Friend of a friend connected me with an adventuring party looking for a wizard to help them raid a dungeon. They seem nice, no noobs among them and I just know I’m gonna fuck the dwarf cleric in that group later

The dungeon they’re raiding is one I built with the intention of luring in heroes and harvesting their souls for… purposes… 🤫

I’m a noob to DnD and my friends are playing a light homebrew campaign. For fun a few of us rolled for Backstory which also gave us some stats. I love my character and my rolled backstory was so wild it became part of the campaign. My characters name is Joseph McNarmal (or Average Joe as he sometimes calls himself)

The backstory for this man is he is a completely average human being. He comes from a family of sheep herders. He eventually runs afoul of some hooligans who convince him to steal some stuff for them. Joseph is a good guy and pretty agreeable so it’s not hard. As it turns out he’s very good at stealing and ends up making a career of it, even making friends with a kingpin. Until one day he screws up and starts a massive fire and leaves town.

He ends up partying a little too hard and finds himself married to an ugly woman he’s a loving husband and even has two adorable kids. His first son was born on a moonlight night, under the light of a blood moon and greeted by the howls of wolves in the distance as a storm rolls in. His second son had a birth in a remarkably opposite way and was born under the beauty of the sun and the day itself seemed supernaturally beautiful. As it turns out Joseph married the Avatar of the Goddess of the Night and giving birth to two divinely born children

He accidentally signs up to join the Army (if his backstory thus far wasn’t an indication Joseph is not a clever man) as with all other things in his life he stumbles backwards into adventure and success even managing to become a War Hero with a scar to make his painfully average face more interesting.

Eventually he leaves the army and ends up joining an adventuring Party consisting of a Rabbit Man wizard, a Hafling Barbarian woman, an Artificer and a Gnoll. (Don’t ask him how he got into this situation he couldn’t tell you)

As for the Story itself the campaign involves a shady organization of Cultists that seems to pop up everywhere the party is and Joseph starts getting a funny feeling about all the Cult stuff. Then he gets a letter from his wife telling him about meeting them on the way to the Capital. Joseph decides to hep them on the way to the city since the Party is already set up in the Capital. Only for the family to be surprised that he showed up and that they intended meet in the Capital itself. He didn’t have much time to think about it before an Army of Bandits appeared from the Woodwork. I’m saved by my Party who arrives with a large but still juvenile dragon they picked up from their last adventure and that Joseph had no knowledge of because he split from the Party.

Turns out the Bandits were here for my wife and barring that my two (now adult) sons. The rest of the party is confused until they found out that I shagged up with the Mortal Emissary of a Night Goddess and had Demigod Children to which the first response from anyone was “THIS GUY?! Followed by variations of “how did Joseph of all people manage that?!”

Joseph has no clue how, he couldn’t tell you how he managed to do most of the things he’s done in his life. By all accounts he’s the Hawkeye to their Avengers.

For something more fluffy and funny

Imagine the AUs playing fucking DnD with Husk as the DM (because he was around the time DND got invented and I can see Husk being a good DM).

There is also a rule that there can only be ONE (maybe two depending on how big the party size is ) bard because Husk knows if that rule doesnt exist he's gonna have so many vicious mockery rolls its gonna give him a headache.

As for classes, now this is just me assigning peeps classes based on vibes and if they would play or not. If people have their own suggestions, please do share owo. (also please note I am baby DND noob, so most of info is coming from Baldur's Gate 3's wiki)

Canon Alastor-Bard, that is if anyone can get him to play and make him promise not to do something insane like teleport them into the world of DnD. (College of Lore branch). Sidenote: he only got bard because of that one animation where Alastor cats vicious mockery just insult Lucifer's height wheeeze. also because if you told al could hurt people with magical insults, he would go for it let's be honest.

Canon Vox-Artificer, since it seems up his ally but again this is a case of, can you get him to play it, probably more willing than canon Al, but would also rage quit if he fails dice rolls. (Artillerist branch)

Swap Alastor-He gives Cleric vibes. Probably more willing, but you would have to walk him through stuff. Probably ends up the team mom against his will. (Life Domain branch)

Swap Vox-Torn between Fighter or Paladin, leaning more towards Fighter. Probably not so willing, but would if his Alastor was. Would probably leave others for dead. (Champion Branch for Fighter, maybe Oath of Devotion branch for Paladin).

Secretly Married Alastor-Rogue, like Canon, would need to be talked into it, but may lean towards more willing just to humor it. Takes a lot of the notes and rolling the highest perception checks (Arcane trickster branch)

Secretly Married Vox-Sorcerer, like his partner, doing it to humor it (and also because sorcerer class sounded cool to him). Is hyping up his Al and somehow skating by on his rolls (example if the roll success require is like 15, he barley just makes it with the help of his modifiers). Also storm sorcery branch

Dadstatiocradio Alastor-Bard, because he does not trust his canon part to not pick fights with vicious mockery. May know more about the game thanks to his Charlie or not, who knows, but is the most willing to join in I say. (College of Valour branch).

Dadstaticradio Vox-Okay this one is hard, but like, he gives Enchantment branch wizard vibes tbh. Maybe just me tho. Also the most willing. Would threaten to cast fireball to make everyone shut up.

Radio Guard Alastor-Torn between Bloodhunter and warlock (Fiend branch because haha get it his deal with Lucifer). Probably legit only joined because Husk needed another sane player and or he was bored and was just "Fuck it". Is the one who takes it a bit more seriously and trying to gather the most information.

Radio Guard Vox-Ranger, because he thought it would be fun. Like Dadstaticradios, he is the most willing to join. Prides himself on headshots when he can get them in campaigns. ( Hunter branch maybe).

Blueberry-Warlock, really only joins after some convincing (and the promise of canon Alastor will be nice to him). The running joke and just confirmed campaign canon is Husk is Blueberry's patron who helps guide him around. (Husk Patron branch /j, Archfey tech).

Highschool Al and Vox are Dms with Husk since idk what they would be tbh.

Silly fact no. 1 - They are a convergent evolutionary state of the common noob called a Noobling. They’re kinda insectoid, and also technically aliens. These guys are all mostly gone as they were wiped out during an invasion they weren’t prepared for. Silly is one of the last of their kind ::(

Silly fact no. 5 - Silly has the classic party cannon gear item stored in their staff room. If they were in game, you’d be able to go to the staff room by hopping over the prize counter and look around in the back where you could purchase a yellow ball. The cannon would not be interactive but if you hovered over it you’d get a flavor text saying “Weapon of Mass Destruction”

fantasy high - the original, the og. teens in fantasy high school, having hijinks and saving the world. honestly, if there's like an established place to start, this is it. there's a second season, and a couple of live shows that are so fucking fun. griffin mcelroy's live ep is fucking WILD, i love ficus

pirates of leviathan - fantasy high adjacent, post fh season 2. i didn't actually finish this one. i dont remember why. i dont super have a strong attachment to fh season 2, so the setting for this one just didn't interest me, but it's pirates having hijinks on a floating pirate city

unsleeping city 1 & 2 - urban fantasy weirdness, urban fantasy fun times. the magical world that lives beneath and alongside the new york we all know. like fables, maybe, but more fantasy archetypes than folklore. really fun, really enjoyable, i have no memory of season two but i know i watched it

the seven - another fh spinoff, but a little more tied into the first season. a fantasy party of all the people they spent season one trying to save. it is SO FUCKING FUNNY, and SO FUCKING GAMEPLAY CRUNCHY, and I CRIED SO FUCKING HARD. need some emotional healing? exquisite. i miiiight suggest watching fh first, just to understand who they are, but also you don't *need* to

tiny heist - borrowers and fairies and thug bugs and living toys, trying to run a heist. so goddamn fun. highly, highly recommend. i love a fuckin heist. its the mcelroy family season, so if you like them you can look forward to that. just mcelroy is just. he's fucking batshit.

a crown of candy - game of thrones ass campaign, but the characters and kingdoms are all based on the different food groups. for real and honest, this season didn't hit me and i didn't finish it. but i do enjoy compilations of it on youtube

the ravening war - crown of candy spin off. i also didn't watch this at all, but it has cr's matt mercer as the guest gm, and im sure he's a great guy and all, but i just don't vibe with his dm style. deffo the least amount of levity of all the seasons, i think

mice & murder - a sherlock holmes, agatha christie ass murder mystery where everyone is in the house trying to solve the murder. also everyone is woodland creatures. another highly recommend if you're into murder mysteries like that

escape from the bloodkeep - what if lotr was told from the baddies pov. it's so stupid, so silly, so much fun. highly recommend

shriek week - monsters on their final week of college. despite my love of guest gm, gabe hicks, this season just Did Not Hit Me. not even ify nwadiwe could hold me

misfits and magic - hogwarts ass magic school for little wizards, but without the transphobia and racism. need some kids upsetting an unjust society based on classism? this for you. so, so good! guest gm aabria iyengar, she fucking knocks it out of the park. there's also a christmas episodes and a live show with a different cast

a starstruck odyssey - did you know that brennan lee mulligans mom elaine wrote the comic starstruck? this season is based on the comic and its very fucking fun! scifi shenanigans out the ass

neverafter - horror themed season, about macabre fairytale characters and the enduring nature of stories. it took me a bit to get into this season, but it's so good! you gotta like horror, tho. that's important to remember. it's a dark season

coffin run - draculas followers try to get an injured dracula back to the castle before his enemies catch up. sooooooo so so fucking funny, one of my favorite seasons. guest gm jasmine bhullar kills it. absolutely unfuckinghinged season

a court of fey and flowers - EASILY my favorite, second favorite season. aabria is back, the fey are having a party, someone is trying to do something terrible, they need to navigate jane austen era ass court politics to figure it out. so, so fucking stupid and fun

dungeons & drag queens - i havent finished this season, cuz i got Depressed As Shit earlier this year and just couldn't, but im about to jump back in. honestly, the plot doesn't matter, it's monet x change, alaska thunderfuck, jujubee and bob the drag queen. do you need to know anything else? no, you don't

mentopolis - the current season. a good place to start it you don't want to binge anything, as only one episode is out. it's a noir detective mystery taking place within the brain of a scientist and is already climbing the ranks of my favorite seasons

... How to feel about SotO.

On one hand I was already kind of disappointed how abrupt the changes were after EoD. Like, we made friends, even "dated" our favorite fan ( or any of the other options available) and it seemed we made good friends in a more "stable" environment than HoT or PoF.

Then suddenly nobody has any time for us, we are back in old core Tyria ( for what reason btw? We don't even have a job outside of being the commander so we could easily live in Cantha.), alone. I know that we had some hint coming from Rama's party where we saw him alone too, but the difference was that Rama wasn't that appreciated in his own circle and was rather new to our. So... I'll maybe sound mean but it made more sense in his case.

But for our character? We litteraly saved Tyria for like 10 years, even died and come back just for it. I understand that an aetherblade or a svanir won't like us, but our own guildmates?

And then one of the most recent of them, Ivan, send us on a weird paranormal investigation leading us to another unknown world ( I still need to explore my GW lore to find more connections) where Zojja is now ( how didn't we tried to visit her before?) . And there's WIZARDS. Like... We never heard about wizards in Tyria except for the Wizard's Folly back in GW Eden and for Isgarren. And it sounded more like an old title rather than anything real, like some elementalist vocabulary.

Lore speaking I can't say if I'm really fond of it, it seems that they didn't have any idea, checked at the fan theories, picked one and build something around it. Not that I'm saying I don't like the idea of them checking at our ramblings but it seems missing some pieces.

And game speaking... Look, I'm a true casual, even less than a casual, more like a noob who look like a casual but still remain a noob. And I found it EASY. Which isn't good. I struggled with core, with HoT, with PoF and with EoD. SotO is the first one without any struggle other than my computer which is getting old and has some troubles.

I completed the exploration of the 3 maps in less than 6 hours of very unconsistent play, watching/listening vlogs, snacking and chatting about OCs with friends at the same time. Usually it takes me few weeks to do that. Skyscales are a huge help but let's be honest few minutes, I already had mine for EoD so... Yeah, the maps are easy as f***.

And that's my main problems with that first step outside of the dragons cycle, I don't think I'm getting better or that I'm tired of Tyria, I just feel like they are uninspired and don't try to make a content with the same quality and challenge as previous, which is sad considering how much existing unreleased lands are already existing ( Dzalana & cie). Also, why making us bond with NPCs if it's for not having them near us now? That sounds a bit pointless for me.

Legit! For both 3.5E and 4E reading the books is like,, a must! So we were both pretty used to it, I used to play VtM too and gods know we had multiple copies of the books so every one could easily reference them. I would say just in general reading the books is important, ya know? Know the rules to break them.

And that was the problem. That DM started the campaign without ever reading the books to begin with, so those 2hrs were spent finding the reference for a spell or something (of which I have the habit of scribbling down on a document for easy reference) but those 2hrs were spent teaching the DM the game. Basically me and the other player would often end up halting the game because we had to explain what the 'frightened' condition was to our DM, and things like that. One will not mention the amount of times he switched between rules and didn't stick to his own frame of reference. (e.g.: taking our bonus actions whenever he felt like it)

It also didn't help that we were playing Cleric and Bard. We wanted to get back to D&D by playing classes we had never touched on, and uh... our favourite classes are Warlock and Wizard, respectively, so we were definitely not the ideal first party for a noob DM, I suppose. The other two players were Fighters so there really was no arguments with them, they just smashed shit and had two actions.

You can really tell that I struggle not to overload everything with details on the fighter, and then just gave up on the wizard to save time (mostly because there will be a dwarf in front of her lol). The worst thing is that I have only the barest description by the players, so I really don’t know whether they’ll even like it. (I was always picturing the wizard in furs and furs and furs, but a dress is just so much quicker to draw lol).

Kid Icarus (NES)

Kid Icarus, released by Nintendo for the NES in 1987, has always been a curiosity for me. I was only made aware of the character via the show Captain N: The Game Master...

By the way, one of the things that always irritated me about that intro is how Kevin is supposed to be "The GAME Master", yet when we see him play Punch-Out!!!, motherfucker's over there just button mashing King Hippo and running out his stamina like a noob. Looks like Captain N needs to get himself a Nintendo Power subscription.

Anyway, except for that show, I had never heard of nor played Kid Icarus, but it made me curious about it, as it must be a good game for him to be drafted into a team among the likes of Simon Belmont and Mega Man, instead of say Samus Aran, Link, or Mario. I could never get my hands on the game, though, and none of my friends had it. Hell, I didn't even realize his name is Pit until he became a Smash Bros character.

Sooooo skip ahead to now, when I finally got to play it, and... it's fine.

The game begins with Pit escaping from the Underworld after being gifted a magical bow and arrow from the goddess Palutena. He must traverse Angel Land to reach the evil Medusa in order to stop her siege on the Sky Palace and rescue Palutena. You wouldn't know any of this from playing the game though - you'd need the manual (or in my case, Wikipedia).

The game is an action platformer, similar in some respects to Metroid, although much more linear. You can upgrade your health and weapons the further you make it through the game, either by enduring training exercises, buying power-ups, or simply successfully making it through a stage. The game is spit into four worlds, and each world is split into four stages (except for the final world, which is just one stage). The first three stages of each world is pretty straightforward, but each world ends with a castle stage that can be annoyingly labyrinthine if you don't have a map.

The graphics of the game definitely seem crude, like one would expect from an NES launch title (which this was). There are times the gameplay can evil feel a little buggy, which is surprising consider the quality control Nintendo usually has for its first party titles. The game can be difficult as hell, as dying only once can set you all the way back to the beginning. This game doesn't cut you slack either - your health carries over level to level, so if you barely survived a boss battle, you better tread lightly in the next stage until you can find a healing spring. Thankfully there's a password system to somewhat mitigate the frustration factor.

The music is bouncy and catchy without becoming mindnumbing, which is helped by the factor that each stage has very distinct music. However, the music also doesn't really fully utilize the NES soundchip either. In fact, my biggest critique of this game as a whole is, while the concept was ambitious for the time, it doesn't fully utilize the technical capabilities of the system to pull it off. However, I will say this - the Eggplant Wizard is a funny villian design. I'm something of an "Eggplant Wizard" myself if you know what I mean ;)

Concept for a comedy-fantasy movie:

A movie about a session of Dungeons and Dragons that switches off between the players’ imagination and real life. Sort of like how “The Princess Bride” was both the fairy tale and the grandfather telling the story in the real world. Also, sorta like “Jumanji 2” where it’s people talking through their game avatars.

Anthony Mackie plays the DM and, in-game, the wizard that guides the party.

Zendaya plays the lead player and her character, a ranger, is played by Winston Duke.

Tom Holland plays the overexcited nerd of the group and his character, a wizard, is played by Natalie Portman.

Jacob Tremblay plays the kid of the group who is actually the best player and his character, a warlock, is played by David Harbour.

Josh Brolin plays the old guy of the group who was invited to play by his friend, Anthony Mackie, and his character, a bard, is played by Jack Black.

Rashida Jones plays an in-game noble.

Kit Harrington cameos as a ranger that is so obviously a parody of Jon Snow.

Andy Serkis plays the main villain, the mindflayer.
