I need a place to vent.

Okay. So normally, i don't have subs on. Mostly because the rest of my family finds them annoying so when we watch as a family, it would be basically taboo to suggest turning them on. However, most shows don't need subs for me. Really, I only turn them on when the show is quiet, when I'm struggling to process what the actors are saying, or when there's a lot of external noise (such as a conversation in the next rom).

My problem is when they don' work like they're supposed to.

(The following examples are all situations I have encountered watching The Mentalist on the Roku Channel (specified because idk if it's different on other streaming platforms).)

The words being said don't always match the text. It's not too big of a deal for me, as I can hear what's being said, but that's not the point. Subtitles are supposed to be transcriptions of what is being said. It's annoying when the subtitles say one thing, but then the actors say it and it doesn't match.

Names appear before they've been verbally named in the show. This one bothers me because it'll either be "who's this? what did i miss?" or it'll reveal something that makes the show's reveal less impactful. I get that the sub writers are just trying to keep things compact, but honestly, is it so hard to use "man" or "woman" when the name has yet to be said?

SUBTITLE LAG. This one is just... why? You're literally failing at the one job you're been given. When i'm watching a show with subs, i want to see what's being said as it's being said. Not one or two dialogue lines later.

Interference with in-show subs. When another language is being spoken, most of the time, subtitles just say "[conversation in Spanish]" or whatever. The in-show subs are the ones actually rendering it understandable. So why do subtitle writers feel the need to write anything over in-show subs? It just blocks the words and makes you have to rewind and turn the subs off for a few seconds just to be able to read what's being said. Either repeat what the in-show subs are saying, or don't put them in at that particular point.

Whenever the subs say "[conversation in X foreign language]" or anything like that. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO TELL ME WHAT'S GOING ON. UNLESS THERE'S A REASON TO NOT TRANSLATE, YOU SHOULD TELL ME WHAT IS BEING SAID IN SPANISH.

A lot of people who claim to be Christian need to hear this: It is no longer enough to claim to be “one of the good ones”. It has never been enough. A lot of you stand by as injustices and crimes against humanity are committed and you sit there and say “Well I didn’t take part in it” and “That doesn’t have anything to do with me”. It does not matter. You are complicit. If you sit there and do/say nothing then you are apart of the problem. I don’t know if y’all know but this belief system that we have has been used and is being used to oppress and justify the killing of those who have done nothing but exist. Yes it is older than a lot of the people who first weaponized it but it is still being weaponized. This isn’t new. It is also hundreds of years old. Revolution does not simply happen by voting especially when they are explicitly trying to take away our, aka anyone who is not a straight white male, rights away. Y’all claim you want to be so much like Jesus but when it really matters you are nowhere to be seen or heard from. This is why people think a lot of y’all are a joke. You constantly show that you are not who you say you are.

I truly mourn for Katara as a character in this adaptation.

She was all pent up frustration and anger, towards her circumstances who made her a caretaker, to her brother who didn't take her bending seriously, to her bending masters who didn't want to even teach her at first.

She wasn't always this kind and gentle figure in the group. She was impulsive, followed her heart more than her head. She was prideful, hence why she lashed out at Aang for being a prodigy, picking up quickly what took her weeks to master. She had a temper, which is why she butt heads with Toph, a literal hard headed child.

She was a 14 year old girl who wanted to be more than what she was, who knew she could be more, while the rest of the world didn't think so.

So she always made a point to make herself heard and known.

If the live action just had this, I would be 100% in their corner. I would deal with the writing cus that's just how it is with adaptations. But they didn't, so now I can't really dislike it, but it's not a favorite I could defend from criticism.
