WordPress widgets
I have been wondering if something happened on WordPress.com’s end because I noticed a lot of things failing to function correctly. I don’t know what happened, but something changed along the line, and I want to know if this is me thing. So I saw that WordPress has put some widgets in the legacy widgets in this category and these don’t show up anymore unless you have the code to re-add them to…

I have to be honest, I'm not having a good feeling about Tumblr 😢 (x, x, x, and x if you haven't heard). I love having a blog so much, so I'll be here going down with this ship 😅 But do we make some contingency plans? Should I set up a discord? Is blogger still a thing? (And still free?) I'm more so wanting to have a sense of what I might do in the event we wake up one morning and Tumblr is just…gone/broken lol. Please let me know your thoughts/ideas!!

Ever wondered why you were born at this particular time in the history of human existence? Why not a decade, not a century or not even a millennium ago?
Why, among the countless stellar phenomena and quantum fluctuations were you placed in this precise moment with the specific people and circumstances you're surrounded by?
It was all strategic not by happenstance, but calculated with the precision of neutronis interactions. There's a reason you're on this earth and a purpose behind every person's existence in this specific cosmic time. When one discovers the purpose of their being, they will live with much peace and happiness.

@staff are going to port Tumblr to a WordPress backend.
I know they've slowly been implementing the Block Editor in Tumblr, but I'm really curious how they plan to implement reblogs in WordPress.

in a move worthy or Elon Musk or Donald Trump, tumblr ceo @photomatt is threatening to shut down the site for the outrage over tumblr moderation failing to protect and even targeting trans people. Oh no the people who work here are experiencing the same behaviour that trans people on this site have had to suffer, sometimes at the staff's own hands. Better burn everything to the ground.

Matty boy, if your AI is gonna keep flagging GOLDEN GIRLS posts as "too mature" while there's still transphobes and nazis on this site...Oh and while you keep getting advertisement money from the Trump grifters, well. I think we're going to have a problem.

I bet the reason the nested replies UI is so ugly is they're saving space to add reactions too. That's my conspiracy theory for today. 🧐 I'm onto u tumblr... I see the future......
WAIT actually no what if they added up/downvotes for replies instead. Introducing a ratio effect to a previously ratio-free site. The replies are traditionally the underfunded petting zoo of tumblr after all. Lotta laugh potential there.
Any of these options will still be very ugly though lol
Ha, we'll have to wait and see, but now you have receipts for the future if you're proven right!!
Of those two options, I think reactions are slightly more likely because upvotes/downvotes seem kind of antithetical to how engagement works on this site? But who knows, tumblr does what tumblr does lol
Honestly, though, I'd wager the devs just aren't particularly good at UI work and/or simply don't have the *time* to do UI work (since staff is so tiny these days). The spacing on the new reply panel looks to me like they plopped in the reply button icon, and then maybe spent a total of 5 seconds trying to adjust the padding in the CSS code before giving up lmao. Given this site's propensity for spaghetti code, it's also possible they *tried* to fix it, and had a contradictory style somewhere they couldn't find slfjddsl.
Basically, the layout has a lot of spacing that looks more to me like unnecessary padding rather than space for additional elements. Personally, though, I think tumblr should add exactly one (1) react button, and it should just be the tumbeasts from days of old

Damage control has started, huh?
On my recent post linking to an article describing how Tumblr has already scraped user data, and are relying solely on faith that OpenAI and Midjourney will retroactively adhere to users' opt-out requests (if they haven't been used in training already) one of the staff accounts responded with this:
Tumblr media
Surely, this post has some clarifications, right? Here's a link so you can read along.
Tumblr: "AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms."
Yes, and you're taking advantage of this for monetary gain. The article revealed you have already been scraping data, including data that should not have been scraped.
Tumblr: "Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used."
Gee, that's great. Except now we know you've already been scraping! One of your employees has already moved his photography completely off-site! And you're relying on blind faith that those you are selling this data to will comply with user opt-out requests retroactively, and that's if the scraped data hasn't already been used to train before the user opts-out!
Tumblr: "We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions."
Except we already know that you're essentially just hoping they comply. What they do with data you've already submitted and have been paid for seems like it would be out of your hands, especially if that data has already been used to train. Blind faith isn't "making sure" - the only way you could "make sure" is by making this system opt-in instead of opt-out... except you wouldn't be able to exploit us for the cash we know you need in that case.

@staff I'm setting up a professional blog on WordPress for my business, and I was testing how to share my posts in other websites and social media. I set up all the options, reposted an article from my Facebook page, and checked.
Facebook page: success
Mastodon: success
Instagram: success
LinkedIn: success
Tumblr: nothing happened
How does Automattic expect Tumblr to ever be profitable when basic integration functions don't even work between their two flagship products? Not to mention, the post editor on WordPress, although fairly annoying, has many more features, less limitations and includes SEO tools and AI marketing assistance and integrated stores and a ton of plugins. No wonder Tumblr keeps losing money, it's a blogging platform where blogging is extremely inconvenient compared to their former main competitor/current sister website. Honestly it didn't even cross my mind to make the Tumblr account the main one, I just naturally assumed "well this is professional so I should use wordpress", and I've been in this place for nearly a decade. And if Automattic itself doesn't respect their own product enough to fix basic functionality issues like that when they did put in the work to make it work with Mastodon, a website that came out last Tuesday, then how do they expect anyone else to take it seriously as a business?
You wanna make money with Tumblr? Give it WooCommerce integration, payment plugins and premium creator tools, just like you did in your other website that allegedly does the same thing as this one. Etsy is in decline, Patreon is under fire, and you could easily take in the refugees from both those communities if you just treated this website like a business. It's insane that I can't activate tips on my Tumblr because I don't live in one of seven privileged countries while on WordPress I can just put a PayPal button on the top of my blog like a guitar case on the sidewalk. It honestly makes me mad that this place has been known for a decade to be full of artists and craftspeople and opinionated cult leaders but never even considered to give them the chance to open a merch store. Do you realise how many websites are making dough on commissions for things people could easily sell here? People who by the way have to constantly figure out new and inventive ways to circumvent Tumblr's ass policies of not letting users make any money from their platform directly in any way. And instead you bought a streaming function from some Canadian grifters. This place is broke because it wants to be.

I’m so tempted to turn one of my url-hoarding sideblogs into a studyblr (specifically for tracking my language learning and holding myself accountable) but wow this might be the worst time to start a new tumblr blog lol
#i mean this site is like some kind of cockroach that just keeps going and going and going as better-run and funded sites collapse#so i figure even if the ‘25ish staff left’ rumour is true; we probably have at least a year left#or maybe they’ll migrate everything to wordpress. that’d be nice#also i’d be surprised if we didn’t at least get a warning so people can export stuff#i’m gonna be so real with you i really don’t care to back up this blog#yeah i’ve had it for like 8 years or something but it’s not like i’ve been posting important content here or anything#it really is just shitposting and my diary#everything of any value is stuff i’ve reblogged. like reference posts and such. which i forget to refer to anyway#(i mean i go through my recipes tag and ‘to read’ every so often but that’s about it honestly)#i could back up 8 years of blogging and never refer to it again#would i miss this blog and this site? absolutely. do i miss it enough to make a backup? i genuinely don’t know#i care about my taylor swift sideblog even less. like much less#the studyblr would be about the same.. like i’d just be using it to hold myself accountable and record what language lessons and activities#i did in a day. i wouldn’t feel a need to refer to it again#i am truly the type of person who dumps shit out of my brain and never goes back to it#i respect the hell out of people who post actual important shit onto their blogs and i 100% think they should back that up#that’s not me though#personal
