smiles and sighs, tearful eyes and many uttering your welcomed return.
Wanda grasped hold of your hand, the clear, thin tube of your drip made you aware you were in the medic ward.
New York. The compound.
“Damn, Wolfie,” Tony sighed, “you gave us all quite the scare for the past two weeks.”
“Two weeks? W-what happened?”
“You were in a really bad way when we found you, Y/N,” said Sam, eyes casted down to conceal the way his eyes glistened.
“We all thought we lost you a couple times there.”
You tried to shuffle your body to sit up more when pain shot through you from all directions.  You laid a hand on the wound that reached over the entirety of your shoulder. You hissed, teeth clenched hard and everyone winced at your reaction. Your memory of the fight came back to you, piece by piece.
“Your wounds were severe, Y/N. When Cho and Banner saw you… they told us it was likely you wouldn’t pull through…”
“Moving you back to the compound was a risk we had to take. Even from the ruins.”
You shook your head with a grimace as the pain slowly subsided. “Is everyone else alright?” You asked and the room of your fellow Avengers scoffed in disbelief.
“Minor scratches and bruises were the worst we got,” Steve informed you with a light chuckle, “everyone else is fine. It’s you who everyone is worried about. You took the brunt of that attack.”
“Well… I had to.” You moved again, being more cautious of your wounds. “You guys are my pack. Mine to protect.”
Your eyes met Wanda’s, a small smile on her lips as she pulled your hand to cup her face. To feel the comfort of your warmth.
You chuckled as you remembered that night she told you she was cold, only to then cuddle into your side.
How her body fit just perfectly against you when you both stood on the pier.
Your eyes lifted up to the rest of your pack.
“So get used to that because that’s a habit you’re not gonna shake from me anytime ever.”
